Thoughts on “Buffy The Last Vampire Slayer”
Note: This post is not spoiler free, though I don’t dive too much into plot details overall. Also, it is both long and image heavy. These are just my thoughts on the mini, please feel free to add and share your own! Now, on to the post!
I know that the “Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer” comic is non-canon, but I really loved this scene:
Tumblr media
Joyce (Spirit) : “You know what real honor is? Being sought for your wisdom, using your experience to help others. Living out your final years, beloved by the family you’ve built.”
Buffy (Spirit) : “I haven’t done much of that.”
Tumblr media
Joyce (Spirit) : “It’s not too late.”
She says this to Buffy as they look at Buffy’s physical form lying in Spike’s arms. Not only do I like this because it is Joyce showing approval of Buffy and Spike being together, but also because of how it ties back to the idea of family and more specifically, found family. It’s a theme that really starts to become prevalent in the series in the seasons after the high school years. And Spike has always been apart of that family, with him being the core of it here in this short mini.
I’ve only read the first few issues of the Boom!Buffy comics, so I don’t know if this AU here is following that storyline (though, it is obviously not following the world of the TV show and Darkhorse comics). But something that I did notice was that Dawn doesn’t seem to exist in this world.
In the TV show verse, Dawn’s existence forced Buffy into a parental role long before she was ready, with Spike being one of Dawn’s main protectors and caretakers. Now, here we are seeing something similar happening with Willow and Tara’s daughter, Thess. She is, in some ways, placed into a similar position as Dawn - her existence is one that will cause others, bad others, to come after her, and she has sealed magical power. Thess’ is innate magical power while Dawn’s comes from having been the Key, but it’s similar enough.
Tumblr media
Often Dawn is seen as one of the major, key factors that brought Buffy and Spike together in Season 5. She’s a character who constantly connects them. But in this mini we see another possibility where they still hold a connection even without Dawn’s existence. And what a connection it is!
I love how Spike is shown acknowledging that Buffy is older now, different in that respect, but how that doesn’t change his feelings and attraction to her. It’s such an important thing too. Seeing older women being depicted as desirable (without making her character look ridiculously youthful for her age or something of the like):
Tumblr media
Strong and capable:
Tumblr media
And still being good enough and able enough to build a family, regardless of their age or abilities:
Tumblr media
is so incredibly rare in fiction.
While I had some small issues here and there with this mini (mostly with Anya’s “voice” - it sounded like her at times, but other times the writing missed the mark), but everything surrounding Buffy as an individual character here, as well as the bond she is shown to have with Spike here is great.
There were great call backs to things, like Spike’s poetry:
Tumblr media
And I really liked how Buffy herself became “the sun” for a brief moment. It’s something that ties in so well to the themes of fire with the Spuffy relationship. In Season 7, Spike basically becomes the sunrise and obliterates the enemy and whole town.
Tumblr media
Here, Buffy doesn’t do quite the same level of damage, but she becomes the sunrise, just like he did. But here, spike gets to hold her and kiss her (I love how gentle the head kiss here is).
Tumblr media
After all, to him, Buffy will always be a beautiful, glowing existence, whether she becomes the literal sunrise or not.
Bringing this back to the family theme that I started this post off with, I like how we see the characters that existed on the periphery of Buffy’s family (Anya, Tara - who is implied to be alive still in Issue #4, and Spike - for the TV show run) being the key characters to make up Buffy’s new family in this mini. Or, at least, that is the implication I got.
Family and the love, trust, and communication that is supposed to come with it, is something I feel Buffy really struggled with through the whole series. In the TV show and Darkhorse timeline, I feel that Buffy finally worked through all that, and got to a place of comfort and true found family in Season 10.
In this timeline, with this Buffy, I feel that she never got there. So now we are seeing her finally reaching that point. Her actively choosing to live and live as a non-Slayer, but with a family and life that will be decidedly not normal, is really beautiful too, and adds nice closure to Buffy’s constant struggle for “being normal” that we saw TV show! and Darkhorse! Buffy consistently being conflicted about.
As I’ve stated, I know that this a non-canon comic, and that it is short piece that kind of just drops us into this AU, but I like that aspect and think it packed a lot of interesting themes and ideas into just four issues. Unlike Season 12 (Darkhorse), which was also only four issues long, the series doesn’t allow itself to get bogged down by focusing on too many different characters and plotlines, and the plot itself is kept rather simple and teasing (in the “there is more that could be written here, but we are just going to leave the rest up to your imagination).
By keeping the plot self contained, it really allows for a strong focus to be placed on Buffy herself, and to get more of a deep dive into her thoughts, feelings, and mental state of mind/being. Basically, this short mini complements the series very well, even though it takes place in an AU world.
I would absolutely recommend it! Especially if you are a Spuffy fan. Angel is briefly mentioned, but not much time is spent on that relationship or character, and the reason for why that relationship ended up not working out is left unknown (I do have a personal guess, but I won’t post that here, this post is long enough as it is and I feel that would derail things a bit).
Anyway, like I said, I really enjoyed this little mini comic. It’s short, but overall well put together, with a nice look at Buffy as a character herself, and with some great messaging about growing older (especially in regards to a female character).
I’ve been a bit disconnected from the Buffy comics scene for a bit, so I don’t quite know what’s going on in regards to all that anymore. But I would totally be down for more stuff like this. The Buffyverse is one where AUs naturally exist, so having comics that explore different ones is so fascinating to me. There’s so much potential there! (Pun not intended, I mean it, lol).

3 volumes into buffy s8
i've read this season before a few times so i mostly already know what's going to happen. just finished the japan volume and i really do love the comics but the vibe that there's nothing between gay or straight always bugs me. why can't buffy be bi? i can understand sending satsu away because they can't be together, but i'm pretty sure the canon considers her straight even after the thing with satsu and that's what bugs me. like, obviously she's into it, she did it twice. it would make more sense that she just didn't want to use satsu since she has a history of using people who love her (*cough* spike *cough*). although, it's very possible that she is straight, and just into satsu in the moment and knows she can't continue with it in the future because she mostly likes men. i'm like that. but it still feels like bisexuality as an option just isn't acknowledged. i love the writers and so many things, but that has never been one of them. however, the vitriol sent in the "fan" mail after buffy's time with satsu may have influenced that decision. like it's out of character?? really?? after her "slow year" and her history of using people who love her? i??? sounds like yall just a bit homophobic, it's like you don't even remember faith. girl's around no one but chicks for a year and repeatedly makes crushy comments to satsu before the kiss thing. sorry, i digress. those "fan" mails really irritated me. anyway, i also have a crush on satsu lol. she does have "[her] best hair ever" mecha dawn is really silly but reminiscent of buffybot so i can't hate it that much. buffy is a comedy too. who cares. dracula and xander's friendship is super cute and i live for it. my fiance pretty much clocked renee's death the moment it seemed like they were going to get together. oh! and twilight and Buffy finally meet face to face. let me fucking tell you, i remember who twlight is, and when i get to that part of the season, i will absolutely complain. i think most of the bombastic nature of the comics is endearing, but twilight? nooooo I have opinions.

You have to appreciate how, like, all of Buffy's villains become obsessed with her, and a large majority of them want to bring her over to the dark side with them.
And, I mean, this is an obvious thing for the ones who were once her friends or lovers or whatever. But even people like Glory are somewhat on the list--at least for the obsession part and being kind of disappointed when Buffy no longer wanted to go out with Glory's twin/somewhat-counter-part-Ben.

A short Heavensward-era comic about grief and guilt.
Major ⚠️heavensward spoilers⚠️ contained here.
Some notes:
Xel'ia had innate talent as a healer, but no formal training at the time of HW, so on page 2, you can see her trying (and failing) to heal. She also didn't pick up drk until after HW, and mainly did it as a way of coping with her grief and heartache.
The whole thing is inspired by a quote from Buffy (though I ended up changing it a little) and Dragonsong Reprise Ultimate!

Helloooo!
I haven’t read any of the comics, but I saw spuffy were together and then broke up?
hey, sorry for the delayed response, but I wanted to make sure I had enough time to get into this. There will be some spoilers ahead, so if you're okay with that, let's dive in.
The short answer is: yes.
In Seasons 10 and 11, Buffy and Spike had this real, meaningful relationship. They talked about stuff they'd never really gotten into before. It was probably the most honest romantic thing Buffy had going for her. They had their ups and downs, but we see them actively addressing their problems and working through them.
However, Wh*don made them broke up between Seasons 11 and 12. And it didn't seem to have much to do with good storytelling. There were two big reasons behind it:
the anti-feminist notion that a strong woman can't end up in a romantic relationship.
catering to Buffy's fans who didn't support spuffy.
This is how Season 11 ended (it's literally the last page):
Tumblr media
And this is how Season 12 started:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a significant regression in Buffy's character development. She is no longer the girl who's afraid to be in a romantic relationship, especially one where she can be honest and happy. So why make her say things like this?
Tumblr media
when in S10 and 11, Buffy was saying stuff like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Especially the part where she says “we realize we didn’t really work as a couple when nothing’s going wrong” which is not true? Of all Buffy’s relationships, the one with Spike is probably the only one that can work when everything is all right BECAUSE THEY ARE ALSO FRIENDS.
Tumblr media
So yes, Spuffy were together and then broke up because when Joss Wh*don returned as a co-writer in Season 12, Dark Horse told him he only had four issues to conclude the story.
The only good thing is thet left the door wide open for spuffy at the end of s12:

Welcome To The Blog
I have a question -- how many times did Buffy save the world? -- and I will do my best to answer it. Sure, I could probably google it, but what's the fun in that? I'd rather come up with my own way to determine that and analyze one episode at a time. Gives me an excuse to watch the entire show yet again.
Some definitions are necessary before I start. I will be considering only the seven seasons of the TV show BTVS, and maybe the five seasons of ATS, not any other media, not the comics and ABSOLUTELY NOT the movie. I will be fairly narrow in my verdicts of "saving the world," there will have to be clear indication that the threat being faced is "world ending," or "an apocalypse," or "will kill all humans." However, I'm also interested in counting threats that would seriously upset the status quo of the world. With that goal, I'm planning on categorizing each threat as follows:
Apocalypse Now-ish, for end-of-the-world stuff;
It's The End Of The World (As We Know It), for things that would transform the setting of the show in a substantial way, breaking verisimilitude;
Another Day, Another Slay, for things that only threaten life and limb but would have little impact beyond.
These categories are independent of whether the enemy being faced is a Big Bad or a Monster Of The Week, or of whether the particular episode is part of the season arc or filler. Sometimes a Big Bad is just trying to have a good time, and sometimes Monsters Of The Week try to destroy the world. Those are different axes of categorization, in my opinion.
This blog will, by necessity, contain major spoilers for TV shows that ended production about two decades ago. If you are reading this and haven't yet watched Buffy/Angel and wish to do so unspoiled (good for you!), please block this blog. Come back later! If you have already watched the shows and want to check my math, I would be thrilled to have you follow this blog!
Let's get started.

Hi buddy:]
Paul or Spike?
Making you choose between ur vampire boyfriends😈
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
So Paul is hotter imo, but I would have to choose Spike because of how he is canonically
We don’t get toooo much of Paul’s personality, I do love that he’s a silly goofy guy, but Spike is like, super romantic, would die for you, tough on the outside sweet on the inside cutie boy
SPOILERS FOR BTVS
He literally travels the world to get a soul for Buffy, like he realizes that he’s not good enough for her, and he’s like nah I can do better😭😭 he takes all the pain and suffering that comes with having a soul because he loves her so much and wants to be good for her and I-
And then in the series finale he literally sacrifices himself for her and for the greater good, EVEN BELIEVING she doesn’t love him😭😭😭 (and I know he survives and comes back in Angel and the comics, but he thought he was gone for good and he still did it) he’s the man I want fr fr

Honest question, what did you think about the ending of the comics from a spuffy perspective? I know this ask has spoilers for some, sorry!
i like it. i mean, it's not ideal but i like how tender and warm it is and how the possibility of them getting back together in a romantic sense is there. but what matters most to buffy is that they're okay and in each others lives and that's so beautiful to me. i never know what to imagine their "endgame" is since there is that question of him being immortal and she not, so as long as they're in each other lives til the end - whatever that is - i'm happy. it was def lame to randomly break them up after 2 seasons but it could've been way worse!

The AV Club has a review of the fist two episodes of the new season of "Bob's Burgers" (hey, anyone else remember when they did that weekly? No, I'm old? Okay, got it.) I feel compelled to share it, because as a Rudy connoisseur (not a self-proclaimed title, Babs labeled me that!) I am naturally interested in the season's second episode, "The Amazing Rudy."
I'm not going to post any of the article's discussion about it (don't want to expose folks to more spoilers than they may want) but I will post one prediction and one fear I have about this episode.
The prediction: it will make me cry. It sounds like Rudy's parents and their divorce play a pretty central role. One of the reasons I love Rudy so much is that I relate to him in a number of ways, including being a child of divorce. So, I feel like this story could hit some of those nerves for me. Not a bad thing necessarily, but something for me to be aware of.
The fear: maybe it's too Rudy-centric? I know that sounds like a weird thing for someone who's obsessed with the character to say, but the review compares it to Buffy's "The Zeppo" and South Park's "Butter's Very Own Episode" and I don't know if I really want Rudy, or any Bob's supporting character, to get that level of focus. I've always liked that the show tends to keep the focus on the Belchers (well, and Teddy, who is also a main character). I think it's a concern that comes from "The Simpsons". For me, one of the signs of that show's decline was when it started doing episodes that focused entirely on Comic Book Guy or other minor characters where the roles of the actual Simpson family members were really small. Hopefully, this isn't that.
Wow, this is a long post for a link to a review of two episodes I haven't even seen yet! Anyway, tl; dr "The AV Club reviewed Bob's Burgers again; I am way too obsessed with Regular Sized Rudy."

the twilight reveal (my dissertation)
I'm back on the Buffy comics train and just finished the second to last volume of season 8 for the first time since 2020 and here we goooooo (read more so if you want to hurt yourself physically and emotionally with spoilers you can, but you have an out.)
Twilight's mask comes off. I remember this. I don't remember it in detail, but my head instinctively goes into my hands. The trauma. The pain. The cringe. I've never felt so betrayed by Joss until I read the single worst thing he's ever written. and it hurts, just like in 2020. except not i'm reading it with my fiance and it compounds the cringe.
Spike got his SOUL BACK FOR YOU. He died for YOUR CAUSE. And just like when Angel comes back to give her the amulet, it all goes out the window for captain fucking forehead and I'M PISSED. Not to mention the most painful sex I've ever had to witness. Painful in the sense of cringey. Also, is Buffy possessed by Twilight too? Because why in all fuck would she be superpower fucking her ex just because he says "don't you want to be happy?". He's not acting normal at all, and all of this is bombastically weird and makes very little sense and Buffy just does it without questioning it? Let's live in our own microuniverse? WHY?????? Help? Why? Joss what were you going through when you wrote this??? I couldn't have come up with something worse when I was writing fanfiction at 14. I know that's the worst hurdle in the comics but damn. At least there's swearing in the comics, though, I'm not complaining that, it's very realistic.
Okay and why is NO ONE concerned about angel losing his soul??? Everyone knows it's happening and no one asks. Buffy doesn't ask. I'm screaming at the pages for someone to ask bc I'm asking and it makes no sense. the chill days of me defending the writing choices of buffy and satsu and taking mecha dawn in comedy stride are over. what in the absolute fuck. I hate it so much.
so then we get to buffy rejecting this INSANITY finally and that's cool. fuck destiny and all that. there's my girl. my selfishly driven girl (and no, that's not a chracter trait the comics invented, i could write a dissertation on buffy's character flaws from the show, they just seem to be amplified in the comics). dawn is actually the only one who seems to be questioning everything so i'm now team dawn. and xander rejecting buffy. i like xander a lot in the comics.
The best thing about this volume is this:
Tumblr media
But I fear, since it's the end before the last volume, that i will be SO FURIOUS about a lot of things said and done in the issues cooming up, since we will have Spike and Angel and Buffy all in the same room together, and I really hope they don't do to Spike what they did in s5 of Angel which is downplay how great he is to make captain boredom look better in comparison.
and GOD i miss lynch so much. i'm not sure if it's the people writing joss's ideas or writing with joss, because I know lynch wrote after the fall but it was joss's story, so I'm thinking maybe the people writing the comics might have made it worse (even if joss's story BEATS for this was already bad). I at least know whoever storyboarded made a god damn mess of it, because half the time i couldn't figure what was going on based on the drawings in the panels.
ALSO I had this rant in the tags once about how much it bothered me that they took away Spike's black nail polish after he got his soul, genuinely annoying me that something so iconic was ripped from his design. so YAY for the return of the nail polish! Keep it!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also some spoilers under the cut if yall wanna read it urself
in this specific comic- willow is the slayer bc buffy was suffering from being the slayer and willow felt bad for her, so willow tried to absorb buffys slayer memories but she ended up absorbing being the slayer and all the guilt and depression buffy feels with being a slayer. meanwhile buffy is now a normal girl but still working part of the scooby gang, buffy thinks willow has always been the slayer and buffy feels like she is troubling willow bc she cant help her (god the irony). also faith is there which is epic i love faith shes just one of the friends :")
xander is also gay! or bi! he has a boyfriend is what im trying to say! and spike is a caring shoulder for xander to cry on for all the bs xanders boyfriend is putting him through, however there is clear tension between xander and spike theyre absolutely gonna date and i cant fucking wait

They were literally straight bait. So Kit, Livvy and Livvy’s twin brother Ty were a trio with their own side plots in TDA. And well. We literally meet Kit when Ty breaks into his house and puts a knife to his throat and Kit gets distracted by Ty’s eyes. Then later Kit and Livvy have a few moments and kiss once. Then Livvy dies. There are some necromancy shenanigans. Kit confesses his love to Ty then immediately flees the country. Like Kit/Ty was clearly endgame from the start but Livvy and Kit just made out once.
peggy carter and daniel sousa:
She’s the best secret agent, he’s a hot as hell disabled war vet They get together, but also don’t because apparently Steve Rogers is a homewrecker Peggy moved on after losing Steve, got together with the amazing Daniel Sousa, and then got broken up because the Russos didn’t want Steve to be seen as being gay for Bucky
nina zenik and matthias helvar:
[MAJOR SPOILER] If they were truly straight Matthias wouldn’t have died (submitted also stated that nina is canonically bi/pan)
buffy summers and spike:
Buffy's a vampire slayer and Spike's a vampire. Enemies to Lovers. Absolutely not intended by creators, creators treated it like a joke at first, then some of the writers/producers actively hated it even throughout their canon relationship, they don't technically get together in the end, also he dies (kind of. he's brought back in another show. and the comics. it's complicated). Very queercoded relationship despite being m/f - desire, euphoria, shame, slowburn, keeping it a secret, doesn't think anyone else will understand or accept them, wanting to change for the better.
ellie chu and paul munsky:
Classic set-up where they start off as strangers and become really close. He even has a crush on her! straightmod feels it's important to note that ellie is also canonically a lesbian, so there's a bait and switch element to this one

jean-luc picard and beverly crusher:
They have a number of romantic moments throughout the TNG series from arguably the first but DEFINITELY the second episode. but they only get together (briefly before divorcing) in an alternate timeline episode which is also the season finale. Also they have a kid together in Picard but are still not allowed to be together She was married to his best friend and he was in love with her but wouldn’t say anything because he wouldn’t want to damage his bestie’s marriage and then his friend died and they met again years later and shared a lot of romantic and sexual tension for years. He openly admitted (under mind reading) that he had loved her since his bestie was alive but felt he couldn’t act on it. In an alternate future they got married. In the canon future they got together and broke up repeatedly because trauma makes relationships hard sometimes and they have a kid together who is named after the aforementioned bestie. An episode forcing them to share thoughts makes him openly admit that he loves her and has loved her for years even when she was married to his best friend.
tyler rake and nik khan:
They’re very close, have lots of chemistry, but have never been acknowledged in canon. At this point they are just work friends who save each others’ lives on the regular.
keiichi maebara and rena ryugu:
Fluffy harem romcom twists into yandere horror, but then twists again into a story of friendship triumphing over everything. Really holds for any pairing with Keiichi, but the rooftop battle in part 6 is just too good. A recent manga spinoff has them married to total randos, so their respective sons can have the same kind of relationship.
naoko takahashi and shouta oohara:
this “show” is a 2 episode hentai so I can understand if this doesn’t get in the brackets lol (I would not recommend watching this hentai for the sex scenes, I just remember reading about Oohara getting cucked for a girl and thinking that I had to see this) So, it starts off with Takahashi being in love with Oohara and they do have ghost sex in the first part of the episode 1 but what happens is that even though they have the opportunity to be together as ghosts, Takahashi pretty much IMMEDIATELY forgets about Oohara because she becomes completely infatuated with this ghost girl named Sakurako to the point where even when Oohara turns into a tiny penis in episode 2 but Takahashi doesn’t give a fuck
good luck everyone! now go vote!
