Do you have any books on your shelves (or in a stack) that you are unhappy that you still haven’t read yet? If yes, do you have a strategy for getting to them? I have so many that it’s embarrassing and sad. The Crescent City series by Sarah J Maas is probably the worst because I have both books in the series and haven’t read either of them yet. But I’ve made a resolution to only accept ARCs that are offered to me and not request any so that I can have room to read those books that have been waiting for me. Meet Lillian Boyer. She is just one of the many women who were the inspiration for Grace in Nothing But Sky. Like many women of her time (early 1920s), Lillian was seen as a novelty. Her feats of daring, swinging 500 feet above ground while dangling from the wing of a plane, were not deemed to be worth more than a few lines of ink on the page at the time. But Lillian was astounding in every right. She was the first woman to successfully jump from a speeding car onto a ladder hanging precariously from a low-flying plane. She was also the first woman to hang below the wing of plane by only a small wire clenched between her teeth. Like her other daredevil pals Ethel Dare and Mabel Cody, she would dance through the sky on the wing of a plane with only gravity and the force of the wind keeping her aloft. She almost never wore a parachute, saying they restricted her performances. During Women’s History Month we seem to always give kudos to the same names and faces (which are of course worth recognition), but brave and determined women like Lillian deserve notice as well. She tested the skies at every moment and still lived a long and fruitful life. My first journal! I was 10 years old when I got this journal as a present from my parents. I loved it so much. I even gave it a name, apparently: Mary Ann! I had no idea I even did this until I was rummaging through my closet and read snippets of it. But one thing I can see now, looking through the pages. Even at 10 years old I loved to write. I had wanted to be a writer back then, but gave it up because of a rejection. I wish I could go back and tell my 10 year old self to not give up. To keep that passion alive. Because someday she would go on to publish books and so many of her dreams would come true. Truth is, sometimes even now, I need that pep talk. If there is someone in your life who is a writer or artist or struggling to follow their dreams, take a moment of your day and encourage them. Tell me, do you own your own successes, or are you always looking at the next goalpost? I’ll admit that I’m not great at taking a minute to celebrate my victories. I am often thinking about what’s next rather than reveling in the moment. One of my goals for the new year is to take more ownership of my victories. Whether it be getting a new deal (*fingers crossed*) or simply finishing a difficult rewrite, I want to be fully present in that moment.
