Dark Matter by @mysterycyclone , 221k, ongoing. this is a batman fanfic rec, of course my bbg dark matter is going to be here <3 this is a MCUxDCU crossover where after infinity war (spoilers for that if you haven’t seen it!) peter parker gets sent to the DCU dimension with part of the soul stone and basically is haunted by the ghosts of the avengers while trying to survive in gotham and get back to his dimension. this is so well written i’ve read it at least three times, it’s still ongoing but trust me it is SO GOOD. i can’t properly describe it, but if you like spider-man and you are interested in batman, you’ll love.

Red is the Color of Sinners by @bluelotuswrites , series, 120k, ongoing, M. i want you to look me in my eyes when i tell you this is my favorite series on ao3. it is set after under the red hood and daredevil 3 where jason and matt meet in a church after jason loses his ability to speak following the events of UTRH. they keep running into each other both as matt and daredevil and eventually jason begins helping matt out with injuries and tech. it’s not finished yet, but there is something so compelling about their dynamic in this series as well as jason’s overall character and how he is portrayed. i’m a sucker for mute jason after UTRH and this series does so well giving him a fresh start and a place away from gotham to heal and build relationships. i cannot recommend enough.

buy back the secrets by @vinelark , 71k, ongoing, T. THIS!!! oh my god, so this is a timkon fic where kon still doesn’t know tim’s civilian identity, but whenever he’s in trouble tim calls for superboy which leads to them meeting without kon knowing. shenanigans ensure when kon starts spending more time with tim! it’s still ongoing but the author is currently working on the next part and it is so so worth the wait. chapter 4 ends on a cliffhanger though so be warned :))

Sales People Know (listening is the most important part) by Mayhem10, 77k, completed, T. this has the coolest urban magical realism ever. tim basically runs this magic shop that shows up places and people who need something find it in his shop :) it’s kinda a slow burn found family fic with magic themes and a smidge of angst!

Retrograde Motion by Lysical, 112k, completed, T. this is best de-aged kid fic ever. jason gets turned into a 7 year old and basically the outlaws, artemis and biz, join forces with the batfam to take care of him. but trust me when i say this is worth your time, it might sound tropey but in the best way possible!! and jason’s relationship with artemis is sooo important to me in this!

Hand in Unloveable Hand (a chokehold) by britishparty, 54k, completed, M. this is one of the best psychological torture/grooming fics i’ve ever read. pretty much what if while our taking photos of batman and robin, little tim gets kidnapped and black mask gets his hands on him and decides he’s the perfect size for a protege. years of psychological abuse and insane mind games ensue. also tim is a Badass™️

If He Had Come by bronwe_iris, 45k, completed, T. so i’m a little freak and i love the angst of arkham knight jason, but more specifically the aus where bruce saves jason before he becomes the arkham knight! this is an au where bruce finds jason and saves him from the joker after 9 months of torture and brings him home. focuses on his healing mentally and physically and rebuilding his relationship with his family

Banshee in a Well by liverobinreaction (bugbee), 43k, completed, T. veeeery good angst. basically what if tim couldn’t die? 43k of tim drake whump where he just dies a bajillion times and eventually his family notices <3

The Birds: Hatching a Family by Oceanera12, 81k, completed, T. this is like “what if the batkids weren’t adopted by bruce, but instead they were all foster siblings who can’t seem to stay out of gotham at night and batman happens to find them and decides obviously he can’t leave these kids to their own business, he has to stick his nose in it” and there’s some angst and heaps of found family

catch the asteroids that come your way by ThePackWantsTheD, 54k, completed, T. i don’t read a lot of ships in the batman fandom i’m sorry, but this kyle/jason one is sooo lovely. basically the two of them growing up together and falling in love and then dealing with the aftermath of A Death in the Family and finding each other again :) really sweet and nice!

Post-apocalyptic setting, Celeste the final survivor of a run down camp continues to live among the undead of their loved ones. Another survivor from a nearby camp stumbles upon the ruins of the previous camp while scavenging and sees someone alive on the other side of the fence, living with the dead as if they were dead as well. Day by day they come back, bringing their new things, trying to bring some life back into them again.

Damon is a serial killer that moves around city to city state to state every year to kill another local predator in hopes that one day he'll manage to take down the number of men (whose faces he can't remember) who abused him, using his job as a criminal data analyst to not only cover up his killings but also look for new targets that may have missed the sex offender registry or dodged conviction despite solid proof against them. This time when he moves to a new city and gets settled in he finds that somebody else had already gotten to his potential target, not only that, this didn't seem to be the first killing like this in the area. But this time the perpetrator left a tiny piece of evidence that everyone else but Damon noticed, and instead of turning it in to help solve the case he keeps it to himself with peaked interest.

16th - 19th century setting ✨

Enemies to lovers, a member of the royal family ends up falling for a knight that saves their life, unfortunately, this knight just happens to be the royal’s childhood enemy.   The youngest son of a royal is 7th in line for the throne and has health issues, thus has no chance of inheriting the throne. in attempts to grasp onto any bit of power his father has, the royal marries off his frail and feminine son as a wife to a prince of another territory, an upcoming heir of a throne (loosely inspired by sporus and nero).

The King allowed his son (Lucien) to be abused by his painting instructor growing up, all this rage builds up and explodes when Lucien tries to convict his instructor, but the King instead pardons the boy’s abuser during a set of public trials outside the castle. Lucien, a teenager and young Prince at the time, kills his father in front of everyone, unintentionally becoming King himself from then on. Despite exiling his abuser after the bloody trial, the then Prince, now King is seen as cruel and scary, not to be crossed even nearly ten years later. Meanwhile, a citizen with a sick sister is caught stealing medicine. Being on trial with King Lucien is scary enough, but medicine thieves in particular are known to be punished heavily, since the Princess, who is one of the only people thats kind to the prince-now-king, makes a majority of the medicine available. During a public trial, the thieve’s mother pleads for his life and Lucien realizes that the thief is someone he knew, that he had recognized those fearful eyes from somewhere else. He was amongst the crowd when he killed his own father. He spares the thief, and allows the best doctors to treat his ill sister. As long as he works directly for him in the castle until his debt is repaid. 

It is tradition for the royal family to keep their children within the gates of the castle and away from the public eye until they are grown enough to handle it. The Princess was introduced to society at the age of 13, but every year the reveal of their younger and troubled son (Lucien) his delayed for various vague reasons. Everyone is both eager and suspicious, which doesn’t help matters. This is when the royal parents essentially give up when the boy turns 21, allowing him out with no announcement to the public. While practically frolicking through the flowery fields, enjoying the feeling of the grass and the new sights, he has a love-at-first-sight moment with another boy (your character). This is just an ordinary boy from a hard working family, and since the Prince was never revealed, he has no idea the boy he’s immediately smitten with is the Prince everyone is eagerly awaiting to meet. That is until he finds out, obviously.

(Movie theme) The Hunger Games, two people from opposite teams. Queer themes; gay men, trans person called upon as their assigned gender at birth. Exploring the earlier hunger games (11-50th), escaping and/or faking deaths, etc.

(Movie theme) Ego: Character A gets hurt and temporarily loses their vision. While their wealthy parents look for a medical solution, they have them live in the guest house and hire a caregiver, character B, to stop by everyday and take care of them. Naturally, character a and the caregiver get close, but there’s a big problem: character A is a superficial, seemingly shallow and straight. As a result, character B feels pressured to lie about their identity and what they look like when character A tries to guess what they are like.

Custom outlawed species character called a bloodluster (similar to vampires), after his biological father got captured/taken away his mother fled to another state where she met his 'adoptive' father and shortly after found out she had been pregnant when she left. Not long after he was born, his mother died and a good portion of his life was spent raised being experimented on in a lab. Until one day he found an opening, and ate his mad scientist of an adoptive father. Now he's off in the world, trying to get by as a normal person despite his "condition" without killing anybody.

I kinda like that we’re going to see the past. This is the second Taiwanese BL that’s been incredibly reassuring about the trajectory of the show in either the credits or the opening. This is probably more of MODC fallout.

Wayne is playing evil and sexy. Chun Chih is his subordinate. This show just keeps on giving.

Absolutely perfect comedy executed on the foot stomp into feeding moment.

This use of peppers as a coercion tactic was so unexpected and fun to watch. My goodness.

Bai Zong Yi’s friends are a bunch of crumb crushers.

“Did you use up all the food in the fridge?” is so real.

Oh no. Child abuse trauma.

Whoever Fan Zhe Rui may or may not have stabbed, he does seem to be gentle with Bai Zong Yi.

I’m such a sucker for touch-starved characters instinctively reaching out to hold someone in their sleep. Bai Zong Yi has nice lips, too.

Yeah, probably shouldn’t have kissed Zong Yi, my dude.

Why are these boys hiding amongst the trash getting mad that people are throwing trash into the trash disposal area?

Yeah, I’m with Zong Yi. He’s already being pushed around in this dynamic, and taking sexual liberties is a bridge too far.

I’m excited to see how Ai Di and Zong Yi become friends.

These scenes are in no particular order since I’m mostly going by memory for this post. Enjoy😋

The Husk in chains scene (episode 5: Dad Beat Dad)

Ok, so this scene is one of my favorites because we get to see the full extent of the fear Alastor puts in Husk, which honestly really humanizes him, which I think is really important for us to see as an audience because outside of when we see him with Angel, there isn’t quite much to his character that reminds us of just how human he is. This is also one of the first times we see how much control the great radio demon may have over the souls he owns (since we only get to see that Husk and Niffty).... And I am a sucker for seeing my favorite characters in similar positions (or much worse ones) than the one Husk was put in, and the switch flip from “I ain’t your fucking pet” to the utter fear in his eyes when Alastor turns the his anger on him, is amazing and lives rent free in my head.

Vaggie’s backstory (episode 6: Welcome to Heaven)

Don’t come for me, but…. I’m actually part of the minority of the fandom that hadn’t realized that Vaggie was an Angel. I know, I know, looking back, it was kinda obvious, but I completely missed that so this was a big plot twist for me. This scene actually also solidified my enjoyment of Vaggie’s character too since I think this scene made her feel less like a somewhat one dimensional character since her scene from this point on seemed to have more depth without Charlie being the one to add that depth by being her girlfriend.

Angel telling Valentino off (episode 6: Welcome to Heaven)

This scene had me fucking screaming!! First of all, on this page, we absolutely stan anyone who stands up to their abusers the way Angel did! We learn so much about Angel from the original Addict music video, and the Poison music video and it’s surrounding scenes, and even in Loser Baby, but I think we learn the most about Angel as a character and his deal with Valentino, and what his redemption arc may hold… All with a simple “fuck you” to the man who’s hurting him the most in this lifetime so far. I also love that this entire scene was brough on soley by the fact that he was protective of Niffty and his other friends.

“Nice try, fuckhead.” scene (episode 4: Masquerade)

Seeing Husk fight in this scene was literally the highlight of my first watch of the episode. I love everything about this scene because I love seeing how protective Husk was of the other demon because, while Loser Baby was amazing, this was his true first show of genuine care (which led to the amazing song and dance). I really hope we get to see more of this dynamic in season two because I personally love protective Husk! And I would love to see his reaction to the tables being turned, and Angel protecting him. I don’t know, its just absolutely adorable in my head.

Niffty and Valentino scene (episode 6: Welcome to Heaven)

This just made me laugh because this shows how untouchable and uppity he is…. Despite having to pay for Prime Video to watch the show, seeing Niffty just kinda put a little bit of fear in that heartless bastard was priceless.

Niffty’s stabby scene (episode 8: The Show Must Go On)

When Charlie gave Niffty a blessed blade and told her to just stab any angel she saw, and she ended up stabbing Adam… The way I screamed when he went down! And then everyone’s reactions to the stabbing, and the way Niffty just kinda stares at them for a moment before just stabbing him repeatedly. There is just no way that this scene could not have made it on my top 10 list today.

Vaggie letting Lute live (episode 8: The Show Must Go On)

I think that this scene shows a lot of the progress that Vaggie has made, and I think it shows a lot of the good in her that isn’t linked to Charlie. I knew that she did have some good in her after we see her backstory, but it seems like most of her good from that point on seems to revolve around her proximity to the princess of hell and we were missing out on who she was on her own, but Vaggie letting Lute live during their fight showed us a side of her that had nothing to do with Charlie and then her line after that, that “Live knowing that you only do because I let you.”.... Chills. Absolute chills and I loved this scene for her!

Alastor telling Mimzy to leave the hotel (episode 5: Dad Beat Dad)

Ok, so first, I have to say that I love the difference in the way Alastor is with men vs the way he is with women… With that being said, I actually like the fact that he told Mimzy to leave the hotel, especially because he still kept his composure with her the way he seems to with most women. I think this showed a bit of Alastor’s true feelings toward the hotel and the demons residing in it, though I don’t think the man would openly admit it, I enjoyed the way it showed in this scene.

Our first look into Valentino’s hold over Angel in the studio (episode 4: Masquerade)

We all knew that Valentino was the pimp that owned Angel’s soul, but I think seeing it really solidified how bad it was, and I like the range of emotions we see Angel go through in this scene and development it set up for Angel was absolutely beautiful.

“Yay pain!” scene (episode 3: Scrambled Eggs)

Honestly this one was just funny as hell and I really enjoyed this little scene and I think this is one of the scene perfectly sums up Niffty's character.

Honestly just seeing this side of Charlie is always interesting and I love to see it come out when her friends or her people in general are being threatened in some way. Her demon form flashing in anger like that is honestly one of my favorite things cause I am a sucker for my favorite characters being hurt, but a close second to that trope is when sunshine characters break down or snap in some way.

Niffty’s “If you see an angel stab it” scene (episode 8: The Show Must Go On)

The fact that Angel had to jump up on that pole the way he did because Charlie put a deadly weapon in the little psycho's hands and didn’t specify what kind of angel Niffty was allowed to stab was hilarious to me. And then Angel’s stripper dismount from the pole made it even funnier to me.

anyways i’m pretty used to noises at night and the general shenanigans that comes with rooming with younger siblings (there’s no privacy but admittedly it’s less lonely) (but i do prefer privacy). and I imagine deuce anyway to be the respectful type and just tries his best to be considerate

I think adeuce have that type of friendship where they butt heads and make fun of each other a lot, because that’s like how they show that they are comfortable with one another and that, out of all people, they choose each other as the main person to hang out with.

I think if it weren’t for what happened in the prologue they wouldn’t be as close as friends. It felt like an excuse for them to bond and get to know each other properly despite their differences (and they're roommates so if none of that happened i think they'd only be acquaintances at most)

I also love that during events whenever the other is not involved, it’s always so funny one of them is usually like “wow it’s such a shame ace/deuce is not here”

actually I dont think there’s an event where BOTH ace and deuce is in an event together??? man🧍(unless i'm forgetting something)

but also when is twst gonna finally have the main quartet all be involved in an event together 🤨

AAH i’m just a sucker for the friend duo/trio (+ occasional creature/animal) trope.

this was kinda hard lol. i love so many episodes in both shows but here’s my answer right now:

1987

5. the big cufflink caper

this one was an immediate favorite. it’s fun, silly, and clever. each turtle has their time to shine. the plot is so ridiculous but i found myself intrigued by the steps taken to solve the mystery. it’s great

4. take me to your leader

i love the concept of the other 3 turtles trying to lead in leonardo’s absence. it really shows why leonardo is so needed in the team, while showing why the other turtles have other roles. raphael doesn’t want to lead but can ground the team and is most likely to see things as they are, donatello is competent beyond belief but doesn’t have the focus needed to be leader, and michelangelo has the kindness and talent to lead but is ultimately too short sighted. it’s leonardo’s drive and ambition and confidence that make him a good leader and him needing to find that again and see that his brothers need him is such an interesting premise, and the episode is great at the execution imo.

3. four musketurtles

leonardo gets hyperfixated on a book, bonks his head, and wakes up believing his is the main character. it’s just so funny and cam clarke’s british accent reminds me of liquid snake which i find hilarious. idk it’s just fun.

2. beware the lotus

lotus is my favorite character beside leonardo so of course this was gonna be on the top five lol. i love lotus and leonardo’s dynamic, and i just love lotus as a character. even if we don’t get to explore lotus’ character very much, the episode does a great job establishing lotus’ abilities: her combat prowess, her smarts, her wit, and even her self respect. and the fact that she can defeat shredder so easily … mwah i love it.

1. farewell lotus blossom

hehe now here’s the episode where we explore lotus’ character more. she’s insecure about not fitting in or having a family/clan. and the fact that she feels comfortable around leonardo enough to cry and laugh and tease like AHSKAHAK PLEASE I LOVE THEM. the whole onion scene is my favorite scene in the show. i just wish we could’ve seen how she dealt with her new life without the spirit within her. and more leolotus obviously. the one thing that bothers me about the episode is that shredder and his group don’t show up after chakahachi takes the role of villain. they just leave and we don’t see them for the rest of the episode lol.

5. the insecta trifecta

i think this episode explores raph’a trauma and fear really well, and it is by far the height of the later seasons (ngl i am a season 1 fan lol). i love raph’s interactions with splinter so much. it shows how much raph has grown since season 1, and splinter’s counsel reflects it. instead of teaching raph as an angry child, he teaching him as a struggling almost-adult. he’s patient and understanding with him, and raph is more respectful and is able to try and talk through his struggles more easily. i love it. also i have a horrible sense of humor and the ant french kiss scene sends me into hysterics every time lmao.

4. in dreams

hehe i’m a sucker for worst fears/nightmare type episodes. also the ANIMATION IS SO COOL IN THIS EPISODE??? AND CASEY SAVES THE DAY??? AND APRIL IS SO WORRIED ABOUT THEM THE ENTIRE TIME???? man i love it. i love most of the farmhouse arc but this one is so good x3

3. parasitica

i’m not even a mikey fan and i have a huge fear of insects, especially wasps. so i legit have no idea why i love this one as much as i do. but the plot is so … small? compared to the other episodes. a majority of it is just in the lair, and the turtles are the only characters other than the wasps. and it works so well. the story flows great and you feel the urgency of the situation. also mikey banging his head into the table so he doesn’t pass out is funny to me idk. also. ALL HAIL THE BEAN … why wasn’t april there tho? she was living with them during this time lol

2. monkey brains

this episode is the best donatello episode idc. not only is it the start of april and donnie becoming best friends (before then it was super awkward lol and april wasn’t quite used to him yet), but also it shows donnie’s flaws, strengths, and insecurities so clearly. i wish later episodes were this good at exploring his character. it’s like they hit his magnum opus way too early lmao and didn’t know where to go afterwards. he over-thinks. with fighting. with hanging out with april. and with his insecurities … doesn’t think april will just say yes to hanging out so he has to come up with an excuse of some sort … takes a lot of issue with the word “monstrosity” (thinks he’s a monster and doesn’t like to be reminded) … and i haven’t forgotten about april. this episode marks the first major glimpse of her powers. and when splinter first offers her training. LIKE IDK I JUST ADORE THIS EPISODE.

is it wrong to have criticisms of my fav episode? xD i love leo’s fear, and april’s, and i do believe that donnie’s is appropriate (to some extent), but the others aren’t explored very well imo. and i wish mikey’s was the parasitica wasps instead of the stupid squirrelanoids smh. but i genuinely enjoy watching this episode on repeat lol. idk what to say rlly. it’s just interesting to me.

it’s easier for me to think about seasons as a whole rather than just episodes tho lol

season 1 is good from beginning to end. some episodes are better than others, but it all flows rlly well imo. also top tier comedic timing and i personally love the quick movements and quirky speaking animation.

season 2 has rlly good highs but boring lows? it does have the strength of flowing well tho. individual episodes aren’t easy for me to like (other than fungus humungous, slash and destroy, and the invasion), but there are good scenes throughout the season.

season 3 starts out super strong (with the exception of bigfoot episode and frog episode). i love the farmhouse arc so much. but then the rest of the season feels aimless and messy. i don’t rlly like the brain worm thing. they didn’t want karai to be a good guy yet so they drew out the villain karai thing way too long. i like the finale but there’s very little buildup.

season 4 should have been two seasons. the space arc is pretty fun, but a lot of the episodes had weird pacing and i wish there was more imo? like you have so many things you could do with a space arc but didn’t explore them. and then the last half was … meh. it could’ve been its own season to explore the arcs more. let april’s possession be more drawn out and a bigger issue, let don vizioso have more of an impact (especially for donnie), let splinter’s death be better written smh. also i hate the finale lmao

okay so … tbh i haven’t finished rewatching season 5 lmao. so i don’t remember lone rat and cubs, the usagi arc, the monster arc, the apocalypse arc, and the crossover arc very well. i’m rewatching the show with my sister tho so i’ll get there soon lol. but i really dislike the kavaxas arc?? it’s so useless imo?? why is tiger claw leading a cult?? and why are they resurrecting shredder when he already killed splinter which was his entire life goal?? and donnie had such a small murder problem THAT SHOULDVE HAD MORE IMPACT??? ugh. i like when worlds collide tho ajskahsk top tier. hehe ramona and apritello brain go brrr.

rewatching Moribito with a pal, which means re-reading the book, and like... i liked that the anime added content to flesh out the side characters and Chagum’s growth, but Tanda’s weird flashes of sexism in the anime is bizarre

in the anime there are instances where he gets frustrated for not taking on traditional gender roles in his relationship with Balsa (“I feel like the housewife of some damn soldier” etc), which is not something that was expressed in the book. in the book, Tanda’s insecurity in their relationship is that Balsa is always running off to somewhere and leaving him behind—and the possibility of her dying far from him, where he can’t help her.

and while I do think Tanda’s core insecurity in the anime is basically the same as the book, for some reason they’ve chosen to frame it as an anxiety about his ~failure~ to uphold traditional gender roles instead of being unable to help when someone he loves is hurt or killed, and not being able to even know about it until it’s too late (or maybe even never finding out).

like... it’s just really weird that they invented a sexist/gender essentialist aspect to introduce conflict into Balsa and Tanda’s dynamic, while the whole point of Balsa and Tanda’s relationship is that it doesn’t follow traditional gender roles and they’re comfortable (or at least had already made their peace) with it. like... what was the rationale here

(also, the English dub is pretty good, but i’m really bugged by Tanda’s outburst of “you can learn to ask for help every now and then!” in ep 5. at first glance it’s similar to the Japanese dialogue, but “learn to XYZ” sounds so condescending, like he’s lashing out bc Balsa made him feel emasculated or whatever, while in the original dialogue it’s more clear that he’s frustrated by Balsa acting like she has to go it alone. 

I kinda liked the change from “even a man like me knows it’s a man’s role to protect women” in the Japanese dialogue to “even an herbalist like me is capable of protecting a woman if that’s what she needs” in the English dub during his rant to the manhunt scouts in ep 6, but I really don’t like the changes from that point onwards. the English dialogue is peak entitlement (”Whenever she gets hurt she comes running straight to me [...] I’m such a sucker”), and while he’s deffo bitter in the Japanese dialogue, there’s no real implication of her ‘owing’ him for patching her up that is present in the English dub)

[movie review] batman: bad blood (2016)

“you brought us all together because you understood our pain, our loneliness, better than anyone else could. we needed family. we needed you. you’re not just a mask. you’re a man. the best man i’ve ever known.”

this ruled before it had nunjas, and then it had nunjas.

ok, but let’s get my big complaint out of the way first. talia is just uncomplicatedly, one-dimensionally evil in this one, so that’s... not great. it kinda ruins her entire dynamic with bruce and with damian. not that i was a fan of either in the first place, but it feels like there’s so much connective tissue missing from where they left things to where they are in this movie. even some kind of frank acknowledgement after the fact of like “look, she was a sexual predator and an abuser, it sucks but of course this is where she ended up” would’ve helped a lot.

like, you kind of fucked up by not framing it this way all along? i know these movies aren’t typically willing to go into that kind of depth on these kinds of serious issues, which is fine. you get to decide what the scope of your story is. but if you’re not willing to really deal with this kind of stuff you can’t just halfway go there in order to be edgier or grittier or whatever. you either have to be willing to deal with it or you need to leave it out. what we end up with instead rushes to the mostly correct conclusion but doesn’t show your work at all, so it just ends up falling completely flat and not really saying anything, and that’s just kind of depressing.

oh, petty complaints department: batman telling batwoman “using a gun makes you just like them” when she was trying to save a dude from being tortured demonstrably does not??? but that’s not even where i’m going with this. no, my issue is that in this continuity batman has repeatedly used vehicle-mounted (likely high-caliber) guns and fucking missile launchers, so he can get all the way off his fucking high horse thank you ever so much.

whew.

so, yeah. i actually liked this movie? but my review might end up a bit lopsided in favor of the one or two things i really, really didn’t like. and that’s largely because by the very nature of what the movie wanted to be and what i wanted out of it, the things i liked about it were pretty superficial.

the heretic was a pretty interesting villain and figuring out his whole deal over the course of the movie only to have him carelessly tossed aside was actually a pretty effective way of establishing where talia was at these days. and while i still have all my abovementioned issues with it in terms of what it’s saying thematically, it’s been a minute since we had a good “talia is controlling everything from the shadows” story, so for pure entertainment value it really didn’t suck.

i’m a sucker for bat family stuff, as i’ve thoroughly demonstrated in these reviews. i’m less a fan of bruce being as much of a dumbass as he often has to be in these serious, gritty ones, but at least he has to explicitly to outgrow it in this one! getting to that final shot of the drastically expanded bat family gathering under the bat-signal ruled.

as for the members of said bat family, the guy calling the shots for a lot of this movie while bruce was missing was nightwing, and as the world’s foremost robin i/ nightwing simp, hell yes i loved this. it’s always interesting when dick has to temporarily take up the mantle of batman, whether it’s in a more traditional portrayal where he really respects bruce so filling his shoes weighs heavily on him for that reason, or in something like this where their relationship is more strained and dick wants out of his shadow but gets pulled back in. there’s just always a lot of great character work. add to that the fact that nightwing is way better at playing with others, and i honestly just love this portrayal. they crushed it. i cannot say enough about how much i like him in this one. it’s probably the single biggest thing that elevates this movie for me.

i don’t have as much to say about damian this time? he’s a nasty little brat, as usual. and it’s charming, as usual. and he’s doing his best, and he goes through a lot, and i’m so upset that a lot of people are so annoyed by him. protecc the goblin sidekick!

batwoman rules. i have no notes here. and her gayness is portrayed very frankly and just treated like as much a baked in part of her character as anyone else’s straightness. i fucking love her in this movie and we’d all be better off if her and dick were in charge instead of bruce.

batwing is… fine. i got a good laugh out of how blatantly he’s just… he’s just bat-iron man, guys. he has a suit-up scene that’s just straight out of iron man 1. he’s just… bat-iron man. it’s hilarious.

anyway, uh, yeah! a lot of this movie hinges on dick deciding to trust people and bruce being angy about it and dick being right, so, yeah. it rules. except the parts that don’t. but mostly it rules.

First impression: so i think i’ve talked about it before but mtl has always been a show i’ve been familiar with but never watched from beginning to end until a few years ago but i always liked skwisgaar because he looked and sounded So Much like this guy i had a thing with during my first year of college and that’s always been so fucking funny to me so i knew when i finally sat down and watched this show he’d be an instant fave for me.

Impression now: skwisgaar my beloved. i was still mostly right about the fave part except he just got pushed to 2nd place. 3rd depending on the day but still a character i hold dear. a character who i feel strongly about and who i think got so underutilized in canon. and as i’m typing this i realize that like all my faves have that in common LMAO

Favorite moment: so many to choose from. honestly any time he’s just goofing off and shedding that sorta cool sex god attitude. like when he and toki are making prank calls? oh my god. peak skwisgaar. i need him just being a dork.

Idea for a story: some guys AU-centric but something i’ve tossed around forever is a plot/“episode” where skwis and pickles go have a day out together (+seb ofc) and go have fun being the stay-at-home dads they are. bc like the other guys are busy working but these two wanna do stuff while their kids are at school and their spouses work. and they never hang out one-on-one and realize Wait we can actually have fun together. then ofc the other three hear about it like hey um Excuse Me why weren’t we invited🫡 we like to have days out. and skwis and pickles are like well we just wanted to go do some fun stuff together and you guys have work so :/ then will’s like I DON’T!!!😤 anyway the stay-at-home dad duo still does their weekday shopping trips. sorry guys.

Unpopular opinion: HMMMM okay so i always see people talk about How Often they see other people say skwisgaar is like an unemotional jerk or something along those lines and while i’ve seen that before too it’s always been from like. posts from 2013. like WHO in the modern age is saying that about him. i’ve always wondered this bc i’ve never seen that happen now😭 but uhh Unpopular Opinion hmm. i’d say if anything i’ve seen more modern takes kinda flip that old take on its head and i’ll see skwis written as more powerless in dynamics and it’s like Hey hold on. don’t go turning it THAT WAY bc that’s not right either😭

Favorite relationship: abigaar and nategaar man……..the thing about skwis is that i think he works really well with lots of characters. i love skwistok a lot too, and i think skwickles is fucking hilarious, but those first two….THE skwisgaar pairs for me.

Favorite headcanon: god i dunno. i think i’ll always be a sucker for secret hopeless romantic skwisgaar; i really do think he would like to settle down in his own way. and i also think—though idk how much this falls into the headcanon category—i think his dynamic with his mother is something worth analyzing. i think he really does want a relationship with her, and he does care for her, but It’s Complicated. there needs to be better communication on both ends, but i don’t know if they’ll ever really reach that point. and i think skwis has some difficulty accepting that he may never get an answer to why things ended up the way they did between them.

Favorite moment: UM. HM. probably when he’s dueling Bowen near the waterfall, bc I love how it parallels their opening duel when Einon was just a boy

Idea for a story: honestly I would just b interested to see how his life would’ve developed had Bowen grabbed him and taken him with on his dragon-hunting quest. He was fourteen years old and stupid and raised by a cruel violent man. No fourteen year old kid is an irredeemable monster.

Unpopular opinion: BFHSHFHD I think just that he HAS depth and nuance etc is fairly unpopular but also there’s like. 3 people and a shoe active in the dragonheart fandom so what do I know. everyone else seems to outright hate him tho (which like, fair)

Favorite relationship: Einon&Bowen obviously. I’m a sucker for tragic mentorships + doing everything you can to save someone only to realize you’ve done too little much too late

Favorite headcanon: hmmmmm part headcanon I guess and part just literal textual evidence within the script but he does. genuinely. regret what he’s become. it’s not a regret he allows himself to dwell on but he knows he’s not what Bowen wanted him to be and he did genuinely look up to Bowen and desire his approval.

Johnny—

First impression: you are extremely hot and extremely terrible

Impression now: he would actively make me worse but unfortunately I want to fuck him and listen to him talk abt religion and barcodes and society’s decline. I think he is tragic and interesting and fucking rancid.

Favorite moment: the entire bit with the night watchman or the ending confrontation with Sebastian

Idea for a story: I don’t really have one fbshfhhsjf I just want to listen to him talk for hours.

Unpopular opinion: I think he’s a better, stronger character for being a fucking awful person. He wouldn’t be nearly as complex if we didn’t have to grapple with the fact that he is morally bankrupt from the beginning, making that the groundwork for his intelligence and finding out about the abuse he suffered etc etc VS the other way around

Favorite relationship: ok I think we get the most interesting interactions from him and Brian, but I think my favorite is definitely Johnny/Louise. their dynamic is so interesting and the old love, the tenderness between them

Favorite headcanon: ogh idk if I have any real headcanons for him? tho I do reeeeeeeally reaaaally wish I could see the improvs all the actors did. I need to pick David’s brain about this character bc David read everything Johnny referenced and built all his theories himself like that’s all. David.

The Corinthian—

First impression: this guy. is kinda lame

Fire Emblem Three Hopes  Theory: The Two God - Creator - Vessel Trinities

There’s so, so, so many reasons why I desperately want Arval to be connected to Agarthans/TWSITD. But one of the main reasons I want because god would it give such sweet sweet narrative symmetry and paralellism I’m a sucker for.

Like. Arval is the counterpart of Sothis right? Both are god-like entities who most likely aren’t gods with massive power that for some reason have lost their memory and are essentially brain goblins to the player/avatar character, a mercenary with (somewhat) mysterious origins who serve as each others counterparts.

So Arval - Sothis and Shetz - Byleth makes pretty neat counterparts symmetrically. But that is missing a kinda major player here.

Rhea.

Rhea. The daughter of Sothis and one of the last living Nabateans. The leader of the Church of Seiros. A central authority figure in the world of Fodlan. The one who created Byleth.

Sothis. Rhea. Byleth. God. Creator. Vessel. There is a certain harmony to the dynamic in the sense how Sothis created Rhea, who in turn created Byleth in the image of Sothis.

But if we look at the Sothis - Rhea- Byleth trinity and compare is to the Arval - Shetz dynamic we notice something missing. Arval and Shetz lack the Rhea in their dynamic. So far we don’t really know if there will be a Rhea counterpart dynamic, and even if there is there is a good chance that said counterpart will be an original character as well.

But what if I told you that we don’t have to go that far and that the canon has a Rhea counterpart who would fit perfectly to this trinity and make it so much more interesting. And no, I’m not talking about Edelgard or Nemesis here.

I’m talking about Thales, the leader of Those Who Slither In the Dark.

Think about it. Thales is already Rhea’s counterpart. They both are leaders of the major powerful factions that are remnant of the ancient civilizations. They both are driven by the death/ostracization of their kind (though in Agarthans case they kinda deserved what they god) and their goals are seeing their kind rise again in one way or another (though with Rhea it’s less bringing all Nabateans back and just moreso about Sothis). They both are controlfreaks who do everything to get what they want and defeat their enemies. At the same time their characterization has major differences: Thales is too far gone (and perhaps was always rotten to begin with), while Rhea is undoubtedly a good person even in the present, just one with very unhealthy coping mechanisms to her trauma and who arguably shouldn’t be in as much power as she is given her poor mental state.

In addition, it is easy to just insert Thales into this trinity and make him have some kind of connection with both Arval and Shetz. Given the Agarthans technological capablities I won’t be surprised to learn if Thales (or just Slitherers as whole) tried to resurrect their god not unlike Rhea. I don’t want Shetz’s backstory to be a clone of Byleth’s, but I’m definitely not ruling out possibilities for similarities and paralells

Furthermore, making the trinities represent the Nabateans and Agarthans respectively this makes the trinity much more meaningful from a narrative standpoint. It isn’t just “oh have a powerful god and the player insert character who serve as counterparts because of course”. It becomes the representatives of this ancient conflict between gods and men, between the two ancient civilizations that caused each other to ruin. Between Nabateans and Agarthans. The remnant of that ancient conflict, and the one that will play the present conflict.

But yeah I’m hoping I’m true with this theory because MAN would that create to powerful paralells and be much more interesting and narratively satisfying rather than if Arval and SHetz are connected to some rando and aren’t related to Agarthans at all.

Stolas can’t recall a time where “love” wasn’t synonymous with “pain” for him.

With Blitzo, it’s not love. So, there’s no pain. Stolas doesn’t let there be pain, at least not emotionally, the physical pain is something he quite enjoys. When Blitzo leaves after their monthly night together, he doesn’t allow himself to feel pain, only anticipation of the next time. He likes that there’s always a next time, even though that’s because of his active incentive more than anything else. But that’s alright, he doesn’t want Blitzo to come see him without an incentive. He deserves favors in turn for what he’s giving Stolas.

-Stolas angst!!!! The angst really is delicious in this one, with just as nice of a happy ending. Blitz is confident about the relationship, which is Wonderful to read and the "I know where this is going" segment had me in TEARS.

So Stolas is objectively. Objectively. Attractive. Kinda soft-looking, sometimes. Pretty. Whatever. Fuckin’ whatever. That’s always been a thing. Blitzo knew that, Stolas definitely knew that-- whatever.

"This is not," Blitzo thinks, sounding a little bit desperate even to himself, "some sort of revelation."

His flicks of the lighter get a little more unstable, a little more frustrated.

A clawed hand reaches over and takes hold of the lighter, lighting Blitzo’s cigarette with practiced ease, as if he’d done the same thing a thousand times before (He has, Blitzo realizes).

“Silly Blitzy,” he giggles quietly, giving Blitzo a soft pat on the head before curling up beside him, stretching one last time before closing his eyes to sleep.

Blitzo feels warm.

"This," Blitzo tells himself, and it sounds like a command, "will not be a problem."

-I saw the start of this fic on Twitter and have been following it religiously ever since. It's really a gorgeous fic, three chapters up, with the promise of a Great slow burn, fun dialogue and Octavia & Blitz bonding. The level of denial Blitz is in even as he moves comfortably around every aspect of Stolas' life cracks me tf up.

Their nights together are good, they always are, both of their tastes lining up to be shockingly compatible, but on the days where they end early and they get to spend some extra time cleaning up in comfortable silence or playful banter- and Blitz would rather take a bullet than admit this out loud- but those nights are pretty great too.

-AFTERCARE FIC, I had to write an aftercare fic ft. Good dom Blitz, Stolas taking care of him in return and a comfortable relationship that they both know is going to cause Problems in the future :)

Love in the bones and sinews of this curse by me

Five times Stolas and Blitz needed the grimoire to break a curse + one time they didn't.

-self explanatory. I tried to make it as funny as possible, everyone bickers a lot and Blitz brings Stolas flowers and gifts, what more could you need?

Life is a curse (love makes it worse) by me

"Alright!" Blitz says, clapping his hands together, "Weapons out, and-"

Half pull out some gun or the other, but half just look at him blankly. Blitz wishes for death.

"Save me from this family," He mutters under his breath, "Okay. Take these then." He passes out the few weapons he'd brought along with him and doesn't ask if they know how to use them because if he hears a no, he's giving up and going back home. "Stick close and talk loudly so the others can hear us. Let's go."

They move out, Blitz taking the lead and the rest forming a circle close behind him, starting up a loud conversation about the neighbour's garden. It gives him enough time to wonder exactly what the fuck he's doing here, in a nightmare world with a bunch of pretentious snobs, searching for his stupid Ars Goetia boyfriend, instead of sleeping in his nice lumpy bed back at home.

-a sequel to the previous fic!!! I had to write some Octavia and Blitz bonding, and accidentally added in a bunch of teenage imps who work for Stolas who imprint on Blitz immediately. And there's Eldritch Stolas, protective boyfriends and found family!!! The whole shebang!!!

This ended up being Much longer than I'd expected, but genuinely every fic up there is really good, go check em out!!!!
