Day 4 - Prompt: Glimpse @jegulus-microfic
December Daily Series - 399 words.
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
“Watch out, Black!”
Regulus ducked reflexively and the snowball landed with a splat on the brick wall behind his head. He caught a glimpse of a tan suede jacket before James disappeared behind a corner. Then, another snowball smacked his shoulder hard.
“Sirius!” he chastised.
A bark of laughter led his gaze to the trees lining the pavement a few metres away. His brother was already gathering snow for another attack. So much for his hiding spot.
Regulus crouched low and sought refuge behind the row of boxwood bushes guarding the west side of the inn. More snowballs collided with the wall over his head, drenching him in their shattered remains. He shivered when a particularly icy blast of wind caught the wet flakes melting against his cheek.
“Come on, Reggie! You can’t hide forever.”
“You underestimate the legitimacy of this strategy.”
Sirius huffed a laugh and lodged a snowball at the bush in front of him. “At least throw a few back!”
Regulus eyed the snow at his feet critically. It was solid, sticky snow, perfect for snowballs to be fair. He gathered a handful and packed it into a neat, tightly bound sphere. While Sirius lobbed snowballs all around him, he lined up three more on the ground at the ready.
He peered through the boxwoods to confirm his brother’s position before he lifted up to throw his own as hard as he could. It landed half-way between them with a pathetic whump and fell apart. Regulus sighed heavily as he dropped to his knees.
“Nice try!”
“Shut it.”
Before he could wallow in his failure, a warm body slid in next to him and bumped his shoulder. James put his finger to his lips before he snatched up the next snowball. He whipped his arm back and sent it soaring across the lawn. It smacked hard against Sirius’s chest and knocked him clean off his feet.
Regulus snorted a laugh, then quickly covered his face to muffle it. “Thanks.”
“Anytime,” James said with a grin.
Sirius howled furiously as he regained his feet. “Cheaters! Two on one!”
“Nah, I’m his secret weapon!” James announced.
Regulus quickly packed more snowballs for James as he peppered Sirius with impressive accuracy. He couldn’t help laughing when James caught one of his brother’s snowballs to the face. His warm hazel eyes twinkled behind his white flecked glasses.
Oh. Oh no.

The garden of the Mikaelson mansion was a symphony of colors and textures, a lush tapestry woven from the finest threads of nature. Vibrant blooms cascaded from trellises and arbors, their petals kissed by the golden rays of the setting sun.
The air was alive with the heady scent of jasmine and honeysuckle, mingling with the earthy fragrance of damp soil. As Elijah and I wandered through the garden, I couldn't help but be struck by the beauty that surrounded us. Tall hedges of boxwood formed intricate mazes, their dark green foliage a stark contrast against the blooms that flourished at their feet.
The path beneath our feet was paved with smooth cobblestones, their surface worn by the passage of time. Elijah cut a striking figure against the backdrop of the garden, his tall frame clad in a crisp white shirt and tailored trousers, his hazel eyes sparkled in the fading light. His movements were graceful and measured, each step a testament to his poise and refinement.
Beside him, I felt small and insignificant, a mere mortal in the presence of a god. My own appearance felt inadequate in comparison, my simple dress and worn sneakers a far cry from the elegance of Elijah's attire.
As we walked, Elijah pointed out various artifacts hidden among the foliage, his gestures graceful and fluid. He moved with a quiet confidence, his every movement imbued with a sense of purpose and grace. His voice was smooth and melodic, a soothing balm to my restless soul.
I, on the other hand, felt awkward and clumsy by comparison, my movements hesitant and uncertain. I stumbled over roots and rocks, my eyes darting nervously from one artifact to the next. And yet, despite my ineptitude, Elijah never once made me feel inadequate. Instead, he guided me with patience and kindness, his presence a steady anchor in a sea of uncertainty.
There were statues of ancient gods and goddesses, their faces weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. There were vases and urns adorned with intricate designs, their origins shrouded in mystery. But it was one particular piece that caught my eye, a small figurine nestled in the crook of a tree. It was made of delicate porcelain, its features exquisitely crafted with painstaking detail. I felt a flicker of recognition stir within me as I gazed upon it, a memory hovering just out of reach.
"Do you recognize this piece, Penny?" Elijah asked, his voice gentle as he studied my expression.I nodded slowly, a furrow forming on my brow.
"Yes, I believe so," I replied tentatively. "It's the figurine of Demeter, the ancient Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility." Elijah's eyebrows lifted in surprise, a hint of admiration shining in his eyes.
"Impressive," he remarked, his voice tinged with approval. "Not many people know the name, let alone the story behind it." I smiled modestly, a warm glow of satisfaction blooming in my chest at his praise.
"I've always had a fascination with Greek mythology," I admitted, my voice tinged with excitement. "There's something so captivating about the tales of gods and goddesses, of heroes and villains." Elijah nodded, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.
"Indeed," he agreed, his gaze drifting back to the figurine. "The story behind this piece is quite fascinating. It is said to have been crafted by a master artisan during the height of the Athenian Empire, a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the era."
I listened intently as Elijah recounted the tale of the figurine, his words painting a vivid picture of a time long past. It was as if he had unlocked a door to another world, allowing me to step back in time and experience history in all its glory.
"How do you know all of this?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. "I mean, this piece isn't exactly well-known, and yet you seem to know everything about it." Elijah smiled modestly, a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"I have a bit of a penchant for history," he admitted, his voice tinged with self-deprecation. "I find comfort in the stories of the past, in the forgotten artifacts that tell tales of bygone eras."
I couldn't help but smile at his confession, a warmth blooming in my chest at the thought of sharing this passion with him. It was a side of Elijah that I hadn't seen before.
As Elijah and I continued our leisurely stroll through the garden, we came across a small alcove tucked away beneath the shade of a sprawling oak tree. Nestled within the alcove was a pedestal upon which rested a singular artifact, its presence commanding our attention.
We both stopped in our tracks simultaneously, our eyes widening in recognition as we beheld the artifact before us. Without a word spoken between us, we both uttered the name of the piece at the exact same moment, a synchronicity that sent a shiver down my spine.
"The Forgotten Symphony," we said in unison. A soft smile graced Elijah's lips as he turned to me, a twinkle of curiosity shining in his eyes.
"It seems we share a fondness for this particular piece," he remarked, his voice tinged with intrigue. I nodded eagerly, a warmth spreading through my chest at the realization that we had a shared appreciation for the same piece of art.
"Yes, it's always been one of my favorites," I replied, my voice filled with excitement. "There's something so hauntingly beautiful about it, don't you think?" Elijah's gaze softened as he looked at me, a hint of vulnerability creeping into his expression. For a moment, he seemed lost in thought, as if lost in the depths of my eyes. And then, with a slight stutter, he began to explain the story behind the artifact.
"The Forgotten Symphony," he began, his voice trailing off as he struggled to find the right words. "It's... it's a piece that holds a special place in my heart." I watched him intently, my curiosity piqued by his sudden hesitation.
But before he could continue, I felt a surge of confidence wash over me, a desire to help him in any way that I could. And so, without missing a beat, I picked up where he had left off, recounting the tale of the Forgotten Symphony with passion and fervor.
"It's a piece that tells the story of lost love and longing," I explained, my voice steady and sure. "A symphony left unfinished, a melody that echoes through the ages, reminding us of the power of love and the pain of loss." As I spoke, I could feel Elijah's eyes on me, his gaze softening with each word that fell from my lips. And when I finally finished, there was a moment of silence between us.
And then, with a slight blush staining his cheeks, Elijah turned away, his mysterious demeanor returning in full force. But I could see the hint of a smile playing at the corners of his lips, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between us in that fleeting moment.
"Now I understand why, your professor was so eager for us to meet."

I live in a blue collar suburban neighborhood of small homes constructed in the 1940's. While these homes are short on interior space, they are rich in front and back yards, and in mature flowering shrubs and shade trees.
Kitty corner to my home is a little yellow house where an old disabled man lived. The front yard was screened with boxwood shrubs (no longer appropriate to the climate, removed last year), and to the side, a cluster of ash trees and one mature deciduous magnolia that would explode every spring with massive pink blooms. The entire block looked forward to this tree's blooming.
The house sold two weeks ago. Last week, the new owners CUT DOWN THE MATURE MAGNOLIA TREE AND THE ASH TREES LIKE A BUNCH OF BEAVERS ON METH and replaced them with a six foot privacy fence -- taller than legal to build so close to the sidewalk. In all their frenzy of woodcutting they left the massive invasive tree of heaven behind the house completely untouched.
Now the house is fucking naked.
I don't think they even knew they were cutting down a MATURE DECIDUOUS PINK MAGNOLIA
FUCKING HOUSE-FLIPPERS i bet the're gonna paint the fucker greige and refloor with gray vinyl plank FUCK THEM

A little something (pt.1)
Pairing: Aemond Targaryen x F!reader

*English is my second language. It’s my first time writing something like this. Hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
You hissed quietly when a sharp thorn of a shrub penetrated your fingertip. Several drops of scarlet blood dripped onto the stone sidewalk. For the umpteenth time that day, you attempted to cut away the superfluous branches that overlapped one of the garden's side but frequently used alleys. As usual, you didn't take your work gloves with you, because you thought you didn't need them to pull weeds and trim a few trees.
You worked as a gardener in the royal garden as a substitute for your mother, who had to leave urgently to visit extended family in Winterfell. There was no problem in taking you on as a servant, due to the fact that from a small toddler you learned the properties of some plants under the watchful eye of your parent. Now being 14 springs old, you knew you had a long way to go to master level, however, this did not discourage you.
Your hand, which was bleeding further, clenched into a fist. You remembered that somewhere in the garden grew buttercup herb, which would be enough to relieve the pain. You got up from your knees, shrugged off your worn-out work skirt and headed deeper into the garden. Each time you stayed in the place, you had the feeling that you were getting to know it anew. Every nook and cranny hid something that could capture your attention for hours and almost distract you from the work you were doing.
With a quick step you moved to your now favorite spot - a small pond, around which the boxwood bushes stretched wide. Although they should be densely overgrown, some of them were hollow inside, as if specially hollowed out. You liked these shrubs a lot - there was no way anyone from the trampled path could see you in that place. In addition, under these particular shrubs you often found the herbs you needed for various ointments or infusions.
You gracefully jumped over the water and approached the largest bush. With a healthy hand, you began to scrape away the entrance to your makeshift hiding place, obscured by branches, when you heard a quick intake of air. Startled, you raised your head and your eyes met the lavender irises. You squealed in surprise and jumped back, tumbling over onto the gravel alley. You pressed your injured hand to your chest, your cheeks covered with a blush. You realized that Viserys I's second son Aemond was sitting hunched over in the bushes. He hugged his knees with his hands and scowled even more at the sight of you. You had once seen him in passing as he trained with his brother and cousins in the courtyard, but you didn't expect that you would one day come face to face with him.
You were already about to speak up when you heard a grunt above you. You looked up and saw two servants and Queen Alicent standing over you. "Y-your Highness," you rose from the ground in a flash, hiding your hands behind your back. "Y/N, I see you're not procrastinating on your work" the queen smiled friendly, looking around you " Forgive me for disturbing you, but I'm looking for my son, Aemond" a slight sadness appeared in the queen's eyes as she pronounced her son's name "Haven't you seen him perhaps? Maybe he was here today?"
You were stunned. You would have been most eager to tell the queen that her son was hidden between the branches of the boxwood tree when you remembered his gaze. The gaze of a child who wants to be alone. Lavender eyes glazed over from uncontrollable tears. You couldn't erase that sight from your memory.
"No, Your Grace" you replied, cocking your head from side to side, as if trying to convince yourself "I didn't see the prince today. I rarely see anyone other than servants here in the gardens" Queen Alicent muttered. It seemed to you that she did not believe your words. After a moment, she sighed deeply. "If you see him today," she announced, tossing her chestnut hair behind her back, "tell him that I have been looking for him. And I would like to see him as soon as possible."
"Of course, Your Majesty," you bowed low behind the receding queen. You waited until she was out of sight and dived into the bushes again. This time you only uncovered the branches and looked at the prince with a slight smile. "The queen mother has already moved away, my prince" Big eyes looked at you with slight disbelief "I won't tell anyone that the prince is here. I promise" "You got hurt" the prince's quiet voice sounded in your ears. He was no longer sad, more.... concerned?
"Oh" only now did you notice that the wound on your finger had already healed, but your entire right hand was covered with soil and dried blood. You hid it behind your back, blushing failure "It's nothing like that, my prince. It's just that I'm terribly careless and get hurt quickly," you joked, smiling sincerely. A small smile appeared on the young man's face for the first time. You poked your head out from behind the bushes, checking to see if anyone from the court was hanging around.
"I must get back to my duties, my lord" you replied, glancing at the fair-haired man, who was looking at you with an irreverent gaze, "Stay here as long as you want. No one will find you here." Before the prince had time to react in any way, you rose from your knees and with a jaunty step returned to your former place of work. You did not want to impose your presence on the prince, who needed a moment to himself.
You did not see him again that day. However, the next day you found a pair of gardening gloves with a black dragon engraved on them in the place where you met.

Quote
Yet there was a breathing, pulsing closeness to everything—the soft overgrown foliage behind the rusted iron fence blending in the darkness, and the singing of the cicadas, and the dense shadows beneath the oaks….he looked lovingly and slowly again at the house itself, at its deep doorway, shaped like a giant keyhole….The garden was thickening and closing up in the darkness….He pushed his fingers through the iron webbing, staring at the dust and debris tossed about on the peeling boards of the front porch. The camellias had grown into trees which towered over the railings. And the flagstone path was covered over with leaves….The sweet breeze coming from the river was so luscious and the dark house was right here in front of him, almost close enough for him to touch….The crepe myrtles here had grown enormously. Their pale waxy trunks were now quite tick. And the great stretch of lawn he remembered was sad with weeds now, and the old boxwood was growing wild and unkempt. Nevertheless he loved it. Loved even the old trellis in the back, leaning under its burden of tangled vines. And that’s where the man always stood, he thought, as he made out the faraway crepe myrtle, the one that went high up the wall of the neighboring house.

was Stega “good”? not exactly but I liked reading it !
Demonic, not because of the sin inhabiting it (women in pink furs, men with large hands, small bottles of strong drinks), but because of the way it situated itself in nature, like a piece of meat, a primal cut, something animal and dripping.
There were high-contrast photos in crisp jewel tones. Girls in pearl white aprons, girls eating ruby red apples straight from the tree, girls setting out coral-pink charcuterie on an excursion to a jade-green lake. I knew there were tennis courts, a park, a ballroom. Mountains encircling a swimming pool, endless recreational options.
I turned my face to the sky. The air tasted like iron, and I licked my lips. Everything was iridescent pink, except the lake, which was black and gorgeous. The range gleamed and gleamed and the sky was clear.
We flew forth above the valley. Motor hammering rhythmically, cables crackling. Around us were mountain clefts, insects, thistles.
There was a smell of dust and water and burned hair. All the windows were open.
There was something soiled but sophisticated about her
One might imagine a hotel as a lively place. One might imagine clatter in the kitchen and clinking glasses, the smell of lilies and something metal, a tray set with cups and coffee.
sea lavender and twinpsur, of ore mine and gemstone experts.
Rock crystals and amethysts were lined up on a cloth of dark blue velvet, which gave the lilac stones a ghostly glow. Lavender milk spilled across a night sky.
In a brochure, one could read about how the nuns produced a bright green liquor that tasted of plant and sugar.
the heather and the boxwood. the violets that had sunk toward the earth. We were silent, strode through the forest like tough angels.
I called them the ghost rooms, not because they were haunted, but because rooms unvisited by humans simply begin to attract evil.
clear broth in deep bowls
A black orchid doubled in the mirror behind
Anonymous doors in a long corridor with wall-to-wall carpet and textured wallpaper.
There was the scent of sage, of cold rock.
A spiral staircase ran through the building like a damaged spine.
We dove to the bottom, where various things were floating past the pale blue tile. Metal cutlery, swimming goggles, a green candle. A pair of cotton panties had gotten stuck in the drain.
Alba in a particular light. My eyes gulped it down.

Jade (part 1)
“Jade! Jade! why is he not answering?" The father screamed as he walked through the dim-lit hallway. The mother chased after him as he broke the displayed pieces of art. "What the hell is he doing?! Why isn't he training?" he asked the mother in rage as she stepped in front of Jade's room. "He's reading. Leave him alone. He needs some time for himself." She replied, spreading her arms to block the father from entering. "He's autistic. Can he even read?" "He's autistic, not illiterate." She said before lowering her voice, hoping her son didn't hear them. "Please, john, leave him alone just for today. He's been having a hard time." "So I have to sit and watch as he gets bullied?" "No, he will train with you later, just not today. Have you seen the bruises on his body? He needs to rest." Her expression darkened. The father pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, "Fine… but if he doesn't come to training tomorrow, I'll drag him there." The mother nodded helplessly before knocking on her son's door, "He's gone now, baby. Get some rest. If you get hungry, there's rice and Mongolian beef in the oven. Your dad made it when I told him it's your favourite." Jade was cramped in his closet, reading one of his favourite books. He loved this fictional novel so much as it never got boring, no matter how many times he read it. Time went by, and Jade fell asleep after re-reading it for the third time that day. Feeling a nudge, he woke up to find himself in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by little kids giggling. one of the kids was about to fall on his face as he approached Jade, but Jade caught him and laid him on the grass. He then proceeded to give him a spinner he had in his pocket and said, "That's too dangerous, play with this." The kid looked at the toy in astonishment before running away with his friends. "Those Little kids! Come back here!" A man ran up to the tree jade was resting under, "Are you, okay man?" Jade nodded, the man reached his hand out to help him up, and he took it. As they walked together, Jade realized that the man was not human. He had quartz-like eyes filled with confidence. His blonde, clouds-like hair was tied in a short half-ponytail making his facial features pop. His pointy ears were embedded with tear- like gems. "I haven't seen you around here before. Are you a traveller?" "I think so." Jade answered as he stared at the metal trees pouring some golden syrup into milk-like bottles. The man puts his hands intertwined behind his head before asking you about where Jade comes from. "Earth?" Jade answered, not sure what to say. "Yes, and I come from mars." the man laughed, but he noticed Jade wasn't laughing. "Wait, seriously? You better not be kidding me!" The man dragged Jade away from the place they were heading to and proceeded to move toward a clear purple lake in the forest. Barely any sunlight reached the lake. Fluffy clouds and three moons were visible in the water, surrounded by glowing tree branches and weird-looking fruits. "Jump!" "What? No. I don't even know you." Jade took a step back. "I'm Lanor Boxwood. Nice to meet you. Now jump." Lanor commanded.
Jade stared at Lanor, stunned as the realization struck him, "I'm inside the book." but before he could say a word, Lanor pushed him into the lake and jumped after him. "Run!" he dragged Jade toward a hut made of tree branches inside a cave. Lanor locked the door and then asked Jade to follow him. He led him to a cafe-styled living room and started preparing some glowing blue coffee beans. "Iced or hot?" "Iced, please." Lanor took two coffee cups from the freezer, then continued to make the coffee in silence, and soon the smell of freshly made filled the place. He took a glass cup and drizzled it with white mocha-like sauce. Then poured the golden milk from the trees into it and finally added the shots of coffee. Lanor gave Jade the cup of butterfly blue coffee and sat down while sipping his hot shot. They sat there in silence for a while until Jade yawned. "You just drank coffee. How are you sleepy?" "Coffee makes me sleepy." "Here, sugar should do the opposite. We'll be staying until tomorrow." He pointed at a room in the corner and then said, "You can sleep there and no matter what you hear, never open the door unless I say Aulerenth." Jade nodded, then headed to the metal-doored room. The room was cosy, the walls covered in flowers and branches. Each flower had an icy gem-like core. Their petals were sturdy but softer than silk. The bed was comfy, the blanket was warm, and the only light in the room came from the flowers' disks. Jade heard knocking noises, and screams filled the room after them in seconds. "Let us in. Please, let us in. Help us." The screams got louder and harsher with every minute. Jade closed his eyes, scared of making a sound. He held onto his puzzle piece necklace, playing with the part that spins to calm himself down. A while later, Jade remembered he had his sound-cancelling headphones in his backpack. He put them on, and soon after, he fell asleep from the effects of the caffeine. In the morning, Lanor knocked on Jade's room, but Jade didn't open it no matter how loud Lanor screamed "Aulerenth.". Lanor kicked down the door just to find Jade still asleep. He woke Jade up, instructed him to wear shoes, and walked away. Jade did as Lanor instructed then went to the living room, Lenor wore his jacket and shoved a sandwitch in Jade's hand. "Name." "Huh?" "What's your name?" "Jade." "Listen to me Jade," Lenor grabbed Jade's shoulder, continuing in a warning tone, "If anyone asks about your name, where you're from, or any personal information don't answer them." "Why?" "I don't have time to explain but trust me. Also, hide the necklace." "You're my favourite character in the book, I trust you with my life." Jade thought, but he didn't say anything other than the word "Okay." while nodding. Jade followed Lenor and went through the back door. The sky had fluffy clouds and three moons shining in different colours, the same ones he saw inside the lake, but now the moons looked closer to each other like they'd merge sometime soon.
Lenor looked at the sky before cursing, then moved faster, "We don't have much time left. We need to get you to Akataya as fast as possible."

Various Plants For Patio Privacy
In certain towns, the lawn of one home is straightforwardly close to the yard of another. In others, the occupant of the home behind the yard can see straightforwardly into the area. Either circumstance doesn't give a homeowner any kind of detachment from others. Involving plants for porch protection is an extraordinary click here to learn more method for getting a feeling of individual space without burning through a large number of dollars on fencing.
Assuming ground space is at a higher cost than normal, have a go at utilizing planting boxes and huge containers as opposed to doing bed planting. Little trees, bamboo, elaborate grasses, or tall bushes can be planted in enormous containers. Planting boxes can be moored to a lattice and are ideal for plants like ivy, Virginia creeper, climbing hydrangea, or clematis. The plant chose ought not be excessively obtrusive and ought to be helpful for light going through to the area. Virburnum and lilacs are plants that develop tall yet require little upkeep and they each have appealing, fragrant smelling blossoms.
A support is another other option, however be mindful so as not to choose one that becomes excessively high or requires steady upkeep. Arborvitae and juniper give protection and don't need ordinary managing. They are both appropriate for full sun and all around depleted soil conditions and give an appealing expansion to the yard.
The individuals who want something with a lower stature ought to investigate bushes like the bantam burning shrubbery or boxwood. Bush or fence roses and spirea are other appealing choices that incorporate excellent blossoms. These normally two or three feet high and needn't bother with a great deal of upkeep to flourish. Birds and bugs will be drawn to these, so remember that while deciding how near plant them to a seating region.
Anything the decision, select just those things that fill well in the pertinent environment zone of the country. A few plantings won't fill well in specific environments, making them be inadequate at giving a screen or, at times, bringing about their fast passing. Check on the web or ask at a nearby garden store if uncertain of what plantings are fitting for the area.
Regardless of which plants for deck protection are chosen, they ought not be deciduous. This quality will permit them to give security during the entire months of the year. There are numerous choices to give screening from neighbors, including huge containers, lattices with garden boxes, fences, and bushes. Homeowners ought to buy just plantings that will flourish in the sun, soil conditions and developing zone of the area.

Princess and Knight AU - Marichat
Day 8 of @marichatmay. This fic is available here on AO3.
Prompt: Princess and Knight Lady and Samurai AU
Summary: In feudal Japan, Ladybug and Chat Noir are samurai, sworn to protect Lady Kagami. Neither of them know each other’s true identity: servants Marinette and Adrien. One night, Lady Kagami’s castle is ambushed by Hawkmoth’s army. Caught off guard, Marinette wakes to Chat Noir saving her. Now, they just have to save Kagami.
Marinette woke to a scream and the crackle of flames. She rose quickly, covering her nose with her arm to fend off the smoke. Her eyes blinked through the haze of sleep, focusing on the wooden walls around her.
“Marinette!”
She heard him through the thin door. Marinette scrambled to her feet and shoved her weight against the sliding wood. “Chat Noir!” she half yelled, half coughed. As her senses returned to her, she could hear the cries of soldiers outside the castle walls.
“Stand back, Marinette!” She obeyed, and in moments, Chat Noir burst through the door. As always, he wore his scaled black armor and cat mask. One of his hands rested on the sword at his hip, the other extended towards Marinette. “We have to go, now!”
“What’s happening?” Marinette gasped, taking his hand. He led her into the hallway, the smoke hanging like a thick fog in the air, illuminated by flames. They passed empty rooms with belongings scattered inside. Occasionally, she could make out a servant running at the ends of the halls.
“It’s Hawkmoth,” Chat Noir said through gritted teeth. “His army ambushed us in the middle of the night.”
Unable to keep up with his fast pace, Marinette stumbled. Chat Noir stopped in his tracks. “You’re too slow; get on my back.”
Marinette no sooner linked her arms around his neck when Chat Noir broke into a run. She squeezed her eyes shut against the fumes. “Where’s Lady Kagami?”
“The tower. That’s where we’re going now,” he called back to her.
Ahead of them, part of the wall collapsed, revealing the trees just outside the castle walls. Marinette caught a glimpse of Hawkmoth’s army through the leaves. The swordsmen swarmed like flies while the archers nocked their arrows. Chat Noir sprinted past the gaping hole, and Marinette heard the thud of arrows sinking into the wood where they had stood only a second before.
“I can’t find Ladybug,” Chat Noir continued, leaping over fiery debris. “She must be with Lady Kagami.” His voice dropped as he muttered, “She must be…”
Marinette felt a flood of guilt. Chat Noir had no idea that she was Ladybug, his fellow samurai. He was wasting time defending her when they were supposed to be protecting Lady Kagami. She cursed herself for her failure, for sleeping through the attack.
“What about Adrien?” Marinette asked. They turned a corner and the tower came into view.
“He escaped with the servants,” Chat Noir said dismissively. He bolted for the stairs, taking them two or three at a time. Marinette was too on edge to be impressed by his stamina.
They ascended into the highest room of the tower. Arrows were lodged into the walls, small bursts of fire beginning to consume the wood. The room was empty except for Lady Kagami, sitting slumped with her back against an ornate dragon tapestry. An arrow bloomed from her shoulder, a splotch of red spreading on the fabric beneath her simple plated armor. To the unknown, she could have been any average soldier. She looked up at them as they entered, a thin trail of blood leaking from her mouth.
“Lady Kagami!” Chat Noir and Marinette said in one voice. In a breath, they were on either side of her. Marinette began to tear at her own clothes to bandage the wound, but Kagami waved her hand.
“Thank you… Chat Noir… for bringing her to me…” Kagami’s voice, usually even and stoic, had a shakiness to it.
“Of course, my lady,” he said. “Please, we must leave before the castle burns down.”
Marinette added, “We have to get you help! Your wound-”
“It’s too late...” Kagami breathed raggedly. “For me… Marinette.” She lifted her hand, still stained with blood, and placed it on Marinette’s shoulder. “Listen to me. I need you to do something.”
“Anything, my lady,” Marinette said, covering Kagami’s wrist with her hand.
“Hawkmoth can never know... that I died…”
A pained gasp left Marinette’s lips. “My lady, no!”
“Shh…” Kagami shifted, the act eliciting a wince. “You and I are… close enough in age…” Kagami removed a wrapped pouch from under her armor. “Here is some money… And the crest of my family…”
Chat Noir’s eyes widened. “What are you saying, my lady?”
“Marinette,” Kagami murmured, holding Marinette’s gaze. “You must take my place. You must pretend to be me… Gather my mother’s forces… And avenge me… Promise me that you will do this.”
Tears flowed freely down Marinette’s cheeks. “But-”
“Promise me.”
Marinette locked her jaw while the rest of her body trembled. “I… I promise.”
“Good.” Kagami turned to Chat Noir. “I have not seen Ladybug since the attack began. I… I fear the worst for her... However, if you do find her, know that you are both sworn to Marinette now. You must protect her.”
Chat Noir stared at Kagami. “My lady…”
“Protect her.” Kagami leaned back, grunting against the pain. “That is my last request of you both.”
A wooden beam creaked angrily above them. Kagami grimaced. “You must leave now. Before the castle...”
“No, we… we can’t.” Marinette took her hand in hers, brushing her tear-stained cheek across Kagami’s knuckles.
Kagami smiled at her, a rare expression. Her last word was not the order of a lady, but the request of a friend. “Go,” she said softly.
***
The violet dawn mingled with the distant orange of the burning castle. The building itself was hidden behind rows of forested hills, the sun beginning to creep into view in the horizon. For the entire night, Marinette had wondered if the sun would even rise today. It seemed bold of the rest of the world to move on, as if her own had not collapsed in flame.
She stood with Chat Noir at her side. In the meadow behind them, their black horse grazed, finally allowed to rest after the night’s frantic escape.
“Marin- I mean, my lady?”
Marinette glanced at Chat Noir.
“I…” He lowered himself to his knees, bowing before her. “I want you to know that I’ll never let anything happen to you. As Lady Kagami ordered, I pledge to keep you safe and to never tell anyone our secret. Please know that-”
“Stop.”
He jolted as Marinette collapsed in front of him, her head in her hands. “Stop,” she repeated, shoulders shaking. “Not yet. I’m not… ready.”
Chat Noir stared at her. “My lady?”
“Don’t!” Marinette yelled. “I’m not her, I… How am I supposed to do this? Any of this. I’m just a peasant girl from nowhere, how can I live up to her?” She shuddered, tears flowing down her face. “And now listen to me, I sound so selfish…”
“You’re not,” he said quietly. He reached out a hand to comfort her, then decided against it. “Please, stop crying, Marinette.”
She froze, her breath hitching. “Say it again.”
“Please?”
“No,” she said, lifting her head to meet his eyes. “My name. Say my name.”
His expression softened. “Marinette.”
She sniffled a few times, then lunged at him. Her arms linked around him in an embrace as she wept into the black armor. He stayed still for a moment, then surrendered into her touch, holding her close. Tears sprang to his eyes. “Shh, it’s okay, Marinette.”
“It’s not though,” she said between sobs. “She’s gone. Our lady… our friend is...”
They stayed in each other’s arms for a long moment. Neither want to speak the truth, as if putting it off was still possible. Marinette whispered against his shoulder, “I know… I know I have to do this. But what if I can’t, Chat?”
“You can.” He pulled back and cupped her jaw with his gloved hand. “You know why?”
She shook her head.
“Because I’ll be right by your side. I’ll protect you, Marinette. Lady or not, I swear myself to you.”
Marinette searched his green eyes. Something about them seemed so familiar. She took a deep, shaky breath. “We need to return to that stream. The one at the bottom of this hill.”
“Of course,” he said, helping her to her feet.
Marinette knelt in front of the flowing water, staring at her ever changing reflection. Her hair looked exactly like Kagami’s, black with a cobalt tint, except that Marinette’s hair was longer. Their face shapes were similar, and they even shared a light dusting of freckles. The most noticeable difference was their eyes; Kagami’s were a deep amber, while Marinette’s were blue.
Marinette held the pouch in her hands, the one that Kagami had given her. She slowly untied the strings, frowning at the assortment of belongings: a coin pouch, a dragon pattern sash, a decorative boxwood comb, and a dagger. Marinette held up the last one, frowning at the intricate design of the hilt.
She pulled her hair to the side, holding the blade at the place where Kagami’s hair had ended. Marinette inhaled deeply, then sliced through her locks with a quick cut. She watched as her discarded hair landed in the stream, flowing away and catching on the rocks.
Marinette stood, turning to Chat Noir. She straightened her spine, mimicking Kagami’s perfect posture. She lifted her chin, and said in a stern tone, “Let’s keep moving.”
Chat Noir bowed to her. “As you wish, my lady.”

so i never do this but i put a lot of thought into really specific details about the structure and scene layout of (the three-part folding mirror) and i really really really want to talk about it so here are some of my notes and some general commentary
-the crux of the fic, at least the way i had envisioned it, is what vfd does to family, how it becomes biological family vs the family created by vfd
-what vfd did to specific families: -physically separated the calibans -morally separated the denouements and the snickets -somehow brought the anwhistles closer together
-in terms of ramona and olaf, ramona was there to stress the distinction of biological family vs. vfd family but also how they’re so inextricably intertwined with each other, and olaf, this is harder to tell bc he doesn’t have a point of view here, but olaf is scoping out potential candidates for his personal group of firestarters – his own sort of “family” (ramona bc she’s a duchess, ernest because he has a similar line of thought, josephine because her husband is working with the mushrooms, the white-faced women because, well they wind up in his troupe and I have very vague headcanons about how that happens)
-related; the reason frank asks olivia about miranda at the end is because, at that point in the fic, frank feels so terrible about what he said to ernest that he’s trying to reassure himself that his family is still okay because (dewey’s right) at least they’re together, compared to the calibans, who haven’t seen each other in years. it was one of the first ideas I had when I was jotting ideas down in april and it stuck with me the whole way through. I really wanted it in there. I went back and forth before I got to this plot, though, on whether or not frank or ernest would be the one asking it. but I think it fits frank. -(ahahahahahaha the kicker being that miranda really was at the party the whole time and olivia didn’t recognize her) -anyway
-the parallels in the fic were: -the denouements start the fic together, and end the fic alone (by being honest about how they feel about each other) -the snickets start the fic relatively separated, and end the fic together (by being dishonest about what happened during the party) -the denouements start the fic by playing their game, and the snickets end the fic with theirs -frank is mistaken for ernest, ernest is mistaken for frank -frank pretends to be ernest on accident, ernest pretends to be frank on purpose -dewey has never slammed a door in his life; towards the end of the fic he slams the tray -i….think that’s all of them. I think
-character-wise, jacques and frank both see themselves as the people holding their families together; when in fact for the denouements, it’s dewey, which I think is clear in this, and for the snickets it’s lemony, which is less clear here? but definitely something I agree with -dewey and kit see themselves as the most ‘normal’, and they both have relatively solitary positions of acquiring information -ernest and lemony clearly both vibe on a ‘question vfd’ wavelength -i was also interested in kit and ernest, as siblings who feel stifled by an older/perceived older sibling, and dewey and lemony, who are sometimes unnecessarily protected by their siblings because they are the youngest/perceived youngest -this doesn’t show up in the fic bc olaf’s parents are still alive, but I thought ramona and olaf were also interesting foils re: reacting to their parent’s deaths
-some narration notes: -frank never refers to ernest and dewey as his brothers, except in the scene where he argues with ernest. because frank doesn’t necessarily see the split of biological family vs vfd family but has definitely swayed more to vfd family -ernest and dewey always refer to each other as brothers. -similarly, frank refers to the members of vfd as associates, most everyone else refers to them as friends. -ernest refers to vfd as strictly VFD because he’s distanced himself from it, while everyone else calls it ‘the organization’ -frank doesn’t swear even in his narration when he’s thinking them and not saying them because it’s, still his narration. he still wouldn’t quite completely say the words. (oh, he’s like gansey, like that. the raven cycle is still on my brain. i had so many scene sketches where ernest and frank were way too callous to each other bc they kept coming out like ronan and declan.)  -kit’s line at the beginning is “someone in this very room has betrayed us” which is jacques’s line from the building committee meeting in unauto. the clock saying wrong afterwards is because the someone who really betrayed them (lemony) isn’t in the room.
-the costumes, which i did decide very arbitrarily: monty: clearly a snake. olaf: sigh. wolf ramona and olivia: oh, there was actually a slight distinction that just no one notices because none of them have looked at an insect (and also because describing clothes properly but succinctly is the hardest thing. i've written fic for a long time!!!!! i did my time in block paragraph clothing description hell!!! it haunts me!!!!!!!!!!), but ramona was the butterfly and olivia was actually a dragonfly. their masks are roses because, well 1) I thought that would be cool 2) butterflies and dragonflies land on flowers…. jacques: the boxwood, but a lion otherwise. josephine: ocean widdershins: the octopus with the pirate hat jacquelyn: the gold star suit (because gustav said she should do it for a play on. star. like. actress star.) miranda: uranus’s moon named miranda. it was very vague and I put that in the fic before I decided to have her in the little scene with esme. and then i thought i would put her in that scene too. gustav: phantom of the opera.  haruki: tree frog hector: tree (not because of haruki’s costume but because i literally could not think of a damn thing for hector to be) lemony: uhhhhhh I had vague ideas he was. a cloud or something. like a stormcloud???? couldn’t pan out though. I like him in grey anyway. kit: I really just wanted her in red. with a big cape. and i spent so much time mentally deciding if i wanted her to have glasses or not in the archives that i forgot to mention her mask. everyone has one i swear to god  white faced women: did anyone recognize that was them? :) it’s not mentioned in any way at all but in my head they were all dressed identically as flappers
esme actually doesn’t have one, because I, forgot, to give her one. I’m taking suggestions.
-references to lyeekha’s fics: -“that which is essential is invisible to the eye” is what frank says to jacques at the end of edge, and also the title of their snicket/denouement series  -it initially wasn’t in there, because I was worried it wasn’t, like, in the right tone, re: what happens in edge vs how I was interpreting jacques and frank? but i liked it a lot. so i put it back in.  -“frank quit smoking, but you didn’t” is a reference to frank smoking at the end of rigged  -guess the guest and the clock alcove are from the end of fragments, with dewey and ernest watching hotel guests. this is my favorite thing in the whole world and something i actually keep forgetting is not canon because it is SUCH the perfect beethoven parallel  -kit’s tattoo, which I was specifically imagining as the giant bombinating beast tattoo from ink on her back, which is definitely not around her neck but that was the only spot of skin she was showing so it was available and my thought was, it was kind of a low-cut in the back dress, and she was wearing the cape to cover up the giant tattoo on her back because beatrice was not there to cover it up with makeup (also bea picked out the dress.) (bea: if I can’t be there you have to make a statement) (kit: I have to what) -lemony being a “powerful, mythical figure” to the sugar bowl gen was actually something I wrote a long time ago, back in 2013, and I put it in the fic because I thought it fit, and then happened to reread double edged VERY late into the rewriting, literally THE DAY after I wrote that line in, and i saw a similar line of thought, and I was like “*cooper voice* sometimes you just get lucky ~ ” -jacques being in a lion costume, from the masquerade outfit sketches
additionally – -yes I am still cackling about ‘angel of my apple’ -angel of my apple -ANGEL OF MY APPLE  -writing olaf is constantly like, he can say the funniest fucking things. and then turn around and say the absolute cruelest shit and the balance can be difficult.  -but, angel of my a p p l e
-i can’t believe that out of all the people here, frank and jacques are the ones having the most semi-successful romantic relationship. well, ramona and olivia, too, but frank and jacques actually kiss so good for them -i know it was very vague and it’s because writing romance is physically embarrassing, but yes that last line was supposed to be them kissing, i’m so sorry
-undercover underwater was a last-minute addition because I didn’t want to take the time to try and google something real and good because I didn’t have the time. my guilty pleasure is super shitty hallmark murder mystery movies (I like good murder mysteries as well, thank you.) and my mom’s been reading terrible murder mysteries during lunch (where I was sitting across from her, also eating lunch, but also hiding behind my laptop and writing the fic) so I just came up with undercover underwater on the spot, but my mom came up with the tagline. it was originally ‘sleeps with the fishes’ (especially because i love the godfather movies which also, clearly has a very big stress on family vs The Family) but I thought ‘diving for the truth’ was funnier. -my mom and my brother (who has no interest in shitty murder mysteries, but loves to verbally smack them down with me re: their predictable tropes) and I decided that the plotline was something like, single woman scuba dives and keeps running into stuff (you know, hidden treasure, dead bodies, the like); her love interest drives the boat; her overbearing family member is an aunt; this is definitely like, book four in the series. there’s probably twelve books or something. (she goes on vacation on like book six and still finds a dead body, come on it practically writes itself.) (she probably owns a little fish tank......it’s a small sunny beach town.........etc etc.........) (it’s so easy to do this.)  -oh, fixer upper is the worst hallmark murder mystery series, murder she baked is the best. in my opinion.
-dewey and lemony were supposed to have an actual conversation at the hors d’oeuvres table but every time I tried to put lemony in earlier he just wouldn’t work. it didn’t feel right. so he got saved for the reveal. -but i’m still delighted by the idea of lemony literally doing the shot of gazpacho.  -dewey uses a spoon because he doesn’t have the composure or the guts to do a shot of cold soup  -lemony was also supposed to have a scene with kit and one with jacques, i’m pretty sure, to lead up to the gazpacho conversation and the commiserating re: siblings. but again, didn’t work out. so then dewey had to fare alone in the scene. -oh!! the line about how lemony hides, in the least likely places, was actually something that was in my initial write of lemony’s scrapped pov of my ellington fic. jacques being responsible for sending olivia to the hinterlands was from a scrapped jacques fic.  -steal from your unused fic.
-because I had to take scenes with lemony out, I had some, gaps in the night that I had to fill in (especially because this is a party more people are there than the snickets and the denouements), so that was how esme, the herpetology squad, and olaf and josephine came to be. (also olaf needed to show up again somewhere else otherwise he kind of, disappeared awkwardly, I thought?) -also because initially there was going to be a scene of bea and bertrand, elsewhere, but I wanted to keep the fic contained to the hotel, because one of the ideas I wasn’t able to put into the fic all that much was the sense of the hotel being its own world -oh, bea and bertrand don’t know that lemony used them as cover. the assignment they were working on instead of being at the party? planning the opera. the scene would’ve come right after ramona and olaf’s conversation. -the herpetology squad not only serves to highlight that people can’t tell the denouements apart (part of the foreshadowing that ernest would pretend to be frank), but was also me roasting myself because writing like a million different characters I had never written like this before had me very concerned about if their characterization was consistent, specifically for kit. (specifically, her with dewey.) also defining a character down to one base trait can be helpful when writing and creating characters, but for people no it’s not ideal. -haruki’s estimation of the denouement’s traits were not how i was mentally keeping track of them, because i definitely do do the ‘one base trait’ sometimes, but i had a lot more going on when i was thinking of them -but yes dewey is kind. in the way that bertrand is kind, but bertrand’s like, way more smooth about it.
-lemony does not have his own pov because, for me personally, I can’t fathom writing him in any other way besides first person, and it just would not do to have one scene out of the whole fic not in third person. unless he was secretly narrating each scene, which, he clearly was not. i would’ve had to do it in a whole different style.
-i love that dewey and kit are like ‘ahaha we’re the normal ones though’ and their normal conversation is them literally going ‘hey these creepy fish are AWESOME THOUGH’ -i looked at so many fish. for hours.  -ALL BECAUSE I came up with the phrase ‘oceanic intrigue’ as a fun phrase and decided I had to commit my soul to it and never look back. -oh, the fairy shrimp are really very cute though. and i think the cookiecutter shark is, fucked up but a neat little guy.
-i’m eternally going to be laughing about this too  kit: where the fuck is frank frank: /three floors down, making out with jacques
-oh!! 40-49 is unassigned in the dewey decimal system (which I googled. many, many times.), and was previously biographies. there’s another section for biographies now, but because biography was the closest I could come to like, some sort of, identity category, I thought it was more fitting if it was the section that used to be biography but was now as blank as frank felt.
-dewey is the one responsible for the clock sounding like it does. he just thinks ‘wrong’ is a fun word. that, and frank recognizing jacques by sound, were from my earlier scene sketches for this when i thought this fic was going to be much, much shorter.

Safe Aviary Plants and Toxic Plants for Birds@|what plants can i put in an outdoor aviary@|@|24
Tumblr media
Plants not only add aesthetic value to an otherwise sterile-looking enclosure, but they also provide a more natural, engaging, and secure environment for the inhabitants to enjoy. Using plants to create visual barriers within the flight may help reduce aggression among cagemates by providing objects for the birds to hide behind.5 This in turn helps to make the birds feel more secure, and may therefore result in reduced stress levels. Foliage in the cage gives the birds something to occupy themselves with–birds often chew on, play within, and even build nests out of plants placed in their living space.
For this reason, care must be taken when selecting plants to decorate a flight. Both live and fake plants may be used, but all parts of the plant must be safe and nontoxic. The best fake plants to use are constructed of untreated silk and plastic. Make sure the silk plants do not have any components that may be easy for a bird to consume, tangle itself in, get caught on, or stuck by. Treated wood baskets and paper plants may be hazardous choices and are not recommended for decorating flights. Two benefits of using silk plants are: 1) they are not as easily destroyed by the birds, and 2) they can be scrubbed clean and disinfected as needed.
[external_link_head]
Live plants tend to demand more upkeep and may need to be replaced more frequently, as finches often love to pick them apart. Try to obtain plants that have not been sprayed with any pesticides or chemicals, and be sure to rinse the plants off before placing them in and around the flight. Do not add any fertilizers to the soil (they are toxic);6 if fertilizers are already present in the soil, repot the plant with uncontaminated soil. Leaving each plant in its pot is suggested, in case a plant dies and needs to be removed.
Helpful Hints41
Placement Plantings should be spaced appropriately to allow room for flight paths and to permit the birds to access to the floor of the enclosure. Walk-in enclosures should also have planned pathways for birdkeeper access. Be careful to provide climbing vines with trellis to support the weight of their growth; otherwise they could break the aviary mesh and allow escape of the birds.
Selection Aside from ensuring that the plant(s) you have selected are non-toxic, try to avoid purchasing plants which are tall and rapidly-growing as these will require constant pruning. In addition to considering what plants are best suited for your area, don’t forget to also consider the needs of the birds. Avadavats and Munias enjoy climbing small bamboos and grasses, for example, Munias and Mannikins prefer to weave their nests into grass clumps, and Weavers need palm leaves and broad-leafed grasses for nesting material.
Timing of Live Plantings Plants should be added to the enclosure as it is being completed. The plants should be allowed to grow sufficiently before adding the birds; this way, the plants will be better able to withstand being nibbled on. Ideally plants should produce their densest foliage while the birds are nesting.
Safe Aviary Plants25,17
When choosing plants for your aviary, consult a botanist or experienced gardener who can help you select plants which are suitable for planting in your locale (considering your hardiness zone, soil type, sun exposure, etc.). Below are some options which have been listed as safe for birds.

Toxic Plants
Plant toxicosis in birds occurs if they chew on or ingest toxic plants. The toxic reaction can be due to pesticide residues on the plants, or to toxins within the plants themselves. Birds which chew on toxic plants may develop oral irritation; if they ingest enough, systemic clinical signs can occur such as vomiting or diarrhea. There is likely significant species differences in sensitivity,16 and studies are lacking. However, plants which have been reported as toxic in some birds, or which are considered to be potentially toxic include:6,25,52,29,56,16,17,28

Avian Plant Toxicology Research
Studies of plant toxicity in finch species are greatly lacking, however a few studies were done using canaries. Unfortunately, because great variation exists among species, it is not safe to assume that plants which are non-toxic to canaries are equally safe to other birds and vice versa.
[external_link offset=2]
AUTHOR(S): Arai, M.; Stauber, E.; Shropshire, C. M. TITLE: Evaluation of selected plants for their toxic effects on canaries. YEAR: 1992 CITATION: J Am Vet Med Assoc, 200(9), +61404532026
ABSTRACT: Leaves or fruit from 14 plants considered to be toxic to pet birds were administered by gavage to 15 pairs of canaries (Serinus canaria). Each bird was given 0.12 to 0.70 g of plant material. One pair served as a control and was given distilled water. The plant materials were flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen, pulverized, and resuspended in deionized water for administration. Of the plants tested, 5 (
oleander, lupine, foxglove, yew leaves, and dieffenbachia) were considered highly toxic and were associated with acute death of birds. The remaining plant samples (clematis, Hoya carnosa, privet Ligustrum vulgare, parsley Petrosilium sativum, cherry Prunus sp., Pyracantha coccinia, rhododendron, black locust Robinia pseudoacacia, and wisteria) caused no, or only transient, clinical illness.
AUTHOR(S): Hargis, A. M.; Stauber, E.; Casteel, S.; Eitner, D. TITLE: Avocado (Persea americana) intoxication in caged birds. YEAR: 1989 CITATION: J Am Vet Med Assoc, 194(1), 64-66
ABSTRACT: Following two incidents in which a pet canary and three pet cockatiels died under conditions suggesting ingestion of avocado as cause of death, an experimental study was undertaken. Avocados of two cultivars were mashed and administered via feeding cannula to 8 canaries and 8 budgerigars. Two control budgerigars were given water via feeding cannula. Six budgerigars and 1 canary died within 24 to 47 hours after the first administration of avocado.
Tumblr media
Deaths were associated with administration of both avocado cultivars. Higher dose was associated with greater mortality. The 2 budgerigars given water were normal throughout the observation period. It is concluded that avocados are highly toxic to budgerigars and less toxic to canaries. PM findings observed in some birds included subcutaneous oedema in the pectoral area and hydropericardium.
The following study was done using just budgies:
AUTHOR(S): Shropshire, C. M.; Stauber, E.; Arai, A. TITLE: Evaluation of selected plants for acute toxicosis in budgerigars. YEAR: 1992 CITATION: J Am Vet Med Assoc, 200(7), 936-939
ABSTRACT: Pairs of budgerigars were given samples, by gavage, of plants considered potentially toxic to pet birds. Samples were prepared by flash-freezing and powdering fresh plant material in liquid nitrogen and resuspending the material in deionized water for administration. Of the 19 plants tested, only 6 induced clinical signs of illness; these plants included
yew, oleander, clematis, avocado, black locust, and Virginia creeper (Taxus media, Nerium oleander, Clematis sp, Persea americana, Robinia pseudoacacia, Parthenocissus quinquefolio).
The other plants tested in this study were: bleeding heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis), privet (Ligustrum sp.), honeysuckle (Lonicera sp.), lupine (Lupinus sp.), cherry (Prunus sp.), pyracantha (Pyracantha coccinea), boxwood (Buxus sp.), dumbcane (Dieffenbachia seguine), foxglove (Digitalis sp.), spindle bush (Euonymus alatus), poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherima), rhododendron (Rhododendron sp.), and blue elderberry (Sambucus cerulea).
Note how some plants which appear well tolerated by budgies (lupine, dieffenbachia, foxglove) prove fatal to canaries, while some plants which canaries appear to tolerate (clematis, black locust) make budgies quite ill. Until more research is done, it is important to err on the side of caution and avoid any plant which may potentially be toxic. [external_footer]

If it’s one thing Bucky hates, it’s diplomacy. Ironic, considering he’s currently neck-deep in a manifesto his father had dropped into his lap a week ago. Ironic still, considering he’s a bloody prince. Not a prince who prances around in jewels or silks, but a prince nonetheless - a prince with responsibilities and a duty to his country when the throne eventually comes to him.
It’s a mantra he’s heard his entire life, and it’s a mantra he’d really love to stop hearing before he takes a screwdriver to his eardrums.
He knows it’s unfair, knows he’s got it better than most, and he respects that - kind of. While he wants for nothing, he feels trapped, imprisoned by duty, regality, and nobility. Bowing under the weight of his future, the eventuality that he’ll be a king. He’ll need to command and rule and say goodbye to his freedom - however much of it he has.
He’s already damn tired of it.
And that’s why his unofficial-official bodyguard Sam finds him open-mouthed and snoring behind his desk in his office. The older man isn’t surprised by it really. Having been with the Royal Family for close to ten years now, he knows Bucky’s mannerisms, habits, quirks, and annoyances better than most, and while he wishes Bucky would grow up a little, he isn’t quite so strict as his Queen Mother over his behavior.
Sam purses his lips, rolls his eyes a bit, before he creeps to the desk. Reaches for the massive manifesto that sits open in front of Bucky, snaps it closed, the dark-skinned man’s gaze flits between the two for a few moments.
A little humming under his breath, he lifts the binder over his head above the desk, lets it drop with a loud slam that wakes Bucky with a jolt and a girlish yelp. He flies backwards and his weight shifting tips the chair. Trinkets and knick-knacks rattle as he and the chair hit the floor. Sam waits patiently, tipping a snowglobe on the shelf beside him, while Bucky splutters and curses him out.
“The hell was that for, Wilson?” he grouses, rubbing the back of his head where it hit the floor.
“Your mother is requesting you,” Sam responds with a pointed look, setting the snowglobe down.
Bucky feels himself scowl before he can stop it. He loves his mother, he does, but he knows what she’s going to speak to him about - it’s the same thing she always wants to talk to him about.
“Do I have to?” He knows he sounds like a petulant child, he knows, but if he’s honest, he’d rather play Baby Shark on repeat for the rest of his life than listen to his mother prattle on and on about how it’s time for him to find a wife. A suitable one, one of noble birth. One who’s proper and polite and graceful.
Bucky wants something different.
He admits he hasn’t thought much about marrying (clearly) or even falling in love, but as he gets older, grows closer to becoming a king and taking on more responsibility, the prospect of finding someone to share that with occasionally crosses his mind. He has no doubt his mother would find someone who’ll make him happy, but the idea of having his bride chosen for him, the risk of being trapped in a forced marriage, doesn’t sit well with him at all.
Sam gives him an exasperated look. Nodding sagely, he sighs and straightens his shirt, slightly wrinkled thanks to Sam. Following the older man out, he prepares himself for the conversation he’s heard a thousand times before.
She’s relentless, he decides, and he finally figures out where his stubbornness came from. She’s organizing a gala in his honor, a presentation of him as an eligible bachelor, and she’s taken the liberty of inviting every eligible heiress, princess, and everyone in between in a massive effort to get him to connect with someone.
She’s frustrated with him when he voices as much, voice growing higher with her irritation. “James Buchanan, it is your responsibility to marry. You’re nearly thirty, and you’ve yet to choose a wife! You’re not getting any younger and should you choose not to marry, your reign will be forfeited!”
Ah yes, the little wrench in the system. A decision made by the country’s parliament as a failsafe in case Bucky clutched his bachelor lifestyle to the vest. Clearly they hadn’t had much fail in him to marry and rule successfully, and a small part of him wants to shove their faces in it.
But only if it’s on his terms.
“Sounds like a dream to me,” he mutters back, just loud enough for his mother to hear him. She screeches, kind of like a hawk - or a banshee - and Bucky feels a little bad. But only a little. Gesticulating wildly, he exclaims, “What? Would it really be so bad if we just gave the crown to parliament? I’m sure Pierce would be happy to take it. After all, can’t have a thirty-year-old playboy bachelor ruling alone, can we? Bad for his family’s image, isn’t it?”
She opens her mouth to retort, offense written clearly on her face, but Bucky sweeps from the office before she can utter another word. Sam is waiting for him outside the door, and he straightens, tries to act like he hadn’t been eavesdropping on the loud exchange.
“Let’s go Sam,” Bucky orders, “I need to get out of here for a while.”
Sam doesn’t hesitate - he calls for a car and fetches Bucky’s winter coat. “Yes, sir.”

You resist the urge to slam the phone down into the cradle, opting instead to gently place it back where it belongs. But you do give it the middle finger as you scribble out the order you’d gotten halfway through before the customer decided she didn’t want to spend fifty dollars plus delivery on a floral arrangement.
Tossing the paper in the trash, you walk around the counter to straighten out the displays of vases, each holding stems of various flowers. Casting a glance out the window, you sigh at the people who walk right by your shop, despite the inviting fairy lights, the floral displays and boxwood trees in the windows, and soft Christmas music playing from the speaker system.
It’s a month until Christmas, and your orders are down - again. You’re not sure why, but there’s been a steady decline in sales for the past six months. Dejectedly, you chalk it up to people losing interest in sending flowers to people, with the exception of funeral arrangements if only because people die every day. In New York, it’s unheard of that people can’t afford flowers - most can. They just don’t send them. The classic gesture is being swept under the rug in favor of material things - new electronics, vacations, jewelry.
It saddens your heart to think it, but it’s true, and if sales don’t pick up, you’ll be forced to sell the building you left everything behind to buy. Tail tucked between your legs, you’ll plant yourself behind a desk for the next foreseeable future, working overtime to pay off the expenses from the flower shop.
Misty-eyed, you sniffle and clean the stamens from the stems of stargazer lilies. A little unusual to carry them this time of year, but they’d been a special request from someone who’d never showed to pick them up. Usually it’s easy to lose yourself in the pretty colors and scents of flowers, but now, you can’t even be bothered to make new arrangements for fear they’ll go to waste - then it’s more money down the drain.
Instead, you clean the shop from top to bottom, rearrange the displays, open the door despite the chilling air and display a boxwood tree - handmade - out in front. A couple slow in front of the shop, eyeing the boxwood tree. The woman smiles, pointing happily to it, remarks about bringing it for Christmas dinner.
To your joy, the husband agrees and they step inside to order one with red and gold decorations. It’s a steep sale - $100 plus tax - but it’s not quite enough to cover your rent for the month just yet. A few more boxwood tree sales and you’ll be covered. Surprisingly, you catch the woman taking a photo of the boxwood tree outside as the husband places the order.
“I’m going to send this to Sue! I’m sure she’ll love one for her house!”
You smile gratefully, hoping like hell this Sue woman indeed places the order with you. The couple waves pleasantly, offering their names - Jack and Michaela - and then they take their leave. A few more people trickle in, place orders for both Christmas and for Thanksgiving centerpieces, and you take a couple of phone calls - one to actually order, one for general information. It turns into a fairly successful afternoon, and as you get ready to close, you feel a little hope blooming in your chest.
Hope that you might not lose your dream.

Outside on the busy streets, Bucky is blown away. He’d insisted on getting far, far away from the royal house despite Sam’s initial reluctance. Bucky was a prince, a known prince, and both paparazzi and people could be unpredictable. Not to mention, he’s sure there would be people willing to hurt Bucky, ransom him or something to make money off his family - okay, Sam knows that particular scenario might be a stretch, but it’s what he’d been trained for.
Bucky’s like a kid in a candy store, weaving in and out of the crowd, ducking into this store and that, experiencing regular city life like he never got to. It had always been schedules and propriety and rigidness that he’s relishing a bit in the freedom to just be. He buys Sam a new winter coat, one that blends in a bit better with the public, and he settles on a peacoat, scarf, and paperboy hat for himself. He feels...normal, and on the street, no one recognizes him.
As he strolls down the sidewalk in the fading light, he catches a glimpse of fairy lights across the street. A woman stands outside the door, beige coat and burgundy hat in place. When Bucky crosses the street, he realizes she’s staring at the building, which he now notes is a florist shop. There’s a longing in her gaze, a shininess that suggests she might be on the verge of tears.
There’s a pull deep inside him, compelling him towards her. It’s like she’s pulled him into her orbit, and Bucky doesn’t think he’s ever had this kind of reaction to a woman before. He doesn’t even know her and yet he desperately wants to, needs to know her. He’s entranced by the look on her face, an expression of sheer yearning paired with sadness trapped within it. He wants to kiss it away, and his reaction should startle him.
But it doesn’t. It only forces that tug to pull harder, and he takes a few steps forward. Before Bucky can approach her, he’s swept up in a crowd and loses sight of her. When he steps out of the throng, he searches for the woman, but she’s gone.

Congrats on the trivia win! can I ask what question did you miss a point on? I keep getting targeted ads for schitt's creek trivia & I know they'll tragically never come to my town...but I always wonder about what level of questions they'd ask. I feel like I'd be pretty impressed if they managed to actually trip you up on something!
ugh it was so dumb that i missed it lol. they played the clip from “moira vs town council” where moira says “okay, picture all of you living in a cave, having never seen the outside world, and then i show up. no, this is not what i'm trying to say. [what are you trying to say?] that we should strive for something that sets us apart from the prison baby.” and they asked what the next word was. in my head i could hear her saying “we need greenery!” but i was like, they wouldn’t ask for the next word if the word was just we. but i knew she also said “flowers! boxwood trees!” so i thought maybe i just got them out of order and it’s that first and then “we need greenery,” so we went with flowers as our answer. and instead what she actually says is “greenery! we need greenery! flowers! boxwood trees!”
i am of course kicking myself for missing it lolol. the questions for this one generally ranged from really easy (what does the town council name after moira? whose first date involved mozzarella sticks?) to fairly trivial (how many signatures does johnny get on his town council nomination form? what’s the name of the jazzagal who has the solo in “it’s raining men”?). i thought it def skewed toward the easier side--and second place was only 5 points behind us, so they clearly didn’t struggle much either--but last place was 55 points behind us, so i guess it really depends lol.
on the bright side, i at least didn’t have to argue with them about any answers for this one. the first one i went to had Several wrong answers, and i’ve heard that others have had similar experiences at some of the ones they’ve been to as well. so really the quality and difficulty of the questions can def vary.
