I'm insulted that you feel the need to even ask this question.

OF COURSE I watched The Lady Bird Diaries immediately and it's fantastic. I was obviously already aware of what a priceless source of fascinating detail on the history of her time that Lady Bird's diaries are. In my opinion, they are one of the most extraordinary perspectives of the Presidency by someone so close to the institution that has ever been created -- even more illuminating than most autobiographies or books written by actual Presidents. On their own they are remarkable, and Lady Bird Johnson is a tremendously underrated and unappreciated figure of the 20th Century.

But Dawn Porter went above and beyond with crafting something even more incredible out of source material that would be interesting enough if it was standing alone. In just a few years, Dawn Porter has made a half-dozen stunning films on American history and politics and culture and it's a staggering achievement. If you haven't done so yet, go watch The Lady Bird Diaries NOW. Both Lady Bird Johnson and Dawn Porter are American originals and American treasures.

Well, another year has passed and the only thing I can say is that my love for you has only increased. Once again I had the privilege of seeing you much bigger than you already are. Even with all the tribulations that this horrible year has had and with all the people trying to cancel you, you once again showed what you were meant to be: a movie star. Seeing you increasingly becoming a strong name makes me sure that you came to carve your name in the history of cinema and it is an honor for me to be able to be a witness to your story. I love you, I admire you and I hope that you always have the wisdom to be involved in the best projects. looking for alaska, call me by your name, beautiful boy, my mad fat diary, moxie, lady bird, all the bright places, little women... these are the works of art that shaped me and continue to do so. they made me who i am : they lead me on, brought me up, only to crush me at the end. i cannot begin to explain the hold they have on me. i feel connected to each character. i feel understood by them. they showed me that it's ok to feel deeply, it's ok to linger on a thought a little too long, it's ok to choose dying over speaking because sometimes speaking and not being understood only reinforces the hypothesis that no one will ever get you. and i cannot afford losing that small glimmer of hope, the one that tells me that some day someone will completely be engulfed in me. that when i address them, they will put down their phone, tilt their head a little to the right and look straight into your eyes. and for a moment there, you become the most important person in the room.

“The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady” ~Edith Holden

On January 1, 1906, Edith Holden made the first entry in a diary which was to record the countryside through the changing seasons. Her words, all carefully written by hand, include her favorite poems, personal thoughts, and observations on the wildlife surrounding her home in the village of Olton, Warwickshire. The exceptionally beautiful paintings on every page of birds, butterflies, bees, and flowers reflect her deep love of nature; they have been executed with a naturalist’s eye for detail and the sensitivity of an artist.

Edith Holden’s diary of that year became a very special book for her, and she allowed no one to see it. For seventy years, this enchanting book had lain undiscovered until it was found recently on the shelves of an English country house. Now being published for the first time, this full-color facsimile edition recaptures all the freshness, charm, and beauty of the original. The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady is a book for all seasons, a gift for all times.

Edith Holden was born at Kings Norton, Worcester, in 1871, one of seven children of a Midlands paint manufacturer. The family lived in the small village of Olton in Warwickshire, and it was there that she wrote and illustrated this book. After attending art school, she worked as an illustrator, with her drawings (often of animals) being published in several books.

She later moved to London and in 1911 met and married Ernest Smith, a sculptor; they lived in Chelsea and had no children. On March 16, 1920, in her forty-ninth year, Edith died tragically by drowning in the Thames, while gathering buds from Chestnut trees.
