Bir mektup vardı. Yazıp yazıp silinmiş. Bazı yerleri karalanmış ve kenarları yıpranmıştı. Sonundaki üç noktaya bakıp ağlamak istedi. Fakat ağlayamıyordu. Mektubun boş kalan satırları gibiydi. Belirsiz ve hissiz bir acının içinde demir gibi dövülüyordu. Yırtıp atmak istedi mektubu fakat yapamadı. Lakin nereye gönderecek bir yerde yoktu. O meşhur adressiz ve sahipsiz mektuplardandı. Hastalığı baş göstermeye başladı. Kalbi titriyordu. Üstünde dayanılmaz bir ağırlık vardı. Mektubu katlayıp zarfa koydu. Bunu neden yapıyordu onu da bilmiyordu. Zarfa bile gerek yoktu. Belki de mektubu yıllar sonra hala yaşıyor olursa gelecekteki kendine yollamalıydı. Tekrar hatırlamanın bir faydası mı var diye sorabilirlerdi elbet. Ama bu açıklanamaz bir şeydi. Yorgun adımlarla masadan kalktı ve odayı yalnızlığına bıraktı.

What is a zarf?

A zarf is a holder for a coffee cup without a handle. Traditionally, it is made of ornamental metal, but in recent years has been produced from disposable materials for coffee served in cardboard cups. The corrugated carboard zarf was invented in 1991.

When coffee became popular in Turkey around the 13th century, it was served in small cups without handles known as fincans. To protect the drinker's fingers from the hot liquid, the cups were placed in a zarf. The cups were made from either porcelain, glass or wood but did not have any distinguishing features. Instead, the zarf, which was more visible, was typically heavily ornamented.

The zarf was often made from metal and decorated with silver, gold, copper, or brass. More expensive zarfs were made from ebony, ivory, bone or tortoiseshell. Some were also decorated with engravings and precious stones.

During the 19th century, sets of zarfs were popular across the Islamic world. During the 19th century, Enamel workshops in Europe produced large quantities of identical zarfs to sell in Islamic and Asian markets. These were usually decorated with coloured enamel and motifs such as musical instruments or military trophies.

Wooden zarfs were also popular because the heat of the drink helped release the natural aroma of the wood. Unfortunately, very few examples remain because they were very fragile.
