Part two! Continues from here. Finally, we can talk about the real stars of this season, Hector and Isaac! Who

fuck I can’t do this.

After some discussions with @woodchipp, I’ve decided to call them Caesar and Abraham respectively, because my brain cannot accept that I’m actually watching the same characters that starred in hit game Curse of Darkness, and my thoughts quickly devolve into gibberish. I choose Abraham to, well, keep the connection with Isaac, to emphasize how Isaac as a character was named after his own cruelly symbolic death (because he’s more than “that weird fetishy guy”, he’s a genuinely tragic villain and this is where I will perish i stg), and because in the Bible Abraham nearly killed Isaac and what am I if not a spiteful bitch? :^) Woodchipp chose Caesar because it means “thick head of hair” lmao - and it fits, because while Hector is both pretty and a badass, Caesar’s cute, soft looks are pretty much the one worthy thing about him.

*sigh* I’ll get there. I so will get there.

(this, btw, was decided before we discovered that Caesar’s little zombie pug was named, in fact, Cezar. The coincidence was too funny to drop. Caesar is also pretty much a shell of a dog, after all :^) )

Is this childish? Maybe! But you’ll understand. I’ll just slap the salt mine video on myself and go on.

Anyway, Caesar and Abraham. I have Words, as promised. As a final warning before proceeding, this post is somewhat image heavy.

I start with the mother of all nitpicks lol: Caesar and Abraham are not Devil Forgemasters, just Forgemasters! And I never realized how silly this sounds until I found a clip in Italian, because in my head, I kept adding “Devil” before it. Admittedly this is more of a translation trivia than criticism, but I wanted to get this out of my chest. In the Italian version of CoD, the term was Forgiatore Diabolico, which is a nearly perfect translation, although it could also sounds like the forgemasters themselves are devilish. Still, close enough, I can tell that this profession 1) deals with creating, and 2) is demonic in nature. But Forgemaster in the show is just Fabbro Mastro, which is the perfect translation of the word, and it’s just unfitting! It means Master Blacksmith, and how am I supposed to get from it, and from simply Forgemaster, that these two are glorified necromancers?

And yeah, that’s what they are. And I don’t have much of a problem about it, tbf. In the game, Hector and Isaac can... well, I have no idea, Hector can deadass nullify Dracula’s curse with his powers which is straight up OP and nothing like what was established before. Isaac also says in the first cutscene that they can create devils from “a wisp of conjured matter” (English)/”a bundle of magical power” (Japanese), whatever that means. As a game mechanic, Hector infuses life into stone statues embedded with gems, which is what makes the most sense to me. In the show, Caesar and Abraham use special tools to put a demonic soul into a corpse: the former uses a warhammer to really drive home the forging part, the latter uses a knife because it’s quick and efficient. I appreciate that they gave us a more definite visual image of their powers, and it still works the same purpose of building Dracula’s army, so okay.

(it does cause a small plot hole later on - how did Caesar learn as a boy that he can resurrect corpses by using a tool, by accident? We see him using two coins in a flashback. What kind of incident could have lead to that? In the manga, Hector doesn’t seem to have control over the animals he attracts, so it makes more sense that he accidentally discovered his talent)

Speaking of things that make sense, Caesar and Abraham’s introduction also gives an explanation as to why they’re still human, while defending them from Godbrand who doesn’t want to defer to two humans: were they vampires, they’d be “driven by thirst”, and probably act selfishly. Since they’re humans, it proves that they’re there because they’re 100% loyal to Dracula, so loyal that they’re willing to harm their own kind. Vampires see humans as livestock and don’t really understand them: Caesar and Abraham’s hatred is far more personal, and drives them better, just as much as Dracula’s own hatred. Well, in canon leaving Hector human was a big fuck up on Dracula’s part (in fact, has Dracula ever vampirized anyone in canon? I only know Annette if you don’t save her in Dracula X), but the logic is sound for now.

Aaand this is ruined by Caesar’s very first line being “Godbrand, you’ve never met anything that you didn’t immediately kill, fuck, or make a boat of”, because writing.mp4. And this is going to be the peak of his character :^)

Deep breaths. I think I need to talk about Abraham first, since he has far less issues. And he’s fine. When I forget who he’s supposed to be, he’s a decent character so far. He’s soft spoken, melancholic, so convinced that love doesn’t exist in this world, to the point that he basically thinks that love and humanity are inversely proportional. His mentality is a little hard to understand, but that’s okay, I will probably get to know him better in the future. I like how he hides a cold heart under his gentle personality, but it doesn’t come off as a façade. He’s also shown to be a force to be reckoned with, as he can kill Godbrand with fair ease (I’m not going to guess how strong Godbrand is, I hate powerscaling). I would say that he’s smart, but after his justification for going with Carmilla’s plan, no, not really.

He lacks charisma, though: he’s way too subdued, serious and quirkless, and most of his dialogue is “muh loyalty, muh love, muh purity” without much that makes him entertaining - I’m not asking for him to approach Isaac’s level of fun, that’s too tall of an order :P just something to make him stand out. Considering how popular he is, though, and what little I spoiled myself with, I have the faintest of hopes for Season 3 and 4.

I think one of the reasons he lacks charisma is the utter lack of any relationship with Caesar. The two are strictly coworkers. Abraham looks down on Caesar, and Caesar barely acknowledges his existence until he’s asked to manipulate him. Abraham even acknowledges that he thinks that becoming friends with Caesar, a human, would be counterproductive in a war against humanity, which... why? I am with Caesar, the two are Devil Forgemasters before being humans, and being allies would actually make them stronger and, y’know, less prone to manipulation, wink wink nudge nudge? I can guess that the two will become friends by Season 4, but it feels like missed potential.

Of all the things I expected him to have in common with Isaac, a connection to pain was low on my list. Abraham self-flagellates as a result of the abuse he suffered as a child and to “discipline” himself, which I took as a mild connection to Isaac’s masochistic outfit (we only see Isaac harm himself once in Prelude to Revenge and probably as a result of his growing insanity, but him being tattooed from head to toe and the random piercings on his abs and bicep suggest that he might like pain a little too much - the subtext became text in the show, basically). Considering his concept art with the vaguely BDSM outfit, I wonder how similar he was supposed to be, and what lead his character to be changed to this point.

Like Isaac, Abraham’s main trait is his unquestioning loyalty to Dracula, but completely opposite to game canon, instead of being seen as the “spare” one, Dracula actually seems to care more about Abraham than Caesar! They’re best buds, they talk as equals, Dracula is 100% honest with him! Dracula saved his life and that’s why Abraham is so attached to him! ... soooo he’s basically human Death. Well, now we know where he ended up!

(don’t know where to put it, but I don’t know how to feel about Dracula seeking Caesar and Abraham out. There is technically little wrong with it, and I see how they tried to make Dracula more sympathetic and Abraham’s devotion more reasonable, but I have two issues. One, we don’t see how Dracula actually met them, and dialogue implies that he already knew about Caesar’s powers somehow, which is odd. Two, one of my favorite parts of Hector and Isaac’s backstories is how they fled on their own and sought refuge in Castlevania as children. Don’t you think it also somewhat humanizes Dracula as well, that he took those poor boys under his wing, even if at the end it was mainly for their powers? Plus, no wonder the two have no relationship if they knew each other as adults, instead of growing up together. Ahhh the missed potential :( )

His backstory... apparently generated some controversies? I’m not sure, and I’m genuinely asking anyone who’s reading this to inform me lol, because the controversies I see, much like with Caesar in Season 3, are not the controversies I’ve seen breaking the fandom. So, he was a slave of a priest (muh church bad), which sure is a way to justify a black Muslim person in 15th century Wallachia, and he went through a lot of abuse. His convinction that love doesn’t exist in this world comes from the brutal way his master rejected his confession. And yes, it was romantic love, in Japanese it was translated to aishiteru. But now I have to be petty: if Isaac is (... ehhh understandably) considered “bad gay representation” because he kisses Trevor while he’s impaling him, why isn’t Abraham being in love with his torturer as a young boy just as bad? Did he really need to love his master romantically? Aren’t you equating homosexual love with abuse and power imbalance? C’mon, be consistent.

(the weird Benedictine monks kiss joke that apparently wasn’t a joke also doesn’t count, I’d almost say that it’s OOC for Abraham)

The ending of the season sets his character arc up. He decides that he will become a more independent villain, although still loyal to the deceased Dracula. Admittedly, I more or less already know where he’s going to end, and it’s a good direction for a character previously defined by nothing but unthinking loyalty... although I could only laugh at the band of over the top assholes who are supposed to make me think “see, isn’t Abraham right to hate all humans?”. writing.mp4 :V

And finally, I very much do not like his design. He’s literally just a guy who stumbled on set and donned himself a Devil Forgemaster outfit - a drab one too, it should have been red, fight me. He looks like Pucci without anything that makes Pucci visually distinct (and from what little I know about him, they’re also similar personality wise). Are the dots on his skin supposed to give him character? Not enough. I don’t know how to feel about the red eyes: at least he still has some red in him, but if they’re meant to represent his magical nature, I prefer Isaac’s vaguely yellowish eyes for being a (I can’t believe I’m saying this) subtler clue that there’s something wrong with him. In short, I’m not going to remember Abraham any time soon. I wish they kept his glorious red dreadlocks :’)

And now, it’s time for Caesar.

Where do I begin with him?

How about the fact that he’s a dog in human form. I thought Guts’ canid motif was obvious, but Caesar beats him by a mile. His personality can be summed up as “puppy”, as Carmilla lovingly does it for us. While he does have a bit of a strategic mind, even disagreeing with Abraham on the best course of action, he’s mainly placid, submissive, loyal, and childish, described by Abraham himself as “a little boy” and a “simple creature”, and by Dracula as a “child in a man’s body” (what do you mean that they didn’t need to tell us? This show loves its pointless exposition! peak writing :V). He’s such an animal lover that he rationalizes Dracula’s plan as the equivalent of culling and controlling an animal species, not senselessly hurting them but not allowing them to harming others - the concept of an animal-loving misanthrope is nothing new, but I actually appreciate how soft Caesar is in this regard. In fact, his worldview is so warped that at one point he seriously compares vampires to cats... to explain how in his mind they’re just as pure as animals. It’s so out of this world that even I wanted to pity him at that point.

He’s even has his own zombie pug, which is funny to me because Hector apparently loved cats in his childhood. They really did everything to make them one the opposite of the other.

By the way, Caesar’s childhood is taken straight from the manga! Alchemist father who only cares about money and power, mother who resents his very birth, him being abused for bringing “cursed” pets at home, a burned down house that forced him to flee (I do like, however, how it was Caesar who killed his own parents, it shows how desperate he was and how there’s some real dark side in him). So I can’t even say “read the manga”. Ellis just made his own OCs and thought they were so much better than canon. Fuck you too <3

The way his backstory is presented in the first episode is so rushed, too, unlike Abraham’s who got a full flashback. We hear his parents’ voices saying the usual cruel stuff, and we hear them burning to death, all while we see adult Caesar in front of the fire with little to no animation. This is all to explain to us very quickly why Caesar is a huge misanthrope, and weirdly enough, we do get a fuller flashback in episode 3 of him resurrecting a dog. But hadn’t I read the manga, where we see in much more detail how hated he was by everyone in his village and his soured views on God, I would have felt nothing for him. This show is praised for its writing.

Caesar’s design is... almost perfect! Nearly 1:1 to Hector’s, obviously simplified for animation purposes (rip holes in his pants lmao). The one thing that bothers me, and I know that it’s going to sound weird, is his hair - I don’t like how neatly cut his curls are, and I get that it’s probably for animation purposes again, but they don’t frame his head well and make him look even more childish.

and what the hell have you done to my baby boy. what is that haircut.

As for the color of his skin, I approve! It contrasts with his hair and it makes him look Mediterranean :) I like to headcanon that Hector is Greek in origin, and what do you know, Caesar apparently hid in Greece! I feel validated :D

(of course, his being nearly identical to Hector means that it’s much harder to pretend he’s a different person. But I won’t give up. For Hector’s sake.)

(also, something that bothers me is that Abraham and Caesar have different symbols on their vest: Caesar has a wind rose which is a simplified version of the Devil Forgemaster crest, Abraham has... a mask? Some kind of rune? This doesn’t make sense. It’s a Devil Forgemaster uniform. They should have the same symbol, that’s how uniforms work! The connection between the two, man!)

Now, he is seen to have some reservations about Dracula’s plans unlike Abraham, which is shockingly canon. While Caesar has no qualms in killing people, he doesn’t want to cause mindless bloodshed, or “gleefully paddling in the blood of children”. As I mentioned, he sees Dracula’s genocide through the lens of an animal lover, and he doesn’t approve of senseless suffering. I would be happy about this, as this could have genuinely been the beginning of Hector’s rebellion in the game/manga that could then spiral into “I don’t want to be a pawn” and “not all humans deserve to die” and “I am human too whether they want it or not”...

(this moment goes to all the geniuses who reduce Hector to a flat “badass”. Will you look at that, he can have more vulnerable moments while still keeping his personality! :D)

Also, unpopular opinion: it’s not impossible that Hector used to be similarly naive back then. Living half of your life in Castlevania cannot be healthy for your development, and he did faithfully serve Dracula until Lisa’s death, so he had been conditioned to obey somewhat. I can imagine a younger, more submissive Hector, especially if he had to live with Isaac and his much stronger personality ovewhelming him lmao.

It was there! The setup is all there! Look at that, how easily you could have flowed from “Hector the innocent animal lover” to “Hector the self-affirming traitor”. Maybe not in Season 2, but as a series-spanning general arc. Man, I so would have loved to see more of General Hector and what exactly turned into the anti-hero we know.

But.

The conflict presented in Season 2 is not about Caesar growing a spine. This is about him becoming Carmilla’s puppet.

Yep. We’re here, folks.

Let’s talk about the ukeification, and I do not use this term lightly, of what is supposed to be Hector.

Caesar falls for the most basic of manipulations, to the point that even Silver in ‘06 would tell him that he should activate his braincells. On one hand, sometimes Carmilla makes sense: searching for the Belmont household to prevent any of their weapons to harm Dracula is a good idea. Or, if Dracula wants to kill all humans, what’s to say that he wouldn’t turn against Caesar and Abraham eventually? This would have been even more poignant had Caesar known that he was lied to by Dracula himself. But other times, the manipulation doesn’t amount to anything more than “oh you’re so smart and talented :) you will do as I say because I say so :)”. Also the way she torments Caesar by following him as he’s walking away clearly uncomfortable... sweetie, that is the worst possible way to make yourself look trustworthy.

But of course, Caesar totally believes a vampire lord who in one breath calls Lisa a pet on virtue of being a human, and in the other acts so concerned about Caesar’s safety as a human. Dracula must be truly desperate, to enlist this fucking idiot as a strategist.

“The castle must land at Braila!”

“And why is that?”

“Because I wish it!”

what a superb chessmaster, no wonder one of Dracula’s best generals had no chance against her :V

I didn’t know beforehand that even Dracula manipulated Caesar to enlist him! With Abraham he’s honest and respectful, but with Caesar, he has to play along with his more benign point of view, “uhhh sure it’s a... it’s a culling, sure why not, whatever makes you happy”. Later on, Dracula says that Caesar’s “a child in a man’s body, and that makes it easy for him to be lied to”. Goddamnit, forget “puppy”, Caesar’s personality is basically “pawn”.

“There's betrayal abroad in the court, but Hector is a simpler creature than that.”

I want to bite someone to shreds.

*sigh* They really took everything Hector stood for and flipped on its head, didn’t they.

Now that’s the stuff <3 hector really said “lol you like being a pawn? rip to you but i’m built different uwu” get his ass you utter savage <3 look at that condescending smirk too <3

Okay, back to Caesar. He’s a sweet lil boy who is pushed to betray Dracula, so much for being a general and a strategist. By episode 5, Carmilla can say stuff like “I am in control”, call him “puppy” and #girlboss all over him, she gets to yank and push him around and berate him, and Caesar can’t do shit about it, because he’s “implicated”. Because Carmilla is such a badass, and she’s a badass by shitting on Caesar :^) love how he even admits at the end that he wasn’t even thinking of stabbing her, like he holds no grudge over being tricked, insulted and literally pushed around. So fun.

(oh, and nice rapey vibes from her. “You’re mine now, you have nothing left but me”. In case you didn’t find her heinous enough. I love how this ended up being a red herring in hindsight lmao)

Look, the thing is. Even if I accept that I’m not dealing with Hector, protagonist of hit game Curse of Darkness, the same dude who trekked through half of Wallachia to tear Isaac, Death and Dracula to shreds, first person in history who kicked Dracula’s ass without assistance (which is why I’m calling his Caesar, see I’m not just being a brat)... I really don’t like the treatment of his character. I’m fine with a character being naive to an uncomfortable degree, but not only I keep questioning how in the hell he managed to get such an important position in Dracula’s army, it’s not fun to watch other people shit on him and look down on him. First of all, I get it, stop beating me over the head. Second, character bashing is just not pleasant. I’m supposed to care for him because he gets no respect in canon, and that’s not good writing.

And what comes next sure isn’t pleasant.

There it is. Ellis’ weird fetish for torturing Caesar.

Well, there was the rapey line I mentioned earlier, but now it’s time to unleash my ire against this:

Very rarely does bad writing make me feel almost physically nauseous. I documented on my blog how much I loathed the scene in Other M where Adam shoots at Samus in the back, because it was stupid, humiliating, and way too happy to show a beloved character in severe pain, in all its gruesome voyeuistic detail. Guess what happens to Caesar here?

Look at Isaac’s face that I posted above. That was roughly my expression during this sequence.

I will give this scene one point - we’re not meant to ever sympathize with Carmilla, thank god. But this scene comes out of nowhere, and it’s nothing more than a long Kick the Dog moment for Carmilla, with too much attention on how scared and little and weak poor Caesar is. Look at the focus on him trembling on the floor, curled in a fetal position, like an abused dog (and fuck you so much for making me think that, you even put him on a leash because GET IT HE IS A DOG IN HUMAN FORM I FUCKING GET IT). Look at how Caesar doesn’t try to do anything, not to run away, not to defend himself, even his anger towards the woman who manipulated him to cause Dracula’s death comes off as underwhelming - “go to hell”, that’s your best? Look at the lovingly detailed cruelty. And I know I’m supposed to be horrified and feel sorry for little Caesar, but I’m not. I’m fucking pissed, and not at Carmilla herself.

I know this is a post dedicated to the Forgemasters, but I need to talk about Carmilla now.

Why is she doing this? As a character. What is the purpose of this scene? Shock value, of course; making you hate Carmilla even more, I hope (I hope because she has her fans, apparently, and I really don’t understand y’all). And then? She felt like beating Caesar up, because she could. What does it tell about her? That’s she’s evil? No fucking shit, I’ve been watching her strut around like an evil #girlboss turning everyone into a dumbass since episode 2.

I watched plenty of clips about her. The most common comments (when they aren’t joking about Hector - who is the sick fuck who called the scene of him being brutally beaten “animal abuse”) are all about how ironic it is that Carmilla became what she despised the most. She always rants about “crazy old men”, and she herself is a crazy old woman. So, the appeal is that Carmilla is a huge hypocrite, which I suppose it’s meant to flesh her out. Look at her, pretending to be chessmaster, when she’s not above beating the shit of a weak human like a brute. Ohh, so evil, so twisted.

I didn’t quite understand why I didn’t care for it, until I compared it to a scene in the CoD manga. Yup, you guessed it, it’s time for yet another episode of “Beevean won’t shut the fuck up about Isaac Laforeze”! :D because fuck you i deserve my comfort.

(I could have waited until Season 3, or even 4, where I’m sure we’ll get even more of Carmilla’s oh so unique “hypocrisy”. But screw it. It’s not like her character will get any more interesting from now on. Carmilla is fucking boring and flat as a board, and I know that her character development will simply be “goes insane”. Besides, I’ll have other matters to discuss then. I’m coming for you, Ms. Mommy Fetish, just you wait.)

Isaac’s most prominent character trait after being a horny slut is, of course, his devotion to Dracula. He’s a huge Dracula simp, perhaps the biggest simp after Death. He’s more than proud to serve him, it’s his whole identity, hell he wears a collar to show it! The biggest contrast with Hector is how loyal he is to the point of sealing his fate because of it, while Hector grew a spine and defected.

In the manga, Dracula orders Isaac to find out what happened to Hector and, if alive, to bring him back, so that Dracula can punish him as he sees fit. Very clear cut: Isaac is to find Hector, and that’s it. It’s Dracula who will torture and/or kill him. Hell, Isaac even dared to have one legitimate question, and he got glared into submission:

You do not fuck with Lord Dracula.

(btw, compare this with Dracula in the show who can’t even make himself be respected by his own council. Yeah.)

So of course, when he gets confirmation that Hector is alive and well, Isaac will be a good boy (hehe) and do as told, right?

Yeah. Isaac is a callous, remorseless, sadistic, petty, hypocritical piece of shit, but he has flaws too 💖

Seriously, though, think about it. His hatred for Hector is so strong at this point, that he’d rather slaughter his own underlings using Abel (who apparently can shoot lasers from his eyes here, geez, poor dude got exploded), so that he can kill Hector unopposed, and then go lie to Lord Dracula’s face about it.

You know. The dude who reduced Isaac to a shivering wreck after one question, and who vowed to make Hector drink sewage for the rest of his life? Isaac got into his head that he'd rather lie to him than obey his command to the letter.

His petty desire to take revenge on Hector with his own hands (for having betrayed Dracula? For daring to be better than him? Who knows) is more important than respecting his master.

And he still has the gall to think of himself as loyal!

This is hypocrisy done right. This shows that Isaac is not as pure as he thinks, he’s also willing to do as he wants if Dracula’s wishes no longer align with his own, just as much as the same Hector he so despises. He has the same tiny spark of rebellion as Hector, but he’s deep in denial about it, and while Hector eventually grew to be more and more noble, Isaac’s desires are extremely selfish and childish (huh, almost as if Isaac ran away from his village as a child and therefore his growth was somewhat stunted 🤔 but nahh no depth at all in this character). These are not the hidden depths that make you think “oh they’re not so bad after all”, no this paints Isaac as a wholly awful person, but there is something intriguing in this contraddiction that makes him, well, more human. As much as he might be disgusted by the idea :P

(this whole rant, btw, is entirely dedicated to the very funny people who think that the best way to praise Abraham is to shit on Isaac and call him “fan disservice” and “problematic”, am I right TvTropes guys? :^) )

... well, as much as I would love to keep talking about my darling BDSM disaster, I sadly went on a tangent because I needed to finish my thoughts about the residential #girlboss here. Yay 🙄

So my question is: what does Carmilla’s hypocrisy accomplish? How does it flesh her out? Because what I see is nothing more than sadism for the sake of sadism. And she’s just as stupid as the Stupid Old Man she keeps making fun of. Beating Caesar up was stupid, she already had him, Caesar wasn’t even mad at her anymore. He has no fighting spirit whatsoever, he proved it to her by admitting that he didn’t even think of killing her! She didn’t need to do that at all, there was no logical reason for her to do that, not even an emotional one other than “yay I get to beat up a man!”. Is that it? It’s that her motivation, that she’s a radfem - scratch that, a parody of a radfem? It was a senseless scene. Carmilla is not deeper because of it. Fuck this stupid villain. The whole purpose of that scene is beating us over the head how pretty Caesar is when he’s in pain and scared.

Same energy as Adam shooting at Samus for no reason other than to have a long sequence of our protagonist humiliated, except that here, it genuinely comes off as a fetish.

Now you understand why it makes me sick? This is on the same level of the lowest rape fanfics on FF.net!

And this is still nothing. Oh, I’m so not done with Caesar being turned into a fetish, ma porca di quella puttana schifosa

... Season 3 is going to break me.

Ok so regarding the post about other kin

Yeah that already happens lmao

This is going to sound unhinged (and it is) but when I was younger and very chronically online + depressed I was somewhat active in "other kin" communities. But at that time the word was "therian" and it just meant identifying as a non human but still real animal (ex: wolves, birds, smilodons, insects, etc so long as it has existed). Other kin was more used if someone identified as a mythical creature (ex: dragons, unicorns, vampires, elves) and there actually was a distinction in some places however other kin was kind of a catch all for all types of "identifying as not a human in some capacity" (there’s also like a difference between psychological and spiritual other kin but I’m not even gonna try w that). Then there was also fictionkin which was and still is identifying as some creature or person from fiction. Also I guess I’ll mention factkin but I have never actually encountered someone who genuinely thought they were another real person (like kinning for ex: harry styles, Alexander Hamilton, w/e). Anyways, fictionkin and factkin at the time were kind of a joke and wasn’t taken seriously at all. But apparently fictionkin got more popular or smth and now it’s all over TikTok and apparently kinning just means relating to a fictional character or something but idk, it’s still weird (all of it is). And I have seen "true" other kin/therians upset with this and calling it "kin for fun" or something like that and they look down on it.

I am fully aware of how insane this sounds and I’m sorry for bestowing this upon you

see i don't even think it's that ridiculous to feel a strong connection to an animal or character or something like that. i just don't understand the communities that spring up around them and fight each other on who's the Real Draco or whatever (did people kin hp characters, idk). i didn't realize that it had been imported to tiktok; i thought it was mostly a tumblr/discord thing! i guess tiktok has a lot of users though. lol please don't be sorry, it's fun to talk about more lighthearted stuff sometimes.

4. How do you choose which fics to write?

Almost all my fics are requests or prompts I got at one point through tumblr or more recently exchange fics, that come with their own prompts. And then I also have a few haphazard docs filled with various ideas.

So what to write tends to depend a lot on if something’s time sensitive, ie, exchange stuff. Otherwise I have more or less a queue of stuff I want to seriously work on. Otherwise I have like two/three high priority projects at any given time. And then everything else is just on a whim lol, which is why I still have some WIPs from like 2018 that I keep telling myself I’m going to work on again.

5. How many wips do you have? What fandoms/pairings are they for?

Too many! Ignoring like tumblr drabble prompts from a million years ago (that I will get to!!) I have about fifteen main main WIPs. It’s literally all either Hellsing or Grishaverse, and like one Devilman Crybaby one shot idea. But for the sake of brevity, let’s go over like five. The first three of which I have posted some of, but the latter two only exist in my drafts lol

Grishaverse multi chapter time loop AU, which is literally just an excuse to write both post canon fix it break it fic, and also “what if early canon had even more grooming and manipulation from the villain” at the same time. And omg I am. over 50k words into this one 😭😭

Hellsing multi chapter roleswap AU, basically swapping the two fmcs in the series, the bleeding heart ingenue fledgling vampire and her like ice bitch vampire hunter boss in charge of everything. This is both a pre canon fill in the blanks and, when I get there, and basically a canon rewrite. Also they are absolutely going to kiss.

Grishaverse AU in drabbles, I haven’t written a lot for this one yet actually but it’s a priority. Basically the first book in this series has a dramatic villain reveal (as much of a reveal as it can be when the villain in question wears all black, goes by the darkling, and his entire thing is having terrifying shadow magic) and this is basically like what if that reveal didn’t at that point, and things were normal for longer and the protagonist had way more skin in the game by the time she realized he’s fucking insane

Hellsing multichapter multiverse AU, SO Hellsing is like Dracula fanfic in itself and a big thing is that when Mina eventually died, bc she was partially turned into a vampire, her remains are useful to the antagonists in the Mad Sciencetastic pursuit of creating of like artificial vampires? And the fic is about the Hellsing gang stealing her remains back from the other organization. But it’s mad haunted and an anchor to other timelines. (At one point my blorbo Van Helsing gets briefly resurrected to help fix all the shit going on lol)

Hellsing pre canon AU, so in canon we get introduced to Alucard-who-is-actually-Dracula waking up from a twenty year long nap and first meeting his like teenage vampire hunter boss who is a descendant of Van Helsing, in like a single scene. And then there’s a ten year time skip to when the real story starts. So this one is set during that missing ten years but canon divergent in that her own asshole father isn’t dead yet and also Alucard was never imprisoned. I just love really shitty family dynamics 🤷‍♀️

Relistening to razia's shadow bc I belatedly realized they posted their new version of it and not that they changed any of the lyrics or plot but hm! Just as confused as I've ever been and honestly fr guys am I missing something. I do not understand the plot lol my feelings for it are very "makes no sense. compels me tho" i mean

all of this critism coming from someone who has no knowledge of any possible lore that may or may not exist abt this and has never interacted w anyone about it but just listens to the album sometimes and has seen the youtube puppet play <3

OK so the whole theme being "the unrelenting constancy of love and hope can rescue and restore you from any scope" aw <3 except it literally never does lol like Prophecy Boy dies in both acts.

oh yeah uh, ok so i love toba bestie <3 love that they're a #girl in the new version like yes feminism. we love a genderfluid goat and i loved the singer but the "my words will tear through the air" line which is SO powerful in the original was kinda mediocre ngl. so yeah disappointed there but otherwise <3

i had a whole character concept for them in the far past but i've forgotten it honestly and relistening and watching wow they're kind of a cop huh? this is me going with my 2017 AU where the dark v/s light thing is a veiled xenophobia metaphor taking inspiration from the mechanisms high noon over camelot album. but yeah in this view the "every dark corner will soon see the light" is very civil servant performing their duty that, oops, kind of involves a punitive judgemental form of justice that negatively disenfranchises some more than others.

but again, the dark v/s light thing is so unclear like rly acting as if it's unpopulated when he's ari is banished or whatev ("desolate throne" but people do live there?? or once the light-people leave the land gets re-populated by the dark-people who were possibly implicitly expelled from there? going w the fantasy racism theme + the weird unexplained sickness thing i think the disparity between them is at least partially due to physiological differences in a nocturnal vs diurnal creatures kinda way. vampires who can't stand light vs guys who would wither away without it. etc etc.

But also again fuck Oh The Scientist the entire "you've broken the trust of your father's love" when was that love expressed?? and hello NIDRIA??? who has like a whole song about expressing her love!!! not even a "the truth of those you love" more encompassing kind of lyric just the very narrow vision of it is so :(

Also the "will be strong enough" is so hamfisted....add some ambiguity or a touch of hopefulness or desperation bc we already saw prophecy isn't all it's caked up to be! "with their love, may it be strong enough" or smth. idk man!! idk!!

BOO!! he's shown to be not understanding but still caring through his coldness, and also it's unclear what the prophecy is but in the beginning and the end "you really are the chosen one the calculated sacrifice" LIKE?? no wonder he was against it!! either knowing ur brother will die and/or being the killer??? yeah i think i'd be unhappy too abt my younger brother chasing a suicide mission.

and as for adakias and how literally his whole thing being feeling trapped, not fitting in, forced to fill a role he doesn't feel suited for, yearning for understanding and newness, etc.

and anura ALSO feeling those things!! self-recognition thru the other etc, and then for the next song to like immediately pivot to "and now they are going to settle down and have kids :)" it's SOOO infuriating. "to float away, and settle down" SETTLE DOWN????? AFTER ALL THAT YEARNING FOR A HERO'S JOURNEY???? WHAT DO YOU MEAN

Also the "Adakias, can't you see that I knew at first kiss?" >> "can't you see that without you I'd have never escaped" this line is partially bc i couldn't hear what she was saying lol but it sounded vaguely like this to me and fit with the themes of like. desperation, loneliness, finally finding someone who understands you and the desire to cling to that person, the whirlwind that mixture of things can spur you into making looking before you leap decision making, etc

also more lyric changes but i would simply change "i can't let her learn about my past" to "if i let her learn about my past" with a yes maybe? :) hopefulness to it, that then pivots to the "if she found out where i came from" of the original. the back and forth!! the desire to entrust your full self to the person you theoretically has this magic connection of love and understanding with that you don't want to lie to!! but that is shadowed by the fears of being forced back to a life you don't want. instead of just "oh yeah and i will simply keep this a secret, forever, regardless of how much this endangers the people around me :) what could go wrong"

My Unpopular Bookish/Writing Opinions

Since I got to uni I’ve been suffering from really weird burnout, so until I get that fixed a little, you are unfortunately stuck with this kind of posts! Lol, I’m sorry. But I’m getting better by the day, pinky promise.

Anyway, I’ve realized I have tons of unpopular book related opinions so why not start my new theme causing people to fight in my comments, am I right?

Romantic Fluff in Non-Contemporary/Romance

I’ve seen other accounts talk about this BUT, unless romance is the main genre, why do we never get to see the couple get together and interact as a fluffy in love pair???? I would give anything to see a fantasy couple fight monsters together while holding hands. I get slow burn and angst are really popular, but for once I’d love to see a couple get together without any complications. Their world is hard enough, why not let them have one nice thing?

HOWEVER, open endings >>>

Okay no bare with me. I KNOW this is super contradictory buuuuut, there’s just something about an incomplete ending. Now, I don’t mean LAZY, more like... If you’ve ever seen the movie Inception (2010), at the end of the film the MC is wondering if his kids are real or part of the dreamscape, but the camera angle changes before he can get his answer and we’re left with the intrigue. OR, picture, a romance story in which the MC and the LI haven’t seen each other in years, the MC finally gets the courage to seek them out, gets to the coffee shop the LI works at and the story ends before the MC opens the door or the LI turns around. It’s such a disliked ending, but I LOVE that.

Plot is more interesting, but less important

If you know me, you know I LOVE writing plot and analysing characters, but hate analysing plot and writing characters. But the fun thing about storytelling is that plot requires characters, but characters don’t require plot. If you have a strong plot but weak characters, you have a weak story and that is a much larger hole to dig yourself out of than the other way around.

Adult Authors Writing YA Smut is Weird

Enough said. I don’t know how else I can elaborate about this. I just find the thought of a, idk, 35 year old author thinking about seventeen year olds having sex VERY weird. I understand the good intentions behind it in books like Breathless by Jennifer Niven, but I just can’t get behind it at all.

Age Gaps

Vampires, immortal villains, fae... WHY have we made it a point to romanticise these weird-ass age gaps in fiction?????? I’ve heard many people justify it with “but they’re immature so it’s like the immortal is 17 too” and, come on, if someone says that about men in ANY other case I don’t think I need to fill in the gaps of what other contexts that’s used...

The insane power imbalance between a 500+ year old and a teenager is so overlooked and it’s disgusting. If the LI wasn’t hot, we’d be having an entirely different conversation.

Editing >>> Writing

I’m sorry but WRITING?!! No thank you. Creating a story is fun, yes, but actually putting it into words for the first time is SO hard and stressful. But there’s something so magical about cleaning up a story and making it stable that I love so much. Editing is where I think true power lies, tbh.

Sci-Fi and Dystopia Please Come Back

I know we basically live in a George Orwell/Brave New World/2010 YA dystopian hybrid monster baby world right now, but this genre was really the peak of all modern literature. The power to see the world through the eyes of pseudo-sociology and the worst possible scenario cannot be topped, I swear.

And then with sci-fi. Of course, I’m a sci-fi writer so obviously I have this opinion lol but there are SO many amazingly cool inventions and discoveries coming up every single day, how these not used more often in fiction???? There’s so much potential to do cruel, I mean, epic things in fiction using modern science and I’m lowkey disappointed we’re not using it to its true potential. I mean, what other point is there to science.

Marketing Fantasy Novels

Okay, here comes the big one: the current marketing techniques RUINED fantasy for me. WHY has the industry made comp titles such a big deal? It’s understandable from a selling point of view - to a publisher, not so much an audience. Being able to compare your book to another has become such a huge requirement that books are no longer unique, instead they’ve become shadows of one another. I see this so often when querying. So many agents say “please provide two titles that resemble your book - this shows you have studied the market well” dude no, this shows that I’m a well trained parrot and can write my book to be like anything I want it to be. This whole “Hunger Games meets The Witcher idk” concept has made it so that, to me, all fantasy books read the same. They’re all some watered down Percy Jackson or Shadow & Bone or Hunger Games story whose plot has been tainted by this outside information that really wasn’t necessary for me to buy or read the book.

You Are The Prototype (100 Follower Celebration Fluff - Felix (SKZ) x Reader

What the heck yinz guys?! How did I hit 100 followers?! I don’t even think I got that far when I first started writing fanfiction on tumblr like 10+ years ago. This random drabble means a lot to me for a couple reasons lol....first, its my 100 follower celebration! Second, I am a very shy bean these days when it comes to writing real people. I’m not sure why, since one of my most incredibly popular fics to date was a full length + sequel series of a Bruno Mars Vampire AU I wrote in 2010 LOL (its still out there in the tumblr-verse if you can find it LOL!).

Raucous sounds of combined laughter filled your duplex. You were certain the neighbors next door could hear everything going on and were likely wondering what prompted this kind of boisterous fun on a Tuesday evening.

You had to work in the late afternoon, so you felt it was reasonable and necessary to succumb to your cravings at 11pm for the chocolate chip pecan cookies you used to love as a child. Besides, your boyfriend was a pretty damn good cook and a bit of an insomniac himself. He’s sitting atop the edge of the kitchen table, beaming down at you, all freckled and brown-eyed; his bleached golden hair tousled over his head.

He watches you as you happily ramble, speaking entirely too fast and too loud. Anybody else might have tapped out by now, but Felix remained steadfast, instinctively drawn to your bright, bubbly personality, enamored by every excited word that fell from your plump lips.

He’s holding a big, white ceramic bowl of wet and dry cookie mix ingredients, stirring the wooden spoon every so often as he nods to let you know he’s still with you on every word of your speech.

You finally take a deep breath, coming to the end of your roundabout explanation.

“So, can you help me? Pretty please?” You add on the last part, hoping the bat of your lashes sealed the deal for you. Little did you realize, Felix would’ve done nearly anything for you. He loved you. You two had fell into the natural rhythm of your relationship two years ago. What you were asking was simple of him; you were a theatre major in college and needed to complete a final speech for dialect class. You chose Australian. You were good at faking a believable high British dialect, could it be much different?

Instead, the subtle nuances proved to be more challenging than you had anticipated; so it made sense to ask your Aussie boyfriend to help you out. Who else was there to ask, after all? You didn’t think it would be this frustrating when you picked it up to begin with. You’ve heard him speak to you all the time—over the phone, in person, Facetime; it even came out in a strangely sexy way during intimacy. You thought you could mimic it with no qualms, but your mouth just refused to cooperate with your brain.

“Do I ever say no to you?” He asks with a lopsided grin, plopping a dollop of cookie dough on your nose. “What’s your speech about?”

“Well...” You giggle, trying to lick your nose, “It’s gonna sound really dumb and simple–”

“Try me.” He grins, leaning forward to take care of the work for you, swiping the cookie dough off with a flick of his tongue.

You’re standing between his legs that dangle mid-air off of the table. You place your hands on his thighs, rubbing back and forth a few times before you give a deep sigh, “I just told the story of how we got Doobie.”

Doobie was the dog you both shared, sleeping peacefully in her bed across the kitchen.

“You make the biggest deal out of nothing, you know that?” He leans down and kisses your nose, pushing himself off of the table so he can continue with the baking process. “You made it seem like you were going to ask me to have sex with you for a show and tell project or something.” He chuckles as he sets the bowl on the table and begins to pick up dollops of cookie dough out of the bowl, rolling it between his clean palms, rounding the cookies out into perfect shapes and placing them on the cookie sheet.

“Now that is quite an idea…” You know it could never happen, but goodness, just the thought of your boyfriend spreading you out on a desk for all of your classmates to see–

“Bring it back here, Y/N.” He snaps greasy, flour dusted fingers in front of your face, lifting a brow. A kind, simple way to nudge your focus back on the task at hand. He had a unique way of being incredibly sweet, but taking control of you when necessary. “The speech?”

“Right!” You bring your attention span back to the present for a moment. You begin your speech, trying the best Australian dialect that you can muster. Felix tries to focus on the cookies being placed on the sheet; but when you get to the third sentence, his can’t help the laugh that breaks through his tightly closed lips.

“Shit..is this for a grade, Y/N?” He finally looks up at you from the cookie sheet, his brown eyes locking onto your own, twinkling in amusement.

You nod slowly, “Is it that bad?”

Felix is rubbing the dough between his palms, smoothing out the final cookie. “If your teacher knows anything about dialects, that’s a solid C-.” he places it on the sheet before looking at you, “I might be being generous since I love you.” He’s trying to not laugh again, as he places a few stray pieces of pecans atop the cookies that lay on the sheet.

“C’mon baby, I’m serious. It’s due in three weeks!” You pick up the tray, carrying it across the room to place into the pre-heated oven.

“Alright, alright. I get it.” he becomes a bit more serious; but before he begins, he asks, “Is the timer set?”

You set your phone onto the table, counting down from 14 minutes. “Ready when you are.” You sit at the kitchen table, pulling out your phone notes with the full speech inside of it.

“Let me see it.” He grasps the phone from you, his free hand dropping onto your knee. He strokes the fabric of your pajamas with his thumb absentmindedly as his lips silently move, eyes narrowing as he focuses on reading all of the text you had written down. He starts typing into the notes, thumbs moving quickly and efficiently. You want to ask what is he up to, but decide to just be grateful for the help instead. A minute or two passes, and Felix hands your phone back to you.

“Try to read it now.” He suggests, watching you intently as you scan over the phonetics he’s added to help with pronunciation.

Hiii, ok so we had to write a fanfic for class and somehow I ended up writing a secret history vampire au? I’ve never written fic before and it’s by no means perfect but I thought I’d post it here. Also it definitely doesn’t make sense chronologically or with some of the plot but whatever lol. Sorry if formatting got weird on tumblr

I knew I should be glad that I had escaped direct involvement in the poor farmer’s death, but admittedly, some part of me longed to have been a part of their ritual, despite its dark outcome. It was what we stood for, something grand, a brief escape from monotonous mortality. It had taken months of effort after all, and rightly so, I think, I couldn’t help feeling a little left out.

The others must have sensed my bitterness, or else they also felt regrettably that I couldn’t have been a part of it, seeing as I learned what happened anyway, as Francis approached me some time later. He had knocked on my dorm room door after dark, and when I opened it he walked in looking a tad nervous.

“Francis.”

“Richard.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, yes, just… we were talking yesterday, and… there’s something else that happened at the bacchanal. Something we feel you should have been a part of. You’re one of us now, after all,” he said, looking down.

“Oh. Did Henry send you?”

“I told him I would handle it.” When he didn’t immediately elaborate, I prompted him to go on.

“Well, so, what is it?”

“There was a reason that man got killed, and why we all came back so covered in blood.” He paused. “We have that saying, ‘live forever,’ and, well, Henry had a way to do that. To make us live forever.”

“Wh- How? I don’t understand.”

Francis looked around like he was searching for a way to explain. Finally he looked back at me and gave an odd, open mouthed smile, and then turned away again, exposing the side of his neck. The smile wasn’t really a smile; it showed me his teeth, two of which, I realized, his canines, were longer and pointier than they had previously been and looked unnatural in his mouth. On his neck were two tiny red dots about an inch and a half or so apart.

“F-Francis, '' I gasped, “no.” But it made sense, really, because it explained so much about Henry. How he was so good so young at translation and languages, how he had the money he did, why he lived so much in his studies that he hadn’t known about the moon landing. His perception of murder.

“ Yes. Henry is a vampire. We all are, now. Except for you and Bunny of course. Henry’s much older than us though. The books we read… he was actually alive when some of them were written. He was born in Greece. Ancient Greece.”

“That’s- that’s how you guys were able to have a real bacchanal. How he’s so impossibly good at Greek.”

“Yes,” Francis said, “it's quite impressive really, how much he knows and how well he’s kept the truth of it under wraps.” He sat down on the bed beside me - I had gone to sit down in my shock. “We only killed that man because we had just been turned, by the way. We were so hungry right at first and still out of it from the bacchanal. Normally human blood isn’t necessary, but we needed it then to complete the process.” To my astonishment, he then pulled a small vial from his pocket that looked to be filled with blood. “Luckily, we had the foresight to collect some extra from him in case we needed it.” Francis reached up and put a hand to my shoulder as I stared at him. “Will you join us?” He asked.

“Will I join you,” I repeated faintly. The sane thing to do would be to say ‘no, of course not,’ but as he held my gaze I found myself wondering what it would be like to truly live forever, to watch as the world changed around us, to have all the time in the world to learn, and read, and travel, and to stay young always. To be gods. And I thought also of how it would be to grow old and wrinkled and forgetful, while my peers, my beautiful, brilliant friends, stayed just as young and lively as they are now.

“Yes,” I whispered. Francis’s hand traveled from my shoulder slowly up my neck to cup my jaw. I repressed a shiver.

“Okay, good,” he breathed. “If you’re sure, it will be easier for both of us if…” He leaned closer, face now inches from mine, his other hand finding my arm. I closed the gap between us.

The kiss was slow but electric, both of us nervous. After a while his lips moved to my jaw and I tried not to think about the implications and just lose myself in the feeling.

“It’ll only hurt for a moment,” he whispered in my ear before placing one last kiss on my lips and then moving back down to my neck. Before I even knew it was happening, the world faded into hazy darkness.

Rising to the Occasion by @ladyaj-13 / LadyAJ_13 (4k, G, OT4 friendship, canon compliant, post hiatus, Celebrity Bake-Off, this fic is just as fluffy and silly and wonderful as you would expect a canon compliant fic taking place in the bake-off tent to be, i absolutely adored it and even the end notes are *chef's kiss*)

Hold You Now by @solvetheminourdreams / solvetheminourdreams (131k, M, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, American Harry, British Louis, ex-friends with benefits, closeting, bestie Niall, Harry is a PR rep who used to work at the same firm as Louis, angst, flashbacks, angst with a happy ending, I don't even know how to try to summarize this fic, it had so many emotions all the way from that fizzy feeling of excitement at the beginning of something with someone to the hope of something more to the devastation when it all falls apart and the heart dropping complete pain of realizing they're marrying someone else to the hope of possibility, and every single moment of it feels real, or at least it did to me, this fic was just epically gorgeous and wonderful and wow)

So Much Love Hidden Beneath This Skin by @fallinglikethis / FallingLikeThis (10k, T, Niall/Harry, Heartbreak Weather fic fest, Song Fic, based on Put a Little Love On Me, Ex-BFFs to lovers, closeted character, homophobic and abusive family (only referenced and in the past), hurt/comfort, healing, repairing relationships, this fic is so painful and lovely, the bond between them is so genuine and wonderful and watching them be able to stitch themselves back together again was absolutely wonderful)

Compass to my Soul by @londonfoginacup / LadyLondonderry (31k, T, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, A/B/O dynamics, alpha Harry, alpha Liam, beta Zayn, omega Niall, omega Louis, mostly canon compliant, so I guess... canon divergent?, Louis is a part of the band but not their pack, touch depri, forced coming off of stimms, omega drop, angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, self confidence issues, use of alpha voice, anxiety & anxiety attacks, I'm not sure that's explicitly what they are but i want to tag it because it's like, legitimately something you should be warned about, it's written in a very visceral way, this fic is my DREAM A/B/O FIC, i waited very long for it to come around and be birthed into the world, and it was somehow even BETTER than i ever anticipated, emmu is magical)

It wouldn't be me if I didn't start the new year with a ramble-y thoughts post

When I heard Betty White had passed yesterday (on here, of course) I was really upset. It felt like a cruel joke since my mom and I were JUST talking about people celebrating hee 100th birthday. I had said that I heard people were gonna make cheesecake, and I might too. I think I may as well do it ya know?

Also my mom mentioned that her husband is a Wisconsin native, Mineral Point to be specific. Some other fun facts about Mineral Point: Shandy is also from Mineral Point! They may have a vampire there! Kyle, who is from not super far from there, and worked there for a while, says there is no vampire. I asked if it was because the vampire had moved to [city where we live now] 😏

So basically all that to say I wonder if Ms White will be coming here to Wisconsin to rest. It would make that poor little nothing town real popular, that's for sure.

Covid gets to the point where it's not A Problem anymore (like how we treat the flu. Endemic? Is that the word). I actually clean my apartment and get rid of things. Good running year.

My goals for 2022 still don't exist and I'm 7 hours into the year. (Oh great. I just realize I only got like 6 hours of sleep lol) It's one of those I don't want to make them too big, but I also don't want to underestimate either. Hell, idek what races I wanna do this year outside of the usual one Labor Day weekend.

I just read a really cute fic for my favorite ship, which, while it's not a rare pair, but it's rare enough that it's extra special when I find one. It was a good distraction from the not thinking about my goals thing.

6x06: You Can't Handle the Truth

Then:

Soulless Sam was a psychotic work of art

Now:

Calumet City, Illinois

Jane, a cute waitress at Biggerson’s, talks on the phone with a friend about whether a boy likes her (Bechdel who?). “I just need the truth,” she implores, as the camera zooms in on her mouth.

Meanwhile Dean’s on the phone with Bobby about Sam. Bobby says he’ll look into it more and tells Dean, “Don’t shoot him yet.” Once off the phone, Sam brings food and a case.

They head to interview Jane’s sister. She tells Sam that Jane was having a bad day, and she tried cheering her up. Sam --ruthless and blunt-- calls her out on her lie and asks what she did. Dean watches, perplexed. The sister starts crying, and admits that she wanted to console her sister, but it’s not what came out when she talked to her. They leave wondering what could have caused the fatal exchange.

At a dentist’s office, a man sits in the dreaded chair, chit chatting with the dentist. He suddenly admits to not liking his wife anymore, and he’s actually a raging pedophile.

Dean’s back on the phone with Bobby, hoping for answers on whether it’s Sam or Satan that’s Dean’s copilot. Dean’s struggling with the idea that this could just be Sam.

Sam comes back to the motel to report another death --this time a guy got drilled to death. (But by the “non-sexy kind of drilling”, as Dean points out. DUDE.) Dean tells Sam to go interview the dentist alone. He’ll stay behind and do research. Uh, not suspicious at ALL , Dean.

Turns out, the dentist hung himself before Sam could talk with him. They’re thinking that all the truth telling around the deaths point to a curse. While Sam heads to the morgue to check out the body, Dean heads to the dentist’s office. Once there, he finds a receipt for “Harry’s House of Horns” and remembers that Jane also had frequented the store.

He goes to interview the store owner.

The owner asks about progress on his stolen horn. It was a museum piece, a thousand years old, one in a million. It was stolen the same day Jane died.

Later, at the motel, he looks up Gabriel’s Horn, and sarcastically prays to Cas to check out the “loose nuke”, not really expecting the angel to show.

GUYS. I haven’t rewatched this episode in --forever!--and didn’t think Cas was in it. But HE IS. AND we get a “Hello, Dean.”

Dean’s a little (!) pissed that Cas will come for this stupid horn, but not otherwise. Cas reassures Dean that Sam is not Lucifer while pouring him a consolation drink.

Dean asks Cas what’s wrong with Sam, but Cas doesn’t know (Like, doesn’t Cas honestly not know he forgot Sam’s soul or is he lying on purpose?). Dean then stares (and stares) at Cas. He wants to know what Cas’s deal is --when did he stop being human (*whimpering noises*). “I’m at war.”

For Science:

Dean mentions Gabriel’s Horn of Truth and says they think it’s in town. Before he can continue, Cas is gone. (*whimpering noises*)

Dean takes a drink, and Cas is back before he can finish swallowing. He searched the town and didn’t find Gabriel’s horn. Dean turns his back and tells Cas, “Nice seeing you anyway.” Cas tries mending fences a bit by telling Dean that he does want to help with Sam. He tells Dean that he’ll “make inquiries”, and is gone. Dean looks around the room forlornly, and takes another drink.

Sam takes a look at the dead dentist and asks to see the rest of the bodies. The coroner says, “They’re gone.” Gone gone. They’re gone.

Dean sits at a bar, nursing his Cas wounds, and watches the news on the television. Sam calls with the news. He’s at a missing person’s apartment now --and since she died a whole week before the others, he’s thinking the curse started with her.

Dean orders another drink for the road, and utters the words, “I’d just like the freaking truth.” The bartender unloads some serious truths on Dean --and he realizes that he’s cursed.

He calls Bobby to test out his new cursed skills, and learns that Bobby’s drinking milk in the middle of the day and watching Tori and Dean. Lol, nothing to confess at all, Bobby! “I guess it does work over the phone,” Dean laments. Bobby also confesses to pedicures and that Dean’s his favorite (but Sam’s the better hunter). OOF. Said flippantly, but this is one truth siblings never want confirmation on. Dean tells Bobby that he’s cursed --and then he gets an idea.

Dean calls Sam strategically now that he’s carrying the truth curse, and asks him to call him when he has a chance SO HE CAN SPILL. Sam can’t come to the phone right now because he’s going over the case with Corey’s sister. She confesses that her sister was obsessed with finding out the truth about her potentially-cheating boyfriend.

Back with Dean, Lisa calls at the WORST TIME. She confronts him about his behavior - storming in and shoving Ben. “You've got so much buried in there, and you push it down, and you push it down. Do you honestly think that you can go through life like that and not freak out? Just, what, drink half a fifth a night and you're good?”

Lisa then tears into the reappearance of Sam, tagging the Winchesters’ relationship as unhealthy. As soon as Sam reappeared, she knew their relationship was over. Once everything’s laid out, Lisa pauses. “That came out so much harsher than I meant,” she says, softer this time. Dean absorbs her criticism like a towel specially designed for soaking up loathing. She tells him they’re done.

Sam tears through the bedroom looking for evidence. He finds a cat skull under the bed. “Yahtzee,” as they say. Dean storms in and demands the truth about the vampire hunt. Sam goes dewy eyed. He froze when Dean was attacked! And he feels super duper extra duper bad about it! For REALS.

Later, they uncover the truth - quite literally - while doing research back at the motel. The cat skull was part of a ritual to invoke Veritas. Now everybody in town calls on Veritas whenever they demand the truth. Bombarded with the truth, victims kill themselves and become tributes.

Cut to a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it montage of stealing a hard drive from the TV studio of Ashley Frank, local TV anchor. They (mostly Sam) watch cut footage until dawn.

For Pretty Motel Science:

Nothing suspicious appears until a barking dog makes an appearance on film. While the dog barks uncontrollably at the news anchor, they FINALLY notice an eye flash. Monster target LOCKED.

At Ashley Frank’s palatial home, they ready their weapons: blades coated with dog blood. (Sam does NOT want you to ask where he got it from.) The Winchester’s creep through her house, and finally locate an altar-like setup. There are candles, a sculpture of Veritas, and many cute widdle kitties. Veritas arrives and immediately knocks out the Winchesters.

Later, they wake to find themselves tied to posts. Veritas strolls in wearing a fabulous gold gown and gets right in Dean’s face so she can absorb some delicious emotions.

Dean confesses that he feels better about Sam now, but before he thought he was a monster and wanted to kill him. Dean explains that the hunting gig is that you’re either covered in blood, or dying in it. He tells her that he’s good at slicing throats - he isn’t a father. He’s a killer. I SCREAM BECAUSE 15X18 AND 15X19 LEFT US A GIFT (and then 15x20, well……..doesn’t exist).

Sam tells Veritas that their lives are hard, but he and Dean watch out for each other. He’s EXTREMELY chill about the situation. Veritas listens to this calm analysis and then freaks out and accuses him of lying. She demands to know “what” he is, which is SO RUDE.

They could stick around and talk some more, but Sam’s finally done sawing through the ropes holding him down. He escapes, then Dean frees himself as well. Veritas gets stabbed first by Dean, then Sam. She perishes dramatically, but after that foe is defeated, Dean raises a knife to Sam. Dean demands the truth.

Sam reveals that he knows he is “Sam,” but he understands that there’s something wrong with him. He lied, and he let Dean get turned into a vampire because he knew there was a cure, and that Dean could fight it. He admits that old Sam wouldn’t take the risk of Dean turning forever, or killing an innocent person. Sam tells Dean he doesn’t feel anything - and this is what makes him a better hunter. Sam concludes that he needs help.

Dean knocks Sam to the ground and starts throwing several punches at him until he passes out.
