it's not disgusting, evil, or selfish to be attached to someone, to have a crush on them, love them/fall in love with them or want to, to desire someone as a close friend, to want to spend time with them and know more about them, or to generally want someone in your life. the same goes for sexual desire. these feelings aren't "impure" or otherwise "wrong" to have by any means. getting these kinds of feelings easily isn't "wrong" either, especially if it's a result of trauma or other scarring experiences that impact how we relate to others, and being "oversensitive" in relation to these feelings doesn't mean you're "broken" or inhuman in some way.

what matters is how you handle them - are you making an effort to respect their boundaries? are you giving them adequate space someone needs to be their own individual? are you putting their desires before your own as one should do when they care about someone or are you centering your own feelings? do they have an interest in doing these things with you as well? (if they don't, then you can't force it, as tough as it may be to come to terms with that sometimes.)

it takes time to learn these things, especially for those who never got to learn how to have healthy relationships the way we're supposed to, and mistakes or failures are going to happen everyone - which doesn't make you "impure" or "disgusting" or "bad" either, so long as you own up to those mistakes. still, it's worth it for one day having the kind of vulnerable, safe, and joyful relationships (romantic or otherwise) that many of us desperately crave. it's also worth reminding ourselves that even if our past may have taught us otherwise (or even if the present might reinforce it), fulfilling human connection is possible and desiring it (even very, very powerfully) is far from "wrong."

Night Parade of a Hundred Ghosts

My comic for “Queer Compassion in 15 Comics,” a collaborative anthology that blends social science and art to illustrate LGBTQ+ experiences of compassion. You can read it online for free, or purchase a physical copy at that link :)

I was asked to write a statement about this piece, which I will share here:

There are some difficult feelings in the comic about estrangement, belonging, and cultural longing. The story didn’t click for me, though, until I started reading the stories of others in the community from the research. There’s a lot of beauty in there, but there’s also a lot of hurt. I wanted to squeeze everyone’s hands and somehow find the perfect words of comfort— and isn’t that all that anyone wants to do when they see family going through it? So I started thinking of it as a call-and-response between you, at your lowest point, and the ghosts of your ancestors. If they could talk to you, what would they say? “Look—you’re safe and fed.” “You’re alive.” “How magnificent!” “You can cry, but wouldn’t it feel better if you did it in the shower?” “Now hold my hand and walk with me.” “Take care of yourself.” “Brush your teeth.” “Text her back.” “We love you.”

It’s surreal to share this. I began working with the anthology crew in 2021, towards the beginning of my undergrad. In just under a week, I’ll be graduating. This project has been living in the back of my brain for the past three years, a source of comfort and catharsis. Now we get to inflict it on all of you, hahahaha…!! Sincerely, I feel so lucky to have been able to participate in it. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who leaves their touch on this anthology— scientists, artists, interviewees, readers, and beyond.

babe wake up new squid lore just dropped

This is just me trying my damndest to rationalise inkling development, mainly how all the guts move around in the body. The internal anatomy is pretty rough, but it gets my point across.

All Inkfish hatch with only four limbs, but they eventually grow more as they get older. This totals to 8 in octolings and 10 in inklings.

the digestive and respiratory tracts are also completely separate from each other up until around age 2-3, where the trachea and esophagus fuse together and inkfish then gains the ability to speak.

Very young paralarvae are fed bits of meat as it's all they can really digest as their digestive tracts are rather short. However as the torso develops, the intestines also elongate which makes it a lot easier for the little squid to digest tougher things (like cellulose/plants and other junk). It opens up a lot more dietary options too.

They will have no problem chewing anything though, as they have very powerful and sharp beaks right from birth. And kids LOVE to chew on things, so hide your computer charger and keys. Even worse when you've got a squid with sucker claws, it's like having a boneless cat with a hyperactivity disorder and a can opener for a mouth. Nightmares.

so harlow/willow/whatever got triggered out and then dani/rowan got triggered out to comfort them/her...? or something. idk @_@

dani/rowan might be the same part i once called kel but dani seems to fit a lot better (edit: before i even finished this post 'rowan' started fitting better and now dani sounds weird...let me live dude.) they aren't old but have a motherly/feminine caretaker vibe about them and that kind of rapsy feminine "thought-voice" i like that's similar to taylor's actress from little hope (but not THAT rapsy - it sounds familiar.) a babysitter vibe moreso than something maternal, actually. maybe they hold the compassion for my traumatized parts that i normally don't have (or maybe compassion or warmth in general, with limits.) also...short hair, androgynous look, maybe a little goth/emo aesthetic but some of that might be mixed up information from blending..? very hard to tell. they remind me of the protagonist of one of my stories so i guess that character is inspired by the "mindset" they hold.

i thought harlow as a name worked for harlow but it felt weird earlier when their presence was stronger. ik names aren't majorly important but i'm mainly using them as shorthands for myself because i can't seem to shortly denote parts otherwise. that last post was more from dani or rowan or whoever that was than myself. i'm tired now and i need a nap lol.

Cas calling mc babe, telling them they look hot, and being super touchy is 💖💖💖 like I love Gabe and how respectful and sweet she is and her scenes are always breathtakingly beautiful because they hit on such a different kind of intimacy that goes hand in hand with trust and continually making the effort to double check with each other about boundaries. ESPECIALLY with history of trauma.

But there’s definitely also something to be said about someone vocalizing how much they want you and being completely unapologetic about it in their actions and their touch when they know it’s reciprocated. ANITAT JEAN!!!

Alright so the Little Wren AU is basically just 'Bruce manages to find Anita after she fakes her death' and she actually does become his first sidekick. She isn't a fighter, Bruce puts her under three layers of armor, and she basically fills a mage and healer role with first aid (mostly for civilians and criminals) and the virtual reality gas drug, the use of which allows batman to remain a cryptid for far longer.

Anita also takes longer to get the hang of grappling hooks because she's less coordinated than even Tim but she does get them probably not too long after Dick comes to the manner since the two can train together. Her inability to use grappling hooks when she first enters the field is why The Whirly-Bat was made, named The Hummingbird in this au because it's Anita's and was named before Dick was adopted into the family and took a bat-gimmick to every piece of equipment in the cave. Before he joined the team, Bruce and Anita were work shopping names for a lot of their stuff but hadn't come to decisions for most of them, so Dick still gets to do that, but not for Anita's Hummingbird.

Rather than the dynamic duo, this au has either a tritastic trio of Batman, Wren, and Robin, or the dynamic duo is seen as Wren and Robin, as Batman's sidekicks. When Tim ends up at the manner, Anita basically tells him he's too tactical to be Robin and gives him the Wren mantle, which she either had already left behind or was in the process of considering it. Steph ends ends up becoming his paired Robin, for much longer than Canon.

Steph initiating that plan that required Matches Malone probably still happens, but with Anita's help she's able to salvage it, but it opens up an entirely new set of problems because at that point Anita was already on the verge of discovering The Court of Owls (because their one give away was a nursery rhyme and she wanted to find out it's origin because it's her hobby) and now The Court sees the bat clan take control of the city basically in it's entirety so those two things combined make The Court release the elite talons. A temporary alliance with The League of Assassins and the timely first arrival of Cass in the city means they just barely manage to win. This is also the family's first introduction to Damian and a recently resurrected Jason is probably also there, but dressed like the rest of the assassins so he isn't recognized.

Anita herself, which is what this au is actually about, is going to be depicted as better adjusted due to not living her life since she was, like, eight alone and eventually dedicated to revenge. She has hyperfixations on birds, nursery rhymes, programming, and tech and is an excellent detective. I already mentioned she's less coordinated starting out but that doesn't mean she's weak, she'd probably be able to beat Dick in a fight when he first gets to the manor since he's at that point just a gymnast but she's been training as a martial artist for like six months at that point.

Speaking of Dick, I really look forward to writing their banter. They are going to be so sassy to each other but very protective of each other. Almost as much as they're both protective of every one younger siblings, which, and seeing some of your posts this may be disappointing, isn't going to be terribly long. Finding a way to fit every obscure batfam character in is for my other dc au, the same one that my ruleset for Claire's powers is for, but I do have Calvin, Charlie, and and Dana (Talon, Misfit, and Strike) as sure-shows for Little Wren.

Long-Term, the au's story-arc will focus on the eventual take down of The Parliament of Owls as the main antagonists, as it feels fitting for an Anita Jean focused story for previously stated Nursery Rhyme related reasons, although I do also plan for The League to be taken down due to Tim still having his globetrotting adventure and then the batfam actually capitalizing on it.

Edit for Addendum: the first paragraph makes it sound like Anita never fights, I should clarify that her role on the team does evolve as she gets older and Bruce becomes more lenient.
