jackson fuller || fellow travelers headcanon based || 18 || homosexual
peyton ryder || 50 || aceromantic || the colony outlaw || living in a colony in post apocalyptic new york where the colonists live in a community that's run by the capitol where experiments are done on the innocent, peyton keeps to himself after becoming an experiment himself. had it not been for the experiment malfunctioning and disfiguring him, peyton might have become a zombie like creature known as a nomad who appears human before becoming a bloodthirsty creature by night. with his daughter supposedly dead after being taken captive by the capitol when she was only a child and nothing else left to lose, he has been known as an outlaw of sorts who prefers to keep to himself while making a living no matter what the cost might be to survive where things, just like the world, had gone to hell. || fc: walton goggins
bernard beaumont || age unknown / turned at 36 || homosexual || born in 1830, bernard is the older brother to megan whom he was always protective over, doing his best to do what he could to make sure she had a good upbringing until she was married off to a man named tobias which caused him to be separated from her for years. it was during this time that he tried to find her while making a living for himself. it wasn't until he left for america that he was reunited with her and upon meeting draco, the vampire whom she had fallen for, bernard met his untimely demise when he was killed when draco thought he was there to kidnap megan. it was thanks to megan insisting that he be turned that bernard was given a second life as a vampire which he hated from the start. years of him feeling tired of living as a vampire and wishing he died when he was supposed to be led bernard to be reckless and not give much concern about his well being. preferring to look out for others he gets close to while he's not drinking himself into a drunken haze to forget all he experienced during his second life. || fc: luke brandon field
scott thatcher || 40 || bisexual || the killer artist || growing up with a serial killer as a father gave scott an unconventional childhood that no one should ever experience at any age, but while scott never saw what his father was capable of, he didn't have the best home life as his father was barely around and his mother never had much interest in being a mother. drugs and alcohol were normally seen around the house and over time, it became evident that scott would grow up to be a killer himself. at the same time he found a passion for art and after school, he made a career as a painter while giving into his dark desires on the side, using art as a cover to hide what he really did behind his charming smile and personality to match. || fc: dan stevens
issac thompson || 25 || pansexual || the paranormal vlogger || unlike his siblings who took on more conventional routes in life, issac found a passion for all things paranormal and supernatural, devoting his life to documenting his ventures to haunted houses and whatever else he thinks can make for a good video. even conducting interviews that he thinks will gain him more views. something he hopes will bring him some success in his otherwise mediocre life that involves him working a job when he's not doing videos since he never got a reasonable inheritance from his late father, richard thompson who was a politician until his demise. feeling like he has to prove something to his older siblings who are all more successful than him, issac works hard at what he does and doesn't let anyone keep him from hopefully achieving his goals. || fc: tom holland
anna || age unknown / turned at 12 || the feral vampire || anna is the undead daughter of stefan who was thought to be dead for hundreds of years after she was believed to have met her untimely demise at the age of fourteen. in reality she was found by a vampire after her parents seemed to abandon her and they took pity on her, turning her into a vampire despite her young age. it soon became evident just how feral she was and how she couldn't be tamed.
eventually she killed her sire and took on the facade of a helpless child until she was adopted by a nice family with whom she lived until their death which left anna completely alone again. this made her unwilling to form any bonds with humans that she would only outlive, but her need for family keeps her looking for someone that can give her the family she always wanted. || fc: alisha weir
aiden campbell || 300+ years old || closeted homosexual || the mind reading vampire || aiden is a mysterious vampire whose human life has never been disclosed aside from him being a father to young rosalind with his wife, elizabeth for several years. their quiet life being broken when rosalind was stolen away in the night and aiden's wife suffered with tuberculosis which ended her life and almost took his as well. while she succumbed to the illness, aiden was saved by a man named stefan who lured the younger man in with the promise of love and a happier life than the one he lost.
believing his lies led aiden to being turned and becoming the fledgling to stefan whose love was only a way to get aiden on his good side. centuries of staying by his sire's side finally came to an end when aiden was able to escape the pain he endured at the hands of the older vampire. finding a better life for himself that kept him in the darkness of nighttime while drawing as little attention to himself as possible. not wanting to relive the trauma of his past that is forever etched on his skin with scars. || fc: assad zaman
stefan || age unknown / physically 35 || panesxual || the ancient vampire || while his origin is unknown and lost to the world, stefan once lived in france during the 1800s where he met a young woman with whom he had a daughter, making the child half vampire and it seemed like the charming man had everything going for him as he was considered wealthy and his natural talent for any job he had made it easy for stefan to be successful while hiding the fact that he was a vampire. though when his daughter and wife died, causing stefan to lose any bit of humanity left within him and he became less of a vampire and more of a monster that no longer cared who he killed as he had nothing left to live for.
that was until he met aiden whom he soon fell for and together they started a relationship that seemed to be going well for years, ultimately leading to stefan turning aiden with the promise that they'd have a new life together as lovers. unfortunately this was all manipulation and soon his treatment of his fledgling turned abusive until aiden finally managed to break free. with the old stefan now completely gone, he was free to continue to cause bloodshed wherever he went, reining hell on a world that he long since stopped caring about. || fc: sam reid
bowie || 25 || genderfluid / they them || homosexual || the bartender || bowie is a young bartender living in washington where they reside in the city while working at a local bar to try and make some kind of living for themself while hoping to someday get away from the place they've known for so long and find a way to become something bigger elsewhere. while society hates their choice to dress feminine, bowie continues to be themself despite the homophobia and hate they receive as a result. knowing that if no one accepts them for who they are, then they will accept who they are. though they do hope to find someone who won't be like the others who want them to live up to society's standards. || fc: evan mock
leonardo 'lee' turner || 35 || closeted homosexual || the state official || lee is a charming man working in washington as a state official during the 1950's, making a name for himself while being the man that all the women want to be with. what they don't know is the secret that lee keeps from the world after an incident during his younger years forced the once confident lee to bury himself into the closet.
fearing that he'd once again be rejected or worse for his interest in men. preferring to just hook up with men that he'd meet whom he knew wouldn't talk about sleeping with him, lee did his best to keep from getting attached to someone until he met the senator's assistant and writer, james richardson. what started as an affair in the midst of a changing world turned into something that would end up changing him over the course of several decades where he learns to move on from his trauma and become a better man. || fc: matt bomer
ian thompson || 35 || closeted homosexual || the wayward ceo || thought to be the eldest son of richard thompson, a powerful ceo, ian had a responsibility from a young age to take care of his younger siblings, sky and wilbur. it was while growing up that he endured abuse from his father with no help from his absent mother who let it all take place. resulting in ian developing ptsd, trust issues and some scarring on his face from past incidents. along with a drug issue that he still has today despite being the successful ceo of a business company. it was after richard died that he discovered the existence of siblings he didn't realize he had when part of the inheritance he, sky and issac were supposed to get. thus causing ian's life to change as he started to look for the rest of his family and try to move on from what happened to him as a kid. || fc: jeremy strong
emanuel 'manny' kingsley || 33 - 60 || homosexual || the political assistant || coming from a humble childhood with his adopted parents who gave manny a family when his parents died before he had a chance to fully remember them, the young boy learned life lessons that made him the perfect candidate for the assistant of senator antown thompson. someone whom the closeted manny fell for without being able to admit such a thing until the two began a secretive affair that began a life of complicated love, breakups, reunions and heartaches.
it was as he started working for antown that he grew curious about the world of politics which only made him want to pursue something greater. this only led to him being involved in a scandal that ended up tarnishing his reputation and he had no choice but to leave something he knew so well, thus living a quieter life that took him from washington to london. somewhere he felt more at peace while finding a new path for himself.
something that only worked for so long before he was diagnosed with stage three leukemia. taking away any dreams he had for the future, manny put his life on hold while focusing on his treatments that eventually led to him being cancer free. though even with his time spent going back to life again, he was once again sick years later and it was this new illness that told him he couldn't just put life on hold since there was no guarantee that he'd get better or have another chance to beat something that was only slowly killing him a little each day. || fc: jonathan bailey ( verses: x )
wyclef || 1000 + / physically 35 || homosexual ( closeted ) || the traveling elder || being among the top ranked elders in the fae realm due to his knowledge of more magic than others have been able to master, wyclef found himself tasked with great responsibilities shortly after finishing his training. starting as a mentor until he was twenty, he soon aspired to be an elder who'd put his ability to travel through time to good use which eventually would lead him to go from the realm he calls home to other realms & time periods to right what has been wronged & help any fae he may come across along the way. || fc: jonathan bailey
aslan, prince of the fae || age unknown, physically 25 || pansexual || the runaway fae || born the eldest son to the royal family of the fae world that he knows to be home, aslan was given responsibilities at a young age when all he wanted to do was explore the other realms & put his powers to good use. all of which contain the use of magic to manipulative the world around him in different ways, he found himself tempted to experience all that he could of his abilities by leaving the world that he knew so well. finding himself in the unfamiliar world of mortals where it soon became clear that aslan was not like those around him. hiding the fact that he is immortal & possesses more powers than he can easily control on his own, he makes sure to make the most of the freedom he always craved so much. || fc: nicholas galitzine
nicolas shaffrer || 25 || bisexual || the politic's son || being the adopted son of olivia shaffer whose leak of the thompsons' personal information, nicolas found himself in the mess of a scandal that he had no part in. always preferring to avoid the world of politics that he was brought into when adopted as a child, he preferred just to live his own life while going to school & finding ways to pretend he's not someone that seems to always be watched because of his mother being so well known. his outgoing nature becoming more introverted over time as he wanted to keep his own scandal from occurring, a feeling that only intensified during the events of the scandal that made him distance himself from his mother even more as he resented her decision to do what she did to people whom nicolas had long since started to respect. || fc: taylor zakhar perez
draco || age unknown / turned at 25 || pansexual || the vampire with a heart || having always been one to charm those he felt an attraction to before being turned when on the brink of death, draco would become notorious with other vampires he'd meet for believing that a vampire could ever love when they are are meant to be bloodthirsty killers. it was something he soon learned to use as a way to lure unsuspecting men & women to use them as a way to feed or turn into vampires when the urges grew too strong to ignore. with half of his memory gone from the early years of his life as a vampire, he's been unable to recall times spent with others he met after being turned. one of whom being another vampire named tobias whom he'd reunite with to learn about his broken past & relearn the bond they once had. || fc: timothee chalamet

Cryptid Mythos bonus! Everything that appears on this sheet is an entity reported by real people. Why no Mythos this time? Because these encounters are so strange in appearance or behavior that they could slip right into the Sothic multiverse with little to no alteration or alternative explanation. Good luck Investigators!
All Colours Sam In 1973, in the town of Sandown, 7 year old “Fay” and an unnamed friend encountered a very strange individual as they explored the fringes of a golf course. They first became aware of something weird going on when they heard a sound like an ambulance siren in the distance. Following the sound to a footbridge over a creek, the two children were confronted by a three fingered hand wearing a blue glove that beckoned them from beneath the bridge. Awaiting them was a seven foot humanoid figure wearing strange clownish clothing, seemingly reinforced with wooden slats that protruded from his sleeves and pant-legs. The figure had a book in his hands, which he immediately fumbled and dropped in the water. He splashed around cartoonishly before recovering his book, leaping out of the creek and away from the children. He moved to a small metal shed with a high-kneed hopping gait and disappeared inside. The children went to leave, only for the mysterious entity to exit again with a microphone that appeared to be the source of the wailing that drew the children in the first place. It spoke into the microphone in a friendly, non-threatening tone. “Are you still here?” The children were curious and unafraid, so they moved towards him. He held up his book and pointed at the words in order to introduce himself. “Hello and I am all colours, Sam”. They asked if he was human and he said no and when asked if he was a ghost he replied, “well, not really but I am in an odd sort of way.” The children asked what he was then and he simply said, “You know.” During their conversation with the entity they learned that although he went by Sam, he didn’t really have a name, he claimed that there were others like him and that he was afraid of humans and that he was a pacifist, refusing to harm others even if they should attack him. He invited them into his hut, where he shared some wildberries and showed them a magic trick, where he placed a berry into his ear and seemingly teleported it to his mask’s eyehole and then to his mouth with quick jerks of his head. They continued to converse for almost an hour before the children decided to leave. Was he an alien in a make-do disguise? An animated scarecrow? A figment of childish imaginations? Or just a strange homeless man dressed like a clown? Whatever the truth, All Colours Sam, also known as the Sandown Ghost Clown, was never seen again. The Crazy Critter of Bald Mountain This weird looking creature was sighted by three people in the week following a fiery object that passed over the Bald Mountain near Newaukum Lake in Washington. When the local Sheriff began an investigation into the sighting he was visited by heavily armed and uniformed men who claimed to be from the Air Force and forced him to give up the case. Old Saybrook Blockheads Mary Starr was awoken in the early morning on December 16, 1957 by a bright light shining into her bedroom. She looked out the window to witness a 30 foot cigar shaped craft hovering over her yard, less than 10 feet from her house! Inside the apparent spaceship she witnessed a pair of small creatures with fleshy skirts and clear cubic “heads” containing a floating red bulb. They raised their right arms and as a third entity appeared in the portholes the ship brightened before shooting off into the sky. Space Brains of Palos Verdes As John Hodges and Pete Rodriguez were leaving a party at two in the morning they were not expecting to meet anything from out of this world but as the car turned on its headlights illuminated two bizarre entities! The men panicked and drove away, ending the story for Rodriguez as he made it home with no complications. However, in Hodges case he next became aware of himself two and a half hours later in the driveway of his home, sitting in the car as if in a trance. Troubled by the missing time, he eventually went for hypnosis in an attempt to recover his memories of the night. While under regression he claimed that while he got his friend home safely, when he returned to his own residence the disembodied brains were waiting for him! He asked them what they wanted and suddenly he was elsewhere, in a dark room with entities that looked like the classic Greys but very tall and with webbed six fingered hands and yellow eyes. They explained that the brains were “merely translators” used in order for these beings to interface telepathically with humans. He claimed they warned him that Earth had “too much power” and showed him a map of the planet covered in lights that indicated places where humans might destroy themselves. They showed him images of dead planets and made several inaccurate prophecies before he suddenly found himself back in his car. Unlike many other abductees with similar experiences Hodges did not try to make excuses for their bunk predictions or feel like it made him important in any way. He simply assumed the aliens were untrustworthy and were playing with him. The Casa Blanca Entities This is one of the strangest and most confusing accounts of a Close Encounter of the Fifth kind, as eight children ranging from the ages of four to fifteen were terrorized by a parade of extraterrestrial monsters one summer day in 1955. It started with an array of UFOs, sun-like, disk-shaped and semi-transparent, appearing and disappearing with musical pings. Then came the entities. First was a ghostly being bearing a shiny belt buckle that was so brilliant it could blind someone looking straight at it. It was followed by disembodied arms in riveted armor that seemed to beckon to the children, small strange men that used dual ray guns to paralyze and finally a many limbed creature. All through this strange arrival something spoke to the children telepathically, offering to take them away. The kids they spoke to often seemed to be entranced, moving to the dancing UFOs mindlessly and required physical force or even being hosed down to snap them out. One child even fell off a roof in an attempt to reach a UFO, only to be protected by a red force field. The weirdest part of all is that not only did adults not see anything, they couldn’t. Despite being present for the event a mother of one of the children was unaware of the paranormal happenings. Does this mean it was all in the children’s heads, as they were overtaken by some kind of playground hysteria? Or is there some alien force that not only wants our children but can make themselves invisible to undesirable observers. The Garson Invaders In 1954 three of these insectoid entities appeared to Canadian miner Ennio La Sarza. Their appearance was already exceptional by the usual standards of reported alien contact but in a particularly striking detail their faces appeared to glow in colours La Sarza had never seen before! The beings asked La Sarza to do something for them but he refused, not only to do it but to even speak of it. It was so awful and “outright apocalyptic” that he even considered asking the RCMP to lock him up in case the creatures he’d met had some way to enforce his cooperation. The Poole Pyramid This multi-hued metallic pyramid appeared in 1965 to seven year old Terrence Druce of Poole in Dorset when he awoke to it hovering over the foot of his bed. He shrieked in terror, waking his younger brother in time for him to also witness it as it faded into thin air. That encounter might have never been recorded if the brothers hadn’t seen it again the very next day, lurking in a parking lot. They said it seemed aware of their presence and turned to watch them but it did not follow them when they decided to flee the scene. Delta Dogs An anonymous woman was driving through a snowstorm on route 07 through Syracuse in January 1958. She came across what at first seemed to be a downed plane but as she approached her engine slowly ran itself down and the car stopped itself. As she desperately tried to restart the car the snowstorm calmed and more details became apparent. Projecting out of the large object she’d thought was a plane crash was a 50 foot illuminated pole. Two strange beings rose up along the pole, floating by it as it started to retract. When the pole finished sinking into the object the creatures disappeared and the craft took off so fast she couldn’t make out where it went. The Electric Serpent of Tacoma This is easily the most unusual sighting of a sea creature that I’ve ever heard of. Seven men camping on the shore of Black Fish Bay in 1893 encountered a sea monster that appeared to be cybernetic, if not entirely biomechanical! Disturbed by a horrible noise and blinding lights the men left their camp to find a huge, hairy walrus-like animal with steaming horns, bands of coppery metal and a revolving propeller-like tail! One of the men approached it to get a better look, only to be struck by an electric blast from its copper bands and fell to the ground as if dead. When one of his friends tried to pull him to safety, he was likewise shocked by the impossible animal. The other men fled into the woods after seeing two of their number seemingly killed and the Electric Serpent seemed to lose interest and swam out into Puget Sound. Once they were sure it was gone the remaining men returned to the beach and were elated to find their friends burned and stunned but still very much alive! So what happened? Was it just one of the sadly common newspaper hoaxes of the time? Or did a bunch of 19th century fishermen find a literal fucking pokemon? You decide! Stickmen The Stickmen are an extremely recent phenomenon, with reports starting within the last 10 years or so. They are described as being stick thin and roughly humanoid, sometimes with bubble heads, glowing eyespots or even top hats. They range in size from human-like to towering in excess of 20 feet. What is most interesting about them is their apparent two dimensionality, sometimes appearing the same no matter what angle they are viewed at and sometimes being able to turn to the side and vanish as though they were never there. They are also frequently reported as being accompanied by a feeling like static electricity and of aggression or hostility. Despite those impressions the Stickmen do not appear to be hostile, instead seeming surprised and immediately retreating from a witness.

Ep 205: Terry Carnation's "Dark Air" and Rich Hatem
“Imagine the universe, compressed on the head of a pin…”
– Scott’s remembrance of a Carl Sagan quote, which, turns out, probably originates from a parody impression of Carl Sagan
Description:
We have a very special guest joining us tonight, metaphysical "astralnaut," philosopher of the liminal, "Pope of the Paranormal," and host of the AM Radio talk show Dark Air, Terry Carnation. Terry first got his start in the paranormal radio genre when unexpectedly thrust into taking over for another show. While working as a late-night rock n' roll Disc Jockey for an FM station in Buffalo, NY, in 1992, Reginald Wilcox, the host of the paranormal call-in show that aired after Terry's slot was mysteriously murdered while Terry was in the bathroom... or so he claims. In his unflappable sense of duty, apparently stronger than his sense of legal obligation, Terry immediately took over the role of consigliere for listeners stupefied by the supernatural. And in Terry's words, "that's how a legend was created." Now, after a three-year hiatus, Terry Carnation returns with a new podcast, also called Dark Air, available starting April 1, 2021, wherever podcasts are given away for free. While you may not have heard of him, there will be something uneasily familiar about his voice and visage. And the audience will come to know his strange power for tearing off the head of disbelief and reaching down deep into our souls to yank out the viscera of our darkest fears and mysteries. Wrapped around our interview with Terry, our good buddy Rich Hatem joins us once again to discuss his latest adventures and projects. We'll also con him into playing our version of a game show, in the spirit of America's NPR radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and Britain's Would I Lie to You? We'll tell Rich three outrageous paranormal stories, and he has to guess which one is fake. Please join us for an episode of inscrutable levity.

Sleep Paralysis and the Monsters Inside Your Mind
Research suggests that cultural beliefs about the phenomenon may make it more terrifying to experience
By Baland Jalal (Scientific American)
Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to an unearthly figure with blood dripping down its fangs. You try to scream, but you can’t. You can’t move a single muscle! If this sounds familiar, you’ve probably experienced an episode of sleep paralysis, which involves the inability to move or speak upon falling asleep or awakening and is often coupled with hallucinations. About one in five people have had sleep paralysis at least once. But despite its prevalence, it has largely remained a mystery. For centuries, cultures across the world have attributed these hallucinations to black magic, mythical monsters, even paranormal activity. Scientists have since dismissed such explanations, yet these cultural beliefs persist. In fact, research, conducted over roughly a decade in six different countries, suggests that beliefs about sleep paralysis can dramatically shape the physical and psychological experience, revealing a striking type of mind-body interaction.
Sleep paralysis is caused by what appears to be a basic brain glitch at the interface between wakefulness and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During REM, you have intensely lifelike dreams. To prevent you from acting out these realistic dreams (and hurting yourself!), your brain has a clever solution: it temporarily paralyzes your entire body. Indeed, your brain has a “switch” (a handful of neurochemicals) that tilts you between sleep and wakefulness. Sometimes the “switch” fails, however—your brain inadvertently wakes up while your body is still under the “spell” of REM paralysis, leaving you stuck in a paradoxical state between parallel realities: wakefulness and REM sleep. During sleep paralysis, the crisp dreams of REM “spill over” into waking consciousness like a dream coming alive before your eyes—fanged figures and all.
These hallucinations—often involving seeing and sensing ghostly bedroom intruders—are interpreted differently around the world. In Egypt, sleep paralysis is often thought to be caused by a jinn (“genie”)—a supernatural creature that terrorizes and sometimes kills its victims. In Italy, some interpret sleep paralysis as an assault by the so-called Pandafeche, a figure described as a malevolent witch or terrifying giant cat. In South Africa, Indigenous people believe the state to be caused by segatelelo (black magic), involving menacing dwarflike creatures called tokoloshe, and in Turkey, it is the karabasan—mysterious spirit-like creatures. In contrast, the Danes offer a less imaginative explanation: they largely attribute sleep paralysis to physiological risk factors such as stress.
These explanations—scientific and sensationalist—can have a profound impact on how people experience sleep paralysis. When directly comparing the phenomenon in Egypt and Denmark, it was found that Egyptians fear it much more than Danes do. In fact, more than 50 percent of Egyptians who experienced the condition were convinced that sleep paralysis was deadly. Egyptians also believed that the episodes lasted longer—and remarkably, they occurred three times more often for this group. Beliefs about sleep paralysis among Egyptians appeared to have dramatically shaped their experience. Those who attributed it to supernatural forces suffered greater fear of the experience and longer paralysis. A pattern was revealing itself. Paired with particular beliefs, sleep paralysis had gone from a simple “brain glitch” to a chronic, prolonged and potentially fatal supernatural event.
The question was whether the results could be replicated. Italians also have striking cultural beliefs about the origin of sleep paralysis. More than a third of those from the Abruzzo region thought their sleep paralysis might be caused by the Pandafeche creature. Like Egyptians, Italians also experienced sleep paralysis more frequently, with prolonged paralysis and excessive fear of the experience. In both groups, beliefs about the disorder heightened symptoms in a bizarre mind-body interaction with “nocebolike” effects. An active imagination had the astonishing ability to shape physiological experiences.
Based on these findings, it appears that the more people fear sleep paralysis, the more they experience it, and the stronger its effects are. What were once thought to be benign, even inventive, beliefs have transformed the disorder, triggering conditioned fear and coloring the content of hallucinations. Anxiety and stress predispose people to an attack, so those who dread it are often more likely to experience it. Indeed, sleep paralysis is nearly twice as common in Egypt, compared with Denmark. And as discovered in Italy, those who believe their sleep paralysis may have a supernatural cause are also more likely to hallucinate during the attack—including experiencing a ghostly “sensed presence.” Once sleep paralysis occurs, it is subsequently interpreted through the lens of fear, leading to more anxiety and unwanted awakenings—and effectively, more sleep paralysis. This vicious cycle—the “panic-hallucination model”—continues to feed into itself until sleep paralysis becomes chronic, prolonged and, worse yet, potentially psychopathological.
Our new findings raise the intriguing possibility that sleep paralysis, if accompanied by certain beliefs, is not just frightening but may also be potentially traumatizing. The effects can linger long after an episode ends. Notably, in one study in Egypt, it was found that people who have experienced the phenomenon have elevated trauma and anxiety symptoms, relative to those who have never experienced it. Those with visual hallucinations—seeing “demonic beings,” say—are even more at risk. In another study in Abruzzo and colleagues recently showed that fear during sleep paralysis, and fear of dying from the attack, was linked to trauma and depression symptoms. These findings indicate that when it is understood through a particular cultural filter, the disorder can cause psychopathology.
For those suffering from sleep paralysis, sleep is not an escape from reality. Indeed, for some, “sleeping” can potentially lead to a mental disorder. The human mind is vastly more mysterious, and occasionally malevolent, than one would have thought.

What is everyone’s favorite horror genres and who has an example of a particular horror movie they love? I’ve been pondering this question for a while and wanted to hear it from everyone themselves :)
OK, first of all, we’ve had a similar question last year, so I’ll leave a link to that too! Some info in this ask came straight from that one haha. Also, movie names are all puns or similar names here).
Anyways, here are your answers!:
Giovanni: Well... I'd say my favorite horror movie is “The Shiny”, from 1980. Usually I'm more into crime movies and down-to-earth plots, not monsters and ghosts and all that supernatural stuff... I like seeing actual people making others scared in somewhat realistic ways... And I like how in The Shiny you don't actually know if the ghosts are real or just the man's imagination... I really like that movie. I'd say my favorite horror genre is psychological horror!
Archie: Welp, my favorite horror genre is certainly monster movies! Specially weird monsters, like scientific experiments gone wrong, or natural abominations that no one knows where came from! I really like the “Monstrozedo” trilogy! Specially the second one, from 1978! It's awesome!
Maxie: I'm very much into paranormal horror! Specially ghost movies and haunted houses! But... not much into possession movies, to be honest... My favorite is “Polteageist”, from 1982! But there are many others I like, I really love that saga about the haunted doll too... Oh, and I also sorta like monster movies too!
Cyrus: I don't really care about movies. But if I had to choose something... I suppose... Anything that isn't gore... I can't stand blood and guts and all this. It makes me sick.
Ghetsis: I like all horror movies! But specially the ones with lots of graphic violence!!! I want to see blood! I want to see pain and suffering!!! I want to see extremely disturbing content and pain!!! Hahahahahaha! Oh, killer movies are also cool. What really matters is having people suffering on screen so that I CAN LAUGH AT THEM HAHAHAHAHA!!! I really like "Handsaw", from 2004.
Colress: I like oldish horror movies, like... from the 50's, 60's... I love the aesthetics of it! In fact, “Creature from the Lake of Rage”, from 1954 may as well be my favorite! I particualrly like monster and alien horror movies... Having a human kill other people is kinda boring... And having paranormal things happen doesn't really speak to me. But monsters and aliens? Oh, heck yeah!
N: I don't watch a lot of horror, because I'm... uh... I get scared easily. Specially with jumpscares. I prefer thrillers, like... Something that won't try to scare me on purpose but that can be exciting and make me nervous! I like that! I like being kinda nervous while watching but... being able to sleep at night after the movie is over ahaha!
Lysandre: Oh, no, darling, no. Horror is not for me. I get scared and sad and I end up crying! Not that the monsters are scary or that the blood bothers me... I'm fine with that! But you know, they are often so dark and the soundtrack is dissonant and weird and there are shouts and... oh! It's just usually ugly.
Lusamine: The most scary movie I've ever watched was an animation called “The Happy Kricketot”, from 2001... They said it was a children's movie... But it was... scary.... Maybe the worst genre is Children Horror then... Animations of happy Kricketots singing and dancind... they haunt my nightmares...
Guzma: Look, bro, I like Zombie horror movies! I like them movies that have lots of action and fighting and stuff, you know? People shootin' all around tryin' to survive the end of the world and such! So cool! One of my faves is “Train to Cerulean”, from 2016! Real good stuff! Awesome!
Piers: Nah, mate... Horror movies are usually pretty lame in my opinion. Their sole purpose is to scare people, but they never scare me! Like, stories are usually bad, characters are usually dumb, special effects are usually bad too... So like... whatev'r... To be honest, I'm not super into movies in general, but horror movies are usually lame.
Rose: Hm... I like crime movies! I don't usually watch a lot of horror, but... some horror movie about a serial killer for example or something like that could be actually cool! I don't know, I might try watching something!

My Talk: Blood Blockade Battlefront/Kekkai Sensen
When paranormal activity happens in the streets of Manhattan, there’s only one group of powerful beings to stop these actions from spreading to the outside world. Their name is Libra. This is the reflection of Blood Blockade Battlefront or Kekkai Sensen.
Also on occasion, I’ll say both titles of the show.
This anime was brought to my attention, thanks to YouTube. They suggested the opening and ending themes to me where I saw them over 50 times. I had to see more than the themes.
Plot. After a supernatural rift tore up on New York, it created a new place called  Hellsalem’s Lot. Every human, creature, and other species live together in a chaotic harmony. One day, Leonardo is involved with the chaos and meets with Libra. Libra is an organization that makes sure no supernatural beings escape out of Hellsalem’s Lot. Leonardo, mistaken in this organization, manages to become a member of Libra with his greatest, his All Seeing Eyes of the Gods. The rest goes on with Leonardo’s joruney to help his sister and protect Hellsalem’s Lot from dangerous chaos.
Characters. Leonardo is our main protagonist who wants to help gain his sister’s sight back and is a photographer. While he’s cautious and freaks out about the insanity of Hellsalem’s Lot, he’s humble and cares about the people around him. Now, for the members of Libra! Klaus is the leader who has great intelligence, skillful, and can pack a punch with his cross weapon. Zapp has an amazing skill to manipulate his blood to a blade and cause mass explosions. He also is a womanizer, enjoys bullying Leonardo, and is hot-temped. Chain is werewolf with the ability of high speed and erasing her presence. She often gets into arguments with Zapp, and at times Chain will destroy him. Steven is a smooth, gentleman who can freeze enemies at contact. K.K is a badass master of guns while being a great mother to her kids. Deldro Brody & Dog Hummer are two men sharing one body. Deldro’s blood was replaced with Dog Hummer, who is a serial killer. Dog is a body shield for Deldro as Dog has mass strength and protect. Zedd is the latest member who joins with Libra. He and Zapp share the same skills as they were both trained by the same master. Gilbert is Klaus’s butler who handles the intelligence work of Libra. Other characters in Kekkai Sensen range from villians to supporting cast: Femt, Aligura, Theodora, Michella, Vivian, Don Arlelelle Eruca Fulgrouche, Neji, Lieutenant Daniel, White, and Black.
Animation. With epic action and supernatural elements, the only studio that was capable to pull it off is Studio Bones. Bones always go above and beyond with its animation. It shows when the action sequences, colors of Hellsalem’s Lot at night, and Leonardo’s eyes. I specifically love the colors and scenes that move you with their beautiful animation that drives you to tears. It gets even more glorious with their openings and endings. It’s the best animation for the time of 2015. Props again to Studio Bones and their animatiors.
Rie Matsumoto and Shigehito Takayanagi. Two directors that I have to thank for their direction. I have more appreication for Rie than Shigehito. However, I enjoy Shigehito for finishing the show to follow the manga and its ending. Shigehito managed to show more interactions with the members of Libra and the reunion of Leonardo and Michella which Rie wasn’t able to do since the manga was still in progress when she directed the first season. That didn’t stop her from creating the greatest anime season ever. I don’t care, fight me! The first season of Blood Blockade Battlefront is one of the best thing I’ve seen in my anime watching. Rie has maintain to tell the story of Kekkai Sensen with half of the manga, gone to extraordinary artistic moments to give such magical animation, and poured her heart out in her direction that gave her brilliant praise from the public. Again, Rie and Shigehito did satisfying work with Blood Blockade Battlefront.
Personal favorite of mine. It’s no secret that I adore Kekkai Sensen. The animation is glorious to see, the story is engaging and makes you feel like you’re a part of the Libra as well, and music is elegant. They have a variety of genres in music, and Taisei Iwasaki is creative as heck. Not to mention, the English dub is amazing. Aaron Dismuke specifically was perfection. He is Leonardo Watch. Other actors like Phil Parsons, Ian Sinclair, Trina Nishimura, J. Michael Tatum, Stephanie Young, and so on are made to be their characters. It moved me to tears with emotional scenes, the characters were relatable and great to see, and everything else fitted in as a puzzle. I cherish this show dearly, and I want more people to witness its greatness.
Blood Blockade Battlefront is incredibly, kick ass. I love every aspect of this show. It was wonderful to see how Leonardo was once a photographer who later becomes a hero for Hellsalem’s Lot. It was memorizing, delightful, and fantastic! Now, we can all enjoy ourselves and dance to Sugar Song to Bitter Step!

Creature Feature: Flatwoods Monster
Some cases within the world of cryptozoology, UFOlogy, and the paranormal have managed to become almost legendary in their fields. These are the rockstar cases that seem to have defied all attempts to dispute or debunk them, refusing to die and managing to live on and even transcend mere eyewitness reports to become legendary. One such case that is as well known and persistent as it is mysterious is that of a very strange creature that appeared one evening in a small U.S. town amid stories of a UFO landing, and would go on to catapult itself into the annals of great cases of the paranormal.
Tumblr media
The setting for this very bizarre tale is the small rural town of Flatwoods in Braxton County, West Virginia. It is a quiet town pretty much in the middle of nowhere, where everyone knows each other and not much typically happens, but on September 12, 1952, all that would change, and the peace would be disrupted by a world changing event for them. On this evening, at around 7:15 PM, brothers Edward and Fred May were outside playing a friendly game of football when they were surprised to see what looked like a pulsating, blazing ball of fire go streaking across the sky to come down and seemingly crash in some hilly woods at a nearby farm owned by a G. Bailey Fisher.
Not quite believing what they had just witnessed, the excited boys ran to the house of a neighbor named Kathleen May, to whom they breathlessly told of what they had seen. May gathered up a flashlight and called together a group of people composed of local children Neil Nunley and Ronnie Shaver, as well as 17-year-old West Virginia National Guardsman Eugene Lemon, to go investigate the area where the strange ball of fire had gone down, along with Lemon’s dog. As they followed the beam of the flashlight out into the night past the dancing, flickering trees they still had no idea what they were dealing with or what to expect out there, and there was a sense of apprehension and even fear as they stumbled along up a hill on the farm. Little did they know that things were about to get very bizarre indeed.
When they reached the top of the wooded hill they could see through the trees what seemed to be a pulsating red light, and they were overcome by a sudden, nauseating metallic stench that they would later describe as a “pungent mist.” In the meantime, the dog snarled and barked before retreating with its tail between its legs, leaving them stabbing about in the darkness with the flashlight beam, searching for whatever it was that had chased the animal away. As they peered through the darkness trying to make out just what the light ahead was and what lie out there in the gloom, they could see glinting in the light of the flashlight what looked like the shining eyes of some nocturnal animal, but it soon became apparent that this was no animal any of them had ever seen before.
The mysterious eyes seemed to be set within a massive humanoid figure standing around 10 feet tall, with a round, fiery red face with glowing yellow eyes set within it, framed in some sort of hood or cowl shaped like “the ace of spades” embedded with flickering lights, and possessing small clawed hands, and a dark green, possibly black cylindrical body with what appeared to be folds upon it like some sort of draped fabric or molded metal, the whole of which was wreathed in some mist or fog. None of them got much of a chance to examine it for too long, because after a few moments whatever the entity was emitted “something between a hiss and a high-pitched squeal,” and then glided right towards them with a “thumping, throbbing noise” to send the terrified witnesses running for their lives down the hill, dropping the flashlight in the process to send them into near total darkness. Upon returning home they would all experience severe nausea, swelling of the throat, and even convulsions, compared with the symptoms of mustard gas by the doctor who examined them.
The next day, local law enforcement checked out the site of the purported incident, but were unable to find any corroborating evidence for anything the group said they had seen. There was no trace of any pulsing light, no sign of the creature or its odiferous stench, and nothing at all to suggest anything out of the ordinary. That was the official consensus, but of course word got out and it was not long at all before the media was stoking the fires of UFO rumors by claiming that signs of a landing, such as “skid marks” and an “odd, gummy deposit,” as well as strange pieces of a plastic like material, had been found at the scene by a reporter named A. Lee Stewart, Jr., and it was also discovered that numerous people in the area had also seen an object streak across the sky on the night in question. The case took off as a real UFO landing, and the media went with it, splashing it all over newspapers as various UFO enthusiasts and paranormal investigators descended on the area as well, including esteemed Fortean writers Gray Barker, Ivan T. Sanderson, and John Keel arriving to investigate.
Various strange accounts began to come out of the woodwork at the time, such as one woman who claimed to have seen the same monster that had been described just a few weeks before, and another witness who said that her house had reverberated and been shaken by some mysterious force on the night in question. Another report came from a couple who claimed that just hours after the original sighting they had been driving down the highway when they had noticed a horrible metallic smell and been assaulted with what felt like an electrical charge, before witnessing an otherworldly reptilian creature float across the road in front of them.
There were other odd accounts as well. Mrs. May would claim that the day after the incident she had been approached at her home by two mysterious men who said they were reporters and had asked to be shown the site, after which they would emerge from the trees with strange oily stains on their clothes. In later years even more strange accounts would surface, such as a commander of the West Virginia National Guard named Captain Dale Leavitt, who in the 1990s would say that he had examined the area with 50 Air Force personnel after the “crash” and find an oily substance and a mysterious “6m circle of depressed grass.”
There would also turn out to have been numerous other sightings of UFOs on the night of September 12 across several states. Indeed, in an account compiled by investigator Frank Feschino, Jr. in 2004, there would be hundreds of reports of unidentified flying objects and landings reported on from the same night as the incident. Adding to all of this were the odd physical symptoms reported by the witnesses and their doctors, as well as the subsequent strange death of the dog who had been with them, which allegedly began vomiting uncontrollably and dropped dead for no clear reason. All things told, the weird incident sparked UFOmania in the small rural town, and many were convinced that what had been seen was an actual alien spacecraft landing and its unearthly occupant. Indeed, Ivan T. Sanderson was sure that this was the case, and that the numerous other UFO reports from the same time frame implied perhaps a whole fleet of the objects passing the area.
In the years after the Flatwoods encounter the original witnesses would stick by their story, insisting on what they had seen, and it became one of the most famous alien encounters in the annals of the paranormal. So what was it they saw out there? What was that light, the noxious odor, and indeed that looming, glowing eyed beast? What connection did this have to the lights that so many people saw shooting across the sky on that same exact evening? Just what is going on with the case of the Flatwoods Monster? That depends a lot on who you ask.
A very persuasive skeptical argument is that the whole mysterious event is the result of a unique convergence of a mixture of misidentification and coincidence. In this theory the light, or lights as the case is often described, was perhaps a meteor, which was mistakenly thought to have crashed behind that wooded hill by the witnesses. There were indeed many people who reported the light seen as not a UFO, but as a meteor, so perhaps the witnesses saw this celestial event and jumped to a different conclusion. They then warily went up that dark hill in a state of fear, the atmosphere made more ominous by a blanket of fog that was covering the area at the time. In this state of dread, they saw one of the three aircraft warning hazard beacons in the area visible from that hill, and considering the meteor they had seen mistook it for a UFO.
But what about the horrible monster they saw, you ask? The skeptical take on it is that this was no monster at all, but rather a large barn owl perched atop a high branch. In the murky darkness, with fear pervading the air and low visibility and that sinister light visible through the trees, the witnesses misidentified the owl and its perch as being part of a single entity. The owl, just as startled as the witnesses, had then flown off past them into the night, letting out one of the bird’s distinctive shrill cries in the process. In their panic and surprise, the witnesses had mistaken it for an alien entity flying towards them, sending them running. Many of the features of a barn owl match up with the description of the creature, and looking at artistic representations comparing the monster and an owl it is easy to see the similarities, especially considering that they had only seen it fleetingly for a few moments in dim lighting before fleeing in terror.
This all seems to make sense so far, but then we are left to ask just what about the other evidence found, such as the oily residue and the strange track marks? Some have pointed out that these tracks could have been caused by a tractor that was in the area at around the time of the sighting, the oil perhaps leaking from it, or even from the truck of a local man who had gone driving through hoping to see the creature. The foul odor had been suggested as being exuded by a type of grass native to the area with a distinctive smell. And the negative physical symptoms are claimed by skeptics to have been simply caused by deep fear and over exertion. Skeptic Joe Nickell wrote a whole deconstruction of the case for the Skeptical Enquirer, which you can read here, and it is so convincing that even many paranormal researchers and UFOlogists have conceded that this is probably what actually happened.
Joe Nickell’s sketch comparing a barn owl and the alleged “monster”
It certainly seems to be open and shut when looking at all of the clues and evidence that this may have just been one big misunderstanding seen through the lens of anxiety and fear, later sensationalized by the media and embellished with countless books and articles in the lore of the paranormal. Yet there are many who think that the case is far from solved, pointing out that there are still aspects that don’t fit in neatly with the skeptical theory, such as the pulsing quality of the “meteor” and the fact that a whole group of people saw the creature and maintained that it was no owl.
Whatever the answer may be, whether this was some alien entity or the product of misidentification and overactive imaginations, the tale of the Flatwoods Monster still gets plenty of play in paranormal circles, and is still talked about and debated to this day. It has become such a legendary case that the town of Flatwoods has a museum dedicated to the creature and an annual weekend festival to commemorate it called “Flatwoods Days,” which features live music, and food and craft vendors. There is even a sign on the road leading into town that reads “Welcome to Flatwoods / Home of the Green Monster,” so it seems that whatever the Flatwoods Monster was or wherever it went, it has been ingrained in the town’s culture and in the world of Forteana, and in a sense is here to stay.

WIP: Good For Something | World-building: Demons
“You’re not going to hurt me, are you?”
“Never. You’re my familiar.” The words came out like a guttural growl that had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end.
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“Is this what it means to be a demon?” I asked carefully, gesturing to my face instead of his, unsure of what to make of the look in his eyes that was becoming a lot less human and a lot more monstrous.
He shook his head, the mass of razor sharp teeth glinting in the candle light.
“I’m holding back quite a bit.” There was a tightness in his jaw that wasn’t there before.
I let my hands drop from his face, and he ducked his head to press it back into my open palm, looking up at me.
“Show me.” I said, steeling myself for what was about to happen.
He leaned back slightly, elongating his neck.
And, with the stretch of muscle and crack of bones, I watched my familiar shift into something inhuman.
Within the blink of an eyes, the teenager in front of me was gone.
Instead, I was sat in an expensive hotel room, nose to muzzle with a large black wolf with blazing red eyes.
Basics:
Demons are a phenomenon of non-human creatures native to the Hellscape, though few chose to take passage into The God’s Continent in search of pacts, mates or to just escape the harsh life of the darker world.
Demons can take many forms, though the most common form is known as Shifters. These Demon’s can take a specific animal or human form with ease once they reach maturity.
With heightened senses, superior physical ability, yet the ability to understand and relate to the human psyche, Demons truly are the top of the food chain and are the most dominant predator with either a physical tendency to lean towards either strength or speed.
When in human form it is very difficult to distinguish a demon from a human, the only attribute that could be used to tell whether it is a human or demon you are talking to is their lack of heartbeat.
It is said that demons carry a heavy and individualistic scent in order to mark their belongings and to warn other demons away from their territories.
History:
The histories say The God’s themselves were the beginning of Shifters. Upon the world’s creation the elemental God’s found themselves gifted with the ability to shift into animal form.
Fire took the form of a wolf. Earth took the form of a lioness. Water took the form of a Horse. Air took the form of a vulture. The Moon was the only God to not take an animal form. The sixth was erased from record.
Packs:
Demon’s are social creatures that form small groups that become their main social support system akin to family units and Familiars. These groups are named Packs.
These groups are usually no bigger than five members and the bonds are often formed when the members go through significant changes or events in their life. Packs develop extremely strong personal bonds with the separation or death of a pack-mate will cause significant emotional and chronic physical pain, much like long term separation from a person’s Familiar.
Members of the same pack can be recognised by the appearance of a tattoo-like brand somewhere on their bodies that they share.
Packs usually are formed around a leader or an alpha, who have elements of their æthic aura that non-alpha demons find soothing yet commanding.
Mates:
A Demon’s significant other is known as their Mate. These are a Demon’s life partner. The are creatures that mate for life, and after the death of their Mate the cannot mate again, unlike some animal creatures that will find another mate for the next breeding season. Demon’s mate through exchanging bites to the neck or shoulder regions as a physical means to create a permanent bond.
Demons have breeding cycles a few times a year once reaching maturity with the rate of these cycles increasing depending on whether they are mated or not. Demon’s refer to their offspring as their young. If mated with a human, there is a 50/50 chance of their young being demon or human. If a demons young takes after a human they are called Demi-Demons.
Not all demons are heterosexual, yet those who aren’t still experience compulsions akin to breeding cycles with partners. Demons have been known to adopt and care for abandoned or orphaned young.
Curses, Pacts and Humans:
Demons were cursed along with humankind so have abilities and Familiars as humans do. However, there is a phenomenon known as Demon Pacts. Little is known about Demon Pacts, other than the fact that if a demon loses their Familiar at a young age they are sent out from the Hellscape to The God’s continent to make a deal. These deals are usually the gift of their Curse to a human in exchange for something of the demon’s choosing and familiarship. Little else is known to humans.
Demons relations with humans can be anywhere from hostile to romantic depending on the particular demon. Predominantly, Demons keep to themselves and are never heavily involved with humans unless they are Familiars with one or seek one as a mate.
Though primarily social creatures, there are few recorded demons currently residing on The God’s Continent. Those that are recorded are in service of the Queen.
Here we go! My take on shifters! My ode to paranormal fantasy. I hope you guys find this interesting. I’m trying to subvert the ‘big bad alpha werewolf male’ thing thats been around since forever, so this is still a wip within my wip! I’m sorry for the long post and I hope you like it.
Please ask if you would like to be added to or removed from the tag list! (I may have forgotten people sorry bbys love you)

Blades & Blasters: 5e DnD Alien Invasion Rulebook & Bestiary
An alien invasion supplement for your 5th edition campaign!
Tumblr media
This project began in early 2017 when I thought to myself in passing, “How cool would it be to design a campaign about an alien invasion in a medieval fantasy setting?” The answer, of course, is: “Very cool.” It wasn’t until several months later that I began putting serious thought into the idea.
A certain popular game master’s book lists some rules and statistics about alien weapons and technology but I knew immediately that the limited information given would not be enough to build a campaign.
I developed lists of weapons, vehicles, technologies, and of course, a rich selection of alien creatures. With these new items came the need for a new set of rules. Together, all of these new additions the core 5th edition rules make up the Blades & Blasters: Bestiary & Rulebook.
Nothing in this book will override the core 5e rules that we’ve all become so familiar with. My goal was not to reinvent the wheel or create a new RPG. I wanted to build something that could easily fit into existing games and campaign settings.

The Sassoon Files
Cthulhu Mythos RPG scenarios and campaign set in 1920's Shanghai.
Tumblr media
Horror in the Pearl of the East! The Sassoon Files will be a set of scenarios and campaign resources for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition and GUMSHOE role-playing games (RPGs) set in historical 1920s Shanghai; an international city of intrigue, espionage, style and violence.
Victor Sassoon, a preeminent bon vivant, has found himself trading correspondence with Doctor Henry Armitage. They share a common goal and a common modus operandi. Victor fights to keep his empire safe, but he also fights for a Shanghai free from Mythos influence. Victor has gathered around him professors, detectives, muscles, guns, criminals and other problem solvers to mount a defense against a rising tide. Victor is your hook.
The trail leads to...
a strange gate opened by an ancient Daoist ritual, and an alien spirit called forth from the Polaris solar system.
a Shanghai triad operated by someone claiming to be the deceased Empress Dowager Cixi.
a scam at the horse track, a heartbroken triad gangster, and the Bloated Woman.
a lost city of golden sands, a field of black lotus, and a place suspended in time and space.
The Sassoon Files will be released as a PDF and a printed book, approximately 150 - 200 pages long. It will be modular in design; each of the included scenarios may be played as a "one-off" session or as part of a larger campaign set in 1920's Shanghai. The scenarios will be tied together by common locations, characters, threats and themes. The history of the Paris of the East is rich; with the help of the Sassoon Files, you will be able to dig deep into the vein of Old Shanghai.
The Sassoon Files will include the history of Shanghai and some of the primary factions that competed for influence and power: the Communists and Nationalists who played a game of deadly cat and mouse; the Jewish tycoon who provided succor to refugees; the Triad societies who competed to provide vice for the city's residents; the Japanese who were moving closer to invasion. The Sassoon Files will also explore the secret history of the Mythos, and the local factions who sought to exploit that which could not be fully comprehended.

3 New Sidequest Decks: After the TPK; Modern; & Lovecraftian
More Sidequest Decks! Each card is a system neutral mini-adventure. One side is the main map, the other is the adventure outline.
Tumblr media
Sidequest Decks are system agnostic tabletop RPG accessories.  They are perfect for when your players unexpectedly take a casual comment for a story hook, for stocking a hex crawl or serving as the basis of a larger adventure. You may even chain several together for an entire  campaign!
Each card has a map on one side and a mini-adventure outline on the other side. The outline starts with a short description for the GM. (Skim these to find an adventure that fits the circumstances.) Choose between a couple of story hooks to get the adventure started. Next several encounter ideas move the game along. Finally each card wraps up with one or two follow-up adventure ideas.
We've made several of these decks over the past few years, and now we're planning three more:
After the Total Party Kill
The party didn't survive the final showdown--or worse, they didn't even get that far.  Sure you can make up new characters and the original characters' "cousins" can show up or you can even start completely over.  But thumb through these cards and you'll find adventure ideas to keep the campaign going. For example, have the PCs fight their way out of Hell. Or perhaps they are ghost-like and can continue their quest as ghosts hoping to return to their bodies. This deck will have over 50 ideas!
Lovecraftian/Paranormal
This deck of 50+ cards will be chock full of adventures that you'll swear were lifted from H. P. Lovecraft's mind--because they were! He left behind over 200 story ideas that we've read to create some of these cards.  Some adventures will have an X-Files and even Ghostbusters influence as well.
Modern (Criminals, Spies, & Superheroes)
Whether your campaign is focused on criminals, spies, or superheroes, this deck's adventures will have plenty of ideas you can use.  Turn a spy organization into a criminal operation or vice versa to switch an adventure between those genres.  Or give the foes super-powers to make the adventure fit a superhero setting. This deck will also have 50+ cards where each card is an adventure.
Sample PDF with two cards from each deck.

A QUIET PLACE Makes Some Box Office Noise on its Opening Weekend
A Quiet Place is a small horror film making some big noise in theatres around the world right now, enjoying a phenomenal opening weekend – if projected box office numbers are anything to go by. Early estimates are in the region of $50 million which is impressive by any measure, even more so when you factor in the films modest $17 million budget and subdued marketing campaign. These numbers only reflect its opening weekend domestically, factor in worldwide grosses and we could be looking at something quite remarkable. Only a handful of horror movies in recent history have made a similar level of impact on their opening weekend with M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village amassing $50.7m back in 2004, Paranormal Activity 3 amassing $52.5 million in 2011 and last year the runaway success of IT taking a staggering $123 million.
A Quiet Place is a new horror from Paramount Pictures, produced by Michael Bay and released via his Platinum Dunes imprint. A Quiet Place is co-written, directed and starring John Kransinski (The Office) and his real life partner Emily Blunt (Girl on a Train) as a young family who have to live in complete silence or face being the prey of creatures who hunt by the slightest sound. A very simple yet undoubtedly genius premise which is shocking that it has never been tapped into earlier.
The recent success of films like A Quiet Place, Get Out (Oscar nominated I hasten to add) and IT certainly signals a renewed vigor in the horror genre with the box office clout to back it up. It is a resurgence in mainstream success that we can only hope continues if the quality of the big screen horror offerings laid at our feet remains this high. A Quiet Place really does show that an incredibly simple premise, effectively written with an immensely talented cast can go a long way.

SUPER BIG NEWS: LEGEND OF NC DINOSAURS AND MONSTER BIRDS! Apparently my home state of North Carolina has become a hotbed for cryptozoological activity of the prehistoric survivor variety. This week The News & Observer - the second largest regional paper in NC - reported that a 20-year-old woman in the state capital of Raleigh spotted a pterosaur while waiting for the bus. The above drawing is her depiction of what she claims she saw. This story comes hot of the heels of NC being visited last year by the Japanese paranormal reality TV show What’s This? – Mysteries From Around the World which came for three days in September to hunt for an alleged plesiosaur in Lake Norman which is right outside Charlotte. Pterosaurs and plesiosaurs oh my! Though popularly depicted as a plesiosaur-type creature, the Lake Norman Monster - known affectionately as “Normie” - more closely resembles a large fish based on eyewitness sightings with the most popular candidate being an overgrown catfish. Nevertheless some witnesses have reported seeing a “dinosaur-type” creature in the lake as well. The most common rationale cited by cryptozoologists for the belief that Mesozoic marine reptiles inhabit certain lakes around the world is that these lakes are ancient. And indeed some of them are relatively speaking. Both Loch Ness in Scotland and America’s Lake Champlain - the homes of perhaps the two most famous lake monsters in the world - are both about 10,000-years-old and were formed at the end of the last Great Ice Age. Of course this still makes them far too young to be harboring any kind plesiosaur, the last of which died out 65-million-years ago. This problem is even more pronounced when it comes to Lake Norman which is a man-made lake created between 1959 and 1964 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy. Being only 50-years-old there’s no way that Lake Norman could be hiding anything prehistoric! So what accounts for the alleged sightings? If we rule out pranks and hoaxes, the most likely cause seems to be cases of mistaken identity. Deer are common in the Lake Norman and are often seen swimming in the lake. Also large snapping turtles - some big enough that they have occasionally been mistaken for alligators - reside there but despite occasional reports there are no confirmed cases of actual gators in Norman though they do live in NC and can be found in lakes closer to the coast like Lake Waccamaw. Surprisingly freshwater jellyfish do reside in Norman. There’s also the folklore factor. As argued by Michael Meurger in his 1989 book Lake Monster Traditions: A Cross-cultural Analysis (co-authored with Claude Gagnon) there is just something about large bodies of water that inspires people to make-up stories about them whether it be that such lakes are bottomless, hide buried treasure, are the final resting place of victims of unsolved murders or harbor a monster. It doesn’t matter if the lake in question is natural or man-made - in fact as pointed out by Benjamin Radford and Joe Nickell in their 2006 investigative study Lake Monster Mysteries, Lake Norman is far from the only man-made body of water in the US to allegedly contain a cryptid (p. 151). When it comes to Raleigh’s supposed pterosaurs, similar factors seem to be at work there as well in that we are once again dealing with the familiar phenomena of animal illiteracy. As paleontologist Darren Naish writes in his wonderful little book Hunting Monsters: Cryptozoology and the Reality Behind the Myths (2017), one of the side-effects of the widespread popularity of prehistoric animals is that depictions of creatures like pterosaurs are so pervasive that “a great many people… have some concept of what a pterodactyl is, yet are stunningly naive regarding the living animals that live on their own doorstep” (p. 184). This seems to be a perfect summation of the situation we have here. NC is home is a sizable number of large birds including cranes, storks, pelicans, spoonbills, osprey, several types of egrets, herons, hawks, owls, three types of ibis and two types of both vultures and eagles. I live about an hour outside Charlotte and have literally seen most of these birds in my own backyard. They are big and can easily startle people - especially when you open your curtains in the morning and find a crane standing a foot from your window, which is something that actually happened to my mom. But people who aren’t as familiar with the local wildlife or do as much backyard bird watching as I do may not be able identify these birds and think they are seeing a “flying dinosaur.” James Robert Smith, a friend and local author of several fantastic works of paleo-fiction including The Flock (2006) and Withering (2014, under the pen name Robert Mathis Kurtz), related the following story about just such a situation to me when discussing the recent flap of supposed pterosaur sightings…
One of my old friends saw a great blue heron in flight (he’d never seen one) and insisted that he’d seen a pterosaur. I kept trying to convince him that he’d only spotted a heron but he resisted. Finally, one day he saw it again and it landed and he admitted that it was “just a bird.”
Further complicating matters is that in covering this story The News & Observer reached out to creationist Jonathan Whitcomb about the sightings. The issue of creationism isn’t one I’ve addressed on this blog before despite the fact that I regularly deal with the topic seeing how I teach a class on the intersection of dinosaurs and religion. For anyone not familiar with the subject, paleontologist José Luis Sanz offers a sufficient definition of creationism in his book Starring T.Rex describing it as “a political instrument of religious fundamentalists… derived from a literal interpretation of the Bible… which denies any evolutionary dimension to life, the Earth, or the Universe.” (p. 79) Creationism isn’t a very old movement, with its origins in the late 19th-Century, but has nevertheless gained a lot of traction is certain Christian communities in the US. One of the chief claims of creationists like Whitcomb is that dinosaurs and man lived alongside one another (God made them on the same day after all) and that some dinosaurs - and dinosaur contemporaries like pterosaurs and plesiosaurs - are still around today. Whitcomb is particularly infamous for his 2006 book Searching for Ropens in which he argues for the existence of a giant (16 to 23 ft. wingspan) bioluminescent, grave-robbing pterosaur residing in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. Whitcomb actually traveled to Papua New Guinea where he collected alleged eyewitness sightings of the Ropen from locals. Many of these locals were Christian converts who appear to have been impressed by Whitcomb’s status as an “important” white missionary (how he fiancees these trips) from America and were eager to testify to him about their encounters with the Ropen which Whitcomb then reinterpreted as encounters with a pterosaur. I say “reinterpreted” because it’s pretty obvious from even just a cursory overview that the Ropen is actually a kind of demon or vampire from the indigenous folklore - the name literally means “demon flier” - that many of the local people still believe in despite - or more likely because of - their conversion to Christianity. According to The News & Observer, Whitcomb claims to have nine different alleged NC pterosaur sightings on file including this most recent Raleigh encounter. The News & Observer reprinted all of these sightings as part of their story and from reading them I’ll say it’s not entirely clear why anyone would seriously think these people had seen a prehistoric winged reptile. But then it’s not clear how on the level Whitcomb is either. One of his key pieces of evidence for the existence of modern-day pterosaurs is a photo of Civil War soldiers standing with a dead pterodactyl, a photo which is incontrovertibly known to be a film prop (not just the pterosaur the whole photo is a prop) made for and used in an episode of the TV series Freaky Links in the late 90s. Loren Coleman actually has the prop pterosaur hanging in his International Cryptozoology Museum in Main. Nevertheless Whitcomb dogmatically maintains the photo is real! Naturally I’d love it if my home state harbored living non-avian dinosaurs and related creatures but the prospect is more then unlikely. So I guess I’ll just have to be content with the multiple avian dinosaurs I get to see everyday in my own backyard. And for anyone who doesn’t “get” the joke which is this post’s title I explain it here.

London Cryptids
Here is a post (as requested) on various cryptid sightings in and around the city of London:
Spring-Heeled Jack
Spring-Heeled Jack is a Victorian folkloric figure, who was first reported in London in 1837. Despite Jack acquiring an almost mythological shroud of mystery, it was widely reported in newspapers at the time. Jack seemed to enjoy terrorising people, especially young women, who he was reported to kiss, molest and tear at their clothing. His interesting name came from his apparent ability to vault up to twenty feet in the air with no apparent effort, and was often seeing jumping over high walls, over roofs and sailing through the air over the tops of carriages. Jack’s physical description was generally similar in each eye-witness report. He was reported to have eyes ‘like balls of flame’, metallic-like claws on his hands, pointed features and was said to wear a helmet, a tight garment that resembled oilskin and a cloak. On one occasion he was said to have dressed like a policeman, presumably to gain entrance to the victim’s home. He was also reported to breathe out ‘blue flame’ into victim’s faces, which sometimes caused them to lose their sight and fall unconscious. This substance was interpreted to be a gas of some sort, as the victims never showed any visible burns. He was also heard to have a high-pitched shrieking cackle which was heard by many of the eye-witnesses as he bounded away.
Sightings of Jack continued throughout the nineteenth century, and it appeared that after a while he had left London, as reports of him steadily moved up the country. He was spotted at some barracks in Aldershot, also in Sheffield, Liverpool and Lincolnshire. Who or what Jack was is still unknown. Some has suggested he was simply a Victorian prankster, pointing the finger at the Marquess of Waterford, a known joker and brawler. It should be noted, however, that the Marquess died in 1859 in a riding accident, and sightings of Jack continued well into the 1870s, and some say even further. Others say the reports were simply a case of mass hysteria, and some that he was a ghost, demon or phantom. Others propose that he was some form of extra-terrestrial being, which may explain his eyes, (which rather than literally glowing may have been retro-reflective, like a cat’s), his odd ability to breathe blue flames, and if he came from a world with more gravity than ours, this may explain his incredibly jumping abilities. Reports of his bizarre behaviour and insane cackling laughter could also be attributed to being in an otherworldly environment not suited to his body, it is possible that our atmosphere had a different makeup to his own, and caused him to behave strangely.
Whatever the reality, Spring-Heeled Jack is an enduring and fascinating figure of London folklore, and will likely continue to fascinate us.

The Nameless Thing of Berkeley Square
The Nameless Thing was a bizarre and unclassified being which was said to haunt Number 50 Berkeley Square, London, in the 18th and 19th Centuries. In 1840, a student named Warboys heard rumours about the terrifying building and decided to investigate as a sceptic. He was given a room on the second floor by the guard of the property, and began his vigil, armed with a pistol and a candle. Around forty-five minutes later, the guard heard noises coming from the upstairs floor and the sound of the pistol rang out. He ran up to see what the commotion was, and found Warboys dead in the corner of the room, with nothing else in the room apparently changed. The expression on the dead man’s face convinced the guard that he had died of sheer terror. According to reports at least one other person, a sailor, died in the same manner while staying in number 50, and a survivor of a similar attack claimed he had shot the creature, and that it resembled some form of octopus, with slimy tentacles.
Such a bizarre tale is unusual in a suburban townhouse in London, and it has a distinctly Lovecraftian feel. Some have speculated that the creature was some form of ghost or demon, others that it was simply a made-up story to grab the headlines.

The Highgate Vampire
The height of the Highgate Vampire mystery was in the 1970s, when a mass vampire hunt was organised in an effort to rid Highgate Cemetery, London, of its terrifying occupant. Reports of a vampire or ghost in the cemetery had been present for a long time, and among others, reports of a tall grey figure, a gaunt face staring through the railings of the cemetery, voices calling out, and a spectral grey form abounded. Two years previous to the vampire hunt, the cemetery was desecrated and a body was found to have been disturbed in its coffin and staked through the heart, though the assailants were never identified. There were also reports of satanic rituals in the cemetery, with foxes found dead, their throats cut and drained of blood. It is these goings-on that prompted vampire hunters to believe that Satanists had roused a vampire from its slumber. Despite huge media coverage, the vampire hunt seemed to find nothing of consequence, although the ring leaders of the hunt claimed to have returned to the cemetery at a later date and disposed of the vampire’s corpse.

The River Thames Monster
The River Thames Monster is a serpent like creature, compared to the Loch Ness Monster, which was sighted in the River Thames near the O2 Arena in 2016. A video of the footage appeared on YouTube, and seemed to show, from a cable car, a double-humped creature slowly rising out of the water before disappearing once more into the murky depths. Some have speculated that the creature was a whale, dolphin or seal which had mistakenly swum up the estuarine Thames from the sea, others are adamant that the appearance of the creature is not consistent with any known animal and it therefore must be something paranormal or as yet undiscovered.

Camberwell Werewolf
In October 1996, a man was on his way to meet a friend in South East London, and decided to cut through the Old Camberwell Cemetery to make his journey quicker. He had no torch or any means of lighting, so he was only able to see a few feet in front of him. As he walked, movement caught his eye, and he saw what he initially believed to be a large dog, and it was then that he was apparently grabbed by the creature and pulled to the ground. The animal then leaned over him, growing and drooling onto his face. The man lay there, waiting for the creature to bite, but to his surprise it let him go and ran away into the darkness, and the eyewitness swears that he saw the creature run off on its hind legs. Although it was very dark, the close proximity of the creature allowed the eyewitness to describe some features of the beast. It was described as being muscular, with a face similar to a German Sheppard but the body more akin to a Great Dane, interestingly, he noted that he couldn’t see the eyes very well, and there was no eye-shine or glow usually associated with animals. Its breath reportedly had a smell of sweet, rotting fish. The eyewitness reported that when it grabbed him, he could clearly feel the fingers of a huge hand with long claw-like nails, it was not the paw of a dog. The eyewitness is said to have been extremely traumatised by the event, and now has a fear of woodlands and the dark, and has never dared to set foot in the cemetery since the event.

The Bat Beast of Kent
(Not strictly London, but near enough)
This reports begins in November of 1963 when four teenage friends were walking home from a party when they noticed a silent, glowing orb-like apparition descending from the sky. The object reportedly hovered above a field before it apparently moved towards some woodland and vanished into the trees of Sandling Park. Moments after the extraordinary UFO had apparently landed in the woodland, the youths then noticed a disturbance in the underbrush, and became aware of a bizarre creature shambling towards them. It was described by the eyewitnesses as a five-foot tall, headless bat like creature, with webbed feet and large wings protruding from its back. Its gait was apparently shambling, erratic and waddling. The group of friends, understandably terrified by their encounter, sprinted to the local police station, where they recounted their bizarre ordeal to sceptical police officers. A week or so later, another eyewitness came forward to corroborate the teen’s story, saying that he too, had seen an odd glowing craft hovering above the area on the same evening. Another eyewitness who went into the woodland after the event apparently came across some very strange footprints in the area, 24 inches long and 9 inches across.
While some have jumped to the conclusion that the creature must have been some kind of extra-terrestrial being, others have suggested the teens merely saw an oversized bird or a scarecrow, or had simply imagined it or made it up for attention.

Phantom Kangaroos
Perhaps this one is less of a mystery, there is no reason why a kangaroo which had escaped from a zoo or been let go by a private collector, could not survive in the UK. However, for the purposes of this collection, it can be classed as a cryptid, as locals had no idea how it got there, or why. In 2007, numerous reports of a large kangaroo in Lewisham, London, were made, including on a golf course and in people’s gardens. It was spotted by dog-walkers, park workers and golfers. It was even blamed for an attack on someone’s dog.

Monsterous Bat Creature
In the spring of 1922 reports were made of a horrifying apparition in West Drayton Cemetery, London. It was seen by eyewitnesses fleeing from a policeman, whereupon it took off into the air with a hideous screech. It was considered to be a form of vampire by the locals, and in 1938 on Thornton Heath in Surrey a woman was allegedly attacked by a similar winged phantom, which reportedly drew blood from her on three separate occasions.
