Zukka AU where Sokka falls first, and Zuko denies every advance he makes on him.
Sokka’s like a love sick puppy. He trails behind Zuko everywhere he goes, always vying for his attention, always eager to please and impress him.
He’s constantly turned down, constantly put in the friendzone. Zuko hardly seems to tolerate his presence as a friend, let alone a lover.
But then, Zuko starts to feel it. He begins to keep a lookout for the Water Tribe boy, starts noting when he’s absent. And when Sokka pulls back with his affections, Zuko feels it like a knife in his chest. He misses his irritating jokes, misses his voice that’s always just a tad too loud.
He finds himself staring, every chance he gets. He seems to find him everywhere- the dining halls, the grounds, the training rooms. Whenever Sokka happens to turn and catch him staring, Zuko’s face turns hotter than the sun.
Zuko starts to fumble his words around Sokka, starts to fidget with his clothes. And it’s this that Sokka notices- at first, he thinks Zuko really doesn’t like him, since now he hardly says a word.
But then Sokka starts to catch Zuko staring more. He finds him stopping in his walks as he passes the training yard, immediately picking Sokka’s form out from the many. He stands still for a moment, half hidden behind a pillar, thinking Sokka can’t see the way he watches him, his lips parted slightly, his eyes soft, his expression open.
And still Zuko never makes a move. So Sokka makes one for them.
He strides up to him, the next time he catches Zuko longingly gazing from afar. Zuko sputters and fumbles, his cheeks painted the color of cherry blossoms as he tries to make an excuse for being so far from the throne room when there are meetings to be had.
Sokka hardly hears it. He grabs the front of Zuko’s robes and tugs, pulling him close as he crushes their lips together. Zuko makes a noise of surprise, and then Sokka is pulling back, a grin on his face.
“Well, I’ve gotta run- loads to do,” he says in a rush, knowing his departure will drive Zuko mad. He turns to leave, and Zuko’s hand darts out to grab onto his arm.
“Wait- I-“ Zuko clears his throat. His rosy cheeks have darkened in color, with a flush that covers his whole face. “I liked that.”
“I know,” Sokka says a grin. “I’ll see you later.”
He leaves Zuko there, his heart pounding and his mind reeling, wondering when the Water Tribe boy came to mean so much to him

zukka n 22 pls :)
22. a kiss in a rush of adrenaline.
"Sokka."
"I know."
"It's just that…if you don’t make it…”
"I know, Zuko."
"Sorry. You can do this. Win for me, yeah?"
Sokka spares a glance at him, seeing how he is worrying his bottom lip. Zuko meets his eyes, as if he can read Sokka's thoughts about Zuko's lips and his hands and his--
"Sokka!" Suki warns.
"Shit," Sokka curses, redirecting his attention to the television and glaring at the banana peel that his kart just ran into. "Sorry, uh, got distracted."
"Sokka just hit a banana peel," Zuko says, continuing his ongoing narration to Toph. "I think it's the one he planted during the last lap."
Toph lets out a cackle that Sokka chooses not to acknowledge, and out of the corner of his eye he sees Katara lean forward more. His palms feel sweaty. He's so close to gaining on her, he can't let Zuko down after Katara beat him in the last race. Funny, the fact that he could lose the pool of money reserved for the champion of their Mario Kart bracket doesn't seem to matter to him anymore.
"Katara is still in the lead but Sokka is catching up, they are approaching the finish line to start the final lap, they both just got a power-up..."
Sokka tunes him out as he crosses the finish line, focusing on the final lap, on beating Katara. He turns a corner, then another, then-
"Fuck," Katara mutters as she just barely misses the shortcut that Sokka takes, then she shouts, "Fuck!" when her position changes to 2nd and Sokka takes 1st. He doesn't dare let it distract him though, tries desperately to not get distracted by Zuko for once as his narration of the game gets louder from his excitement. Sokka just focuses on completing the rest of the track smoothly, dodging a shell that Katara sends his way, then-
"YES!" he and Zuko shout at the same time, Sokka jumping to his feet as Zuko chants, "He won, Sokka won!"
Suki and Aang cheer and Katara gets up to give her brother a firm congratulatory handshake and a smile that makes Sokka fearful of ever trying his luck a second time. He turns back to Zuko, finally letting himself fully bask in his smile and the way his eyes are wide and excited. He's on his feet, throwing his arms around Sokka so strongly that they nearly topple over, then Zuko is pulling back from the hug and Sokka's hands are grabbing his elbows to stop him from getting too far and he's leaning forward and-
Shocked silence falls over the room except for the music from Mario Kart and, after a few moments, Toph saying, "What?"
Zuko and Sokka are staring at each other in shock, Sokka's hands still frozen on Zuko and Zuko seeming unable or unwilling to step away.
"Uh, Sokka just kissed me," Zuko tells her. Toph cackles again.
"I did," Sokka says. It had barely been a kiss, just a peck really, but there was no denying their lips met. And he wanted it to happen again. But also... "Sorry, it was the adrenaline," he starts, but when Zuko's face falls Sokka grips his arms tighter. "Not like that! Like, I definitely wanted to kiss you, but I hadn't planned to do it just now, I was just excited and you were looking so-"
"Sokka, I will double my contribution to the money pool if you have this conversation literally anywhere else," Katara says, already going through the menu to start a new race, sounding way too unenthusiastic for someone who has been telling Sokka to make a move for months. Everyone else is still busy processing what just happened to say anything else; Aang's eyes are darting quickly between Zuko and Sokka, Suki is hiding a smile behind her hand, and Toph is smirking in their direction.
And, well, it's the push that Sokka needs as he grabs Zuko's hand and leads them toward the door to go for a walk and a conversation that has been a long time coming.

your favourite zukka moment/headcanon?
Hi!! I’m completely indecisive and incapable of choosing just ONE, so I have comprised a list!
Favorite Zukka moments:
The zoom in on Sokka grabbing Zuko’s arm and just…holding it there for a second in TBR????
The whole thing in the Southern Raiders episode where Zuko told a mediocre joke and Sokka laughed for way longer than everyone else then called Zuko his hero 😭
Of course, THE PRINCE AND THE FOOL
And lastly, a 3 in 1: that entire end scene of The Boiling Rock where Zuko pushed Sokka out of the way of fire, then jumped because he knew Sokka would catch him, and GRASPED Sokka’s hands for like a solid 45 seconds after saving him from falling off of the gondola (like ok Zuko….he’s safe now…..you can stop being gay now let go-)
Favorite headcaon;
#1 of course is that they raised Izumi together and became a sweet domestic family that gave her all the love and support they wished they received growing up <33
ZUKKA BETROTHAL ARMBANDS I GO FERAL
After the war ended, Sokka goes back and stays in the Fire Nation with Zuko for a bit so that he doesn’t feel so alone up in the palace (totally as buddies and good buds looking out for each other nothing more), and together they work towards remodeling the palace to make it a home. Let the light in, fill it with art, have a variety of colors, and build a little community with all the new ambassadors and staff (and obviously fall in love along the way). THEN after a while of Sokka taking trips back to the SWT, Zuko asks to go with him, and they say “fuck Firelord duties” and spend a lot of time down there. Zuko learns about their culture, and they all work to build the SWT back up again :)
Ok, I have so many more but I’m gonna leave it at that for my favorites! Thank you so much for this ask, I loved answering this question!!

Fav zukka fic of all time?
Ahhhh this is really hard. I haven't really read that many but I have like 4 or 5 that I constantly reread...
If I had to name an absolute favorite it's Will We Last the Night by CSHfic, VSfic !! Literally every zukka fan needs to read this fic. It's incredibly well written and paced. Personally I also think the characterization is so spot on like yeah this is all stuff Sokka would say. I also in general love long fics that flesh out how Sokka and Zuko come from enemies to friends and then bfs
My favorite scene has to be this one btw:
Azula scowled and moved to take a bending stance, but before she could the ground lurched violently. The force nearly threw Sokka to his knees. Zuko grabbed his arm to steady him as the conning tower plummeted several feet downward, the lift losing pressure as the steam escaped.
“Jump,” Sokka said, and Zuko was thick-headed, impulsive, and absolutely perfect, so he didn’t even hesitate, shoving Sokka backwards before Azula could even register the word.
They hit the deck hard, and it shuddered terrifyingly under their weight. He nearly lost his footing again, and somehow managed to keep it between Zuko’s vice-like grip on his arm and the adrenaline-fueled thundering of his heart.
I really want to draw out a lot of scenes from this fic but I have so little time realistically ! </3 Hopefully I get to it soon.

Hiiii about the zukka requests I would love if you wrote something with one of them being touchstarved!!!
sokka x zuko
a/n : HII thank you sm for the request!! I hope this turned out alright and that you enjoy it !! [ALSO i refer to their little group as team avatar throughout this but suki isn’t there don’t massacre me i just didn’t feel like thinking up explanations 🙏 they are in a polycule in my heart.  i just need self indulgent zukka hehe<3] warnings : none word count : 1108
Zuko hadn’t known what it was like to not be touch-starved since his mother was around. When she was gone, Zuko was quick to know warm arms and gentle touches had left with her. And so, he truly had not expected to find that type of affection when he joined Aang’s group. Not from Aang, thank god, and definitely not from Katara or Toph. Sure, there was the occasional hug, a hand on his back, or a punch which was supposed to be affection but really just left a Toph’s-fist-sized bruise on his arm. Instead, Zuko found those touches in Sokka, who very well may have been virtually the opposite of Zuko.
Maybe it shouldn’t have been surprising. Zuko could have guessed that when Sokka cared, he cared with his entire heart--he saw the way he’d protect his friends, and how he interacted with them when their lives weren’t in immediate danger. Sokka was a close person, and Zuko had gathered that it was how he was raised and just… how he was. He’d seen the Southern Water Tribe families, and seen just how familial they were (nothing like his household, he used to think to himself with contempt; now, it was nothing but heartwarming). He just never expected Sokka could be that way with him.
Talking close, sitting close, a grip on his arm, a whisper that brought his face closer than Zuko had expected anyone from “Team Avatar” would be with him. And when Zuko had proven himself? God, no, when feelings Zuko were just certain weren’t reciprocated got spilled post-coronation?
Zuko thought he might die. An arm around his shoulder, grabbing his hand, pinching his face, a kiss? He’d be scared to admit it when it made his face warm, his skin tingle, his stomach butterfly-filled-- but Zuko needed that touch, more than he needed anything.
That’s why, after a few months of Sokka visiting the Southern Water Tribe, Zuko had felt more alone than he had in ages. Fire Lord duties could only distract him for so long. Unless he saw Uncle Iroh, who offered Zuko hugs upon arrival and departure, Zuko was without human touch after just having it back. That’s why, now that the “Team Avatar” was back together (and on a mini-vacation of sorts, courtesy of Zuko’s old house on the beach), Zuko could barely be seen apart from Sokka.
The reunion was sweet--they always were, for everyone. Aang’s odd slang that Zuko still didn’t understand, Katara’s politeness (that he knew was very limited), a punch or two from Toph, and countless hugs and hair-ruffles and face-pinches and kisses from Sokka.
And now, the day long over, three of their group fast asleep or preparing to be, Zuko had what he’d been wanting all day. Maybe it was selfish, but he was royalty, and royally in love. All he wanted was alone-time with his boyfriend, and, for once, getting what he wanted was the sweetest victory.
“Your hair’s gotten so long,” Sokka noted, interrupting the comfortable silence that had enveloped them since the rest of their friends opted to rest. His hands ran through Zuko’s hair, gently combing it and bringing a relaxing feeling that made Zuko practically purr like a contented housecat.
“Yeah, I guess… I had long hair throughout my childhood, so it feels… right. I don’t really notice it.”
“It looks nice! When it’s up in your highness’ hairdo, you look juuust like a spoiled prince.”
Zuko knew that was a teasing tone, and felt himself grinning when Sokka placed his hands on his face, squishing him lightly. At one point, Zuko knew he wouldn’t have accepted teasing-- to respond to it with joy made himself feel proud, a pride he wasn’t ashamed of anymore.
“You grew your hair out too,” Zuko responded, rolling his eyes in an attempt to return the teasing. Reaching out, he ran a few fingers along the shaved sides of Sokka’s head, before reaching farther. Swiftly, Zuko yanked the tie from Sokka’s hair, letting it fall loose.
Sokka laughed a bit, “Yeah, it got pretty long, so I was like ‘sure, why not, keep it.’”
“It looks nice.” Zuko’s tone was genuine, and had such admiration in it that Sokka felt as though he had been caught off-guard. “I, uhm,” Zuko continued, coughing a bit. It was his turn to feel flustered, not sure why he wanted to say this. Sokka’s honesty seemed to rub off on Zuko, on top of how comfortable Sokka made him feel. Like he wanted to tell him anything and everything, but never had the words (or sociability). “I missed you. It feels like I haven’t, uh… had a hug in ages. It sounds stupid, but you’re the only person who ever gets close to me.”
Sokka’s face grew red, a flustered laugh leaving his mouth. “I missed you too, man. I’ve missed being close to you,” He spoke, bringing his hands to squish the sides of Zuko’s face together once more. With Zuko’s face squished, Sokka placed a silly kiss on his puckered lips. “Calling your boyfriend ‘man’ doesn’t sound right, you know,” Zuko responded, taking a moment to fight the flustered feeling he always got around Sokka, especially when they’d kiss.
“Sorry, your Fire Lord-iness, I’ll be sure to call you more romantic names.”
Despite the teasing, Sokka let go of Zuko’s face, pulling him in for a hug instead. Though Zuko wanted to complain about the names, he instead found his mind faltering, as his head landed softly against Sokka’s shoulder.
“What are you doing?” Zuko questioned, though he didn’t make any attempts to move. “Uhh, hugging you? Didn’t you just say you missed me being close to you?”
Zuko knew that wasn’t exactly what he said, but… he wasn’t going to argue. Not when it was true. Not when having someone show him that they cared like this felt so comforting, so reassuring, like he couldn’t deny that Sokka was real, he was there because Zuko could feel it was true. Sokka’s hands were quick to find their places, one on Zuko’s back and the other in his hair, massaging its way into his scalp, then gently combing the hair out.
Zuko had thought himself at ease already, but Sokka’s loving ministrations seemed to coax him into a relaxed state he hardly knew. His heart felt full, and his skin felt warm with contact.
“Thanks, Sokka,” He mumbled, hardly wanting to move enough to talk properly. All he wanted was this moment--this boy. Zuko could hear the smile in Sokka’s voice, “Yeah. You don’t need to thank me, really-- I like being near you.”

okay guys thinking about touch during the second half of book 3 with zukka like… sokka seems like a very touchy-feely person but only with people he knows and people he trusts, and zuko doesn’t understand touch in any way but revels in it. at the start, zuko is awkward and hesitant, patting sokka’s shoulders at the wrong time, not knowing when to go in for a hug or how to go in for a hug, and then at the boiling rock, there’s so much touching. they’re forced to be in such close proximity, and sokka grabs his arm, his hands, and zuko grabs his shoulder, his hands, and touching seems like a no brainer. sokka doesn’t want to let go, zuko doesn’t want to let go. it sets in for zuko that this was a suicide mission, and he wants to touch sokka as much as possible because touching sokka feels like touching the sun, and then the boiling rock is gone but sokka is still there. sokka trusts him now, hesitantly, but he trusts him and he’s always there, grabbing zuko’s arm, pulling him in for one armed hugs, and zuko doesn’t know how to deal with it so he tries to reciprocate and he feels okay, through sokka he feels able to touch and hold again because it had been so impossible before, and sokka learns to be comfortable around him… very normal about zukka touching

🌩️🌧️🌪️ please!
Thanks for the ask @stardust948!!
🌩️ Share something funny/cracky from your WIP.
“So, what’s here that you want to show us?” Zuko asked.
“This.” Sokka grabbed Zuko’s hand and brought him to a hole in the side of a snow hill.
There was nothing down that either sibling could see. Zuko knelt down, lighting a flame in his hand and bringing the flame to the entrance of the hole but even that didn’t show them anything.
“The dark tunnel that no one will come out of alive?” Zuko asked.
“No. It’s a slide. Years ago, waterbenders made an ice slide for kids to go down and have some fun while their parents worked on hunting animals.” Sokka explained, “It’s so much fun! Our mom brought us here all the time when we were younger.”
“Yeah, there is no way we’re going down that.” Zuko said.
“What? Why?” Sokka asked.
“Because we like living.”
🌧️Share something angsty from your WIP.
“Mom told me to hide.” She sobbed.
Hakoda held his eight year old daughter close, more happy that she was safe and alive than anything else, “You did. You did so good. I’m so proud of you.”
“Where’s mom?” Katara had asked, “I heard yelling.”
Hakoda didn’t answer, just held her close and brought her downstairs. Katara spoke with the police and Hakoda set her down on the porch step, telling her not to move.
Ten minutes later, their grandmother and Sokka pulled up. The police were almost done but they did decide to ask Kanna a few questions. Meanwhile, Sokka ran straight to Katara, hugging her tightly.
“I want mom.” Katara sobbed into her brother’s shirt.
“Me too.”
Hakoda, noticing his crying children, went over and wrapped them up in his arms, “It’s going to be okay. I promise, everything is going to be okay.”
🌪️Sum up a WIP with a few fic tropes/Ao3 tags.
I'll do my dragon!Azuatar/Zukka fic - Found family, hurt/comfort, alternative universe, friends to lovers, happy ending, spirit shenanigans, princess/peasant, prince/peasant

Zukka Week Day 3: Rivals
For @zukkaweek
It starts innocuously. Of course it does.
Iroh challenges Sokka to a game of Pai-Sho. “Indulge an old man,” he says. Sokka’s many things but he’s not, like, a complete fucking asshole, so he accepts. Besides, Pai-Sho sounds interesting.
Iroh proceeds to wipe the floor with him over and over. “It is a matter of experience,” he says, even as he moves a tile and neatly wins another game. “I have simply done this longer. But you are an excellent player yourself.”
“You beat me in two moves last time,” Sokka mutters. “Two moves.”
“Ah, but the game before that had me on the ropes. You have a keen mind and a good eye.” Iroh looks around. “Much better than my nephew,” he whispers with a wink. Sokka looks at him, an idea popping into his head.
-
“Zuko!” Sokka calls, and Zuko whips around, startled. “What? Is something wrong?”
“Yes!” Sokka screeches. “It’s an emergency!” Zuko nods. “Lead the way.” Sokka grabs him by the hand and drags him to his room, and flings the door open. “There,” he points, and Zuko follows his finger to the Pai-Sho board set up on his desk. “Sokka,” he says, slowly. “What is this?”
“You have to play Pai-Sho with me. Now!” Zuko looks at him, expression a complicated mixture of shock and confusion and anger. “This is the emergency?”
“Yup! Now play!”
“Sokka,” Zuko says, teeth gritted. “I have things to do. I don’t have time for Pai-Sho. You can ask my uncle, he loves Pai-Sho.”
“You don’t understand, Zuko, I have to play with you! I’ve already played with your uncle, and… well…” Zuko’s expression shifts to one of sympathy, but only for a second. “I still can’t help you, Sokka. I’m really busy. Why not ask Aang?”
“Aang’s busy too.” Too busy mooning over his sister, Sokka doesn’t say. He loves them both, but they’re just so… oogie!
“Toph?”
“She told me to fuck off.”
“Suki?”
“She’s with her Kyoshi warriors. I don’t want to disturb her.”
“Well then, I’m sorry.”
Sokka sighs. It’s time to bring out the big guns.
“Pleeeeease?” Sokka opens his eyes wide, jutting his lip out. Zuko stares at him. “Sokka, I-“
“Pleeeeeease?”
To his credit, Zuko lasts one second longer than the last time before he folds like a piece of paper.
-
The game starts, and Zuko keeps it up for all of twenty seconds before he loses spectacularly. So quickly and thoroughly that Sokka suspects it’s intentional. “Oh well,” Zuko says. “I lost. I’m going now.”
“What? No! You- you did that on purpose!”
Zuko smirks. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Sokka sighs, crossing his arms sullenly. “I mean, I guess Iroh did say you were bad at it, but not by this much.” That makes Zuko pause in the act of standing up to leave. “Uncle said that?” Sokka blinks at him, a light going off in his head. “Yeeeaaah,” he drawls. “He did say that. I guess he was right, huh?”
Zuko looks at him, and Sokka can see a battle in his eyes. His pretty, golden eyes-
Huh?
‘What the fuck was that?’ Sokka wonders, but his thoughts are interrupted by the scrape of the chair as Zuko sits back down. “I can play one more game,” Zuko says, and Sokka cracks his knuckles. “Prepare to be destroyed again!”
Zuko wins, and it is not close.

In His Arms
TickleTober 2022, Day 6: Cuddles
i bet you can guess what i’m gonna say lol. this is unedited!
-----
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Ship(s): Zukka
Characters (lee/ler): Lee!Zuko/Ler!Sokka
Word Count: 402 words
Summary: Zuko's been a bit stiff while cuddling. Sokka tries to convince him to relax.
[ao3 link]
---------------
“You’re so stiff,” Sokka grumbled. “It’s like trying to snuggle a plank of wood.”
Zuko huffed and grumbled out, “It’s not my fault.”
He’d always been like this, as long as he could remember. Stiff with hugs, stiff with affection, stiff while standing. He just wasn’t good at the whole “relaxing” thing. Why would he relax when he might need to be on his feet within seconds, running or fighting for his life? Sokka was lucky Zuko had bothered to even take his shoes off, this time. He was just sick of Sokka grumbling about dirt in the blankets.
They literally slept on the ground most nights, in the dirt. What was the point?
Sokka groaned and jostled Zuko, grabbing the shoulder furthest from him and shaking it a little. “Loosen up. Even Toph would be a better cuddle buddy than this.”
“Toph would kick you out before you could get within five feet.”
Sokka paused a moment. “Would you at least kiss it better?”
Zuko scoffed. “After you called me stiff as a board?”
Sokka pressed his pout against Zuko’s neck. “If Toph kicked you out, I would kiss it better.”
Zuko rolled his eyes. Sokka huffed a put-out breath against his neck, and Zuko couldn’t help the shiver that ran through him, the way his tense body instinctively tried to jerk away. Sokka went eerily still. Sokka was never still.
“Don’t you dare–”
“I think I know how to help you relax.”
“Sokka–”
Zuko didn’t get to finish his protest. Instead, he had to slap both hands over his mouth to muffle his mortifying giggles. If he was going to be made a fool, he didn’t need the rest of the Gaang as witnesses. Sokka nuzzled into his neck, huffing out quiet breaths and utilizing his lips where he saw fit. Meanwhile, Sokka’s hands started sneaking around Zuko’s body, seeking out weak points. Unfortunately, the disadvantage of being so on-edge all the time was that his body and mind got tired, and a tired body and mind didn’t have the energy to keep from flinching when those weak points were reached.
As Sokka snickered against his neck, Zuko resigned himself to his fate. Even if this didn’t get him to relax, it would at least help him get a good night’s sleep. And a good night’s sleep in Sokka’s arms was a win in Zuko’s book, playful torment and all.

Six Sentence Sunday
Thanks for the tags @wellbelesbian (I cannot wait to see where you take your CODW fic) and @youarenevertooold!
So the other day I made this post about a zukka headcanon, and I was inspired to write a little thing! Six paragraphs because rules are meant to be broken.
Sokka makes it to the hospital and pushes through the doctors and Kyoshi warriors to get to Zuko’s side, tossing his cane to the floor with a clatter, knees protesting as he drops to the hard floor and grabs Zuko’s hand. Tears cloud his vision, slipping down his face when he blinks.
Zuko is so still, hair spread out on the pillow in a halo around him. Bruises litter his face and neck. His betrothal necklace is lopsided. His left arm is in a sling.
Distantly, he registers Ty Lee making it to the hospital, doubling over and bracing her hands on her knees. She winces and sits down, starting to check on joints that he assumes subluxed during the fight.
Suki comes over to him, kneeling next to him and touching his shoulder gently.
“He’ll be okay, Sokka. His shoulder was dislocated; all his other injuries are minor. We got very lucky. I’ll tell you about the rest later.”
The weight of the situation finally crashes down on Sokka, and he breaks down, not letting go of Zuko’s hand as he collapses into Suki and sobs into her shoulder.
Ty Lee has EDS and Sokka has chronic pain because Yes.

Hi jo! Fluff dialogue prompt: “I feel safe with you.” and “where's my goodnight kiss?” With zukka, please :)
It’s written all over Zuko’s face. Maybe not to someone who doesn’t have as much history with him, but to Sokka it’s clear as day. The bags under his eyes slightly more pronounced than usual, the worried crease in his forehead, the tightness in his smiles and posture...
If he had known, he wouldn't have spent the first two hours of the party avoiding Zuko. As soon as they make eye contact, though, Sokka's feet take him to Zuko without hesitation.
“Zuko,” Sokka frowns, and his resolve almost crumbles at the way Zuko wilts just slightly. They're in a large room in the palace that they only use for gatherings like this, and Zuko looks around quickly before grabbing Sokka by the elbow and leading him closer to the wall to give them a little bit of privacy.
“I didn’t want to worry you,” Zuko says quietly.
Sokka shakes off his hand. “Fuck that. When was it?”
Zuko sighs, looking around again. “Two weeks ago.”
"Zuko—" Sokka starts again.
“I would rather tell you in person. Besides, it’s safer that way.”
Sokka knows he’s right, and he’s glad he’s here now, but he’s not happy with it. He doesn't get to dwell on that now, though. With Zuko’s back to the rest of the room, he’s letting down the mask of a perfectly happy and healthy Fire Lord, and Sokka has a feeling this assassination attempt was really bad.
“It was close, Sokka. Too close,” Zuko says, reading his mind, and he looks scared like Sokka hasn’t seen him in a long time. Fear freezes his chest, but he pushes it down, the familiar urge to always be the strong one rising up instead.
“Can we get out of here?” Sokka asks, suddenly anxious that they are in such a crowded place. He glances around and finally notices the extra security, most of them disguised, but it doesn’t help his nerves much.
Zuko nods, looking grateful, and Sokka doesn’t leave his side as he goes to talk to a guard, who nods. It’s not the smartest idea, the two of them leaving such a crowded party side by side. It’s sure to rekindle a rumor or twelve, but Zuko doesn't seem bothered by it for once, so Sokka allows himself this considering it's taking everything in him to resist giving into the urge to hold Zuko’s hand.
They’re met by more security in the hallway, following them all the way to Zuko’s rooms. Sokka doesn’t recognize them, but Zuko must trust them to see them together and to stand guard outside his rooms once they make it there. There’s not a question about it, Sokka follows him inside and closes the door behind them.
Zuko’s hands are shaking, and when he turns to Sokka in the privacy of his room, he immediately rushes into his arms. Sokka holds him tightly, reassuring himself that Zuko is okay, that he’s alive.
"I almost—"
“You didn’t,” Sokka says firmly. “You’re okay. Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not right now. I just want you to stay,” Zuko says softly. “I feel safe with you.”
Sokka nods immediately. “Of course.”
When they pull back, Sokka realizes how exhausted Zuko looks. He can barely keep his eyes open as he pulls out his head piece, and Sokka wonders how much sleep he's gotten in the last two weeks. Wordlessly, they agree that Zuko just needs to rest, and Sokka sits down on the bed and pointedly turns away as Zuko changes out of his stuffy Fire Lord robes, fingers twitching with the desire to help him. He doesn't, and when Zuko is done he sits down next to Sokka, keeping some distance between them.
"Thank you for being here," Zuko says softly.
"Of course," Sokka says, giving him a tight smile. "I'm always here for you. Zuko, I-"
Sokka nearly jumps out of his skin when the tension is broken by a nearby thud, but Zuko just grabs his hand. "It's just Druk," he reassures him.
It's just my ten foot dragon isn't as comforting as Zuko thinks it is, but Sokka doesn't say anything, just moves out of the way as the dragon crawls out from where he had apparently curled up under the giant bed.
"He's been sleeping in here since the attempt," Zuko explains, looking slightly sheepish. "I'll just..."
He stands, leading Druk to another door in the room, because knowing Zuko, Druk has his own personal suite for occasions like this when there are guests in the palace. Before closing the door, though, Zuko pets the top of the dragon's head and leans down to kiss the top of it, saying, "Goodnight, Druk."
When he turns back to Sokka, the two of them actually alone this time, Sokka blames the fondness in his chest for the words that slip out of his mouth. “Where’s my goodnight kiss?”
At the weighted look that Zuko gives him, he processes what he just said. He doesn’t take it back, though. He doesn’t say anything, just watches as Zuko walks up to him, stepping between Sokka’s legs and forcing Sokka to tilt his head up to maintain the intense eye contact. He moves slowly, giving Sokka every opportunity to stop him.
Sokka doesn’t, his eyes falling shut as Zuko's lips finally meet his.

Hungover mornings with Zukka<3
The pounding on the door broke the silence, causing Sokka to wince, pulling the pillow over his ears. He requested this day off for a reason, nobody is getting in the way of him and his all-day nap. Maybe if he holds his breath and doesn’t respond, the stranger will just walk away.
But the door knob jiggles, rattling as the person tries to open it. He groans, clutching his head. If this was an assassin, he would be royally toasted. He has no strength to even move the blanket closer around him, shivering from the exposed air on his very naked body. Why is he naked? He doesn’t really know either. He thinks down the line he tossed off all his clothes, most likely got soaked with more alcohol.
The voice called out, saying a few dotting words, but it was all mumbled to him. He couldn’t possibly comprehend what someone could say to him unless they were screaming in his ear.
But then, the door opens, cursing Sokka and his exposed skin to more cold air. He shivers, curling his body up into a ball. He needs another blanket, stat.
Sokka doesn’t open his eyes as the intruder walks in, no energy in doing so. He just hopes they actually aren’t assassins. He curses at his past self, forgetting to lock his door last night.
But a hand reaches out, grabbing the blanket that’s pooled by his stomach, and gently lays it over Sokka some more. It covers him up better, but he’s still quite cold. He can’t tell why he’s freezing so much, since he was born and raised in arctic terrain.
The warm hand’s fingers card through Sokka’s hair, making him sigh in ecstasy and lean into the touch.
“Sokka,” the voice says, sounds quite familiar and disappointed, “Why are you naked on the floor?”
Sokka groans, that explains why it’s so cold.
He begrudgingly opens his eyes, squinting up at the mysterious intruder. To his delighted surprised, he’s met with colorfully warmed gold eyes, and a slight croaked smile. Zuko.
Sokka tries to reach out a hand to touch his boyfriends face, but winces at the cold air. He shivers back into a ball, pulling his limbs into himself.
“‘Cause…” Sokka states, pouting, “my clothes got gross.”
“So you decided to strip and lay on the cold tile, naked?” Zuko questions him.
Sokka looks away, curling his head underneath, so he can go back to trying to take a nap. “Yes.” He answers, not elaborating anymore.
He hears his firebender sigh, before there’s two warm hands touching him. One underneath his shoulder and another under his legs. Sokka grumbles, whining as the blanket is moved slightly off of him.
In a split second, he’s lifted off the cold ground and into the arms of his boyfriend’s. He gasps, wincing as he’s being moved. His head is dizzy and the sudden movement makes his head spin. He whimpers and mewls as he’s being manhandled.
“Shhh, you big baby. It’s okay,” Zuko coos at him. He walks over to the massive queen size bed that Zuko bought Sokka, decorated with furs and water tribe patterns. He gently lays sokka in the bed, watching at his nonbender curls back up into a ball and lean into Zuko’s warm touch. Zuko smiles, rubbing his fingers though Sokkas hair. There’s little knots that need to be undone, but for the most part it’s neat. The courting braid he made Sokka is still in his hair, never messed up. Zuko runs his index finger over it, playing with the bead at the end.
“Zukooo…” Sokka whines into the sheet, making grabby hands with his boyfriend.
The firebender laughs at him. “Sokkaaa…” he mimics and sits next to him on the bed.
He gently grabs hold of Sokka’s arm pits, lifting partially of his body into Zuko’s lap. Sokka hums, as he places his head down on Zuko’s shoulder. Zuko rubs endless circles onto his back, some traces will make sokka squirm as it tickles him. But Sokka relaxes into his heat, digging himself a nice spot situated on his lap.
“Penguin, how much did you drink last night?” Zuko gently asks, as he counts the freckles on Sokka’s face. He pinches the baby fat on Sokka’s cheek, who weakly tries to swat his hand away.
“Dunno, Ty Lee and I played a drinking game,” he groans, shuffling his head closer into Zuko’s neck. “Tell me to never drink with her again.”
Zuko chuckles, looking down at him. He forgets how much of a lightweight Sokka truly is. One sip of alcohol and he’s done for. But, in all honesty, Zuko finds it to be on the list of adorable things about Sokka.
“You know there’s no stopping her,” Zuko says. He looks down at Sokka, who’s on the verge of consciousness and sleep.
“I was away for one night, and I heard from Mai that you and Ty Lee decided to throw a party while I was gone,” Zuko says, raising an eyebrow.
Sokka shake his head weakly, denying it. “No party. Just fireball, lots and lots of fireball.”
Fireball?” Zuko looks at him in shock. “Baby you know you shouldn’t drink that stuff, it’s too strong for you. Last time you drank it you were vomiting all day. Remember I dragged you to the physician.”
Sokka nods, crouching his head down as Zuko lectures him. “I know, it was stupid. I’m sorry, but Ty Lee brought it along last night and I couldn’t find myself saying no…”
There’s a pregnant pause, before Sokka cuts the silence. “I really want seal jerky…”
Zuko laughs.
“I think we have some left down in the kitchens, can I go grab you some?” He replies. Sokka in returns clutches onto Zuko’s shirt, holding him closer.
“Noooo…” Sokka grumbles, “don’t leave. Let’s sleep. Sleep sounds good.”
“Alright then, we can nap. But you need something for your head and you need to drink water. Do you want to do that now or later?”
“…Now” Sokka replies.
Zuko shuffles, gently moving forward. He tries to lift Sokka off his lap, but his boyfriend starts to whine at the lost contact. “I gotta get your medicine, Penguin. I’ll be right back.
Sokka huffs, letting go of his grip on Zuko. He lets himself be dropped on the bed, curling back into his ball. Zuko grabs the heavy comforter, draping it over his lover. He tucks him in tightly, barely enough room for sokka to move in. He looks like a mess between a pile of sheets crossed with a caterpillar. He smiles, laying down a kiss on Sokka's forehead, who’s already seemingly gone back to sleep.

a gift with duel meaning
in which zuko commissions a second meteor sword for sokka’s birthday. There will inevitably be pining! Post-canon Zukka.
AO3 Link!
“It’s not right, is it?”
Sokka cleared his throat softly, still not willing to let his ungloved hand touch the metal. With the other, his fingernail scraped a line down the sword. He brought his ear to the blade softly and rapped at it with covered knuckles. Twice. As if this were a bittermelon and he wanted to see if it was ripe at the market.
“Sokka. You can be honest.” Zuko stepped back. “Is it okay?”
“How did you do this?” Sokka grinned and set the sword down slowly. He grabbed at his single glove, letting it fall before he barreled into Zuko and hugged him.
“Oof! I… may have found you another meteor?”
“You!” Sokka sniffed and tried not to lose (any more of) his composure. This was a gift. This was a birthday gift. He could not cry; Zuko would tense up and three-quarters of his vocabulary would vaporize from the portion of his brain that controlled his speech. Zuko did not know how to handle crying boys. Zuko was barely capable of grasping his own emotions, much less those of his friends. “You did what?”
“I -” Zuko sighed, holding Sokka in his arms, “I still can’t tell if you like it.”
“You made me another meteor sword? Oh, you beautiful, resplendent man!” Sokka didn’t pull his gaze away to look at the sword on the table (even if it had fucking dragons carved into the metal-!!!!) but he could’ve mentioned the carvings if he wanted to. It would’ve made the compliment more unique.
“Well, not made- I didn’t make it -”
“Personally commissioned, yeah, yeah, whatever-” Sokka would not cry. He would not tempt fate. Never mind the fact that he’d teared up when he’d gotten a splinter in his pointer finger chopping wood two nights before, and wept openly last month at a moving performance of The Silver Peach Blossoms because the third act had that one song about the little boy who wanted to please his mother and-
“You didn’t,” Sokka murmured. “No way you actually did this. No, this is another dream.” He squeezed his arms tighter around Zuko’s waist. He could savor this moment as long as he held it in his hands, as if it were a pearl untouched by soot and grime and age. It would be his moment 一 their moment 一 to cherish, ethereal and soft, hanging in the balance as the boys stood in the palace room.

“I told you jumping right back into training after a break was a bad idea,” Zuko teased, staring down at his miserable Water Tribe boyfriend sprawled out across his bed. Well, no matter if he was given a guest room, Sokka being around meant it wasn’t really “the Fire Lord’s bed” anymore. It was “Sokka’s bed (plus Zuko).”
“Don’t scold me,” Sokka groaned, pouting slightly, “can’t you see I’m dying? Horribly? And you’re just gonna make fun of me while my arms fall off.”
“I’d never make fun of you… if your arms actually fell off.”
Sokka groaned again, loudly and dramatically (as his entire personality was), moving his leg to kick Zuko, who dodged it swiftly. “Your kicking is almost as bad as your swordsmanship.”
“Hey, don’t say that! I’ll kick your ass after I get another warmup.”
“Like you kicked my ass yesterday?” Zuko questioned, reminding Sokka of the training session that has left his arms and shoulders immobile. When no response, other than a very pointed glare, came, an idea formed in Zuko’s mind. Honestly, he didn’t like seeing Sokka hurt, but he was no stranger to sore muscles, lotion on his bedside table a reminder of that.
“Here, sit up,” Zuko ordered, grabbing the bottle of lotion, and taking a spot on the bed. Sokka raised an eyebrow, sitting up, and watching as Zuko dumped a bit of the lotion onto his palm.
“Tell me if it hurts too badly,” Zuko stated, before smoothing the lotion across Sokka’s left arm. Zuko’s hands, somehow both refined and masculine, massaged Sokka’s aching muscles, causing the boy to furrow his eyebrows and heave a sigh. He worked the muscles with a firm love, making sure to take glances at Sokka’s expressions in case the massaging was doing more harm than good. Much to his content, Sokka’s expression never turned to one of too much pain--instead, Sokka made sure to tell Zuko that he appreciated the actions. Zuko didn’t mind, of course, he’d take any excuse to have his hands on Sokka’s muscled arms.
“Gaahh, you’re the best, the best ever,” Sokka spoke, as Zuko’s hands moved from Sokka’s other arm to his shoulders. “I love you so much.”
Zuko’s heart fluttered, a smile spreading on his face. “I love you too,” He responded, a slight chuckle in his voice, “I’m glad to be the best. Especially since I’m also the best swordfighter.”
“Get your hands off of me, mister Fire Lord. I want nothing to do with your monarch-iness.”
Chuckling again, Zuko wrapped his arms around Sokka’s sides, placing his head on his shoulder. “I guess I’ll never help you after practices again,” He sighed, biting back his smile and puckering his lips into a pout. Instead of responding, Sokka leaned back, causing the two of them to lay back on the bed.
“You don’t mean that,” Sokka said, copying Zuko’s pout, and looking up at him with his big, blue eyes.
“Hm… yeah. You’re right.”
Sokka grinned, adjusting himself to lay on his stomach, moving to be halfway on Zuko. “Really, thank you though. My arms feel better,” Sokka praised, stretching out an arm, then draping it over Zuko’s chest.
“I’m glad… are you going to get up?”
“Whaaaatt? No, I’m asleep. Don’t you know rest is so important in healing? You want your boyfriend to get worse?”
Zuko blinked, not bothering with a response. He moved a hand to play with Sokka’s hair, another resting on his upper arm, rubbing his thumb lightly against the skin. Sokka hummed happily, closing his eyes and nuzzling further into Zuko.
