To illustrate this post by @mayahawkse I would like to visualize to you the difference:
A post in 2023:
Tumblr media
A post in 2014:
Tumblr media
A zoom out of the same post:
Tumblr media
This is what a community looks like.
See how in 2023 almost all of the reblogs come from the OP, from their few hours/days in the tag search. Meanwhile in 2014 the % of reblogs from OP is insignificant, because most of the reblogs come from the reblogs within the fandom, within the micro-communities formed there. You didn't need to rely on tags, or search, or being featured. Because the community took care of you, made sure to pass the work between themselves and onto their blog and exposed their followers to it. It kept works alive for years.
It's not JUST the reblog/like ratio that causing this issue, it's the type of interaction people have. They're content with scrolling and liking the search engine, instead of actually having a reblogging relationship with other blogs in their community.
Anyways, if you want to see more content you like, the only true way to make it happen is to reblog it. Likes do not forward content in no way but making OP feel nice. Reblogs on the other hand make content eternal. They make it relevant, they make it exist outside of a fickle tumblr search that hardly works on the best of days.
If you want more of something, reblog it.

James Somerton and the Vampire Chronicles
Ok last thing about this whole James Somerton situation before watching the hbommerguy video.
James Somerton made several videos in which he mentions interview with the vampire and they always rubbed me the wrong way. In the last one, a video of which im still trying to figure out the point, he spends about 20 min trying to tell us that Anne Rice was the first person the portray the vampire as sexy. Which is not true, for example 'The vampire lovers' was made in 1970 and 'The kiss of the vampire' in 1963 (and then i havent even talked about literature). It is not Anne Rice's original idea that vampires can be sexy. But the portrayals of sexy vampires before 1975 were mostly women being sexy, and i guess that doesn't count for him.
The only other things he could talk about was how sexy the main characters are (in a way that made me honestly uncomfortable because he seemed to be undermining the point of the scenes and the show in general) and to give us a general summary of the show he spends ten minutes on.
He goes into the attractiveness of lestat in the book and briefly the show but he goes into no further depth beyond that. And there is a lot to say about attraction in the vampire chronicles beyond that!! Why do we get a ten minute summary of the show instead, where nothing is mentioned to further your point?
Don't get me wrong, Interview with the Vampire is my current hyperfixation and i love hearing about it. But i already knew the plot of the show and you had a point to make, right?? (the point never gets made)
When watching the video back when he posted it i was pretty disappointed that he went into so little depth regarding the show, certainly after the analyses i had already read about it, but now i'm honestly relieved. No doubt he would have directly stolen from our amazing meta creators and analysts in this fandom.
There are more things i can talk about.
His endless praise of Anne Rice as the saviour of all gay people while every other woman (including queer women) is bad for liking and creating content about gay men. (heartstopper, fanfiction, etc.)
How he doesn't mention the racism present in the books while only sparing a sentence or two talking about the handeling of racism in the show. And with that taking a firmly white lens stating that Lestat releases Louis from the shackles of humanity and therefore racism and homophobia. Which, when you watch the show, is obviously not what actually happens. Louis is still factually a black man in the Jim Crow south, he just also has to kill people now and can't talk to his family. Not crazy he doesn't take to vampirism so easily. But James seems to agree with Lestat that he should get over it and have fun.
He does not talk about any of the misogyny present in the books, just not at all. I don't remember him talking about the women in the books or the show at all either...
Now i'm going back to real life where people disappoint me far less
here 5 youtubers that source their content

How To Interact With Beta Readers - for Fanfic Authors
I wanted to make posts both for fic authors and beta readers, because I realized in several recent interactions that some helpful unwritten rules of fandom seem to have become lost to people who are new to it.
This isn't meant to be a call-out post against anyone to say 'you did it wrong!' (really, how could anyone be mad if you just didn't know any better), and there aren't even any definite rules for anything - but I just thought these things might be nice to know and helpful to share around. This first part will be @ the authors, the second part is @ the betas.
Asking for a beta reader
When you want someone to look through your fic, whether you ask in a tumblr post, @/helper in a discord server, in the notes of an already posted work or anywhere else, it's important to state both a) what the work that you want betad is and b) what you want from a beta reader.
The facts about the story.
The first most important facts about the story are a) length (in wordcount, as that is the most-used measurement for fanfiction - you can see it below the tags of an ao3 draft, or at the bottom left of a Word document), and b) rating and warnings. No, please don't just ask 'i have a fic for xy ship to beta' - that's nice information, but not helpful for someone who needs to decide whether they a) have the time to work on the length of fic and b) are willing to be confronted with the kind of content you have written.
In addition to that, you should of course also write what fandom, characters and dynamic it is about, because most beta readers are only willing to beta stories they would also usually read for fun. To make sure that the right people find the ask for a beta reader, you best target the post to them, so tag a tumblr post with the fandom and ship etc, and on discord share the request in a server or channel for the fandom, not an unrelated one.
What format is the draft in?
A word document you can send them via e-mail, a copy-pasted text in a direct message, link access to a google docs? Not everyone is comfortable with all of these methods, and you need to figure out one that works for the both of you.
Also, do you want the changes made directly in the text, in comment functions of the document, or as messages to you? If for example you send someone a Word document, and don't want them to change anything directly in your text, but they aren't comfortable working with the comment function there and end up writing you separate messages telling you what page and line the edits are one, that's going to be a lot more work for you to look through than you might have liked, so make sure to communicate it all beforehand and figure out a way that works properly for everyone.
What do you want from your beta?
'Well, to look over the story, duh?' but it's not that easy. Do you want the beta to:
- Only check for spelling and grammar mistakes in comments next to the text, No other suggestions at all because they would make you feel bad about your work/you don't have the time or want to spend the time on editing anything but honest mistakes/ any other reason?
- Grammar and spelling checks but also suggestions for word flow, repetitive words and phrases that could be changed and stylistic things like adding paragraph breaks (which are always nice to have for mobile reading)?
- [same as above] and also point out possible logic flaws and places where you might want to move a scene forward or back, or suggestions to things you could add to the story, with explanations as to why?
- [same as above] and also give suggestions for text you could cut that is unnecessary to the story or interrupting the flow of a scene in the opinion of your beta reader?
- Include nice messages as to what the beta liked best of the fic, or stay completely objective?
- Point out things they subjectively didn't like and would change about the story if they wrote it themselves, or not?
- Make corrections directly in the story, so afterwards you barely need to look at it anymore before you can publish it, or only give suggestions in comments or messages?
All of these are things some people welcome and others find incredibly annoying and/or hurtful! So make sure to communicate exactly what you are looking for. You don't have to do so in your initial public request, but once you have found a potential beta, you should text them the details before giving them access to your fic.
Do not be afraid of cancelling on a beta if you don't think it is going to work out! Whether because they aren't comfortable using the format you like to use, are a language teacher who can't stop correcting the long sentences you choose to keep as a stylistic choice, or just someone you don't vibe with, whether it's before or after they have started beta reading - be kind, but let them know that it just isn't working out, and that you would rather stop now before either of you wastes any more time and effort. If they want you to, you can tell them what you would have liked them to do differently, but don't ask someone to change how they are, and don't give unsolicited criticism, no, not even to a beta reader.
Decide on a time-frame
When are you going to send them the fic? Chapter by chapter over the next days, or the entire work? When do you want or need the work to be beta read? Is it for a challenge or gift exchange and needs to be finished on the same day, or can they wait for the weekend? Even if you don't have a specific deadline, when do you want them to send it back at the latest?
Working with a beta reader
After - or, if you are in for example a google docs at the same time, while - your beta reader does the corrections, you should look at them and decide which corrections you want to keep, and which to disregard. This is entirely your decision, it is your story, you don't need to feel bad if you don't take all of the suggestions for your work, even if you end up only correcting the spelling mistakes and ignoring everything else, it's your decision and this is fine.
If your beta gave suggestions for additional scenes or sentence changes, you can let them know once you have new text for them to correct, but keep in mind that they might no longer have time or energy to beta now, and don't be disappointed if they tell you this or don't reply. They already helped you, and you can always look for a new beta if you feel that your story still needs it.
Crediting your beta reader
Where are you uploading your fic, and how does your beta reader want to be credited? You best talk about this beforehand as well, as some betas only want to work on something when they will get the credit on a platform they are also on.
When posting on tumblr, it is usually expected to @ the person who helped you and write their url or tracked tag in the #s as well, but make sure to ask beforehand, as maybe they don't want other people to know they beta because they don't want to get swamped in work requests/ they don't want their url associated with for example explicit work/ they want you to tag a sideblog for the fandom instead of their main url.
On ao3, you can link to another author's dashboard or profile page (ask which one they prefer) in the notes by first going to the work text - rich text, writing their name, clicking the link symbol, pasting the url, going back to HTML text and cut-pasting the code to the note you want to have it in. You can do the prep work in a new work instead of your actual draft so you won't accidentally cut any of the work text. Again, ask the person beforehand whether they want to be linked there, or just want a nickname or their tumblr url credited.
You can also gift people works on ao3, and while this is in no way a requirement and most beta readers won't ask for it, just about everyone is happy to receive ao3 gifts! You can ask them beforehand if they want that, but as people can accept and refuse gifts on ao3 themselves, you can also let it be a surprise.
If your beta put a lot of work into your fic and wrote parts of it themselves, you can also make them a co-creator of the work on ao3, but only do this if you know and trust the person, as they will gain access to the fic and will be able to edit everything just like you.
Let me know if I missed anything, and I will update the post!
Tips for beta-readers themselves here!

apparently this must be said again, because assholes in fandom spaces are acting up again and need to be put in their place:
FAN CONTENT CREATORS DON'T OWE YOU SHIT.
you don't deserve the content you get. you aren't entitled to anything. just because someone draws or writes or whatevers for a fandom, doesn't mean you have the right to harass them if you don't personally like their shit.
this is common fucking knowledge and somehow it continues to elude peoples' brains because they've got such a privileged fucking mindset. fan artists, writers, editors, etc. are still people. unless you're explicitly paying them for their work, they don't owe you anything. their free work is what they want to create and you have absolutely zero authority over it. (and you know what? a fan creator can still deny your commission request for example, if you're being insufferable towards them. you are not immune to consequences.)
do you know how fucking hard it is to create content? that shit is difficult as hell. why do i know? because i'm a fan artist, and while there are plenty of amazing people who support me, there are also plenty of dickwads who believe that making art is as easy as breathing. fucking no it's not, you goddamn fucking idiot, and any artist would be well-aware of how genuinely frustrating creating content is.
art, writing, video editing, etc. etc. etc. even fucking cosplaying because people love to shit on that, are all extremely challenging hobbies. in fact, all creative pursuits are harder than they look. like every other hobby or talent or even just pastime, it requires hard work, dedication, and passion to get good. and guess what? a fan artist, author, editor, cosplayer, or whatever other fandom-related thing under the sun, spends just as much time, perhaps even more on that craft as any creative outside of fandom spaces.
but fan content creators are seen as expendable for some fucking reason. maybe it's because everyone is so used to seeing fan content, that they can suddenly afford to be picky. whatever it is, creators get so little respect over their own work nowadays and it's fucking infuriating.
want some fucking examples? i'll give you some fucking examples.
artists have their fan art stolen every fucking day and reposted or used under some reposter's user, like they fucking made it. oftentimes the original artist isn't asked for permission or even credited, which is the bare fucking minimum.
when artists fight back about 1., they can very possibly be attacked for standing up for themselves. repliers can say shit like "the art wasn't that good anyway" "stop throwing a fit" and "nobody cares" when the artist wants as little as to be respected of their wishes. (hey, did you know that removing content on your page that you stole doesn't hurt you in the slightest, but an artist having their art stolen hurts them infinitely more?)
fanfiction authors are always at risk of some "i deserve everything" reader going into the comments and typing some bullshit like "i hated this fic", "why won't you update the next chapter i've been waiting for x amount of time" and just overall being an asshole about something you absolutely 100% are not entitled to. fuck off, that author isn't writing specifically tailored to your interests, bitchass.
cosplayers are constantly flamed for "not looking like the character" and thus their cosplay is ugly or they're a ~cringe~ cosplayer. holy fucking shit have you tried cosplaying before? do you know how difficult and expensive cosplays can get, as well as how challenging it can be to get a good photo? cosplayers don't work so fucking hard on their craft just to get shat on by losers who don't know the first thing behind costuming, let's get that fucking straight.
video editing is hard and time consuming. i know that from firsthand experience. stop clowning on people because they want to see their favorite characters move in fun ways. get a goddamn hobby.
fan creators are usually taken less seriously on the internet because their work involves characters that already exist. "they don't make original characters, they're not creative enough!!!" entitled fucktards jeer without realizing that it's hard as balls to get the internet to care about a creator's characters or story.
and hey! even if a content creator spent like five minutes max on their fan content of the day, even if a content creator just started and so their work is far from the quality they desire, or hell even if they're really only just making fan content as a way to wind down and as nothing serious, that still doesn't give you the right to be a dick! fan content creators don't need to pass some goddamn threshold like that shit is objective for you to respect what they do.
you don't have to like everything a creator makes or does. that's fine because nobody is expected to like everything. maybe an artist draws something you really like but then another day draws something you don't. but the difference between being decent and being a bitch is ~keeping that opinion to yourself~
fan creators don't want to listen to your petty complaints. they don't sit at their screens all day just begging someone to be a jerk to work that they've created with their own heart and soul. if you don't like it, then don't engage with it. it's really that easy.
we're not obligated to please you. we make free content and post it online because we want to. you really dislike something that much? then fucking hell, make the shit yourself. then you'll know just how hard it is to churn out content you're satisfied with at a frequent pace.
and if you still don't get it, somehow, and you still think you're allowed to be an asshole on the internet, entitled to content online despite doing jackshit to deserve it, then do everyone a favor: leave the fucking fandom you're in and never come back.

Hi ever! Any tips on making friends in the zk community? I think everyone is so sweet but I'm really shy + I don't write or draw so I mostly reblog other artists but I really want to befriend some people in the fandom :(
Hi, sweet anon!
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I wanted to have a coherent answer for you, so I took a while to think about it.
You're right! This is a fandom full of really wonderful people. As a shy person, I know how hard it is to reach out and make friends. There was a decent amount of time when I first started this blog where I only reached out to people on anon because I was nervous about how I would be welcomed into the fandom. (Honestly, I still carry that anxiety with me and frequently consider bowing out of the fandom altogether. I've never done well socially and stepping away silently whether in person or online is how I cope.) Sometimes I still reach out on anon when I'm interacting with someone new. It's a good way to get comfortable with people if you're shy. (Also, I firmly believe the way people act on anon or talk to their anons says a lot about them. So this gives me a good way to read vibes.)
I don't think you need to be a creator in order to form valuable connections within the fandom. There are a lot of Zutarians who just enjoy asking others about headcanons or talking about the show itself! Fandom isn't all about creating material, it's about appreciating what you love with people who also love that thing. It's 100% cool to just hang around and gush about what you love. That's why we're all here!
I think some good ways to start making friends in the fandom include, but aren't limited to, the following:
1. Participate in ask games! We all like to get to know one another here, and it's easy to pop in on or off anon to ask a question of someone you'd like to talk to. Ask games can be great conversation starters.
2. Post in the comments when you reblog someone's work. This is something that I would like to do more of myself. I know that a lot of us comment in the tags when we reblog, but sometimes posting my love in the tags in hard because they're not easy to edit. If you like something someone drew or wrote, don't be afraid to hit the comment button after you hit reblog! It's like a little, personalized message to the creator and I guarantee it will make them smile! You'll probably even get a reply out of it!
3. Don't be afraid to come off anon. It's totally okay to use it. Especially if it makes you comfortable. Like I said, I still use it from time to time. But test out coming off anon with someone you're feeling comfortable with! Chances are, you might get some new followers out of it and you'll also probably make a new friend. I for one love when I see new names pop up in my ask box. And when they start to show up over and over, that's when I get really excited!
4. Don't underestimate the power of what reblogging does. I follow a lot of blogs who only hit reblog on stuff, but it fuels a lot of my dash! I treasure those users! I get a lot of new content on my dash because of them. It helps things feel fresh. So even if you're just hitting reblog, you're still contributing to someone's blog somewhere.
5. Try out DMing a user you'd like to get to know better! Ask them a question about their art or their writing or what they like about X character or Y episode. You can test this out with me if you'd like to. Or, if you're nervous about initiating that, you can drop your @ in my ask box (I won't share it with anyone) and I'll hop over to your DMs to chat! (If that still makes you feel nervous, we can just chat through anon asks until you feel better about it.)
6. Don't be upset if someone doesn't respond right away--or at all. I, for one, log out of Tumblr and AO3 on the weekend in order to spend time with my loved ones and live my life (this also helps me maintain a healthy balance of fandom in my life). So chances are you won't see a response from me at that time. There are people I've tried interacting with both on and off anon who just never responded. And while that's rough for someone who's shy, I have to remind myself that sometimes peoples' vibes just don't mesh (or maybe those blogs are dormant and I just wasn't aware) and that's okay. Try again with someone new when you feel ready!
I know a lot of these suggestions can feel intimidating. It's like I said, though, if you can find a Zutarian you feel comfortable with, then give it a shot. I'm always here if you'd like to start with me! I can also point you towards some more wonderful, welcoming people (provided they're cool with that--I'd check with them before sharing their usernames).
Also! One last tip:
6. Don't feel like you need to interact with a lot of people in order to have a good fandom experience. I have a little bubble of people that I'm comfortable with and that makes my experience better because I know what I'm welcoming into my space. It's like making friends in real life. You don't need to have a ton in order to have a good time. Be picky. Find people who give off the right vibes for you. You'll have a lot more fun that way!
Just remember: We're all here to nerd out about the same stuff. 😉

I’m so sorry for posting so many opinions and thoughts today. It’s just that I have free time, and I’ve been thinking about this ios update a lot and going through a lot of other blogs that have made posts with their own opinions (better opinions than mine tbh). And this is really just more of a rant that doesn’t make sense but that I needed to get out for my own sake
So, there’s these “alternatives” to tumblr that have been created or have been around as long as tumblr has been around, too. And they get brought up whenever there’s some generally agreed upon bad update. We all know them. We all see them. There’s never really any true mass exodus to just one.
And what bothers me, in my most recent to look for some other fandom places to gather (not to abandon tumblr for, just for another place that would suit other needs), is that popular tumblr blogs will get asked about them. And I’ve seen popular tumblr blogs just completely trash another site. They talk about the negatives, how user engagement isn’t the same, how the staff had some hiccups with codes or TOS, how there’s glaring problems that always end up a low priority, and how there’s just no one using these other sites.
The thing is. Tumblr works well for these blogs. Their posts get circulated, their content is at the top of searches and tags, they have large followings. And that’s not bad. It’s not bad that there’s popular blogs on Tumblr. And if you do have a website you’re popular on, why would you move to another?
But then the counter point is also, if you’ve maintained popularity on Tumblr thus far, are you fully grasping the extent that other creators need different spaces?
Tumblr has worked so well for so many years because the features have worked for everyone. No word limits, easy to use image uploading, links, etc. That doesn’t mean that other websites don’t have anything to offer.
And I’m not going to pretend like tumblr blogs have any major influence over their followers like you see on other social media sites, but I am a bit bothered by the possibility that there’s people who could really benefit from finding another space to go to but who don’t go seeking them out because This Person Who Knows Things said that they’re not worth it.
What it really comes down to is what experience you’re looking for. I know this recent news isn’t really all about fandoms and rather more about major corporations, but it does bring up a good discussion of where will fans go when they just want to have fun. And we’re allowed to be worried about big world consequences at the same time we’re worried about finding fics.
If you’ve found your audience on here, of course you’re not going to spend time on other sites. But some people just want to interact in small community circles. Some people want group chats like discord. Some people want something more lowkey but still tight-knit like dreamwidth. Some people need more privacy than tumblr allows. Some people want more organization so they can post their fics and meta and have it all be able to be linked together with tags that work.
Everyone is going to have different needs and while some websites can have major red flags and should really be avoided, there’s a lot of legitimate places people can go.
When people talk about what the next tumblr is going to be for fan spaces, I almost hope that there isn’t going to be one. I hope that everyone finds the spaces they need and can have great experiences on all of them--no matter how many or how few they post across.

🔥 any dishonored thing of ur choosing -deathoftheoutsider
wah okay!! i will talk a bit about the outsider and void then..i dont really wanna frame it as a Hot Take bc i have no interest in starting shit or whatever like ill interact with whatever i want to in this fandom and ignore the rest and everyone else is free to do the same but.
I do not think The Outsider is a “character” in the conventional sense, much less that it does his character or the allegory he wields any justice to be shipped with anyone in the series (at least without seriously considering the implications and framing it in a way that completes the allegory. more on this later)
the outsider and his void are an allegory for Otherness; i’m namely gonna frame it as queerness and neurodiversity, but really anything could fit as long as it’s about you feeling seen as a marginalized and othered person. he is written to represent this allegory, not to be a person with a satisfying narrative arc or dimensions. this is why some people feel that he lacks depth-- he’s not supposed to have depth compared to others in the series, he’s mostly a vehicle for what he represents, and is supposed to be easy to identify with or recognize.
he was born to a life of hardship, suffered at the hands of the rich and powerful, was ignored, cast out, etc. etc. a familiar story. poor, queer, nd, really whatever you wanna frame it as. he was a nobody outcast. in comes the envisioned, they pick him to serve as their martyr and idol without his permission. he then had his name cut away and forgotten, and was thrust onto a pedestal to spend the rest of eternity being worshipped by other outcasts who had suffered at the same hands he had. he has something greatly in common with those who worship him, including the very people who stripped his mortality from him in the first place, but because of this shared hardship (and nothing else), his own autonomous personhood was disregarded completely in favor of The Community needing someone Just Like Them to idolize. if this sounds familiar, that’s because it should!!
his humanity was taken from him, and in his place, an idol was created. his human body is frozen in stone in the center of the void-- retired. out of commission. no longer needed. he was immortalized, transcended. this is traditionally desired, although dishonored is trying to convince you that it is not actually desirable. in the age of internet content creation, you can be immortalized without even being present, without knowing about it. you become what you can do for other people, and what you cannot. people fall in love with an idea of you, the idea of you being like them, and other people come to hate you deeply without even knowing you. people came to hate the outsider more deeply than he ever had been when he was human-- he wasn’t seen when he was human. a pedestal only helps you to be seen. the outsider had the choice made for him to achieve immortality in exchange for the simple joys of being un-known.
he spends all of doto trying to convey this idea to billie through the hollows:
"There is freedom in being hated. There is license in being cast out. Some learn this lesson a little too well."  "These people lay their thoughts, their petty wants, their murderous desires in front of me to witness. I cannot turn away." "We carry what was done to us through the rest of our endless days. No one asked if we wanted it." (i like this one. he speaks for the community-- this is a shared experience, one everyone can recognize. however, as a Queer Figure, he never asked for this. he never asked to be immortalized. i like the double meaning here)
not to mention, the entire extent of the outsider’s Sole ability and influence on the real world is to “choose” people and give them untold power over others. this is a fun ironic twist on what marginalized groups endure from powerful people, (dishonored is largely about power imbalances and socioeconomic hierarchies) but it’s also fun to think about in the context of the role model/fan framing-- so many worshippers give their lives to be “chosen” by him. it’s easily framed as an exaggeration of otherwise very real power imbalances and often the flagrant breaching of boundaries existing between creators and fans.
and on the subject of the VOID...ohht he void.....
the void should be a haven for queer folks. for nd folks. it’s wanted by so many to be a safe space, it should be, it’s the Other World! it’s renounced by the abbey, crusaded against, even. but it isn’t. it’s just this limitless, eons-old horizon that hungers and starves for something to fill it. if the outsider is the lament of queer idolatry, the void is the lament of queer Hunger. it is roaming, and restless. it does not belong to the outsider; the outsider cannot survive without it. it’s the desire to belong, not a place of belonging.
the void craves this idol, this outsider-- i, for one, have often experienced hunger for a truly moral and just role model, someone to make the world Right, and i know this is another shared feeling. those who worship the outsider, who drive themselves mad trying to see him or be chosen by him, are suffering from this idol hunger. you see this in a lot of queer and nd kids and young adults. i grew up just having my life and interests like, punctuated by different fixations on different people that i didn’t know at all, only fell in love with the idea of. it happens a lot.
there’s a couple more doto quotes that really highlight this for me:
"They carve my mark into the old bones bleached by the sun. They carve my mark into their skin. They learn true hunger in the Void." "All these charms, these runes and fetid offerings on shrines made for me, will be nothing more than objects worn of meaning. Bones and dead things, thrown into the dirt."
“They learn true hunger in the Void.” is something that i wanna touch on real quick. people can spend their lives obsessing over the idea of what they think the void will cure for them, will fix in their lives, only to find out that it’s just a hollow manifestation of the emptiness they’ve felt all their lives. it’s not the needs met, but the need itself. you have to make the home, it doesn’t already exist and you can’t fucking run to it. it is heartbreaking, frustrating, one of the bleakest messages i’ve ever encountered in a game, but i’ve never felt more seen. by submitting to these ideas, the idea of a perfect unhuman human and the idea of a perfect otherworldly home, you are surrendering your humanity. you’re not only being transformed by the powers gained (if they are gained), you’re essentially dissolving with hunger after never having these needs met. you see so many people in these games whittling themselves down to nothing but base need. empty apartments occupied only by shrines, sometimes containing their corpses. journals of people dedicating their lives to the worship of the outsider, always ending darkly.  "I will find this empty place. Somehow the key to open the Void will fall into my hands. In time, I will learn the secret and he will call to me as he called to her."
not to mention The New Envisioned-- prolonged exposure to the void will always, without fail, turn a human into silver void stone. these creatures can no longer interact with or acknowledge the mortal world. they have surrendered themselves to hunger, and cannot be saved. this is celebrated by the cult, honored by them, even. i honestly like....i pity them, and i hate them, and i recognize that i’ve been those people, lmao. when i was at my worst as a teenager, i wasnt so much a person as i was just a shell full of hunger and heartbreak. my personality was defined by who i was a fan of. i think i definitely was Less Human then. the cult of the outsider is a universal experience!!
dishonored, at its core, is a celebration of humanity. it asks you to celebrate human emotion and weakness despite greed and bigotry. the powers are not to be wanted, they are to be ignored, refused. it is human to hunger, but it is Queer and Divergent to make hunger your life’s meaning, to need to learn the secret, find the key, be chosen and loved and cherished, to be made whole by some perfect thing. to find your humanity in something un-human. dishonored sees all that, mourns it with you, and then asks you to find humanity in each other !! love the spine of your lover, the blood draining down the docks, the pause to stretch languidly in the sun of a work day.
and finally...on the topic of outsider shipping....i dont think that, in his god form, it does him much justice to be shipped with anyone. he’s not much of a person, just a projection of his former self and a vehicle for his allegory as discussed-- im sure he could be shipped like this, but it just isn’t satisfying to me in any way. however, let’s talk a bit about his lethal and nonlethal ending. DOTO asks you to make a choice. is it better to give him an abrupt and merciful ending, after deciding that the fury he’s endured at the hands of others’ famine is too much trauma for any mortal to live with? or will you decide that it’s only fair to give him a chance to live the life he never got to, to return his humanity that was taken without his consent? if you choose to free him from the void, i think you can very very easily make the argument that he can be shipped with corvo, or anyone else that can easily be shipped w/ ppl. he’s finally free to live his life as a queer man, can explore the simple and complex joys of being human with other people, navigate the hills and valleys he never got to before. corvo’s just a nice pick bc 1) experienced human/inexperienced human is good, 2) they know each other, but they don’t. this is a good setup. 3) corvo is an older queer man and uhh you cant convince me otherwise lol! and older queer/younger queer is a self indulgence for me. also corvo is just nice. i think he would enjoy helping the outsider navigate his new humanity.
just some thoughts i have running through my head all hours of the day :) this is really long cuz its a combination of a lot of infodumps from discord lmfao

Tumblr+ is Problematic
The idea that Tumblr would install a paywall has disturbed us all for the past couple days but how bad would it really be? This post is a compilation of all the problems and issues that would arise if this capitalist aspect is used in the self proclaimed, “Home of Fandom.”
Makes Fanfiction Illegal
First of all, this is going to cause major problems for OTW and AO3. For those of you who don’t know, this company spends money on lawyers to protect fanfiction from DMCA claims. If a fic gets a DMCA claim, the website will just take it down as opposed to dealing with the legal problems, if a fic writer wants to challenge it that could involve going to court and even being up against billion dollar industries like Disney. The problem is that most people cross post their fics from Tumblr to AO3. This would make fighting lawsuits harder for them because if we are profiting from the original company/author/band’s work, then it is no longer fair use and it would be incredibly easy to claim. Fanfiction already has enough debate as to why it is against the law, don’t add to it.
Adds Competition
Fanfiction isn’t a popularity contest. We don’t come on Tumblr to have millions of followers, we make posts because we like them, we promote fics and artwork because they are beautiful, we make jokes because it makes our friends laugh. This would all change if fandom becomes a competitive market because how often would someone trying to make money on their own fics reblog someone else’s content? How many people are going to join fandoms because they can make money?
Affects Quality
Fandom is for nerds who want to experience all the emotions a piece of art has to offer, who give themselves willingly to create content because it makes them happy to make it and because they want to share it with others who would like it just as much as they do. They want discussion and banter and content. It is the modern day version of the Aesthetic Movement, we are quite literally “art for art’s sake.” If you add money into it you will notice a difference in the quality of the content, you can tell between when someone makes something for money and when someone makes something because it is their passion.
Dangerous for Minors
It is a serious danger to not be able to block someone on this website. There are so many minors on here this will cause legal problems for Tumblr if a bunch of 14 year olds are being sent explicit content and can’t block it. This will also cause an increase in cyber bullying because you can’t stop people who send you mean messages. Haters are a bigger problem in fandom than it is in any other area of the internet, I’ve been writing fic for 6 years and I know that people will hate on you for anything, even just because you ship something they don’t. If you can’t block these you are going to scare off creators who just want to have fun but don’t want the drama.
No One is Buying That
Last but not least, no one is going to pay to read my stuff and I’m not paying to read yours. Fanfiction is for teenagers mostly, a 14 year old does not have $9.99 per month to read a Percy Jackson Fanfic that I may or may not ever update again (sorry!). Fandom as it is now is not in a place where it can support a monetized system and it would deter a lot of people from it.
In conclusion, please don’t do this and don’t support this, it will not be good for fandom and will end badly for us all.

another thing about what’s changed pretty drastically in fandom culture (tbh culture in general) since when i was a kid is like. so, after several years of Anti Culture honestly i dont even have it in me to care anymore to have like, constant paranoia that someone out there is thoughtcriming by shipping the wrong things or even making violent porn of them, nobody should be literally dwelling on these things constantly lmao the specter of the problematic shipper is so deeply unhealthy and an unwinnable battle. what i feel is the acute issue, the thing we’ve actually made a LOT of progress on, is ‘does anybody even acknowledge that it’s rape/incest/etc and that it would rationally upset people.’
the danger of ‘rape culture’ is that it’s made up of things that are normal and treated like common sense, like ‘that’s just how it is.’ that’s what makes it a pervasive culture that creates unsafe situations, keeps victims from speaking up, enables perpetrators to do what they want and to get away with it. you get away with assault and harassment by convincing people that it doesn’t count. what was dangerous and hurtful to me about the content i saw was, like i said, that it was treated casually, that there was scarcely any acknowledgment that certain ships or kinks or specific portrayals of otherwise inoffensive tropes were more caustic, should be treated with more care.
in the same way that romcoms will utilize what is objectively stalker behavior and have it be rewarded with the romance working out in the end, loads of fanfiction would involve rape/incest/csa and not acknowledge it-- either because the author genuinely doesn’t understand that’s what they’re portraying (which is the fault of generalized rape culture) or because it’s just inconvenient that anybody would be a killjoy loser about what they see as a totally made up concept that doesn’t affect anybody-- and have everything neatly tied up in the end with their ship getting together/fucking and everyone praising it in the comments as such great content. it was encouraged and common (Normalized) to see literally no difference between that kind of shit and any other fluffy happy uwu unproblematic fanworks because all of it was fictional and all of it was made by people having fun. nothing in it needed to be taken seriously and none of it should bother anybody.
clearly, this is not what things are like now!!! like of course things arent perfect but there’s exponentially more awareness among like, all people, especially in fandom as well, of the broader implications of everything, the seriousness of a given subject matter. when these things do happen by genuine accident it gets discussed, and it happens less because people are exposed to those discussions beforehand. and everyone is goddamn well aware of what makes a ship Problematic, the theory behind it, even if there’s a whole lot of debate about whether those rules are being enforced appropriately or in good faith. like, as much as it’s obnoxious and creepy for people to be like “yes i know i’m SOOOO problematic <3 i do all of this on purpose <3 i love being as EDGY as possible <3 kinkshaming is my kink <3” it’s literally a VERY GOOD THING that they actually fucking know it’s wrong. that’s a big fucking change. that’s the entire point of working against grooming because grooming is based on normalization... a person saying “i’m into this specifically because it’s taboo and i know exactly how wrong it is” is literally not normalizing it lmao.
basically im just. longwindedly repeating what i said before: the fact that people actually know now to have locked side accounts and separate aliases and shit for specific kinds of content is a sign that this discussion is working. acknowledging that certain shit is caustic and different and triggering is actually a big fucking deal in contrast to how shit used to be and that on its own is going a long way in protecting today’s kids. this is why it aggravates me so much that we’ve escalated to infiltrating intentionally private spaces just to... show these works to a much broader audience that the creator literally did not want and took measures to avoid. the ‘righteous’ person who goes EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS!!! is literally doing more damage than the person who was like ‘i know this is a sensitive matter and people who dont sign up for it shouldnt be exposed to it’ and had their trust violated. even if the latter person is the one that’s the Evil Pervert.
if what’s in that private account is anything less than expressed intent/desire to actually harm real people then it should stay private because that means it’s literally inherently not the kind of thing that poses an immediate threat to people. maybe you view it as like, a Spiritual threat, metaphysical, religious, because of dwelling on it so much, spending so much time being afraid of what people are hiding, being crushed under the emotional burden of Everything In The World Is Unethical In Some Way, but that’s just. not healthy. and we do not agree. the tree that falls in the forest may still make a sound but it’s not one you would have heard if you weren’t putting yourself in its path. the tree falling ON you is a worse outcome than the sound alone if you hadn’t been there. Does that make sense

i found this vanqua fic the other day, it’s only a couple chapters but i like it so far. :3 it does have a ‘creator chose not to add warnings’ label though, so please be cautious. also baby-xemnas aka kotbysleep (nsfw) aka nekokat42 (also nsfw) is a much better vanqua artist than me so please check him out. X’D (heads-up those twitter threads are way longer than you think so make sure you see eeeverything~).
anyway, more wip art below the cut, plus my endless rambling (i talk about 18+ topics, just a warning)—
i’m still working on venqua week and i’ve got 2 more prompts to go, one i haven’t started yet and one i’m halfway done with—
Tumblr media
~aaand yeah i’m re-using it for a vanqua pic too... X’D am i lazy, or just resourceful? you decide. ;P
Tumblr media
but yeah, both of these pics will have an 18+ version as well. i admit i’m super anxious about posting it next week, as i’ve seen just how absolutely toxic fandom is on twitter. like, you thought tumblr was bad? i’ve spent the last few days preemptively blocking literally hundreds if not thousands of antis just so i can feel a little safer posting my content without some asshat calling me a pedo or telling me to kill myself over cartoons. XU i somewhat worry that i’ve accidentally blocked some people who were just joking around and weren’t actually harassing anyone, but it’s just so hard to tell sometimes. if i’ve accidentally blocked anybody here, just let me know so i can unblock you. :3 (idk why that sentence came out so sinister sounding but i’m legit being sincere X’D).
but seriously, idk when fandom suddenly got such a stick up its ass (around 2016-17 from my guesstimate) and decided aging-up a fictional character by a year or two is such a crime, but i guess that’s just the state of things. :T i could draw vanitas as a centaur or make him blond or whatever and no one cares, but aging him by one year? suddenly big problem! yeah, right. XP like, i know i said every character in kh is 17+ as of khmom (ignoring any weird timeline retcons of course), but heck i could make an honest case for the wayfinder family all being adults. hear me out—
it’s been 13 years since bbs, right? and for 12 of those years, aqua was in the realm of darkness, terra had some awareness while being possessed by xehanort, ven experienced some of sora’s life when he was in a coma, and vanitas was almost certainly in ven/sora’s heart as well, so all four of them could be said to be 31, 33, and 29 respectively. it’s not like their character models were any different when they were young teens as opposed to older teens, so can we really be sure they’re not all 30~ by now? heck, since ven is from the age of fairytales i could say he’s 1000 years old if i wanted too! (psst, it’s almost as if these are all fictional characters living in a fantasy world with time travel and whatnot and their ages are completely arbitrary numbers nomura made up on the spot, numbers which he has retconned before! :P).
now i don’t actually think they’re that old, but if people are gonna hassle me over a goddamn 2-year age difference, i might as well say fuck it and have fun with it, right? ;P it’s not like antis even know what the canon character ages even actually are, like when they try to say that skuld is underage when (assuming she’s subject x) she’d be around 28~ by now, or axel and saïx’s age. (maybe i’ll draw some saïx x skuld art and watch the antis lose their minds. ;P it wouldn’t even have to be nsfw to rile them up).
anyway, i do admit i’m feeling a little burned out on art recently. XP i’ve been trying to get one art piece out per week plus venqua week, and yeah it’s kinda taken its toll. i know this really isn’t anything anyone wants to hear, but i’ve been kinda thinking of moving away from fandom projects to work on my own original work. now, i’m not saying i’m abandoning a heart and a half nor anything as drastic as that! but i have spent like 2 years of my life on it just to get to the halfway mark, and i’m not sure i can spend 2 more doing only that.
i’ve got an original story idea that i’ve been working on-and-off on for the past 7 years or so, and i’m thinking of going back to it again (it does need a pretty big re-write). its main pairing is actually pretty vanqua-ish, now that i think about it. like, imagine the realm of darkness but instead of the heartless it’s infested with demons, and the main characters are the demon-slaying duo of a serious yet kindhearted half-angel and a feral, snarky half-demon. i even aged them up from 14 to 18 so none of my potential fans have to suffer the same anti bullshit that i have. XP
Tumblr media
what else can i ramble about... oh, i got these super cute pins for christmas! :D the heartless is by xkirakira, and vanitas and aqua are by maxxmerch. they’re just so cute! X3 i hope everyone had a merry christmas and a happy holiday! i’ll see you guys later. ^3^
.
.
.
*looks around sheepishly* ó3ò alright... confession time. spoilers for a heart and a half for the rest of this post—
.
.
.
sooo~ i’ve kinda hinted at this before, but yeah i’ve always planned on adding a sex scene to a heart and a half; when i started writing back in 2018 i hadn’t realized how hostile fandom had become compared to only a few years ago, and it worries me that some readers might drop the fic because of it, or be angry with me over the underage aspect. :(
idk, i could go on about how i just wanted to explore every aspect of a romantic relationship, or how other disney/square enix characters married or had kids young (ariel, sarah hawkins, héctor, claudia strife, possibly jasmine), or how attempting to apply real-world rules to a videogame fantasy setting is inherently silly and pointless, but really it’s just ‘cause i love vanitas and aqua to bits and i just wanted to write a cute and funny mild sex scene between them (this fic is rated mature, not explicit, so much less graphic than confection affection), and at the end of the day they are just fictional characters, after all.
i guess all i can hope for is that i’m a skilled enough writer to pull it off in a believable way, and that my audience won’t be too put off by it. >_> i know vanitas and aqua have technically only known each other for about 2 months so it might not be ‘realistic’ for them to go so far into a relationship so soon, but i think it’s important to remember that ultimately this is a romantic fairytale, and other canon disney couples haven’t seen nearly as deeply into each other’s hearts as vanitas and aqua have (and this video also helped me feel better about it).
i also wanted to finish that nsfw venqua fic i started a few months back, it’s set just before the mark of mastery so yes ven would be 16. i suppose it’s a way of testing the waters to see what kind of reception i’d get (hopefully positive) before i get to that part of a heart and a half. i was also thinking of including some of the uh, ‘keyblades as erogenous zones’ aspect from this terraquaven fic as well... w-why are you looking at me like that?! it’s funny! *sweats nervously* o3o’
in all honesty, i’m probably just overthinking all this (which, knowing me, is almost a guarantee >_<) and i should just *ahem* let my heart be my guiding key, and just write what i want to write without worrying about it all the time. i just get so anxious so easily... buuut that’s not really news to anyone, now is it? ;P well, i think that’s the end of my endless ramble, thanks for reading if you got this far. X’D and i really hope i didn’t actually upset anybody about a heart and a half. ;_; i just felt like i needed to vent a little, but don’t worry about me, i’m doing fine. anyway, i really should stop typing and get back to work on venqua week, sooo... bye! X3

Do you think you could share some of your thoughts on fandom spaces? I think I recall that you took a course that was relevant or something along those lines? I would love to hear some deeper thoughts on it all, especially about some of your recent tags? If you don't feel like it no worries of course!! Also I love your music 💓
thanks so much for saying you like my music!!  that means a lot!  the class i took was on celebrity theory, so most of the things i learned were just helpful in gaining perspective with regards to the celebs i follow.  i did write about (the swiftie/gaylor) fandom for my final paper so i did get some more insight from the research i did, but i still feel like i have a lot to learn about fandom more generally.  that being said, i can absolutely share some tips/food for thought when it comes to interacting with fandom in a healthy way...hope this helps!
fandom should be fun!  it’s pretty easy to get caught up in discourse or charts/numbers and lose sight of the reason you’re there in the first place...you got into the fandom because you love the art/content of the celeb or show, right?  if you’re spending the majority of your time online upset/angry, and especially if those feelings are carrying over and affecting your daily life, that’s a sign that you should take a step back and reevaluate.  fandom should always be a net positive experience.
you should be critical of the media you consume.  a large part of stan culture is defending anything and everything a celeb says/does.  being critical and understanding that celebs are people and will make mistakes is really important (both in fandom and just to be like a good functioning member of society).  i’ve definitely struggled with this in terms of taylor specifically: first i was way too critical of everything she did (probably stemming from internalized homophobia b/c i believe she’s queer and she wasn’t coming out) and now i think i’ve swung too far the other way and am sometimes too lenient with her.  it’s okay to like things/people that aren’t perfect!  but it’s just as important to be able to acknowledge their imperfections, especially if they’re actively harmful (taylor and cottagecore isn’t something that’s talked about enough imo, for example).
be aware of the diversity of the media you consume.  the musicians and other celebs i follow are mostly white (queer) women.  i think we all need to be mindful of who we’re looking up to and attempting to uplift diverse creators and media whenever possible.  you know that stupid cartoon of people at a baseball game about equality vs. equity?  sometimes marginalized creators/media need more love and uplifting than others. fandom can kind of be viewed as a microcosm of greater society, and it comes with all the issues and “-isms” within that society.  for example, taylor swift definitely has a majority of white fans.  if you’re white, you should be aware of that and seek out/uplift the thoughts of fans of color, especially when it comes to issues of race.  if you’re a poc, being aware of that demographic can be really helpful when it comes to internalized racism and feeling like you don’t belong (which you absolutely do).
like everything, fandom can be great in moderation.  i think that when it consumes your entire life is when it becomes a problem.  when you’re getting into fights or even just online 24/7 (i know things are kind of more complicated with the pandemic) you should kind of question why.  it gets said a lot, but just...going outside and immersing yourself in the so-called real world is amazing to just get some perspective on what really matters.
i hope this helped!  if you want to hear my thoughts on something more specific i’m always willing to share :))  i love fandom so much and it’s a huge part of my life and identity, but i think there are definitely some unhealthy standards that have become pretty common in stan culture.  fandom definitely isn’t going anywhere, so i think we all just need to be more aware and intentional about the way we interact with it and others within fandom spaces

Just curious about some of the points you made in that ask about the SU fandom being on its way out. You pointed to the show's ending as something closed off. What would be some components of an ending that you think would be more conducive to an ongoing fandom presence?
THESE WILL NOT MAKE THE SHOW BETTER. I want to clarify this before I start at all. A show having a strong fandom has nothing to do with the quality of writing. Amazing shows die in darkness. Terrible shows have huge fandoms. Having a fanbase that’s extremely motivated to create works has nothing to do with a good or bad show.
So, not from a “this is a good writing” perspective, but from a “this is how you get fan content” perspective, here are my thoughts on this:
1. No road trip ending. The road trip ending locks you into one specific scenario. When the show ended, aside from goodbye art, practically everything was road trip art and stories. Which are really fun! But, uh... how many road trip stories and pictures do you actually want? And let’s say you don’t want to write the road trip... Well, fuck you. Because Steven’s gonna be on this road trip for months at least, and Connie’s going to college and the cool kids are
2. Don’t split up all your characters. Steven Universe Future literally ships off every important townie but Connie and Greg in a single episode. Sadie, Lars, Kiki, Jenny, Sour Cream, and Buck all have goals and plans that involve them being out of the story. In a single episode the show says “these people will spend years apart with only brief visits.” SUF also wraps up Steven’s relationship with gems, having him say goodbye to them and even having him say flat out “I might not ever move back”.
3. Don’t obliterate your world’s lore, cause a major shift in all interactions, and yeeto skeeto. Shattering is reparable. Corruption scars are fixable. The gempire is dead. Humans and Gems appear to be seamlessly intermingling. What does that look like? What’s the world gonna be like now? Boy oh boy, I hope you plan to do a lot of work to figure that out.
These three things combine into a cocktail of “goodbye character interactions, hello whole world of nothing we know about”. Do you want to write an SUF fic? Make a comic? Draw art? Well, I hope you enjoy making a bunch of OCs, original backgrounds, and plotlines, because SUF has upset basically everything fan creators build off of to create more fan content.
4. S H I P P I N G. Shipping. Fucking, like, shipping? Encourage shipping. Imply more. Give your fans more.
But there’s so much more to storytelling than
IT’S FANWORK. Like, I’m sorry to people who don’t like it. I know it’s not the most important thing in the world. But you know what the vast majority of fan content is? It’s shipping. It’s romantic relationships being explored. We can talk all day about the reasons why that might be problematic but at the end of the day if you want a fandom full of content you need to provide ship fodder and a lot of it.
Look at Miraculous Ladybug. Most people in the fandom don’t even like the show anymore! They’re literally just there because of the LOVE SQUARE. If you give people compelling romantic character interactions, they will write so much fanfic and make so much fanart of adorable romance.
But although BisPearl is adorable, we don’t see loads of their interactions - they have to share an episode with Steven and Connie. It’s really hard to ship when you have about three minutes of screentime.
And then you have connverse, which almost exclusively existed to support Steven’s declining mental state. And that shows that Connie is a great girlfriend and that Steven can rely on her, but what does that tell us about their dynamic? If I throw them into a romantic AU where Steven isn’t traumatized, how is that going to work out? What do they act like? How do they flirt? We catch brief snippets of it, but that’s not the kind of thing that fuels a ship for a broad audience.
Steven Universe Future is an epilogue series, and it did its best to wrap everything up. And that’s a kind of good writing! It can be extremely satisfying and extremely soothing. But fandom thrives on the little blank spots in your world, on the hints of things that could be greater. It’s a delicate balancing act of providing enough to prompt the viewer, but not answering enough that you close them out.

Day 41: Caliborn: Enter
https://homestuck.com/story/4956 It’s pretty natural that Dirk’s move on Jake is going to put a strain on Jane’s friendship with him, even if he hasn’t made it yet; I think it definitely gives some insight into Jane that she reacts the way that she does. Not exactly a graceful loser, and in a way that is really pretty passive-aggressive.
She’s not as open and honest as Jade is; as the Prospit Dreamers go, in general, she’s really pretty guarded.
More after the Break
https://homestuck.com/story/4961
The AR, I feel like, gives us a pretty good look into who Dirk is, and while we already know that he impulsively jumps to the first solution he can think of, we can see through the shades that he tends to advise people to do the same things that he does.
Dirk is an extremely headstrong guy, and while he’s both very intelligent, and would really like to be a Puppetmaster, he can’t help but let his personality shine through his puppets; and he can’t help but let his first inclination determine his course of action. He’s him, after all. Why would he question his own judgement?
A bit like how Kermit the Frog is really just Jim Henson the Frog.
https://homestuck.com/story/4962
So what is a Juju?
Juju is a word which comes from French, and means plaything. It is a term that has been used to characterize the Folk Magic and/or Folk Religion of the people of West Africa, in much the same way that Totem has been, or that Fetish has been. In a nutshell, Juju can mean both Spiritual Power (as Mana), and an Object of Spiritual Power (as an Amulet) - the physical manifestation of the thing, and the thing itself are the same, in this sense.
The God and the Idol are the same - at least, they are to the external viewer. While it should be clear that this is a reductive view of it, the fact of the matter is that, a central part of a lot of religious practice in general is to treat the image of a thing, and the thing itself, as though they are the same; and we see this sort of image-based performance all throughout homestuck, through symbols, and rituals, especially where they are empty signifiers - symbols and rituals that have been emptied of their original meaning, and are now practiced only for their own sake.
Following the rules actually doesn’t seem to pay all that much in the world of Homestuck, and almost universally leads to disaster - which in no small part appears to be because the creator of the rules is Lord English.
https://homestuck.com/story/4965
I think it’s pretty interesting that Caliborn’s conception of smut is something as tame as fluffy hand-holding and caressing. While on the one hand, we can just say “Cherubs think it’s taboo because they can only enjoy Caliginous romance” I think we can also associate it with the relatively sexless nature of Homestuck, beyond how horny the characters are, and a few oblique references (which is not a bad thing; it’s about teenagers). In spite of all of the suggestive language and content, there is no possibility of consummation in Homestuck, or even until well after the end of Homestuck, because Caliborn’s vision of intimacy is a sexless one.
https://homestuck.com/story/4967
This takes a turn for the fucked up at the end. I mean, it’s all fucked up to begin with, but it’s such a non-sequitur.
https://homestuck.com/story/4968
Caliborn uses consumption related metaphors and imagery in relation to smut. Aside from jokes about Vore, what’s the significance of that? That the intention of Caliborn and Calliope is to comment on the fandom of Homestuck itself (continuing the identification of the Characters with the Audience that we discussed yesterday) is not really a secret to anyone. How does Caliborn view engaging with Homestuck, and how does he therefore view engaging with Andrew? His view is Hegemonistic and Predatory. From his point of view, the universe he inhabits is full of things to be consumed; objects to absorb, break down into the parts of themselves that make him more powerful, and the parts that can be discarded.
https://homestuck.com/story/4970
I really never get tired of Caliborn, he’s so awful.
https://homestuck.com/story/4971
His conception of human romance is one where he conceives of women as essentially objects of gratification; woman on woman is allowed, I suspect, for much the same reason that it is often rationalized that f*tanari porn isn’t gay; how could jackin’ it to two women be gay?
The idea of women as actors who exist for reasons other than to gratify men, and other than to gratify Caliborn in particular does not occur to him.
Obviously, men don’t exist to gratify each other. That’d be too mutualistic.
https://homestuck.com/story/4981
The Interplay of Sex and Violence.
As long as this sequence is pretty much over;
Why does Caliborn want to play a game? I think the answer is in line with the overall theme of Homestuck. Cultural transmission.
In his book Homo Ludens Dutch historian Johan Huizinga discusses the nature of Play as an element of cultural transmission, and as a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for the generation of culture.
What this means in a nutshell is; Games aren’t the only thing that is necessary for culture to be created, but they are necessary for culture to be created. Can’t have culture without games. A big part of this is because games serve as a stage for human beings to symbolically and ritualistically practice the activities that, as a member fo their culture, they will one day have to perform in order to survive.
This is why games like Tag, and Hide and Seek are the oldest in the world; humans are persistence predators, we hunt down our prey by just not giving the fuck up.
Caliborn’s game is Irony and Porn; insincerity, reproductive activity, etc. and gaming is intrinsically competitive to him; he uses his game as a form of power over Dirk Strider, the power to make him suffer, although since he’s such a dweeb, he’s pretty bad at making him suffer.
https://homestuck.com/story/4986
Meenah likes games too, but her enjoyment of them seems to be a lot more authentic, sincere - as opposed to being a form of power for her to hold over her enemies, her little word-games, with her fish-puns, are a source of legitimate joy to her, and the fact that Aranea will engage her in them creates friendship between the two of them.
https://homestuck.com/story/5027
All this may not have a whole lot of substance to it (I’m making posts at this point almost 40 pages apart), but that doesn’t mean it’s devoid of worth. Homestuck has plenty of pathos, and in spite of the fact that Andrew adores making fun of us for caring about these characters, I do actually care about all of these characters.
They sure have come a long way.
https://homestuck.com/story/5083
As Roxy is ostensibly the stealth leader of her session, we should generally be willing to accept her takes as gospel in a way that we don’t take other characters’ (at least to a certain extent). We just got done talking about how important rules are to the cherubs, and to Caliborn explicitly - we should take heed of the fact that Roxy is very willing to throw caution to the wind and abandon the rules.
Rules in Paradox Space are largely harmful restrictions to be worked around, rather than auspicious maxims to adhere to.
https://homestuck.com/story/5071
Caliborn is a serial forced memer. We’ve already talked oodles and oodles about symbols and rituals and empty signifiers; what is a forced meme except for an empty signifier? An attempt by a malicious third party to turn a meaningless set of pictures and words into a symbol, a symbol that signifies nothing other than itself, and commands the attention and adherence of people in the culture? Rules for the sake of rules. Memes for the sake of memes.
https://homestuck.com/story/5089
Roxy’s anxious babbling is just so much like Dave’s, it’s hilarious. Their language less so.
https://homestuck.com/story/5092
The answer to what a ball’s topspin is, by the way, if you didn’t already know is
an English.
https://homestuck.com/story/5099
Why does Calliope want to be a Troll so badly?
The answer is that she doesn’t want to be a Cherub.
Why doesn’t she want to be a Cherub?
That question could probably keep me up all night, but I think I have an answer right away. Cherubs are arbitrarily powerful, and Calliope does not want to be a Cherub. She wants to be anything other than a Cherub. I can kind of relate to that, even as a human being. After all, there aren’t cherubs and trolls around, even though they are conceivable. Of all of the things we know for sure that consciously exist in our own universe, humans are the most powerful things we know exist for sure. I’d spend a lot to not be one; power, after all, makes us more inhuman.
https://homestuck.com/story/5116
Since I can’t pass up an opportunity to comment on the metanarrative indulgence of the second half, let’s pause to appreciate the term MacGuffin; in a nutshell, an object which exists to be desired. Its only purpose in the story is for someone to want it.
https://homestuck.com/story/5217
The fact that Dirk is conscious of the internal head-goings-on of Brain Ghost Dirk, and is therefore, to some extent cognizant of the head-goings-on of Jake English just opens up so many questions that I still don’t really have an answer to.
https://homestuck.com/story/5238
I rag on Dirk a lot for being a piece of shit.
But man, he is so cool.
https://homestuck.com/story/5246
This entire awful romantic escapade has been created by the Auto-responder, and while Dave has been complicit in it, he is not the puppetmaster behind it. Sound familiar?
https://homestuck.com/story/5252
This flash is just so delightful to me.
It’s the first time Roxy has ever touched another living human being and look how delighted she is.
LOOK HOW HAPPY SHE IS.
https://homestuck.com/story/5261
Now that we know who Lord English is, we have an opportunity to get to know him a little more as a person. Aside from his absurd commitment to puzzle-murders, his strange relationship with romance and sexuality, and his awful and perfunctory craftsmanship, here’s the most important thing to understand about him;
He will always destroy something irreplaceable if it means he can acquire more power.

MDZS  vs.  The Untamed
Differences between “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation” (Mó Dào Zǔ Shī - 魔道祖师) and its live drama adaptation “The Untamed” (Chén Qíng Lìng - 陈情令)
(If you want to skip right to the differences, please see below the cut!)
I’ve recently fallen into the MXTX fandom by crying through TGCF and I’ve been delighted to see that I’m not the only one who’s been newly inducted. I've been seeing so much of the live action adaptation of MDZS, i.e. CQL, on my dash, and I'm so happy about it. After watching it, I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a post cataloging the differences between CQL and MDZS for those interested.  (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚ The goal of this post is for two reasons: First, to help people who are totally new to MDZS and are starting out with CQL as their entry, and then reading the novel (or going to the donghua/manhua). This will hopefully help them get their bearings in regards to the fandom, so that they won't be confused when coming across certain content that isn't in the live drama. Second, this is to help folks who have already read the novel/etc to understand what's different in the live action, so when/if they choose to watch CQL, they aren't caught off-guard by any changes. (I won't get into the manhua/donghua in this post because it's already too long as it is.) Hopefully, this will also help bridge the gap between fans, so that we can have a fun and shared experienced over this incredible world brought to us by MXTX! This post is split into two distinct sections: one without any major spoilers, and one with spoilers. If you want to be as unspoiled as possible and just want to know the big differences between the novel and drama, please read only the first portion. The second //spoiler-filled// portion is divided into other major and minor differences, and is mainly intended for people who have experienced at least one version already. Additionally, if you are completely new to MDZS, there are things which may seem like spoilers to you, but happen in like the first page of the novel/in the summary itself (or in the first 10mins of the first episode), and will not be treated as such. I will do what I can to keep actual spoilers out of the first section….
Before jumping right into it though, I think it’s time to say that many of the differences in CQL are in large part due to the strict censorship laws that China has. Unfortunately, we just have to live with this fact. Thankfully for us, the creators of CQL have earnestly tried their best in keeping the major points and themes of MDZS in tact, and have really stuck to the spirit of the series. Kudos to them and the actors for their hard work!
SPOILER-FREE DIFFERENCES
There is no explicit romance between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji in CQL. They are literally called soulmates right in the CQL summary, and there are very obvious romantic undertones to their relationship in the drama—but there is nothing explicit on-screen. Naturally, due to censorship. While the novel has the two in an intimate (and very explicit) relationship where they end up literally married, the show tones this down to something more subtle. It’s still pretty obvious that they’re in love though. (Especially in the 20-episode wangxian special edition.) Also, they always seem to be sharing a room with one bed….
The plot is modified for CQL. In the novel, the plot revolves around Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji following an aggrieved spirit as they uncover the truth of what’s going on. In CQL, this was changed from the dismembered arm of said spirit to a sword, but it serves virtually the same purpose as it does in the novel. The other real major difference with the plot is that something known as “Yin Iron” is what drives a majority of the past’s plot. It has its origins tied to demonic cultivation, which I will explain more below. It doesn’t drastically change the actual plot itself, but does change some motivations, etc. This is not present in the novel.
Wei Wuxian is not the founder of demonic cultivation in the drama. Yes I know this seems whack. After all, the original novel is literally called Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation/Founder of Diabolism. But due to censorship laws, they had to change this. Wei Wuxian still uses demonic cultivation, and still invents many things (the compass, the spirit flags, the amulet, etc). He’s still shown as a prodigy—but demonic cultivation is a thing that’s been around long before the story takes place; it’s just that no one uses it except Wei Wuxian. The reason is the existence of the Yin Iron. It was something that was found and revered long ago, and is a source of dark power. Hence, why demonic cultivation already exists, but also why no one follows that path. The necromancy angle is also downplayed in CQL.
Wei Wuxian’s morality is somewhat different. Again, due to censorship restrictions. In the novel, Wei Wuxian is far more of a gray character who does some questionable things. He makes mistakes, there are things which are definitely his fault, and he has many things which he regrets. However in CQL, he is shown more as a victim of circumstance. He’s portrayed as a much more innocent character, who happens to be doing what’s right, and is just continually fucked over. He still does plenty of questionable things, but it’s less so than in the novel. In both versions, he is still Chaotic Good, just the novel emphasizes chaotic, and the drama emphasizes good. Also, CQL doesn’t really portray Wei Wuxian’s breakdown or deteriorating mental health before his death too deeply.
Wei Wuxian’s death in the beginning of the story is different. The novel is much more vague in this regard, and it is more drawn-out. I will return to this point later as well, in regards to spoilers. The live drama has a more… “peaceful” and quick type of death for Wei Wuxian, and given how it’s the very first scene that you see in the show, it may catch novel fans off guard. Still absolutely heart-wrenching though, especially when you see it play out in full later on.
The structure of the live drama’s narrative is different. While MDZS intersperses its main story in the present timeline with flashbacks (as do the donghua and manhua), CQL goes about it differently. After episode 2, CQL takes the viewer all the way to the past and goes through the entire timeline of events which happen leading up to Wei Wuxian’s death as seen in the first few scenes. From episode 3 to episode 33, you are firmly in the past only. Novel readers may find that this causes many things to be revealed quite early on. The change in structure is probably the biggest difference. From episode 33 and onwards, you are back to the present.
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s relationship in the present timeline is different to start out with. The novel has Wei Wuxian first operating under the assumption that Lan Wangji doesn’t like him. This eventually turns around, and deepens into a romantic relationship between the two. CQL on the other hand, has present-timeline!Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji having a much more tender relationship from the moment they meet again.
Wei Wuxian’s appearance remains the same after he is resurrected in the drama. While in the novel and other adaptations, Wei Wuxian takes on the appearance of Mo Xuanyu (who happens to look similar to a younger him, luckily enough), this does not happen in the drama. Probably done for convenience’s sake. It is never properly explained other than the fact that along with the soul-summoning spell, Mo Xuanyu did some other things to ensure that Wei Wuxian returned to what looked like his old body. (Some body parts snatching might’ve been involved.) Thus, Wei Wuxian hides his identity by wearing a mask.
Everyone looks the same as they did when they were teenagers. Again, probably just for convenience’s sake. They spend a lot of time in the flashbacks so getting viewers used to one set of faces, and then changing everything would be jarring—and also expensive to swap out actors. So despite a 16 year gap, everyone looks the same with no aging. #cultivatingimmortality
The time gap between Wei Wuxian’s death and resurrection is slightly longer in the drama. It’s 16 years versus 13 years in the novel. Unsure of why the change, as it doesn’t change much apart from serving to make some of the kids older. Some kids’ ages are also slightly altered. It’s not a huge difference and it plays virtually no difference in plot. Also, I can’t confirm it, but everyone seems to start out older as well.
Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan, and Xue Yang are encountered much earlier in the drama. Before Wei Wuxian’s death, the three of them are encountered in Yueyang before the start of the Sunshot Campaign. The rest of their story plays out after Wei Wuxian’s resurrection.
Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, and Wen Ning attend the classes at Cloud Recesses. This gives them a lot more screen time. Elaborated in spoilers below.
Wen Qing’s relationship with Wen Ruohan is more antagonistic from the start. Just like how Wei Wuxian is shown more as a victim of circumstance, so is Wen Qing (and by extension Wen Ning). Elaborated below.
The next section is spoiler-filled. It’s divided into two parts: major and minor differences. Turn back now if you don’t want serious spoilers for either CQL or MDZS!!!
SPOILER-FILLED MAJOR DIFFERENCES
After the dancing statue/Dafan Mountain incident — Wei Wuxian passed out, and wakes up in Cloud Recesses in Lan Wangji’s room. Both of them know™ already. Thus, Wei Wuxian doesn’t even try to pretend that he’s Mo Xuanyu in front of Lan Wangji, but he keeps up the appearance for other people until he’s figured out. This allows the two of them to have a very private relationship with each other.
Also lending to this, Wei Wuxian dies in a much different way in the drama, and dies knowing that Lan Wangji cares deeply about him. Thus why their relationship on his resurrection is so soft. He knew that Lan Wangji protected him and tried to save him until the very end, and is far more affectionate as a result.
Speaking of his death…. In CQL, Wei Wuxian chooses to basically swan dive off a cliff after seeing the horrors in front of him. It has a very lucid finality to it, and feels as though he has decided that only his death can bring peace, and so he falls back off a cliff—only to be caught momentarily by Lan Wangji. He eventually wrests himself from Lan Wangji’s grasp and falls to his death as Lan Wangji (and Jiang Cheng) watches in horror. The novel is far more vague and hints that he met a more gruesome end.
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian essentially make up at the end of the drama—or at least end on decent terms by agreeing to put their past behind them and move on. Wei Wuxian wipes away a stray tear as Jiang Cheng cries in front of him in the temple. After everything is said and done, Jiang Cheng privately and quietly wishes Wei Wuxian well as he leaves with Lan Wangji.
Lan Xichen does not go into seclusion at the end of the drama. Despite his trauma, he’s relatively okay as compared to the novel. The drama doesn’t really comment on this aspect, to be honest.
In CQL, Jiang Yanli attends the classes at Cloud Recesses with her brothers. She is given extra interaction with Jin Zixuan during this. Yanli is in general given way more screen time in CQL. She is present during the destruction of Lotus Pier (she appears with Jiang Fengmian), and escapes with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng to Yiling.
Similarly, Wen Ning and Wen Qing are also present for the classes at Cloud Recesses. This is where they first meet Wei Wuxian (and Jiang Cheng), instead of Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian meeting in Qishan later. This gives all of them a pre-existing relationship before the events at Lotus Pier. Jiang Cheng also harbors a tiny crush on Wen Qing for a little bit. #same
Wen Qing is handled with much more suspicion by Wen Ruohan and Wen Chao, and during the Sunshot Campaign, she is even locked up. She’s saved by Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, but goes her separate way until Wei Wuxian encounters her again after becoming the Yiling Patriarch proper.
Mianmian is shown to be a part of the Jin sect in CQL, and is close to Jin Zixuan. She renounces her ties to Lanling Jin after everyone starts hating on Wei Wuxian.
Mianmian is also encountered in episode 1. She and her family replace the random farmer family they meet once they leave Gusu (for the second time) on their way to the Burial Mounds. The timing of this may also be different. This is because there is no real “epilogue” that takes 3 months later, like the final chapter of MDZS.
Mo Xuanyu was not ostracized for the same reasons as in the novel. In the novel, he’s also thought to be insane, but was thrown out because he supposedly “harassed” Meng Yao (i.e. had romantic feelings for him which were found out and he was driven out of Lanling). In CQL, he was thrown out for “harassing” Qin Su, but in actuality was only trying to reveal the truth about her husband, and was thrown out as an excuse to get rid of him before he became troublesome.
During the hunt in Phoenix Mountain, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian have a heart-to-heart, and establish that they do, in fact, care for one another. (I’m pretty sure they use the word soulmate here, but the subs are like “lifelong confidante” lol.)
The origins of the bunnies is different in CQL, and is tied to Lan Yi—an ancestor of the Lan clan (the one who invented Cord Assassination). Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji find a cave in Gusu during their classmate days, which holds the spirit of Lan Yi. There, she reveals information about the Yin Iron and that she is guarding one piece of it. After all this, Wei Wuxian looks after the bunnies after taking them out of the cave, and as he leaves Cloud Recesses, he leaves them in the care of Lan Wangji.
The Gusu Lan sect is less rekt in CQL, as many of them are able to hide away in the aforementioned cave during the destruction of Cloud Recesses. Su She, then a disciple of Gusu Lan, betrays them by telling Wen Chao that the others are hiding in the cave. He’s summarily kicked out. In the novel, he’s the one that tries to rat out Mianmian when they’re facing the Tortoise of Slaughter. (He is still the one who casts the hundred holes spell on Jin Zixun.)
SPOILER-FILLED MINOR DIFFERENCES
In CQL, after his 33 lashes, Lan Wangji goes into forced seclusion for 3 years first. And then his 13 years of playing Inquiry start. Extra depressing, but it doesn’t change anything else.
The ghost baby that Wang LingJiao sees is replaced with a dismembered eye. Still gory. Don’t really know which one is worse…….. Her death is definitely less gory in CQL, though.
The Stygian Tiger Amulet was made of the strange weapon found in the Tortoise of Slaughter in both the novel and drama, but in CQL, said weapon was actually a fragment of the Yin Iron.
CQL shows a few scenes of Wei Wuxian when he first gets tossed into the Burial Mounds.
Lan Qiren is the head of the Gusu Lan sect, all the way through the story in CQL, including the end. Lan Xichen is never referred to as the sect leader.
Gusu Lan's rules are a little less strict in CQL. And co-ed classmates and cultivators seem to be the norm.
This post is certainly not 100% complete, as it’s just what I managed to pick up as I watched/read and remembered to note down. But if you have questions or comments, please reach out to me and I’ll do my best to answer! I hope this is as accurate as possible, but since I’m flying off memory...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Take care, all! Feel free to drop into my DMs and scream with me!  ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭* ੈ✩‧₊˚

Note
do you have any lone star or 911 blog suggestions? i just ditched me 911 side blog and started tumblr life fresh with a whole new main blog, so i'm looking for new people to follow, also do you have any suggestions for just getting involved in the fandom altogether?
Hello! I do have some suggestions, but I will warn you, my list is pretty limited because it’s very hard to find good 911 Lone Star blogs because many are multifandom and harder to discover. Anyway, all the more reason to share what I have.
It’s exciting that you’ve broken from your side blog. I will be stuck here as a side blog forever, which can be limiting, so I’m glad you’ve made the switch.
I tried to focus on blogs that have recent and consistent 911 Lone Star content, at least during the season, and many of them happen to multifandom so keep that in mind. Many of them also love 911 OG! I’m sure I missed important people I follow because it’s hard to weed through my follow list, so I’m sorry if I do. I’ve also provided some reasons why I love these people, mostly to give these wonderful humans some much-deserved love. (in no particular order just thrown out however my jumble mind sees fit)
First of all, @mybaby-tk, I love your blog and am always glad to see your posts, so you’d definitely make my list of blog suggestions. Lots of good takes. Lots of 911 Lone Star content. I cannot wait for more of your stuff.

@bluestar22x a real fandom hero who always engages with posts. I love seeing this blog and their comments pop up because you always have interesting things to see. Such a great person and has a great tagging system for those who like that kind of thing (would be amazing if Tumblr liked to make tags fully functional haha).
@eveningspirit is also excellent. A wonderful writer (one of my faves) and I think we tend to like the same kind of stories, so TASTE! Seems really sweet and she just has 10/10 vibes. Is great at enunciating thoughts. A real fandom gem.

@probiechavez  Also OG 911 fan. But is a 911 Lone Star side blog. Great content. Love seeing it on my dash. Probie Chavez, as in Mateo, and this blog deserve so much love.
@guesswhofern before starting this I said to myself DO NOT forget @guesswhofern because in my follow list this one is tucked between a bunch of other non Lone Star follows. Anyways, all the Lone Star content on this blog makes me happy, and this blog supports creators a lot, which is amazing.
@mtngirlforever a multi-fandom blog, but one you have to follow because of all the Lone Star talk that goes on there and a bunch of excellent content. One of my faves. Also, some Tarlos RP is that’s your thing. If it’s not, it’s tagged so fear not. Can’t say enough about this blog.
@actuallytkstrand multifandom.  Mostly 911 and Lone Star. A good balance of text and non-text posts. Just the right amount of content. Some good lone star memes (we don’t see enough) and good takes.
@thegayfleet a blog dedicated to gay things. Provides pics from lots of Ronen’s photoshoots. Also has a lot of other gay content and gifs from Lone Star and other shows with gay characters.
