Summary: Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork. He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time? Wei Ying did not stir as he knelt down by the desk. It had been so long since Lan Zhan had seen those beloved features and even longer since he’d been allowed to either get or stay this close to Wei Ying. He looked so different from Lan Zhan’s memories; apple cheeked, clean, and relaxed. Lan Zhan clamped both hands over his own mouth to stop the pained noise that threatened to escape him. Hot tears spilled down his face as he watched the young, safe, and whole boy sleep. His stomach cramped with the effort of holding the sound in, but he’d sooner die than wake Wei Ying up.

Mojo's comments: I was interrupted so many times while reading this that it took 3 days and I cannot do it justice. I did tags, though! Anyway, it's a delightful time travel fix it, wherein lwj dies and opens his eyes to his student days. Slowly, he determines that a handful of other people came back, too, all of whom died before him. He and wwx team up, try to tweak events, get together (lwj died during the 13 years, so there was no established relationship). Meanwhile, there's a mastermind somewhere, pulling strings, putting everyone in their places (meng yao shows up as a student and gets a new arc, focused on lxc of course). Great thoughts on musical cultivation, yin iron and resentful energy. (Also, Madam Yu and Meng Yao get to do a bitch-off, which is very satisfying.)

Hi Anon! You're so sweet, I just had to give you some answers!

Because I am a fickle person about faves, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some of the ones that I return to over and over again. Some of these will have either characters or relationships that people may not care for so much, but you asked for my favorites so I will still share openly.

Falling to the Rhythm by Selenay just makes me really happy, it's a Strictly Come Dancing au where Wangxian are paired together and fall in love over the course of the shows. Features some light Yunmeng siblings and JC being a grumpy brother, but I rarely find that annoying in modern aus where he's not in the same positions he is in canon and the dances and ways they fall in love make me so happy. Also perhaps an unfairly tagged oblivious WWX, he's no worse than genuine canon CQL WWX who doesn't have reasons to make connections sooner than he does.

Preparing the Soil by Rynne is one of my all time favorites, where Lan Wangji creates a space for his husband in the Cloud Recesses and the effects of the Lan Qiren forbidding the juniors from talking to Wei Wuxian rule are dealt with. Lovely and warm and full of how much Lan Wangji loves Wei Wuxian and how much Lan Wangji himself is loved, it makes me smile and is one of my comfort reads.

Sunny Horizons by Justdoityoufucker (now orphaned) A really sweet fic that a former friend wrote for me containing happy Wangxian and a hearing disabled Wei Wuxian. While sadly our friendship seems to be over for good, this fic still makes me really happy and reminds me of the good times.

Wei Wuxian's Birthday Oneshots by origami79 is one of my favorites for just being a very cute collection of somewhat interwoven fics and a couple of art pieces all about celebrating Wei Wuxian! While the author hasn't returned to it yet, it's a reread for whenever I want a reminder that Wei Wuxian is also really loved.

Catching Your Reflection Passing By by Suspicious Popsicle is a very sweet story about soulmates in a very different way from how I've seen it any other time! Containing a Lan Wangji who has grown up seeing Wei Wuxian in shared reflections and a Wei Wuxian who can sometimes open doors and see Lan Wangji in doorways, it was really sweet and warm. Contains the same Yunmeng siblings/modern au disclaimer as Falling to the Rhythm.

The This River Runs To You series by sundiscus. My first Dragonji and also a case fic/modern cultivation that scratches the right itches. A smart Wei Wuxian and happy ending. Same Yunmeng siblings/modern au disclaimer.

glitteringmoonlight in general. She has a lovely array of works for all moods and all of them celebrate my favorite characters very well.

A Feast for the Eyes by Lareine. This one is just fun; both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji run youtube cooking channels and A-Qing absolutely geeks out over getting to watch the two of them together. Only has two chapters, but what two we get are just a lot of fun and I really enjoy the free silliness of the story.

Grandmaster of Cultivation: Walkthrough and Guide by athylia

A very fun take on a fic where it's a guide to getting (or not) the secret route for the video game bachelor Lan Wangji in Modaozushi the video game!

notes on a scene by wishingswell. Another dance au where Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are ballet dancers. Soft modern au, but the focus is really on Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.

Both parts of constellations by northofallmusic. A story set during the Sunshot Campaign where Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have to hide in a cursed tomb from Wen soldiers and it changes things just a little bit.

fish & wild geese by impossibletruths. Modern farm au where Lan Wangji returns from the big city to his childhood home and works through the grief of losing his mother and reconnecting with Wei Wuxian who lives on his grandmother's farm.

the place where you are by BlackWiresOnHerHead. A space travel au where Lan Wangji is a scientist on a mission to catalogue data of a supernova and Wei Wuxian is the mechanic of the ship that will take them through this solar system before it explodes. Has one chapter with a higher concentration of Jiang Cheng than I'd like, but otherwise I find the fic really enjoyable and the very sciency space ship traveling feeling something not easily done nor replicated.

Unavoidable by diamondbruise. Lan Wangji does not know who this Wei Wuxian is, but Wei Wuxian is in the Cloud Recesses to break a curse on his beloved. Lan Wangji can't shake the feeling that something is wrong about the whole situation. A curse fic that doesn't make me cringe or wince at the Wangxian and has the really adorable part where if Lan Wangji forgot he loved Wei Wuxian the first time, he'd just fall again.

Themes and Variations in F# Major by defractum (nyargles) this time it's a Wangxian are musicians au! Lan Wangji is a professional violin and pianist, Wei Wuxian a flute prodigy. While they traveled in similar circles since they were young, this is the story of when they finally connect. Contains some Jiang stuff I usually ignore as I'm not in it for the Jiangs, I'm in it for the Wangxian.

make this chaos count by devotedbones. Wei Wuxian gets to clock a guy in the jaw with his flute. Also contains one of my all time favorite lines "They had one foot in childhood and the other in the grave" describing the young men who went into the Sunshot Campaign. Fully CQL characterization.

CSI: Gusu Edition by Stratisfyre. I'm a sucker for fics where cultivation is blended with other more real world stuff and Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian being basically forensic scientists with cultivation is a really lovely blend. Contains some good uncle Lan Qiren and more CQL level characterization, but I still enjoy it more than a year later.

Future Cultivation AU by Aki_No_Hikari. A modern cultivators in college au in a world where Mo Xuanyu did not sacrifice himself to revive Wei Wuxian, but Wangxian's reincarnations met again in the future anyway. I love all the world building and thought put into it. The fifth installment is a particular favorite.

vinegar jug by dandelion-san. Future Lan Wangji arrives in Cloud Recesses Lectures and decides to entertain himself while waiting to go home by indulging all of little Wei Wuxian's whims easily. Little Lan Wangji tries and fails to not completely die of jealousy. Hilarious and the right tone for the situation.

Four Parts Honey and One Part Vinegar by masked. The juniors try to determine why Wei Wuxian never gets jealous when people are fawning over or trying to seduce his husband. In the end, the answer is very simple.

花无百日红; the flower that withers by yiqie. Sort of a time travel fic and sort of not. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji encounter an invention that sends them tumbling back through their memories, unable to change anything but revisiting their pasts through fresh eyes, forgiving themselves for the things they did to survive.

and so my heart beats wildly by lily_winterwood. Modern cultivation au where cultivation is now an olympic sport! A bit more heavy on the misunderstanding level than I usually like, but they're teenagers for most of it so it fits more here, and they solve it pretty quickly once they get the hang of actually talking instead of walking on each other's hearts by mistake. Also contains yunmeng bros and kind of sad JC, but in a way that I really don't find that annoying.

shadows in the sun rise by Yuu_chi. Another Lan Wangji is cursed fic, but this one is absolutely about the highlights of how well Wangxian understand each other. As Lan Wangji's senses are locked to him, they are able to continue communicating almost the whole way through until the curse is broken, a very lovely difference from the way a lot of these curse fics go.

grow by Cafecliche. Wei Wuxian is temporarily cursed to be a small child. The juniors take good care of him.

moonlight caught in mutton fat by Raitalzen. This time it's a Twin Jades get cursed fic and Wei Wuxian and Lan Qiren team up to break the curse before it kills them for good. Seems to be following entirely CQL characterization so normal feelings about good uncle LQR are rendered irrelevant and also contains one of my favorite violently murderous Wei Wuxian because someone tried to kill his husband tropes.

The Guests of Cloud Recesses by cafecliche. There's a ghost in the Cloud Recesses and Wei Wuxian is uniquely qualified to deal with its problems.

Turnabout by miixz. A new favorite that I accidentally missed cause I started on page 2 of my bookmarks. Lan Wangji unexpectedly travels back in time and through his knowledge of what will come, changes the world for the better.

Tread Lightly on my Ground by AshayaT'Reldai. A rarepair fic of Lan Xichen and Qin Su! Before she can marry Jin Guangyao, Qin Su is assaulted by Jin Guangshan and runs off to Gusu in hopes that Lan Xichen will protect her and her unborn child from the Jin. Warnings should be taken into account.

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree - cozy fantasy in a D&D-style fantasy setting - loved it

The Red Thread, vol 1-2 by Lazy Sheep - Loved it, although I found it surprising how closely it follows the drama, down to locations, some character looks (Sorn's bad wig looks way better drawn manga style lol), etc. The Win/Team storyline was left out, presumably because of space constraints. Or maybe another series is planned for them later? I also couldn't find any release information for more volumes, so hopefully the series will be finished eventually. I was already considering a rewatch of Until We Meet Again this year, but now I definitely will.

Argylle - Saw the movie in a theater on a date and we enjoyed ourselves a lot. It's completely ridiculous in some ways and highly relatable in others.

Destiny Seeker {finished: 3 stars} - Finished the rest of the series this week. It got off to a rough start, but overall it was much better than I expected. The last episode was a highlight. We got the angst of a separation but were rewarded by the reunion. And then an epilogue with a surprise baby! I loved it.

For Him {finished: 3 stars} - Very disappointed with the direction this show took in the last half. They started out so strong and then *poof* everything was different and too easily resolved, with two episodes left. It's ripe for canon divergence fanfic. The three stars are for: the leads' chemistry (hot like burning), positive therapy portrayal, and the twin thing.

Marry My Husband - I'm only a couple episodes in but I already love whatever is going on with this version of time travel. I'm glad it's almost done airing because I have a feeling when I get back to it I'm going to end up binging it.

Teen and Up Time Travel AU 7 Chapters 66K words

He let himself lean back against the guest house, wondering if he could find some way to engineer an opportunity for them to play together, when ‘Wild Geese’ ended and Wei Ying began to play a song he shouldn’t, could not have known.

The longing notes of ‘Wangxian’ struck Lan Zhan like an open handed slap.

He’d composed ‘Wangxian’ during his initial convalescence after the burning of Cloud Recesses, but never played it before another living soul until he found himself facing the likelihood of a slow death in the Xuanwu’s cave.

Lan Zhan had bits and snatches of it in his head before then, but had not given into himself enough to actually write the song and polish it into something he wouldn’t be ashamed of playing in front of one particular person before then.

He landed on the rooftop behind Wei Ying in utter silence, muffling his sound and presence as he could not have at his apparent physical age. Wei Ying, meanwhile, was deep into his playing and did not notice as he played ‘Wangxian’ with a care and reverence that Lan Zhan thought might yank the beating heart out of his chest.

The Wild Geese's Tomb begins 11 years after the death of the Yiling Laozu. Lan Zhan dies during a Night Hunt that goes badly. And awakens shortly thereafter to the sight of Wei Ying, asleep at a student desk in the Library back in the days of the Gusu lectures.

What follows is a different path. Wei Ying behaves more and is punished less as a result. Meng Yao attends the lectures, and, as part of his 'punishment', Wei Ying is teaching him to better develop his core. Lan Zhan expects it is an eternal dream in the afterlife. It is a nice dream for Lan Zhan, at least until he hears a song from long ago.

The dizi Wei Ying uses is still green. As Lan Zhan undertakes to replace it with a spiritual tool, an exquisite red jade dizi is gifted by someone unknown, with a note that reads 'Little Dawn'. It is most certainly a spiritual tool.

Wei Ying is diagnosed with spiritual malaise by Wen Qing, who has also returned to the past. And a friendly brother proposes to speak on Lan Zhan's behalf to Jiang Yanli.

Familiar story beats appear in much different context and outcome, led by a Waterborne Abyss. Amidst misunderstandings on the part of a certain female Jin disciple with regard to discussions with Jiang Yanli, a confrontation with the Jin at the Cold Springs leads to the Yin Iron again making its appearance.

Negotiations for marriage are held, a small wedding occurs, and the quest for the Yin Iron continues.

There are changes. QishanWen appears to have problems: landslides, failed crops and more. The journey takes a different turn. There are flowers, and Xuanwu, and an invitation to an "educational event" in Nightless City.

There is a more formal wedding that takes place in Yunmeng, followed the next day by news of an attack on PinyangYao, followed days later by news from QishanWen.

And then there is the final chapter, in which, well … by this time you've read enough here to begin to form ideas.

I fully enjoyed this tale, and I hope you will as well.

Tomb of the Wild Geese

Summary: Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork.

He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time?

Wei Ying did not stir as he knelt down by the desk. It had been so long since Lan Zhan had seen those beloved features and even longer since he’d been allowed to either get or stay this close to Wei Ying.

He looked so different from Lan Zhan’s memories; apple cheeked, clean, and relaxed.

Lan Zhan clamped both hands over his own mouth to stop the pained noise that threatened to escape him. Hot tears spilled down his face as he watched the young, safe, and whole boy sleep.

His stomach cramped with the effort of holding the sound in, but he’d sooner die than wake Wei Ying up.

The Wild Hunt is a folklore motif. Wild Hunts typically involve a 'soul-raving' chase led by a folkloric figure(s) escorted by a ghostly or supernatural group of hunters passing in wild pursuit.

THREAD BELOW:

In German folklore, it is known as the Wilde Jagd or Wütendes Heer. The leader, often called der Schimmelreiter, is generally identified with the god Wotan. Seeing the Wild Hunt was thought to presage some catastrophe, it was also believed that people could be pulled away.

In Scandinavia, the leader of the hunt was Odin & the event was called Odens jakt or Oskoreien. Odin's hunt was heard but rarely seen, and a trait is that one of his dogs was barking louder and a second one fainter. When it was heard, it meant changing weather, war, or unrest.

In France, the 'Host' was known as Familia Hellequini and Maisnie Hellequin. This hunt was usually led by the devil or a demonic entity. Other similar figures appear in the French folklore, such as 'Le Grand-Veneur', a hunter who chased with dogs in the forest of Fontainebleau.

In England, it was known as Herlaþing, Woden's Hunt, Herod's Hunt, Cain's Hunt and Gabriel's Hounds. Different interpretations of the hunt had different leaders, some by demons, others by cursed men, and others by pagan gods, fairies, or angels. They are said to carry people off.

In parts of Britain, the hunt is said to be that of hell-hounds chasing sinners or the unbaptised. In Devon these are known as Yeth or Wisht Hounds. In Cornwall, they are Dando and his Dogs or the Devil and his Dandy Dogs. The hunt is particularly associated with Wistman's Wood.

The American country song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" from 1948, tells of cowboys condemned to chase the Devil's cattle through the night sky of the Western USA. Cowboys can be condemned to chase the Devil's cattle when they die if they do not repent for their sins.

In Welsh folklore, Cŵn Annwn were the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld. They were associated with a form of the Wild Hunt, presided over by Arawn, king of Annwn. In Wales, they were associated with migrating geese, and are considered a portent of death.

The Santa Compaña is a folkloric belief in rural northwest Iberia: Galicia, Asturias (Spain) and Northern Portugal. The common belief is that of a procession of the dead that wander through the village paths of a parish beginning at midnight wearing white, hooded cloaks.

In Welsh folklore, Gwyn ap Nudd was depicted as a wild huntsman riding a demon horse who hunts souls at night along with a pack of white-bodied and red-eared 'dogs of hell'. He is the king of the Underworld who makes sure that the imprisoned devils do not destroy human souls.

In the Czech Republic, divoký hon or štvaní is a term for a group of demonic beings, often considered the souls of the dead or hunters, who roam the sky or the earth with their leader, often at night. Stories of them are more common in the Bohemia region, and during Christmas.

In León, Span it is called "La Hueste de Animas", and involves a procession of the dead in forests or the sky at night. It is also called La Estadea, led by a woman who wanders the roads and cemeteries. It has no face and smells of the humidity of the tombs.

Dziki Łów or Dziki Gon is the Wild Hunt of Polish folklore. It is very similar to the Germanic variants but the leader is usually a Slavic deity instead of a German one, or the leader of the host is the devil himself.

The Jinetes en el Cielo is the Wild Hunt of Mexico and some of the US Southwest. It involves Hispanic cowboys (vaqueros, jinetes, or charros) condemned to chase the Devil's cattle through the night sky. Vaqueros can join them if they do not repent for their sins.

In Italy, especially in the Alpine area, the Caccia infernale is associated with distant lights, hoofs, dog barking, demonic screams, and a loud hiss of the wind. It is associated with the figure of Theodoric the Great or the Devil. Catholic faith can drive away the procession.

Count Arnau (el comte Arnau), a legendary nobleman from Ripollès, Catalunya, who for his cruelty and lechery is condemned to ride to hounds for eternity while his flesh is devoured by flames. He is the subject of a classic traditional Catalan ballad.

Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) is from Japanese folklore. Sometimes an orderly procession, other times a riot, it refers to an uncontrolled horde of countless numbers of supernatural creatures known as oni and yōkai.

In Slovenia, the hunt is usually led by Jarnik (Jarilo), also called Volčji pastir (Wolf Herdsman). In some variations mythical wild Baba leads the hunt.

In Hawaiian legend, Nightmarchers (huaka'i pō) are the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors. On the nights honoring the Hawaiian gods Kane, Ku, Lono, or on the nights of Kanaloa they are said to come forth from their burial sites, or to rise up from the ocean, and to march.

In the Netherlands, the hunt is led by Wodan or Gait/Derk met de hunties (Gait/Derk and his little dogs).

La Chasse-galerie also known as "The Bewitched Canoe" or "The Flying Canoe" is a popular French-Canadian tale of Coureurs des bois who make a deal with the devil, a variant of the Wild Hunt.

The sluagh sídhe—"the fairy host"—is sometimes depicted in Irish and Scottish folklore as a crowd of airborne spirits, perhaps the cursed, evil or restless dead. They are also known as "the horde". The siabhra, may be a type of these lesser spirits, prone to evil and mischief.

The missa dos mortos is a Brazilian legend. One night a church caretaker sees lights in the church. Thinking they were thieves, he investigates. To his surprise, he sees that the temple is full of the the Faithful, chandeliers lit and a priest preparing to celebrate a mass.

Everyone was wearing dark clothes and remained with their heads down. He also realizes that the environment was colder than the open one outside. When the priest turned, he saw that his face was a skull, and that everyone in the church was dead, a chapel full of skeletons!

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship which was said to never be able to make port, doomed to sail the oceans forever. The legend is likely to have originated from the 17th-century Golden Age of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and Dutch maritime power.

Zhou Zishu and Xie’er poems from the WoH artbook

In the Word of Honor artbook, there is a short poem for each character.

Interestingly, all poems for various pairs have the same number of syllables. Sometimes there are also phrases in rhyme, and lexical and/or thematic parallels. (I started paying attention to this after I saw a comment on weibo that the poems about Du Pusa and Qiao Luohan look like paired verses, complementing each other.)

Most of the poems in the artbook are pretty meh but the ones for Zhou Zishu and Xie Wang I like very much.

English isn’t my first language so I apologize in advance for the clumsiness of my translations.

Zhou Zishu

执子之手，坐看云舒。 zhí zǐ zhī shǒu, zuò kàn yún shū Hold your hand; sit watching the clouds dissipate.

The 1st part is a quote from the poem 击鼓 of the "Book of Songs" (Shijing), which fully looks like this: "hold your hand, grow old together with you" 执子之手，与子偕老.

击鼓其镗，踊跃用兵。土国城漕，我独南行。从孙子仲，平陈与宋。不我以归，忧心有忡。爰居爰处？爰丧其马？于以求之？于林之下。死生契阔，与子成说。执子之手，与子偕老。于嗟阔兮，不我活兮。于嗟洵兮，不我信兮。

As soon as drums were heard - soldiers immediately took their weapons. Great earthen walls were built in Cao; I alone went to the South. Following general Sun Zizhong, we put down the kingdoms of Chen and Song. I'm worried and heartbroken because they still don’t want to lead us home. Where shall I find a shelter? I lost my horse in panic; where to look for it? How can I find it? In the forest under the trees... I have vowed to live and die with you, Holding your hand, and growing old together. Oh, how bitter is the separation! Oh, how bitter that I won’t be able to fulfill my oath! (My translation, based on commentary and translation into modern Chinese from Baidu Baike.)

The 2nd phrase, "sit watching the clouds dissipate" 坐看云舒 - a reference to this fragment from 小窗幽记, a philosophical and moralistic work of Chen Jizhu (Ming era): Indifferently accepting both fame and dishonor, look how flowers in the garden bloom - and fall; without interfering with the natural course of things (i.e. life and death), admire from afar how clouds in the sky gather up - and dissipate. 宠辱不惊，看庭前花开花落；去留无意，望天上云卷云舒。

The general meaning of Zhou Zishu's verse is made up of the meaning of both references: I would like to meet old age with you, away from all the worries of worldly life, serenely looking at the clouds in the sky, but I am heartbroken to know that I won’t be able to keep this promise.

Xie Wang

万里雪殇君莫笑，就中更有痴儿女。 wànlǐ xuě shāng jūn mò xiào, jiù zhōng gèng yǒu chī érnǚ [Under] 10,000 li of snow to die prematurely - lord, no need to laugh; this devotions surpasses even the most loving human couples.

The 1st phrase contains a quote from the poem by Wang Han (Tang era) "Poem-ci to the tune of Liangzhou":

葡萄美酒夜光杯，欲饮琵琶马上催。醉卧沙场君莫笑，古来征战几人回。 Fine grape wine in a goblet of luminous white jade - We intend to drink, but the pipa urges us to mount and fight. Drunken, we fall asleep on the battlefield, - lord, no need to laugh! From time immemorial few returned home from military campaigns. (My translation, based on commentary and translation into modern Chinese from Baidu Baike.)

The 2nd phrase (就中更有痴儿女) is a quote from “Wild Geese Tomb” 雁丘词 by Yuan Haowen (Song era). A hunter once told Yuan Haowen the following story: "This morning I caught and killed a wild goose, and the other escaped the trap. But it did not fly away, but fell to the ground and thereby killed itself." The poet was moved and created the verses:

问世间，情是何物，直教生死相许？天南地北双飞客，老翅几回寒暑。欢乐趣，离别苦，就中更有痴儿女。君应有语：渺万里层云，千山暮雪，只影向谁去？横汾路，寂寞当年箫鼓，荒烟依旧平楚。招魂楚些何嗟及，山鬼暗啼风雨。天也妒，未信与，莺儿燕子俱黄土。千秋万古，为留待骚人，狂歌痛饮，来访雁丘处。

O World! What is love? That engages couple of geese through life and death. From South to North together they flew, how many seasons have they been together. Happy in shared laughter, and devastated in final separation. Their devotions to each other surpasses even the most loving human couples. The couple of geese sighed,“Flying under ten thousand miles of layered clouds, and across a thousand snowy mountains alone, for whom shall I trail a forlorn shadow.” (This was translated by David Ho-yi Chan; the lines below are translated by me, based on https://www.gushimi.org/shangxi/12844.html) Crossing the [river] Fenhe [where the geese are buried]: silence and solitude where flutes and drums sounded during the [Han empire's] heyday; overgrown with weeds and shrouded in haze again homeless plains. Ah, why is it impossible to summon the souls of the dead?! The mountain demoness is weeping in the darkness - by rain and wind. [So let] even Heaven envy [the glory of the love of this pair of geese]: a wild goose that committed suicide being unable to live without his beloved will not lie unknown in the yellow earth like orioles and swallows! Throughout the years and forever and ever, the poet will glorify them: sing at the top of your voice and drink until drunk, visiting the Wild Geese Tomb!

The mental image formed by Xie Wang’s poem is extremely touching: the acceptance of self-inflicted death, the eternal fidelity to the one he loved, and the glory of love that transcends life and death.

So I am one of those mad hypocrites who posts fics piece by piece all the time with the super helpful chapter 3/???????? set ups and yet I generally refuse to read WIPs of any kind. That being said, I am currently madly in love with a handful of fics that I have dubbed “Totally Worth Reading as a WIP” with the knowledge that even if the worst should happen and they are abandoned, there is enough awesomeness in them already to make it worth while. Also, in that they make me made ungodly noises and drop everything when I get an update email.

Wangxian WIPs totally worth reading:

A Narrow Bridge by FrameofMind and Jo Lasalle https://archiveofourown.org/works/27244813/chapters/66555598 Currently 32/49 chapters Once, Lan Wangji made a choice to step aside. Ten years after Wei Ying’s death, he finds a way back to choose again.

My comments: OMG, a time travel fic (one with LWJ as the time traveler!!!), so well written, giving us that sweet sweet wangxian and pining with bonus fucking while pining, but also fleshed out Wen Remnants. Like, we get to know a lot of them. There is such an aching, beautiful quality to this story. Not to mention it’s already over 300,000 words. As is, the sweet emotional pay off is already there, though I can tell there will be more too, so this is definitely a fic worth reading. It also seems that this team of authors has been faithfully updating the fic for the last year, most recently just a few days back!

often through the purple night by cqlorphan ( @jingyismom ) https://archiveofourown.org/works/33614869/chapters/83530858 Currently 7/? chapters Courtesan Lan Wangji was educated as part of the highest of high class entertainers, much sought-after by scholars and princes and leaders of sects. His skills are of the highest caliber, and do not in any way involve sex. But times are changing.

My comments: This is a lovely, achy fic in an AU where the Wen dominated the cultivator world in the past while all our main characters were still young children. Lan Wangji is fascinating and so vulnerable and deeply feeling under his outward strength and stoic competence, and as always, Wei Wuxian is an unexpected vector that spins LWJ’s entire world in new and terrifying directions. The whole idea is fascinating, I can’t wait to see where it goes, but ultimately for me, cqlorphan’s meditations on vulnerability and the joys and terrors of being seen and known are at the core of what draws me into this fic! This fic has been sporadically updating over the last month.

true gold fears no fire by defractum https://archiveofourown.org/works/23812717/chapters/57213883 Currently 8/? chapters Lan Wangji encounters a mysterious stranger on his rooftop. Alternatively, the Emperor of China has heard rumours of an intruder sneaking into the Forbidden City, a shadow that has eluded the best of his guards. (Alternatively, Wei Ying just really wanted a drink.)

My comments: This is another fic with a fascinating set up, having Wei Ying married off as Empress to Emperor Lan Wangji. There’s so many things to love. Identity reveal, court politics, the play of power dynamics and intimacy, unspoken histories, a Plot Afoot! I love what is already here with some great moments, but I am looking forward to learning more! Looks like it’s been underway for a year and a half at this point, but there was a recent update, so fingers crossed!

Honorary shout out to the no-longer-a-wip:

The Wild Geese’s Tomb by The Feels Whale ( @thefeelswhale ) https://archiveofourown.org/works/33639346/chapters/83594473 Complete (7/7) Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork. He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time?

My comments: Another riveting time travel fic that sucked me in early and made me scream along as I impatiently waited for each and every update. As much as I love getting to read the entire thing, I kinda miss that rush of getting an update email for this fic!
