not going to lie, i kind of miss musical.ly. not only was the app a fun concept, it also marks an interesting time in internet history, emerging after the fall of vine and marking the beginnings of tiktok.

TLDR: brief history of musical.ly becoming tiktok with some of my personal viewpoints/bias/opinion thrown in. made for fun, not to be quoted

i particularly like musical.ly history as i joined the app in it’s early days, when it was popular enough to have “crowned” “musers” (verified system) but not too popular to be mainstream.

watching the app i joined as a joke in middle school become one of the most popular websites in 2021 used by millions of people is mind blowing to me.

when musical.ly turned into tiktok around 2018, it was a true cultural shift. dance content became pov memes and joke duets that eventually formed into tiktok as we know it today, with all it’s good and awful. but, of course, tiktok became tik-toxic (lol) as the disdain of “cringey” content started to take place often in comment sections. sadly ironic - the audience that has been accumulated - for an app that once favored and was known for fast speed lip-sync content.

we’re in different times now, but i hope within some’s disdain for “cringe” we do not lose sight of the place tiktok once was:

having thoughts about dnp saying the reason they wanted to write tabinof in the first place was to commemorate the era and give fans something to look back on and remember when they're older & how they consistently talked about the tatinof/tabinof era like it was an ending (or at least the end of their "peak")

the idea that in 2015!! they were preparing for their audience and community and their popularity to go away eventually so they wanted to create a physical reminder that "once upon a time there were these two guys called dan and phil who met each other on the internet who created this entire world"

it's like they were assuming the world of dan and phil and this community would be another trend and that their audience would lose interest in over time, especially after they'd just hit this massive peak. except it wasn't and we didn't

thinking about how that was almost 10 years ago and we're still here

#their trailer concept of an adult having tabinof in a dusty locked box when many of us still have it proudly displayed on a shelf #obviously they were right and 2015/2016 was their peak in pop culture but their emphasis was always the COMMUNITY not the fame #it was the world of dan and phil not how many views/subscribers #and like...idk dude feeling a lot of things about how the universe not only stayed intact #but has only gotten better #the community never left them and they didn't abandon the community and that is one of the most beautiful stories on the internet to me #i love them man
