"VeronaVille was imagined as a R&J homage from the beginning..." - Jonathan Knight, Lead Producer of The Sims 2, and where are Viola from
Tumblr media
- No, VeronaVille was imagined as a R&J homage from the beginning... in part inspired by the Tudor decor set, and also my personal passion for Shakespeare.
Tumblr media
- Oh. Thank you for answering!Veronaville is my favourito neighborhood ❤️
I know this is a stretch, but do you remember if there was more families planned for Veronaville? Someone was able to find information of a Sim named Viola in the code for a lot, we assumed her a Monty.
Tumblr media
I don't remember, but I was watching a lot of "Shakespeare in Love" around that time, so it wouldn't surprise me!
Annotation to the film "Shakespeare in Love":
Tumblr media
1594. The young playwright William Shakespeare is in a creative crisis: his muse has left him, there is no money, and the theater owner demands that the author write a new play as soon as possible. And when, it would seem, the writer has no hope of finding new inspiration, his life is invaded by love itself in the person of a charming aristocrat Viola.
That's where Viola came from.

MY SHAKESPEAREAN LOVE AFFAIR | Shakespeare x Y/N
a/n: this is one of the four fanfictions written by yours truly and @oflethe during my community day stream (on June 5th, 2023, using the game frantic fanfic)
summary: shakespeare meet cute???
warnings: no editing in sight, sexual innuendos, and a really messed up plot
(each time there is a “-” there is a switched writer; it starts with lethe)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I woke up to my stupid alarm, in my stupid bed. I got out and stared at my lifeless blue eyes in the mirror. Hi, I'm Y/N. Just another girl in this G-dforsaken World. I put my long brown hair in a messy bun and changed into my Paramore tshirt and skinny black jeans. As I put on my non-broken in Dr Martens, my mum walked in.
"Y/N," she started, looking exhausted "you have a visitor."
B-but, who would want to see a mess like me?? As I walked down our villa's stairs I saw him -------------------- , standing there, a wolfish grin on his face.
"S-shakespeare?" I whispered, too taken aback by his molded back hair.
"Yes," he grunted sexually. "It's me. Your new family."
"That's right, Y/N." My mom yelled. "You're useless and not a part of my family anymore. Shakespeare is adopting you."
I was so scared I peed a little.
"Adopted? Me?"
"Let's go baby. You're like a midsummer's night dream or whatever."
Shakespeare took me to the carriage and threw all my bags in the back. I sat in the front seat, trying to ignore the fact that the horse in front of us was shitting like crazy.
"I hope I never see you again." My mom said and slammed the door behind herself.
"Time to go, Y/N. Your new life awaits." Shakespeare put a quill in the carriage's ignition, and we were off. To my new life. My new home. -------------------- To a new century.
He rode the carriage into a new old age, and I found myself standing in front of THE Globe Theatre.
"So," he startled me, "I suspect you'll be right at home playing with the boys."
Yeah, I prefered boys' company over other girls, since I'm not like them and all, but what did he mean??
I would find out soon that he meant to make me into his image. A girl that pretends to be a boy playing a girl on stage. I soon became the biggest actor his stage had ever seen, and soon, I became his biggest muse. His Cleopatra. His youmg Juliet to his old-ass Romeo. Anne Hathaway was no more, in the end it was me and him- my William, my Shakespeare.
Writeblr Intro
Hi everyone! I'm starting a new blog to chronicle my thoughts as I work on my current WIP. I've been on tumblr for a while but this particular blog is brand-spanking new. I'm really just doing this for me but I wouldn't mind making some writeblr friends to gush about our wips together. So without further ado...
My name is Kate (she/her) and I mostly write fantasy with the occasional sci-fi project on the side. I love epic high fantasy (in the vein of LotR or Wheel of Time) and YA fantasy romances equally.
Funny enough, my current project is none of those things. I thought I was writing a YA fantasy for the longest time but once I finished writing my first draft I realized I hadn't included a single fantastical element.
It's more like a YA twist on a Shakespeare comedy than anything else -- if I had to pick a genre. Something like Twelfth Night, Cymbeline, or As You Like It. It's got a young women running from an arranged marriage, a b-plot to prevent a war, forbidden love, mistaken identity hijinks, a forest setting, bandits, a fairy-tale High Medieval backdrop, and it wouldn't be truly like a Shakespeare comedy without cross-dressing and queer characters.
I have several other wips on the go but this is the one I am furthest along on. As of yesterday I was 10% of the way through my second draft!!
I won't be posting full chapters of the wip because I am hoping to query it one of these centuries... but I will definitely be posting about the process (the good, the funny, and the tufts of ripped out hair) and sharing my favourite lines.
I write each draft in one giant MS Word doc. My first draft for this wip clocked in at 112 572 words (163 pages in 11pt Times New Roman) but I am trying to cut it down to around 80 000 for the second draft -- a feat, seeing as I am a chronic over-writer.
I would love to chat with fellow writers, particularly anyone writing in a similar genre but sci-fi, fantasy, YA romance writers and anyone really --writer or not -- is welcome if you are interested in watching someone else go through the revision process of writing a novel, or if the concept itself intrigues you. I am also happy to answer questions about first drafts and writing in general.
I'm not as well-versed in Shakepeare as I pretend to be so any avid fans of his comedies who want to talk about them are most welcome too!!
hamlet but i haven't seen it (yet)
there's this guy named hamlet who's the prince of denmark
somethings foul in the state of denmark or something
hamlet's dad, the king, got killed before the play and hamlet suspects his uncle claudius (is that his name?)
claudius marries hamlet's mother and is now king (bit weird but okay)
hamlet doesnt like that
the ghost of hamlet's father appears to hamlet and tells him to kill his uncle in revenge
hamlet the master of indecisiveness™
to be or not to be
thats like about whether to act or not i think
hamlet is a college student so actually quite young (i think boy started to go to college at age 14 and hamlets probably around 16 but nobody's sure)
a phrase stuck in my brain is "hamlet the frat boy" but im pretty sure he's more of a theater kid
instead of killing his uncle hamlet stages a play similar to what he thinks transpired to watch how his uncle reacts to it
the lady doth protest too much, methinks
shakepeare does love to make his protagonists spiral into insanity
i heard hamlet is a story about grief and i also heard that it's like a mirror, what you see about hamlet says more about you that hamlet himself (but dont ask me to elaborate i am realising my brain retains information i have no clue how i got)
in the end almost everyone dies because of hamlet
hamlet stabs someone through the curtain i think its the father of ophelia (polonius or smth i dunno) cause he thinks is his uncle
im not sure why his uncle should be behind a curtain tho
hamlet randomly gets kidnapped by pirates but we never see it because shakespeare already new how expensive special effects are
i bet the pirates let hamlet go because he's a little bitch
hamlet is A LITTLE BITCH
i think in one scene he just tries to fluster ophelia (his not-quite-girlfriend) by turning everything she says into sexual innuendo (may i lay my head in your lap so on so on)
there's one scene with a grave digger whom hamlet asks for whom the grave is the man is digging and the man responds it is his own to which hamlet answers something along the lines of
one would thinks so for thou dost lie in it
great pun
ophelia actually manages to drown in a brook which is characterised by it's shallowness
its unclear whether she did it intentionally
there are some guys named rosencrantz und guildenstern (probably didnt spell that right) and i know nothing about them except that they die because of hamlet and for some reason they always get mentioned together which makes me think they are an item
many people die because of hamlet
also there's a skull
is that yorrick?
hamlet talks to it
david tennant got the role of hamlet because he randomly picked up a real human skull
hamlet dies (big surprise!)
there's a duel? and one of the sword's is poisoned and hamlet picks up the wrong one? is that with laertes? i know he dies, too
also there's horatio, everybody seems to like him so i tried to not mention him for as long as possible to annoy them (not really i just dont know much about him)
people think hes gay for hamlet
hes not nobility but wellspoken
something something sweet prince?
horatio does not die
he lives to tell the tale
which is somehow worse
while i know (claudius?) hamlet's uncle dies and thats kinda the point of hamlet's whole actions i do not actually know when or how he dies (but i know about the curtain stabbing, the brook and the duel, weird)
or is he the one in the duel?
i bet hamlet's mother dies too
i also dont know how hamlet dies, something with the duel and the poisoned sword i guess, i know he picked up the wrong sword but im not sure if the wrong one was that with poison or not
WHAT DOES THE PIRATE KIDNAPPING HAVE TO DO WITH EVERYTHING?
AND WAS HE REALLY SIXTEEN?
i am very confused about how much there is in my brain about the guy
i do think there must be more to horatio except 'gay for hamlet' but i dont know anything
rosencrantz und guildenstern sound like a comic relief duo who dont know what they're doing
something about mother and knowing about playing with her drapes... (is that from hamlet?)
im sure this is enough for now
please do tell me how wrong i am
also tell me if you know why i seem to know so much about this (even if it's not true)
yes, this was inspired by @weirdly-specific-but-ok 's good omens post and @hello-ello-ello 's post about macbeth
Hi, new mutual, I've recently been getting more into Rivamika, and I was wondering if you had any fic recommendations, preferably angst :) I actually recently started reading your fic, Clarity, so you'll probs be seeing a comment from me soon-ish on AO3, haha. I'm really loving it thus far!
Hi! And welcome to our lovely ship! Rivamika tends to get an unfair amount of hate so we are a very supportive community and take care of our own like Levi would.
Idk about angst (I enjoy it but It's not something I actively search) but either angsty, fluffy, smutty and/or funny, I'm proud to say we have a lot of wonderful writers around us! l can personally vouch for anything by our queen chaosisbeauty23; also onigiridorkk has lovely fics, esp. Microcosmos, The Perfect Brew and 104th's Top Cadet; MoraLeeWright is like the Shakepeare of Rivamika. My fave by her is Just until the Storm is Gone, and The Song Remains the Same is one of the most original rm fics I've read. Alienheartattack has a plethora of one-shots, my fave being To You, 20 Years From Now (and To All Of Us, From 2000 Years Ago, but that's not rivamika).
If I may interest you in some ongoing fics, hrarby's For You is definitely in the angsty side. She's got a beautiful prose, too. Also angsty is Byhimawari's Languishing. Agentwarbarbie's The Shadow of the Prince is a great royalty AU that'll have you holding your breath.
The Broken Doll is a masterpiece of platonic Levi/Mikasa; last but not least, if you really wanna bawl, Beloved Mother is a heart-gutting Levi centric, non-ship fic.
Last but not least, I'm absolutely chuffed you're enjoying Clarity! You can check the tag #clarity tea house for all the meta that I posted while I was still writing, as well as extras and related stuff.
Thank you SO much for this ask! You made my day! 🥰
PS- ETA: I totally forgot one of my favourites, Surviving Peace by die-forllex!
TOS season 3: subtext becomes text (part 2)
Continuation from this other post: https://www.tumblr.com/electronickingdomfox/705554052352770048/tos-season-3-subtext-becomes-text-part-1
Plato’s Stepchildren
This episode is kinky, in general, though I don’t think there’s much K/S in it. It contains, however, the first appearance of Shakepeare’s homoerotic sonnets in relation to Kirk. He’s forced to recite Sonnet LVII while crawling on the floor towards the Platonian lord: Parmen.
Tumblr media
The sonnet in question deals with the poet’s “slavery” under the love demands of a younger man. This is the full text (Kirk only recites up to fourth line, before being interrupted by McCoy):
Being your slave, what should I do but tend Upon the hours and times of your desire? I have no precious time at all to spend, Nor services to do, till you require. Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour Whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you. Nor think the bitterness of absence sour When you have bid your servant once adieu; Nor dare I question with my jealous thought Where you may be, or your affairs suppose, But like a sad slave, stay and think of nought, Save, where you are how happy you make those. So true a fool is love that in your will Though you do anything, he thinks no ill.
The sonnet was probably chosen because of its relation to slavery. But it’s an interesting choice nonetheless...
Wink of an Eye
Yet another episode in which Kirk is forced into a relationship with a woman, or isn’t really able to consent. I read somewhere that Fred Freiberger, producer of season 3 in place of Roddenberry, wanted more romance in the series. Though I can’t locate the exact source, so take it with a grain of salt. But anyway, there’s indeed quite a lot of love stories here, for several characters: Chekov (Spectre of the Gun), McCoy ( For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky), Scotty (The Lights of Zetar) and even a brief scene for Spock in The Cloud Minders (I’m not counting episodes in which Spock was just acting, or not being truly himself). For some of these characters, it’d be the first time they have a genuine romance in the series.
Did this mean more female love interests for Kirk as well? You know, since he’s supposed to be “space Casanova” according to some fans? Well, not really. There’s Rayna, of course. But season 1 alone had both Ruth and Edith. What happened instead was a dramatic increase of episodes in which Kirk is forced, or otherwise manipulated, into a relationship with a woman. So far, we’ve seen a marriage while under amnesia in The Paradise Syndrome, a forced kiss in Plato’s Stepchildren, and now a kidnapping in this episode. And we’re not even done yet: there’s still the love potion of Elaan of Troyius, Marta’s assault in Whom Gods Destroy, and a semi-forced situation in The Mark of Gideon.  To compare, there were only two episodes in the previous seasons, all together, in which I’d classify the “romance” as forced: Dagger of the Mind and A Private Little War.
What it’s interesting in this episode, in terms of Kirk/Spock, is the following scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Queen Deela links Kirk’s interest in Spock with “affection”. Affection, of course, can be just friendly affection... But this is not what she’s thinking about. For starters, she wants a demonstration of such affection, and it’s not friendship what she’s looking for. Deela’s interest in Kirk is explicitly sexual in nature (she needs him to beget children). And then there’s, of course, her lover Rael’s jealous reaction.
Moreover, this isn’t the last time a telepathic being reads into Kirk or Spock’s minds, and finds love in there. Because after this episode comes...
The Empath
A really lovely, heartwarming scene, in an otherwise dark episode filled with torture. Spock is looking at Kirk, while he rests after being tormented by their alien captors.
Tumblr media
This attracts immediately the attention of Gem, the empathic woman who can sense other people’s feelings, and she turns towards Spock.
Tumblr media
Finding himself under surveillance, Spock quickly averts his eyes, but Gem approaches him and touches his shoulder, to better feel his emotions. And whatever she feels, it must be something really beautiful, since she makes this expression (coupled with sweet music in the background):
Tumblr media
Gem can’t talk, but her face says it all. There’s also no dialogue in this scene, and yet it’s everything in the script. Could be friendship or loyalty what she’s sensing there? Could be... But Gem has been around Kirk, Spock and McCoy for a while at this point. Those kind of feelings shouldn’t surprise her anymore. Moreover, McCoy is right there, and he’s about to sacrifice himself for his friends. Yet she doesn’t turn towards McCoy. She must have sensed something new in Spock, a feeling she probably didn’t know till now. And I think it’s love.
Whom Gods Destroy
The second appearance of Shakepeare’s homoerotic sonnets, though this time, its relation with Kirk is weaker.
It’s actually Marta who starts reciting sonnet XVIII, till the fourth line. This is the full text:
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date; Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm'd; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
She’s interrupted, but then turns to Kirk and asks him how he liked it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, she knows you’re into this stuff, Kirk. Deela knew, Gem knew, and now Marta knows too. These guys are so obvious... They’re not fooling the ladies.
Requiem for Methuselah
And speaking of obvious, this episode is as subtle as a brick through a window (“como un elefante en una cacharrería”, as I’d say in my own language).
First there’s Kirk falling in love at first sight with an android woman, who talks about sciency stuff just like Spock, and also has problems dealing with her emotions (for another example of parallels between Spock and an android struggling with emotions, see Star Trek: The Motion Picture).
And of course, there’s the final scene:
MCCOY: Well, I guess that's all. I can tell Jim later or you can. Considering his opponent's longevity, truly an eternal triangle. You wouldn't understand that, would you, Spock? You see, I feel sorrier for you than I do for him because you'll never know the things that love can drive a man to. The ecstasies, the miseries, the broken rules, the desperate chances, the glorious failures, the glorious victories. All of these things you'll never know simply because the word love isn't written into your book. Goodnight, Spock. SPOCK: Goodnight, Doctor. MCCOY: I do wish he could forget her.
McCoy accuses Spock of being unable to feel love (specifically romantic love, since that’s what Kirk felt for Rayna). What does Spock do once McCoy leaves?
Tumblr media
Exactly. He mind-melds with a sleeping Kirk and makes him forget Rayna (coupled with romantic music in the background). Now, if it wasn’t for McCoy’s speech, we could assume that Spock was just trying to help his Captain, even if using some unorthodox methods. But McCoy’s speech changes everything. He just told the viewer that Spock is unable to feel something like romantic love. Those were harsh words. And now Spock proves to the viewer that McCoy is wrong, that he can, indeed, feel love.
Again, it’s all in the script. It’s so obvious, that even people you wouldn’t usually link with K/S shipping seem to have got it. For example, this is what Marcy Lafferty (married to Shatner from 1973 to 1996) said about it in an interview (Shatner: where no man..., 1979) :
Tumblr media
Turnabout Intruder
The final episode of TOS, and written by Roddenberry himself. Since it was the final episode (and probably everyone knew it at the time), it should have some grand plot, right? Something really glorious, and heroic, and epic. Maybe the Enterprise finally defeats the Klingons and Romulans, and achieves inter-planetary peace or something. Actually, the production team called this episode......... Captain Kirk: Space Queen.
Fuck yeah. Of course, the plot revolves around Kirk switching bodies with a crazed ex-girlfriend, who then proceeds to take hold of the Enterprise. But I wonder if, at some level, it was really about Shatner playing a woman inside a man’s body, or instead, playing a flamboyantly gay Kirk right under our noses. Specially since, while filming this episode, he changed a line out of nowhere to say “Spock, it’s always been you. Please say you love me too”. Was this finale a way for Roddenberry to give the middle-finger to the network that killed his show? Hard to know, and pure speculation on my part. But fun speculation nonetheless.
At the story level, there’s the scene where Kirk, inside Janice’s body, says that Spock is closer to the Captain than ANYBODY ELSE IN THE ENTIRE FREAKING UNIVERSE. And then Spock mind-melds with him. He didn’t make any mind-link with Kirk in previous seasons, but this is the fourth episode in which he melds with him in season 3. He got kind of an addiction to it. There’s also the moment where Spock leads Kirk, taking him by the wrist.
Tumblr media
The effect of all this is kind of mitigated by the fact that Kirk occupies a female body at the moment. So even if, for story purposes, is a rather gay scene, the 60′s viewer is still seeing an actor having a tender moment with an actress (which would be nothing new).
But there’s the other side, as well:
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s actually Janice but, from the audience point of view, what we’re seeing here is the Captain Kirk that we got used to for 79 episodes. Getting all lovey-dovey with a man (unfortunately not Spock), and seducing him to kill for his sake. Also, the guy doesn’t seem to mind much that Janice has turned into this hunk of a man. He’s only concerned because of the murderous plan. Now think, was it really necessary to make Janice’s accomplice her lover as well? She already had a love interest in Kirk, and in the episode’s beginning, she was complaining about how lonely she felt.
Well, that’s all I have to say about this subject for TOS season 3 (which was a lot). If you’ve made it through all this text, thank you very much. And I’d be glad to hear your opinions.
Coriolanus by William Shakespeare, Act 5, Scene 6 // Coriolanus (2011) dir. Ralph Fiennes
Top 10 Shakepeare deaths that are confessions of love if you want them to be
[ID: A clip from the film Coriolanus (2011). There is no sound. Coriolanus (Ralph Fiennes), and Aufiduis (Gerard Butler) face each other down at the end of the play. They are in modern military clothing, standing on an empty paved road. Aufiduis approaches and stabs a wounded Coriolanus with a hunting knife, killing him. Aufiduis hold Coriolanus to him gently, keeping their faces close together. Coriolanus stares at him with a peaceful, almost relieved expression as he expires. With a wounded, grief-stricken expression, Aufidius lowers Coriolanus gently to the ground, then kneels in shock over the dead body. The camera pulls out, there is a group of soldiers staring at the two. /end ID]
stratford on avon travelogue aka benny's really good super nice day (part 1 of 2)
IIIIIII decided to go to stratford on avon today bc i've been meaning to go for a while and I've got this week off (birthday tomorrowwwww) - cham was gonna come too but had a bit too much work so it was just me, and I was slightly apprehensive about that but i actually had an incredible day and I'm going to tell you all about it RIGHT NOW
I left the house at noonish, its a roughly 45min drive from worcester and the drive was actually really nice, all relatively fast b roads/country lanes. I didn't really have a plan for the day other than just walk around, maybe see some shakespeare shit, otherwise just see my little lizard brain took me, so I just set the sat nav for "stratford on avon" and set off. When i got to the town outskirts i immediately saw signs for anne hathaway's cottage so i was like "yeah aight" and turned off, went down some cute semi-rural residential streets and arrived in a nice green leafy neighbourhood with a nearly deserted car park (no bank holiday today in the uk, we have it next monday). I noticed the minimum stay was 3 hrs so i was like hmmmmm and then when i got to the cottage it turns out you can buy a ticket that gets you into all three shakespeare places (anne's cottage, his birthplace, his new place) so I was like hmmmmmmmmmmm *a plan is forming*.
Tumblr media
watch out 🐊
I wandered round the orchard/outsidey bits (a little sculpture/statue trail of shakepeare-y stuff) and did a very speedrun-y tour of the cottage itself - I wasn't super invested or bothered about Learning I just felt like being a tourist and it was honestly super fun to just be like no thanks i don't want any information :) i'll just walk around :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
falstaff's belley, also bees
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's nice she could afford such a cool place, she was good in interstellar
After maybe less than hour I emerged from ann hathaway's cottage and by that time the plan had cemented - I was going to go and see how many of shakespeare's three cribs I could see in a day. I didn't actually need to do this because the ticket is valid for a year but it felt like a fun little goal. I also noted there was a handy signposted route into the town centre so I opted to leave the car there and walk - I both did and didn't regret this decision later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The walk into town was mostly along a long straight boring road but I did see a cool graveyard and a euphemistically named "SCULPTORS" workshop not far away. The walk in total was probably about 15-20 mins but it felt a bit longer, i eventually got bored and wandered off down a side road and finally got spat out of the sleepy residential streets just in front of Holy Trinity church:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i didn't know that was what it was immediately, again fully did not plan or research anything beforehand, anyway it is apparently a Landmark so, great 👍)
From here it was a short walk along the river, and by that point i was falling slightly in love with the place already - the weather was just sunny enough, it wasn't too busy, people were boating on the river, there were swans and geese everywhere. After a few minutes I saw these and my original plan to visit some dead bloke's houses sort of got back burnered:
Tumblr media
When I saw the boats for hire sign my little lizard brain immediately decided it wanted nothing more in the whole wide world than to go on a little boat on the river avon. I thought "yeah aight" and wondered off to find the actual hire point, these were just moored here and the wasn't anyone actually around to hire them out to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
on the way i went past some big theatre place? i think it was something to with the dead bloke, idk i was thinking about boats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a couple more minutes of boat focused wandering brought me to the boathouse (on the right^) which was deserted except for the staff who were all sitting on the veranda eating hula hoops. they seemed mildly surprised that i wanted to hire a boat, and explained that they only electric motorboats for hire that day. I had already seen the sign advertising the option between analogue and electric and i was like "yeah aight", so i paid the man and hopped aboard. I was given a brief how-to, and here i should maybe explain I have not been on any kind of boat in a very long time, my experience extends to heavily supervised rowing on a canal as a kid and one (1) time having a brief go at the wheel of a motorboat on a scottish loch when i was 13ish. None of this really swayed or discouraged me however, so consumed was i with the lizard brain instruction to Go on A Boat. I gamely took in the safety briefing which amounted to lever forward go faster, lever back go slower/reverse, turn to wheel to steer, dont fall in (I'll try not to, i responded cheerily, like a real adult), and I was on my way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
aboard the good ship "number 27"
it took me a couple of minutes to get the hang of the steering, but its top speed wasn't too fast and it actually handled really nicely and responsively so the learning curve wasn't too steep, and pretty soon I was whirring happly along
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the return leg I was just working out how to correct after my big u turn (i only had the boat for 30 mins and was only allowed on a short section of the river) when i spotted something odd and brown on the near side of the riverbank and i was like, is that a fucking otter, and lads IT WAS AN OTTER
i look really unexcited here bc i'm trying operate a phone camera at the same time as controlling an unfamiliar vehicle, and trying not to plough said vehicle into said otter. the otter looks really unexcited here bc im just a twat in a boat and it sees those all the time.
The rest of my journey was uneventful but very pleasant, once i got the hang it was a very relaxing and centering activity and i will definitely be back. I brought the boat back right side up and with me still dry and in it, which the dudes at the boat hire seemed pretty happy about, and they were even happier when i showed them the video of the otter.
From here I sort of just wandered around a bit more? By now it was approaching 4 o'clock and S on A is apparently one of those towns where everything shuts down from like 4 to 5, so it was pretty quiet. I wandered up the high street, wandered into a hi fi store, gawked at some turntables, wandered into a weird little "vintage store", took a picture of a tuba, left, wandered around a bit more, and then walked past a japanese restaurant and stopped and was like hmmmmmmmm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus toilet selfie bc i was feeling myself this day.
It wasn't opening until 5 but i now had a plan formed (completely forgotten about the dead guy's digs by now). I wandered back towards the river, found a gelato place, got gelato (elderflower, battenberg and salted caramel, don't question me), and went and ate the gelato with my legs dangling off the steps by the river OH NO I HIT THE IMAGE LIMIT OK PART 1 OF 2 I GUESS
Architectural Finds, 06/24/2023
My walk today was a brief 20 minutes, I was meeting up with a friend from upstate for some chai who had come down the night before to stay with some other friends. We met up at the Chai Spot on Mott St. (which I definitely now recommend) and we relaxed in their backroom lounge with our chai's for 45 min or so. She eventually had to leave to catch her bus back upstate & I walked her to the subway stairs hugged her and said goodbye. Feeling the warm weather on my skin and the caffeine in my veins I decided to walk up Broadway, here were some of the architectural highlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This cute turret room on the top of the building on the NE corner of Bleecker & Broadway. Doing the smallest ammount of googling I am finding out this was Peter Venkman's (Bill Murray) apartment in Ghostbusters 2???? ok.
It just looks like it would be such a whimsical little tower to hang your hair from, idk.
Building Facts: Built in 1891 as the Manhattan Savings Institution, also known as Bleecker Tower. Architect Stephen Decatur Hatch.
Built in the Romanesque Revival style with arches and ornaments, as well as the red sandstone and signature rough cut stone of this style on the base of the building (definitely why it caught my eye, I love Richardson Romanesque/romanesque revival).
The tower on top eludes my brief internet search, but if anyone has pictures of the inside please direct them to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up we have this lil copper cutie who looks like it just got a face lift judging by the shiny copper facade on top. It is currently a FootLocker so hopefully they're treating her nice.
Building Facts: (obv) Built in 1889 by Architect Alfred Zucker.
The menacing gargoyles are cute.
(maybe more of an opinion than a fact, but) there used to be a bookstore called Shakepeare's on the bottom floor and the top floors were 1-per-floor studio spaces for artists to live/work in, & I wish that was the case today, not footlocker and high rent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVING ON, we've got this pair of cuties. Don't they look like the best of friends holding hands ready to face the world side by side? These guys are 734 (left) and 732 (right) Broadway.
734: Built in 1872 by Architects David & John Jardine in Cast-Iron Neo-Grec style. Until ~2015, the facade had become a rusted brown/black mess until they cleaned and repainted it.
732: Built in 1854 by unknown.
This little building has a complicated past but ill try and summarize the small dig I just did on it. Originally it was a 3.5 peaked-roof building as a set of 3 houses for wealthy sisters (daughters of John Mason) from 732-736 designed by an undocumented architect. It underwent large renovations twice in its life, and one small renovation adding the Treffurth's sign on the roof cornice. The first renovation happened in 1885 by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (god write a romance novel already would you) and allowed the introduction of E. A. Mac's bookstore to take the place of the earlier saloon on the bottom floor. It was then renovated in 1900 by Bruno W. Berger to the Cast-Iron more or less Renaissance Revival facade we see today.
-
Im going to keep these next ones brief because I'm beginning to lose steam :)
Tumblr media
1 Astor Place
Built in 1883 by Architects Starkweather & Gibbs (they also designed the Potter Building). Brick & Terracotta above Cast-Iron ground floor facade.
Originally it was used as a hotel and boarding house with ground floor stores. The harsh vertical motifs on the exterior caught my eye, and I was drawn in even more by the harmony of the design elements and color choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 Astor Place aka 444 Lafayette St
Built in 1876 by Architect Griffith Thomas to the same owner as the above building, Orlando B. Potter, who seemed to have impeccable taste in architecture.
I love the ornate implementation of the painted white Cast-Iron in the arches and pillar ornaments on this one. As well as the eye-popping contrast of the white paint on dark red brick, kind of a juxtaposed take on themes seen in the building above with the way the red and black elements seem to blend in together in harmony.
Tumblr media
21 Astor Place aka Clinton Hall
Built in 1891 by George E. Harney.
Originally a Library for the New York Mercantile Library. I love the classic industrial look its such a strong look while they still tried to give elements of the facade some artistic nuance like in the arched windows and dark banding.
Tumblr media
Only Caught the side of this Collonade building but doing more research on it, it's owned by the Blue Man Group????
Built 1831 by Seth Greer and historically home to family member's of the Astor & Vanderbilt families, it is the oldest building I took note of today.
Tumblr media
And of course, how could I not be drawn into the Cooper Union Foundation building's charm. It stands seemingly so alone in the heart of Manhattan, close to a modern miracle.
Built in 1859 by Frederick A. Peterson in the (what I'm finding now to be called) Rundbogenstil German neo-Romanesque style.
I didn't realize it at the time but this picture also seems to be the back of the building. Still just such ornate and well-balanced design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS: This house on top of this building and the cute lil mansard moment next to it, which I searched and searched for but I cant seem to remember where it is.
Edit: I found it, there were street signs in the picture whoops. The one with the cottage is 203 E 13th Street also known as Pear Tree Place. And the little guy with the mansard roof is 109 3rd ave, both of them resting above Kiehls 3rd ave.
Tumblr media
DISHONORABLE MENTIONS: This NYU Alumni building. Who designed you, they should be ashamed. What is going on with your offset, unbalanced terraces in the back? Awful. What was the point of all of these different colored brick patches?? Uncomfortable, awful. It looks like a neutral-toned Duplo set.
Built in 1986 and I cant even find the architect so you know they weren't very proud of it.
The Proper Grave for a Bard
I press the last ‘I love you’ in the middle of Shakepeare’s sonnets. In the summer, I comb through the pages searching for the shadow of your smile, and find it near Sonnet 18. Our conversations echo from between the lines and the baritone rumble of your voice vibrates through the book to my spine. I keep the past here. Let your ghost hide in the dog-eared stages and I pry it open to…
I'm so glad Chapter 7 is getting the reception I hoped it would get!!! It wasn't in my original outline but I got closer and closer to Night 4 and I was like huh. Okay, um. I can't write a whole chapter of Vanessa cranking springlocks for 6 hours. So everyone had to listen to be yap about Vanessa's tragic backstory for 8k words *smiles serenely* Fuck Romeo and Juliet, I killed Shakepeare on his own stage and drank his poison willingly.
(Also thank you, i do consider myself a righter. of Scott Cawthon's wrongs. Teehee.)
This Robert Pattinson quote on relationships in the public eye is really interesting and I think relevant to discussion.
“If you let people in, it devalues what love is. If a stranger on the street asked you about your relationship, you’d think it extremely rude. If you put up a wall it ends up better. I can’t understand how someone can walk down the street holding hands, and it’s the same as when I do it and a hundred people are taking your photo. The line between when you’re performing and when you’re not will eventually get washed away and you’ll go completely mad.”
Especially the part about just living your life but it feels like you’re performing. I’d love to hear your thoughts about it!
Near the beginning of the play, Gertrude tells Hamlet to take off his emo clothes and move past the dead daddy moping, and Hamlet says
“I have that within which passeth show.”
He means “I have something inside that goes beyond what I’m able to perform with my clothes and sad face etc,” but then the rest of the play is him trying to figure out what that “something” is and (spoiler!) he dies and never figures it out.
So this is a common theme in Shakepeare, and one of my professors used say that Shakespeare was always opposing two “theories of man.” The first was a walnut theory, which held that each of us has an outer shell that we show to the world but inside we have a nut (lol stop😅), which is our true self. The second was an onion theory, according to which we have different personas that we perform depending on the situation, and we can keep peeling them back like layers of an onion, but when we get to the last layer we peel it back—and there’s nothing there.
So this was a complete tangent (a tangent and a half!) but this idea “the line between when you’re performing and not” is sort of interesting on that philosophical level, so you’re welcome, I guess lol
But here’s how it’s useful for us: it sounds like Robert wants to believe that love is a walnut, but truly believes that it’s an onion, suscepible to being peeled away in the performance of everything. Tom and Zendaya seem like walnut folks to me.
The most beautiful LP video clips
Laura has always had an eye for design and beauty and she has put a great deal of effort on her video clips over the years and thought carefully the right directors to build the visual image for her singles. This list may not be the best of LP songs but definitely one of the most beautiful LP music scenese for sure. Which one you love the most?
Il coraggio di andare / El valor de seguir adelante
Tumblr media
Location: Emiglia-Romagna, Italy
The first official duet from Laura and her long time collaborator and friend Biagio Antonacci, released along with Fatti Sentire Ancora late in 2019. They’re located in this beautiful, atmospheric house together and separate. Biagio appears in one black and white suit when Laura wears nude coloured sparkling gown and see-through black one.The world of colours in here are very well balanced and harmonic together with scenery of Emiglia-Romagna in the fall.
The most memorable scene is where Biagio plays the piano where Laura bathes.
The video’s inspiration comes from the famous painting Ophelia by British artist Sir John Everett Millais. This was the famous character from Shakepeare’s Hamlet who is singing before she drowns in a river in Denmark.
Director : Gaetano Morbioli
Views : over 42 millions together ITA + ES
Album: Fatti sentire ancora / Hazte sentir más (2018)
La soluzione / La solucíon with Carlos Rivera
Tumblr media
Location: New York, US
The video builds up as Laura is lying in a bed like structure with curtains, light around her. Later on it’s revelealed to be womb like place where she’s floating in the air. She’s wearing a nude body and white scarves and strings.  The video lightened up so much the song which originally I didn’t care too much for.
The single was later on released in Spanish with Carlos Rivera.
Director:  Gaetano Morbioli
Views: Almost 50 million together ITA + ES
Album: Fatti sentire / Hazte sentir (2018)
Non é detto / Nadie ha dicho
youtube
Location: Maratea, Italy
We see Laura together with Italian actor Cristiano Caccamo telling the story of a couple that have grown apart. They’re being shown together sitting on a table and lying on a bed and also separately - everything takes place on the black beach of Maratea is half of this video’s beauty.
The details are very telling and precise : the mirrors, the boat where Laura is singing on a dry land, the postures both Laura and Caccamo have.
However I do find the two don’t look at the same age and Caccamo looks like a teenager when Laura as an adult woman (not 44-year old though!). I believe the pictures of different scenes of the video are meant being as transitional but they feel a bit unnecessary. Anyway this probably my favourite LP music video of all time!
Director:  Gaetano Morbioli
Views: Over 75 million views together ITA + ES
Album: Fatti sentire / Hazte sentir (2018)
Sono solo nuvole / Solo nubes
Album: Inedito / Inédito (2011)
Prendo te
Released as a bonus track for Resta in ascolto / Escucha and only in Italian this song was never really a single but a deeply personal song for Laura as she wrote it to her sister’s wedding. The song appeared later on Laura’s Greatest Hits collection.
Album: Bonus track for Resta in ascolto / Escucha (2004)
