It was him. It had always been him. But I couldn't get myself to forgive him, I just couldn't.
So, instead of smiling or waving it anything, I just sat there, frozen in place, as his eyes landed on mine. For the entire evening I had prevented him from looking at me. Newt Scamander. The one and only Magizoologist and my former best friend. We went to Hogwarts together, but as always, my sister Leta caught his attention and the two of us talked less and less, until  we didn't talk at all anymore. In the end, I befriended his brother Theseus and the two uf us started working at the ministry together. I could never forgive Newt for favoring my sister over me, I knew it was childish, but still...
He smiled at me shyly, which pulled my out of my trance, so I quickly looked away. Leta seemed to notice my Nervousness, so she grabbed my hand and smiled at me. It was a sad smile and immediately I knew what she was about to do.
"Leta", I whispered, "Don't!"
I closed my fingers around her hand trying to stop her from leaving me, but it was useless. She broke free and tumbled down the stairs.
"Leta!!", I yelled again, as she got dangerously close the the blue flames. I quickly grabbed my wand, trying to cast a spell to stop her, but Leta was faster. She turned around, an apologetic look on her face. She raised her wand against me:"Expelliarmus!!"
I was thrown to the ground, to far away to still help her. I looked back up and saw Leta standing in front of Grindelwald.
"Leta!?"
It was Theseus. Her fiancé and my best friend. His eyes looked glossy and he seemed so confused, not understanding what was going on. But Leta ignored him, she turned around and looked me in the eyes, a smile on her face, before she stepped into the flames.
And just like that, she was gone. My sister was gone.
"Leta?", I mumbled, not understanding what just happened. It couldn't be true, it couldn't. How could she be dead?!
"Xenia!?" I heard my name. I looked up, tears in my eyes. It was Newt. He kneeled down in front of me, an expression of pain on his face.
"We need to go", He whispered and put a Hand in my shoulder. I was too stunned to speak, so I only nodded. He gently pulled me onto my feet and guided me away from the flames.
In that moment, I didn't care. I didn't care about our fight, about our past, about nothing, I just followed Newt away from the flames.
But they grew hotter each second we tried to escape them. It seemed useless.
"Hurry!!",My face shot up. It was Flamel, he had found us. And he had a solution, so we ran, we ran and ran until we so rounded the flames.
Newt stopped right next to me and Theseus. I looked at the two brothers and nodded. Together, we rammed out wands into the ground, yelling:"Finite!!"
Red flames broke lose, circling the blue one's by Grindelwald. The heat was getting unbearable, but I threw up my arms and stayed in position. After a few minutes, I felt the heat dying down and looked back up. The graveyard was burnt to pieces, but everyone seemed alive and well.
Just now, I finally seemed to realize what had actually happend. I slowly fell to my knees, tears falling down my face. My sister was dead. Leta Lestrange was dead. I sniffled slightly and looked up at Theseus. He also had tears in his eyes. Of course, he just witnessed the love of his life die.
"Theseus?", I mumbled and grabbed his hand. His eyes fell on mine and then he lost it. He started sobbing and cried out in pain. I quickly pulled him in for a hug, letting my own tears fall freely.
Newt was still standng next to us and despite everything, I raisedmy hand and motioned for him to come to us. He had lost someone too. Newt slowly trotted over to us, his shaking hand took mine and I pulled him closer to Theseus and me. The two brothers looked at each other before nodding.
"We need to go", Theseus mumbled. Newt and I only nodded and grabbed his hand and Theseus apparated us to the french Ministry of magic . I sniffled quietly and wiped away my tears.
"I'm sorry", Newt whispered. I looked up at him, a little perplexed. "for everything", he mumbled. I carefully took his hand. Newt avoided looking at me, so I simply pulled him with me to sit down on a nearby bench, waiting for Theseus. I quietly put my head down on his shoulder. A few seconds of silence passed, each one of us lost in their thoughts.
"I know", I finally said and glanced at Newt. "I know", I repeated and squeezed his hand,"I forgive you"
Tumblr media
"Oh come on", I cursed. Theseus and I were dangling from the ceiling in one of the best secured prisons of the the magical community.
"He'll come", Theseus assured, trying to turn towards me, but he just swung around helplessly.
"What makes you so sure?!", I asked, trying to think fo what Newt was currently doing. I was hoping, that he was save.
After my sister died, I barely had time to grieve. The situation with Grindelwald got much worse and we had to fight Him. Even Dumbledore decided to step into action now, even if he and Grindelwald still had the blood swear.
"Theseus?"
My head shot up. I turned to look at Theseus. He nodded, so he had heard it too.
"Xenia?"
No doubt that it was Newt. A grin rose onto my face. Theseus was right, he actually came to save us.
I was about to yell his name, but Theseus repeatedly shook his head, motioning for me to stop. And fortunately, I listened to him.
A few seconds later, we saw Newt trotting over to us. But he was walking like a crab with his arms in the air and legs spread.
"Rescuing us, are you?", Theseus mumbled.
Newt quietly answered:"That's the general idea"
"And I presume... This", Theseus said, looking at Newt confused,"Whatever it is, you are doing, is strategic"
Newt nodded:"Yes, it's a technique called limbic mimicry. It discourages violent engagement...theoretically. I've only actually attempted it once before"
"And the results?", I asked, looking at him.
"Uh...", Newt mumbled, arriving right in front of Theseus. "Inconclusive", He muttered, "Course that was a laboratory setting and the conditions were strictly controlled and the...Well, the current conditions are more volatile, so making it less predictive of the ultimate outcome."
Newt had waddled closer to us and slowly attempted to turn around, so that he was facing Theseus and me.
"The ultimate outcome presumably... Bing our survival", Theseus said and looked up and Newt, who was standing directly in front of him now.
Suddenly a tail emerged right behind Newt. It came out of the abyss that was hovering only a few feet under us.
The tail got closer to Newt. To close for my liking, but it only seemed to inspect him. Newt carefully craned away his head, trying to avoid touching it.
A few meters away from us, the light of one of the other inmates, suddenly started flickering before it ran out.
The tail, which was next to Newt quickly got away from him and started hissing at the inmate, before it sunk back into the abyss.
A few seconds later, a much bigger scorpion-looking tail emerged and grabbed the inmate, pulling him down with it, while all he could do was scream.
"Holy lord", I gulped.
Newt had slowly turned around and watched how the remains of the inmate were shot back up. All that was remaining was a stinky corpse, dipped in Secretions and juices from the scorpion.
Suddenly, all the tiny scorpions started marching away quickly. Newt could only look after them, as they started eating up the remains of the inmate.
Newt quickly jumped closer to Theseus, cutting open his fetters. I could hear a thud, presumably Theseus who fell to the ground.
He groaned, as Newt grabbed his lantern and stepped over to me.
"Hy", He mumbled as he also loosened my fetters. I also fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
"Hy", I groaned, as Newt grabbed my hand and  pulled me to my feet.
"Are you alright?", he asked. I only nodded, rubbing my back.
Newt ran back out and Theseus and I followed him quickly.
"Shit", I mumbled, as I saw the army on little scorpions in front of us. They were blocking the way out.
"And the plan is?", Theseus asked, while I felt how Newt slowly pushed me behind him.
"Hold this", Newt said and handed me his latern. I quickly grabbed it and held it up. Newt folded his hands and started whistling. The sound echoed through the caves, as Theseus and I waited for something to happen.
"What the bloody hell was that for?", Theseus whispered, looking at Newt from the corner of his eye.
"Um..", Newt breathed, "We're gonna need some help."
He suddenly lifted his arms, getting into the scorpion-like position, he was in earlier. Theseus and I backed away a little bit, as the tiny scorpions all mimicked Newt's pose.
Theseus and I quickly tried to copy Newt's pose. The lantern dangled around in my hand, as I did my best to do it exactly like him. He suddenly started swinging his hips:"Follow me"
I gulped and started at him, as I slowly trailed behind Newt, trying to copy his actions. I looked behind me, seeing that Theseus was also struggling to find the right rhythm.
"Come on", Newt mumbled quietly. The three of us, were slowly walking along the path together with the tiny scorpions who all copied our actions. We looked like a weird magicall dance group, practicing for their next gig.
"You're not swiveling properly", Newt said, eyeing Theseus' hip swings.
"Swivel...", he tried to explain, "Swivel, but delicately"
"I'm swiveling like you're swiveling, Newt", Theseus said sternly, even though it was obvious that he struggled.
"I don't believe you are", Newt mumbled, tilting his head.
"Shut up, you two", I mumbled and gave them both and stern look.
Suddenly the lantern in my hand started flickering too. Newt and Theseus immediately stopped fighting and looked at the light in my hand.
But luckily, it didn't go out. Unfortunately the light in the chamber right behind me started flickering too now, before it ultimately stopped glowing.
"Bloddy hell", I whispered before ducking away quickly, as the Gigantic scorpion tail emarged from the abyss and grabbed the inmate behind me.
I quickly got up and waddled over to Newt, as I saw the Corpse already flying back up. I stumbled into Newt's side and he quickly put his arm around me, preventing me from falling.
"Are you alright?", Newt mumbled and looked down at me.
"Mmh", I nodded, as I glanced at the tiny scorpions eating up the corpse.
Newt and I looked at Theseus and he nodded:"Swivel"
I parted from Newt and the three of us started trotting away again.
After a few minutes, we finally reached the entrance of our cave.
We were ready to step out, when I heard a crunching sound behind me.
Newt and I turned around and saw that Theseus had stepped on one of the tiny scorpions. He slightly shook his foot, to get it away from his shoe. 'Gross', I thought to myself.
Suddenly the lantern in my hand started flickering again, but this time, it finally stopped glowing.
I looked around as all the scorpions hurried out of the cave, leaving the three of us behind.
I couldn't believe my eyes, as I turned around and saw at least four of the giant scorpion tails, coming out of the abyss. The creature growled at us, before it started to attack.
A yell escaped my lips, as Newt, Theseus and I started running away.
"Woah", I yelped, as the cave crashed right in front of me, a Scorpion tail destroying the wall. I quickly got up and backed away. I ran into the other direction and duck away from the glowing splotches of Secretion, that the scorpion fired at me.
I had to stop, trying to catch my breath as the tiny scorpions suddenly so rounded me again. I quickly backed away, back into the cave, but right now, the Gigantic creature was emerging completely. It seemed like I had no way out. It hissed at me, and rammed it's tail into the wall right next to me. I whimpered slightly and backed away. I ran across the path towards the entrance. It seemed like a parkour, since every few seconds one of the tails rammed into the earth right next to me. I finally made my way out and started running like the devil was chasing me.
As I crossed an intersection, I was able to spot Newt for a second, who was also running away. I turned left and saw him running towards me. I sprinted the last few meters towards him and he grabbed my hand, pulling me with him, as Theseus also joined the two of us. Together, we sprinted towards the entrance, as the ceiling started to crumble. Right after we escaped, it crashed down and closed the entrance once and for all.
I tried to catch my breath, as I thought we were save, but suddenly a tail came up behind us. It slung around Theseus and pulled him away.
"No wait!!", Newt yelled and the two of us grabbed one of Theseus' hands each and tried pulling him back to us. It seemed almost impossible, as Newt lost Theseus' hand.
He was pulled closer to the abyss and so was I. I landed flat on my stomach, as I tried to prevent Theseus from being pulled into the abyss.
"Newt!", he yelled, as I struggled to hold him up. He grabbed both of my hands tightly and tried to pull himself up.
Newt ran to us, grabbing my other hand, building up a chain. Suddenly Pickett came flying towards us, Newt's Wand in his hand. He quickly grabbed it and yelled:"Accio!!"
Only seconds later the three of us fell into the abyss, as Teddy, Newt's Niffler,  came flying right after us.
"Grab the tie!!", Newt yelled. I did as he told and the port key activated. The three of us were apparated out of the prison.
We landed somewhere in a Forrest. The cold air hit my face, as we landed on the ground. Thanks to Theseus and Newt, I landed gently, as I toppled down on the both of them.
I groaned slightly and got up, as I noticed that the scorpion tail was still around Theseus, as him and Newt got up too. He quickly pushed it away, the tie though was still in his hand. It hissed and crawled away quickly.
Thesus lifted the Tie and handed it over to Newt, since Teddy was still clinging to it.
"That was a portkey", he said sternly.
"Yeah", Theseus mumbled.
"Well done you Two", Newt said as we reached the lake right in front of us. I couldn't believe my eyes at what I saw. A smile appeared on my face, as I took in the sight of Hogwarts, right in front of us.
"Come on", I smiled and pulled the two wizards with me.
As we entered the great hall, I immediately spotted Lally sitting next to a couple students.
"Lally!", I shouted and she looked over to us.
"What kept you three?", she asked and got up.
"Uh", I mumbled, "We encountered some complications. You?"
"We encountered some complications", she repeated and handed me the Newspaper that she was holding.
I opened it and looked at the headline perplexed.
"Jacob tried to murder Grindelwald?", Theseus asked, after he peered over my shoulder.
"It's a long story", Lally said.
She turned around and I spotted Jacob sitting at the Dinner table with some Students, they were talking about his new wand.
"Jacob", Lally said sternly, catching his attention, "Look who I found"
"Hey", he smiled and quickly got up,"Its my wizard friends, Newt, Theseus and Xenia"
He looked back at the students and crossed his fingers:"We're like this. I gotta go, alright. Have fun. Don't do anything I wouldn't do"
I smiled at our muggle friend. He never failed to impress me with his charisma.
"Do you believe this place?", he asked, as he stepped over to us, "They got pint-sized little witches and wizards running around here"
"You don't say", I chuckled. I saw Theseus smile slightly before he slowly walked away from us.
"I was the assassin", Jacob mumbled, leaning closer to me and Newt. A smiled at him, giving Newt a look and a chuckle left his lips.
"Newt, Theseus and Xenia all went to Hogwarts", Lally explained with a smile before we followed Theseus.
"Oh, I knew that. Well, they're being very nice to me. The Slytherin boys over there, they gave me these", Jacob smiled and held up a package of candy,"They're delicious. Who wants one?"
Newt and I turned around and Eyed the box that he was holding.
"Well, I never cared for cockroach clusters much myself, although Honeydukes are supposed to be the best", I explained
The bell chimed and the students all got up and Started to leave, while the four of us stepped over to Dumbledore. He did not seem happy.
Tumblr media
After explaining the situation to us, Dumbledore lead us to his brother, who lived in Hogsmead.
"Here we are", Dumbledore said and opened the door for us.
"Bunty, you're here", Newt said and looked over to his assistant.
"Yes", she smiled.
Newt finally noticed the Quilin standing to his feet.
"How is she?", he asked and leaned down.
"Oh, she's fine", Bunty said. She grabbed Newt's case and let out the other Nifflers.
"What's Alfie done now?", Newt asked as he crawled into his hand, scolding the little guy.
"Miss Broadacher, I trust my brother has been a gracious host?", Dumbledore asked and caught my attention. He eyed Bunty questioningly.
"Yes, ever so gracious", she smiled.
"I'm delighted to hear", Dumbledore said and turned to his brother,"Uh,so room's have been arranged for you in the village and Aberforth here will prepare you a delicious dinner, his own recipe"
To be honest, the soup Aberforth made, didn't look to delicious. The taste was astonishing though.
I looked over to Newt, as I caught him staring.
"Newt?", I mumbled and nudged his arm, "Can we talk for a second?"
He only nodded and followed me outside as I excused the two of us.
We stepped outside into the cold and I quickly turned around, looking at Newt. He was avoiding my eyes.
"Newt... I...", I whispered and grabbed his arm. I gently pulled him closer to me and he let me. "Newt, I...I want to thank you. Ehm, for saving my life.", I mumbled. I felt his breath hit my face and I looked up at him. His face was inches away from mine and he finally looked into my eyes.
"Xenia", he whispered. I couldn't help myself. I pulled him closer by his arm and our lips collided in a soft kiss. I closed my eyes, as I felt his arms wrap around me gently, like he was afraid to hurt me. I put my arms around his neck, as I deepened the kiss.
"I love you", I blurted out as we parted,"I always have" Newt didn't say anything and for a second, I thought that I had spoken to soon. I looked down in embarressment, but suddenly I felt how Newt's hand rose to carress my face. He leaned down and softly kissed me again.
"I love you too", he smiled,"I always have"

Theseus Scamander x reader
✨Love is magical✨
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10| Part 11|
Without missing a beat, Theseus broke away from Leta’s hug to chase after you immediately and Newt followed suit. “Im really sorry Leta, I’ll explain later” said Newt. “Y/n”!!! “Y/n!!!” “Y/n”!!! Theseus yelled your name so many times while running after you that people began to stare at him. You didn’t notice as your mind was spiraling. Sitting there in the alley way you gradually began to come to. You could hear Theseus and Newt turning the same corner. You got up quickly and apparated back to your home. You could’ve stayed…you could’ve told Theseus how you were feeling…but your heart just couldn’t….it was shattered. You made up your mind, Theseus should be with his fiancé, it would make everything easier than having to hear what he wanted. In reality though, you were just tremendously scared…scared that Theseus would have made the same decision you made. You sat on your living room floor a crying mess, in a flash all the memories of you and Theseus started flooding your mind: from the night you met on the trolley, to going to your Great Aunts, to spending Christmas together, making love, roaming Hogwarts and the wizarding world. All those memories made your heart skip a beat, they were lovely. Yet a profound heaviness weighed on you from having to say goodbye to the man you love…you felt empty.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Where in the bloody hell did she run off to?!” Theseus yelled, frustrated and angry that you had to deal with this situation. This was the last thing Theseus wanted. Sure he was happy that Leta wasn’t dead but he didn’t want her romantically. He wasn’t in love with Leta, in fact he never was in love with her, he was in love with you, you and you only. His heart couldn’t bare the pain of how you must’ve felt. He was immensely upset with himself for hurting you, even though he didn’t do anything to actually hurt you, he still felt like it was his fault. Newt tried to calm his brother down, but it wasn’t working. So they both apparated to your home, thinking they would start looking for you there.
You heard a popping noise and look up to see Theseus and Newt in your kitchen. Theseus runs over to you and holds you tightly. “Theseus, I think it’s best that you leave” you say while he wipes the tears from your eyes. “I’m sorry but I can’t do that” he holds you even tighter, caressing your back. “Y/n, you mean everything to me, I thought I knew what love was before I met you, but I was wrong. Darling, you make my heart bigger, and my world brighter. I can’t imagine myself without you. You are my world, I’m in love with you, and only you,” Theseus proclaims with his cracking raspy voice, eyes filled with tears he grabs your face and kisses you with such a deep passion it was as if his love was transferring into your body, an energetic exchange that made you feel so much better, it was mending your broken heart back into it’s healed place.
You step back from Theseus and grab his hands, holding them firmly, lifting them up to your face. “Theseus, I love you, so so much, and I want you to be happy, no matter what, no matter how much it hurts me. Which is why I’m letting you go, you should be with Leta. She is your fiancé after all and well I can’t stand in your way,” tears stream down your face as you express yourself. Theseus felt like you stabbed him in the chest a million times over, those were not the words he was longing to hear, but he snapped out of his self pity in order to fight for you. “None sense!! How can you say such things? I won’t stand for it! How can you not see that I don’t want Leta! Why do you think I’m standing here before you. I want you y/n! I am unequivocally, undoubtably, and whole heartedly in love with you!” Theseus was yelling at this point, his arms flailing every which way as he spoke, his voice still raspy from being emotionally overwhelmed. You didn’t know what the right thing to do was anymore. So you did the most logical (or really not logical) thing you could think of. You ran outside to the nearest park as fast as you could, Theseus of course chases after you but this time Newt stops him. “Theseus if I may, maybe I can get through to her.”
You were sitting on the park bench about a half mile from your home. Your mind was sporadic again leaving you ever so confused. You didn’t hear Newt as he quietly walked up and sat next to you. “Y/n, I’m not much good at this type of thing but I do know love when I see it. Forgive me if I’m offending you in anyway but you seem like you have a middle head. I know your words to my brother were on the basis of moral grounds but believe me when I say Ive never seen him this way with anyone else, not even Leta. You know the woman I fancy, Tina, it took me a while to express how much she meant to me, and I regret not being more forthcoming with my feelings for her from the start” Newt speaks to you with a very caring soft voice, it soothed you a bit. “Oh Newt, thank you for your kind words. If I’m being honest I want nothing more than to be with Theseus but I don’t know if I’m making the right decision.” “Well y/n it is very seldom in life that we know we’re making the right decision for certain. The best we can do is follow our hearts” Newts voice turned into a whisper as he gazed into your eyes sweetly. It was in that moment that you decided to give love a chance again. Perhaps you were so scared to lose Theseus that you began pushing him away. “You’re right Newt….thank you….for everything.”
Theseus was standing in the dark some feet away from you and Newt. He heard the entire conversation and it warmed his heart to hear his brothers words. Theseus and Newt had indeed grown closer since the Grindelwald fiasco, they began understanding each other more, something Theseus had yearned for, for quite some time now. You gave Newt a big hug, you were so thankful for him that you couldn’t break away. “Mmm mmm” Theseus clears his throat walking up to you two. He reaches his hand out as you get up and then picks you up and twirls you around like he loved to do. Giggling you felt giddy again, what an emotional rollercoaster of a day for all of you. With your legs wrapped around his waist looking into Theseus’s eyes you whisper “I love you Theseus.” “I love you too y/n, I’m so sorry for everything you went through today, but I want you to know that I would never do anything to jeopardize us. I will never leave you, I will never stop loving you…..ever,” Theseus declares while placing a kiss on your forehead. The moment was perfect, Theseus felt like home, and Newt felt like family to you. Gratitude filled your heart for having such wonderful wizards in your life.
Without warning you all heard a popping noise and Leta appeared in front of you. You got down from being held by Theseus and whispered in his ear “I think you two should talk my love.” Theseus looked at you worried, “are you certain?” “Of course, you owe her an explanation Thes.” You and Newt walked back to your place to give them some space. Leta hastily walked up to Theseus “do you care to explain to me what’s going on?” Theseus took a deep breathe, “yes, I’m sorry Leta, after that night at your family’s tomb, it tore me apart that I lost you. You will always be someone I care for. You see, I thought what we had was true love, but I realized that I was wrong. I was never in love with you, and let’s face it, I don’t think you were ever in love with me either. I think it was just convenient for the both of us. I am in love now Leta….real love…and I want nothing more than for you to be happy and find your true love as well. It would be a great disservice to you if I continued on pretending.” Leta looked down, as much as it pained her to hear those words she knew Theseus was right. Leta loved Theseus but she was never in love with him. It struck her only then that she was still in love with Newt, Leta never wanted to admit this to herself. If she was being truthful, sadness overcame her because she knew she missed her chance with Newt. If only she had listened to her heart when the time was right. “I understand Theseus, I think we were both too scared to admit this before.” Leta slowly took off her engagement ring and placed it in Theseus’s hand. Theseus smiled at Leta “come, I want to introduce you to y/n, and I’m certain Newt would love to spend some time with you as well.”
You and Newt were drinking tea while he was explaining why it might be dangerous for you to try to swim with the kelpie. Newt stopped talking mid sentence and you saw Theseus and Leta walk in. It was a bit awkward at first but as the night went on you and Leta developed somewhat of a friendship. The four of you sat by the fire telling stories until about 2am. “Well id love to stay but I must get back to my flat” said Newt. “I’ll get going as well, Newt do you mind if I stay the night at your place?” Leta asked him. Newt was flustered, “um yeah sure I guess that would be fine.” You and Theseus looked at each other and giggled. You soon realized that Leta and Newt had quite a bit of history between them, and everything else made more sense to you. After they left Theseus wouldn’t stop staring at you smiling. “What Theseus?“ you giggle. “Im just happy is all. Happy I found you, happy to be in love with you, and happy you didn’t give up on us. Well you almost did, and quite frankly I would not have let that happen,” he chuckles. “Yeah, I’m happy too Thes” you say while getting lost in his eyes. “Now about that ministry job…”

Fantastic Beasts - The Secrets of Dumbledore semi-rant
I saw this movie yesterday and I have to say I'm very disappointed. It wasn't as bad as Crimes of Grindelwald, but it wasn't good either. Already the fact that I saw it only yesterday and not in theatres should be a bad sign. There was a time when I would have gone to the ends of the earth to see a movie set in the Harry Potter universe at the cinema. This time, I tried, found out they weren't showing it that night and said "oh, alright then, I'll do something else".
Also, I'm already forgetting half of what happened. It wasn't boring, but it wasn't gripping either. I paused it twice (TWICE! A HP movie!) to do other stuff. I'm reblogging and reposting the most visually pleasing parts of the film (which is a marvel to see, but that's probably its best quality), and that's it. Usually, I'm obsessed with the movies I've just watched, I look up theories, reviews, posts, reblogs, etc. For months if they're set in the harry potter universe.
There will be spoilers ahead.
Let's start with the good things:
the beasts. they are so beautiful and well done. cgi is mostly good, the way newt interacts with the animals he cares for is, as always, one of the best parts of the movie.
jacob's lines, which are always a delight
grindelwald - probably the best thing about the whole movie. i liked johnny depp, but i loved mads mikkelsen in the role. he and jude law have incredible chemistry.
on this note, grindeldore. oh, it was so good, and FINALLY warner brothers had the balls to call them for what they were. gay men in love. of course, it's too little too late, but at least it's a win.
the fighting scenes. there were many, and all wonderfully choreographed. too bad they were confusing af. what is that double, mirror dimension of sorts? no clue, it was never explained, it was a cheap attempt at making sure that the fights hurt no muggles or wizards and i hated it. it was never explained in harry potter, i think (maybe i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure) and while it looks great, i dislike it.
the parallel between the duel that killed ariana and when gellert tries to kill credence.
grindelwald as a seer.
the final scene.
that's basically it.
oh, everything and anything visual was great. except for maybe costumes but i'll talk about that later.
And now the bad stuff:
the writing. which is probably the worst thing ever to get wrong. the acting is good (except for eddie mumbling every single one of his lines which becomes annoying after a while), even great at times. but the writing is so bad.
i mean, jkr and steve kloves were the writers. and i know jkr has questionable views but she was never a bad writer. or better, she was never a bad novelist. i'm starting to think she sucks at screenplays.
the whole first part of the movie is useless. it's even explicitly stated inside the movie. well, that's bad writing my friends. if it was all for nothing, and no lessons/additional information that couldn't be read in a newspaper (i.e., grindelwald being allowed to run), then it's bad writing. it wasn't for the characters. it wasn't for the plot. so WHY DID YOU SHOW IT TO ME? when you could have saved time for more important things?
the movie is two hours and a half. after thirty minutes the wheels of the plot aren't even in motion. you would think that if the movie took its time it was to include meaningful dialogue and character development. but NOPE. it's for shenanigans like bunty and the trunks.
and i get their struggle, i do: fans want good duels and fighting scenes (and those are very good, especially the ones with Lalie and Gellert v. Albus). but fans also want the magical creatures. they want the beasts to have their space, and they need to show new ones. but then they also want grindeldore. alright, okay. let's show it. but what about good dialogues and high stakes? what about complex bidimensional characters? NOPE. no time for those.
this happens, of course, because there are TOO. MANY. USELESS. CHARACTERS. so many that, since they all need screen time, none of them gets explored in the right way. except maybe gellert.
nagini is gone. they don't even mention her. not even credence. not even when he talks with queenie, who can READ MINDS, so there was the perfect excuse to bring her up even if credence doesn't want to.
queenie is useless. i still don't understand why she joined grindelwald since she knows he hates muggles. while in his service she does NOTHING. she's not a double agent, she's not useful to either grindelwald or dumbledore. she's just there. of course i know they did this because they had to wrap things up in the end since there probably won't be a fourth movie, but couldn't they do it a little better?
maybe give her yusuf's screen time. since he's the worst character in terms of how he's written and he has no weight on the plot whatsoever. he doesn't have a mission, only has two scenes, isn't useful for the whole luggage subplot ... why is he even in this movie?
but at least, AT LEAST, they show him grieving for his sister (even though he just accepts to have his memories of her erased?? why was this done?? to show that gellert is bad? i mean, i think it's pretty obvious from the scene where he kills bambi...)
THESEUS you dick. why is he so happy? why is he not incoherent with grief? why does he not seethe with rage at the thought of leta, who he was going to marry? and not in the "ohi, you're under arrest "way. nono, in the blowing avada kedavras at vinda and grindelwald like a madman way. why doesn't he look sad and sombre?
they killed my leta FOR WHAT exactly? she was hands down the most complex character aside from grindeldore (which coincidentally are the only two whose story is actually told in the original saga). and maybe the single best performance on screen in all three movies. i don't get it. i hate it when female characters are killed off just to give male characters an origin story, but at least it gives them purpose. leta died just because. her death adds nothing to the story.
her replacement is lalie. now, i know that in this day and age god forbid you have a cast that is too white (you know, made up of witches and wizards from 1930 britain) and you need the token diversity character. it's irritating, but i get why they do it. i can forgive it. what i cannot forgive is how useless to the plot she is.
she was probably my favourite character of the whole movie, i enjoyed her sassiness and the way she used magic, but she is so. useless. why is she, or theseus, or yusuf, or jacob even, required for this mission? don't they all have jobs?? dumbledore needs to find a substitute teacher for his classes, porpentina is busy with work (AND SHE HAS THE SAME JOB TITLE AS THESEUS) so why are they all strolling about? i get newt and bounty, and maybe jacob since his bakery is in ruins, but what about the others?
more than that, what compels them to fight grindelwald? "Oh, it's the right thing to do!" NO YOU FOOLS, that's not enough. It's not compelling, it's BORING. especially when some of them have good reasons, in theory. theseus (and yusuf) lost leta. jacob lost queenie.
no idea why an american schoolteacher feels so touched by a german despot, but okay. i guess. she's nice but so bi-dimensional.
why do they need these people in particular? give me an "ocean's eleven" type of segment where you explain why these people and not 5 trained aurors.
dumbledore needs to send his own men because the ministry takes no stance like fudge did years later? because grindelwald has supporters in the british ministry that don't want this to happen? give me a scene where vinda goes to talk with her british cousins and gets them to support gellert and we see baby druella every reason is fine but there must be one.
the minerva mcgonagal cameo is useless. also, they didn't retcon what is clearly a mistake so... i hate it :)
vinda rosier gets 5 lines and no characterization whatsoever apart from being "pretty and evil". if she was less striking we probably wouldn't care about her as much. this woman has no motivations of her own, apparently. we don't even know what her relationship with grindelwald actually is.
and do not get me started on the other useless henchmen.
why do they force jacob to come along? why do they insist on putting a muggle in danger? albus is no seer but COME ON. we already saw grindelwald use people as scapegoats in the last movie, and it's clear he would do the same with jacob. "oh but he's a good man with courage" WHO CARES? are there no good men in 1930 england? where are all the brave gryffindors ffs?
it does NOT work. you know what would? JACOB wanting to go. JACOB demanding to go, because he hasn't given up on queenie and he wants to "save" her.
was it to confuse grindelwald? it doesn't work, because there isn't one (1) scene where he looks shocked, or even perplexed at the sight of a muggle with a wand.
and what about the whole thing with the tie? how could dumbledore know that theseus was going to get captured? even if he could predict that, you seriously want me to believe he was basing his rescue plan off the niffler??
also, we never see newt activate the portkey in that moment and that is not how portkeys work.
the whole subplot with bunty and the luggage was stupid. we know that there's a spell that literally duplicates objects by creating perfect copies, so it's a useless waste of time. also, why doesn't she use the switch that sets it to "muggle mode"? we've seen newt do it before.
the two candidates for supreme mugwump are absolutely the same. they have no personality and are just namesakes.
the german minister of magic contradicts himself more than once in the film. i watched his scenes twice and i still don't understand his motives. there must be a cut scene or something because one minute he implies that he doesn't like grindelwald and the next he's chilling with him and his men. he openly says that he thinks GG will lose just as he sees him arriving by means of crowd-surfing. it's not like he turns a blind eye and that is why gellert wins. no, the man actively enables him and helps him. WHY?! have vinda or even yusuf put him under the imperius curse ffs!
how do credence and aberforth have communicating mirrors? no idea. it's never explained.
why is the phoenix dying because credence is dying? phoenixes have their own independent cycle of life and rebirth. we see this with fawkes. otherwise, why isn't fawkes dying when dumbledore is in book 6? it's never explained.
This all comes down to the main problem of the movie: this movie has no dialogues. seriously, all they do is duel and say vague things like "the plan is no plan". fuck off. they don't even state clearly why the plan is no plan, they say vague stuff, the characters acknowledge it's confusing and then they laugh about it.
SPOILER: even if you acknowledge your mistakes in the story itself ("oh, we don't know what to do against grindelwald" or "oh, we're back where we started ahaha") it DOESN'T MAKE IT GOOD. actually, it makes it worse. it's just lazy writing.
Nothing is explained to the audience because the movie uses "show not tell" to the extreme. fine, don't tell, but please at least give a name to what we're seeing. good stories are character-driven. this one is not.
seriously, none of them has one good dialogue, that isn't full of clichés.
finally, one last thing that really bothered me. why why why are they all dressed like muggles? the costumes look amazing - my personal favourite was eulalie's gold evening gown - but WHY are they all dressed like muggles? yes, there is a little outfit change for eulalie when she goes to pick up jacob that maybe should underline the differences between wizard and muggle clothing - there are none.
albus dumbledore and gellert grindelwald should all be donning the most campy over-the-top wizard robes. why would grindelwald ever be dressed like a muggle? it doesn't make sense, especially since albus is described more than once as being ignorant of muggle clothing rules. alright, he's younger here, but how is it that he and gellert don't look even a little out of place at the beginning of the movie?
don't get me wrong, i think the costumes are absolutely beautiful and i would kill to have them in any other film BUT THIS ONE. because they don't fit the characters at all. all of these wizards dressed like muggles, i don't get it.
the worst offender of all, imo is pureblood dark witch vinda rosier who dresses in a suit to a fancy wizard party. her outfit is amazing and high fashion and exactly my style... i adore it. i, a muggle, would definitely wear it. the question is- why would she?

This is what I strive to look like at social gatherings. I want this to be me and my future husband. I just don't think it's the right look for them.

Salty Tea
*Theseus Scamander, Leta Lestrange, and Tina Goldstein enter the break room of the Ministry of Magic. They chat happily as Theseus makes them tea.*
*Just then, Gunnar Grimmson saunters in, humming merrily. He opens the cupboard and grabs a teapot and teacup.*
Theseus: Well, you're certainly in a good mood today, Grimmson.
Grimmson: Yes, indeed! My darling's break will be starting soon. I thought I’d surprise her with her favorite tea.
Leta: You don't have a girlfriend.
Grimmson: *turning to Leta* YET. I don't have her YET. Slowly but surely, it'll happen.
Theseus: *politely* Well, I wish you all the best.
Grimmson: *grabs a teaspoon from the drawer* Yeah yeah.
*Grimmson goes to the cupboard by the fridge to get sugar as Newt Scamander, Theseus’s younger brother, walks in. Newt opens the fridge, accidentally hitting Grimmson with it as Grimmson was about to grab the sugar container.*
Grimmson: *turning to Newt* Hey! Are you blind? Watch it.
Newt: *mutters* Sorry.
*Newt quickly grabs the carton of milk and proceeds to get what he needed to make himself some tea.*
*Grimmson's hand, which had been right in front of the sugar container until he got hit by the fridge door, accidentally moved in front of the salt container. Distracted by the sudden hit, he accidentally retrieved the salt container and took it to the counter. He started to make the tea.*
Theseus: Newt!
*Newt turns around. Theseus, Tina, and Leta happily greet him, and he smiles and greets them back. Then, he starts to make his tea.*
*Theseus Leta, and Tina had been conversing when Theseus looks over at the ingredients that Grimmson was using. Theseus noticed the salt container in Grimmson’s hand, and his eyes widened.*
Theseus: *whispers to Tina and Leta and points at the counter where the ingredients are* Look, he used salt instead of sugar.
*Tina and Leta smile amusedly.*
Theseus: *to Grimmson* Hey, you put –
*Tina tugs on Theseus’s arm to quiet him. He looks at her as she smiles mischievously.*
Tina: *whispers* Why get involved? Let him make it.
Leta: *in a hushed voice* And enjoy the show afterwards.
*Grimmson looks over at them suspiciously; Newt, curiously. Leta and Tina look at Grimmson.*
Leta: We were just talking about how nice it is that you’re making her tea.
Tina: Yeah. She'll appreciate the sweet gesture.
Grimmson: I would think so. Anyways it's men’s job to take care of women. Both of you should be more like her instead of trying to pretend you’re like men.
*Grimmson turns back around to finish making the tea. Newt goes back to making his tea and shakes his head at Grimmson’s comment, annoyed. Tina and Leta roll their eyes and look back at Theseus, their eyes asking him to please not say anything and let Grimmson give the woman the salty tea. Theseus, who has spoken up numerous times against Grimmson’s misogyny only for it to go in one ear and out the other every time, gives a small sigh and nods to his friends.*
*When Newt’s tea is finished, Newt takes it and walks over to Theseus, Tina, and Leta. The women smile mischievously and whisper to Newt about what Grimmson did to the tea. Newt covers his mouth, stifling a laugh.*
*Grimmson takes the prepared tea and walks to the door, seductively.*
Grimmson: Mary, I thought I’d surprise you with your favorite drink!
*Tina, Newt, and Leta gasp as Theseus smiles like a child on Christmas Day.*
Leta: It's for Mary?!?! Mary Anderson? Oh God.
Newt: We’ve got to stop Grimmson.
Tina: *yells* Mary—-
*Theseus tugs on Tina’s arm to silence her.*
Theseus: *points his wand at the three of them* None of you say a word. Let her drink it.
*They look at him incredulously.*
Theseus: What? She had it coming.
Leta: Theseus!
Theseus: Oh come on. She didn't like that I was chosen over her for the Head Auror position! She's been retaliating against me for it.
Leta: Yeah, but she's my boss.
Tina: She's not my boss, but pranking her could make her more mad.
Newt: I agree.
Theseus: Neither of you put the salt in her tea. And neither did I. We’ll be fine! Salt won't kill her.
*Theseus walks out the door, smiling excitedly. Tina, Newt, and Leta look at each other and follow him to Mary’s office.*
*Theseus stands at the edge of the door, peeking inside eagerly. Leta, Newt, and Tina walk into view.*
Leta: *loudly* You know, it's interesting. Salt is so universal in cooking, even in drinks. It improves the flavor in so many things.
*As Leta talks, Tina and Newt motion with their hands to not drink the tea. Mary and Grimmson look at the four people in the doorway, confused.*
Leta: However, it doesn’t make everything taste good.
*Theseus glares at Leta before turning back to Mary.*
Leta: As a matter of fact, it’ll make some things taste worse!
*As Leta talks, Theseus looks at Mary his eyes begging her to not understand what Leta, Tina, and Newt were trying to tell her and to just take a sip.*
Leta: Salt and sugar look the same. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference just by looking at it, but you could by tasting it. But is that really a risk worth taking?
*Mary looks at the tea Grimmson had given her and starts to laugh, finally getting it.*
Grimmson: What is it?
Mary: Nothing. Nothing.
*Torquil Travers, Theseus’s boss, walks into Anderson’s office.*
Mary: Mr. Travers!
Travers: Mary! How are you doing?
Mary: Very well, thank you. Gunnar just made me some tea. I haven't had it yet. Why don't you try it?
*Theseus gasps as Leta, Newt, and Tina push him away from the door. The four of them speed away from Mary’s office.*
Travers: *to Mary* No, of course not. He made it specifically for you.
Mary: And while I do appreciate that, I just had some tea a little while ago. I think I'm good for now. Maybe he can make it again a different day. I'm sure he'd be fine if you had it. You look like you’ve been having a tiring day.
Travers: *smiles* That I have. Alright, if you insist.
*Travers sits down and takes a sip of the tea. His smile disappears.*
Grimmson: What is it?
*The liquid remains in Travers's mouth for a little bit. He looks at Grimmson in horror.*
*Travers eyes Grimmson and thinks You mad man. You can't even get this right. You'll never be able to get married.*
Grimmson: Say something, Mr. Travers!
*Travers forces himself to swallow the tea in his mouth. His eyes clamp shut in disgust.*
Travers: It’s…um…
Grimmson: No matter. *He takes the tea from Travers.* It's for Mary, anyway.
Grimmson: *to Mary* Just drink from the opposite side of where he drunk.
Travers: *as he grabs the cup* No, I think it's better if she doesn't take it. I think she'd prefer it with sugar anyway.
Grimmson: I put sugar in it!
Travers: No, you didn’t, you idiot! You put salt in it!
*Mary bites her lip, stifling a laugh.*
Grimmson: I did?
Travers: Yes!
Grimmson: …Oh…
Travers: *to Mary* I'll do you a favor and dump this out.
*Mary nods to him amusedly. He gets up, takes the cup, and heads to the break room.*
Mary: Thanks anyway, Gunnar.
*Grimmson gives her an embarrassed smile.*

When were you planning to tell us?: Theseus Scamander x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: During their wedding your recently married friends can't stop asking questions about your "mysterious" husband. Little they know he is the same man who has been flirting with you during all the ceremony
Warnings: Drinking a little, I guess? But nothing else except that Jacob and Queenie being unaware of the world around them; Leta and Theseus ot being able to hide their chuckles; and Dumbledore being a funny smartass. Takes place after Dumbledore's secrets and in Au where Leta doesn't die and she wasn't enganged with Thesesus
Requested: yes
Words: Around 1130
Author rambles: This is kind of inspired in a wedding I attended a couple of years ago and the situation fitted quite well with the request

Bright smiles, sparky eyes and some tears of pure happiness, that was a quick and accurate way to describe most weddings. Jacob’s and Queenie’s was not an exception to this. A small and intimate ceremony on the bakery, only family and friends attending, perfect for the couple union. While the bride and the groom, now wife and husband, were looking at each other with love-dove eyes, you and the rest of the guests were enjoying the sight.
“She looks beautiful today, even more that normally” You whispered to Theseus who was by your side leaning in the desserts table.
“I still believe you were prettier in your wedding” He replied a small grin playing on his lips.
“You are a charmer with words, Theseus Scamander” Your hands slowly moved to take two glasses of champagne, handing one of them to your companion.
“Only because you deserve it, darling” He took a quick sip of the pinkish beverage, which had been Queenie’s idea.
You would have scolded him for his smarmy antics if it wasn’t for your nosy friends who had been half-listening to your talk. Yeah, a small bakery was definitely not the best place to hold a private conversation. It wasn’t long until Mr and Mrs Kowalski came to your way with a mixture of curiosity and surprise.
“y/n you never told us you had been married, honey” Queenie sweet voice echoed in your ears. The realization hit you, you had been caught.
“Actually, I still am” Thesus couldn’t help but chuckle at your words.
“And who is the lucky man?” Jacob managed to speak while taking a bite from the nuptial cake “Do we know him?”
Theseus cheeks were starting to tint in a similar tone to his hair. You wondered how an auror like him, who has supposed to be calm and stern in every situation, couldn’t stop that grin from spreading on his face right now. Luckily for the two of you, Leta Lestrange, your best friend since your Hogwarts years (your guardian angel as you should call her from now on), appeared on the scene.
“What is the fuss for?” she joined the group and thanks to her endearing smile and her ability to put the focus on herself in every situation, you could enjoy a few seconds to think what would you say next. You were so relived thanks to her entry that you didn’t even get annoyed when she playfully stole your glass of champagne.
“y/n has just told us that she is married” The bride explained enthusiastically.
“Ohh…” Great, the last thing you needed right now was another person who couldn’t keep a secret to save her life. Surprisingly, she decided to play along. After all a little fun never hurt anyone “Of course she is, I was the bridesmaid”
“Leta…” You tried to interrupt her in order to finally reveal the truth.
“Wonderful!” Queenie clapped “So you can tell us more about that mysterious husband of hers”
“Yeah y/n, you never told us anything about him” Theseus took a sip of his drink and still he couldn’t hide his smirk.
Oh, he made a big mistake… Never play games with a girl who can play them better, Scamander. You should remind him that later.
“Well, he is the perfect gentleman. Sweet, chivalrous, caring…” You dreamingly looked at the celling “But also a little bossy, stubborn, touchy too. And he always overworks himself with his job to the point its annoying” Your audience was expectant to hear more about it. Theseus tried his best not to look slightly offended while Leta patted his back.
“But you love him, don’t you?” The older Scamander brother asked, his eyes shinning hopefully. One of the many things that made you fall for him since the first day.
“With every piece of my heart” Your gaze was locked in his.
That intimate moment which had somehow grown in a room full of people faded a wide the instance the door’s bell rang, announcing Tina’s and Newt’s arrival in the bakery. God knew what they had been talking about while the rest of you were enjoying the desserts.
“Guys, you will never guess what happened” Jacob said as soon as they came to his sight.
“Y/n is married!” Queenie announced as the sweet gossiper she was.
The young magizoologist’s eyes travelled back and forwards from yours and his brother’s face, clearly confused. The elder Goldstein sister just looked unaware, waiting for an explanation.
“Of course, she is” Newt finally broke the silence “I was the best man”
“You too?” Jacob said surprised “Are we the last ones to discover this?”
“I didn’t know until today either, Mr Kowalski. Although I have been having my suspicions since you two were students. You have never been good at hiding your feelings, Miss l/n”
Dumbledore laughed from the other side of the room where he was leaning on the wall absent-mindedly eating his piece of cake. A privileged position which he took advantage of to listen to the whole discussion.
“Or should I say Mrs Scamander now? Congrats anyway, thanks to your marriage Professor McGonagall owes me ten galleons now” Gasps of shock echoed between the bakery’s walls.
Your husband made himself comfortable, his hands now proudly around your waist in a gentle grip.
“Thanks Professor” he replied.
“When did you make it official if I can ask?”
“Just after he returned from the war. We wanted to keep it simple, Newt and Leta were the only guests” You softly squeezed your husbands hand.
“And when were you planning to tell us?”
“Jacob, sweetie, focus on what is important” His wife corrected him “Why didn’t you tell us?”
You two shrugged the question off. Being honest, you had never truly hidden your union, not intentionally at least. Theseus did not wear his ring on his finger, but in a necklace around his neck. Too afraid that he would lose it in a mission due to his work as an auror; so you decided to do the same. He didn’t keep the gesture of love low-key either. Always calling you pet names or protectively staying by your side. But it was true he did the same for Leta and his brother, and that kisses were always reserved for closed doors for unknown reasons. With those reasons, it was understandable that your friends hadn’t realized sooner you were in fact married. They just took you for an old friend duo. How wrong they were, but as no correction had been said before by either of you they were still ignorant of the fact.
As they say: “Actions speak louder than words” and that was exactly what your husband did. Arms tangled around your hip and lips that were leaning for a kiss which ended up in a resounding applause. In the next years you would receive endless teasing for it, but enjoying the moment you couldn’t care any less about it.

slip of the tongue part 3 - reckoning
Theseus Scamander x Reader
Tumblr media
"Keep your hands to yourself!" You snap, trying to infuse as much venom into your voice as possible. "I can't," he groans.
summary: a second mission with newt and the group reintroduces theseus's former fiancée, leta lestrange, into the mix. old wounds and insecurities flare as you both reckon with your pasts and make decisions that determine your future.
fem!reader. theseus scamander x reader.
category: romance with plot. some smut. slight angst!! non-canon compliant.
warnings: 18+ smut, semi-public inappropriate touching, dirty talk, hand kink
part one / part two / part three
author's note: it's funny how the title of this fic doesn't really fit anymore HAHA, goes to show that i did not plan this story at all. this part is going to be LONGER & more focused on plot & their character development! hope you enjoy, as always let me know if you'd like me to continue :)
The surreal, electric buzz from the gala dissipates as soon as you enter the elevator at the Hotel de Rome with Theseus.
Theseus's jacket is so large you're practically drowning in it, the sleeves hang well past your hands. You feel like a little girl in a nightgown. The elevator pulleys burr mechanically as it slowly rises, the electric bulb light casting your face in a sickly, ghastly light. The backs of your high heels have begun to dig painfully into your skin, that stinging pain the only thing grounding you to reality, that and Theseus's warm body beside you. You're positive your feet are bleeding.
Your weariness is mirrored in everyone else's faces when you walk into the hotel room at last. It's obvious that they're all overextended. There's no semblance of victoriousness, even after your successful heist.
Newt stands, alert, at the sight of his brother.
"Theseus! Finally, I was beginning to worry-"
"I'm fine, brother," Theseus waves him off. His hair is slightly damp from the snowfall, and his dress shirt as well. "We got caught up, but we're fine."
When Newt turns to speak to you, his lips part but no words come out. He's staring at your mouth. He looks pale and horrified.
"What?" You turn to the others and to Theseus in uncertainty. Tina and Jacob are also looking at you with newfound distress, but Theseus seems as clueless as you, frowning warily at Newt.
Newt makes as if to bring a hand to your face but pulls back at the last moment.
"Oh dear," Newt says. "Y-Your lipstick is smeared... I'm so terribly sorry, Y/N. And your hair—I didn’t think Dietrich would actually-"
Theseus half-raises an arm, cutting his brother short, looking admonished.
“Actually, Newt, that would be my doing...”
Your face warms considerably. Newt chokes on his words.
“Oh…” He turns to the rest of the group, his face nearly flushed as yours. Jacob lets out a strangled noise and Tina does a discreet double-take between you and Theseus.
“Well,” says Newt, mercifully changing the subject. “We all made off fantastically. Good work.”
You want to share in his congratulations, but it feels premature with Grindelwald still at large. It doesn't feel as though you have much to celebrate in this tiny hotel room, the five of you still standing awkwardly in your evening wear.
"What now?" Asks Tina.
Newt sits on one of the two twin-sized beds and hunches over, forearms on his legs. He is your designated leader, but you have to admit he looks so small and frail without his coat. Thin and unsure of himself.
"I have it on good authority that Credence will be at a mausoleum in the French Alps. He could be heading there now, we have no way of knowing, but he is planning on going there soon. Tomorrow, maybe."
"Why?" Tina's face is full of emotion. You don't know who Credence is, or why he is important to the resistance, but you don't feel that now is the time to ask. It stuns you, the subtlety of her expression, how someone can look so crushed and full of love at once.
"He's, erm, searching for his ancestral records I believe," Newt answers. "The Lestrange artifacts and family tree were moved there from the cemetery in Paris, possibly by Grindelwald. This is likely all a trap set for Credence, but this could very well be our last chance to intercept him. To save him."
Tina is speechless, Jacob nods solemnly.
"Y/N," says Newt. It startles you to hear him say your name in all of this deliberation. "I know you probably don't understand half of what we're saying, and we understand if you don't want to come. But we'll likely run into Grindelwald and his followers. They're after Credence. We could use you."
You don't even have to think.
"Of course, Newt. I go where Theseus goes." You wonder if you sound too intense, too devoted, so you add: "And besides, I want to be of any help that I can."
Theseus reaches out and clasps your hand in his. It thrills you, for him to do this in front of his brother, in front of the others. Your heart races, happily so.
Newt smiles at the sight.
"Sleep," he turns to everyone. "We leave first thing in the morning."
----
The next day, by the time you make it to the French Alps in spats of apparition and stretches of traveling by train, it is nearly dusk again.
You and Theseus had slept like the dead in the too-small hotel room bed, with Tina in the other bed and Jacob and Newt, in a turn of events beyond your understanding, in some hidden compartment within Newt's brown leather suitcase. Strange, but you didn't question it. Your bodies ached when you woke, but it felt like heaven to you, being held by him, you wouldn't have traded it for the world.
"I'm too big for this bed," he lamented, stretching his limbs, when the two of you woke in the morning.
"Hmm, yeah. Too big... " When you smiled coyly and narrowed your eyes at him he threw a pillow at your face. You caught it with a laugh.
"Naughty," he chided.
"The resistance," as Theseus had once jokingly called it, turned out to be not so glamorous after all. The resistance was perpetually tired and forever embarking on some haphazard plans only half-understood.
But when you set foot at the base of the mountains in the Alps, you feel bizarrely energized. This is what you imagined the work of an Auror would be like, chasing leads, pursuing justice through crowded cities and rugged terrain. It feels good to be so proactive after a year of being more or less cooped up in an office at the Ministry. And, best of all, Theseus is here with you. And he wants you, if not your heart then your body, at last, at least...
"This can't be it, Newt," you hear Jacob say, his breath pluming in front of him in small huffs. He struggles through the thick snowbed to catch up to Newt, who is a bit ahead of the group. You're in what looks like a forest clearing, the mountains rise in the distance, gargantuan and feeling a bit holy in their emptiness, their silence.
"He's right. There's nothing out here," calls Tina.
It's a winter forest. A killing wood. In truth, you’ve never been so cold in your entire life. The whole world has turned white as death: white blizzard blotting the air, thick blankets of fresh snow carpet the ground, and everywhere outside the clearing are great white pines standing like sentries, their edges blurred and softened by the snow fog.
You can see what’s in front of you, but you can’t see what’s coming.
Newt walks clumsily back through the budding blizzard to rejoin the group.
"The mausoleum should be a bit uphill from here!" He assures. "It's concealed by magic. Credence doesn't know, but we need someone with the blood of a Lestrange to enter."
The blood of a Lestrange.
Before you can even make the connection, Theseus stiffens beside you and drops your hand.
"Newt, you didn't." His voice is grave.
"I'm so sorry."
You wonder in a shrugging, aloof way why Newt looks to you after saying this to Theseus. It still doesn't mean anything to you.
A branch cracks, a high, ear-splitting sound like a broken bone. When you see the figure emerge from the tree line, your hand is already on your wand.
Grindelwald, you think.
But then Theseus's arm snaps out to yours, stilling your hand, almost just as quick.
"Don't." He says.
She approaches you slowly and you make out who it is almost immediately, just by the shape of her silhouette. Theseus and Newt's reactions make sense now, it all clicks into place with resounding dread. You feel the word "oh" in the pit of your stomach like a dropped stone.
Floating from the forest like that, in her wine-colored silk dress and black coat, Leta Lestrange really does look something like a ghost, or an angel...
When she approaches she walks straight to Theseus.
"Newt wrote to me," she says loud enough for everyone to hear, but she is only looking at Theseus. Looking at him like she's searching for some lifeline there. "Credence thinks he's my brother... We both know this cannot be true. I can help you get inside the mausoleum. I want to help you."
You dare to look at Theseus, bracing yourself. He looks genuinely stricken, lips parted, palms open and hanging limp beside him. So little affects him, he's so confident and secure in himself. But there in the clearing, the look on his face...
Before anyone can speak Newt steps forward again.
"I'm so sorry, but we need to get to Credence before Grindelwald. We have to go. Credence is... sensitive. He's afraid. It's best Tina and I go ahead. Leta, Theseus," he turns to the two, who are having some silent conversation with their eyes. It's so private and familiar you have to look away, you want to scream. "You two follow closely behind."
"What about me?" Jacob chimes in with a nervous laugh.
Newt tilts his head and gives Jacob a sympathetic smile.
"Don't worry, my friend. I won't leave you to the wolves. Y/N is a brilliant duelist and a master of all sorts of charms. You two will stay at the very back and wait outside the mausoleum. We can't afford to frighten Credence, and you need to alert us if you see any of Grindelwald's followers coming our way."
You nod numbly. Some roaring white noise fills your ears, anesthetizing the scene in front of you.
"Theseus," you hear Leta say softly. She places a gloved hand on his forearm. "Can I speak with you on the way there?"
"Of course," he responds, graciously, easily. She leads him up ahead.
You keep hoping Theseus will turn to you, even just to look back at you, to reassure, to reconnect now that Leta has been thrust back into the mix between you.
He does not turn back. You stare blankly at the back of his head as it disappears in the blurring snow. He follows Leta into the woods like a man being swept away by magic, following some siren song you can't hear.
'I can't compete with her,' you realize achingly. The truth rings dully in the pit of your stomach, metallically. 'They were engaged. They've been connected since childhood... I'm nothing.'
You try not to wring your hands or shuffle your feet, try not to look like someone left behind, wounded. You blink at the delicate crystals of snow that land on your lashes, hoping that the others don't mistake them for tears.
Newt comes over to you cautiously. He's not one for knowing what to say, but he's perceptive, and kind. Sinking, sinking, you can feel your heart being pulled to your feet and swallowed by the ground.
"Y/N," he begins. "I'm sure... When they were together—but when they separated…" He swallows and starts again. "I’m quite sure my brother’s mind is made up. I know he cares for you too, though I don’t know if he made you any promises-"
“He did not,” your voice sounds acrid, bitter to your ears, petulant, and you hate it. “It’s fine, really.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, it’s okay. He doesn’t owe me anything.”
'And I don't owe him anything,' you finish in your mind. When really you love him like breathing, need him like water. You're just trying not to let it show.
You want to be nonchalant and unaffected, want to give only what he’ll take. You don’t want to ask for too much.
You don’t know why loving always takes the form of limitation with you. You withheld your feelings for him for nearly a year. You only ever do what he asks. You turned down jobs and tried your best not to burden him with your feelings, with your past.
Why this mode of loving, why starvation and restraint, when love itself, for you, felt like every door in you burst open at the sight of his face? It was a wild and unwieldy joy, a freeing sort of affection that you felt for him. Now and always.
You swallow thickly, embarrassed at the speed at which he abandoned you for her. Embarrassed by the way Tina and Newt and Jacob, even, are looking at you.
"Let's go," you say, trying to sound encouraging. Newt and Tina run ahead. You and Jacob walk in silence uphill, trudging through the snow.
----
In the end you don't see any action at all. The mausoleum appeared at Leta's beckoning, a wave of her wand and the stunning glass building, hexagonal, glittered into solidity in front of you. You and Jacob waited outside, as instructed, but through the thick, crystalline glass you could make out that the bodies and artifacts were housed in beautiful stone tombs, scattered in the glass room like giant chess pieces, and you could see what unfolded within.
Leta, Newt, and Tina were talking to Credence. They met him down where he was crouched on the floor, explaining something to him in hushed tones. He was sobbing so softly. And then he was gone, and so was Tina, who left with him.
You feel so utterly mute, so adrift, you're glad that Jacob doesn't speak to you.
Newt is the one who jogs out to you and Jacob. Theseus is still inside talking to Leta, who seems sad in a soft, unperturbed way. He's gazing at her so gently as she speaks. It's the way he looks at small animals, and children, and the people he loves.
Looking at them feels like looking at a photograph, or like looking through the windows at Primrose Hill when you were a child, before you'd outgrown the title of "orphan." You would escape the orphanage to peek into the townhouses, the family homes overlooking Regent's Park. Dining tables and grand pianos, all the lights on. Nothing to hide...
"Y/N," Newt says breathlessly. "We better get going. We beat Grindelwald here, but I don't know by how much."
You cross your arms to help with the cold.
"Okay. Where are we going-"
"Oh, it's probably best if you go back to London. Back to the Ministry. Lay low until you hear from me, or Dumbledore."
You don't know why his goodbye is so cutting. You know that he's not abandoning you too, but it's almost too much.
He purses his lips sympathetically.
"Stay safe, Y/N. Grindelwald is planning something big. But if we act any earlier Grindelwald and the Ministry will be onto us and our efforts will have been in vain."
"I know," you say. "I understand."
You apparate away without another word. You try not to think about the two of them, in the forest clearing, in the glass mausoleum, together in all the years before that, but you allow yourself to wonder when Theseus will notice that you're gone.
----
On Monday you call in sick. You've never called in sick once in your entire time at the Ministry, so your request for a sick day is accepted easily and without complaint.
You sleep the whole day and do not answer the door when you hear the knocks. Knowing who they belong to is agonizing enough. He'd never been to your place before, but you can't imagine that it was difficult for him to procure the address.
You wake from your day of fitful, restless sleeping around 2am. Moonlight streams cold and bright through your chiffon curtains, filling your apartment with blue and silver shadows that you find comforting, beautiful maybe.
When you pad out into your living room, barefoot, you see a letter on the hardwood floor. A creamy envelope that had been slipped under the doorframe, waiting there for you like magic.
You bend down to pick it up and open it. There's nothing on the envelope itself, but you'd know him by handwriting alone, by his breathing, his scent.
Dear Y/N,
I know you're not sick. Because you're never sick. You have the most formidable immune system I've ever come across and I think muggle doctors should study you in a lab for it. But, I confess, that's beside the point...
I know you're cross with me. Please, if I have upset you or, worse, if I've broken your heart, I can assure you it was never my intention. Meaning: if I hurt you it is because I am a fool, and not because you are deserving of any hurt.
Forgive me for my behavior yesterday. I needed to resolve some things, and Leta's arrival was a true shock for me. I behaved poorly to you, but even more unforgivably to Leta, who I left mere weeks before our wedding, confessing my love for another woman. The pain I've caused her haunts me, and I was happy to be absolved of it yesterday evening. Happy to answer her questions and to be forgiven. But I should not have left you there alone. I should not have let go of your hand. I damn myself, because as much as I love you, it seems I've never been able to do it well.
I hope this pitiful explanation and guileless apology will suffice. Come, pretty girl. Come to work tomorrow, I beg you. My whole life is on the floor without you, nothing works, my head's a mess.
Yours,
T
You heart clenches painfully. Your lungs constrict and your hand tightens around the letter. You love him. You want to let it go, what happened between him and Leta, and you and him, in the clearing.
But you can't.
----
Apparently, it's going to be a week of first-times. Because, also for the first time in your career at the Ministry, you are running late.
"Fuck," you hiss to yourself. You hate traveling by Floo Flame, are used to the muggle comforts of walking and the London Underground, but you don't have time.
You dust off the fireplace ash from your shoulders as you walk through the British Ministry.
"Y/N!" you hear. The voice slices through the bustle and noise of the suit-clad workers not with its volume but with its familiarity.
It's him.
'Oh, god. Already?' You'd been hoping to avoid Theseus today. An impossible task, considering he was your boss, but you'd taken on more impossible tasks before. Bigger monsters.
"Y/N, hold on!" Theseus shouts again.
You have to speed up your walking to a near-comical pace to escape his long-legged strides. Hard to do in heels.
You turn your body sideways and push forward through a thicket of office workers with an "Excuse me! So sorry!" to shoulder your way into an empty elevator.
You slump against the back wall, exhaling deeply in relief. No Theseus-encounter after all. You really managed to-
"Aha!" Theseus exclaims, interjecting his overstretched hand just as the elevator doors begin to close. "Perfect. I was just looking for you, Y/N."
You don't respond, but huff in indignation and move aside, making room for him in the small elevator. He presses your floor number, level two, looking far too self-satisfied for someone who just ran across the marble floors of the Ministry of Magic, unrepentantly.
Your heart pounds as the elevator begins to move, you don't know why you can't look at him. Maybe it's because you know, if you did, all would be forgiven. You jolt when he leans forward and pulls the emergency break. The elevator comes to a jerking, screeching halt.
When he looks at you, sidelong, your stomach flips.
"C'mere," he mumbles, and moves to trap your body against the wall.
Your body responds differently than your mouth, arching against the wall, pushing closer to him.
"Ugh, no," you say, mournfully. You want it bad, want him. But you're still angry. It's oddly possessing, the notion that just a kiss from him could save you.
Your words do give him pause, however. He's standing so close to you he basically has you up against the wall, there's no escaping him. His chest heaves, you can feel his breath against your face. You want to press his open mouth to yours, to taste it, open yours to his tongue.
"No?" He echoes dubiously. "Did... did you not get my letter?"
"I got your letter," you retort, feeling flustered. "I found it... insufficient."
He starts forward again, a hand cups your ass. You slap it away.
"Keep your hands to yourself!" You snap, trying to infuse as much venom into your voice as possible.
"I can't," he groans.
"Try harder."
"I am rational and measured about all things in life, except for this, for you."
"Try harder," you say again, more forcefully, ignoring him.
"Hmm," he hums, considering. You don't move this time when his hand traces your thigh through the material of your skirt, you just stare, mesmerized. Your skin breaks out in chills. His fingertips move in lazy, dancing circles.
His hands, his fucking hands. They're so big. Long, elegant fingers with large knuckles. The veins there, the fact that you know what his fingers feel like inside of you...
Theseus follows your gaze with his eyes and scoffs, but not unkindly.
"You want my fingers inside of you, baby?"
He doesn't wait, and when you don't protest he doesn't stop. His hands slide under your skirt, one of his thumbs is pressing firmly against your clit through the lacy material of your underwear. He applies such a steady, unmoving pressure, staring into your eyes relentlessly and leaning his thumb harder and harder into that one spot until you squirm back against the wall with a ragged moan, breaking his burning gaze, not sure if you're more desperate to escape the sensation or to keep feeling it, over and over again.
"Theseus," his name sounds filthy out of your mouth, heady as a moan, though you're actually trying to tell him something. "Really, I just-"
The elevator lurches forward again, shuddering in place for a few moments before resuming its path with a piercing screech. You tumble into Theseus, losing your balance, and he catches you with both his arms.
"What did-"
"I don't know," he says, helping you right yourself, looking over his shoulder at the doors.
The elevator stops at level six, the Department of Magical Transportation. Your face is still flushed red and tingling with heat when the ornamental brass doors slide open and the two of you are greeted by a curious, gawking group of wizards that includes the department head, Mr. Silas Elodius.
"Oh, heavens! Mr. Scamander, it's you," Silas Elodius is a unfailingly happy, plump man. "We were wondering what must've happened! It seemed the two of you got stuck. Well, all sorted now!" He laughs heartily. "Trust our department to get you moving again."
Theseus returns the laugh, a little less enthusiastically. The both of you move against the back wall of the elevator to allow the large group to shuffle in.
"Excuse us, we're headed to level three," Silas smiles wildly, toothily. He tends to talk through his smiling, which makes his next admission all the more horrific. "Terrible accident involving a misplaced potion bottle on the Knight Bus! Boom! Limbs lost. Really nasty business."
"Erm," Theseus seems shaken, at a loss of how to respond, which is uncommon for him. "We'll be level two."
"Right, of course!" Mr. Elodius motions impatiently for one of his several colleagues to press the button. With the combined weight of everyone there, the elevator moves slowly, dragging sluggishly upwards through space. Thankfully, the group does not turn back to you or Theseus, preoccupied with their own small conversations.
Your heart is still thumping pitifully, your pussy still throbbing and aching around nothing, craving his fingers, stuffed inside. You're wet, and there is no relief in sight. But you still want, need, to be mad at him.
"Y/N," Theseus is leaning in, speaking so low that only you can hear him. The sound of your name in his mouth, it's a purr, a plea.
You shudder. "Theseus, please don't."
"If this were my office," he whispers. His hand returns to the front of your skirt, slips beneath the hemline and nudges your underwear aside, slides up, embarrassingly easily, between your slick folds. You lean back against the wall in silent prayer, for him. You're frozen, incapable of moving, incapable of telling him to stop.
"If this were my office," he continues, voice thick and ragged. His finger moves leisurely, pumping in and out, driving you crazy. "I'd have you on my desk with your legs up. And I'd lick you until you cried. I bet you're such a pretty crier. I wanna make you come on my mouth, my tongue."
It takes everything in you to remain quiet, to remain still. Just as you begin to lose yourself in the feeling, your head going pleasantly fuzzy, the elevator dings and he retracts his hand, smoothly, unfussily.
He looks so unaffected, leaning back against the wall. It's you who has to bow your head to avoid Mr. Elodius's eyeline. Your knees tremble.
"Well, this is us! Best of luck, Scamander." Mr. Elodius waits for his people to file out of the elevator before departing.
Theseus salutes him with two fingers, in a charmingly youthful way.
When the doors close again you've recovered more of yourself, your wits.
"Where were we?" He corners you again, kissing the side of your neck.
"I'm mad at you, Theseus." You don't stop him from kissing your neck, but you grip his wrist, haltingly hard, when it starts to reach under your skirt again.
"Mm," he hums against your throat, noting the way you expose more of it, craning it for his access. "No, you're not."
With a nip of his teeth, he extracts a whine and a tremor down your legs. You imagine his hands, his beautiful big hands, coming around your throat, squeezing, applying pressure there until you go light-headed. You want to be choked by him. You want to get down on your knees in this elevator and unbuckle his belt and take him into your mouth until he's the one who is needy and whining, wanting it bad, moaning and praising you, calling you a good girl.
The elevator dings for the final time and you have to physically push him off of you. He falls back without a fight.
"Our floor," you say, trying to make your expression into something like a glare. You're not very good at resenting him.
For a moment you're not sure what he's going to do to you. It's scandalizing and rousing, the idea that he might grab you, touch you anyway. The look in his eyes is black and beyond hungry, sapped of all restraint. He gulps and clenches his jaw. Blinks at last.
Ever the gentleman.
"Of course, after you," Theseus says. He motions for you to walk ahead of him.
You stomp off to your shared office, trying pathetically to fix your skirt and your hair and any other part of you that looks disheveled.
When he comes into his office behind you and closes the door, latching the lock, he looks equally undone. Vulnerable almost. It's not only that he needs you, which he does, but that he wants to make it okay and doesn't know how.
"Y/N," he makes a vague, defenseless gesture, throwing up his arms weakly, and sighs. "I don't.... How can I make it right? How can I make it up to you?"
It's a cheerless, pitiful noise, your responding laugh.
"Don't worry, Theseus. I got your letter. And besides, I manage my hopes quite well on my own."
"I wish you wouldn't. Don't."
You scoff.
"No, it's my fault for hoping for more from you. You're asking me to, what, put my faith in the world?" You know your tone is sharper than intended, and your expression is that of a burned woman, hardened and jaded.
But he doesn't hold it against you. You try not to flinch away when he steps forward and brings a hand up to your face, to your cheek.
"No, I'm asking you to put your faith in me."
You could cry at this tenderness he's affording you.
"I just," you gently place your hand over his and lower it from your face. "I just can't believe that you don't feel anything for her. I can't shake the way I felt watching you leave me, without a second glance."
Your voice breaks on the last word. You're admitting more than you bargained for. Admitting that this is the way you've felt your entire life. The orphanage, your parents, every adult who promised to help you, to save you, and didn't. It was too familiar of a pain for it to hurt as badly as it did, being left behind.
"Leta, she... I don't know what you mean," he says, shaking his head.
“Theseus, I'm not stupid! I saw the way you went after her! The way you left me behind, it was like I ceased to exist. You obviously still have feelings for her—"
“I have feelings for you!" He raises his voice in frustration, and it startles you. "She’s the one I left behind, for you.”
You feel so worked up, so overheated. You don't want to be fighting with him, not now, not ever.
"I-I don't believe you-"
"Y/N, you are essentially calling me a liar right now. I don't know what else I can say to make you believe it, you act as if I took off with her and kissed her-"
"You didn't have to! You already have been for the last two years, Theseus!" Your hands are wavering, your bottom lip too. "I don't believe you because, if it's true what you told me, about you leaving her for me, why didn't you act in the months after?! You proposed to Leta mere months after dating, but for the months you were single you didn't try to-"
"I was your boss, Y/N! I was trying to be a good man, a good friend!" He rakes a hand through his hair roughly.
"So I'm just supposed to believe that you left your fiancée to live a life as my friend? To continue working with me like-"
“I apologize if that’s too difficult for you to believe, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s true.” His tone is brusque, almost business-like.
It's like a shot to the heart. His lack of understanding, lack of seeing.
“Too difficult for me to believe? Me?!” You’ve never raised your voice at him like this, every word is straining out of you, painfully. Any semblance of control you had is unspooling, rapidly. “Theseus, my second month here I was offered a position as an Auror, my dream job, what I’d worked so hard for at school, and I turned it down to keep being your assistant! I turned it down to keep living a life in your shadow. I thought that if I could make myself smaller for you I could-"
You can’t continue, the tears rise up in a saltwater tide in your lungs. You turn your head away, quick, so he doesn’t see your face break.
"Y/N," he says, gentle, broken. "Y/N, I'm sorry. I had no idea."
"Maybe you didn't want to know. I... I know you desire me, Theseus. I'm sorry, at one point I thought I could just sleep with you, and I wouldn't need anything more, but.... Oh, god, I'm sorry."
You rub at your eyes aggressively, even as the tears continue to fall, in a self-conscious and fruitless display.
He looks so lost, looks like he very badly wants to comfort you, to hug you, but no longer knows if he's allowed to.
"Y/N, I can recommend you for promotion, I can-"
"It's fine, Theseus. I made my decision and I've lived with it. There are no open positions right now anyway, the post was filled."
It's silent for long enough that the quiet no longer hangs there like an awful, third body between you. You regain your composure, the tears pass and give way to a hollow feeling.
"Y/N," Theseus speaks at last. He's standing across his office still, but the look in his eyes is so full of longing and yearning, he could've been across a train platform, a crowded room, a continent. "I have not been doing this right. I should've asked you to be my girlfriend a long time ago, I know. For that I am ashamed. But..."
He licks his lips and inhales sharply, trying to find the words.
"Y/N, please don't accuse me of lusting after you. What I feel for you is nothing so shallow as lust. Yes, I want to be inside you all the time, but that's because being close to you, this," he steps forward and places a cold hand against your chest demonstratively, below your neck, skin to skin, "This isn't close enough."
You look up into his seaglass eyes, your heart in tatters. Him, it's always been him.
"I miss you when I'm with you," he says. "I love you, I've told you before and I'll tell you again and again, but it's up to you to believe it, sweetheart."
When you still don't say anything, can't find the words, he looks crestfallen, closes his eyes.
"What do you want?" he asks you, opening them.
And you can't answer. To love him freely? To feel held and chosen by him? To live your dreams and relinquish your past without shame or grief or hesitation? Before you begin to say anything at all, the words building and budding at the back of your throat like a flower about to bloom, a knock sounds at the door.
Theseus closes his eyes and sighs, pained.
"Theseus-"
"I have to go," he says tersely. "I've been gone with my brother for too long. The department heads have called me in for questioning. I don't know when I'll be out."
You nod, swallowing.
He looks at your face, a look of determination settling on his.
"I promise to make it right."
----
It's past closing time and Theseus still has not returned from the depths of whatever secret, dim-lit corner of the Ministry they took him to for questioning. All day you've spent heartlessly filling out paperwork, finishing up your research assignments, stewing in anxiety.
Please, keep him safe. You think to no one in particular. Please.
You reluctantly leave the office, hoping to find him in the Atrium. You sit there glumly at the edge of the fountain, shooting periodic glances towards the elevators and the staircases, hoping to see him emerging from the Department of Mysteries, maybe, or the Courtrooms. Even the paper missives, usually magicked into airplane and bird shapes, have stopped flying overhead in the Atrium. The Ministry is emptying out, there's hardly any foot traffic at all.
You feel as though you handled everything, your insecurities and emotions, so artlessly, so recklessly in your last conversation. You are aching to make it better.
Eventually, you walk back to level two in a daze, pushing through the heavy oak door to the Aurors Offices with all the attention of a sleepwalker, your mind elsewhere.
You nearly trip on the house elf in front of the door when you stumble into Theseus's office. The elf grumbles in discontent.
House elves? Your shared office is hardly recognizable. Half-cleaned out, three Ministry house elves are busy at work, boxing and taping and scrubbing the furniture and shelves clean. Your stomach lurches.
Theseus. Where are all his things? Was he found out? Arrested?
Your voice sounds like a stranger's to your ears, so transformed by sheer panic.
"Hello, excuse me!" You say to one of the house elves. He looks over in open disdain, though you can't blame him, seeing as you almost crushed him just now. "Hi, yes, what is going on? What are you doing with Mr. Scamander's things? I'm his assistant."
"Mr. Scamander," the elf drawls, setting aside his mop bucket with a melodramatic thunk and splash. "No longer works here."
The elf tries to turn back to his work when you lunge forward and grasp him by the shoulder. He looks at your hand on him in abject shock.
"Please!" You beg, falling to your knees to better convince the house elf. "I need to know what's happened to him, it's important."
"Nothing has happened to him, miss. He turned in his letter of resignation an hour or so ago!" The elf shakes you off of him, none too gently.
He gestures rudely to the two, untouched pieces of paper laid out on the desk. Everything else has been cleared.
You snatch up the nearest page with a shaking hand, eyes racing over the words.
It's from the heads of your department, the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and it confirms what the elf told you. Theseus gave up his position and designated you as the one he desired to fill the post. The Aurorship is yours.
The letter requested that you complete a trial period of one month, as it was unheard of for a witch with no Auror experience to take up the Head Auror post. But they were amenable if the trial period went well. These were dark days, recruits were scarce and few other Aurors were jumping to fill the position. Your confirmation meeting with the department heads was to be after work, at 7pm.
It's nearly that time now.
You blink at the words on the page, astounded and a bit shell-shocked.
You're hardly thinking at all when you pick up the second letter, hands moving with an automaton, detached fluidity.
Dearest Y/N,
The questioning did not go well. I had to act quickly, darling. I was thinking only of you.
Take the Head Auror position and be safe and happy forever. Blamelessly, and knowing you are loved.
Or, meet me at King's Cross Station tonight, at 7:15pm. If you'll have me, if you love me. I'm joining the fight against Grindelwald, for good. I'm meeting my brother and the others at Hogsmeade.
I am horrified that you ever put me over your dreams, and that I gave you so little in return for it. If I could turn back time, I would've done it all differently. I would've made you mine.
My love, you couldn't answer me when I asked you what you wanted today, so I wanted to give you this choice now.
It did not make much sense for me to stay at the Ministry. They were suspicious of me from the start, war hero or not, because of my relation to Newt. You could do wonderful things, have so much more influence than I could. There were no other open Auror positions for you to take but mine, but I can give you this one part of my life, easily. God knows I'd give you the rest if you asked.
I cannot promise your safety, or your happiness, but I can promise to love you, as I do now, as I always have, no matter what you decide. My heart is yours alone. All you have to do is reach out and take it.
Yours,
Theseus
Reading the words on the page, feeling your own breath suck in and whoosh out of your lungs, hearing it, it's all so surreal.
Your heart flutters meekly, wounded at either prospect. But you want to choose yourself. Who has ever chosen you? You need to be on your own side this time.
You glance at the clock and curse. You shouldn't have spent so much time waiting in the Atrium, floating about the Ministry.
"I can't go, I won't go," you decide. "It's too late anyway."
Who knew if you'd even be able to have a real relationship with him? Even if you believed his love for you, and that he was over Leta, and somehow overcame the horrors and traumas of your life that you hadn't begun to confront... who knew if it would work? That would be its own, new, excruciating pain, having loved and it still not being enough...
"I'm staying," you think to yourself. "I am. He doesn't know what he's asking of me, he doesn't really know me at all. I'm staying. I'm taking the position."
At first you thought the words to convince yourself, reaffirm and reinforce. But they don't sound as improbable as you thought. This happiness doesn't sound too good to be true, it sounds as if it could belong to you after all.
You sigh, trembling, and begin to go through the empty drawers of Theseus's old desk, imagining your life, or trying to.
You reach for the bottommost drawer, pulling it open.
The sight of the worn little clothbound book snags your vision like a thorn. You pull it out in a trancelike state and read the title: Garden Parting by P. M. Kipling. The memory rises without you even having to reach for it, like a face in water.
-----
One Year Ago
It was only your fourth week at the office. This bloody idiot named Henry Ludgate somehow came to the insane conclusion that if he talked to you enough, or talked at you, more fittingly, you would like him back. So every one of your lunch breaks, without fail, he'd come searching for you in the Atrium to talk your ear off about nothing at all.
At the present moment, he was trying to strike up a conversation about women's shoewear, a hard topic for even far better conversationalists.
"I actually do like flat shoes, or 'flats,' are they? But I only like the ones with a bit of heel, all the other types of flats are terribly unattractive I think."
You were dimly aware of your boss, Theseus Scamander, watching this all unfold with a lackadaisical amusement. He was leaning against a newsstand of The Daily Prophet pretending to read it, but really you knew his sly smile at the front page was for you.
"So, not flats?"
"Sorry?" Henry always jumped at the excuse of poor hearing to lean uncomfortably close to you.
You rolled your eyes, not caring if Henry saw or not.
"If the flats you say you like have heels, doesn't that make them not 'flat shoes'?" You asked curtly.
Henry stared at you dumbly. "Oh, right. So it's 'heels' I like then."
You flicked your gaze up to his, irritably.
"So how many pairs do you own, then?"
You thought you saw a rustle of paper in the corner of your vision--undoubtedly Theseus was choking back some fit of laughter.
Henry attempted to clear his throat but only seemed to choke, rubbing a half-fist on his chest touchily.
"What?! Pardon me, not for myself!" He was veritably red in the face, not pink or any subtle, healthy flush, but bright red. "I-I meant I like heels on women, on you."
You could barely tamp down your frustration. This was supposed to be a restful lunch break, a good hour of no-work, and yet you seemed to enjoy your actual work more than this (for many reasons, the first reason beginning with the letter T and the last reason being the way the first reason smiled at you whenever you said something bright, or funny, or kind. He had a smile like light cracking open the sky at dawn, it so completely transformed the rest of his face, always reaching his eyes).
"Henry," you sighed, indulgently, maybe a bit patronizingly. "As much as I am grateful for your... fashion tips, and your riveting conversation, I really do prefer to read on my lunch breaks. I'll have to excuse myself."
You turned on your heel before he could protest, finding another secluded corner of the Atrium by the fountain. You pulled out the book, Garden Parting, as more of a prop, or a shield, or a comfort object, like a teddy bear. You had no intention of reading it right now. Not when...
Just as you suspected. You saw the shadow come over your shoulder, the shape of his figure, his hands in his pockets. Even that, his outline or shadow, stirred up some feeling you couldn't name in your chest, in the cavity there, next to your heart.
"Mr. Scamander," you sighed. "I really don't understand what sort of sadistic pleasure you gain from watching Ludgate torture me with mind-numbingly boring conversation."
You said this without turning, already smiling. Theseus sat down beside you, gingerly, beaming.
"It's entertaining," he said. The deep rumble of his voice was pleasant. "The way you eviscerate him. It's my favorite part."
There was something so attractive about the tilt of his eyes, hooded, and the curl of his hair, a strand falling loose over his forehead. He brought his bottom lip under his teeth, bit down and squinted at you.
"Do you really prefer to read on your breaks, Y/N?"
You scoffed, mock-offended.
"Yes! Do you really read The Daily Prophet on yours?"
"No, not at all," he admitted, shamelessly and with a boyish smile. "What are you reading?"
You suddenly felt self-conscious. You almost didn't want to show him. Your book was soft and worn, the cloth corners frayed, the text on the front half chipped off.
Against your instinct and your nature, you found yourself reluctantly handing him the book. Your mortification increased tenfold when he didn't take it from your extended hand, he only stared at it unreadably.
"What-" you began.
"Wait," Theseus turned to his suitcase, set it down on the tiled floor beside the fountain and clicked open the latches. "Garden Parting by P.M. Kipling, right?"
He was speaking so excitedly, shuffling around in his suitcase.
'No way,' you thought, and then, because you couldn't help it:
"Oh, you're kidding," you gasped. "No, Theseus! You're kidding. I swore I was the only person in London with a copy."
Theseus pulled it out at last, victorious. A sleek hardcover, newer than yours, but creased from frequent reading.
"Oh, Theseus!" You brought your hands up to your mouth. You were always worried your emotions, especially excitement, would make it harder to be taken seriously at work. You endeavored to dampen and mute them, but you could not hide your girlish elation at this inexplicable commonality between the two of you.
He smiled at your reaction, a slow, warm smile.
"Who knew you had a secret affinity for muggle literature?" You tried to make your tone teasing and demeaning but couldn't commit to it, you were too surprised by the force of your own joy.
"My roommate at Hogwarts was muggleborn. He gave it to me."
"You carry it with you too?" You asked, still in disbelief.
"Everywhere!" It was a breathy admission, half a laugh, earnest. "I like to reread certain parts. It doesn't get old." He was smiling so big it was almost heart-wrenching, you did not think he had ever looked at you like that, eyes blazing with naked enthusiasm. Looking at you like you were holding some key, to what you didn't know.
"No one seems to know about it," he continued with a shrug. "I've been waiting for someone to talk with about this book since I was sixteen."
"Oh," you kept saying. You wondered if he thought you sounded stupid for it, or if he thought it was endearing. "There's this one part I think about almost every day. In the purple glass house, with the broken arm used to-"
"-To praise God and 'be done with it'?" He finished for you.
Then miraculously, he flipped his copy open, paper fluttering, to a sole, underlined paragraph. The very same.
"It's like we're speaking the same language," He whispered with an incredulous laugh, but his eyes were reverent.
You flashed him a smile, one that was glowing and real. You were holding his copy of the book between you now, like children with a shared toy, or like lovers reading a roadmap.
"What language? English?" You asked sarcastically, making a funny face.
But you had known what Theseus meant. What wavelength of sense that you two, alone, could access. How the world spoke to you both in the same ways, through the same channels of meaning.
Garden Parting was the only object you had from your deceased parents, the only thing that survived your childhood. It was a children's chapter book that your father used to read to you, quite a grim piece of magical realism about a lot of things, but mostly about a girl condemned to go back to her burning house and stay there, inside, until the flames went out. There's no question that it will be swallowed whole, that she will burn to death in the place she was born.
When Theseus spoke again his eyes were shining, perceptively.
"Is that you then?" His voice was subdued, made gentle, intentionally. His eyes looked strangely dark inside the black stone interior of the Ministry, blue like river slate, dim like rain. "The main character, that's you?"
It was the most you'd ever revealed. It was a single, quiet word.
"Yes," you said.
Theseus placed a hand on your forearm. You didn't dare move, react, for fear he would stop touching you. A bird on your windowsill.
"I'll be the great owl then," he said. "The one that takes her away at the end.... Or Reggie, the one that's her friend. Whatever you want."
You laughed, bleakly. You felt pressured to speak, nonsense, anything to cover up how much his words meant to you.
"Really," you said. "It's my favorite book, but sometimes I can hardly get through it, there's so much pain in her life. I get so anxious..."
"Here," Theseus plucked a ribbon from his suitcase and flipped open your copy of the book. He placed the ribbon strategically towards the back, surgically almost, his long fingers lining it up with the interior spine, right in the scene where the owl takes the girl away and there's happiness set aside for her in life, after all.
"I'll mark it with this," he said. Neither of you were looking at each other anymore, the moment was too intimate to bear. But you were both thinking of each other, talking to each other. "So you can remember how it ends."
-----
The memory of that day by the fountain is so unexpected that it is the first time you're remembering it at all.
'Maybe he does know me after all, does see me.'
The thought is a shattering one.
'Oh, god.'
You check the time. It's 6:50pm. You pull on your coat and snatch your purse off the desk. If you leave now, right now, you can intercept him.
Theseus has to know you're coming. Even if you don't make it onto the train, he has to see your face on the platform, through the window, even. He has to know that you're choosing him.
You apparate as far as you're able and begin to run towards the station the rest of the way.
You're coming for him, each pounding step you're coming, heart soaring, this is that freeing love that grows and grows and stretches out into space like air. And you're going to tell him everything, every wish and every nightmare, you're going to--
A hand shoots out and pulls you backward by the neck. The grip is so hard that you taste blood, everywhere, in your mouth.
You yelp but the sound is lost as you are torn through the air, choking through space. Being forcibly apparated always feels like choking, like being pushed down a flight of stairs repeatedly. You can't catch your breath or your footing, you don't know where you're being taken.
Dark material whooshes and cuts around you. You hardly feel a thing.
Could someone at the Ministry have seen the letters left on your desk? Read them? Were you and Theseus positively identified at the gala in Berlin, or maybe outside the mausoleum? Before you've even arrived at your captor's destination, your mind whirls helplessly, to Grindelwald, to the situation at hand, and then, finally, to Theseus, who is waiting at Platform 9 3/4 for a girl who will never arrive, for a girl he will assume is telling him "no."
It happened so fast you didn't even have the time to turn around, to touch your wand. You were apparated away, stolen into thin air, before you could even set foot inside the station.

Summary: Y/N and Newt have been friends for a long time, and for almost as long, Y/N has also had a crush on Newt's older brother Theseus. Years and years later, after their Hogwarts days, several run-ins with Grindelwald, the death of Leta Lestrange, and the wedding of Queenie and Jacob, Newt is still subverting Ministry rules in the name of helping his creatures. And, as usual, Y/N is an accomplice in his schemes. So, when Newt goes running out the door with his creatures and Jacob in tow, it falls to Y/N to distract Theseus and keep him from following Newt's trail. And this distraction might just lead to a bigger change than any of them bargained for.

Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"What do we do?"
"I don't know!"
I looked between Newt and Jacob as they debated, coming off as a little bit more than panicked. They needed to get out of here with Newt's briefcase, without getting held up by the Ministry of Magic. Unfortunately for both of them (and me), Theseus was on his way here as we spoke, and there was no doubt he'd slow down the boys' mission.
"Why is your brother coming after us in the first place?" demanded Jacob.
"Because technically, what we're doing here is illegal. The Ministry of Magic has specific procedures they want me to follow before releasing any of my creatures into their natural habitats, but this time, waiting for their bureaucracy to process things will take too long. My newest rescue won't do well waiting around in captivity for longer than they already have," answered Newt. Jacob looked more stressed than he'd been before.
"Oh great!"
"You two get out of here," I said, jumping into the middle of their argument after watching their back-and-forth for a while. "I'll stay here and slow down Theseus."
They both stopped what they were doing and turned to stare at me, incredulous expressions on their faces. After a few beats of silence, the three of us just looking between one another, Newt spoke up.
"Y/N, are you sure?"
"Yeah, Newt, I'm sure. I can distract him just fine, and you guys need to get out of here. You need Jacob for this a little more than you need me, and I can always meet up with you both later."
Newt stared at me for a few moments, then closed all the distance between us to clasp a hand on my shoulder. He met my eyes with an earnest look, and it made my heart warm to see my best friend like that.
"Thank you, Y/N."
"Of course. Just be safe, the both of you."
Newt nodded, his way of promising, before heading out the door, Jacob with him. I watched them go, and then just like that, I was alone in our little loft hideout.
I'd been best friends with Newt for the majority of my life. Since Hogwarts, in fact. He and I got along like wildfire, and had since our first year together at Hogwarts. I would do anything for him. Theseus and I, on the other hand, were a different story.
I'd had a crush on my best friend's older brother for basically our entire time at Hogwarts. Theseus, on the other hand, had barely noticed me beyond my role as his kid brother's friend, and our relationship had only cooled as I'd spent more time helping Newt and less time fawning over him. In the wake of Leta Lestrange's death, however, Newt and Theseus had gotten close again, and I'd done my best to be there for both of them as well. Theseus and I had gotten to the point of actually being able to call each other friends recently, and I only hoped my decision to distract him today in order to give Newt a clean getaway wouldn't ruin that new step in our relationship.
Oh well. Sometimes, there was no other option but to back your crazy best friend's crazy play, no matter the cost.
I paced around the room for a few minutes, trying to brace myself to see Theseus, but before I was anywhere near ready I heard a loud knock at the door. I couldn't help jumping, but then I did my best to quickly compose myself and went to answer it.
"Theseus!" I said, feigning surprise when I saw the serious face of the Auror before me. He kept trying to lean around me to see inside the little apartment Newt and I had turned into a temporary hideout, and I kept leaning to block him. "What a surprise! It's so good to see you, it's been so long!"
"Y/N, where's my brother?" he demanded, his eyes at last settling on me instead of the space behind me. I fought back a gulp as I forced a smile onto my face instead.
"Newt? Uh... I haven't seen Newt in a while now, actually. I thought he was spending some family time with you?"
Theseus gave me a look that clearly said he wasn't buying any of my nonsense.
"We both know he's not spending time with me. He's been hiding out with you while planning some nonsensical scheme that's going to get both him and his muggle friend into deep trouble. Now tell me where he is."
"What? I mean, uh..."
"Y/N, I'm sorry, but I don't have time for this."
With that, he stepped forward, forcing me to step back or else be run straight into. He pushed into the living room, leaving me standing by the open door behind him, then poked his head into the kitchen in search of Newt.
"Newt! Come out, we need to talk!" he called. He stopped, apparently deciding Newt wasn't in the kitchen, before heading into the living room. I rolled my eyes and closed the front door.
"Please, come right in and make yourself comfortable," I deadpanned. Theseus just shot me a look over his shoulder as he continued to move around my living room. I huffed a sigh, but got dragged back into action as Theseus made his way across the room, getting closer to the back door Newt and Jacob had disappeared out of. If he got there, to the spot they'd left from, odds were significantly higher he'd be able to track them down, especially with a little magical help.
I just needed to buy Newt a little more time. He and Jacob were catching a portkey in twenty minutes, and if Theseus couldn't get to them before that, they'd be in the clear.
"So, uh, the Ministry is still trying to prevent the release of some animals, yeah? That's uh... that's what this whole thing is about?"
"My brother is trying to release dangerous animals into the wild," said Theseus, not halting his search through my living room. I took a few steps closer to him as they spoke. "Keeping them safe in his sanctuary is one thing, but turning them loose on the world is another..."
"I've met all of those animals, none of them seem particularly dangerous to me," I countered, crossing the room all the way to Theseus now. I moved in front of him, standing between him and his search of the top of my fireplace mantle. His eyes landed on me, an exasperated expression on his face.
"Y/N, please. Newt just needs to get a permit, and go through the proper channels. Then he can release whatever animals he wants."
I couldn't help rolling my eyes. "Oh please, you and I both know the Ministry will take ages. Some of those animals will be much better off if they're released now, and not a year from now."
"All the same, I need to do my job and get my brother back. Then maybe I can help him get his permit expedited, but until then, he has to wait. So, if you're done attempting to stall me..."
With that, he turned to start hunting through the rest of my living room, following Newt's trail. I moved after him, hovering over his every step and trying to erase any trace of Newt when I caught it before Theseus.
"Actually, I'm not done stalling you. I think we should talk a little more. Now that we're back to being friendly, you know, I think-"
"Nice try, Y/N, but it's not going to work," said Theseus, a slight smile on his face as he continued to make his way through my living room. "I can talk to you and search for my brother at the same time."
I looked around the room for some sign of inspiration to slow down Theseus, but started to panic as he headed for the door Newt and Jacob had left through. He flung it open and was about to walk out, which meant I had to do something, now.
"Wait!" I cried, rushing across the room towards him. He paused with a sigh and turned back to me, wand in-hand and ready to track Newt and Jacob.
"Y/N, I'm sorry, but I really can't stick around right now. I have a job to do."
"Okay, but just one second. This is important!" I said, slipping into the doorway between him and his target. He leaned forward and into my space, and I couldn't help feeling a little giddy at his proximity. I blame that feeling for clouding my judgment and impacting my next decision.
"What is it, Y/N?" he asked. I panicked, trying to think of something, but I couldn't focus on anything beyond the handsome, wonderful man in front of me and the fact that I could NOT let him through the door. He sighed and took a half step forward, placing his hand gently on my waist to move me aside, and I did the only thing that came to mind.
I grabbed Theseus' shoulders, leaned up, and kissed him full on the mouth.
My brain short circuited all over again as we kissed, and I swear fireworks surrounded us. Then, a moment later, reality set in. I jerked away from Theseus and my hand flew to my mouth, horror sinking in at my actions. I couldn't believe I'd just done that.
"Theseus..." I looked up at him to find him staring blankly off into the space just over my shoulder, looking completely shocked. "Oh my God... I am so, SO sorry!"
Theseus didn't respond, which got rid of any of the remaining fireworks lingering around me. I couldn't believe I'd just done that. Theseus and I had just started to get to a place where we had a good relationship, and I'd probably just destroyed it.
"Theseus, please, I'm so sorry. I know I shouldn't have done that. I just... I needed to keep you from going after Newt, and... and it was the only thing I could think to do. Oh God." I facepalmed. Then, against the rational part of my brain screaming to let me give it control again, I kept talking. "I- well, I've had a crush on you since we were kids, and we were standing so close together and it's like my mind went blank, and it was the only thing I could think of-"
My ramble finally, mercifully got cut off as Theseus wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me back to his side of the doorway before pushing me up against the wall right next to it. Before I could get my brain restarted, he was kissing me, with a level of passion and emotion that I'd only ever dreamed about.
Once I got over my own shock, I wasted no time kissing him back. I tangled my hands in his hair as his grip tightened around my waist, and we stayed like that for a long few moments before finally coming up for air.
We were breathing hard as we met each others' eyes, our faces barley an inch apart. He seemed as shocked as me that we'd actually just done that, and I couldn't help the joyful laugh that bubbled out of me.
"Theseus... what was that?" I asked, a smile steadily growing on my face as I fondly ran my hand through his hair again. He smiled back at me, a slightly sheepish grin on his face even though he looked just as happy as I did.
"I've had feelings for you for a few months now," he breathed. "I didn't know how to tell you, since we'd just gotten back on friendly terms and I didn't want to ruin anything..."
"I've been doing the same thing," I said. We shared disbelieving laughs, and I surveyed Theseus fondly while he looked me up and down with the same care. Theseus leaned in and rested his forehead against mine, the smile still on his face and his voice still a little breathless when he spoke.
"So... I kind of need to go chase my brother now, but... any chance you'd let me take you to dinner tomorrow night?"
I beamed back at him, leaning up to give him a light, soft kiss before responding.
"I'd love that, Theseus."
"Good! Great. Then... it's a date."
"It's a date."
We shared another smile, Theseus still looking a little giddy as he at last stepped away from me and moved towards the door again. The sweet smile turned into more of a smirk as he took one step outside, on his way to follow the path his brother had taken not long ago.
"So... you're not going to try to stop me going after Newt anymore?" he asked, a little of the confident swagger I loved so much back in his tone and body language.
"No," I said with a shrug. "He's gotten far enough away by now that you can't catch him."
Theseus groaned and looked up at the sky, then settled his gaze back on me.
"I hope you're wrong, Y/N. But if you're not... you're buying the first round of drinks as compensation."
"You're on," I replied with a grin of my own. "Have fun on your wild goose chase! Don't let the Ministry people get you down. Newt's doing the right thing."
Theseus just sighed, although he wasn't quite able to keep a fond smile off his face. Whether it was for me, his brother, or the both of us, I wasn't sure.
He gave me one last smile and nod before finally heading all the way out the door, shutting it behind him as he resumed his work. I smiled after him and slowly sank down the wall, my fingers brushing over my lips where Theseus' had just been. It didn't seem quite real to me that the past few minutes had really happened, but I knew for a fact it was real. And that I had a date with Theseus Scamander tomorrow night.
Newt was never going to believe me when I told him the story. Helping him with his crazy shenanigans had never turned out so well.

✭・. IF ONLY YOU WERE MINE.
Theseus Scamander x reader
Summary : Theseus doesn't really like you and his brother being close. he doesn't want to admit it, but he's jealous of your bond. so rather than confessing his feelings to you, he decides to make you pay for it.
Warnings : jealousy, language, some angst but fluff at the end.
Tumblr media
"i beg you y/n, come with me to this dinner."
the girl growled. "newt, you're a big boy, i think you can handle a family dinner."
"no no no, you don't understand, you're the only person who understands my passion, my family has no interest in it. please."
again she growled in frustration."okay, but please get out of my office before your brother comes here for lunch, I don't want him to get the wrong idea."
newt smiled shyly. "because you don't want him to think that something is going on between us, so you will still have every chance with him."
“i think I will reconsider my decision.”
"okay, okay, i'm leaving, see you tonight."
.
ten minutes later there was a knock on the door of Y/n's office.
"come in."
"hello darling."
you couldn't help but feel your cheeks turning red. "hello thésé, please sit down, i'll finish my file and i'm yours."
théséus let his eyes slide along your body, the dress you wore was slightly open at the front, leaving the top of your breasts visible, he licked his lower lip while thinking "if only you were mine".
"so i saw my brother coming out of your office, what did he wanted ?"
he didn't want to ask in a harsh way, but his jealousy got the better of him.
you frowned, clearly surprised by his tone. "he invited me to your family dinner tonight and-"
"why did he invited you ?" once again, his jealousy prevailed.
"excuse me ? he asked me to accompany him as a friend."
theseus sneered "newt has no friends."
again, he didn't mean to be mean but his emotions controlled him in the moment.
"what's got into you ? you're talking about your brother, he's an exceptional person with a big heart and—"
"are you sleeping with him ?"
"what the — get out of my office ! "
theseus clutched the stitch to contain himself. "very well." then without the slightest glance for you, he left the room.
.
the day passed slowly and with difficulty, you couldn't help thinking about these’s behavior. why did he say those horrible things ? one thing is certain, you were not going to stop there, and tonight, you will hold him to account.
unfortunately, what you didn't know was that by not answering these’s last question, he had to draw a conclusion, newt and you were together. that's why a few hours after your argument, he went to find leta and asked her to accompany him to the family dinner. one thing was sure, an emotional evening was waiting for you.
.
It was 7 p.m. sharp when newt rang your doorbell. when you opened the door to him, he greeted you with his usual shy smile and a rose.
"good evening y/n you are resplendent."
"thank you, you are very elegant too."
and with that, he offered you his arm which you accepted and side by side you set off for the family home.
.
"y/n my dear, how happy i am to see you !" mrs. scamander greeted you with a warm hug.
"it's a pleasure to see you too."
once newt's parents greeted you, you walked into the dining room where the dinner was being held, and stopped in your tracks when you saw theseus sitting next to leta. what was she doing here ? were they together ? newt, who had just seen them, turned to you to analyze your reaction, he was worried about you, but you gave him a reassuring smile and decided to sit down in front of leta, you didn't want to meet these’s gaze.
"hello leta."
"good evening y/n i'm glad to see you." it was obvious that she did not know what she was doing here. never before had she been invited to the scamanders, but when theseus had asked her, she had not been able to say no to her friend, exactly as you.
the hosts of the evening settled down and the meal began. what a fucking night you thought.
the longer the evening passed, the more you wanted to run away. between the inappropriate comments of newt's uncle, the fact that his parents are hardly interested in him and the looks that theses gave you, you didn't know where to stand.
"we are so proud of you theseus, you have a great career."
you looked at newt who lowered his head, a feeling of sadness invaded you as well as anger towards his parents. mr and mrs scamander were lovely, but for them, newt's job wasn't good enough. you then took his hand and squeezed it lightly to comfort him. seen from the outside, this gesture meant nothing more than friendship, but for these it was a declaration of war. how could his little brother, the person to whom he confided his feelings for you, do such a thing to him ? and how could you, the woman he's loved for years let him down. he then did the only thing that could make you react, he turned to leta, took her face in his hands and kissed her.
your world stopped spinning for a split second, but for you it felt like it had gone on for hours, the man you had been in love with since your first year at hogwarts was standing in front of you, kissing one other, the worst was that once the kiss was over, a kiss that leta did not return, théseus turned to you and smirked at you. a silence fell over the room, a dead silence that suffocated you. you felt the tears welling up, so you cleared your throat and said "please excuse me, but i need to get some fresh air."
.
once outside, and once assured that no one could hear you, you let the tears come out. it's was as if someone had stuck a dagger in your heart, your head was spinning, your heart was beating hard, you tried to comfort yourself as much as you could by embracing yourself with your arms, but your body kept convulsing with every tear that came out.
"y/n."
you wiped away the last tears with the back of your hand and turned to the person who had just entered the garden.
"leta, congratulations, i'm sure you'll be happy with–"
"i don't like him, at least not like that, he's my friend, that's why I agreed to come here, but that's all. i want you to know that i'm sorry. but i think he loves you and that's why—"
"leta, please stop. he doesn't love me. a person who's supposed to love you doesn't hurt you like that. i love him, i’ve been in love with him for years, but from what i've seen, it's not reciprocated."
the brunette approached you and hugged you.
"i know how dumb he is sometimes, but believe me when i tell you he loves you, that's why he acts so stupid."
"but he hurt me leta, it hurts so much."
"i know, but try to talk to him."
"not tonight, all i want is to go back to bed."
she nodded and went to get newt to bring you home. back home and after newt told you a thousand times how sorry he was and how he was going to kill his brother as soon as he sees him, you washed and got into bed, you fell asleep after crying for a few more hours.
the day at work tomorrow will be complicated.
.
the next day you woke up with a headache, probably due to the fact that you cried most of the night and during your sleep. it took you a while to get up, a time during which you decided whether to go to work or run away. but you weren't a coward and it was out of the question for theseus to ruin your work.
once your breakfast swallow and change you set off.
when you arrived at the office, a small box was placed on top of the desk, as well as a letter.
"y/n here is a box of your favorite chocolates, if some are missing it's probably because of teddy. with all my sympathy. "
— newt.
you laughed lightly and got to work. you were immersed in your work when there was a knock on the door.
"come in."
"y/n..."
you lifted your head sharply recognizing the voice.
"what are you doing here theseus ?"
the fact that you used his full name hurt him because he knew how much he had hurt you and that it would be difficult to get you back.
"can we talk ?"
"no, now, please get out of my office, i have a lot of work and—"
"i was jealous."
"what ?"
"i was, no, i still am. i’m still jealous, i don't know how long you and newt have been together but—"
you growled when you got up, exasperate. "newt and i are just friends, how many times do i have to tell you ? plus he's in love with tina, and. arghh. why am i justifying myself to you ! i don't even know why i'm talking to you, you hurt me last night theseus, and you want to know why ?" that's it, the machine was launched, everything you held back from telling him was about to come out. "because i’ve been in love with you since our first year at hogwarts, and for all those years my love for you has only grown. a love that hurt me every time you talked about another woman, every time you looked at another. but last night, last night this love made me suffer like never before, and i'm tired, tired of waiting for you to finally deign to see me, when i know very well that you will never see me. on this, excuse me but i have files to return."
it was a pretext, but you couldn't wait for him to answer you. as you hurried through the main hall, these ran after you, calling out to you. "y/n." no. "y/n stop." no. "Y/N Y/L/N STOP IMMEDIATELY, IT'S AN ORDER. "
for the first time, theseus scamander had yelled at you, right in the middle of the hallway, a hallway full of colleagues who had stopped and watched you.
"don't. give. me. ord–"
"shut up and listen to me. i love you, i love you more than anything. i've loved you since the first day i saw you in the third cabin of the hogwarts express. i kept on loving you more and more every day. the women i've dated were there to get you out of my head, but despite that you haunt my thoughts, do you have any idea what you're doing to me ? i could die for you, and i'm sorry that i hurt you, i could never forgive myself, but damn it, having you by my side and not being able to call you mine is the hardest thing to live."
for the second time in two days, your world stopped, but this time, the man you love had just opened his heart to you and in front of everyone, you knew what you had to do.
you took a safe step towards him, took him by his jacket and kissed him like you had always wanted to. he didn't have to be asked to return your kiss, his hands were wandering all over you, and when you ran out of air you stopped and whispered to him.
"i love you." he smiled at you and ran his thumb over your lips. "i love you even more."
then to the cheers of your colleagues, you kissed each other a second time.

thinking about Theseus ships after Leta and idk where to go…like charging up Theseus x Lally? committing to Theseus x Percival? single Theseus who just does whatever?
I wish there was another woman in the main cast besides Tina because I feel like a Theseus x Lally and Percival x Someone lavender marriage situation would be so fun
okay edit: I forgot about Bunty but even though Lally x Bunty might work, platonic Percival x Bunty definitely wouldn’t 😭
