Hello! I love your meta-analysis of BG3 and share many of the same opinions concerning our boy, Gale. I have an interesting question for you concerning the orbs "volatility" in relation to intimacy (both physical and non-physical). I used to believe it was cannon that Gale couldn't engage in physical intimacy because the Orb may detonate, but when I played as Gale I was able to sleep with Astarion. This is in contrast to when I played as Karlach and couldn't touch anyone.

So, all of this is to ask whether Gale's dialogue at the tiefling party was him protecting himself emotionally or if he truly thought that any excitement would trigger the Orb (ironic given they are fighting for their lives daily)? Additionally is this why the Weave scene only features an imagined kiss rather than a physical one?

gale: with my condition being as volatile as it is, i fear any undue, er, excitement, may tip it over the edge. so to speak.

i do believe that gale was being honest in regards to avoiding physical/emotional excitement concerning the orb. his first and foremost priority is to make sure to avoid as many potential triggers as possible, being fully aware of the catastrophe that will occur if he doesn’t keep an eye on his condition at all times. fighting is inevitable given the situation the group found themselves in. on top of that, every single day for the past year alone has quite literally been a life or death situation for him, wondering how much longer he can hold on until the orb inevitably takes over. i also think that he has experienced his fair share of horrors and tough fights in his past, considering his status as an archmage, as well as him being mystra’s chosen. even with his now diminished powers & the tadpole in his head he still remains in his element. magic is his life, it comes as easy to him as breathing.

gale: i'm what one might call a wizard prodigy, who from an early age could not only control the weave, but compose it, much like a musician or a poet.

more importantly, the devnotes also proof that the orb is indeed the reason for his deflection during the tiefling party:

gale: i see. then perhaps we see each other in the same light after all. a resplendent one, flush with warmth and anticipation, but one which i must shy away from, for now. node context: still flustered, but pleased to learn you like him romantically. then getting to the point - he can't do anything until the orb is dealt with.

if tav directly tells him to cease the perceived flirting, he will reveal that he considered their relationship to be a "budding romance" at this stage.

player: if this is an attempt at flirting, you should stop. i'm not interested. gale: right. understood. you shall hear no more on the subject from me. gale: consider this budding romance thoroughly nipped. though i hope our friendship need not come to such an abrupt end.

yet at the same time, he is also completely flustered if tav is the one who initiates the flirting:

regardless of which flirt option tav chooses to pick, the outcome remains the same:

while battle naturally is always accompanied by the unpredictable, (as well as the dread of facing a yet unknown enemy) i don’t think he experiences quite the same amount of trepidation as where matters of the heart are concerned. or perhaps it would be more accurate to say it’s an altogether different kind.

the budding relationship with tav is once again unfamiliar territory for him after all those years he went without mortal intimacy, years that have been spent with mystra instead. it’s understandable that he exercises caution at all times, knowing what’s at stake if he lets go for but merely a moment. i also believe gale to be a character who generally goes “all out” once he chooses to be intimate with someone. we know that he doesn’t do casual trysts, friends-with-benefits arrangements, or anything of the sort. instead he wants to build a deep connection first. gale is a romantic through and through, he only feels comfortable being intimate once it has been explicitly established that the emotions he feels for tav are indeed wholly reciprocated. gale puts his whole heart into everything he does, he would’ve felt that it was a disservice to tav if he was only able to give them (according to him) even less than the remaining fragments of a broken man he has to offer — once he decides to give himself, he gives himself fully.

another added factor, however, is that the tiefling party simply wasn’t the right time for him yet, even if he already felt some attraction to them. part of him perhaps would’ve liked to go a bit further, be more direct about his growing fondness for them. spending a night together, just enjoying each other's company, talking until the sun rises, perhaps even sharing their first kiss if he felt that the timing was right — but i don’t think he would’ve considered this to be the appropriate stage in their relationship to sleep with tav either way. orb or no.

gale also tells us this much during the Last Night Alive scene, as well as during the conversation after you just met tara. in an ideal situation he would’ve taken his time, courted tav properly, said it all better.

gale: if things were different, if we were home, i'd have taken the time to do things properly. to say it all better. but time is short.

gale: i always imagined what it would be like when you finally got to meet her. this wasn't quite what i had pictured. gale: i thought we'd be in waterdeep. you, curled up before a crackling hearth while i prepared us a ridiculously extravagant meal, served with a batch of my homemade hundur sauce.

time is short.

i always headcanoned gale to be on the demi spectrum. that he needs to build a close bond before sexual intimacy is something that even remotely occurs to him. tav is an anomaly in this regard — he knows he deeply cares for them, emotions that developed even in the short, few months they've known each other, and that he doesn’t have the luxury of time to let their relationship unfold in all the many ways he dreamed of. all he knows is that he loves tav, wholly and truly. and that, by the gods, he has to make the most out of the few extra heartbeats he’s been given. even if his death is inevitable, he will at least be able to show them the depths of his affection. leave them with shared memories of pure tenderness, a knowledge of a love so profound that it might perhaps even prevail way beyond his passing.

player: what about all we shared together? are you just going to give up? gale: this isn't giving up it's securing victory, at a price i am willing to pay. and everything we shared can live on - with you.

i wouldn’t necessarily say that gale was trying to “protect himself emotionally” during the tiefling party, but rather acted accordingly to the horrifying circumstances the tadpole gang (and especially he himself) find themselves in. i don’t think gale ever really considers a romanced!tav as someone he needs to be guarded around. evident in the way he immediately throws all doors open without any sign of hesitation once he has their assurance that their love is indeed mutual. gale pours his heart out to them regardless, not knowing whether his feelings are truly returned. he is not a character who shies away from being vulnerable by any means. he is an open book, that tav is free to peruse in as they see fit. a slither of trust is all he needs.

during the weave scene the connection abruptly fades once tav either imagines passionately kissing him or holding his hand during a romantic walk. a scene that again shows that he is genuinely stunned by what he’s being shown. after all, it doesn't happen often that gale of waterdeep is at a loss for words.

gale: i... i didn't think... narrator: *you perceive quick-fire gusts of embarrassment, trepidation, and finally... elation.* gale: sorry, i wasn't expecting... but it is a pleasant image to be sure! gale: most pleasant, in fact. most welcome. nodecontext: warm, with real affection

i do believe the weave scene in particular to be a turning point for him. sort of an epiphany. the first moment in which he realizes that he actually might like the idea of eventually being with tav as perhaps more than a friend. that he is filled with fondness whenever they’re near and that he is excited to see where their joined travels lead them next.

player: when i said we could be more than friends, you answered 'perhaps'. what does that really mean? gale: if i recall correctly, the waterdhavian dictionary of the common tongue of faerun defines it as an adverb that conveys the meaning of 'it may be that', or 'possibly'. gale: you see, i'm not a big believer in fate, but i do believe in serendipity. gale: life is a tempest of events that sometimes we brace against and sometimes embrace. gale: you're one such event that, one day soon perhaps, i'd like to embrace.

given my personal hc of gale being demisexual, i genuinely don’t believe that he entertained the thought before that. he was way too preoccupied with other more pressing concerns. his overall condition, the tadpole, mourning the loss of his powers, still dealing with a lingering sense of loneliness and melancholy. a yearning for better times, as well as disillusionment of being cast out and left behind, even if he has already worked through his romantic feelings for mystra and their unilaterally ended relationship by then.

gale: i'm hardly pining. it's been a year or more since mystra cast me aside.

tav’s advances genuinely catch him off guard, which is, according to my interpretation, also the reason why their shared connection abruptly faded. a general loss of focus. gale immediately bidding tav goodnight to reflect on the situation and sort through his thoughts again shows that this wasn’t how he expected this moment of teaching to unfold. it seems rather uncharacteristic of him to initiate a kiss in this specific scenario. tav was testing the waters, whether it happened intentionally or not, and gale found himself pleasantly surprised by the turn of events.

i also believe that we generally shouldn’t use origin playthroughs as a cross-reference for the actual canon. larian approached each story with more or less detail and there are already so many inconsistencies present that have been pointed out by other players. instead we should see origin pts as an oc kind of scenario — larian handing us the reigns of each origin character, a way for us to have fun and figure out all the atrocities we could possibly come up with. sort of like playing with our own set of barbies. (“go nuts, show nuts” as tunglr staff put it back in the day) for example, playing as w*ll doesn’t lock you out of raiding the grove and spending a steamy night with m*nth*ra right after either. which is something that contradicts everything he stands for/something he wouldn't naturally do. even if you try to play an origin character as close to their canon portrayal as possible, you will still encounter several contradictions and discrepancies during the duration of your game. larian sadly also has a chronic pattern of overlooking gale in terms of content, fixes, and overall responsiveness. so it’s easy to conclude that his origin story simply hasn’t been fleshed out to the same extent & treated with the same amount of care and consideration that certain other characters received. (which is awfully ironic considering he’s been proven to be the most popular origin character, but i digress)

basically, this has been my very long-winded way of saying: the reason why gale refuses to be intimate with tav pre-orb stabilization is indeed because he is afraid of the orb accidentally detonating during a moment of carelessness and/or indulgence, as well as because of gale’s own preferences when sex & romance are concerned.

Do you think Hawks will die to save Toga?

Personally, I wouldn't like it if either of them died. Like, the potential narrative payoff here would be strongest if both of them lived, imo. I would rather see a situation where Keigo donates just enough blood to stabilize them both, rather than a situation where one person completely exsanguinates themselves and leaves behind a rash of trauma and unresolved feelings in the person they "saved."

I'm definitely not the best when it comes to Hawks meta, but I'll try my best to break down my personal feelings on why I feel both Keigo and Himiko need to live in order to "break the cycle":

1. You Can Start Over. I'll Help You.

This one's the biggest, most obvious point in favor of them both living imo. Hawks made an offer to help Jin start over, but rescinded that offer and immediately went for the kill the moment Jin showed signs of resistance. This was Keigo's biggest failure as both a hero and as an individual, and something he has yet to atone for.

In turn, Himiko believes there are no second chances-- that her only options are death or being locked away forever. So, she chooses death. She needs someone to offer her a third option.

The set up is there.

There's also the matter of Keigo and Himiko both stating that they want an "easier world" as their core motivation, and both of them state that they want to be the ones who help make that world.

Their goals only sound simplistic on the surface and serve as a mask for their respective traumas, but... ultimately, a world that's easier for Himiko to live in (where she is consensually given blood by someone who loves her and she is allowed to give her blood back to the world in return) is a world where heroes can finally take it easy-- because it's a world that nips the endless creation of its own "villains" in the bud, through unified acts of compassion and understanding.

Both characters have caused others intense pain and hurt others in their attempts to take shortcuts to the creation of an "easier world"-- Hawks is the hero that's "too fast," and Himiko is also associated with her near-supernatural speed. They're both too impatient and want the quickest possible results. Having both Himiko and Keigo living and learning the "right way" to create their ideal world-- and then, getting to be a part of that world as they both continue to atone-- feels much more meaningful than having one or both of them die before they can see that future reach fruition.

2. The Big, Suicidal Elephant in the Room

The majority of the LOV members all struggle with suicidal ideation-- Touya wants to set everything Endeavor ever chose over him ablaze, and he wants that inferno to also serve as his funeral pyre. Tomura has got a dissertation's worth of issues regarding his own mortality and self-perception/identity, and his whole "let's-just-destroy-it-all/we-don't-need-a-future-actually-lol" schtick has always been a symptom rather than a legit proposal for a cure. Himiko wants to disappear into the identities of the people she loves, because the world treats her a little more kindly when she isn't "Toga Himiko." The LOV trio's arcs all revolve around "death of the self" to some degree. (That said... resurrection and rebirth are also heavy themes within Tenko, Touya, and Himiko's arcs, soooo....)

Keigo also struggles with suicidal ideation and places the worth of his own life far, far, faaaaar below that of everyone else.

This has already been said, and shouldn't really need to be said in the first place, but-- people have every right to feel uncomfortable and criticize a story that attempts to validate suicidal characters by portraying their suicide in a noble/redemptive light.

3. It's All About All Mi-- Err..... Tomie?

"I was fine with that-- not saving her, turning my back on her. Me, who claims he wants to help people." - Hawks, about Tomie.

"I tried to go about things the right way" is a good line that touches on one of the core conflicts of Keigo's character: He suppresses so much of his natural instinct to do good so he can do "right."

Keigo knows in his heart of hearts that "the right way" doesn't save people like his mother, it didn't save Jin, and it's not going to save Himiko. He's been groomed into upholding the society and status quo that caused him and Tomie to nearly fall through the cracks in the first place-- and I've always found it both fascinating and sad that Keigo seems to equate choosing "the right way" (i.e. becoming a hero) to abandoning his mother. Keigo effectively being *sold* to the HPSC is what took Tomie off of the streets and gave her a roof over her head-- it gave her "a chance to start over." But Keigo doesn't seem to view this as true saving. With that in mind, his attempt to "save" Jin by essentially giving him the same offer the HPSC gave Tomie was always doomed end in failure.

Keigo: "My mother feared punishment for harboring a criminal, so she took me and ran."

Tomie first ran out of fear of being arrested after Takami Thief was captured-- which led to both her and Keigo being homeless for an extended period of time. She ran again after Dabi/Touya threatened her for information on Keigo, this time out of fear of her son-- a son who had became synonymous with "the law" she feared so much in her eyes. She can't bear facing him after her betrayal and implicitly fears punishment/condemnation from him (even though Keigo had *no* intention of punishing her)-- Tomie readily leaves behind the "normal" home and "normal" life that Hawks obtained for her through "doing things the right way," bc the imaginary threat of punishment and condemnation is something that comes across as worse for her. This only further convinces Keigo that he failed to save his mother, even though he's the one who's being betrayed and hurt by her.

I can't help seeing similarities between Tomie & Himiko's decisions to run out of an intense fear of punishment/imprisonment, and how this inevitably ties to Keigo. Keigo subconsciously realizes that he can't truly save people like Tomie, Jin, or Himiko as "Hawks" because "Hawks" is part of the problem. He longs to save others as himself-- as "Takami Keigo" (which is why the loss of his quirk kind of has me like "👀 👀 👀 whatcha gonna do next, turkey boy...,,..👀 👀 👀" )

As an aside, I seem to recall that transhawks made a few meta post where they talk about how there are traces of Jin's design in Tomie (esp her eyes, which have the same dead-eyed thousand yard stare) and that their resemblance is likely intentional (edit: link to one post pointing the resemblance out)-- It's not as overt, but imo, Himiko also resembles Tomie (just a little!) when she has her hair down.

Anyway! Both Jin and Himiko dying after Keigo A) has spent his whole life agonizing about how his own mother wasn't able to survive in their current society, B) has expressed guilt about how he didn't even try to save her and didn't make attempts to involve himself in her life, C) has talked at length about he wanted to be "more like Bubaigawara" and then proceeded to roleplay him, badly, for a good third of Act 3 (ohhhh boy ☠️☠️☠️), and D) had demanded that Toga be killed immediately after she arrives in Gunga, only for Ochako and Tsuyu to explicitly challenge and reject the idea that killing was the only option available.... idk, Himiko dying while Keigo does nothing would just feel massively incoherent at this point??

TL;DR The resolution to Keigo's arc currently hinges on addressing his origin, his identity, his guilt, and his ties to these three characters. Keigo feels that he failed with Tomie, and he explicitly failed with Jin-- and I personally don't think his arc can have a satisfactory ending without addressing those failures through Himiko, or without him trying to right where he went wrong by helping her in some capacity. This is a chance for him to finally follow his innate drive to do good over doing what their society dictates as "right."

All that being said, if Hori did decide to have Hawks sacrifice himself: Hawks choosing to sacrifice himself because he wants to believe in the future that the hero kids are creating and wants to believe that children like Himiko have a place in that future feels WAAAY more tonally consistent with mha's themes than Himiko choosing to sacrifice herself because she doesn't think she has a future

One message is about healing and hope and belief, the other is about failing to truly save someone who was already suicidal from their inevitable self destruction.

MHA has been defining true saving as "going above and beyond" for hundreds of chapters now-- true saving means saving a person's heart, body, and soul. It means giving them a future. By mha's own definitions, Himiko choosing to kill herself means she wasn't saved. Pure and simple-- You can't save the heart but not the body/soul (Himiko), you can't save the soul but not the body/heart (Touya), and you can't save the body but not the heart/soul (Tomura). There's a lot more work to be done here-- but that's fine, bc MHA has never depicted true saving or true healing as some magical, instantaneous thing. (#recoverygirldni)

Actually, first I should say that if you're getting extremely abusive asks, escalate it to the reporting team on Tumblr. Use the report and block function and put in a formal complaint through the website. Some months ago I was getting hostile visitors to my blog that I dismissed as just trolls, after all, weird things happen online and especially on Tumblr every day - but turns out, they were more than just trolls. They were underemployed but fanatically motivated k-pop stans/commentators determined to physically hurt me in real life, because the facts I was pointing out were inconvenient for them, and my opinions critical of the k-pop industry and the sycophants trafficking in 'discourse' that excuses that bullshit, were difficult to counter with you know, words and reason. Thankfully, I was able to nip that in the bud by escalating to the privacy and reporting team at Tumblr, worked with some experts irl and now those people are permanently banned from using the platform under several IP addresses.

Of course, when I re-opened the blog, almost right away some people were upset that I was writing again, for whatever reason. But that's normal, lol, so I just ignore and delete those asks whenever they pop up. Lol. I don't know what to tell you Anon, but some people are just naturally... like that. They'd score above the average Dark Triad percentile. I know we typically make fun of toxic taekookers but many of those same behaviors we ridicule are found in various shades in k-pop spaces in general - the way this industry runs practically attracts those types. Like I'd go as far as saying the people playing the k-pop game best are taekookers and Tae solo stans. Hobi akgaes are really good at it too. I've said before, if you're a critical and contrarian person, k-pop is the perfect industry for you because you'll never run out of things to have a problem with.

Plus, half the time I have no idea what these people are going on about in my inbox anyway, so I just delete them. Before, during the pandemic, occasionally I'd post a few to tear down and laugh at since I had the time. But now airports are open and I'm back to working full time. I can hardly handle the 10s of asks I sometimes get daily, so it makes no sense to give those complaints any oxygen.

The way I deal with asks that are hostile or just read like they were written by an insane person, is to delete them.

There's also the option of turning off Anonymous asks completely. I know several bloggers sometimes take this route.

If it's especially weird, I report and block. I haven't had to do this in months but if it's extra weird, I report the ask directly to Tumblr's reporting team.

You should also note that the topics you write about can influence whether you get more or fewer weirdos. Shipping spaces are notoriously toxic, so if you'd like to continue writing on the topic, develop a tagging system that shields your content from taekookers, eg, abbreviate or add your blog name to the hashtag.

Long sharp talons run across a row of lockers. Chrissy screams as loud as she can, feeling the shriek deep in her bones. She runs down the hallway until she trips.

“Its time Grace…”

“No no stay away!”

She’s sobbing now, as big fat tears run down her cheek.

The creature continues to stalk towards her a grim smile.

“Cut!!!”

“Good job. Henry, we have a solo scene with you next.”

“Got it. Can I get a coffee real quick?” The man, in full monster make-up says to an assistant.

“Chrissy head to hair and make-up. We have Corroded Coffin for two days, were gonna do the first parts of your death scene today then the full scene tomorrow."

“Corroded Coffin?” She says heart skips a beat.

“Yeah the band for the scene?” The director clarifies.

“Right of course.”

She knew when she got the part that her big death scene would be just outside of a concert, she would run through begging for help but no one else would be able to see the monster stalking her. Then said monster would make her see everyone, including the band, massacred.

The studio hadn't told her who the band would be, she was pretty sure they didn't know when the project started, just whoever was big and could fit it in their schedules. 

Honestly she hadn't thought about the band, much more focused on getting her lines right and impressing the director, a horror legend. 

This movie was a big deal for her. Much more professional than the slasher she was last in, she had almost lost that job because she refused to take her shirt off but luckily they worked around it and just killed her off earlier than originally planned. Honestly, she was glad. She had heard that another girl got hypothermia while filming in the lake. 

No this film had a lot bigger budget and the creators involved cared a lot more about makign a good film than having a party. 

Pacing the small space of her trailer she thinks of her options. She’s already done hair and make up, but still has some time to kill before her scene with the band, Corroded Coffin.

She was going to see Eddie Munson, her ex-boyfriend, for the first time in six years.

Part of her is thrilled to see him again. She hadnt reallized, hadnt let her self really, how much she missed him. They spent one great summer together after high school but went their separate ways, both with big dreams they had to pursue on their own.

Despite being heartbroken there were thankfully no hard feelings, so she at least didn't have to worry about that. The quickened pace of her heart and sweaty palms, however were a problem.

There was also the reaction of the band itself. She was pretty sure Eddie would be able to play off seeing her again but the rest of the band, if they were still the same line up from back then. Which knowing Eddie's loyalty she assumed they were. Yeah they were not nearly as good at playing it cool. Especially Grant, she can just imagine the open mouth stare of shock he'll have when he see’s her.

That makes her decision. She needs to nip this in the bud and meet them before they start the scene. Leaving her trailer she finds an AD, grateful to find out that they're already here and waiting in their own trailer.

Eddie sits on the couch of their trailer with the other guys waiting for the director to call them on set. 

It's all so surreal. Its only been about a year and half since they really got big. 

One moment they're recording an EP in a shitty studio with poor quality equipment, the next they're being picked up by one of the biggest rock labels out there, with their songs being played on the radio constantly. 

The whole movie thing came as a shock. Their manager brought it up and well, being huge horror fans they weren't going to pass up  a chance to work with one of the best directors in the genre. Besides the scene they were gonna be in sounded pretty cool. He always wanted to get covered in fake blood.

They just got off tour last week and between that and going straight to the studio to record another album they haven't had a lot of time  to learn very much about the project. Thankfully they didnt have any real lines other than normal stuff they say at a concert. 

So they had no idea who was starring in it and who they’d be working with. The guys had been arguing about who it could be, what Hollywood starlet they hoped to be meeting today. 

Eddie ignored them; he didn't really care. Unlike the rest of the band he hadn't really lived up to the rockstar moniker. 

He dated here and there, he wasn't a monk or anything, but well it was hard to get excited about women when he'd already been with the best one out there. Though he very rarely allowed himself to think about her. Unless he was writing, she did make an excellent muse. 

There's a knock on the door and they quiet down thinking it's time to get started. 

Instead the giant bouncer the studio put outside their trailer (fans had been getting a little wild recently) pops his head in.

“One of the actresses is outside, says she’s your oldest fan?”

“Is she hot?” Gareth asks, Eddie rolls his eyes.

The bouncer nods. 

"Well bring her in then!"

A moment  later she walks in and it feels like he's been hit by an eighteen wheeler.

The rest of the guys gasp in shock. Grant has that stupid face he wears when hes surpised. Eyes bugged out, mouth open. Eddie has to bite his tongue to not do the same thing.

Chrissy fucking Cunnigham is standing in front of him a wide grin on her face. 

Suddenly every memory from that summer, every gushy song lyric he's written comes flying to the surface.

"Holy shit" he says under his breath.

She giggles and he can't believe he's lived so long without hearing that perfect sound again.

"It's nice to see you too Eddie" 

"Sorry yeah. You look amazing Cunningham." She really does. 

"So do you Mr. Rockstar." That thousand watt smile firmly in place. 

They just stare at each other with moon eyes.

Then he hears one of the guys groan and say. "Here we go again."

Chrissy laughs, Eddie flips them off. 

They're not wrong though. Now that he's seeing her again he's going to make damn sure he doesn't lose her again. Not if he can help it.

Bonestrike gives a sigh, reading the diagnostics of Whirl's frame. "If you manage to keep doing what you're currently doing now and not make it worse, maxium next week. If it get's worse though, we're doing the surgery, for your own health and safety."

"....." Frag sake. He hates this, why did he leave this for so long? Whirl clenches his claws together in thought until they start adding grooves to eachother, the medic tapping his arm to stop.

"Whirl?"

"Is there really no other option available?"

As startups tend to focus more on building new features than on sound processes. This focus on new features can lead to data breaches, tech debt, and other costly problems.

Our role is to assess the value that tech presents in your business, how it’s built and evaluate the team that makes the tech.

Let’s look at what IT due diligence is and how you can prepare for it.

IT Due Diligence isn’t about the tech; it’s about YOU

The investor is investing in you, not just the P&L. They need to understand your vision, what makes you tick, how you make decisions and most importantly – how you manage challenges.

Hence a major consideration is the management team assessment. We won’t be asking you specific questions about your leadership or management style. We will get a sense of both from our conversations about your technology.

For instance, a discussion on how you (or your CTO) decide what goes into the tech stack – and how you manage tech debt will provide a good insight. Note I can give this away as it’s not the type of thing people can fix or lie about – when we marry up what you say with the data we collect, we’ll be able to see a through-line.

But we cannot assess an FTSE 250 team similarly to an early start-up. So, depending on your journey, we will assess your team under different criteria.

In summary, we have low expectations and are more forgiving. These early-stage startups are churning through new ideas and concepts until they get a glimpse of traction.

From a technology perspective, the tech footprint will likely be small and insecure, and we assess accordingly. We will be looking at data sources and how data is stored as often both can have issues or create longer-term risks.

This uncertainty is exciting for some founders, but some rigour is needed, and we need to understand if management is keen to learn the more ‘boring’ aspect of better governance and controls.

Without either, it is still possible to scale your business, but it often comes at a cost later, so it’s good to nip it in the bud during the early stages.

Stage Two: Learning

This is where things get interesting and usually where investors we work with tend to get involved.

You’ve got product-market-fit or close to it, and you’re looking for help to scale what you have already proven. Hopefully, there is minimal investment/innovation is needed from the technology perspective.

We generally refer to this as a ‘more of the same’ investment.

At this stage, we’re curious to understand the team’s learning capability as they will need to develop new personal skills, which typically means maturing their approach to running their business.

We will put you under more scrutiny regarding how you govern your environment, and there’ll be less acceptance of ‘nuances’ that could extrapolate into bigger issues in the future.

Lastly, we will also assess management’s openness to working with others – as the best-performing teams don’t do it all themselves. They have the humility to understand their strengths and reach out to partners or experts for guidance.

Stage Three: Earning

At this stage, your firm has a healthy number of customers and your technology has proven its worth. Now you have the options of internationalising or growing through innovation.

As you can imagine, this later stage is more complex. How well will the management team ‘keep the lights on’ whilst innovating growth? What cracks will we see in the overall operating model? By this stage, are commercial operations working well with the technology function?

Overall we’ll be assessing your team from an efficiency and operational perspective and ensuring your technology and product roadmaps (which translates to ‘spend’) clearly demonstrate a return on investment. Simply, you need to be better at strategy, operations, cyber, innovation etc. The list goes on.

It’s easy for me to say, but IT Due Diligence isn’t something to be concerned about. But there is a sense of nervousness from management when projects commence. That’s understandable. We’re looking ‘under the hood’ of your environment – but we are there as collaborators, not auditors.

1- Decide of a unspiraling routine to execute asap as you notice you're spiraling

What is spiraling? I consider it so when I am having obessive thoughts about a particular situation, rethinking again and again and again about one specific situation that MIGHT happen or happened. I explore all the possibilities, all the alternate options, no nook is left unexplored, and then I redo it again, and it evolves into catastrophism. Catastrophism is when you start thinking of the WORST cases that might happen.

Personally I am going on YouTube (one of the rare moments I go on that hellsite) and start seeking for cute cooking videos of women doing cookies and cakes and cake decorating. The slow movements, the cute stuff being created, this is all so relaxing and it helps me bring myself back to Earth and just stop thinking YEARS ahead. It can be a YouTuber you love, doing some cleaning, drawing, reading comics, and so on.

This despiral routine is to NOT enable the anxious process in the brain. You enable that process by participating and carrying on the spiraling EVEN if you're aware you're spiraling.

With time you'll learn the signs you're spiraling earlier and earlier and will be able to nip that right away. I used to need a good lengthy despiral process that lasted close to 2 hours but with time I learned more about myself and I was able to cut that down to a easy 15-20 minute thing.

2- Prepping isn't a bad thing, it even is a great thing actually.

Preparing for eventualities and issues that might come isn't unhealthy. It's good planification and how people should be. What is actually bad is obessing over the bad outcomes, and the final results, and never doing anything in the middle to prevent the bad outcomes.

Like you're anxious about failing your semester and fucking up your life, yes, but not studying during the semester is only reinforcing the anxiety related to the outcome. If you don't study, no wonders you risk the worst outcome. So you gotta prep, nip the anxiety in the bud, and give yourself relief by studying. This is actually self-care as you're saving future you distress, despite how boring studying actually is.

Not being actually prepared (no, thinking about it isn't preparation, despite what the anxiety monster is saying, it's actually doing some work, studying, training, etc), when the mess hits the fan will only reinforce the anxiety. It enables even more the anxiety.

3- Stop assuming nobody understands you and that they can't help you.

Your circumstances are likely NOT unique to you, to a degree nobody legit can't help you. Very likely there's lots of people that went through the same thing you're currently experiencing. They want to give you advice and tips so your suffering is shortened and that you don't go through so much like they did. It's kindness of heart they're extending to you. Instead of squarely rejecting their advice, take this opportunity to ask them more pointed questions relating to their advice. Try to figure out how is their advice working, why it is working for them, and apply the advice to you if it seems it MIGHT work. You never know!

I am especially guilty of this exact thing and this only delayed my healing towards being a more balanced person.

4- Stop talking in a negative way about yourself or in general.

Its a hard pill to swallow, a lot of us women are taught to diminish ourselves, we're taught to maintain a poor self-confidence (to be more easily molded)... But low confidence actually makes the anxiety worse and harder on the self. Anxiety uses our poor self confidence to feed the famous spiraling.

Even confident people can have anxiety, BUT low confidence makes everything else worse.

A great way to start is by stopping describing yourself to others (and to yourself) in a negative way. It only makes your brain be like "hey see you said that out loud, it must be fucking true, you're shit ya see!!", and just brings NOTHING productive. It also makes others see you in a more negative way and thus potentially influencing their behaviour towards you.

The way you behave and talk and think has a influence on your own perception of yourself. Treat yourself like shit, you'll feel like shit. And if you feel like shit, you'll treat yourself like shit. Nip that in the bud; work on reframing the negative thoughts into neutral or positive thoughts.

This includes self-depreciating humor and making a clown of yourself.

Instead of saying you're bad because you're late (some basic exemple I know but it's for the sake of this post), reframe that into saying that you apologize for being late, and carry on. Mentally, you make a plan for next time, what exactly went wrong and make a proactive plan so it doesn't happens again. And you leave it at that. Next time you execute the plan you prepped.

Final note:

A lot of the advice given around mental health in general are centered around comforting and minimizing and sheltering from stressors, which I find to be potentially be very harmful. The person then becomes more vulnerable and doesn't learns to actually deal with their issues.

The work to do is to give ourselves daily small challenges, small stress situations to make the anxiety flare up and train ourselves to deal with the flare ups and actually learn to deal with the situations, rather than freezing or running away.

Doing small challenges is a form of preparation, as said in Point 2, and it preps you for the greater challenges.

Not challenging ourselves and staying in the comfortable denial, when shit hits the fan, is gonna cause major issues that are hard/overwelming to deal with, and thus, reinforces the anxiety ("see this happened!! You're bad! This will happen again because you're shit!!").

Also, allow yourself to fail sometimes. Accept that sometimes it will be shit and that it doesn't defines who you are as a person. Fail, then analyze what happened, then plan a strategy for next time, then leave at it. It's all planned and ready to be enacted next time it happens.
