Like in a crammed can of sardines, people tried to navigate through the crowded streets and stores. Some of them looked for last minute gifts while others enjoyed the mesmerising decorations and lights ornamenting the city that seemed even brighter and more vivid once dusk fell. Watching some of the people rush down the halls of the mall you were currently strolling through, arms packed with packages and bags, wide and frantic eyes glancing from one shop window to another, you were more than relieved that Ushijima and you belonged to the second category of people.
“Wow, good thing we bought everything at - " Losing a nearly 6’4 tall boyfriend was hard. "Toshi?" But not impossible.
Especially in a crowded place like this one. With a deep sigh, you looked around, hopefully trying to spot Ushijima somewhere in your proximity though apparently it was not going to be that simple. A young man accidentally bumped into you. The pink gift bag he was carrying slipped out of his hand, though with a hectic hand gesture he managed to grasp it before it touched the floor. “I’m so sorry, Miss!” The teenager blushed and quickly bowed his head before scurrying off.
Meanwhile somewhere in the same mall, Ushijima paced from one shop entrance to another, curiously peeking over other customers’ heads, shoulders slumping every time he did not spot you. The “E” in the corner of his phone display mocked him when he pulled it out of the pocket of his jacket, and it seemed like no store nearby offered free wifi for him to at least send you a quick message.
Of course he could have anticipated that the shopping centre would be this packed today, though when you had asked him to accompany you to get your favourite dessert from the patisserie that was supposed to be somewhere around here, Ushijima had not been able to decline.
A soft tug on his pants pulled his attention away from his phone, and instead of a bright screen, he was gazing into big, teary eyes as a little girl shyly stared up at him, her height barely reaching up to his thigh. “Um, you’re ‘Shijima-san, right?” Had he not crouched down to her height, he would have probably not even been able to hear her question over the loud Christmas music that all of a sudden started playing in the background.
“Yes.” He nodded, somehow not finding it in him to correct her mispronunciation of his name, and instead patiently waited for her to continue. “My Nii-chan always says you’re the coolest so- uh, will you help me find him and mommy?” There was a light shake in her small, gloved hands as she played with one of her dark pigtails, the glittery red bows in them sparkling with every movement of her head.
A curt nod of his was enough to make the little girl smile as if he had just now shown her the entire world, and once he picked her up like she weighed nothing to place her on his shoulders, he indeed did show her an entirely different kind of world. Ushijima’s hands swallowed her much smaller ones, making sure that she was safely positioned and holding on tight. So this is what a giant’s view looks like, she thought, completely in awe about how she could truly see everything and everyone from up there.
“Where was the last time you have been with your mom and brother?” He inquired and looked around for… not exactly sure who. A panicked looking mother? A similarly frantic looking boy? While at the same time trying to catch a glimpse of you amidst the people moving past him.
“We wanted to buy cupcakes!” Her little legs dangled excitedly down the volleyball player’s borad shoulders while she explained that her mom was planning to buy mentioned cupcakes for her fourth birthday. “But then poof! Nii-chan and mommy were gone.” She gestured with her hands as if they had disappeared into thin air.
Poof, huh? Sounded pretty familiar to him when he thought about how you were one minute walking right beside him and the next-
The phone in his pocket vibrated, and Ushijima carefully fished it out with one hand while the other made sure the girl on his shoulders would not fall over.
“Hello? Toshi, where are you?” The sound of your voice eased the tension in his shoulders and he did not dare to budge from the spot that, thank god, provided him with some decent signal.
The little girl on his shoulders involuntarily eavesdropped on the giant’s conversation since, with whoever he was talking to, the small gentle smile on his face made it obvious that talking to them made him clearly happy.
“I’m on my way to the patisserie. There’s this girl I just met and she-”
“But we have just been there? And what girl?” It was not a rare occurrence for Ushijima to get held up by fans, yet right now you really just wanted to get home as soon as possible. The crowded space and your missing boyfriend were slowly but surely getting to you and tiring you out so much that you could not help but sound a little snappy over the phone. Whatever fangirl he was dealing right now, he better-
“Love, she’s four.”
"Huh?" Oh.
You loosened the woollen scarf around your neck once you heard your boyfriend’s breathy chuckle on the other end of the line, a light heat creeping up your neck out of sheer embarrassment. Manoeuvring your way through the slowly dissipating crowd, you listened attentively to Ushijima as he explained the little girl’s predicament as well as his current location to you. Since it seemed that you were not too far away from them, you agreed on meeting them at a flower shop in front of which they were currently standing.
“Was that your girlfriend?” The little girl asked curiously once Ushijima hung up, both his hands now securely resting back on her thighs. “Did she also get lost?”
“You could say it like that. But she’ll get here soon and then we will go to look for your family together, alright?”
“Yes! Thank you, Shijima-san!” She exclaimed gratefully, her arms wrapping around his neck in a tight hug that made his heart swell. Remembering that she was now even taller than the giant himself, she figured that she could help him too find someone dear to him.  “So, what does she look like?”
“Hm? Well, she’s wearing a long coat, a thick white scarf, she has long brown-”
“Is she pretty?”
Ushijima was a little taken aback by her question, since she made it sound as if an answer to it would be more helpful to pinpoint you than a detailed description of your appearance. Yet with a deep sigh and significant warmth in his eyes, he answered truthfully. “Yes, very so.”
And somehow, as if satisfied with his answer, the little girl quietly looked ahead of herself and rested her chin on top of his head. With each passing minute, the mall got emptier, customers wrapped up their purchases before leaving, cash registers in certain shops looked less busy, and even an employee who was wearing a santa costume looked like he had finished his shift as he walked past Ushijima, waving kindly at the girl who happily reciprocated the gesture.
“There!” The girl suddenly perked up after noticing a young woman hurry towards them with a fond smile on her face.
And how could you not smile when the sight of your lover with such a sweet looking young girl perched on top of his shoulders was so endearing to you. You approached them finally and reached up to greet the girl with a light squeeze to her calf.
“I see you’ve made yourself comfortable over there. What’s your name, sweetheart?”
“Chiyo!” She answered with a bright toothy grin before she fervently started to tell you about how she had gotten lost and found "Shijima-san".
Eventually, you made yourself on the way to the patisserie where you hoped to find Chiyo’s mother and brother, since it was the only place where you could get fresh pastries at this time of the day. By the way she clung to Ushijima, you could tell that she had warmed up to him pretty fast, and the same could be said about him. He looked so effortlessly handsome as he carried the child in a way that you would think he had never done anything else in his life. In a way that made you wonder what it would be like to have your own little gremlin sit on top of him and call him a “giant”.
Warmth suddenly engulfed your left hand, and his rare physical display of affection astonished you a slightest bit. But as he squeezed your hand gently, his thumb stroking the back of it back and forth, he simply stated matter-of-factly.
“Don’t want to lose you again.”
Right, Mr. Shijima, you thought knowingly. Admitting that your short lived disappearance had made him feel uncomfortable and that going through the same dilemma would probably make him age a few months more- that was definitely not something he was going to admit today.
However, when he had to put Chiyo back down and watch her run over to her Nii-chan, who coincidentally was the same young man who had earlier bumped into you, Ushijima had to admit that he was a little dejected about the fact that his adventure with the little girl was over so soon.

I just saw this ask on my dashboard and uuuuuuuhhhh.... felt inspired to write a thing real quick. __________________
"Hey Mario, can I ask you something?"
"Oh! Uh, hold on Lu." Mario paused his videogame, setting the controller aside to give his brother his full attention. "What's going on?" Though he feigned ignorance, he knew there was something important on Luigi's mind. Lu had awoken that morning chipper, but had grown quiet and solemn as the day wore on, like something heavy was bearing down on him. Mario believed it was only a matter of time before he confessed to some silly, expensive mistake... that he had accidentally broken an appliance or lost something important... that was usually the explanation for this sort of behavior. "It... well, it's less a question than it is that I want you to promise me something."
"Promise what?" Mario cocked his head curiously, poised to give his word on whatever it was his little brother was building up to. Luigi took a deep breath. "If it comes down to me or Princess Peach, I want you to promise me you'll choose Peach."
Mario's smile vanished. He tensed up, looking at Luigi with a blank expression as he attempted to wrap his head around what was just said, until he burst out– a little louder than intended– "What are you talking about?! Where did this come from?!" "I was just thinking! I-if there was a situation where we both needed help, or were in trouble or something, you'll make sure she's okay before you make sure I'm okay." Luigi stuttered, rubbing the tops of his hands as he felt the mood of the room shift. "She is royalty, you know, and now that you're the hero of The Mushroom Kingdom..." "What, you think I'm not strong enough to protect you both?" Mario asked, attempting a joking tone as he lightly shoved his brother's arm. Luigi didn't waver, reaching over and catching hold of the hand that shoved him, holding it tight.
"You've been protecting me my entire life Mario. I've got to figure out how to protect myself eventually." He pleaded, "I just want to know that, if it means The Princess' safety, you'll have enough faith in me to try and save myself."
Mario paused at this, his gaze drifting down to the floor in thought. Luigi's worried look bothered him, but Mario maintained a grip on his hand while an unwanted lump began forming in his throat. At length, he finally relaxed and lifted his eyes back up, shining with determination. "Wait a minute, we're both heroes here, it's not fair you put all this on me. Let's make a deal: I promise I'll prioritize Peach if you promise to do the same thing. If she's ever in trouble, she comes first, no matter what."
Luigi narrowed his brow at this, but in time he smiled– Mario's same smile– the anxious smile of two brothers caught up in the same fear. "I promise."
"Then..." Mario steadied himself. He did not give his word lightly. If he agreed to this there was no going back. No changing his mind. But that was alright! He meant what he said earlier... he could protect them both!
He had to protect them both. "... I promise too."

(Sorry if I took a while to reply, I had no connection for the whole day until now) Well, I just found this blog last year and yes, I knew from the get-go that you’re a spirit. So I figured out what happened, when I was reading your “lore” comics, there was one made by Sargassos which featured their moose character Hollow interacting with you which I mistook as yours. In the comic, there was a panel in which Hollow crosses a road with a broken-down car in it. That gave me the impression that the forest you’re living in has a road in which cars frequently pass by. Since you’re a forest spirit, I thought cars were an out-of-this-world thing for you and made me think they would spark your curiousity, and as you would approach one and inspect it from up-close, at some point you would end up seeing yourself reflected in one of the side view mirrors and be mesmerized by it. Which I thought would be a cute/funny scene to see/imagine. And that’s what made me ask you if you would do such a thing. So yeah, the source to all of this confusion was I misread a fan comic as yours, which understandably, you have the final word if that comic is canon or not. I apologize for this long read and for the confusion but rest assured that this is the definitive answer of what was going on.

Oh dear. This is a lot. Well, time for a little clarification! Ah well to answer your question, I do know the story you are referring to (shameless plug here bc you should def check it out cause the artist is aaaaamaaazzing!~) While the story wasnt told by myself, it is still accurate. I live in a deep forest, but being that it is a Nation Forest, there are areas where there are roads and cars do travel, expect the areas that I frequent, cars are usually parked far away at a type of "rest point" and then humans must travel by foot if they want to go deeper into the forest. I am aware of what cars are- Im aware of technology in general! I was curious about them for a while when they started appearing up here but they are also very noisy and smelly so I tend to leave them alone. I dont think that humans would really appreciate having a fox walk over their cars (im sure they are expensive, dont want to accidentally break something! Yikes!) I think another thing that might clear up the confusion is that you have to remember that my forest is a place that many creatures also travel to- living or spectral. Hallow lead that spirit to me as she was worried for him, and she wanted to make sure that spirit would be able to get back home safely. Where the poor creature met his fate was somewhere else from here. Cars traveling up here dont normally (or shouldnt be!) driving that fast as to take out a full grown moose. As far as the mirror part, I mean- hah~, I already know my fur is flawless, but I couldnt even reach a rearview mirror! Im too short ^^;

Chapter One:Moment to last

Tumblr media
It was officially the first day of matric as I was on my way to my next class, which I was already late to. On my way a few people greeted me as I walked past. I wasn't necessarily popular but known well enough by a few people and their friends who I played hockey with previous years.
Hastily I entered the already semi full IT classroom in front of me and I felt various pairs of eyes burn through my skull. Silence filled the room as I walked in with about ten boys staring me up and down. I looked up and my eyes met with his. Our teacher. Mr Schoeman. His shoulders were broad and seemed to carry him with an authority that made it known not to question him. "Thank you for joining us " he said calmly as sudden chills ran down my spine. He gave a small grin, inviting me in. To my surprise no other desks were available except for the one closest to him. I continued walking towards the front of the classroom.
Stress coursed through my veins as it was my first year taking IT and I was forced to leave physics. Unfortunately, no other teacher would take me this late in my school career but the only problem I had with IT was the struggle of understanding the work and the wavering fear of failing the class on my last year of school.
I sat down at the desk in front of him, he glanced at me, and he gave a warming smile which I returned back to him. The next few minutes of class a few boys kept asking questions about me which seemed to be getting rather personal and which led to a surge of uncomfortableness that roamed my body. The sudden fall of a pen was heard hitting the floor and I turned my head to see where the noise was coming from. Mr Schoeman must have accidentally dropped his pen as he was now crouched down in front of my desk, only mere inches away from my legs that were crossed under the table. He stood back up and for a moment and I could have sworn he held a strong gaze on my legs before completely standing up giving me that innocent sweet smile again.
The bell eventually rang indicating for us to be dismissed. I heard the faint sounds of footsteps behind me as I grabbed my books turning around. "I'd like to see you for a moment if that's not a problem" Teacher Schoeman said softly as he placed a hand on my shoulder. My grip around my books tightened and I took a deep breath while slowly nodding my head. He removed his hand off my shoulder and he walked towards his desk. I exhaled and slowly followed behind him not saying a word. "Quite quiet, are we?" he asked jokingly as he sat down at his desk turning his chair to face me. Shaking his head as his own comment he spoke again softly " Sorry, you're probably wondering why I asked you here?" he chuckled as he sat up leaning towards me. "Oh yes uh... how could I help you Sir?" I asked politely as he smiled at me not breaking eye contact even for a moment. "How far behind are you with catching up on all the work?" he asked with a serious expression plastered on his face. I began to panic as I was not yet done with the work I was provided with because I had difficulties understanding it. "Well, I must admit I'm having difficulty understanding some of the work, but I was going to ask one of the boys to explain it to me."
He stood up from his chair. His tall frame towering over me as I looked up at him. He seemed to develop an irritated expression once I brought up my struggles about the work. "No..." he said sternly, and I looked down at the floor avoiding all eye contact. His tone quickly changed as he finished his sentence. "If you need help regarding the work, you can ask me. They're not too trustworthy when it comes to schoolwork" he spoke softly as he smiled. "Oh and..." he started his sentence as he then took my hand in his. I was caught off guard by this action as I gazed up to him curiously. "If any of these immature students are bothering you or being inappropriate again you can tell me "He spoke softly, almost a whisper next to my ear. Just as he finished his sentence one of the teachers entered into the classroom. He drops my hand immediately as if it was out of pure instinct and greeted her, but his eyes never leaving mine. "I need to go" I said quickly as I turned around walking away with a steady pace not looking back. I greeted the teacher and finally made my way out of the class.
Thoughts raced in my mind about the recent interaction with Mr Schoeman and why he acted strange once the teacher entered the classroom. The events kept replaying in my mind never coming to a rest...

Haunting - Part 11
Summary: a family visit and an unexpected visitor from the Netherworld. BJ’s free trial of life is set to expire.
Read Part 10 here
Read Part 12 here
Somewhere along the line, you realised that you were beginning to enjoy having another person to share the house with. Despite your misgivings about Betelgeuse early on, you were more than delighted to find that you got along quite well together as friends.
You rarely felt lonely anymore and the house was never quiet because Lawrence never ran out of things to say, regardless of whether he was talking to you or himself or the odd cat that mysteriously ended up being fed tuna (which you didn’t buy) every once in a while.
Now, things were finally settling down into a pattern of normalcy for the both of you; with Lawrence landing a job as an apprentice at the local tailor shop and your family coming over to stay, things were finally beginning to look up.
You were cooking up a storm in the kitchen with Beej hanging over your shoulder like a wolf, hungering after any little morsel of taste-tester-food that he could get his hands on. Cooking was still a skill he had yet to master, and despite the major improvement from his first try that nearly burnt down the kitchen, you still banned him from helping out that night, bidding him watch you work instead.
He gave you company, like a somewhat uninvited shadow that trailed you wherever you went and today, he was telling yet another story of his time making “nachos” with Katherine Hepburn. Whether or not those were actually nachos they made, you didn’t really want to find out considering that “baby oil” struck an honourable mention as an ingredient. You had half an ear to listen, giving little noises of affirmation as he continued on, occasionally holding up a spoonful of whatever you were making for him to try which he latched on to immediately like a fish on a line.
“Ooh hoh hoh! BABY! That’s delectable right there, I’m telling ya! You sure know how to make a guy fall head over heels for ya!”
“What can I say, the key to the heart is through the stomach!” Playfully you slapped his tummy as you moved to set the spoon aside.
“Can’t complain, babes. Who taught you to cook anyway?”
“My mother did!”
“EUGCH.” Betelgeuse nearly gagged on his own spit.
“Oh come on, not every mother is abusive and crushes their kid’s self esteem on a daily basis Beej. Give her a chance!” You chided.
The sound of the doorbell echoed down the hallway. “Oh! They’re early!” You stared down at your hands, covered in meat juice from the chicken you had just begun to marinade. “Uhh, Beej, can you do me a favour and get the door for me please? Just act natural!”
“... you trust me to open the door for your parents?” Betelgeuse eyed you curiously.
“Yeah?” You confirmed like it was the most trivial thing in the world and he was asking a question like ‘why is water wet?’.
“Why’re you asking?”
“Oh ya know I figured because of my past history of accidentally terrifying the delivery guys, I wouldn’t have the greatest track record for opening doors in a non-threatening way. Aren’t you afraid I’m gonna scare em off with how weird I am?”
“I trust you not to do that. You got that job didn’t you? That just proves your social skills have gotten significantly better.”
“Ok then, but if they go running, it’s not on me!”
“Right on, hotshot! They won’t run, you got this!”
Shuffling to the front door, Betelgeuse could feel his palms getting uncharacteristically clammy as he reached for the knob before taking a deep breath and pulling it open abruptly.
“Oh! Hello! We’re looking for Y/N, we’re their parents. I don’t think we’ve met before?” They were a little shocked by how violently he had jerked open the door, but apart from that, all seemed well. So far.
“Oh, right! Well it’s great to meet you too, I’m Lawrence, Y/N’s uh... housemate!”
You had discussed with Betelgeuse about who he should be introduced to them as. Telling them that you were now shotgun married to him and had been for the past couple months, was a ballsy option that would likely be taken as “troubling news” instead of “welcome news” and so you both decided to settle on the title of “housemate” instead. Non-threatening, totally normal, always-has-been-human-his-entire-life housemate.
“Well this is a surprise! They were never one to keep housemates, you’re the first we’ve seen!” A moment of awkward silence passed as Betelgeuse stood eye to eye with your parents in the doorway. Clearing her throat, she spoke up, “well, uh, Lawrence, do you think you could let us in to see them?”
“Huh? Oh yeah! Right this way! They’re in the kitchen!”
—-
The dinner went on as well as well could be, and best of all to your surprise, your parents got along surprisingly well with Lawrence. You were content in that moment, the people who made you happiest in your life gathered together with you. You were sure to snap a picture of the moment to frame for later.
But unbeknownst to the happy little gathering, a storm was about to crash.
The sudden drop in temperature in the room sent chills down your spine and you were reminded of the time it announced Betelgeuse’s arrival when he was still dead.
“Oh no.”
Watching the colour drain from Betelgeuse’s face, you could tell that something was most definitely very very wrong. The horror in your parent’s faces told the same story. Something or rather someone which you suspected was not of the living was here.
Swivelling, you were met with a steely eyed lady dressed immaculately in a red suit jacket and pencil skirt. Her eyebrows, drawn high and tight to follow her natural brow line made her look like she was incensed. Between her tiny lips which she constantly pursed into an eternal pout, she took a puff from a smoking cigar, exhaling the smoke from a jagged bloody opening across her throat.
There was a moment of silence as she reluctantly dropped her cigar and stamped it forcefully into the wood floor, mushing it in with her heel until nothing but a mangled mess of what it once had been remained, squashed like a clove of ashy garlic.
Betelgeuse broke out into a cold sweat and swallowed, trying to force a shaky smile. “Mummm! Haha...”
Juno.
“LAWRENCE.” Leaning forward like she might nearly topple onto the dining table, she planted a hand on your chair and pointed another toward the offending person, her hooked nails seeming almost clawed. You gulped at the unexpected proximity. Taking a whiff, you could smell the strong tobacco staining her clothing along with a hint of mothballs and very powdery perfume.
“YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING BOY, I SHOULD’VE KNOWN YOU WERE UP TO NO GOOD. YOU KNOW HOW MUCH PAPERWORK THIS HAS CAUSED ME??!”
You wondered briefly if this was her normal volume of speaking. Across from you, Lawrence was not doing well at all, shrinking into his seat like a flower wilting under Juno’s gaze.
“WELL IT DOESNT MATTER NOW. IM HERE TO DELIVER A MANDATORY NOTICE AS AN IMMEDIATE DIRECTIVE FROM THE HIGHER UPS IN THE NETHERWORLD.”
“What’s wrong?” Betelgeuse asked, confused.
Reaching into the blazer pocket, she procured a sealed letter and placed it in front of you.
“WHAT’S WRONG? WHAT’S WRONG?? ARE YOU TELLING ME YOU DON’T KNOW BOY?UNDER THE ‘ACT OF UNHOLY MARRIAGE BETWEEN THE LIVING AND THE DEAD’ SECTION 214.13.6 OF THE HANDBOOK FOR THE RECENTLY DECEASED IT STATES THAT THE UNION OF UNHOLY MATRIMONY MUST BE CONSUMMATED WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF THE MARRIAGE CEREMONY OR THE MARRIAGE WILL BE CONSIDERED NULL AND YOUR STATUS AS A LIVING PERSON WILL BE REVOKED INDEFINITELY.”
“WAIT A MINUTE, my handbook never had that clause in it. It isn’t mentioned.”
“WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU READ THROUGH THAT DANG HANDBOOK? THEY UPDATED IT IN 1764. BUT YOU WOULDN’T KNOW THAT BECAUSE YOU THINK ‘I KNOW THIS BOOK BACK TO FRONT’.” Swaying exaggeratedly side to side, she mockingly imitated his cocky swagger.
“By ‘consummate’.. what exactly does that involve?” Now it was your turn to shake like a leaf as Juno glared daggers into you. The severity of the situation had just ramped up by 100.
“YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANS. BUT.. A KISS WITH THE CONSENSUAL INTENT OF ROMANTIC LOVE WILL SUFFICE.”
“Oh, a kiss? Easy. Come here, Beej.” Without hesitating, you leaned over the table, to give him a quick peck on the lips, turning back around to see if it satisfied the hawk-eyed civil servant perched behind you.
“NO. IT HAS TO BE WITH THE INTENT OF ROMANTIC LOVE. YOU’LL KNOW WHEN YOU’VE SUCCEEDED.”
Whatever did that mean?
Betelgeuse’s heart sank, crushed under the weight of his mother’s judgement and the realisation that you didn’t feel that way about him. Holding him in her severe gaze, Juno addressed her son again, laughing at the look of despair on his face.
She was right. Who would ever want to love him?
“WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT LOVE HUH? YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO FIND IT. HAH. YOU’VE JUST EXPOSED THIS AS THE PAPER MARRIAGE IT IS. NONETHELESS, YOU HAVE ONE MONTH LEFT BEFORE YOUR TIME IS UP. ENJOY YOUR BRIEF LIFE, LAWRENCE.”
Cackling, she began to fade away into a nondescript wave of smoke.
You began running your mouth, the minute she was out of sight.
“Oh my god. That woman has some gall to come in here insulting you like that!” You scowled, in distaste. “One day, we’ll show her. But we have to check over the handbook she was talking about, I don’t want any more hidden surprises... Lawrence?”
You didn’t think you had ever seen him cry before, but here he was, sniffling, trying to disappear into his chair. “It’s no use. How could you ever love me?”
“Don’t day that! You’re my best friend, Beej! We can find some other way maybe. Investigate a bit.” You said hopefully. You never intended or expected to remain married or to fall in love with Betelgeuse and this news had hit you like a roundhouse kick in the guts.
“Hey,” you said, coming over to hug him and as you did, you lowered your voice to whisper in his ear. “We still have month. A lot can happen in a month... and maybe love is on the table too. Nothing’s set in stone, Beej. So let’s pick ourselves up and solve this problem. Together.”
‘You really shouldn’t be giving a dying man false hope.” He said hoarsely between sobs.
‘Who’s to say the hope is false? All we can do is do what we can to the best of our ability and the rest is to hoping.”
Your parents, stricken from what had just transpired stated wide eyed at you. Suddenly your mum cleared her throat. “So... When were you going to tell us that you got married?”
You were in for a long night of explanations.

Werewolf, vampire, lich, and the fox Ch.3
Sasuke's room was almost made up of black, white and blue, except for the red curtains, which were placed along the wall.
"Sasuke-kun, you can use this to clean a little, I will help you to carefully observe the wound later.
"Ah...Sakura."
Sasuke's kaleidoscope bloodshot eyes did not disappear, Sakura just gently brushed away the hair on Sasuke's forehead, not avoiding the gaze from her beloved
"Is there anything you want to say, Sasuke?
"I will win next time."
But after understanding Sasuke's logic like a paper clip, Sakura could only reply with a smile
"I believe Sasuke-kun will win."
"And... thank you."
She turned her head away, unwilling to admit the embarrassment of being paralyzed on the bed, leaving Sakura to serve her, but she had to deliver the message, so all Sakura could see was Sasuke's red ears and red neck.
"I'm Sasuke's destined bride, I'm willing to do it.
Sakura was more and more gentle in her movements, and after cleaning all the dirt, this time Sakura focused more on cleaning the infected part of the wound.
Sasuke was silent, staring at the long pink-haired Albire in silence, his soft expression even forcing out the blood-red color of his eyes, leaving only the intense ink color reflecting Sakura's figure.
The black shadow brought the two vials of medicine
"Sakura," Shikamaru's black shadow reached out and knocked on the door
"Shikamaru?"
"The jar on the left is St. John's Wort essential oil, and the jar on the right is Bone Water, you should know how to use it."
"Yes, but the bone water?"
"The blood family can heal the wound automatically, but it will take a long time, so Sasuke asked me to make the bone water, probably tomorrow morning, the left hand will grow back. But you can't use it as you wish, you have to fix it for at least three days.
The first thing you need to do is to take a look at the person who has been caught out, and Shikamaru is very thorough in selling out her teammates.
"Sasuke-kun?" I don't know the intricacies in between, but after hearing this, Sakura looked at the person in question with a complicated expression
"Sakura ......"
"How long will it take for the wound to heal itself?
"...eight days."
Sakura Haruno felt her anger and powerlessness levels were rising so fast because of Sasuke Uchiha that she even laughed.
The ability to maintain the integrity of the body is the highest blessing from the gods for those who learn medical magic.
"Sasuke-kun,"
"If you let the wound heal itself, will there be any symptoms? I think the pain and itching from the wound and the high fever will not go away.
But apparently the Blood had his own reasons, he just softened his tone as if to please
"Sakura."
From the past to the present, what Haruno Sakura couldn't resist the most was Uchiha Sasuke calling her name in such a tone
It was as natural as a kitten wanting to be close to its protector, and with a faint trembling tail, it went straight to the deepest part of Haruno Sakura's heart
She took a deep breath, opened the medicine and handed it over to Sasuke "I want to see you finish it and then do as I say until your hand is intact.
"Okay." I'm not going to be able to do that.
Before falling asleep, Sasuke called out to Sakura Haruno one last time
"Sakura ......"
"I'm here, Sasuke-kun, what's wrong?"
The answer to Sakura's call was Sasuke Uchiha's serene sleeping face, and the corner of his mouth curled up.
Tumblr media
The shadows merged again without a sound, Shikamaru led Temari around the west side of the castle, while also forgetting to explain the general rules of living here shallow
"The spells and magic there are much more elaborate and complex, and if you accidentally encounter any accidents, I can hardly guarantee that I can save you at the first opportunity."
They are in the herb greenhouse on the first floor of the west wing, and hand bowed curiously against the glass of the greenhouse, watching all kinds of exotic plants
"Did you grow all of these yourself?"
"I guess so. ...... Occasionally, Kakashi and Sasuke come to help. But Sasuke only cares about his tomatoes."
"Sasuke grows tomatoes? I thought Bloods couldn't see sunlight?
"Is that a tomato? I can't remember the full name, but it's a special food for the Bloods, and it only grows at night, so there's no sunlight in that greenhouse.
The heavy iron door was still locked, and the breeze brought a hint of fishy smell.
"The second floor on the west side is a recreation room, and there are two large bathhouses that you can come and use later.
The right side of the map showed the names and locations of several people, and the room where the silver-throated long-tailed tits were located was labeled "Bird".
"I wonder how she is doing now?
Shikamaru just shrugged at the sound of Temari's mumbling.
"Don't worry too much about her, this castle will take care of her.
"Huh? But I don't see anyone else in this castle."
Shikamaru paused as he walked up the stairs, bending down so that Temari could make out almost every detail of his features
"That's because you haven't seen what this castle can do, she looks after us like a mother.
The meaning of Shikamaru's words could not be recognized for a while, and Temari just opened his mouth slightly, dumbfounded, and met Shikamaru's eyes
"Don't worry, since you are still standing here, it means that the castle approves of you, you will gradually understand.
Shikamaru straightened his back, he took Temari's hand and continued to walk towards the third floor
"If you're worried, go take a look.
I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get a good deal on this.
"This is the shortcut to the North Hall, only certain people can pass through it, try it.
With anxiety and excitement about the unknown, Temari put her hand on it.
A white light flashed, and when I opened my eyes again, the wooden door in front of me was restored to its normal appearance, but with an additional line on the door panel
Welcome, Temari!
"How is it?"
Touching the beautiful writing on the door panel, Temari could not hide her surprise
"It's...interesting."
Pushing open the small door, Temari found that the North Hall was connected to the West Hall at the corner of the corridor where they met Kakashi
"Is there any other shortcut in this castle?"
Shikamaru just pretended to be mysterious
"You can explore it yourself later, but the four of us haven't found it all yet.
At Shikamaru's words, Temari's eyes seemed to be lit up with fighting spirit, and his dazzling soul made Kagome smile.
"The fourth bride is still sleeping, right?
Tumblr media
Kakashi left through a small door at the back of the castle and went to the pine forest in the north.
The journey was silent, and the occasional animals, such as snowshoe hares and squirrels, all fled in fear and trepidation.
In the cave near the mountain area, only a few male wolves were guarding the entrance of the cave.
Kakashi crouched down and let the wolves lift his head from the bottom to the top and lick his jaw and side neck
"Yusuke, Urusei, Parker, have the rest of the pack gone hunting?"
The wolves nodded meekly, one of them had an earthy yellow fur, and the fluffy fur around his eyes made him look like he was squinting, he sniffed Kakashi's palm gently
"Wow! You brought a female back? And more than one, but this smell ... is not the female who was chasing after other males? So, you have this special hobby, chief...!"
"What are you talking about? Sakura is my student; do I look like the kind of perverted delinquent who would hit on his lovely female student?
"I should say I wouldn't be surprised if I did."
The yellow-furred wolf bristled and replied without hesitation
"Yayasuke!"
The wolf with the black stripes on the top of his head hurriedly warned his companions, although he knew the pattern of the relationship between the chief and Yaysuke, every time he saw it, he would unconsciously feel a cold sweat.
Kakashi calmly patted the gray wolf's head
"Don't worry about it, Uluhi. I know Yaysuke's personality, he won't get angry over this little thing."
"But chief, how is the female you found at that time?
Kakashi replied carelessly as he took out a comb to help comb the wolves' fur
"The first time I saw her, I was able to see her, but it will take time for her wings to heal.
"I hope the female can pull through, she is the future chief lady after all.
"The chief lady...? I'm not sure if it's the right one, but I'm not sure if it's a mockingbird, so if I'm wrong, I'll lose out.
The hand combing the hair paused for a second as Kakashi thought back to the curse of the goddess Unagi.
A series of rapid footsteps and hunter's gasp came from the distance, Kakashi clapped his hands and stood up
The wolf in the lead was so tall that it stood up to almost reach Kakashi's chest, dropping the moose it was dragging in its mouth, its tail hanging low and its ears submissively facing backwards
"Kakashi, why did you have time to come to us today?
"Hey, I wanted to say it's winter, so I came to do a little inspection. How's the colony?"
He was rejected and began to lower his head, gnawing on the prey.
"The last hunt to the Land of Snow, six young male wolves died; then recently the lynx clan began to show signs of activity around the territory, just now when hunting, found a wolf pack has signs of invasion, the parents have been killed by the lynx, Ai and I arrived when only this child.
The wolf with the cat's whiskers was holding a wolf cub in its mouth, and the cub was trembling under Kakashi's scrutinizing gaze with its tail between its legs.
"Am I that scary?"
"Every newborn wolf cub is like this when it sees you, Kakashi, not like a wolf at all.
"Yusuke, please stop saying that ......"
Towards evening, Kakashi was about to return to the castle when the smallest wolf called out to Kakashi
"If the situation permits, bring that female, it's not easy to integrate with the wolves.
"Ah, thanks for the offer, Parker."
The biggest one, Bru, was lying on his back at the entrance of the cave where the female was playing with her cubs, and Bru was squinting lazily.
"Hey, Parker, are you really going to let the alpha bring that female here? Didn't the goddess say that the leader was looking for a robin?"
One of the wolves asked Parker, who had just returned, curiously
"I don't know, but Kakashi said that all the mockingbirds that he had looked for before were not, and that the mirror of the eye of reincarnation and the brand of his left eye were also responsive to that woman. And then again, I don't think Kakashi will bring her in any time soon.
The young wolf rescued from the other wolf's den was misty-eyed and turned over on the cloak left by Kakashi to go back to sleep.
"Although the cubs are instinctively afraid, they are very dependent on Kakashi's scent.
"How should I put it, it's the smell of hay, it's very warm.
"But we may not be able to hunt, guard and teach our cubs how to hunt at the same time.
The eight adult male wolves looked at each other, and then Brue walked back into the den and made his final decision
"Then let Kakashi experience what it's like to be a nanny.

Happy 28th! Here are all the lovely fics I read in March:
Sunny Pleasure | jaerie | a/b/o knotting - pregnancy kink - unplanned pregnancy - accidental bonding - secret relationship - smut - 4k They've been hiding their accidental bond since Harry was 16 and Louis was 18. Now they're pregnant and it's almost time to break the news so they don't have to keep hiding anymore. They take some soft time to themselves first.
Love On A G String | jacaranda_bloom | strangers to lovers - famous/not famous - smut - 20k “How much longer did you say you were on holiday for?” Louis furrows his brows, tilting his head curiously at Niall. “Another month. Brisbane and then over to NZ. Why?” The devilish smile that curls Niall’s lips is enough to increase Louis’ heart rate. “Fancy swapping your backpacking accommodation and economy airfares for 5-star hotels and business class flights?” Louis feels his eyes nearly bug out of his head and even though he thinks he knows where this is going, he still asks, “What’re you saying, Nialler?” “I’m saying… How would you like to be the replacement guitar tech on Harry Styles’ tour?” OR the one where Harry is a rock star on a world tour, Niall is his tech crew manager, Liam is his tour manager, and Louis is in the right place at the right time.
Love Is a Winning Game | Rearviewdreamer | break up - fake/pretend relationship - exes to lovers - couples gameshow - reconciliation - 47k Before their broken engagement, Harry had his head stuck so far in the clouds that he doesn’t even remember entering him and Louis for something as crazy as a couple's gameshow until a series of bad, post-breakup decisions puts Harry in the awkward position of needing the help of his ex-fiancé to try and fix the mess he has made.
Mr. Tuesday | jaerie | sex work - prostitution - brothels - religion - consensual sex - closeted character - cheating - forced marriage - off-screen relationship - smut - 7k Tuesday. Harry loved Mr. Tuesday. It was true that most of his clients were regulars, but there was just something about Mr. Tuesday that would make him stand out amongst the others even if he hadn’t booked almost every single Tuesday with him for the past year. It was the first day of Harry’s work week and Mr. Tuesday always eased him into it in such a pleasant way.
The Risen (series) | creamcoffeelou | a/b/o - cults - rape/non-con elements - 1970s - initiation rituals - mating rituals - forced bonding - mind manipulation - gaslighting - Dead Dove: Do Not Eat- 20k I: In search of the next breaking story, Harry goes off to do something no one else has been able to do: get the scoop on Louis Tomlinson and his devoted group of followers. II: Somewhere deep in the Colorado rockies, Harry found a family. A purpose. A home.
Wild Love + Never Slows Down | purpledaisy | friends to lovers - fake/pretend relationship - secret relationship - 159k Wild Love: “Good,” Julia says, clearly pleased to have them both uncomfortable and unable to look at each other. “Now, I only have one more question before you can go. What are you planning to do when this experiment ruins your friendship?” “We said we’d stay friends no matter what,” Harry says smoothly, his chin lifting in defense. “That was our one thing going into it,” Louis agrees. “Stay friends no matter what.” Julia raises a perfectly manicured brow, “That’s all fine and good. But I hope you realize your emotions aren’t going to realize this is an experiment in the end. If one of you falls for the other and finds out those feelings are not reciprocated, you’re not going to be able to laugh it off as a social experiment. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this, I’m just hoping you’ve considered all of the possible outcomes.” - Two best friends try to date each other for forty days. It's supposed to be fun until emotions make it complicated. Never Slows Down: “Maybe we should just have one place instead,” he says. “Just move in together.” It’s heavier out loud, the first time either one of them has made an outright mention of it. Harry keeps his back turned, the running water of the sink the only sound. Louis wants to say something stupid, something like, “Just kidding,” or, “Wait, no, that’s not what I meant,” but he doesn’t. Now, out loud, lingering, he doesn’t want to change the words he’s just said or the implication. It must only be a few seconds but it feels like a lifetime before Harry turns off the water and turns to face him again. He swallows and shrugs, “Uh, yeah, maybe.” He meets Louis’s eyes only briefly before checking his watch. “We should go soon,” he says turning to leave the kitchen. “I’ll grab you a jacket.”
there now, steady love (so few come and don't go) | we_are_the_same | college/university - supernatural elements - fantasy - past Louis/OMC - past character death - depression - suicidal thoughts - angst - hurt/comfort - emotional hurt/comfort - healing - strangers to lovers - friends to lovers - PTSD - panic attack - 42k It becomes just another fact of life. Will.” Louis jerked away. “Don’t call me that,” he hissed. “‘S not my fucking name.” He closed his eyes and pulled his knees up to his chest, wanting to disappear. “Alright.” The reply was unsure but steady. “Louis. It’s Louis.” or louis is one of many children stolen from their families to be raised by the upper class of the inner circle. he's pretended to be what they wanted for the last sixteen years. the only respite from that lie comes in the stolen moments he shares with harry styles, son of premier styles. their relationship has always been purely physical, but when louis' resolve begins to crumble and surviving isn't enough, the lines begin to blur for them both.
Fate & Chance | zanni_scaramouche | historical - The Illusionist AU - magicians - mystery - thriller - ghosts - magic - magic realism - suicide (of minor character) - angst - no smut - 32k Haunted by his own ghost, the Duke von Tomlin fears for his safety and sanity as the days tick down to his certain engagement with the Crown Prince of Vienna. Meanwhile the travelling magician Hassenheim takes residency in a well established theatre, drawing mass crowds with his awe-inspiring illusions. Is it fate or chance that entwines their paths?
Manners and Misjudgements | bluegreenish | regency - a/b/o - mating - arranged marriage - enemies to lovers - smut - 21k “Everyone you mention the Duke to raves about him, just like you are defending him now. But no one looks behind the façade he so ably maintains to deceive you all.” Liam sighs deeply. “You sound like a crazy man right now, Louis.” “I will prove to you who the Duke really is, just wait.” or, the one where Harry is the Duke everyone loves, but Louis thinks he's too nice and decides he's going to figure out what the Duke is hiding. Spoiler: nothing, he's just nice and perhaps a bit clumsy.
you're an alpha, harry! | fondjumpedtheshark | collge/university - a/b/o - fluff - humor - inspired by Sex Education (TV) - smut - 33k So, yeah. Harry Styles? He's an alpha. And he has no clue what that entails. - [or: Right before Harry goes to university, he presents as an alpha. Struggling with his newfound identity in a completely different environment, he seeks advice from the notorious Louis Tomlinson, an omega whose claim to fame is being the local campus sex expert. Sex Education AU.]
Enchanted | brightgolden | strangers to lovers - mpreg - pining - neighbors - lactation kink - smut - 25k “My close friends usually call me H,” Harry mumbles suddenly after Louis wraps up his story. That’s unexpected. “Are you telling me I’m your close friend now?” Louis quips, squinting his eyes at Harry. OR Where Louis finally meets his neighbour. After a few conversations, he begins to realise he is too weak to resist the charms of the new mother and his six month old daughter.

for a feral yuu, may i ask a headcanon of that with octavinelle? thank you
Content warning: Slight Suggestive Themes, Slight Monster Body Horror
Feral Yuu with the Octavinelle Dorm
Tumblr media
Yuu was definitely an enigma that caught Azul’s eye. Despite having no magic, there was something– off about the newcomer. They had an edge to them that reminded them of a shark waiting in the deep shadows of his home waters, eyeing prey from a safe distance.
Azul’s curiosity would get the better of him. What was Yuu hiding? And was it precious for him to exploit it? Azul would do his usual routine of having his Tweels do recon while he himself slipped close to Yuu and tried to butter them up.
What Azul wasn’t counting on was one day being pinned against the wall by Yuu with a dangerous glint in their eye. “What’s your angle, Ashengrotto? You’ve been keepin’ close to me ever since I got here. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re trying to be cute with me.”
C-Cute!? Absolutely not! That’s far off the mark! But Azul’s mind would screech to stop the second he sees Yuu’s tongue slip out. A long, long tongue that licks at their chops and he sees the rows of serrated teeth. “...Not that I mind you hangin’ off me. You’re very easy on the eye. Not to mention, you smell incredibly delicious…”
What fresh hell did he accidentally step into…? What he thought could’ve been an interesting contract has now turned into a cat-and-mouse game between him and Yuu. Yuu constantly tries to fluster him, cornering him to be alone, and saying some rather– interesting things that border between lascivious or morbid.
He hates it first, despising that someone would dare try to push their sway over him. He is defiant and that’s what Yuu loves. However there is a deep side of him that finds this game exhilarating. To be desired so shamelessly and aggressively, it makes his heart race. A secret he keeps close to himself is hoping that Yuu keeps chasing him down, maybe just enough to wear him down, and he’d happily let this hunter have his heart.
Tumblr media
Jade started to be interested in Yuu the moment he saw their strange behavior. Eating less than normal meals like raw meats and bones, their glee in scaring hapless students, and acting more like a beast than a human. All while being magicless.
Jade would start to interact with Yuu at certain intervals. Not too much, but not too fleeting of interactions. Jade would offer some food, maybe praise, maybe help with school work. On the surface it seems like Jade is trying to act nice but to him, these are efforts in trying to bring the beast out of hiding.
He is a creature of intrigue. He likes the challenge of it all, wanting to see what makes people or things tick. What make Yuu behave they do? Yuu is a question that Jade is having fun trying to answer.
However, Yuu is not something to be easily tamed and they would call Jade the hell out. I’d imagine it’d be in the waning hours of Mostro Lounge. Customers are dwindling and at this point, Yuu and Jade are alone.
Jade offers a drink over to Yuu. Yuu asks how much it costs and Jade insists it’s on the house. At that, Yuu pushes the drink away and Jade blinks at them curiously. “I know what game you’re playin’ at, Leech. You think you’re smart enough to put me on a leash?” An unearthly growl escapes Yuu and they flash their needle-sharp teeth at him. “News flash, eel, I’m not afraid to bite the hand that feeds.”
Now this was something new. Either people had the predictable reaction of falling easily into his charms or are put off by his eerie hospitality. But Yuu? Yuu challenged him, threatened him. He’s shocked and he loves it.
His pursuit would intensify, wanting to see more of this side of Yuu, and everytime he is not disappointed. His pushes would be met with equal force and there’s a spark of something more. A desire that flashes in both their eyes whenever they meet.
Their conversations are laced with such palpable tension, it’s enough for Azul to start flushing and demanding Jade to take this elsewhere and Floyd is gagging in disgust in the corner.
Tumblr media
Feral Yuu and Floyd was a combination that did not bode so well in the beginning. It all started with Floyd thinking it’d be a good idea to surprise his Shrimpy and give them a good ol’ squeeze. Nobody would think that anyone would have the guts to whirl around and chomp down on Floyd’s neck with the fury of a rabid animal.
It took the combined efforts of Azul, Jade, Ace, Deuce, Grim, and eventual staff to break the two apart as they both fought tooth and claw. It was a school fight that had the whole school talking. Floyd went into a rage and the Ramshackle Prefect that actually stood their ground, meeting Floyd’s brute strength with equal violence.
Everyone is on their guard whenever these two happen to be in the same vicinity. Yuu and Floyd would stare each other down like two predators trying to protect their turfs. It wasn’t a surprise that in due time, tensions would result in another clash.
This time however, Floyd was more prepared and he bit onto Yuu viciously, leaving a bite to match his own on his neck. Yuu braced themselves for Floyd to pummel them but were shocked when Floyd just smiled down at them widely. “My win~” And he’s happy as a clam.
Now that you both were even, Floyd is back to his usual behavior. Yet now whenever he meets Yuu, he calls them his “Mantis Shrimpy” and his greetings are much more rough. It riles Yuu up and they end up having play-fights/wrestles. Which Floyd has been counting on.
Yuu fascinates Floyd in how powerful they are and actually capable of keeping up with his energy. They don’t shy away from his scary demeanor and shifts in mood. He can unapologetically be himself and Yuu wouldn’t shame him for it. It just happens to be a bonus that Yuu acts like a beast when pushed too far and honestly… He’s way too into it.

not sure if you’re accepting requests bUT imagine y/n complaining to ran about how dense rindou is and rindou accidentally overhears their convo
u can jusy ignore this if you’re not accepting requests 🥺
dear you
pairings: rindou x gen!reader
a/n: still accepting requests! :>> this was pretty crappy but enjoy T^T
warnings: none (my little cousin's reading this so no cursing lol)
Tumblr media
a letter a month for the boy you like.
though something you noticed with the quiet man with a hardened look on his face, that he was one dense man.
he has been your crush ever since when you met the haitani brothers, meeting him when he handed you the garlic bread you wanted since you touched it first and it seemed unfair that he had it eventhough you pocketed it first.
sometimes you question why do you like somebody whose dense as a brick that any signs of affection are easily brushed off or any playful remarks are shot back with a slightly mean one or constant breakfasts prepared by yours truly are demanded?
you don't know, he doesn't have a reek or ounce of being a romantic or he has slight chances of being the most akward gentlemen but he just pulls you in, maybe having his older brother pull you in by your ankle and him atleast holding your head so you didn't hurt yourself.
that's when it got too much for you so you gave up your pride and decided to sit down to write a letter, with tea papers and pressed flowers you got to work. making it speacial so he can tell the difference between an average fan letter and a letter by somebody who wants to actually be a lot more closer to him, in a way to break friendship strings and to connect it with something more.
shaky hands you had when you slipped it into his locker, out in plain sight for him to see and you prayed that he didn't threw it away because conversations from his brother and him had you sweating for the people who had their letters thrown away.
when you walked past his locker, you nearly choked on the straw you were chewing when rindou placed it in his bag and went off with his brother and your friends wonder why you nearly stumbled on one of them.
you had your afternoon hangouts with them and you fear they're going to pull out your letter and questioned if it was from you or your friends because they knew how you liked picking flowers to press them and you gripped your sandwich in hand when rindou started rummaging through his bag to take out something, if it wasn't obvious you were draining the sauce out of the sandwich.
but he pulled out lollipops to give to you and your anxiety washes away because he had your favourite flavour, with a side of teasing from ran with how rin cares; you indulged in the afternoon with the two brothers with a few chats here and there but mostly peace and the wind that swept through all of you brought some tranquility.
months went by and you still held the same pen you always specifically wrote for him and you stopped and tossed it back to your pencil case, deep in thought now.
day after day, you expected a letter or an envelope to be in their trashcan when you lounge in their house but you didn't. not hearing any poking fun at the letters you give to rindou or a rip that stings you whenever they were both sick of them. the flowery letters you had for him were nowhere to be seen. you were bubbling with curiousity, very intense that you felt likke you should sneak into rindou's room.
but a certain braided dude stopped you, if he could he could carry you at the back of a collar like a cat to ask what you're doing.
"my brother doesn't like any snooping around his bedroom" a mean smile on his face when you groaned and sat on the floor and he hovers over you, like a parent waiting for their child to explain.
you groaned not wanting to explain to him about anything and you had to because you didn't want to deal with ran anymore because he caught you, burning with embarassment there was no choice.
"tell your dense blue highlights of a brother to know that i'm asking where are the brown letters-"
and if this wasn't the worst timing yet, you felt like digging the ground with your hands right now when you notice the stoic brother right behind ran and his expression broke.
comfusion with red tints on his face made you run away in panic, this wasn't expected not in a million of years and you got away while leaving the two brothers alone.
"man, you made them run~ what kind of gentleman are you?" it irritates rindou and he bumped into ran on the way to his drawer, he opened it pulling out the stacks of letters, the smell of tea calming down his red self that was inches away of recreating the spice that was put in last night's noodles. he knew it was you but spots of uncertainty in his head made his heart shift that if you were really getting close to him for him or his brother.
he always checked through, scared he didn't notice any "pass this to ran ♡" or "dear ran", this was probably the time to actually talk to you about this and glancing at his brother made the older urge him on with a tilt to the head.
ran watched from the window, your figure running and with his clumsy brother catching up and his lips stretched as he sipped on his tea.
to be honest, he wanted to barf because both of you fumble like you were in your own world with rindou and the hesistant touches made ran look away.
ah young love~ he likes romance but not when his brother is the one playing the romantic role.

acquitted love || sjn & reader
Tumblr media
title: acquitted love pairing: johnny suh x reader genre: fluff, angst, co-workers!au, lawyer!au, one-sided enemies to lovers word count: 8.7k warnings: some language/cursing, brief mentions of sex but there's no actual discussions or explicit conversations of the topic, but generally pg-13 prompt: you absolutely hate johnny suh. but when your boss pairs you two up together for one of the highest profile cases, you’re left working close with your enemy but he doesn’t seem to think that way of you. a/n: tada!! i wrote this for the @/ficscafe fic exchange event!! so @urlocalnctstan , hope you enjoy this !! i tried to write it according to what you put as your preferences, but honestly T_T it was so hard bc i was just not getting any ideas!! hopefully this is something you’d like :D enjoy !!
“God, isn’t he just… so attractive?”
Along with a click on your tongue, you feign a hit in Hyeri’s direction, whose reflexes have gotten so much faster in the past couple years of knowing you and it shows when she cowers underneath your arm. She gifts you that not-so-apologetic smile, full of mischievousness because she knows no matter how annoying she can be, you’ll still love her nonetheless.
“Why do you keep talking about Johnny? You know he’s banned as a topic of our conversations.”
Hyeri rolls her eyes, crossing her arms over her white frilled blouse. You know that she doesn’t actually inhabit any romantic feelings for Johnny, but she has a problem of thinking without the usage of her brain when she sees a hot guy.
Not that you think Johnny is hot.
No.
“Come on, you can’t tell me you don’t think he’s at least an ounce of smokin’ hot.” She’s unraveled her arms by now, poking your shoulder incessantly to grasp onto your attention as you're tapping on the buttons of the copier machine. “I bet if you asked him out, he’d say yes.”
You briefly glare at Hyeri. “You realize that he and I don’t get along, right? He keeps finding stupid loopholes in the system to win his cases. He thinks with his heart, not his head, and sometimes, with whatever that thing was in his pants.” And, not to mention that he walks out the court with that big grin stretched from cheek to cheek, giving the ‘good news’ to your well-respected boss (who you desperately seek the approval of but that’s a different story for another time). And every single time, she gives him that nod of appreciation, that ‘nod of approval’ if you will, when it should be given to you and not to some asshole who fucks his way to victory.
“But he’s so hot—”
You narrow your eyes at your friend, and with a stern voice, you call out, “Hyeri.”
She shrugs. “Honestly, though, he’s hella smart. He’s got a job here, and works under your boss. It’s Park, Kim & Associates—notice how Park is first, because she’s a fucking genius. She only picks the intelligent ones to work under her. Why do you think I’m still working for Mr. Kim?”
Park Seohyun and Kim Gonghyun—one of the biggest lawyers in the region, decided to join together to build their own law firm from the ground up. They were both highly respected in their field; Kim Gonghyun spent years of his life being mentored by one of the most famous judges, and as for Park Seohyun, she was, simply put, admirable because of the obstacles she has overcome to make her dreams of working in law to be real. Being a woman, young, and beautiful, she’s had her fair share of encounters with people who disregard her potential, that is until she met Gonghyun—who, admittingly is an old man who seems like he’d be traditional, sexist, even, but he proves to also make people realize how wrong they are with their impression of him.
But, as Mr. Kim is getting older, he’s gotten a bit… lazy.
In fact, he’s been slacking so much that he’s gotten a new rep in the office—if he was your direct supervisor, or your supervisor was under him, you were on the side of the office where all the easier, uncomplicated cases were assigned. Which meant that there was a slight possibility that your talents and skills weren’t as sharp and exceptional as you thought they were.
And well, Hyeri works directly underneath Mr. Kim.
Hyeri doesn’t want a heavy workload, despite the fact that there’s a plethora of files on her desk, stacked up one onto another as tall as her PC tower, and they were all open and closed cases—needless to say that she didn’t mind it.
“Okay, but you got offered a position under Seohyun. Do you really think you’re not wasting your potential?”
Hyeri scoffs. “Never. At least, not now. I’m still in my twenties, I’d like to enjoy my youth while I can, for your information.”
You quirk a brow. “And does any of that pertain fucking Johnny? The hot guy, so you claim?”
She immediately has her hand covering your mouth and you scowl. “Shhhhh, he works here!”
You bite the flesh of her hand and Hyeri instantly retracts. “You think I don’t know my archenemy works here? He sits directly across from my office—I get the best view of the guy and I’m not even one of his fangirls.”
“You’re not gonna be one of those girls who claim they’re different because they don’t like him but then end up falling for him anyway… are you?”
Your hand goes up and Hyeri crouches down.
“Stop it.”
“Seriously though! It’s the classic e2l love story,” she has her hands gesturing in front of her like she’s making an imaginary rainbow, “Two lawyers, constantly butting heads, accept each other’s differences and learn to love—“
“The fuck is an ‘e2l’?”
“Enemies to lovers.”
“Are you high? Stop spitting nonsense.” This time, you’re waving the stack of papers that finish printing in front of her face. “Meet me for lunch later. But if you keep talking about my archenemy and I falling in love, you can kiss a free meal goodbye.”
Hyeri gasps.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
Tumblr media
Maybe. Just maybe, Hyeri might be a tiny smidge right when she says Johnny is handsome. Just a bit though, because she can’t get credit for something like that.
He’s dyed his hair this shade of brunette that sort of reminds you of roasted chestnuts on a cold, winter day, sitting inside of a cooker outside of your childhood home, baking along with some sweet potatoes your mom had gotten from a farmer’s market nearby. Johnny has this focused gaze attached to the screen of his monitor; there’s a dip in the fronts of his brows, lips tightened into a straight line, and constant switching back and forth from the computer while taking notes down in a book that’s laid open in front of him.
You wonder what’s running through his mind, or well, you’re more interested in what files he has sprawled out on top of his desk.
Truthfully, if it hadn’t been obvious enough, you weren’t quite a fan of Johnny Suh and it’s mostly due to his work ethic. He’d been notorious for his reputation of sleeping around—especially with the opposing side—so it’s hard to convince yourself that he didn’t win the case because of his actual capabilities, but it’s because he pulled some strings.
And Johnny doesn’t put much effort into denying it either.
Albeit deep down, you were a teeny bit envious of his confidence. He struts around the courtroom with ease, and when he presents his position, there’s no staggering in his voice—it’s always crisp and clean, weighted with nothing but credence, and never straying from his initial perspective. It’s never a lack of poise, it’s consistently the look he goes for; from the hand gestures and the furrowed brows, to the rhetorical questions in the end of certain statements that has the speculators and jury sitting at the edge of their seat, Johnny had a talent for performing in the courtroom, but that doesn’t mean anything when the way he gets to the success isn’t ethical.
Just at that moment, his eyes lift from the screen and meet yours.
There isn’t any hesitation when you scramble to grab the remote controller, and the shades drop over the windows instantaneously.
“Fuck,” you mutter underneath your breath, tossing the remote onto your desk and shaking your hands after. What if he thought you were admiring him? Maybe he didn’t see. Yeah. It was for a brief second, and with how close your offices were to each other, it would be common to accidentally lock eyes… right?
Interrupting your thoughts, the office phone rings and it nearly startles the living soul out of you. But before you reach for it, your head tilts to the side curiously because the extension number is familiar—it’s Park Seohyun’s, your boss.
What could she be calling for?
You don’t remember fucking something up—but to be fair, half the times, you never really know if you’ve actually fucked up until someone with steaming ears and a crimson face comes storming in. So… did you do something good? Again, you don’t think that’s right either, because other people would’ve made comments about it.
Deciding to swallow your nerves, you pick up the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey!” Seohyun never fails to be bubbly, and you could never mimic her energy. You definitely had to be born with that kind of enthusiasm. “I have a favor. Hop into my office.”
Tumblr media
Leaned back in her leather swivel chair, she had her fingers laced with each other while resting over her stomach. Johnny stands beside you (and you do your best to not look directly at him, especially after that weird staring thing), and you both feel like kids being lectured by parents from how still you are. Her office is huge, probably the size of both yours and Johnny’s combined; with ceiling to floor windows, cases of books that line the perimeter, not to mention the humongous ass couch that practically covers the other half of the room, and her desk was so wide, you estimate about four monitors would fit on there with still additional space for work. That wasn’t even the best part—the view of the city looks almost like a generic lockscreen of a Windows computer, and you’re not even sure why she goes home at night when she basically has a penthouse here.
“As you know, I have a favor.”
“Right,” Johnny retorts, mostly as a filler in the awkward silence. “So… what’s the favor?”
She pulls a box from her purse; square, black and made from a leather material with a lock pad stitched into it, something you’ve never seen before, and she slides the passcode in, then it pops the lid open. A key (a… very small one) sits in the velvety cushion, with nothing else occupying the space with it, and it looks comical. She uses this to open the very top drawer of her desk, and as she pulls using the handle, there’s another box inside, but this time, metal instead of leather, but still black.
What the fuck?
It seems Johnny shares the same thoughts, because he sneaks a glance over at you.
“You see,” Seohyun begins, pressing on the digital keys of the box until there’s a beep at the end and the case hisses open. “There’s a lot of security for this. Which means you understand the importance of it.”
Then, she picks up four manila envelopes and lies on the surface of her wooden top desk. “I have a family emergency to attend to this upcoming week. I’m boarding a flight tonight. So I’m leaving the Hwang v. Yoon case to the two of you.”
“Fuck—”
“The what?”
You and Johnny are sputtering out of shock. The Hwang v. Yoon case is the biggest case that the firm is involved in currently, and the only people involved in it have been Seohyun and Gonghyun. It’s been on every social media platform you could think of; from Facebook to Twitter, TikTok to Instagram—there’s even this weird website for emo/grunge teens or strange kids that like writing fanfic called Tumblr, and whatever that is, it’s discussed on there too.
“What about Gonghyun?”
Seohyun scoffs, closing the drawer and dropping the key back into her special box. Where do you even get a box like that? “He can’t handle this alone. So I’m kicking him off until I come back. I thought about letting the two of you work with him, but his ego is so inflated, it’ll get in the way of our chances of winning. It’s easier if it was just me and him, but seeing that things at home aren’t well, I’m going to need you two to step up to the plate.”
The room goes quiet. The only sounds you hear are the muffled noises of a typical bustling office outside the thick walls of Seohyun’s office, and at first, excitement rushes through your blood because Seohyun thought of you taking over a special, high profile case.
Albeit, another realization gets soaked up, and it’s that Johnny also came to mind, and that because it’s such an important case, the two of you would be… working… many… hours… together.
Maybe you should back out of it—but then again, this is such a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Imagine winning this— it wouldn’t be good for just the law firm, it’d be good for you too. Your name, in articles on these big fancy news websites, perhaps even on new channels, talking about how you, this amazing lawyer, won the Hwang v. Yoon case.
But then you’re snapped back into reality when Johnny leans over to take the envelopes from Seohyun.
If your name is on those platforms, so is Johnny’s.
God, this guy just ruins everything, doesn’t he?
“We’ll take care of it, Seohyun. You can trust us,” he says assuringly, a smile tugging on each corner of his lips with that dazzling gaze. “We’ll be at our best.”
Kiss ass.
Tumblr media
If you had the option, you wouldn’t be spending your Saturday night here at work, in one of those conference rooms with a long table in the middle, a big projector that displays on the wall, and a random black leather loveseat couch that lines the one corner in case there’s too many occupants.
Especially since the person who’s accompanying you is Johnny Suh.
There’s probably a lot of people who would kill to be in your position (Hyeri being one of them), but you dread it. Not to be that person, but what’s so special about him anyway? What? He’s tall, has some muscles, long luscious hair that he can slick back with that sultry stare—wait, what?
“Alright, moving on…” From what? You guys just started? It’d been clear with Seohyun that the mornings would be dedicated to other cases, but nights would be considered overtime and where you’d zoom in your focus on Ms. Hwang’s justice. “Let’s take a look at the facts here.”
Johnny slips off his blazer, hanging it on the back of one of the chairs as you’re seated in another, leaning back comfortably with an arm resting on the table. He loosens the first few buttons of his dress shirt before folding up the sleeves, and that’s when you notice a little thing in the inner crook of his elbow—is that a fucking sunflower? Is that what he uses to reel girls in? That he’s soft enough to have a pretty little flower etched onto his gentle, silky and supple—
“Okay,” he says, interjecting into your thoughts with a laser pointer in his hand. He taps on the space bar of his laptop that mirrors what’s on his screen, but then, that’s when you realize what’s on the slides.
There’s a collage of pictures, mostly street, casually walking themed ones, but the common factor was that they were of Yoon Changmin, the man you guys were up against. They were all paparazzi-like photos, which begs the question, how did he get pics like this, and why did he get them?
“What’s the point of this?” you ask, voice laced with nothing but suspicion.
“We gotta get into the mind of the enemy.” You wanna get into the mind of your enemy, too.
You gesture to the one image of Changmin with an arm around his girlfriend and a finger up his nose. “Seems like he’s trying to reach inside of his head instead of us. These are just everyday pictures, Johnny. What’s that going to do for us?”
“Well,” he begins, turning to look at the wall of ‘evidence’. “You see—wait, holy shit.”
Freezing in the midst of reaching for your coffee, your head jolts in the direction of your partner. “What? What is it?”
“Holy shit,” he exclaims, “Hoooooooooly shit. Why didn’t I see this before? This changes everything.”
Furrowing your brows, you’ve given up getting your drink and dropped your hands onto the table. “Tell me, what is it?”
“This is a game changer.”
“Johnny,” you call out sternly, and his eyes link with yours before he instantly points to a particular picture with his red laser pointer.
“Look at that.” There’s pride saturated in his words, but when you look at what he’s indicating, your body slouches in disappointment.
Why the hell was he directing your attention onto Changmin’s thighs? Surely, there’s no denying that they were attractive—you recall that his alibi was at the gym that very night of the crime.
“What? He’s guilty for showing off his toothpick legs?” They were lean, you never said they were muscular.
“No,” he retorts, slightly irritated by your response as he rolls his eyes. “Look at his pants.”
“Okay…”
“They’re jean shorts.”
There’s a pregnant pause, but the expression on your face is so loud it can’t be hidden.
Johnny continues, “That’s a fashion crime.” He says it as if it’s an obvious fact known by many. “Not to mention that it’s fucking raw hem. He should be arrested.”
Suddenly, your opinion of him thinking too much with his heart dissipates because it seems like he’s thinking out of his ass instead. Did he win those cases out of pity? How did this guy even pass the bar? How about law school? How the hell did he even get into law school?
“I don’t think—”
“Listen, alright, just hear me out,” he’s got the palms of his hands resting flat on the surface of the table, doing his best to gain your full undivided attention. “Only assholes wear jean shorts. They flaunt that shit around like they own the place, but they’re horrendous pieces of clothing that should not be on a male’s body. I don’t care what you say, what your opinion is, because that is a fact.”
Puffing your cheeks, you feel at a loss. If Johnny is who you had to get this done, it feels like you’re not going to be finding much evidence any time soon.
“Okay, if… if that’s how you want to play it, then show me the evidence—other than those 2012 cut off denim shorts.”
He reaches over to hit his space bar again, then with a wink and a slide change, he leans closer to you and says with that deep, honeyed voice, “Gladly.”
Tumblr media
You hate admitting when you’re wrong.
Ironically, you concede and will confess when you actually are, but it doesn’t mean that you enjoy it. For example, when Hyeri claims that the intern Mark had a crush on you, you quickly waved her off, stating something along the lines of, “I’m too intimidating; there’s better chances of him being scared of me than ever finding me attractive.” And then a week later, you owed Hyeri free lunch at that hip ramen place downtown because Mark had approached your desk that very morning with a bouquet of red roses flowers for you, a cheeky grin glued to his face with pools of hearts in his eyes, and ready to ask you on a date because it was the day after his internship had ended. Naturally, it wasn’t fun rejecting that poor college boy.
But, you won’t say you find Johnny interesting or handsome. Or that there’s potential when it came to possibly (just barely the slightest smidge) that you’d ever consider asking Johnny out. He’s your enemy here, you’ve mentioned that a multitude of times, and you stand firm on that very declaration, despite the fact that sometimes when he gets too close, your breath gets caught in your throat and you feel like you can’t get whatever’s lodged in out.
Albeit it’s not the whole “you guys are gonna end up together” comment that Hyeri makes and resulting in you denying it afterwards, it’s that Johnny might… be a decent lawyer.
He’s not the best one you’ve seen; the stupid revelation he had on the first day working on the case about the jean shorts is evidence for it, but it’s the days following that were slowly changing your perspective on him.
When you said, “He thinks too much with his heart more than with his head,” it was 100% correct.
When meeting with potential witnesses, you recognized that Johnny empathizes with people often; when they cry and start panicking from being overwhelmed, he's quick on his feet to put an arm around them, share reassuring words, and have them back to normal in record’s time.
And, well… you? You’re the one making them cry in the first place.
You don’t want to fully take the blame for being the cause of their tears, but people need to hear what’s happening, and the very detail that they can’t even handle this information probably means they’re not worthwhile as a key witness.
Johnny, of course, thinks otherwise.
He believes that these people should have a voice (although you’ve alluded that they might be more useless than helpful), and putting them on the stand with Yoon Changmin there would change the view of the jury to supporting Hwang Naeri.
“Listen, if we get these people to sign the form, we’d get witnesses and it’ll help Naeri,” Johnny claims, frantically moving his arms annoyingly as he talks, trying his best to express the gravity of the situation, “and maybe, maybe, money wouldn’t be how Changmin wins, but how he loses. We can’t have another person with jean shorts walking on the streets of our city like this—they deserve to go to prison.”
You scrunch up your nose. “Why does this always revert back to the jean shorts?”
“It always has to do with jean shorts,” he snaps back matter-of-factly. “Any straight guy wearing jean shorts with that much goddamn confidence has done some wrong in their lives.”
“Right, but I’m pretty sure that the crimes he did are mainly the reason why he’s being prosecuted against.”
“Jean shorts are the windows to the soul.”
“I’m almost 100% sure that eyes are the windows to the soul, but whatever. If you genuinely believe that the women we met today would benefit our case, then… okay. Let’s bring them to the stand.”
On the contrary to you, Johnny doesn’t have a hard time convincing witnesses to testify. You see the way that he works; those kind eyes directed at the participants, the pools of chocolate were sweet, saturated in nothing but tenderness and warmth, then he does that weird thing where he reaches for their hands and cups them before the words that escapes from his lips are enough to swoon them to stand in front of a courtroom.
Maybe, just maybe, there’s a method to his so-called madness.
Aggression and bluntness don’t work, it seems, because when you’re the one attempting to convince these people to go against the man that had done them wrong, they’re less willing to do it. Something about ‘moving on,’ and ‘not wanting to relive those memories again,’ but if it was you, you’d want justice. Then again, not everyone is like you, and not everyone thinks like you, and spending this abundance of time with Johnny is slowly getting you to ease into that perspective.
So… the initial impression you had of him may have been wrong.
And maybe, just maybe, you’re developing some feelings for him, just as Hyeri predicted.
Tumblr media
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
His abrupt personal question is enough to have the coffee spill into your mouth to slide down the ‘wrong throat’ because you’re choking, hand on your chest as you’re tackling to regain your breath again and Johnny only stares in disbelief, blinking blankly. “Are… are you okay?”
You glare at him through a hooded gaze. “Well,” you clear your throat once more. “Now, I am.”
“Cool.” He nods, retracting his hand so he could rub your back soothingly, deciding it’s best to stay away. “Are you going to answer my question?”
Quirking a brow, your head tilts slightly in puzzlement. “Why are you asking this?”
Johnny shrugs. “Isn’t it weird that we’ve hung out with each other for a whole week—stayed here for nights and we both don’t know anything about each other?”
Tapping your fingers against the wooden top table, you sigh. Maybe he’s got a point; after all, “Keep your friends close; keep your enemies closer,” right?
“No, I’m single.”
Johnny’s face suddenly brightens, ears perked, and his body straightens its posture in his seat at this revelation. “Oh, uh, I didn’t know that. You seemed busy in your personal life, so I, uh… was just wondering.” He looked anxious, but you couldn’t pinpoint why. “I, um, I’m single too, by the way, in case you’re wondering.” You weren’t.
The plethora of cardboard and plastic boxes scattered across the table was a representation of the night. It’s been long, exhausting, and messy, mostly because it’s a Friday night, the hearing was on Monday, and the two of you were nowhere near close to having enough to present to the court. In fear of disappointing Seohyun, the two of you agreed to stay over the office for the weekend to cram work for the case. There’s no denying that the atmosphere is weirder on the weekends, especially since, well, no one really comes here on the weekends. Johnny had to use the bathroom earlier and ran into the cleaning lady and she nearly shit her pants because she didn’t think anyone was here, so she had music blasting in her headphones.
Johnny is… interesting. He makes you laugh—or well, want to laugh, but you don’t give him that sense of satisfaction—and he’s smart but in his own weird way. He’s not like the other lawyers you’ve met, or any of the law students you attended University with because he’s more lighthearted and free-spirited than the rest, taking life in strides instead of just overwhelming himself in the abundance of stress that work brings.
He’s entirely the opposite of you.
And maybe you could learn something from the guy, but there’s something in you that brews hatred toward him. Possibility that you resent how easy he makes being a lawyer seem when you’re struggling in your day-to-day life to make things work.
But it’s way too fucking hard when he’s just… like that.
Despite all of that, he’s very generous and kind toward you. On rough days, he delivers your coffee order, the one you always get because he remembers what you asked the intern to get for you the last time, and he’s good at identifying when you’re just having that kind of day. You eventually learn he has a photographic memory (fucking show off), so when he saw that crumpled napkin with scribbles of what you want in that dumb intern’s hand, it wasn’t hard to remember. Which, by the way, is how he’s able to get into the most prestigious school for undergrad, manage to pass the bar so easily, and get into law school effortlessly.
And knowing this information sort of angers you more.
You know this isn’t his fault—he’s been blessed with a trait that people desire, one that you also yearn for, but the lucky ones get handed a lot of things in life. You wonder if he’s the type of guy who wins girls easily after matching with them on dating sites because of this stupid ass ‘photographic memory.’ Does he sleep with them right after? Does it ever get serious?
You shrug your shoulders and shake your head. You shouldn’t even let these strange thoughts haunt you, especially when you don’t even like him.
He’s a spoiled brat who gets everything handed to him on a silver platter.
So you’re left counting the remaining days until the trial so you don’t ever have to work with Johnny Suh this closely again.
Tumblr media
Okay, well, it’s evident that bad luck is glued to your side because after you win the Hwang v. Yoon case for your law firm with that asshole, Seohyun is so impressed. So goddamn impressed that she insists that all the high profile cases are to be given to both you and Johnny.
To work as a team.
Together.
Jesus, this is Hell for you.
Surely, the promotion and raise that came along with it was definitely a plus, but it has you wondering if it’s even worth it. He’s been your unspoken enemy since the first day, and although you think you’re pretty forthright about your hatred for this guy, he can’t seem to read social cues.
When you’re pushing the double doors into the conference room the two of you often spend working on cases in, you expect Johnny to be ready for another day. But strangely enough, Johnny doesn’t have his laptop out or any of the notebooks sprawled across the table.
“Um,” you slide the strap of your bag off your shoulder and onto the spare chair. “Did you come late or something?”
He takes in a deep breath like he’s been holding back something. “We need to talk.”
There’s worry inscribed into his features; from the crease in between his brows, to his pursed lips, and eyes soaked in concern, almost like he’s got bad news to share and it has your stomach in knots. Was it that the case was thrown out? It couldn’t be, right? You both worked hard, presented your stance to the point that the jury and the judge were in awe with your findings. Sure, you had to cover Johnny’s mouth right before he was about to go off in a tangent about jean shorts, but overall, it was a good win, a hard one to go back on and pull out the wrongs of it. So what was it?
“I’m quitting our partnership.”
You blink. “What?”
He gestures to the room with his hands as if there’s anything out to reference. “This thing. Our work. The big profile cases. The famous stuff. I told Seohyun that I won’t be doing it anymore and she can revoke the promotion and the raise.”
You’re still not catching on. “… Why?” Was it something you did? Yeah, you weren’t a big fan of Johnny either, but were you so bad that he decided to not go through with the raise because of you?
“Because,” he pushes his blazer back, hands sliding into the front pockets of his navy blue trousers. “There’s a policy put into place. Those who are on the same cases cannot have any personal relations with each other that extend past friendships.”
“We’re not even friends?” With confusion written across your face, your head tilts to the side. “I’m not… I’m not catching on here.”
“I like you.”
Startled, the words you want to say are stolen out of your mouth. You’re left with a mixture of perturbation and bewilderment, uncertain where to go from there because Johnny asked for the removal of both a promotion and additional money that could be so good for his career… and it’s all because he has a crush on you?
“You quit the best thing that could’ve happened to you because you like me?”
“Yeah,” Johnny states calmly, sucking in his cheeks for a brief moment. “Ain’t that romantic?”
You scoff. “No. Absolutely not. You’re insane! Why would you do yourself dirty like that? Use your head, Johnny, you’re constantly thinking with that stupid heart of yours, and hate to break it to you, but it won’t get you anywhere.” Combing your hair with your fingers, you let out a sigh. “Go ask Seohyun for the position back. Say you made a mistake and—”
“I’m not asking her for the position back.”
Johnny doesn’t make any sense to you. “What? Why wouldn’t you do that?
“Because,” he laughs in disbelief, not because he thinks you’re funny. “I’m not going to force myself to work with a girl that I keep falling for. That’s self-inflicting, you realize that, right? You’re amazing, but you can seriously be so dense sometimes.”
“I’m dense? You just told one of the best law firms in the city that you don’t want to work on the important cases anymore because you have a stupid crush on your partner!”
“If we were on a team with more people, maybe it’d be different. But it’s just us two. You think I won’t fall any harder? That’s not easy. Every time I see you working, I swear I could be hopelessly in love with you one day.”
Your heart stops for a second.
This is Johnny Suh you were talking about here. One of the claimed best lawyers in your office, one of the most intelligent people that Hyeri has ever met, and Seohyun evidently backs this up because she’s given him so much recognition for his work. He’s the guy who worked with you to win the Hwang v. Yoon case, he’s the one who brought up the stupid jean shorts that seemed so far-fetched at the time, but they were a crucial detail everyone missed—it so happened that when Changmin bought those dumb shorts, there was evidence of at least one of his crimes in that store from the security cameras.
Any cis-gendered male who wears jean shorts can’t be trusted, according to Johnny.
And candidly speaking? You couldn’t even deny that. Your past two ex-boyfriends both wore jean shorts and the one cheated on you and the other one was caught money laundering.
“Listen,” he begins, interrupting your foggy thoughts. “I’m not asking you to tell me you like me back. I’m telling you because you should know, and that I can’t go on any further without letting you know. I’ll, uh, be in my office. Seohyun said she’d find a replacement for me.”
Tumblr media
Hyeri is his replacement.
She’s great company and does a good job of helping you with whatever you need, but that was just it. Hyeri followed you, she never led with you, just as Johnny does. Agreeing with everything you say, mindlessly trailing behind everything you do—Hyeri was smart, but she couldn’t figure out how to think for herself when it came to these bigger cases because she’s never been given such a responsibility. But you couldn’t even blame her because it’s what she was told to do under Gonghyun.
“You said that you think Maeri snatched the bracelet?”
“No, I said if you watched the security video that the jewelry store submitted, it clearly shows that Maeri snatched the bracelet. Not that I ‘think.’ The proof is right there, Hyeri.”
She nods, resuming back to her work on the computer. Truthfully, Hyeri felt more like an assistant than a co-worker, someone to bounce ideas off of and to see from a different perspective. And as much as you hated Johnny, he had decent points. He had ways of making you put yourself into the shoes of people you never thought you were; although the guy was obnoxious, at least he actually was… good at his job.
Deciding you can’t take it anymore when Hyeri asks for the tenth time that hour about your beliefs rather than her own, you abruptly stand from your seat.
“Where are you going?”
“Out,” you reply shortly. “I’ll be back.”
It was just a spontaneous thought. It’s after hours, and although there are some people who stay behind to get some work done, you had your doubts that Johnny would still be here. He seems to have a better grip on that work/life balance thing people talked about (unlike yourself), but it didn’t hurt to check his office, right?
It’s a good thing you went with it. Because right across from yours, there’s Johnny.
There’s one single lamp that shines over the tabletop of his desk, and the other sources of light in his office are from his computer screen and the ones from the city skyline from behind him. It has him seemingly angelic like this, so serene, calm, and collected, only focused on what’s laid out in front of him. The sun has gone down, people have gone home, but Johnny remains, hardworking as always, despite your previous observations that he’s a lazy, unprofessional guy who gets everything handed down to him.
With a knock on his glass door, he flinches, head raising up and eyes meeting yours.
Were his eyes always this sparkly?
Opening the door, Johnny drops the pen in his hand and crosses his arms before leaning back in his seat. “What’s up?”
“You’re here late,” you state the obvious, and Johnny only nods in return, without a rebuttal in sight. “You aren’t normally here late. At least, before the Hwang v. Yoon case.”
“Yeah, you’re right. But Seohyun dropped something on my desk this morning. Wanted to work on it. What brings you here?”
Inhaling in a deep breath of courage, your hands bundle up into a fist by your side. “Please come back.”
Johnny raises a brow. “What?”
“Come back,” you reiterate, this time, it’s less tense and releases with ease. Caving in isn’t usually this effortless to you, but something about Johnny makes you feel… comfortable enough.“Come back and work with me again. Yes, I’m not supportive of how you do things—”
“Then let’s go out on a date.”
You freeze. Legs rooted into the floors of Johnny’s office, you’re left immobile and diffident on how to react next. It wasn’t what you were expecting, although you weren’t quite sure what you were hoping to anticipate, but it most definitely was not this.
“I—”
“I said my terms,” he retorts, shutting the book in front of him before shuffling up from his seat. He’s leaving, you realize, and Johnny’s ready to head home for the night and you’re not sure if you could handle an entire weekend with Hyeri here. “And, I meant what I said. One date, and if it really doesn’t work out, I’ll stay on the case.”
Chewing on your bottom lip anxiously, the next words that come out are out of character for you. “And… what if it does?”
A soft smile tugs from each corner of his mouth. “Then we’ll figure it out from there. Promise.”
Tumblr media
This is… awkward. It shouldn’t be, but yet somehow, it remains awkward.
You’ve spent weeks with Johnny before, and those moments were in a room, in the middle of the night, and alone. Hours and hours were dedicated to work, yes, but it was just the two of you and nobody else.
So why is it so weird being in a five Michelin star restaurant with him?
Maybe it’s the atmosphere. The dim lights, the white clothed tables in lieu of the scratched up wooden one back at the law firm, and instead of leather seats, there’s a neutral beige chaise cushion for the dining chair, slightly less comfortable because it doesn’t recline like the one in your office. Instead of an array of photos and evidence disseminated in front of you, there’s a laminated menu with a multitude of options of what to have for dinner.
Johnny gets the steak with mashed potatoes and string beans, and you order something similar but seared salmon for the main protein. The waitress offers wine, babbling on about the age of the red, where the vineyard is located, and the dryness to sweetness—to be honest, you could care less; you’d rather have gin and sprite with a squirt of lime. A couple glasses of that and you can almost guarantee that the night would end with a deep slumber.
Oddly enough, Johnny seems nervous. Ever since he pulled up in his midnight black Audi in front of your apartment complex, he’s been acting strange. He keeps wiping his sweaty palms off the material of his trousers, occasionally swiping off the droplets that fall on the side of his face.
“Are you… okay?” you suddenly ask, adjusting your dress in your seat. Deciding to go with a black silk dress with a slit up the leg and your hair let down, it’s not a look you often sport but since you’re going on a date (one you haven’t been on in quite some time), you figured it would be nice to at least play the part.
“I’m, uh, honestly, I’ve never really asked a girl out before.”
You quirk a brow curiously. “What? You’re telling me you never asked a girl out before?”
He lets out a bashful laugh with a faint nod, making an attempt to swallow his nerves after. “Honestly, I’ve always been asked out and not the other way around. Not to sound like that guy, but I never really had to put effort into trying for girls. They kind of just…”
“—Throw themselves at you?”
He beams. “Yeah! Like that. I don’t really know how to react half the time, but it makes the whole dating scene a little bit easier.” Geez, he called you dense, but he’s over here acting clueless.
Either way, it feels like whatever opinion you had about Johnny remained true. He never had to try when it came to the dating scene, and you could only imagine what that means for work and the relationships he has with the women in your career field.
“Mm, does that usually happen with work too?”
Befuddled, Johnny leans back in his chair. “What do you mean by that?”
With a shrug of your shoulders, you’re poking the meat of your salmon that falls off easily. After the first initial bite, the fish practically melts on impact when it touches the tip of your tongue, smooth like butter and bursting with flavor that couldn’t be described by any common person because it wouldn’t do the salmon justice. Johnny seemed to put a lot into this date, and you’re left pondering what the point of this was. Did he actually like you, or was he trying to get into your head? “Just seems like you get a lot of special treatment.”
“Are you jealous?”
“In what way?” you snap back.
“Are you jealous of me because I’m getting this so-called special treatment that you think I’ve always had, or were you jealous of the girls that seemingly got my attention?”
You’re left without anything to say.
It was a good observation he made because truthfully, you never saw it like that.
In actuality, you often saw Johnny as your rival. He climbed the ladder in the field with ease, and it wasn’t hard to quickly blame his success on the fact that he was a guy in a male dominated industry, but the fact that there’s a possible interpretation for your hatred may be from these feelings you might’ve been harboring for him this entire time… that can’t be it… right?
“I mean, look at where you are now,” you begin, trying to defend yourself. It can’t be true that the reason you’ve been bitter about Johnny was because of the girls that got his attention, and one of them not being you. “You got a high position from—”
“—From hard work,” Johnny interjects with his brows furrowed. “I didn’t get to where I was because I slept around, if that’s what you’re insinuating. I knew you sort of always hated me, but I’ve always admired you. I like your work ethic, I like your style, even though we’re both on opposite spectrums, I like the way you think and I wanted to know what it was like being partners with you. Getting to be on that case with you showed me more than just who you were as a lawyer, but who you were as a person. I like you, but I’m trying to put my finger on why you hate me so much.”
“So you noticed.” Sucking in your cheeks, your eyes trail elsewhere—from the fork that lays beside your plate, to the glass filled halfway with wine, to the little candle that sits in between the two of you that flickers the way he has your heart when he expresses once more how he feels about you.
“Yeah, of course I noticed. If you like someone, it’s kind to miss details like that about them. So… you really hated me because you thought I slept my way to the top, huh?”
“I mean…” shoulders dropping in exasperation, you run your fingers through your disheveled hair. “All those rumors—”
“Again, they’re just rumors. I worked hard to get here, you know. And I’m kind of offended that you thought of me that way.”
You scoff. “They’re rumors, Johnny, it’s kind of hard to ignore all the office gossip when that’s all you hear. Plus, it wasn’t hard to believe either, with the whole flirtatious act whenever you encounter anyone who’s breathing and has a vagina.”
“I wasn’t flirting.”
“You need a book for dummies that elaborates on what’s flirting or not, because Johnny Suh, whatever it is you do with your body language in front of that chick who sits by the front door.”
“You mean Siwoo? The pregnant one who’s married to her highschool sweetheart? Also, how do you not know our receptionist’s name?”
You throw your arms into the air. “How am I supposed to know her name?”
He tilts his head to the side, genuinely baffled. “Do you… not talk to anyone outside of Hyeri?”
Your silence answers his question.
“I… honestly, I don’t know if I should be offended or if I should be honored. You think I didn’t earn anything that I have now, you think that everything I have was handed to me. On one hand, it’s flattering that you think my looks and my bedroom skills could do that but at the same time… I’m offended because you think I’m incapable.”
“I never said you were incapable—”
“But you implied it.”
Hands falling onto your lap, it’s your turn to gulp. His words come shooting at you, but you’re without a shield to protect yourself, and with the new experience of working with Johnny, there comes the realization at times that Johnny is a hard worker. There are some things that he says and does that aren’t like the people you’ve encountered, and being put on new cases with Hyeri only proved it. He’s thoughtful in the sense that whenever you’d bring up your stance on something, he challenges you with what the defense might counter.
Johnny makes you want to be better. Not just against him, but to brush off the dust on your skills and enter into the battlefield of a courtroom to showcase them.
“Well, if you’re staying silent, I just want to say that I tried,” the crinkle in between your brows makes another appearance because Johnny is great at leaving you stunned and confused. “I really like you. I love how your head works, and I wanna be with someone like that but I also can’t be with someone who doesn’t respect me.”
Why is it that when you’re in that conference room with him, you’re not afraid and never running out of things to say, but now you’re empty handed?
“I’ll pay for dinner. Grab you an Uber. I honestly thought I could overlook those things, and maybe your perspective for me has changed, but I could see it on your face. It’s the same.”
Tumblr media
After that date with Johnny, his life turns back to normal.
Yours? Not so much.
Candidly speaking, part of you missed working with Johnny. You were wrong about him, so wrong, and even when you wanted to apologize at the dinner for what you thought of him, the pride in you was like a vicious plague that blackened your insides, preventing you from ever saying those words.
Oftentimes, you’d still be able to sneak a glimpse of him in his office with that same look on his face—full of concentration and nothing else in his mind other than the task at hand.
The cases you have with Hyeri entail a head like Johnny’s. Someone who could question you, to protest against your stance when there could be flaws in it. It feels like deja vu each time you think about it, each time you open a new case file and Hyeri sits there, perched in that seat beside yours, eyes sparkling with what you have in mind next, instead of what she has going on in hers.
Although you’ve tried convincing yourself that maybe, just maybe, what you feel for Johnny is purely professional but when you see him standing by the water cooler with a couple of your coworkers, eyes mimicking the moon crescents in the skies, replicating the ways his lips curl in elation—it was beginning hard to believe that it was all platonic feelings.
So maybe you should be bold for once. Pull off that exterior that displays you as someone who isn’t just independent and assiduous, but someone who’s stubborn and aggressive in getting what they want—and not in a good way.
This time, you’ll show it in a good way.
Or at least, you’ll try.
Johnny is a routine kind-of-guy—he grabs an iced americano every morning at the coffee shop downstairs at the edge of the street, he does his daily 11:00AM drop-by at the water cooler to refill his Hydroflask (which was his prized possession, by the way), and parked in the same exact spot in the parking garage of your building, despite there being an abundance of places he could choose.
That’s why you decide to stand by his car after work that day. Bouncing on the balls of your feet, hands shaking because it’s your turn to feel anxious. That blazer that once fit so comfortably in the morning suddenly feels tight and hot in the afternoon, and the weather hasn’t even changed. Your bag slung over your shoulder weighs ten times heavier than an hour ago, and you can’t stop your jaw from tightening.
Before your thoughts could spiral off all the possibilities of what the outcome may be when you tell Johnny how you feel, he’s already standing there, feet away from you with that dip in the fronts of his brows that you want to smoothen out the crinkles of with the pad of your thumb.
“Hi,” you greet, faint and peculiarly different from your other approaches. “Um, I just… was waiting for you.”
“Hey,” Johnny says back, the first few buttons of his shirt already unraveled, his blazer hung over his forearm and the sleeves are rolled up. “I see that. What’s up with you?”
“Um,” your leg was jittery, hard to control so you spat everything you had to say out as fast as you could before he could see right through you. “I just wanted to apologize. For everything. You’re admirable, kind, and I wish I inhabited those same characteristics you have. I think professionally, you’ve got great ideas, one that could be implemented into mine and what we did together for that case was just… yeah. We could do something big if we put our heads together.”
Johnny nods in agreement. The relationship between you two work-wise was obvious, he knew that much. “And what about… outside of that?”
“I like you,” you choked, barely getting the words out. “More than just coworkers, um, I guess, more than friends but I’m not really sure since you walked out on our first date,” inhaling in a deep breath of courage, you continue on, “and I don’t know how you feel now after I’m standing before you like this, asking for another chance and that I’m sorry.”
He stares at you blankly, and it leaves you unsure whether or not he accepts your apology. “You know why we ended that date early.”
“Well,” you start again, “can we… start over and try again? I promise I won’t tempt you to end the date early this time.”
And with that, there’s the signature smile that Johnny sports that swoons girls, makes their knees weak, and heart clench but this time… it’s just for you.
“I’d really like that.”

“Who’s that?” Y/N asked Sam with a smile, nodding over towards the man sitting on the patio with a beer bottle in his hand, staring off into the distance with a grim look on his features. He wore a black leather jacket that was zipped up to the collar, dark pants, boots tied perfectly, and black gloves on his hands.
“Ah that’s James. His friends get to call him Bucky.” Sam told her, tucking his hands in his pocket, “It’s a very exclusive group though. Consists of just Steve.”
Y/N looked up at Sam, raising an eyebrow, “Is that a bit of… can I call it annoyed jealousy?” She asks with a teasing smile, nudging him with her shoulder slightly, “What, you jealous you’re not Cap’s bestie or annoyed that James won’t let you be his?”
Sam looked down at her shaking his head, “Can you not do the whole reading thing right now?” He asked with a small chuckle escaping his lips.
“Sorry, it’s just radiating off of you.” Y/N said with a small laugh before looking back out the glass door to the man referred to as James sat alone, “I’m going to go talk to him.”
Sam raised his eyebrows at her, “Good luck with that, Y/N. He’s a man of little to no words. Or emotions. He also doesn’t blink very much.”
Y/N was already headed towards the door with a small smile on her lips, turning her head over her shoulder to look at Sam, “That’s alright. I love staring contests.” She told him before walking out the glass door, shutting it behind her. Y/N walked over to the small metal table Bucky was sitting at, plopping herself on the chair across from him silently. She allowed her eyes to study him. He had longer hair, almost brushing his shoulders. There was stubble covering his cheeks and chin and he constantly looked like he was deep in thought, so much so in fact that little crease between his furrowed eyebrows could be permanent. She didn’t say anything, just sat silently in the chair as she stared into his eyes.
Bucky watched the woman. He had heard they were getting a new team member but didn’t bother to get to know much about her. It was somebody Steve had found and thought could be useful to the team but he didn’t know much more than that. He looked her over as she sat, she was wearing a long sleeved black shirt with blue jeans and combat boots. He was curious about the red leather gloves she wore though, he’d never really seen anybody else besides him wearing gloves constantly. He stared into her eyes, watching her closely. What was she doing? Why did she come to sit by him when there were so many other places to be? Bucky had came out here to be alone as he always did. He liked to be alone, in his own personal bubble lost in his thoughts. There was something about sitting outside alone and night where he felt peace. Maybe being under the stairs with the breeze on his face reminded him of his time in Wakanda, he didn’t know what it was but it was his favorite moment of the day. And now there was this new team member just staring at him. When her eyebrow twitched upwards slightly as if to challenge him, he narrowed his blue eyes at her and placed the beer bottle on the table never breaking eye contact. Bucky places his gloved hands on the table intertwined and leans slightly forward, staring, almost glaring, into her eyes. But the more he just stared the more he felt… what was that? Comfort? His irritation was fading away as he stared into those eyes, almost feeling lost and mesmerized in them at this point. Once he couldn’t take the staring anymore he sighs and leans back in his chair, looking away from her and out into the distance again, “What are you doing?”
Steve had found Y/N after she accidentally helped on a mission. She had a special ability that he thought could be very useful not only on missions but just in general so he asked her to join the team or at least give it a try. Y/N had agreed and now here she was, across from the dark haired, constantly in pain looking man having a staring contest. She knew exactly what she was doing. Her ability consisted of being able to read emotions and feelings of those around her and also manipulate them if she touched them, hence why she wore the gloves. She never wanted to touch someone and manipulate their feelings without their consent because she believed everybody was entitled to how they feel and there were reasons people felt the way they do. But that all broke off when Steve offered her the job. She would be helpful on missions, being able to get enemies to cooperate with the good guys instead of being all nasty and evil. Y/N could feel the pain, the anger, the lostness but she could see that plain as day in his eyes. When he broke the staring off and asked the question, she leaned back in the chair, “Did you know there’s multiple studies that show that staring into someone’s eyes can show their true intentions to you and show if you can trust them? They also say eyes are the window to the soul, able to process other’s emotions and what they’re feeling deep inside.”
Bucky’s lips curved slightly downwards at her words. She had stared at him to get information about him, was that it? He took a sip of his beer and looked back over to her, “You could’ve just asked instead of treating me like a study. I’ve had enough of that for one lifetime.” He spat out at her but almost immediately felt bad. She wasn’t wrong, he stared into her eyes and saw nothing but openness. Even now she was being open with him, truthful. God dammit, all it took was a damn staring contest for him to have a spark of trust for her, “Who are you anyway?”
“I’m Y/N.” She told him, a small smile curving to her lips, “I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.” She said as she stared into his eyes, letting him know she was truly sorry if she offended him, “Sam said you like to stare and I’m pretty kick-ass at staring contests. Couldn’t help myself.”
Bucky narrowed his eyes slightly again at her as she apologized to him, then looks away again as he took another sip of his beer, letting out a slight sigh, “So you’re the one Steve brought back. Why would he do that?” He said almost coldly thought he didn’t mean for it to come across that way.
Y/N shrugs, “He thought I could be helpful here and on certain missions given my abilities.” She told him, watching him even though he wasn’t looking at her.
“And what are your abilities?” Bucky asked, looking over towards her curiously before looking down to her gloved hands, “Are you missing an arm too? Did he think we could bond about it?”
Y/N almost chuckled at his words then shook her head at him with a small smile, “No, I have both arms in tact. Which now would be a good time to tell you I’m sorry about yours, must’ve been a big loss that I’m sure you’re still dealing with everyday.” She watched as Bucky looked at her almost shocked for a slight second at her words. She figured nobody must’ve told him they were sorry for what happened to his arm, or acknowledge the loss he still felt of his left arm even though it had been replaced with a vibranium arm, “I like to call myself a reader. I can sense the emotions and feelings of those around me and if I touch you, I can manipulate those feelings. For example, I can make someone feel more cooperative with a single touch. I can provide happiness. Love. There is the darker side to it though. I can also make people feel pain, feel like their drowning, feel like they’re on fire or in the deepest pit of despair.” She said, looking down at her gloved hands, “Sometimes when I touch people, I can’t help but try and make them feel better. Touching people lets me feel their emotions more personally than just sensing them. It’s an automatic response to try and help fix it but I believe that everybody has a reason for feeling how they do and they can choose need to sort through their own emotions on their own.”
Bucky swallowed hard at her words. Only one question came into his mind of her and he was halfway worried to ask it. As if she knew he was dancing around the question, she smiled over to him encouragingly and the question just sort of slipped out, “Can you make someone feel relief? Feel…. less guilty?”
Y/N bit her lip at his question, watching him for a moment before pulling off one of her red gloves and setting her hand in the middle of the table outstretched towards him, palm face up to give him the choice to touch her.
Bucky looked down at her hand, hesitating whether he should touch her or not but curiosity got the best of him. He wanted to feel some sort of relief. Sure, he had made all his amends in the notebook but that didn’t mean he felt any sort of relief, any sort of happiness or hope. He slowly took the glove off of his right flesh hand, reaching out and hovering his hand over her’s for a moment before looking into her eyes and resting his fingertips into her palm. Immediately at the touch of her skin, a slow sense of relief filled his body and he closed his eyes at the feeling. He tilted his head back slightly and his lips parted the smallest bit at the feeling he had longed to feel. It was relief and hope with no guilt anywhere in his body or mind. He wanted to stay like this forever, keep this feeling inside him even if it wasn’t truly real. He didn’t notice his hand had moved to hold her’s, gripping tightly not wanting to let go. After a few minutes, he opened his eyes to look down at their hands and quickly pulled away, “I’m sorry.. for lingering… I shouldn’t have…”
Y/N shook her head at him, pulling her hand back and putting the glove back on, “Don’t worry about it, I’m happy to help anytime you need it. I’ll help you until you don’t need me to feel relief, hope. Although, if you do come to me to for help, you do have to teach me some self defense. I pretty much know nothing and Steve says you know everything about it.”
Bucky’s lips twitched into a small smile and he nodded slowly, “Alright. You have a deal.”
Bucky stood outside the landing pad, his arms crossed as he watched the quinjet touch down. There had been a new organization that had made themselves known called the Peace Keepers. They had a mission to capture all known people with any type of superhuman abilities or those they deemed posed a threat to the rest of the ‘normal’ population. They were ruthless, kidnapping any type of enhanced human and either making an example out of them or the person was never seen again. They didn’t have very many leads so when Steve got word that a local police department in Seattle had captured one of the Peace Keepers, he immediately took Y/N and Sam with him to try and confront him. Bucky always worried when Y/N went on missions even though he had trained her well in offense and defense, she was still a human and could get hurt easily. As the quinjet bay doors opened, Bucky’s arms uncrossed at the sight. Sam and Steve were walking out shaking their heads at each other with grim looks on their faces. Bucky immediately started walking towards them at a brisk pace, his eyes scanning for any sign of Y/N. When he didn’t see her, he looked to Steve, “Where is she? What happened?” But the look in Steve’s eyes was all he needed to confirm the fear he had.
Steve sighed and shook his head slightly, a defeated look written all over his face, “It was a set up, Buck. I’m sorry, the Peace Keepers took her.”
It’s been a few months since Bucky met Y/N. He hated to admit it but he liked being around her. She could sense his emotions and knew when he just needed to sit in silence or when he needed to talk and it was comforting to know someone had some sort of understanding of what he was going through. She helped him whenever he needed whether it be someone to talk to, to sit with, or even using her ability to help him when he was feeling the worst. Y/N seemed so pure to him, like a ray of sunshine in the dark world that surrounded him. He always felt at his best when she was in his presence even if she wasn’t using her ability. He loved training with her, even if he was a little tough on her at times she never held it against him. She was a quick learner and even asked him to teach her some knife tricks after he showed her his extensive knife collection.
Tonight was a bad night for Bucky though. Every time he closed his eyes the nightmares of the Winter Soldier took over his mind. He was waking up what seemed like every ten minutes dripping in sweat and he could feel himself slowly breaking due to the lack of sleep and anxiety that riddled his body. He pulled himself out of his bed, pulling on some grey sweatpants and a black t-shirt before walking out of his room. It was early in the morning hours and he thought nobody would be up, but as if Y/N knew he needed some help, she was sitting outside where they usually sat every night waiting for him with a twelve pack of beer sitting on the table. Bucky couldn’t help but smile a little at the sight before taking a seat in the chair next to her, grabbing a beer and opening it before taking a long swig, “You waiting for me?” He asks her after putting the bottle back on the table. He had never seen so much skin exposed on her. She was wearing a tank top, no gloves, and long black pajama pants with red roses on them. He had never seen her arms before and just now he noticed she had small tattoos littering both arms, but they weren’t so much a sleeve as just randomly placed across her skin like she just closed her eyes and picked a spot.
Y/N shrugs over to him, taking a sip of her already open beer, “I figured I’d meet you out here eventually. I’m three beers in, Barnes. You got some catching up to do.”
“Bucky.” He said to her and when she looked at him sort of confused he quickly added, “Call me Bucky, that’s what I meant.”
Y/N smiles and nods, “Alright, Bucky. Does this mean I’m part of the super exclusive Bucky Barnes friend group?”
“That sounds like something Sam told you.” Bucky responds with a small smile, bringing the bottle up to his lips again for a drink.
“Oh yeah, he very much told me that.” She responded with a soft laugh, “But I am extremely honored to be accepted into the group.”
Bucky chuckles over to her, finishing the rest of his beer and setting the empty bottle on the table before grabbing another one, “One down, two to go.” He told her, cracking open the next bottle. His eyes lingered over her tattoos, wondering what they all meant to her, “I didn’t know you had tattoos.”
Y/N shrugs slightly, looking down at her own arms at the scattered ink, “Oh yeah, I mostly keep them covered up so nobody accidentally brushes my skin and gets feelings they aren’t ready to feel.”
Bucky nods, “What do they mean to you?” He asks curiously, wanting to know more about her.
Y/N looks down and points at three butterflies that were placed above her wrist, looking like they were flying up her arms, “This one reminds me that I’m free.” She moves to point to another one that was a purple iris with a date in the stem, “This is for my mom. She passed away from cancer a few years ago. She was the only one that loved me unconditionally.” She moved to one that was just the number thirteen in a fancy font, “This is my lucky number.” She looked at her other arm and pointed to a small yellow sunflower, “My favorite flower. My mom used to send me to pick wild sunflowers when my dad was home. He wasn’t a very good man.” Her eyes flickered to Bucky who was nodding each time she explained, entranced with her tattooed skin so she continued, pointing to one that looked like a human heart, “This one is to remember to wear my heart on my sleeve because I’m cheesy like that. I have a lot more but they’re all covered up right now.”
Bucky nodded, slightly smiling at the last one before noticing one she hadn’t pointed out yet. It was in the crook of her elbow where someone would put an IV but it had the red cursive words ‘fuck you’ around a large circular scar, “And that one?” He asks, pointing towards it and raising an eyebrow. All her other tattoos were cute but this one had a curse word plastered right on her skin.
Y/N looked down at it, biting her lip gently before looking up towards him and taking a sip of her beer before she spoke, “That one is for my dad. Like I said, he wasn’t a good man. He put out a cigar there, hence the scar and I decided to tattoo fuck you on it.” She said, and even though the story of her childhood wasn’t one she liked to share, she would always be honest with Bucky. Her father was a very abusive man and eventually the abuse went from only on her mother to her until she and her mom ran away to get away from him.
Bucky looked at her sadly for a moment, wondering what her childhood was like. Her father sounded evil from the bits she shared, but yet here she was all sunshine and smiles through her pain. He felt a small bit of jealousy for the way she was able to handle trauma, but mostly just sadness for her and a need to protect her from those things, “I’m sorry, Y/N.”
Y/N shrugs at him, “It’s alright. It’s a part of me that made me who I am even if it is a dark and twisted part. I like who I am now, and even if I don’t like how I got here, the best I can do is keep moving forward.” She watched him for a moment before tilting her head, “So what has you coming out here at this hour looking for me?”
Bucky swallowed dryly, bringing his beer bottle up to his lips and taking a long drink before answering her, “Nightmares have been bad tonight.” He said quietly, almost as if ashamed to seem weak as he looked down at his ungloved hands, “Every time I get to sleep I just see him. The things he did. I didn’t want to bother you so I was coming out here to find some peace.” He looked over to her, “But here you are, waiting for me.”
Y/N smiled gently over to him, reaching her hand across the table for him to touch if he’d like. As she watched him reach out his flesh hand to touch her’s, she pulled back a little, “Answer me this first, Bucky.” She said, “How are you feeling right now?”
Bucky’s brow furrowed at her words, blinking a little as he thought about it. How did he feel? Certainly better than when he first trudged out here. Talking to Y/N calmed him, just being in her presence made the anxiety and panic he felt in his body melt away. He slowly looked at her, “I feel… Better.”
“No, Bucky.” Y/N told him, shaking her head gently, “I know exactly what you feel, remember? You feel relieved. You feel hopeful. All on your own without needing my touch.” She said with a smile over towards him, watching his lips curve into a small smile at her words, “My ability may be a quick cheat to getting you what you need to feel, but what is even better is when you can feel that all by yourself without my touch.”
“I like your touch though.” Bucky blurted out before flinching at his own words.God he must’ve sounded like an idiot, “I… uhm…” He said, scanning his brain for anyway to cover that up.
Y/N chuckles and smiles at him, reaching over and taking his hand in her’s, “That’s alright. I like your touch too.” She said, “We’ve done this enough times I’ve figured out how to keep myself from messing with your emotions when I touch you. So whatever you’re feeling right now, that’s all you buddy. You’re stronger than you know.”
Bucky smiled over at her, immediately feeling something at her touch. He didn’t know what it was but he believed her when she said he wasn’t toying with his emotions at her touch. He felt warm but his stomach was also twisting. No, not twisting. He didn’t know what the feeling in his stomach was, but all he knew was that he liked it. Could this be happiness he was feeling? Happiness that wasn’t given to him by her ability, but by the way she spoke to him and touched him.
Bucky immediately lost his temper, punching his vibranium arm into a wall that easily collapsed around it and formed a large hole. Y/N had been taken. His safe place had been taken from him. He should’ve gone with them on the mission, he had tried but Steve told him they had it handled. He felt lost in guilt and anger, wondering if Y/N was one of the bodies they would find days later or if she was going to be one of the enhanced humans that were taken only to never be seen again.
“We’ll get her back,” Sam said, placing a comforting hand on Bucky’s shoulder which was quickly shrugged away, “I got redwing trying to track down the trucks they escaped in.”
Bucky turned to look at Sam, an angry vein popping out of his neck, “Oh, we are just going to rely on your stupid little mechanical bird then? Hope that it can figure shit out?”
“Calm down, Buck.” Steve said, folding his arms across his chest and stepping to stand between the two, “It’s not his fault, he’s trying to help.”
“No, you’re right Steve.” Bucky said, turning his angry glare to his best friend, “It’s yours. If you would’ve just let me come maybe none of this would’ve happened. I wouldn’t have let them take her. I would’ve protected her.”
Steve raised an eyebrow at Bucky at his choice of words, looking at Sam and giving him a nod as if to tell him that they needed a minute. Once Sam was out of earshot, he turned his attention back to Bucky, “We didn’t let her get taken. We were ambushed. It was a set up, Buck.” He said sternly, “What’s gotten into you?” His gaze softened a little bit at the look in Bucky’s eyes, “She has, hasn’t she?”
Bucky looked around, anywhere but meeting Steve’s gaze because he was right. He had developed feelings for Y/N and now that she was out of his grasp, taken away from him he was realizing everything he felt for her. It wasn’t just friendship. The night he talked to her when she showed him her tattoos and held his hand that feeling in his stomach was butterflies, a crush forming and he didn’t get the chance to tell her. Now he didn’t know if he would see her again, “She has, Steve…” Bucky finally softly said, “She’s like an angel that just came into my life and showed me how to process through things. Showed me what it’s like to have hope, happiness. Relief.” His flesh hand came up to run through his long hair, “And now she’s gone, taken. And we don’t know where or what is happening to her and I’ve never told her how important she is to me.”
Steve put a hand on Bucky’s shoulder, trying not to smile at the fact Bucky had found someone because the circumstances wouldn’t allow it. But he was genuinely happy that Bucky was doing better and vowed to himself that he would do everything to get Y/N back for Bucky, “Y/N can read your emotions as soon as she enters the same room as you. She knows, Bucky.” He told him, squeezing his shoulder gently, “And we will get her back so you can tell her. I promise.”
“I know why you’re always eating those plums.” Y/N said, looking at Bucky who had pulled a plum out to snack on after training with her.
Bucky raised an eyebrow at her, throwing the plum up in the air before catching it, a small grin on his lips, “Oh yeah? Why’s that?”
Y/N smiles, reaching out and taking the plum from him in her gloved hand and looking at it, “Plums have antioxidants to protect the brain from cell degeneration and also help with memory. I would actually be surprised if you didn’t eat them constantly.” She told him, holding the plum back to him to take.
Bucky shook his head and couldn’t help but chuckle a little at her correct answer. When he was regaining his memory, he did extensive study on foods that helped your brain and memory and plums happened to be his favorite, “You’re smart, Y/N.”
“I know.” Y/N said with a smile.
Y/N opened her eyes slowly, groaning to herself. The last thing she remembered is that she was trying to get a read on the Peace Keeper in custody before the station they were in was ambushed by many more minions of the Peace Keepers. As Sam and Steve fought them off, a man came face to face with her. They fought for a little bit before the man pressed a syringe into her neck, causing the world to fade to darkness around her. Now, as she looked around the room she was in, she noticed she was strapped to a chair with duct tape in a small cement room almost like a cell. Her attention was caught when a man entered through the steel door in front of her, tilting her head slightly. She could feel his emotions and all he exuded was dominance and power.
“Welcome, Y/N.” He said towards her, his long blonde hair was pulled back into a bun, “I’m so excited you’re here. I have such great plans for you.”
“What are you thinking about, Bucky?” Y/N asks, laying on the grass next to him as they looked up at the stars. She didn’t wear her gloves around him anymore or hide her skin which made her feel more comfortable, more herself.
Bucky’s arms were stretched behind his head, his eyes glued to the dark sky that was littered with twinkling stars, “My amends. After I came back from the blip, Steve and Sam helped me get pardoned by the government except I had to do these therapy sessions. I had a list of everybody that either used the Winter Soldier or those the Winter Soldier wronged, wanting to make amends.”
Y/N turned onto her side to look at him, studying his face, “Did you finish your list?”
Bucky tilted his head over to look at her, “I did. Feels like I didn’t though.” He told her honestly. He was always honest with Y/N. She was the only other person that was easy to talk to besides Steve.
Y/N narrowed her eyes at him as if trying to figure something out just by looking at him, “Maybe it’s because you didn’t put your own name on the list. The Winter Soldier wronged you too, Buck. Maybe it’s time to start making amends to yourself so you can truly finish your amends list. Tell yourself that you are James Bucky Barnes, not the Winter Soldier anymore, and that you would like to make amends. Maybe it’ll make you feel like it’s complete.”
Bucky stared at her in awe. How did Y/N do that? How did she saw all the right things at the right time to him like she knew what he needed to hear? He moved his right hand to reach over and grip onto her’s, intertwining their fingers with a smile before looking up at the stars, “I think you’re right.”
“Well I don’t want to brag, but I usually am.”
Redwing returned to Sam after two weeks and losing track of where the Peace Keepers and Y/N were taken which only irritated Bucky more. He wanted to go to Seattle immediately and look for her himself but just when he was arguing with Steve and Sam about it, all the monitors in the briefing room suddenly turned on and started flashing imagines of the Peace Keeper’s symbol before footage of Y/N appeared on the screen. There were people holding her and making her touch a wall over and over again, holding her up even though she looked like she was asleep and collapsing. A voice started speaking on the screens though it seemed like it had been disguised because it was so deep, “As you can see and already know, we have taken one of your team. Y/N Y/L/N. We may not have the technology or methods used to create the obedience the Winter Soldier had, but we have our own methods.” The screen changed to show Y/N being tortured in different ways, breaking down her psyche by forcing her to do things and if she refused, she was either struck or was forced into freezing cold water. They were breaking her down and turning her submissive to their will. Bucky flinched at the images, he had trained her to fight and defend herself but not how to stay strong under torture, “Breaking down the mind, spirit and soul of a being is messy, but our methods are effective. Within one week of continuous strain on her mind due to no sleep and our training, Y/N has become submissive to simple commands. By week two, she has completely bent to our will and we unlocked her abilities to make it so she doesn’t have to touch people to manipulate them. With her, we will be able to bend anybody to our will.” The images changed from Y/N being tortured to her causing them to scream in pain that they felt like they were on fire and scratch at their skin until they were ripping their own skin off, “Let this be a warning to all enhanced beings. We will find you. We will bend you to our will. We will make you our soldiers. You are dangerous and the Peace Keepers will keep you in line.” Then the screens turned off.
Bucky shook his head, “I’ve read everything on brainwashing when I got my memories back. They’re using old soviet methods as well as methods L. Ron Hubbard used.”
“The scientology guy?” Sam asks confused as to what he had to do with anything.
Bucky nodded over to him, folding his arms tightly across his chest, “They believed that if you could make someone do something as simple like only touching a wall over and over again for days without sleep, food, or water, they could break your will and psyche. Make you do anything. That’s what they did to her, making her believe her only purpose is to do what they say or there will be punishment.” Steve ran his hand through his blonde hair slowly processing the information, “So she’s basically brainwashed. Not only can she manipulate emotions but she can make people feel pain instantly without touching them now, make them feel like they’re on fire until their bodies just give out.” He looked over to Sam and Bucky, “They’re going to find more enhanced humans to do this to, use her to make them comply with their orders.”
Bucky nodded, trying his best to get the images of Y/N being tortured out of his mind and remember her as she really is. He felt anger but going on a rampage wasn’t going to help at this point, “And where do we know of that they keep a bunch of enhanced beings?” “The Raft prison.” Sam said with a sigh. He’d been locked up there before until Steve broke them out. It was an awful place but if Steve could break his team members out, the Peace Keepers and their followers sure as hell could with the help of Y/N/
“Tell me about yourself, Bucky. Not the things I know…” Y/N said as they walked along the grass, twirling a wildflower between her fingers, “Who you really were in the forties.”
Bucky had his hands tucked in his jean pockets as they walked, “Oh, darlin, you would’ve loved me.” He said looking over to her with a grin, “All the girls did. I was kind of a player.”
Y/N laughs a little, “A player, huh? I don’t think I could picture that. So you used to be cocky and confident then?”
“Hell yeah.” Bucky said to her, “I had ladies lining up just to dance with Sergeant James Barnes. Always had my arms over at least two women’s shoulders.”
Y/N rolls her eyes at him with a smile, “Alright, I get it. You were the ladies man of the 1940’s.” She said, glancing up at him, “So, ladies man, were you ever in love? A lucky lady waiting for the handsome Sergeant Barnes back home?”
Bucky squinted his eyes into the distance at the question before looking over at her with that crooked smile only she could bring out of him, “Nah, nobody waiting for me except my family. But I once spent all my money trying to win a girl named Dot a prize at Cooney Island. Does that count as love?” He asks before stopping in his spot and tilting his head down at her, “Wait, you think I’m handsome?”
“I don’t think spending all your money on a woman counts. I think that’s just called being a Sugar Daddy.” Y/N stopped her steps when he did, turning and looking at him with a smirk, “Oh like you didn’t already know how handsome you are Mr. Cocky and Confident Ladies Man.”
When Sam, Steve, and Bucky arrived at the Raft prison on the quinjet, they were already under attack by the Peace Keepers. The only thing they had on their side was the element of surprise. They had discussed a plan on the way. Sam and Steve would keep the Peace Keepers busy while Bucky tried to get to Y/N. They infiltrated quickly, taking down the vast amount of the Peace Keeper followers until the got to the detention level where the enhanced beings were kept. That was where Y/N and the leaders of the Peace Keepers were, unlocking cells one by one and using Y/N to cause them pain or make them complicit to be captured. Steve and Sam immediately went to fighting the leaders of the Peace Keepers, pushing them into cells and slamming them shut to seal them in.
One of the Peace Keeper leaders stood next to Y/N. He turned to her, “Take them out.” He ordered.
Y/N looked at him with what could be considered dead, emotionless eyes before looking to Sam and Steve, “Pain.” Was all she said and instantly, Sam and Steve fell to the floor screaming and writhing on the floor.
“Y/N!” Bucky said, kicking one of the Peace Keeper leaders into the cell before turning his full attention on her, “Stop, you don’t want to do this.”
Y/N tilted her head at him and his words, her facial features unchanging. She then looked towards the Peace Keeper leader as it to ask for permission and he nodded toward her. Y/N returns her eyes on Bucky, “Pain.” Bucky winced at the sudden pain that erupted through his whole body besides his left vibranium arm. He clenched his teeth tightly, trying to resist as every point of his body felt like it was on fire and he was being stabbed in every pore at the same time, “Y/N…” He growled out, taking slow steps towards her, “C’mon doll, it’s me, Bucky.” He groaned out, managing to get closer to her even though his body wanted to give out, join Sam and Steve who were still on the floor shaking. He managed to close the distance, using his vibranium arm to land a hard punch to the Peace Keeper leader next to Y/N, knocking him back into an open cell that slammed shut.
Y/N watched Bucky stand in front of her. His skin was covered with thick beads of sweat as he tried to resist the pain she was making him feel, “Paralyze.” She muttered out, watching his body fall to the floor.
Bucky laid on the floor, he couldn’t feel any part of his flesh body. But luckily, his vibranium arm didn’t seem to be affected by Y/N’s abilities. He reached out his vibranium arm, latching onto her ankle and pulling her down on top of him so her hands touched his skin. He needed to let her feel what he did, show her the emotions he felt hoping to ground her, “Y/N, listen to me.” He whispers out to her, feeling the paralysis start to fade when she made contact with his skin, “It’s me, Bucky. Mr. Cocky and Confident Ladies Man, remember?” Feeling his right flesh hand regain feeling, he reached a hand up to touch her cheek, “You are Y/N. Not a pawn for the Peace Keepers. You are everything good and you are as free as the butterflies on tattooed on your skin.”
Y/N shook her head at him, “No. I belong to the Peace Keepers.” She said to him softly. She was about to open her mouth again to cause him pain, but when her focus broke so did the hold she had on Steve and Sam. Sam quickly came flying in and kicked her off of Bucky, slamming her back against a wall hard enough to knock her out and fall to the floor.
Bucky was at her side immediately, glaring over at Sam, “I had it, birdbrain.” He spat out before his features softened as he brushed some hair from Y/N’s unconscious face.
“Yeah. You had all of that handled perfectly, Buck.” Sam said rolling his eyes, “She was about to twist you inside out. I saved you, man.”
Steve was busy informing the back up guards of the Raft prison on what had happened, helping them secure the Peace Keepers and the rest of the enhanced humans who weren’t in their cells.
Bucky lifts Y/N up from the cold floor gently, looking down at her, “I got you, doll. Don’t worry, I’ll take you home.”
“I like this place.” Y/N said, once again sitting with Bucky outside in the darkness of the night sharing a pack of beer as she stared up at the stars.
Bucky looked over at her curiously, wondering what she liked specifically about living at the facility. Their chairs were almost touching with how close they were sitting next to each other, “What do you like about it?”
Y/N turned her head to meet his gaze, “It just feels like home. Haven’t had that feeling in a long time.” A teasing smirk appeared on her lips suddenly towards him, “Plus I get to be a part of this really exclusive group, the Bucky Barnes friend group. Maybe you’ve heard of it? I keep suggesting we get matching jackets or something but nobody seems to agree.”
Bucky let out a laugh at her comment, “God, I’m never living that down. Thanks, Sam.” He said with a roll of his eyes and another swig of his beer, “And I wasn’t apposed to the matching jacket idea. Steve was. He said it would make Sam feel left out.”
Y/N laughed and shook her head, “Couldn’t have that.” She replies, “You may be able to fool everybody else, but I know he’s secretly your other other best friend. First best friend being Steve and the other being myself, then Sam.”
“It’s like being friends with a pigeon.” Bucky snorted, “Yeah, he isn’t all bad. Just sometimes his face does this thing that makes me mad. And he has that stupid RedWing robot he treats like a pet.”
“That thing with his face? That’s emotions, Bucky.” Y/N laughed again, “Emotions are normal. You and Steve are good at hiding your feelings, able to be stoic. But Sam wears all his feelings plain as day on his face. You can’t let that offend you, it’s just him being honest. But RedWing, yeah, I don’t understand why he treats it like a pet. That’s sort of weird.”
Bucky nodded to agree, drinking the rest of his beer he held in his left hand while his right hand subconsciously found Y/N’s intertwining their fingers and giving it a light squeeze.
Bucky looked down at Y/N who laid on the medical table. She seemed a little malnourished from being held captive for two weeks so Dr. Cho had an IV in her arm providing fluids and nutrition her body badly needed. Bucky was by her side constantly while she was under the light sedation Steve had suggested since they didn’t know if she would attack them or not. It had been days since Y/N had been brought back and Bucky was there at every moment he could be, holding onto her hand as they had done many times before. He was hoping, praying that Y/N was feeling all of the emotions he was just by his touch. He cared deeply for her, emotions he hadn’t felt in a long time since before World War II. He hoped she could feel his hope, the relief of her being here with him, the happiness just touching her made him feel… And the love he had been denying he felt for her. Bucky stood from his chair when he saw Y/N’s brow furrow as if she was about to wake up, squeezing her hand gently, “Y/N.” He breathed out to her, “Doll, you with me?”
Y/N opened her eyes lazily to look up at him, sensing his worry when she just stared at him. Slowly a smile came across her lips and she felt the relief instantly flood his body, “Bucky…” She managed to draw out though the sort of slurred from the sedation, “You love me.”
Bucky shook his head and chuckles down to her, “You felt that, huh?”
Y/N nodded slowly, her eyes slowly and lazily blinking, “I feel everything.” She murmurs out, squeezing his hand gently, “I feel honored…. Does this mean you’re gonna spend all your money trying to win me a prize?”
Bucky leans down and presses a soft kiss to her forehead, “Whatever you want, darlin. I’m pretty sure I can win those prizes first try now though.” He grinned down to her, “Rest, doll. I’ll get Dr. Cho to wean you off of the sedation.”
A Week Later
Y/N was pretty much back to normal. She had a few nightmares that kept lingering due to the torture she endured and the things she was forced to do. Bucky helped her through it, knowing himself what it felt like to forced to be a pawn and go through the haunting nightmares. He made an open invitation to his bedroom towards her, allowing her to come and snuggle up next to him so she didn’t feel alone. They hadn’t discussed what was said when Y/N came out of sedation, the whole Bucky loves her thing which made him worry and panic that she didn’t feel the same way.
Y/N and Bucky sat outside in their normal spot, sharing this time a bottle of whiskey. Their hand were interlocked and they were laughing about some story about how Steve used to have to wear newspapers in his shoes prior to being all super soldier. Then it got quiet and Bucky was staring over at Y/N, examine every feature on her face. Y/N looked over and met his gaze, “What you worrying about?”
Bucky smiles slightly, of course she felt his worry. He looked down at the whiskey glass in his hand before placing it on the table in front of them. He stood up, pulling her up with him while his other hand grabbed her glass and put it next to his on the table. Bucky kept his flesh hand interlocked with her’s, bringing his vibranium one up to gently stroke the skin on her cheek with his finger tips, “I love you.” He breathed out to her.
Y/N smiles and tilts her head at him, “I know.” She told him, squeezing his hand lightly and taking a step closer. She licks her lips, narrowing her eyes at him.
Bucky tilted his head at her, suddenly feeling overwhelming feelings of warmth flooded his body. It felt like electricity was running through his bones, enough to power cities. It was pure happiness like he'd never felt before. It was so powerful, it felt like magic, "What're you doing, sweetheart?"
Y/N's eyes flickered between his eyes and his lips, "I'm showing you how you make me feel, Bucky." She said softly to him, "Because I love you too." Bucky grinned down at her at the sound of her reciprocation of love, moving his vibranium hand to the back of her neck and pulling her face towards his, connecting their lips in a deep kiss. His tongue traced her bottom lip until her lips parted, allowing his tongue access to intertwine with hers. After a few moments, he pulled away and looked down at her with nothing but happy eyes, “You’re my girl.”
Y/N smiled at him brightly, slightly breathless from the kiss between them, “And you’re my home, Bucky Barnes.”

synopsis: when levi's wife goes into labour, he has to drop the crude, cold façade he normally holds and be there in their time of need.
tw: possible inaccuracies as i have never been pregnant before LOL, reader is labouring, occasional use of she/her throughout, levi being soft ASF (self-indulgent all the way.)
--
You turned your head at the sound of the door and almost immediately, you felt the wintery gust flood through the narrow hallway of your house. You sucked in a breath, but you quickly smiled. After all, your husband had returned to your cosy cottage.
He shut the door behind him, and you saw him lean his head against it, heaving a great sigh. You frowned at how he almost always needed those few seconds to just process everything in his head before turning to face you. You instinctively brought a hand down to your swollen tummy - was this a good decision after all? Having a baby in these troubling, turbulent times?
But then he turned around again to face you and his face was illuminated by the amber-coloured light of the oil lamp. He saw you stirring the steaming pot of stew and his steely gaze softened immediately.
He smiled.
Don’t be silly, you chastised yourself for such thoughts, he’s happy with us.
Of course he was. He could calm down instantly looking at you. He walked over and shrugged off his forest green cloak and placed it on the counter next to you. War-torn hands reaching out and cupping your cheeks, he pressed his lips to your forehead. You felt his calloused thumbs rub against your temples and you leaned into his touch. Immediately his hands fell to your tummy and rubbed in circles.
“Dinner smells good,” he whispers softly against your lips, “how was your day?”
Dinner did smell good; nothing could beat some beef stew after a long day with your cast iron kettle hanging over the fire, right? He couldn’t wait until your bellies were filled and he could cosy up with you in front of the fire with a cup of black tea in his hand.
Your smile grew wider when he sank to his knees and nuzzled against your tummy. You were probably going to give birth in the next week or two. You lowered your right hand and allowed it to tread through his raven locks, your other hand still stirring to prevent any sticking to your pot.
“Eh…” you huffed out.
Levi pulled back for a bit. “Had an ‘eh’ day myself… What’s troubling you?”
“Just very crampy today and my back is killing me. Why did you have an ‘eh’ day?”
You almost laughed when you heard Levi’s heavy sigh, and it was a long sigh too. He closed his eyes as he recounted the disaster at HQ but… what with the amount of grief Levi had been through, there was very little that could faze him now.
Still, when he recounted to you that Hange accidentally launched one of their new projects - a thunder spear - into HQ and close to his office at that - while he was drinking his tea! - obviously he would be pretty livid. All that was destroyed in the fires of the aftermath were two bedrooms and a storage room, and thankfully no lives were lost, but he wasn’t going to forgive Hange for a while after this. You had to give him credit for his composure.
“I miss Hange, even in spite of these incidents.” You spoke.
You hadn’t seen Hange since you were discharged by Erwin at three months. Well, you had waved at her in the streets when you did your shopping for you and Levi and you might converse briefly, but she was always too busy to stop by for a chat. She did, however, say she’d be present for the birth.
“I bet he’d get along with Hange.”
“Still sure we’re having a boy?” your husband asked.
You yawned as exhaustion began to consume you more and more. “Yeah, he is giving me a lot of trouble like how his father used to.” You teased.
Levi only muttered something under his breath, and you weren’t quite sure what it was. He leaned back a bit and extended his index finger. “Oi, stop giving your mother a hard time. She’s tired.”
Another yawn. “I am, actually. I might pass on dinner tonight and just head to bed.”
Levi stood up again and eyed you curiously; wasn’t like you to skip dinner but he thought nothing of it. He mentioned he’d save some for you and with a chaste kiss to your lips, you made your way upstairs.
You opened the creaky, wooden door to your shared bedroom and when you disrobed, you rooted around for a clean nightgown in your drawers. You groaned as another sharp pain radiated around your lower back and pelvic area. You held onto the edge of the drawers with a white-knuckle grip. You had gotten cramps here and there before throughout your pregnancy, but these were just all-consuming. A few more whimpers and a few deep breaths though, and they subsided.
Hmm, weird, there’s no way it’s time already? I’m still a week or two early, you said to yourself. If he wants to come now, what will happen… would he be healthy?
You shook your head and made your way over to the bed, propping yourself up with a few pillows. It wasn’t long before Levi came into the room too with a candle in his hand before placing it down on his desk. As he removed his shirt, the dull light illuminated and highlighted his defined body. You smiled dozily at him and you were fast asleep before he could even climb into bed.
.
.
.
Awaking in the middle of the night with your husband’s arms wrapped around you was always a treat. He didn’t always sleep, and when he did, it was poor. But whenever his arms snaked around your chest with one hand resting on your tummy, you knew he was sleeping well. It gave you a chance to look at his unguarded and peaceful countenance.
You woke up with a feeling of heartburn that was hard to ignore so you decided a drink of water might be a good idea. You made your way downstairs, careful not to wake your sleeping husband. Leaning against the countertop once you reached the kitchen, you fetched yourself a glass of water and began to sip slowly.
Gulping the last bit down, you placed the glass in a sink and walked towards the stairs again… until you felt a gush of warm liquid flow down your legs.
Oh, crap!
You peered down at the pool of fluid between your legs that was now pooling in your hallway. Your mind froze and all you could do was stare for a few seconds.
“U-uh… Levi?!” you shrieked.
You heard a large thud from upstairs when he landed less than gracefully - unceremoniously, even - after jumping from your bed and he was quick to scurry down the stairs at the yell.
“What the hell?! Are you ok--?”
He stopped when his bare feet splashed against the pool of fluids between you both.
“Oh, my?” he questioned and peered down. “Is it that time already?”
You only blinked at his calmness at the situation. How was he not freaking out?! Your fingers moved to clench your soaking gown. He reached for your hands and walked you towards the front door. He stopped for a few seconds as he scratched his head in thought.
“Levi?!” you screeched at his silence.
He had to stay as calm as possible. It was something he was well used to, being a good captain and all. But it was so different in this situation. Seeing you panic like this and the gravity of the situation made him almost lose his composure. He was able to keep everything well hidden beneath his steely exterior and this was all because he was good at analysing typically abnormal situations.
This wasn’t a situation like this. All he had to do was be a supportive husband for you.
As he hurried down the stairs again, the realization dawned on him again.
Was this actually happening? Were you two going to be parents? Could you two do this?
Well, it was not like you had a choice now.
“Come, let’s get moving.” He said, holding you with one hand by the small of your back.
He assisted you back up the stairs as fast as your body would allow, but once you got to the bathroom just a few metres shy of your bedroom, that’s when you felt everything tighten and your breath became lodged in your throat. Your legs buckled as your hands gripped onto the architrave. Levi was quick to descend with you and hold your hand. A pained groan escaped your lips and you heard deep breaths beside you.
“Deep breaths, you can do it, [F/n]...” he said as he rubbed your back in circles. He tried to do deep breathing with you, taking long, exaggerated breaths. All to feel you a little less alone or too lost in your own pain.
It wasn’t the worst pain you had experienced - you were a former veteran of the Scouts after all - but that didn’t make the feeling pleasant either.
He propped up all the pillows to give you ample support and he placed a hand on your shin, gesturing you to keep your legs open. It seemed that the next contraction seemed to be taking its time, so he made the decision to alert the neighbours. This was a plan Levi had made with them a few months ago, that he’d call next door and ask them to go rush to the nurses and for Hange. Luckily for you two, HQ was no more than a five-minute walk away.
After slipping into a dress shirt and black slacks, he ran down the stairs and hopped over the wall to your neighbour. It was close to midnight now, but hopefully they’d be awake… If not, he’d have to leave you alone by yourself and that was not an option.
He rapped on the door and even called out to them, before knocking again. Thankfully, the middle-aged man and his wife seemed to be up and were quick to open the door.
Perhaps Levi looked a bit more flustered than he thought he did. Then again, as someone so composed all the time, any change in composure screamed out.
“Captain Levi? Is everything alright?” the wife asked.
Levi inhaled sharply. Damn, he was getting stressed already. If they were to shine the oil lamp up to his face, they would be able to see the sweat beading at his brows and how his pupils had narrowed from the intensity of the situation. “[F/n] has gone into labour, earlier than we expected. She needs the nurses a-and Hange--” Fuck, was he stuttering from it all? “I can’t leave her alone to get them and-”
The wife who was probably a good three inches shorter than him looked up at him and passed him a soft smile; a reassuring smile. She had been through all this before. She knew the chaos involved but knew the best thing he could be was a pillar of support for you. She placed her hands on his shoulders and got her to look at him. Normally he’d shrug off any physical contact from anyone that wasn’t you, but his mind was spiralling, and he was doing his best to hide it.
“Levi, it’s okay. Dear, you go get the nursing staff and Hange, okay?” she called out to her husband who had already saddled up in the meantime and taken off. “My husband will be back soon. Let me get you a few things.”
Levi tapped his foot impatiently as she pattered around the house for a bit. She came back with a bag of rags, towels and some knitted clothes.
“It’s important you stay calm, okay? What do you think you’ll have?”
Levi shrugged as he nodded his thanks. “I don’t know, of course, but [F/n] reckons we’ll have a boy.”
“Hmm… I think you’ll have a daughter!” she beamed.
Levi began to head out the door again. “Look, thank you so much for everything.”
“Best of luck, Levi,” she wished with a gleeful smile, “and congratulations.”
Levi nodded with the bag and headed back up the stairs of his home. He burst through the door of your bedroom and was immediately at your side again. He dropped the bag down at your bedside and reached for your hand. He caught you just in time for another contraction. You tried to steady yourself, but you cried out once more and gripped onto the blankets as another contraction overwhelmed you. You hastily grabbed a pillow and cried into it, trying to muffle your cries. Okay, it was official, this was the worst pain you had felt thus far, and all Levi could do was stare helplessly.
It’s not like he could do much. He couldn’t take away the pain from you, but by god, he wished he could. He’d deliver the child if biologically possible, anything to not see you in so much agony. But every time a contraction died away, you would re-emerge and tackle this again with an ungodly amount of strength.
And he couldn’t be prouder of you in these agonizing yet awe-inspiring moments.
You lowered your pillow when you vaguely heard the crowd of nurses patter into the room and everything kicked off. The lead nurse stated she’d be the main overseer to everything. At times, Levi’s mind flitted in and out of the conversation at hand from the nurses. His stare glossed over occasionally, and you couldn’t exactly decipher what it was he was feeling. Whatever it was he was feeling, he hid it well. He absent-mindedly rubbed the small of your back hoping you’d relax as the nurse checked your cervix. His ears perked up once he heard the number ‘three.’
“Three centimetres, seven to go, I reckon.”
“OOH, SEVEN?! HOW EXCITING!” a voice from outside screeched and Levi’s face fell flat. The bespectacled brunette burst through the door. “THAT’S SO FEW!”
“Hange.” Levi barked. He said nothing but his gaze said, be quiet now. “If you’re not gonna be helpful to [F/n], you can leave out the door you came in.”
“Sorry, sorry,” she aired as she rushed over to the other side of your bed and sat on top. “How are you doing, [f/n]? Anything I can do?” she asked. At first you shook your head, but when she mentioned that she brought a few scented candles to help soothe you - or at the very least, keep a gentle ambiance going - you perked up. “Okay, I’ll go light them. Levi, do you have any matches?”
“In the high cupboard left to the sink.” He said and she scurried down.
“Fuck… Levi, it’s happening again…” you groaned as you tossed your head back.
“I have you.” He reminded. He loosened his hand so you could squeeze it. With each contraction came a pain that dominated your entire being. In those moments, for those seconds that stretched into infinity, there was nothing else. Every contraction seemed to hurt more than before, and you would be left panting and almost delirious for a few seconds. Everything melted into the background when a contraction came; the nurses melted to nothing as did their encouraging cries.
But you remained grounded to Levi. He held your hand with every contraction and his lips were pressed to your sweaty temple. While you could only vaguely hear his encouraging words, he was still there and encouraging you to breathe deeply through it all, even if it hardly did anything to alleviate the pain.
“How much longer will this take?”
“She progressed quickly enough to get to the three so it may not take too long. Though it could just as easily be another few hours, or even well into tomorrow. I’m sorry, there’s no way of knowing.” The nurse replied.
Levi only nodded. He just wanted you to be okay and to make this as pain-free as possible. Hange came back in with the matches and began to light a few candles.
As time passed, your head fell. The contractions kept coming but you weren’t progressing as fast as you thought. By the time the second hour rolled by, you had only made it to four centimetres. You were reminded that you’d know when to push.
Levi couldn’t stand to see you in so much pain.
“Is there anything we can do?” he asked, now getting slightly panicked.
The nurse smiled sadly, knowing there was only so much they could do. “[F/n], how about a walk out in the fresh air?” she offered.
Levi peered over at you. Within the past two hours, he had acquired a basin and wet cloth, and was dabbing it occasionally on your forehead. “How about it?” he asked, repeating the motion of it as you lifted your head up again to receive his touch.
“If I walk down those stairs, I don’t think I’ll make it back up…” you huffed.
Hange had taken to holding your other hand too. Levi’s initial glare at her excitement seemed to do the trick and she was very helpful. Perhaps more proactive than the nurses. Then again, she was your best friend; she probably wanted to do everything under the sun.
“A bath may help?” Hange perked up. “Warm water and all?” to which you nodded.
Levi stood and pulled you up. Before you may have walked upright and with your back straight, but now you walked totally hunched over. He ordered for someone - anyone who could get there fastest - to draw a bath. A few stayed behind in the bedroom, taking turns supervising you.
Levi walked you towards the bathroom and unbuttoned your nightgown. With an ‘arms up’ command, he had it off you quickly and you were left in just your bra. He lowered you into the bath and you sat in the middle of the tub. He questioned why you weren’t going to lean back and that was when you asked him to come into the bath with you. He wasn’t going to fight you in the moment and rushed back to the bedroom and put on a pair of (swimming) shorts… or shorts he had no issue getting wet. Within mere seconds, he lowered himself into the bath and wrapped his legs loosely around your waist, his chest firm against your back. He began to rub your arms up and down and leaned over to press a kiss to your cheek.
“You’re doing so well.” He said. His tone lowered to a whisper when he heard you begin to weep. “Hey, hey, hey… What’s wrong? Ah-- Hange, can you go get us a basin?” he asked. Your face paled a little and he shouted for the Titan scientist to hurry as another contraction washed over you.
“L-Levi, I don’t feel right…”
“Hange!” he barked for the third time.
You brought a hand up to your mouth and expelled whatever food had been inside you from before. The pain of this contraction was so intense you had thrown up. Levi swept a thumb across your chin and Hange came in with a basin, and you spilled the rest into it. In fact, you threw up twice more. The bitter taste in your mouth left you feeling all disgusting and ‘icky’, and you let out a choked sob of frustration. Your body had you rocking back and forth on its own accord, trying to move with the pain so to speak, letting out pained groans through gnashed teeth.
Levi leaned you forward and began to rub your lower back. “Breathe. You gotta breathe, [f/n], come on.”
You shook your head as you wailed, almost sounding like you were giving in. “I can’t! It’s too much, Levi!”
“Hey,” he called gently. “Sniff the flowers,” he commanded and paused to breathe in, “and blow out the candles” and he exhaled. “You can do that for me?”
You weren’t sure about how the silly visual cue helped you at all, but you also knew Levi wasn’t going to quit saying it until you did what he told you to do. After a few deep breaths, you calmed down and your contraction died away. Levi continued to rub your lower back, offering whispered words of encouragement.
“Gosh, Shorty, aren’t you such a sweetie?” Hange jeered.
“Go away, Four Eyes.”
The contractions came and went, growing more and more intense. Levi sometimes opted to swish the water down and forth or turn on the tap, to give you something else to focus on. You weren’t sure how long you two stayed in the bath, but Levi helped lift you out once the water had gotten cold. Hange went to relight the candles, pillows were propped back up and you were moved back to your bedroom, to do the whole thing all over again.
And frankly, you weren’t sure how long you could hold on for. It was unbearable. As the hours ticked by until the wee morning, you were losing your strength.
“I’m sorry.” Levi mumbled as he kissed your matted hair.
“It hurts so much. I’m so tired.” You whispered, your voice dry and hoarse.
Levi looked up at the nurse and then over at the small clock on your bedside lock. Seven in the morning, so you had been labouring for seven hours, if not more if you were experiencing smaller contractions before your water broke.
How he ached to take all your pain away from you; to shoulder it all and save you from this agony. You both knew it would be worth it at the end, but the process of getting there was no doubt painful.
“You’re doing well. It’ll all be over soon, won’t it?” he asked and looked at the nurse.
“I’ll go see how far you are,” she said, softly. You let your legs widen as she did another cervical exam. You flinched a bit as you felt her gloved fingers inside. She gasped. “My, you’re almost there. Easily nine centimetres!”
For the first time in a couple hours, you felt genuine relief amidst all the chaos and pain.
.
.
.
Levi had sent the nurses and Hange downstairs an hour later, telling them they were free to help themselves to food stored in your cupboards. They had been crowding around you both for over eight hours now, they deserved a break too. You were fine with your husband sitting through your contractions with you, especially when you only had a centimetre or two left.
That was when you felt an excruciating pain down below, unlike anything you had felt all evening. Levi was at your side in seconds.
“What is it?”
“Hnnn!” you groaned out. This was it. This had to be it, the feeling the nurses told you about. An overwhelming amount of pressure was building between your legs and you let out a guttural noise. “Get Hange and the nurses.”
“Wait, is time? Now-”
“Get the fucking nurse, Levi!” you yelled, and he ran down to fetch them.
The pressure had your hips swaying into position, it was almost unbearable to refrain from pushing. The pain had your whole body trembling. Levi arrived back in with the nurses and you opened your legs at the lead nurse’s command. Your husband was sitting by your side once more, lacing his fingers with yours.
“I see a head! And plenty of hair too! The baby has moved into the birth canal. I need you to push on the next contraction.” She explained.
You heaved in massive strokes, starting to lose your breath. You were completely worn out now, body and mind. You all waited with bated breaths for the next contraction to hit. You took in a massive breath when you felt that familiar pain come back again. Your stomach tightened - everything tightened - as a scream ripped out from your throat.
“You have got to push harder, [f/n].” The nurse urged. Hange came in, sitting on the bed and shuffled onto the bed to hold your other hand.
You shook your head. There was no way you could, you were so depleted of energy.
“You can do this.” Your husband said.
“I can’t! You have to do it for me!” you wept into his arms.
“I would if I could.” He assured you.
The nurse called for your attention. “The next time you push, tuck your chin into your chest and push as though you got to do a number two. But push very hard.”
You blinked frantically. “Wait, what if I do poop?”
“That means you’re pushing right!” Hange cheered.
This entire conversation made Levi grimace, and it took every ounce of self-control to not cringe.
The final contraction hit and with whatever strength you could muster, you pushed through with a shrill cry. The baby began to crown, the hot stretching of flesh almost making you want to stop but you had to keep pushing through. You felt the head leave your body and you pushed through the rest of your contraction. You held onto Levi’s hand with such force he was pretty sure you could have broken it. And he would have taken it.
And then the pain left your body finally.
Tiny cries pierced the air.
Levi tilted your head back and his lips crashed against yours in a kiss that carried so many emotions with it; love, adoration, pride, elation and gratitude. He kissed you again and once more while your baby was being wrapped up. One of the extra nurses moved to clean you up and help deliver the placenta.
“A girl, congratulations.” The nurse whispered. Hange cracked a toothy grin, but she knew to step back and leave you two to have your moment.
You looked down at your wrapped-up little miracle, falling in-love instantly. Had her father’s hair and gunmetal eyes, but your eye shape and complexion. She also had your chin too. Your index finger rubbed against her plump cheeks and almost began to whimper again but with a few gentle hushes from you, she settled down once more. She was probably hungry too.
“She looks so much like you…” you whispered, looking up at your husband. The nurses and Hange took this as their cue to leave. Levi’s eyes had completely glossed over with a newfound vulnerable expression that you had never seen before. You could tell he was just itching to hold her, so as gently as you could, you shuffled over to the side to allow Levi to relax into the headrest. “Here, Levi.”
Your little girl was placed into his arms and a calloused thumb immediately went to trace under her eyes and around her cheeks, her forehead; everywhere. A swell of emotions overcame him like a tsunami crashing against the shoreline and he shut his eyes, tears flowing down his pallid cheeks and he made no effort to stop them. His lower lips trembled, and minute whimpers escaped his lips, but he was desperately clawing at whatever composure he had left to try to piece himself back together.
But he could cry, his daughter was here. He was a father now; he could be as emotional as he liked, and no one would care.
“Isabel.” You said, gently, and Levi nodded at the suggestion.
Levi’s thumb moved to his daughter’s fist and her fingers latched around it instantly, bringing his thumb to her mouth and began to suck. He let out a soft chuckle. “I think she’s hungry.”
“I bet she is.” You said, reaching out and taking a hold of her once more. The baby began to wriggle, and her arms broke free from the blanket, beginning to fuss. You lowered one side of your nightgown and held your daughter against your breast. She latched after a few seconds and by god was it uncomfortable. The feeling had you biting your lower lip in discomfort, but you just had to grin and bear it.
The three of you sat in silence for another half hour or so as you nursed your baby when you heard a knock on the door. Hange peeked her head around and smiled widely at you both.
“Shhh.” Levi was quick to say.
Hange tiptoed in. “I may have bought a few visitors…”
The raven-haired man’s face fell flat. “How many?”
And in came all of Levi’s newest squad and Erwin. He face-palmed at the noise and shrugged off his blazer to cover you and your daughter.
“Is this a bad time, Levi?”
“Yes, it’s a bad time. She’s barely been born a half hour and--”
“I KNEW IT WOULD BE A GIRL! TAKE THAT, MISTER DEATH WISH!” you heard come from outside the room. You only sighed softly.
“I tried to keep those two out of this,” Erwin mentioned as he walked over to the two of you. You removed your baby from your breast and buttoned up your nightgown again. The blonde smiled in pure adoration. “She’s so precious. Congratulations, Levi, [F/n].”
“Thank you, Erwin.” He replied and you nodded your thanks.
In your half-asleep state, you began to nurse again in front of everyone, not bothering to cover up. Levi sighed heavily and moved to cover you up again before you came through.
“Sir, we can call back later if you want.” Eren piped up, walking over to stand by his superior.
“It’s okay, Eren, this is natural. I don’t mind, provided you don’t stare too much.”
“I mind?!” Levi cried. With your free hand, you rested it on his hand. He took a deep breath and sighed. “Fine. You can stay, Jaeger. All of you can.”
Sasha and Connie were next to try to squeeze onto your too small bed for nine extra people.
“I brought her some potatoes!” she chimed and handed one to you. You had to politely explain that babies probably won’t eat until four months at the earliest. And even then, it would only be baby gloop and mushy foods. Not steamed potatoes.
Connie peaked over Levi’s shoulder. “Do you mind?” Levi asked him rhetorically.
“Nope,” he answered swiftly and saluted. On the wrong side. “Sir, why does it look squishy and ugly?”
And then ensued a fiery debate from everyone in the room (apart from Erwin) on why you shouldn’t call babies squishy and ugly, especially in front of their parents. Especially if one of those parents was one Levi Ackerman. But amidst all the commotion, both you and your baby were tuckered out. Levi was surprised that he saw you dozing off in spite of all the ruckus and that your baby was suckling away on nothing.
The short man may have had his doubts before Isabel was born but looking at everyone around here right now - being so chaotic and noisy, but so full of happiness and pride for you both - made all those negative thoughts wash away.
It took a bit of shuffling and squeaking of military boots, but eventually everyone was kicked out by Levi. He looked back fondly at you two, both of you sound asleep.
He would promise you both a normal, peaceful, family life one day. Even if he had to lay down his life doing it.
Because every doubt, struggle, emotional outburst, hormonal-fuelled argument led you both to this, and he would not trade it for the world.
This was his purpose; protect his beautiful wife and precious daughter.
And maybe one day, in the distant future, he would be able to spend more time with you two. In a world without Titans. In a world that was peaceful.
But for now, he had a small serving - a slice - of peace at home and he couldn’t wait to navigate this new chapter of his life with you.

Goldenchild part 2
Part 1
Apologies are made and things are set right.
Word count: 2441
CW: mentions of mental illness
Sun sat on the floor of the daycare while you washed his shell. It was maintenance week at the plex, so you were giving him a deep clean. He kept fidgeting and spinning his torso to mess with you. He felt like you were dragging this out, you would typically have been done by now, so he felt no qualms about making the process take even longer.
“Mr.Sun!!! Sit still!! We’re almost done! I’m just waiting on DJ’s handler…” you say.
“DJ’s handler?? What do we need Music Man’s friend for, solar flare? We don’t need their oversized playing cards. We have games here!” Sun replies. Looking at you with his blue eyes.
“Not for games you goof. They accidentally took something for Mr.Moon.”
“For… Moon…? What is it?” Sun asks curiously.
You smack Sun in the face with your wet rag. “Well, you two would know if Mister Sorrowful would stop pouting about a month-old argument!”
Sun stares at you with one red and one blue eye. “Good morning Mr.Moon.” You say.
“ARGUMENT!?? Pfft eh pbleh. Whatever do you mean, starlight?” Sun sputters.
“Don’t play dumb Mr.Sun! I know.” You say scrubbing at a tough stain that was long gone.
Sun goes silent. He tried to ask Moon if he had told you, but he said he didn’t. He had no idea how you knew. That had been the only thing they agreed upon after the ‘Goldenchild’ argument. Not to tell you about it… “How’d you know…?” Sunny asks, voicing both of their questions.
“Because you two suck at emotions and sharing. It's obvious.” You say scrubbing harder. “You get defensive when I mention Moon, and Moon gets moody when I mention you.”
“AHA HA! Silly starlight! You’re making that up!” Sun nervously lies. He feels Moon internally facepalm making some comment about how bad of a liar he could be.
Y/n gives him a single arched brow. Then you smirk at him. You lean back. Sunny didn’t like where this was going.
“Mr.Sunshinnne~,” you say sickly sweet. “You know lying is against my rules~.”
Sun tensed. Why was that even a rule you had!? Sun had only ever lied to you when it was necessary! Stupid Moon! Always lying to you! This wouldn’t be a problem if Moon-!
“Rule Breaker!”
“ARRGGH NO NO NOOOO! I am not a RULE BREAKER!” Sun screeches over the sound of Moon laughing at him. “Take it back, starlight. Take it back!” He says shoving his face into yours.
“Admit!” You say shoving him back.
“Okay! Fine! I lied! Me and Moon argued! We fought! And still are. BUT I DIDN’T START IT!!” Sun wails.
“I know. Thank you, Mr.Sun.” You hold Sun’s hand and lean closer. “And Mr.Moon?” You say, leaning close and looking into Sun’s now red eye knowing Moon was listening. “I know what you said.”
Moon goes silent. Then a very audible very long, uuugggggghhhh, can be heard from their shared voice box. Sun’s rays retract, his form of blushing. Hush Moon they can hear you!
“You. Two. Need. To. Learn. To. Talk!” You chant in their face. “The higher-ups were already thinking about making some rule changes!”
“What!” They unison. “Tell us more!”
“No! I’ve already been telling you, Señor Luna. You’ll have to wait to find out now.” You cross your arms.
Sun was gonna try to pry more, if only for Moon’s sake, when the door to the daycare opened, and in walked a very exhausted and very frantic DJ’s friend.
“Sorry, Sorry I’m late. Things happened.” They all but sprint to where you and Sun sit on the floor. Y/n stands up as the other handler shoves something small into your hands. Sun tries craning his neck to see.
“Has something happened to Moon since last month?” They ask.
Y/n looks at Sun “See? Told you it was obvious.” Y/n turns back to the other and Sun rolls his eyes with a huff.
“Ya. Twink and Twank got into a bad argument. Why?” Y/n asks.
“Really? He’s not.. out of order or anything??” They ask, baffled. Waving their hands in the air like it meant something.
“No. He’s just fine. Why?” Y/n was starting to sound worried. Sun could feel Moon getting really curious with a dash of concern. He wanted them to just get to the point.
“He’s fine!? Nothing’s wrong!?? Just an argument??” They were starting to get upset.
“Ya… why…?”
“Because Moon’s nightly visits have all but stopped in the past month and it’s making MM’s depression worse!” DJ’s handler shoots Sun a mean glare that was probably meant more for Moon.
Moon starts going off with so many questions before Sun could even think. Sun had a hard time keeping up. So he picked the ones he heard and voiced them for Moon.
“Worse? Are you sure??”
“Yes, I’m sure! Why would-?”
“But they never did anything together. They just talked!” Sun said, trying to listen to both Moon and DJ’s handler while also asking Moon’s questions.
DJ’s handler gives Sun another look.
“Well, obviously it meant more to him than that!”
“But they never did anything??” Sun didn’t really believe it. He had seen some of the games Music Man and Moon played together and he thought-
The lights went out.
DJ’s handler looks over to the switch to where Y/n had snuck off to. “Why’d you-?”
Moon suddenly invades the handler’s space. Getting up close and personal. Y/n had let him out to ask his questions, and by the stars in the sky, he was gonna ask ‘em!
“What do you mean ‘getting worse’!!?? DJ is happy!! Better!! Why would my disappearance make it worse!?? He doesn’t need me…”
DJ’s handler pushes Moon away.
“YES, HE DOES YOU NUMB NUT!! Did you not hear-!??” They take a breath, “Ever since Bonnie’s decommission, you’re the only one here who consistently seeks his company!!” They spit, stabbing Moon with their finger for emphasis.
They look over to Y/n. “Aren’t these guys supposed to be able to read emotions?”
“Ya.”
“It’s different on animatronics!” Moon snaps.
“MALARKEY!!” The handler snaps back.
Moon sets back on his heels, in his signature crouch. Thinking.
“I think you just fixed my problem,” Y/n says. Sun can’t help but agree. They had just pointed out someone to Moon that cared for him deeply that wasn’t himself or Y/n. ‘See I told you people cared!’
Shut up, sun.
“I owe you one.” Y/n was saying.
“Help me kick management into doing something for DJ. Then we’re even.”
“Deal!” Y/n and Moon chorus.
“Oh no! You can do something even better!” DJ’s handler says angrily to Moon.
“What?” Moon asks incredulously.
“You can take your metal backside to the dance floor and apologize for abandoning DJ and not trusting him with your problems like he does! Go on!! SHOO!” The handler demands. Galvanizing Moon into zipping away on his wire by shaking both their hands at him like someone chasing away a pesky bug.
Moon reaches the west arcade first and looks around for DJ.
How could he have been so stupid? So selfish!? Stars above. Wallowing in self pity. Hiding away. Why didn’t he think to talk to DJ? DJ was a fantastic listener. He always seemed to know what to say too…
‘See I told you someone cares!’
“Shut up Sun”
Where is he? How could he hide so well?? Moon was starting to get frustrated now. Hide and seek was his and Sun’s favorite. How could-
“Have you checked that tunnel up there?” DJ’s handler says, interrupting Moon’s thoughts. They point to a pink tunnel near the ceiling.
“No.”
“Be the first place I’d look. His favorite hidey spot when he’s upset.” They say. “Also the hardest place to get up too…” They mumble.
Moon zips away. It was as good a place as any to look. Moon spares a glance at the entirety of the arcade. Maybe DJ was just lying somewhere else.
He wasn’t.
Moon decides to follow the tunnel.
He doesn't have to go very far. He only walks maybe ten feet into the tunnel and is met with DJ’s still head.
His eyes weren’t reflecting the minimal light in the tunnel, that meant he was asleep. Bet handler didn’t know that. Smart know it all.
Moon moves to wake DJ, but he freezes with his hands hovering over DJ’s.
What in the world was he supposed to say?
‘Try saying what the handler said!’ Sun suggests.
Sure. At least it gave him a starting point.
He lightly shakes DJ’s hand.
Dj moves almost immediately. He shifts a set of hands in front of him, keeping his eyes closed, and signs, ‘go away. No talk, please. Too sad..’ before dropping his hands.
Moon had to dance away to avoid being squashed by DJ’s hands, and he just… stands there. DJ was always down for some company. Didn’t matter when or why. He only pushed people away when he was really unhappy…
Moon places his hands back on DJ’s. “I’m sorry…” he whispers.
DJ opens his eyes.
“I’m sorry… that I… abandoned. You. And I, uh-…” Orion’s belt this was hard! What else did the handler say?
“I’m sorry. That I didn’t think to come talk to you, when I was upset…”
Moon bunched DJ’s glove in his hand as he spoke. This was really difficult and it hurt a little, but it also made him feel better in a way. Letting a months worth of emotion out in an apology to his greatest friend.
“I’m sorry.”
DJ shifts around and tries to comfort Moon. ‘It’s ok’ He tries to say, but Moon interrupts him.
“No! It’s not. I should have just come talk to you. You’ve always been a good listener…”
‘Go on then. I’m listening.’
“Got any threes?”
“Go fish.”
“Damn.”
You draw another oversized card. Your cousin, DJ’s handler (you briefly wonder if the twins or DJ knew you two were related), had pulled the world's largest playing cards out of an army bag a few minutes after Moon had gone into the ceiling tunnel. They had offered to play Go Fish with you, and you figured that it would be as good a way as any to pass the time while you waited on Moon. But did it really have to be a game of Go Fish with the world's largest cards? Your hands were starting to hurt from holding them.
“Why are we playing with these cards?” You ask.
“Because neither of us have anything else. Got any queens?”
You groan and hand them your queen. “Freakin mind reader.” You curse. They had been kicking your butt the whole game.
“Hmmm. His ‘bout kings?”
“Go. Fish. Why do you even have these ridiculous cards?” You ask.
“Because MM can use them.”
“Got any sevens?”
“No.”
“You two play cards often?”
“All the time”
You laugh at the thought of them playing a game of cards. Your fellow handler having comically huge cards while DJ would have comically small cards. “What games do you two play?”
Your cousin slightly lowers their cards, thinking for a moment.
“Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Old Maid, War, Phase 10, Skip-bo, tried teaching him Slap Jack. That didn’t go so well. And recently started playing Poker. Disc jockey’s bloody good at it too.” They grumble. “Any twos?”
You stop. “You gamble with Music Man!??”
“Yes”
“And he smokes you at it!?”
“9 times outta 10. Yes.”
“What do you gamble with?? He can’t exactly use money.”
“No. He can’t use money. We bet in favors. If I lose, he gets something from me or plays whatever he wants from my phone. If I win, I get something from him. Do you have any twos?” They ask again.
“No. What do you get from DJ?”
Your cousin draws a card. “Different things. Ride through the tunnels. Free coupons. Right to download his originals.-”
“You have some of Music Man’s originals!?? Isn’t that property of Fazbear Entertainment? Isn’t that illegal!!?”
Your cousin smiles “Not if the creator gambles the right away. Besides, not like I’m selling it. Only for my ears. MM would kill me if he found out I was sharing his sound sketches with others.”
Moon suddenly drops from the ceiling, startling you into dropping your cards. “Gasp. Is DJ’s handler breaking promises!?” Your cousin turns to face Moon, nerves of steel unphased by his sudden appearance. “Sharing what they shouldn’t!? Naughty naughty~”
You see DJ in the background freeze in his descent and stare directly at your cousin.
“No you lousy eavesdropper. I said he’d be mad IF I shared his music, which is only for MY ears.”
They look past Moon to DJ. “Everything better?” They ask.
‘Everything’s better.’ He signs back, still half on the wall. He looks happier to you.
“Good. Cause we still have maintenance that you’ve been avoiding all week.” They start putting away their cards.
You hear a long drawn out sound that sounds like metal scraping on metal. Was DJ groaning?
Moon laughs at his friend’s expense. None of the animatronics seemed to like maintenance.
Your cousin wheels around where they sit and says, “Hey! How are you doing that!?? Are you grinding your innards again!!?”
You could practically hear DJ’s mental cursing as he awkwardly tries to turn around, half way on the floor and wall, and flee back to the hole he had just come from.
“Music Man!! You know that’s bad for you!! GET BACK HERE!!” Your cousin exclaims, throwing down their cards and legging it to where DJ still had a hand on the ground. You hear Moon giggling next to you.
“Maybe we should leave.” You say to him.
“Aawww. But it’s getting good, starlight.” He points your attention back to DJ and your cousin.
DJ was now halfway up the wall and trying to shake his very determined handler off his rear most arm while also trying not to hurt them. They, meanwhile, were very stubbornly holding on and climbing his leg like a pole.
“No. No, we’re leaving.” You say standing and dusting off your pants, “It’s your turn for maintenance. Management finally decided to take you off ‘nap time only’ restrictment, and they want me to do a final once over of your code.” You sigh. Going through their code always took so long.
“I get to play with the kids!?? Like Sun does!!?” Both his red and blue eyes looked equally excited.
Oops. You spoiled the surprise.
(Writers note- feel free to critique, I’m still new to writing and feel like some places are kinda jank.)

Even as a child you had been fascinated by the stories of Liyue, or rather, a specific figure in its history. Perhaps, the archons have heard your passionate nature regarding Liyue, for a fateful meeting one day will change your peaceful life forever.
Tumblr media
Life was everything you could’ve ever wished for.
Only the soft, consistent chopping of a knife against a wooden cutting board and an occasional quiet flip of a page in a book could be heard in one of the many homes in Qingce Village.
Sunlight seeps through the cracks of the window you sat by, casting a bright glow on the words inside the book in your hands, seeming as if the story itself was coming to life.
Well, not that the story wasn’t coming to life, it had already come to life, for you were currently reading about the history of your beloved nation, Liyue.
The book you were so engrossed in was not an unfamiliar story, having already read it a couple times. You would never grow tired of this one.
A smile played on your lips as you approached one of your favorite parts of this specific chapter.
Softly fiddling with the corner of the thin page, your eyes scanned over the familiar words slowly.
Wielding a spear so sharp no blade could even hope to compete against, he emerges from the shadows, illuminating a golden aura around his built figure. In one swift motion, the polearm-wielding fighter sends a rumble through the ground beneath him, ridding of any enemies around him in a flash. A sigh leaves his lips as he removes his hood, examining his surroundings. A long ponytail of golden-brown hair trails down to his waist, flowing softly in the wind. His eyes the same shade, if anything more golden, slowly fluttering shut, head turning upwards, immersing himself in the soft breeze.
You pause and gaze out the window, sighing at the scene of hundreds of miles of tall mountains spread out all around, all thanks to one person. One archon, to be more specific.
About to flip the page once more to continue, you were interrupted by your mother’s voice calling out from the kitchen.
“Y/N, dear, could you fetch me some berries down the river if you aren’t busy?”
You tear your eyes away from the book begrudgingly, calling back, “Fine, anything else?”
“Some sweet flowers and fowl would be great, thanks honey!”
You shut the book, placing it down on your table as you stand up to stretch, bones cracking at the movement.
As much as you wanted nothing but to snuggle back into your chair and immerse yourself back into the story, your parents were the most important people in your life, and you knew it was mainly up to you to take care of them.
Being an only child isn’t as lonely as people make it out to be, you get peace and quiet in the home, and you wouldn’t change it for anything else.
Kicking on your shoes you wore when you ventured outside, you picked up the basket that was used to collect food, as well as your hunting bow for the fowl.
You didn’t know how to fight, having spent your whole life secluded in the village, but you had enough hunting experience, at least.
About to head out, your eyes landed on the book now laying on the table and pondered for a moment, before grabbing it and placing it into the basket.
Despite your mother’s scolding about dangers reading outside, you just wanted a change of scenery while you lose yourself in Liyue’s history.
“I’m heading out now, Ma!” You call out as you push open the wooden door to your home, earning a hum from her in response.
The heat in Liyue would be pretty unbearable to outsiders, however having lived in the same village for almost all your life, it wasn’t anything new.
You hummed, greeting your neighbors occasionally with a wave, walking down to your usual place to fetch ingredients.
Finally reaching your destination not too far from the village, you crouch by the river as you picked the sweet flowers and berries your mother had asked for.
“Mmm, what else did she ask for again?” You thought out loud, forgetting the last ingredient, eyes landing on your bow.
“Oh right, fowl!”
You scan your surroundings, looking for any signs of birds, when suddenly you hear a sharp rustle of a bush behind you.
Not having time to even turn around and investigate, a heavy weight pounced on you from behind, causing you to tumble forward.
You let out a yelp, feeling a pain through your arm that you had landed on, turning around to see the attacker.
Your eyes widened, seeing it had been a hilichurl that was currently standing above you, however, it didn’t feel like a regular hilichurl.
It had black smoke emitting around it, as if some type of curse had been placed on it, enhancing its strength.
The hilichurl spurt out some unintelligible words, before raising its bat and lunging at you once again.
You grab your bow beside you quickly, aiming at its head before completely missing due to your shaking hands.
Cursing under your breath, you pick up a rock and throw it weakly at the creature, causing it to stop only briefly before charging towards you again, seemingly more angered this time.
This was it, you thought. All the time spent not learning how to fight, this must’ve been your punishment.
You shield your face with your arms, hoping to at least lessen the impact, before hearing the hilichurl shout followed by a thud behind you.
Moving your hands away from your head, you turn to see the hilichurl now lying unconscious a few feet away from you.
“Are you hurt anywhere?”
A deep, masculine voice brings you out of your shock, as you turn slowly to meet your savior, instead met by a hand held out in front of you, offering assistance.
Your eyes trailed up to the mysterious man’s face, before your breath caught in your throat.
A long ponytail of golden-brown hair trails down to his waist, flowing softly in the wind.
The man looked back at you curiously, hand still reached out toward you.
His eyes the same shade, if anything more golden.
Why were you suddenly reminded of those words in the book?
Your mouth gapes at the sight of the man above you, his presence bringing a strange feeling you didn’t recognize.
Your eyes widened. Could it be..?
“...excuse me? Are you alright?”
His voice brings you out of your daze once again, a worried look cast upon his handsome features. Wait, what?
It was only then did you realize how good looking the man was before you, turning red as you took his hand and stood up, wobbling a tiny bit.
“Thank you for saving me,” you bow slightly, quickly picking up your forgotten belongings on the ground, still flustered from the incident.
You were about to say goodbye and leave as quick as you could, before your book fell out of your basket and landed on the ground next to the man’s feet.
“Ah—“
The man bent down and picked up the book, about to hand it back to you, when he suddenly stopped and examined the cover.
You swore you could’ve been seeing things, but a small smile grazes his lips as he faces you.
“Are you also interested in the stories of Liyue?”
You stop in your tracks, turning to the man who was now flipping through the pages of the book to the section you had bookmarked prior.
His golden orbs now held an unreadable expression behind them, almost...nostalgic.
You felt a small surge of confidence as your favorite topic was brought up.
“Ah--yes, I am quite informed of the history of Liyue myself,” you smile softly to yourself, causing him to look up and chuckle.
“Is that so?” He hums, tilting his head upwards to face the blue sky, closing his eyes slowly.
...slowly fluttering shut, head turning upwards, immersing himself in the soft breeze.
Your eyes widened at the sight.
There was no way.
But, there was no other explanation for it.
“May I...ask your name?” You ask carefully, awaiting his answer.
He shuts the book with a soft thud, handing it back to you to which you take back happily.
“I go by Zhongli.”
He offers you a smile, making your heart skip a beat and blood to your cheeks, as you stutter back your name in response.
“Be careful around these parts, monsters have been affected by some sort of spell here, making them stronger than usual,” he explains while putting away his spear he had used earlier.
Wielding a spear so sharp no blade could even hope to compete against.
There was no mistaking it.
“Are you perhaps--”
You start to ask, gaining a curious gaze from him, however stopping in your words after realizing how bizarre you’d sound if you’d ask him the question you had been aching to voice since your meeting.
“Nevermind, I should get going,” You shake your head, thanking him once more before starting to walk away.
“If you’d like me to answer your question, meet me back here tomorrow, at the same time.”
Zhongli spoke behind you, making you turn and meet his eyes, which gazed back into yours almost knowingly.
“But you don’t know what my question is,” you question, confusion evident on your features.
He chuckles again, the sound making you melt on the spot.
“Do not underestimate the geo archon.”
With that, he disappears into the other direction, leaving you frozen in your place.
Did he just…?
A million thoughts were coursing through your head at the moment. But one thing was for sure, you couldn’t wait until tomorrow.
--
That night, sleep did not come to you like usual.
With your head filled with thoughts about Zhongli, and his last words before departing, you were basically shaking with excitement.
Had you really met him?
Nevermind, your questions would all be answered the next day.
--
“I see you’ve arrived.”
Zhongli smiles at you, to which you return the gesture, still mesmerized by his delicate features to speak.
You had practically jumped out of bed this morning, making some jumbled excuse about fetching more berries and fowl to your mother, who was left dumbfounded.
Zhongli pats the spot beside him on the grass, and you notice his spear laying next to him on the other side.
Carefully sitting down next to the tall man, both of your backs leaned against the tree with its leaves above you providing minimal cover from the sun. It was then that you noticed the close proximity of your bodies, making you flush.
“So, would you like to ask me your question from yesterday?”
You bit your bottom lip nervously for a moment, before shaking your head and reaching next to you into the bag that you had brought.
“Ah-- before that, Mr. Zhongli, you mentioned you are also interested in Liyue’s stories?” You pulled out the book from yesterday.
He nods, as you flip open the book to the chapter you had bookmarked. The same chapter describing Rex Lapis’s first appearance.
“Just Zhongli is fine. And yes, I am also well-informed of the stories of Liyue. Would you like me to tell you some?”
You nod, showing him the marked section. “That would be nice, but could you answer this one question of mine first?”
He takes the book from your hands, bright pupils scanning over the words. A small breeze blew by just that moment, causing his long hair to lift slightly. The sunlight shone softly on his pale skin, giving him an almost ethereal aura.
You never thought someone could appear so calm and peaceful while reading a book.
“Yes, ask away.”
He lifts his head up to meet your eyes, making you clear your throat, embarrassed you had been admiring him so openly.
Although that chapter remains your favorite chapter of all times, there had been one question that had stayed in the corner of your mind each time you read it.
“In that section, when Rex Lapis lifts his head and immerses himself in the wind, what do you think he was feeling? Satisfaction from eliminating his enemies? Or perhaps, tired from all the fighting in the Archon War?”
Zhongli hums, smiling gently at nothing in particular as he closes his eyes, lifting his head up towards the sky.
A small breeze passes by again, and you smile at the sight. You no longer questioned his true identity. You knew.
“That all may be true, however, I’d say he was feeling quite…” He pauses, as if trying to search for the right word.
“...saddened, almost.”
You tilt your head curiously, “Saddened?”
He nods, facing you, “Perhaps mournful, even. Have you ever wondered if Rex Lapis wanted to kill at all? Although those evil should be eliminated, they are still living souls, and perhaps he wished for everything to return to normal.”
Zhongli’s voice trailed off, as he held a sad feeling behind his eyes, making you unconsciously reach for his hand laying on his lap.
He looked at you in surprise at the sudden contact, and your eyes widened at your own actions, making a move to quickly retrieve your own hand, when he stops you.
He brings the both of your hands together, now laying on his lap as red spreads through your cheeks.
The both of you sit in silence as a few beats pass, when he breaks the silence once again.
“I’d like to share with you some of my favorite stories of Liyue, would you be interested?”
You smile, nodding as he starts speaking again.
And he shares stories you’ve never heard before, or even some that you have, but a different version of. The difference in stories that you had believed your whole life made you surprised, not sure what to believe.
No, scratch that, deep down, you knew what to believe. Or, who to believe.
Zhongli shares his stories until it starts to become dark, to which he finally stops and suggests you return home.
“I’ll walk you home, it’s quite dangerous at night.”
You thank him, and you two start to make your way back, continuing to talk about Liyue and its fascinating history.
“Ah, it’s just right down there. Thank you for today, Zhongli.” You smile at him once again, ready to return before he stops you.
“Are you not going to ask me the question you had yesterday?” It was quite dark, so it was a bit difficult to tell, but you swore there was a slight smirk on his lips.
You laugh, shaking your head. “I’ve got my answer already.”
He raises his eyebrows, a teasing hint in his voice, “Are you sure, Y/N?”
Hearing your name roll off his tongue sent shivers through your body, smirking back at him.
“I’m quite sure, Rex Lapis.”
Zhongli opens his mouth to speak before closing, as deep chuckles ring through the night. Not long after, your own quiet giggles joining him. Finally, you both recover from your laughter.
“Goodnight then, Morax, you still have to share your stories with me tomorrow.”
He smiles at you, golden eyes shining even through the dark. “Same time?”
You grin back, before turning to return back to your home. “Same time.”
Maybe you’d ask him to teach you how to fight tomorrow.
On second thought, perhaps your lack of experience in fighting was a good thing. For because of it, you had met the man who only existed in books that you’d read everyday.
Your once peaceful life, although disrupted by the appearance of the one and only geo archon you admired so dearly, had now offered you something to look forward to each day.

A/N: This was an ask from I believe @creatingstuffinpeace but I accidentally deleted the ask right as I was about to post it. I am going to probably make this into a little series with at least one more part because I have an idea, it's just a matter of when I have time to write it out :)
***
Thunder rumbled outside.
You moved around the bookshop, tidying things up.
“But momma! What about Gunnar?” Your son, Cas, tugged at your skirt.
“He’s probably just outback chasing a cat, love.” You brushed your fingers over his hair momentarily before picking up a small stack of books. “Will you help me with putting these back, Cas?”
He took two of the books from you and began to follow you to the other side of the little store.
“But momma! It’s about to storm! Gunnar doesn’t like storms!”
“Cas–,”
“What if he’s hurt? What if someone’s taken him or something’s happened to him? What if he’s lost!” The more the six-year-old thought about all the things that could have happened to his pup, the more frantic he became.
“Casimir.” You placed the books down on a table and knelt down to his level. You took the books from him and put them aside.
Tears welled in his eyes as he gazed at you. His bottom lip quivered.
You cupped his face and brushed your thumb over his cheek.
“I don’t want to take you out in the storm. But if you promise me to stay upstairs until I return, I will go look for Gunnar.”
“You will?”
You nodded.
“Okay.” He sniffled.
You wiped the tears away and leaned in to kiss his forehead.
“Let’s get these books put away. Then I’ll take you upstairs.”
As you stood up, Cas grabbed four of the books and tried to hurry towards the bookshelf they belonged on.
The front door creaked open and the bell above the door chimed, signaling someone was entering.
You glanced to your son once more before turning to greet the customer.
It was a tall figure with broad shoulders and a hood over his head. Something underneath his cloak moved and out poked Gunnar’s head.
“Gunnar!” Cas squealed in delight, running towards you.
The man put Gunnar down and the pup ran to meet Cas.
“I was just about to go searching for him.” You smiled at the stranger, taking little note of his vibrant golden eyes with catlike pupils.
“I found him clear on the other side of town.” His voice was deep but quiet. He gave a tight smile before turning to leave.
“Have you got a hunt to tend to at the moment, Master Witcher?” You asked, messing nervously with your hands. You hoped you weren’t crossing any boundaries by asking this.
“Not with the storm outside.”
“Would you want to stay for dinner? As a thank you for bringing my son’s dog back?”
The man hesitated to answer.
“I don’t want to impose.”
“It wouldn’t be imposing if I invited you.” You smiled just a little. “The rain seems to be coming down awfully heavy out there. And we’d like the company, wouldn’t we, Cas?”
Cas held Gunnar in his lap but was watching the witcher curiously.
“Yeah.” He answered quietly, a shy smile tugging at his lips.
“Your manners, son.” You lightly chided. The witcher turned back to you.
“Yes.” Your son repeated, this time lifting his head a bit.
“You don’t have to do this, m’lady.” The witcher insisted, his voice quiet and a bit on edge.
You could see with the way the poor lighting caught his face that there was something…. unnatural about his features.
“If you feel uncomfortable with the matter, my apologies.” You murmured softly, smiling. “I just wanted to thank you for your kindness. Not many people would bring the dog back, especially not in such weather.”
The man said nothing.
“Please stay, s-sir.” Cas spoke from behind you, his voice timid. “You brought-brought Gunnar back h-home. Let-Let us thank you.”
The witcher looked past you to your son briefly, before nodding his head.
“I am Y/N. This is my son Casimir.”
“Eskel.”
***
You took Eskel upstairs to your home located above the bookstore.
As you prepared dinner, you made conversation with the witcher. He was very polite and well-spoken, though he remained silent unless you asked him a question.
Your son sat by the hearth, watching Gunnar as he ate his dinner. You happened to be looking at your son when he looked into the kitchen. His eyes were focused on Eskel.
The witcher’s eyes flickered over to Cas, shifting ever so slightly in his seat. Was your son making him uncomfortable?
You moved around the table to place a mug of tea in front of the witcher. Golden eyes found you once more, taking in your every move. He turned his head just slightly away from you as if he was trying to keep his right side from you. But you had already seen the scars, the mangled lines that pulled at his face.
“You’ll have to forgive Casimir.” You lowered your voice so that only Eskel could hear you. “He’s young and just a curious boy. He means no harm, I promise you.”
Eskel’s brows furrowed together just slightly. Had he given you the illusion that something was wrong?
“Cas?” You looked up, smiling as your eyes landed on your boy. He perked up and raised his head. “Is everything alright, love?”
“Yes…. Can I get the book about daddy?”
“Of course, love.”
Cas shot up to his feet and ran to his room. Without finishing all of his food, Gunnar followed the boy.
“Your boy did nothing wrong.” Eskel spoke as you moved away from him. His eyes followed you. “There’s no need for any apologies.”
“But I know how cruel children can be, Master Eskel.” You focused on the pot of soup over the fire, stirring the contents steadily. “They are mean and cold because they are raised to be that way by their parents. They see it in the ones they look up to. They see fathers calling women in the streets filthy slurs and mothers degrading anyone who looks different from them or from their idea of what is normal and what is right….”
You trailed off, only realizing with the silence that followed that you had started to ramble.
You turned your head to Eskel, completely embarrassed that you had let yourself start down that path.
“I’m so sorry, Master Eskel. I didn’t mean to lecture you on my views of society.”
“Don’t apologize.” He shook his head, holding a hand up just slightly. A little smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “What you said is true. Children learn from their parents.”
You nodded, turning to check the bread in the oven.
“Momma, here!” Cas ran into the kitchen. He held a thin book high above his head. Gunnar was on his heels, happily wagging his tail.
“Set the book down on the table, Cas.”
Cas chose to stand at the table directly to Eskel’s right. He placed the book down on the wood and opened it up.
“Tell Master Eskel what the book is about, Casimir.” You took the bread out of the stone oven and placed it on the counter top.
Cas turned his head to look at Eskel but only for a split second. He didn’t want to stare for too long. Staring was rude and Casimir was better than that.
“It’s about the tales of a witcher!”
Eskel read some of the words over Cas’s shoulder, but the six year old seemed to just want to flip through the book.
“Momma?”
“Yes, my love?”
“May I ask Master Eskel a question?”
“He’s right beside you, Casimir. Go right ahead.” You paused what you were doing, placing one hand on your hip as you watched your son.
“Master Eskel?” Cas closed his book and rubbed his fingers over the wording on the front cover.
“Yes?” Eskel looked down at him.
“How many witchers do you know?”
“I suppose a handful. There aren’t too many of us left.”
Cas nodded his head. A furrow formed between his brows. You could tell he was deep in thought.
“Casimir? What else would you like to ask Master Eskel?” You moved towards the table, kneeling down so that you were at your son’s level.
“Do you think he knows the one who knew daddy? The one who gave me this?” Cas tapped on the book.
“Oh, love.” You gave him a sad little smile, brushing your fingers over his hair. “The one who gave you that wasn’t a witcher. It was a man who travels with a witcher. A Witcher’s barker or bard. I don’t think Master Eskel knows him. That happened so far away.”
Cas nodded understandingly.
“May I ask who it was?” Eskel asked almost hesitantly.
Your eyes met his. You weren’t sure if you wanted to keep talking about the matter knowing that it would upset Cas, but Eskel was just curious.
“It happened when we lived in Cintra years ago. The witcher’s name was Geralt.” You explained.
“And we had to move far, far away from home.” Cas nodded his head, taking a deep breath. His voice was sad and made your heart break. “Now we live here.”
“This is home.” You leaned forward to kiss his head.
“I’m going to put my book back.”
You watched him leave the kitchen.
“I do know that witcher.” Eskel spoke. He didn’t want to say anything loud enough for Casimir to hear him. He wasn’t sure if you wanted your son to hear what he was saying. “He’s my brother.”
You opened your mouth to speak but nothing came out at first. You weren’t sure what to say. You were surprised. What was the chance that this witcher sitting here at the table knew your dear friend Geralt?
You pulled out the chair directly across from him and sat down. Your eyes fell to the wedding band on your left hand.
“Geralt was great friends with my husband. Geralt saved him on more than one occasion.” A fond smile came to your lips at the memories. “My husband, rest his soul, could never stay out of trouble in his youth.”
“I’m very sorry for your loss.”
Your eyes flickered up to Eskel, offering him a smile.
“Do you know Geralt’s bard, Jaskier? He wrote stories of Geralt and my husband’s journeys together for our son and had a book created so that Cas would have a book to always remember him by. He clings to it.”
“That was very thoughtful of Jaskier.”
“It was. Brought me to tears for nearly a month afterwards.”
Eskel watched as you tapped your fingers absentmindedly against the table. Your eyes were stuck on the hallway but you weren’t watching the hallway. Your mind was elsewhere. You were absent. He knew that look. The look of someone who had lost someone, a part of them.
Silently, the witcher wondered how long ago your husband had passed. Time never made things better, but it did help to numb the ache of a loss. He had plenty of experience with time and with loss.
“How long has it been since you’ve seen Geralt?”
You blinked and straightened your posture, no longer lost in your mind. The sound of Cas coming back to the kitchen made you remember what was happening, where you were, and what you were supposed to be doing.
You stood to your feet and began to finish the last bits of dinner.
“Um, oh…. I’m not sure…. He, um, I think he came to visit just after….” You trailed off, looking at your son then at Eskel. “Just after it happened.”
Eskel nodded understandingly.
Casimir returned to his seat directly next to Eskel.
“Alright, gentleman. Thank you for your patience tonight.” You placed two bowls down in front of them then turned to get yours.
“Thank you for joining us, Master Eskel.” Cas picked up his spoon and began to eat.
“Thank you for having me.” Eskel smiled, golden eyes flickering over to you.
You met his gaze. Your eyes lingered on him for a few heartbeats before finding your soup.

pov: keeping it casual with Shiggy and Dabi
warning: suggestive / lime af
DISCLAIMER: this doesn't belong to the [Cherry, I run] timeline nor [can the world cease to exist?] timeline. I didn't want to write this pov because I felt like I haven't done enough character analysis on both Shiggy and Dabi to write them in the same pov; but a friend told me if I keep pussyfooting over writing two characters at once, how can I practice versatility in writing?
everyone is in LEGAL AGE in this pov.
if you want me to tag you on any Dabi povs or Shigaraki povs I'll write, let me know
Tumblr media
"You look like you're the life of a party."
Shigaraki takes a side glance at you and a subtle scan to your body. His eyes lighted with curiousity and appreciation with your choice of outfit: a high neck tank top mesh, a dark indigo fitch lace bralette, a black high waisted skirt that hugged your hips nicely and black stilettos.
"And you look like you're going to church." He gave you a smile, turning his whole body to you.
You and Shigaraki were both seated on the bar stools. There were still alot of seats available, not that it was still early, it's just that it isn't midnight yet and clubgoers were only starting to get in. He takes a sip from his drink, tasting the whiskey followed by a hint of sweetness, mixed with herbal, bitter notes.
You giggled. "Amen to that."
It was always nice to meet someone who understands sarcasm, you thought. Your eyes roamed his form appreciatively, his long sleeved shirt fitted him nicely and there was something so charismatic about the man, you couldn't quite put a finger on.
"Sazerac?" He offered, gesturing to his drink. You nodded and he waves the bartender down, buying it for you. "Tell me something, church little miss. Why me?"
"Hmm?" You distractedly watch the bartender prepare your drink.
"You're planning on sleeping with me. Why?" He takes another sip. "We both know interactions like this don't end as innocent."
You demuredly smiled at him, an enticing provocation when you're dressed ready to f–
"I didn't want those guys at the dance floor who grinds themselves all over me. I want someone different, a little intellectual stimulation." You tilt your head and leaned towards him; your lips curled in a secretive smile.  "A little foreplay, ya think?"
A bolt of heat shoots all over Shigaraki. It must be the sazerac. He's gotta admit that your boldness is quite attractive to him.
"You ever had it good?"
You snapped your eyes back to his. He caught you staring at his groin. To be fair, you were curious with his... package."What?" You asked, smiling seductively.
He cocks his head to the bartender.  "The drink. Sazerac."
You flushed, thinking he was talking about sex. Now you're just embarrassed. "Oh, what do you mean?"
Shigaraki leans close to you like how you did earlier. Like sharing a little secret. His breath smells like whiskey, with hints of cherry and spice. A dry sardonic aroma. Dammit, why does the scent turn you on?
He cups your chin with his right hand, the texture of his thumb sleeve brings goosebumps to you. He turns your head to the bartender. "After mixing the sazerac to one of the glass, the other is rinsed with absinthe before finally pouring the drink to it. If the bartender doesn't do that when you order a sazerac,  hop to a different bar."
You watch the bartender do exactly what he just said. You feel his thumb sleeve coyly touching the edge of your bottom lip, slowly following the curve of your chin, down to the curve of your throat, he pressed the spot aligned with your vocal fold that you let out a little gasp, or a squeak. His other hand is grabbing your thigh, preventing your legs from closing to relieve some of the ache.
"Ah-ah-ah." His voice deep but sing-song. "You don't get to close your legs with me here."

Dabi was randomly watching himself blow circles to the ceiling in the smoke room. When he hears the door slide open and you appeared, trying to catch your breath. He took an observation at you and found himself attracted to the way your chest heaved. Not that it wasn't a common sight for him, what with women flocking towards him whichever club he went to. He blew a circle in your direction, meeting your eyes critically. He smiled at the snooty, upturned nose you did and the way you rolled your eyes.
"This is the wrong place to try and catch a breath." He greeted.
"I wasn't trying to catch my breath." You patted your chest, slowly getting your breaths to slow down.
He raised an eyebrow at your reply.
"Yes, I was. But I was trying to run from a creep who wouldn't take no for an answer and you're pretty intimidating, so I was hoping to bum on your presence 'til he's gone." You explained.
Dabi couldn't stop staring at how, despite being seen disheveled just now, you casually primped yourself with a compact mirror. It amused him so since no one really cared what people looked like after spending a few hours at the club, usually everyone would be a hot mess. He found you cute.
"What's in it for me?" He drew a breath from the shisha and blew it again lazily at you.
You eye him critically, pursing your lips. "My wonderful company."
"So I get to take you home?"
"No. My company is only available within the duration of my stay here."
"Pity." With mocking a tone, he smirked at you. "But then again, you seem like you're too vanilla anyways. Can't have sex without being in love with someone?"
Dabi watches how your eyes glinted menacingly, a silent vow to prove him wrong. He anticipates how you crossed the room from the door to him, his heart jumped when your fingers brushed his as you took the pipe from his hand. You took a deep long breath, leaned down and blew sweet, sweet smoke in his mouth. He closed his eyes as the tobacco filled his nostrils, along with your scent. It takes everything in him to just let the smoke trail all over his mouth, and not let his lips press against yours.
" Your many piercings seem like you're overcompensating for something. What, you don't want people to know you're the one who's actually vanilla?"
He opens his eyes and a lazy smirk settles on his lips. He grabs the pipe back and blows the smoke to your mouth just hairsbreadth from you. "Why don't we find out then?"
You feel the way the air moved with his lips. It was so close. It was electric. His eyes daring you to close the distance. You took up his challenge of course.

"Oh, ffuuuck." You awkwardly stand by the door when you find Shigaraki and Dabi glaring at each other in the living room
"Who the fuck is he?" Dabi demanded
Shigaraki only glares at him and then turns towards you.
"Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. Uhmm Dabi meet Shigaraki, my fubu. Shigaraki meet Dabi, my not-serious bf which basically is just another word for fubu." You awkwardly shuffled your feet. "I guess I had too much to drink, I accidentally texted the other and here you are... two... Hahaha..." Kami, you just made a huge awkward mistake. Dammit, you're gonna lose them both.
"Which one of us did you text first?" Shiggy asked.
"Which one does it better?" Dabi asked.
They exchanged glares at their simultaneous questions.
"Um–"
Suddenly, they are both on you; Shiggy cups your face, kissing you angrily, biting your lips til they bleed while Dabi is behind you, cupping your chest as he slowly takes off your clothes. Dabi kisses the spot behind you're neck, nipping your skin 'til there's all but teeth marks on your shoulder blades.
"I'm not stopping–" Both glared at each other for saying things at the same time again.
You moaned when Dabi starts press his hips on you while Shigaraki's hands unbutton your jeans, and finally touching you there.
"We're not stopping–" Dabi's hot breath fanned your right ear.
Shigaraki's low quiet rasp on your left ear. "–not until you know which one of us can do you better."
