Sirius had left. He'd run straight to the arms of his friends, and left his brother alone.

Strangely enough, Regulus didn't feel betrayed. Maybe he should, but this was always bound to happen. He'd known it before he'd accidentally discovered that Lupin was a werewolf, before Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor, and even before Sirius had left for Hogwarts that very first time.

Sirius had been worried, then. Nothing he said in words, but he'd given him an awkward hug, pat his back, and pressed a kiss to his forehead. He'd looked into his eyes, questioning.

Will you be okay?

Regulus hadn't known, but he'd nodded nonetheless. His brother would be free. His brother would be happy. His brother could do no wrong.

Sirius's yearning for freedom had always been too strong, and now he'd found enough love amongst his friends to fill up the space their parents had left. Regulus knew deep down that he could have run too, either with Sirius or to Pandora's, but he was all too aware of the potential consequences.

If only one son ran? Then there'd be trouble with his parents and the Dark Lord, sure, but ultimately, Sirius would be labeled the nuisance, the disappointment, the disgrace. If both sons ran away? Then, the entire family was disgraced. Regulus was too scared of the Dark Lord for that to happen. He was scared of what might happen to his parents, his relatives, his cousins. Although his feelings about his parents were mixed, he didn't wish them harm. Narcissa, too, had deflected questions away from him far too many times.

Sirius hadn't realized any of this, he was sure. He remained blissfully unaware that if Regulus ran too, neither would be free. Their parents would never let that happen. Always impulsive and headstrong, Sirius was. And he was supposed to be the older brother. How odd. Regulus loved him.

Regulus thinks back to that silent question. Will he be okay?

He's not sure, even now, but like five years ago, he ignores his doubt, pushes it into the recesses of his heart, and nods, once, in the dark. Regulus doesn't know what he wants, and he doesn't have all the answers, but that night, he sleeps secure in the knowledge that somewhere out there, Sirius is safe.

chapter 40:

1. HE RETURNS THE FUCKING HAT

5. “When Pandora arrives, she takes one look at Sirius and promptly bursts into tears.” NOOO MY BABY GIRL

6. “James had appeared at the top of the stairs, his hair a fucking mess and his shirt on inside-out, so Sirius had an idea of what he'd just walked in on even before James beamed at him and announced, "I just had sex with your brother. Four times."

He'd sounded so proud, too.”

7. “This morning, James had looked him dead in the eyes and said with no shame whatsoever, "I'm going to go spend all day having sex with your brother and pretending that everything isn't shit. We'll see you later, yeah?"

To that, Sirius could only sigh and reply, "Yeah."”

8. “There's a beat, and then—the irony. Because of course. Not just once, not twice, but three fucking times, like he's fucking destined for it. He'd laugh, if he could breathe.

"Regulus Black."”

i am once again holding back tears on public transportation. i’m so angry

9. “Sirius hears his little brother's name, and he's sixteen again.”

i’m no longer holding back tears. i am fully crying

10. and once again, he volunteers. becuase its instinct. its love. promises be damned, there’s no stronger instinct to sirius than to protect his brother

11. “No, it comes down to mother and son now.” sobbing. sobbing so hard. this line fucking hurts more than you could ever know

12. 😧 regulus volunteered. regulus volunteered. it’s brother against brother. i. i. shit

13. “”It's already done, baby," Regulus whispers.

"You promised," James whimpers.

Regulus gives him a sad smile. "I lied."”

sobbing. deep sobbing. i am still on public transport

14. i hate that dora doesn’t understand the gravity of this situation. she just loves her cousin. and also, i love andy

Everyone in Regulus's life knows he loves James Potter more than he ever loves himself. Regulus also knows that James will always choose Sirius and Lily over him. When James and Regulus broke up with no hesitation on James' part; Regulus left because he knew it himself that everyone he loved eventually leave him. He may love them but he has never been important or a priority to them (his brother, his cousins, his friends, and the love of his life).

Regulus gets caught by the death eaters and Voldemort because they discovered his betrayal and Reg laughs at Voldemort's face when he taunted him about killing him in public for all the wizarding world to see what would happen if you betrayed the dark lord. "I don't care if you kill me in public when no one will ever mourn me. They didn't care about me even before I was branded in your mark. You're just wasting your time."

What Regulus doesn't know is that Bellatrix and Narcissa (good cousins!!!) are making plans with his friends to save him which eventually leads them to contact Sirius and the others for help. Also, James and Sirius deeply regretted their actions towards Regulus and trying so damn hard to rescue him.

all the hidden meanings!

colors:

red is the color of sirius’ shirt, narcissa’s lips and regulus’ pocket handkerchief. red represents how they rebelled against their family (sirius ran away and was openly against their morals, narcissa lied to voldemort and basically helped defeating him w her words, regulus turned against voldemort at the last moment, dying for his cause)

narcissa and andromeda are the only ones not wearing black, and they’re the only survivors in this picture.

clothes and accessories:

andromeda is wearing a white dress that resembles a bride’s dress, because she ran away to marry ted. her and sirius’s clothes are also less restricting than regulus and narcissa’s, because unlike their younger siblings they got their freedom.

andromeda, like her cousins, is wearing silver jewelry, aside from a gold ring (her engagement ring), and with her hand she’s covering a family pendant (she chose love over her family). regulus is wearing a pin that looks like salazar’s locket.

poses and such:

andromeda isn’t looking at the camera because she was the first to “look away from her family”, and sirius is looking at her because he would soon follow in her footsteps (andy also has a hand on his shoulder to further represent her influence on him). similarly, bellatrix (who is the only one smiling) is keeping an hand on narcissa so she wouldn’t leave. narcissa has a hand clenched in a fist, covered by her left, (as a way to hide her defiance).
