Step By Step, ep 9
in which they gave us all the angst (also Sad SnacksTM)
Tumblr media
I loved this episode. I did not expect them to get to this point so quickly, but I’m here for it.
In bullets:
After last week, I thought we were headed for a straightforward ‘realisation of feelings’ narrative, so I did not see Pat’s reaction to Jeng’s confession coming. [I should have, because Unter Uns had a serious break-up surrounded by plants, and that was the first thing I thought of. It’s an incredibly beautiful scene but wow was it painful.]
Related to that, Pat starting out that scene by establishing boundaries? Perfect. I was applauding him so hard for that.
I’m more than a little confused about the timeframe of everything that happened. When did Ae get so far along in her pregnancy? There was clearly a time skip, and I’m assuming it happened towards the beginning of the episode. But it’s hard to tell.
Related to that: How long has Jeng been sad?!! That poor man. He broke my heart this episode. That whole scene when he broke down with his brother was brutal. I loved it, but it hurt to watch. And major kudos to the actor. He managed to convey Jeng’s dejected pain and hopeless love just from crying. I don’t know how he did it. Gah, I’m sad all over again just thinking about it.
Pat and Jen bonding over the brothers was perfect. I hope we get more of that when Jen comes back.
There was so much cake in this episode, that I was craving it by the end. Sadly, all I have are blueberry muffins.
Brief Put sighting! That was a great use of social media to bring in side characters there wasn’t time to fully explore in this episode.
As for next week: hoo-boy.

Only Friends.06
Tumblr media
All hell breaks loose at the halfway point. Let the bullet points commence!
Fan edit montage opening - nice
Mew has two moms!
I like that Mew could be interpretated as either demisexual or a late bloomer, based on what we’ve seen and heard from him so far; I’m leaning late bloomer myself.
oh Top you are in for a fall buddy
“we keep our personal lives away from work” hah
Really Boston? Someone films you without your consent and you’re rightly upset about it, but you have no problem doing the same thing to your friends.
I've said it before, but this tension between Sand and Top is a lot, even for stealing an ex. There are six episodes left and I really hope we get more background for them because it still feels like there is more going on. I need to know! (Also, put First and Force in another show together please and thank you GMMTV. They play off of each other so well.)
I know that Top and Mew are likely not going to make it (for a variety of reasons) but I sure wish they would. I like their relationship progression.
ugh Boston you suck (can't wait to go back through my notes when the show is over and count up how many times I wrote that LOL)
The awkward truth-bomb speech yikes. Why is no one stopping Ray instead of standing around waiting for whatever else he’s going to say? Plot reasons make things so stupid sometimes.
Ray :(
First and Khao man - they’re just so good - that last scene was brutal but I couldn’t take my eyes off of them
hah I knew it - Mew knows, but also yikes
That was really well done. Mew seducing Top with the express purpose of revealing he knows Top slept with Ton was so gross but such soapy goodness. It's right up there with Aaron telling Chrissie about the affair*. Top tier entertainment.
But then the writers did the 'suffer in silence' thing that I absolutely hate where the person who did wrong is not allowed to speak or explain what actually happened (because facts and talking things out like adults resolves arguments faster). In this case, yes Top slept with Ton and he's letting Mew speak his piece about it, but Mew’s assumptions about the reasons why are way off base and Top isn’t even defending himself which only confirms everything Mew is thinking. And like I said, I know why they do it - it’s the last scene in the episode so they want viewers to come back and find out what happens next. But as a viewer, I hate watching it when the scene is unlikely to be continued in the next episode. At best, we'll get flashbacks to more of their conversation.
next week’s preview??!?!?!! - Mew lost his serial killer glasses but that obviously didn’t mean anything, based on the last shot. Or else the editing team has seen the "unhinged Mew" posts and are having fun with us.
I know I complain a lot about plot stuff but in reality I'm eating this show up. The only thing that would make it better would be a murder plot, but I have a feeling this is not that show.
*waves to the robron fandom

Cut that tension with a knife.
If this was a Western-produced show these two would be all over my dash right now.
They are far and away more interesting to watch than the canon pairing.

Tumblr media
selections from my week in media [4-10 february 2024]
[reading]
The Comeback by Lily Chu
[watching]
Amidst a Snowstorm of Love - I'm on episode three or four and I don't know if I'll continue. It's extremely slow paced, which normally I don't mind but it feels excessive in this case. And the acting isn't grabbing me enough to make up for it.
Blind {finished: 4 stars} - I think I changed my mind about Sung Hoon every single episode. lol They did such a great job keeping the lid on what the heck was actually going on and making me question everything. I loved it.
Destiny Seeker - I don't remember why I had this on my list, but I think it's Tumblr's fault. I'm only a few episodes in and all I can think right now is that the actors are better than the production.
"Fast Car" / Tracy Chapman & Luke Combs - Their Grammys duet was so good I cried. She smiled and I was done for. It's just one of those songs for me. Every time I hear her sing it, I get quiet inside. No better way to explain it really.
For Him - Ring pops as a courting gift: awww. Te with his new crush: awww. Nail and Him making out in a realistically awkward position on the bed because the pillows got in the way: awww (been there LOL).
Pit Babe {finished: 4 stars} - That was a great finale. I wish we'd gotten to see Babe angry about being lied to so cruelly, but the plot being what it was, there was literally no time for that. Fic will have to explore that, along with so much else the show left for us to deal with. Way. Kenta. Pete. The rest of the world-building. (Did we ever hear the words 'beta' or 'omega'?) I thoroughly enjoyed watching this show every week and I'm going to miss it.
Twins {finished: 2 stars} - They really waited until the last episode for the twin reveal. argh. On a better show, First dumped Sprite with prejudice, then had a 10 year time skip epilogue, with a second chance romance meet cute. Also, History2: Crossing the Line would like its volleyball net kiss back.

selections from my week in media [28 january - 3 february 2024]
[listening]
"Atlantis" / SHINee
"I Got You" / TWICE
"Jackpot" / Vanner
[loving]
The lovely easyness of the intimacy work done by the two leads in Love For Love's Sake. The Korean BLs have been improving in that respect and I hope the trend continues.
[watching]
For Him - I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the wrong edit got submitted to IQIYI for release. There's two episodes left and the plot has also gone off the rails more than a little so I may wait to watch the last two together. Because yikes.
Love For Love's Sake {finished: 5 stars} - First five star show of the month and it earned every one. Beautiful beautiful show.
Pit Babe - Oh Kenta. :(
You Are My Glory {finished: 5 stars} - The comfort watch of comfort watches, muchly needed this week. I love it so much.

For Him, ep 10
I'm stunned that the producers thought that was a finished episode, ready for airing.
The sound was all over the place, at least one conversation beween characters was so stilted it felt like they were still in rehearsal, and were scenes missing towards the end?
I'm also more than a little confused why the B plot is suddenly so serious, when the A plot is right there? What happened to Te's obsession with Blue/Nail? And who's this guy he's flirting with all of a sudden?
I seriously feel like I missed an entire episode of plot.
You were doing so well, show. WTH happened?
p.s. Dream/Chaochom were super cute though; I'll give them that.

Tumblr media
selections from my week in media [21-27 january 2024]
[dropping]
Last Twilight - I watched the first episode when it aired last year and decided to wait to binge the whole thing. It ended this week and from what I've read so far, it's most likely not going to be worth the time I could devote to something else on my list.
[listening]
"Good Girls" / Elle King
"Love Wins All" / IU
"Lovers or Enemies" / CIX
"Wife" / G-IDLE
[loving]
Yeowoon's little pout about killed me dead. I'd love to know if that was an actor choice or the director's. - Love For Love's Sake, ep 4
[reading]
Glitterland by Alexis Hall - m/m contemporary romance - Excellent book but heavy themes.
Turn Left by kianspo - MDZS canon divergence AU - Lan Wangji grows up away from the Lan sect
[watching]
For Him - Domestic bliss for Nail and Him now that everything is out in the open and Nail is secure in Him's feelings. They were so sweet with Honey. And we finally got some Dream/Chaochum scenes! I wish they were the second pairing instead of the detestable Chao. I've rarely been so annoyed by a character that I mute their scenes but here we are. Phai, great sex isn't worth the annoyance. Move on and find a new FWB.
Love For Love's Sake - I'm so glad I started this one. It's a darling little show, beautifully shot. Episodes 1 and 2 set up the game mechanics and introduced a well-rounded cast of interesting characters that I immediately fell in love with. Episodes 3 and 4 gave us the most adorable baby flirt in Yeowoon. The actor is so good: his face changes entirely when he's looking at Myungha now that he's caught feelings.
Pit Babe - Last week was all about the tears, this week was an assortment of character stuff. Alan and Jeff got together finally (the magnetic charm bracelets!) and Pete's storyline has been developed a lot further than I expected when he first appeared, but it's very good. I hope this show results in fic of both pairings because Pete's interactions with both Way and Kenta are just that good. There is so much story in both relationships to explore.
The Sign - Phaya and Tharn, being soft boyfriends in bed for 10 straight minutes is an excellent way to start off an episode.
The Story of Park's Marriage Contract {finished: 5 stars} - The h/c was strong with this one. Loved it. The love story was great and I appreciated that they spent time on the final resolution, instead of making her return a quick fix. It was sad, but it was done well I think. I loved all the characters so much and will be adding it to the list of shows I'd like to rewatch.

selections from my week in media [14-20 january 2024]
[listening]
"All Ours" / All (H)Ours
"Hmm Bop" / Hui
"Cold Killer" / Hui feat. Jinhyuk
"Sweet Chaos" / DAY6
"When We Meet Again" / Lee Junho
"Weekend" / Taeyeon
[loving]
Pavel's devastating performance in Pit Babe this week. I am a loud and proud angst/whump/h-c lover from my earliest days in fandom and he made me cry twice. Fantastic job, kid.
[watching]
The Brothers Sun {finished: 3 stars} - The acting is a little flat and I didn't find the younger brother as funny as I think he is supposed to be. But the story was excellent and it picked up a lot in the second half.
For Him - We finally get a definitive answer about what happened to Blue and it was exactly what I feared. I half thought he might be in a hospital somewhere, because that would still fit with how all of his friends and Him were acting. But no. The contrast between Him's supportive mother, who got him into therapy when she saw how badly he was struggling and Blue's abusive parents whose expectations made him miserable, was stark.
Gyeongseong Creature {finished: 5 stars} - This first part is brutal and I loved it a huge amount. But it did increase my desire to find a decent book on Korean history because what I learned in world history in the 90s would fit on the head of a pin. I need the second part to be released asap, pls and thank you Netflix. Also, will there be zombies? Because it seems like an argument could be made. If there are, I will watch anyway and keep a pillow shield handy.
Pit Babe - Gimme that sweet sweet angst. I knew what was coming as soon as Charlie told Babe how his powers could return and was not disappointed. Highlight of the week.
School Spirits {finished: 4 stars} - Pretty good teen paranormal murder mystery that my partner and I knocked out in one couch day last weekend. It's not super original: a high school senior dies on school grounds and finds out there are other ghosts stuck too - murder mystery commences. The characters were engaging though and the twist at the end kinda came out of nowhere (par the course for me though), so now I'm looking forward to season two.

"Strings" / SF9
"Stay for a Night" / Minho

"I don’t think a lot of thought was put into writing this, but I can’t stop reading it. This is why soap operas do well." - Lee Do Hwa, Extraordinary You, episode 26
You hit the nail on the head, kid.
[reading]
Seoulmates by Susan Lee - YA contemporary romance - pretty good for the genre; I'd read more by this author
[watching]
Extraordinary You - This was a fun teen romance kdrama with a fantasy twist. It's a "comic characters become aware" plot and I thought it was interesting that the characters didn't try to actually leave the comic and instead just tried to change their 'setup' (fate), with varying levels of success. I enjoyed it a lot.
For Him - This episode fell so flat for me. I loved the girl squad. I liked the two friend groups teaming up to get their respective friends talking again. I loved how how firm Nail still is with Te's 'flirting.' He's not giving Te any reason to think he has a chance and walks away the first chance he gets. But nothing happened and the plot didn't move forward until the very end, so yeah. Flat as a pancake. And I don't like pancakes.
Pit Babe - I love this show and I love Charlie and Babe so much. I find it amusing that the Mama/Papa kinky talk has now morphed into pet names. I didn't quite expect the level of Way's desperation that was made clear this week, but I'm here for it. I honestly didn't think the show would go that dark (despite the extremely dark premise), but all the actors did an amazing job. Pavel is a stand out and once again he sold the emotions fully. He's so good.
The Sign - Another great episode from the Thai BL-sphere this week. But has anyone else noticed the 3D filter on all the CGI flashbacks or is it just my old eyes? It makes all those scenes slightly blurry so I basically check out of all those scenes, and unfortunately there was a lot of it this week. Apart from that, it was a whump-tastic episode that I thoroughly enjoyed, starting with Phaya's dream and ending with Tharn devastated at the side of the river. Both actors did an outstanding job selling their respective scenes without going over the top.

Taikan Yoho (My Personal Weatherman).02
Tumblr media
I am cackling.
After episode one, I was all prepared for (and looking forward to) a dark and moody angsty jdrama. But the revelation of what is really going on put that assumption to rest right quick.
Segasaki and Yoh win the award for Worst BL Miscommunication. One of them thinks they're so committed, they're practically married and the other thinks he's a sugar baby. And on top of that, the whole "no sex when it rains" rule was based on yet another miscommunication. That could easily have been solved by buying more sheets! Or a dryer, as Yoh points out.
If I wasn't already in love with this show, that'd have done it.
Now we have an endless two-week wait to see how their first official date goes. And to see what else this show pulls on us.
I can't wait.

For Him, eps 1-2
Tumblr media
Well, I'm hooked.
The Nail/Jay break-up was the most realistic break-up argument I've seen in a romance in a long time. I also appreciated that they showed some of their history and how happy they had been before. Crossing my fingers they don't bring Jay back to be an unrepentant asshole, instead of the dumb college kid who doesn't know how to communicate that he is. I know it's unlikely, but let him learn and grow from his mistake.
Nail - I love how confident he is about what he wants from his relationship with Him. He's laid down his boundaries and is sticking to them so far. I wonder what it will take for those boundaries to move.
The acting is better than I expected. Te's anger at Him especially stood out in episode two. Can't wait to find out what that's about.
The bed scenes are really well done, incorporating character details that make them richer and more intimate. The removing of Nail's jewelry was particularly good. What are they going to be like once Nail and Him are actually in love with each other?! (Please don't water them down once that happens, show.) Also, are they switching? It was hard to tell, but it seemed like it. If so, that's a nice change.
Him - I wish the actor was a little better, but he's not terrible by any means. He's just hard to read sometimes and I can't easily tell what Him is thinking about Blue. Part of that is not knowing exactly what happened. We don't know if Blue died or just left. The fact that his friends are celebrating his birthday had me thinking he's dead, but then that flashback happened and now I'm confused. Apart from that, I am here for Him's angsty brooding. Give me more.
Blue - I am so intrigued about what is going on there. He's being played by the same actor as Nail, so does that mean he is/was Blue or that they're being cute with the production? And now I'm trying to remember if any of Him's friends have seen Nail yet. (If this show is based on a book, then please no spoilers. I don't want to know what's really going on until the show tells me.)
The greek chorus girl gang cliches are part of Nail's friend group - love that and it makes them loads less annoying to watch. Their scene in ep 2 when Him showed up looking for Nail was very funny.
Why are Him and his friends in a band? Seriously, why? At least the song was dubbed. I don't think I've liked a college BL band since TharnType. Oh wait, I take that back: the My School President band was good. So two bands have been good.
Dream and Chaochom are exceedingly cute and have such great chemistry after only two scenes? The door scene was hilarious.
I don't know if I will watch weekly or if I'll save up episodes to binge. More and more, I'm finding I enjoy the Thai dramas better when I binge them. Either way, I can't wait to see what happens next in this one.

selections from my week in media [10-16 december 2023]
[listening]
Castaway Diva OST
[playing]
Coral Island - This is the first farming game I've played so the learning curve is a bit steep, but it's so pretty and the characters are so fun (also my first time romancing a character, which is also fun).
[reading]
Max Two Verse series by heartsdesire456 - Malec AU-canon div - Alec raises a Downworlder foundling - reread
[watching]
Castaway Diva - What a perfectly fantastic drama, with a beautiful soundtrack, plenty of angst, and an amazing cast.
Moon in the Day - I knew it couldn't end in a happily ever after, but I'm glad we got to see their next life's meet cute. This drama was just as good as I'd hoped.
The Sign - They went full Criminal Minds on steroids with the police investigation which was a little surprising for a show that pixelates butts. Speaking of pixelated butts, Tharn's sex dream was interrupted by the realization that there was a window in the shower, looking out onto the bed. They really need to stop filming in hotel rooms. Or at least acknowledge that Tharn has very specific kinks. LOL

selections from my week in media [13-19 august 2023]
Tumblr media
Big Mouth / Hidden Agenda / Red White and Royal Blue / Taikan Yoho
[listening]
Into the A to Z / ATEEZ
[watching]
Big Mouth - Fantastic show. The last episode made me cry buckets, but wow was the final takedown satisfying.
Hidden Agenda - Communication! \o/ The debate club setting in this show seemed like a boring choice at first, but now we're seeing the results. Look at these kids, using their words.
Jun & Jun - A very confusing episode this week. Choi Jun tells Lee Jun he has a fiance, and yet is stunned when Lee Jun doesn't want to date. Also something is going on with Simeon and Hyun Jae. This show is turning out to be yet another Korean BL held back by the short-form format, since they seem to want to take their time letting the plot unfold and there just isn't enough airtime for that.
Only Friends - I have way too many thoughts after episode two. So I'm just going to keep watching and see if I'm right about how the Top/Mew plotline develops.
Red White and Royal Blue - The movie adaption exceeded my expectations. Hopefully, the success of this movie will mean more queer romcoms are in our future.
Taikan Yoho - LOL
Wedding Plan - Lom runs a gauntlet of family and friends, and finally manages to come clean to Nuea. Satisfying but still irritating that it took this long. Full episode notes here.

selections from my week in media [27 august - 2 september 2023]
[anticipating]
Key's upcoming album release
[listening]
Veni Vidi Vici / Vanner
Pado / Pentagon
[loving]
Lom, the abandoned groom, in episode 7 of Wedding Plan. He was so happy to be left at the altar. It was very cute.
[reading]
The Metropolis Women's Auxiliary League by rageprufrock - New Smallville fic from one of my favorite authors! \o/
[watching]
Hidden Agenda - The guys were both, by turns, plot stupid this week, but all was forgiven as soon as Joke lifted-and-turned Zo like it was nothing at the end.
Jun & Jun - Choi Jun finally uses his words and gives Lee Jun some reassurance (but still can't tell him everything right now for some reason?) about where they stand. It was very sweet. We have barely gotten anything concrete about Simeon and Hyeong, but after episode 6 I'm wondering if Simeon's feelings for Lee Jun are a kind of transference? Or he's going after him because he knows that Hyeong is in love with Jun? He does seem genuinely upset about being rejected, so I don't think it's all a ploy to get Hyeong jealous. A second season around them could be very interesting. I need to know what is going on with them!
Kiseki: Dear to Me - Loved seeing the Be Loved in House pair show up this week. We're still in the past/flashback story and I'm wondering how much longer we'll be there. It feels like we've barely gotten close to the events that result in Zhongyi going to jail.
Only Friends - Great episode. Have some thoughts.
Taikan Yoho (My Personal Weatherman) - He bought three new sheet sets plus summer sheets. Let's go! I love this show so much.
Wedding Plan - A lighter end to the series than I expected, but I enjoyed it.
