one thing i really love about your writing and want to thank you for is how you refuse to diminish the contributions of historical women who operated within society’s constraints. like obviously it’s fantasy and the historical element is fairly handwavey but so many authors fall into the “female characters must be Strong TM (meaning they intentionally subvert gender roles and refuse to do “girly” things/get married etc) in order to be valuable” trap, and i love that you steer right clear of that.
yeah, you have female characters like zofia and ciri and renfri and dragonfly and shani and priss who say fuck gender roles i do what i want, but you also have characters like milena and marika and adelina and pavetta who lean into their expected roles, who enjoy traditionally feminine work like handicrafts and childrearing and who understand the value in marrying for status and security and find joy and fulfillment in their duty. and then you have characters who straddle the line so well, like yen and triss and julita and livi, who embrace femininity in presentation but not action, and that’s good too! and you even have characters who use their societal role for evil, like marta or aridea, or who fall into “rigidly enforced gender roles for thee but not for me” like calanthe, or who have been subsumed by their role until whoever they were as a person is gone, like the countess de lettenhove. and all of these characters are shown by your narrative to be equally valuable and deserving of agency, because they’re people and not because they’re women.
idk there’s just been a lot of talk lately about the way “well behaved” women are erased from the historical narrative, and fictionally portrayed as less interesting or deserving of happiness (lizzy bennett vs charlotte lucas, etc) and i love that you don’t fall into that. your characters can be like marika, they can behave exactly as a noble lady should, they can recognize the reality of the world around them and know that yes, marrying up IS actually often the only way to secure your future, and by god they can be good at it, and they’re still a person who deserves to be recognized! the fantasy element of historical fantasy means that female characters can be Not Like Other Girls if they want, but i appreciate that you don’t shy away from the historical part, where they don’t have to to be interesting or likable.
Thank you so much.
I try very hard to make sure my female characters are varied and interesting, and that they don't all turn away from traditional Feminine skills - because those were important! Fibercraft is how you get clothes! Cooking is how you get food! Childcare is how you get another generation!
There's something glorious about a woman picking up a sword and going off to slay her own dragons. But there's something glorious about a woman being able to lean in to the more traditional feminine skills, and having those valued and admired, too.
The important thing is being able to have the choice.

Bex's Book Corner #19 - part 2
Tumblr media
And here's part 2 of my June reading roundup - these are all the contemporary books I read last month:
I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston
Having read and loved this author’s well-known debut, Red, White and Royal Blue, I was looking forward to this. I’m happy to say it lives up to the hype.
Our heroine Chloe Green is a young queer girl at a private religious school. It’s not an easy place for her to be, but it’s the best school in the area. She’s managed to find a niche with her outsider friends. Now high school is almost over and Chloe is this close to being valedictorian.
The only thing that stands in her way is Shara Wheeler: the popular daughter of the school principal. Their relationship is that of academic rivals. Then, out of the blue, Shara kisses Chloe - and then she disappears.
Shara leaves behind a series of clues to the last 3 people she kissed - her boyfriend, the boy next door, and Chloe. They work together to find her… but naturally, they also find FEELINGS along the way!
Tumblr media
I like to call this bisexual belligerence - bi-ligerance for short. It’s when a bi girl is overly competitive with another girl, only to realize it’s because she has feelings for her. At first I wasn’t sure about Shara’s motivation, but the more we got to know her in her absence, the more compelling the story became.
Overall this was a very enjoyable read - McQuiston has done it again!
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A sapphic book
Similar Books: Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, You Should See Me In a Crown by Leah Johnson, Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
Content Warnings: religious intolerance and homophobia (challenged)
2. Debating Darcy by Sayantani DasGupta
I’m back at it again with the Austen retellings.
This time around, the story of Pride and Prejudice is reimagined with Lizzy Bennet and Mr. Darcy - called Leela Bose and Firoze Darcy - are competitors on rival speech and debate teams.
Leela’s ragtag public school team is pitted against teams from private schools, which I thought was an excellent way of re-contextualizing the class conflict from the original novel. The Bennet family is reimagined as Leela’s teammates: Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are the teachers in charge. Mrs. Bennet still suffers from overactive nerves - another fun aside from the book. The Bennet sisters are now Leela’s teammates, as are the stand-ins for Mr. Collins and Charlotte Lucas. The Bingley siblings are on the rival team, along with the odious Mr. Wickham. The esteemed Lady Catherine makes an appearance as the elocution coach.
Tumblr media
Another thing I loved about this retelling was the diversity: Leela is desi and Darcy is biracial. Wickham - Jishu in this version - is the same ethnicity as Leela. But Jishu is every bit as villainous here as he was in the original. He’s reimagined as a serial sexual harasser, which casts an unflattering spotlight on the problem of sexism and harassment in the real-life speech and debate world.
Overall this was a cute retelling that made excellent usage of the academic rivals to lovers trope.
Popsugar Reading Challenge: off-challenge
Similar Books: Pride by Ibi Zoboi, A Taste for Love by Jennifer Yen, The Code For Love and Heartbreak by Jillian Cantor.
Content Warnings: sexism, sexual harassment.
3. The Guncle by Steven Rowley
This was a very wholesome story about a gay uncle - aka guncle - who gets more than he bargained for when he has to look after his niece and nephew for the summer after their mother dies and their father goes to rehab. Always the fun uncle, Patrick has never had to look after the kids for an extended period of time. He’s a washed up actor who is semi-retired in Palm Springs after his successful show went off the air. He’s been going through the motions of life since his partner died. Gradually Patrick and the kids find their own ways to cope with their grief and figure out how to move forward.
I teared up several times reading this book. It was deeply satisfying and cathartic. You will laugh, you will cry. I know I did!
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book that fulfills a prompt from a past Popsugar Reading Challenge - in this case, it’s “A book that should be made into a movie”. This would be such a good movie!
Similar Books: Content Warnings: grief, death of a parent, death of a loved one, addiction
That wraps things up for June reads! I'll be back next month to talk about another Austen retelling: The Murder of Mr. Wickham! Am I reading Austen retellings to make up for whatever BS is going on with the new Persuasion movie? Maybe. I'm doing what I need to do to cope.

Green Tea: How I was taught to love
Green Tea: How I was taught to love - An elaborative story of my dislike for green tea, and my first love, a boy I ignored at first.
I always disliked coffee. I never hated it, but I just didn't like the bitter aftertaste.
When I became old enough to be allowed to take caffeine, I chose to drink tea instead, it was healthier and contained just the right amount of caffeine I needed.
I love every type of tea leaf. I loved Assam, and most of all Darjeeling. I also indulged myself in the fruity and rosy flavours of the infusions, and experimented with different blends. Even though my resources were limited, I learned how to brew Chai thousands of miles away from India and even booked a ticket and flew to Thailand to taste Cha Yen.
But even though I loved tea, I just always hated green tea, more than coffee.
Now that I look back, I didn't know how to brew green tea properly when I first tasted it, no wonder it tasted awful.
Ever since I was a child, I also hated the idea of engaging in a romance. For 16 years of my life, I have always been dettached from the idea of even being infatuated with someone, always jealous of other girls who found handsome guys to fawn over, or even those who got into a puppy love as early as high school.
For 16 years of my life, I was left to wonder if I was abnormal, when other girls my age were experiencing their first bouts of love and I was left out. But at the same time, I was repulsed by the idea of liking someone that way and being liked by someone. It wasn't until I first met a boy before I turned 16. The circumstances where we met were rather embarassing. We were both the same age, so his mother wanted him to meet me for... obvious reasons. When he was introduced to him, he was shy and awkward.
My own pride mocked him in my head, thinking he was a shy boy who can't even converse with a girl. I was repulsed by the idea of any romantic interest between us. At the end of the day, I laughed at the whole incident instead.
Yet I remembered his smile, it was adorable. I knew it would be awkward for us to meet. Between the two of us, I hid my embarassment better though. He tried not to maintain eye contact, and he was thankful his sister stole my attention instead.
I saw him over the course of several more meetings, but never conversed nor interacted with him. I never thought anything of the incident anymore, mocking it instead. There came to a point in time that we moved away, and I was bound never to see him again.
Time passed and I grew up. Emotionally, physically, and mentally. I was older and wiser. Brighter and more straightforward. No longer silly, but discreetly witty. Pretty, but refined. Such was the blossom of adolescence.
I've learned to accept that just because I have not loved someone, does not mean my adolescence was incomplete.
Long after that however, I began hearing his accomplisments, his personality, and his kindness. I was intrigued. The shy boy I met wasn't a shy boy, he was an accomplished and hard-working young man. I never deemed myself a hopeless romantic, but I have read almost every Jane Austen novel and I can guarantee you it was like Lizzy falling in love with Darcy the moment she visited and toured Pemberly.
And that's when it hit me. I fell in love. I've learned to love someone who I mocked before.
A cruel twist of fate. My own premature judgement was against me. The most cruel and upsetting first love, I dare say. Now that I'm older. I recently brewed myself a cup of green tea. When I visited Thailand, I bought green tea leaves for me to experiment on, hoping to try green tea for a second time. Months after my travel, I finally tried them, and I learned to appreciate green tea. After carefully brewing it, aromatic, floral, and fresh scents all danced in harmony in the brew. It was a breath of fresh air(or rather sip of fresh air). It was like I was on a tea farm. I learned to appreciate the unique flavours of green tea, long after I have matured, became older and wiser.
I've learned to appreciate 2 things I have mocked and hated before. But now I've grown, loving things on a more insightful basis.
