Blog Tour + #Review: THE KILLING CODE by Ellie Marney!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog tour for The Killing Code by Ellie Marney! I loved this book, which you’ll see in my review, posted below along with all the details about the book.
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: The Killing Code author: Ellie Marney publisher: Little, Brown BFYR release date: 20 September 2022
A historical mystery about a girl who risks everything to track down a vicious serial killer, for fans of The Enigma Game and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Virginia, 1943: World War II is raging in Europe and on the Pacific front when Kit Sutherland is recruited to help the war effort as a codebreaker at Arlington Hall, a former girls’ college now serving as the site of a secret US Signals Intelligence facility in Virginia. But Kit is soon involved in another kind of fight: Government girls are being brutally murdered in Washington DC, and when Kit stumbles onto a bloody homicide scene, she is drawn into the hunt for the killer. To find the man responsible for the gruesome murders and bring him to justice, Kit joins forces with other female codebreakers at Arlington Hall—gossip queen Dottie Crockford, sharp-tongued intelligence maven Moya Kershaw, and cleverly resourceful Violet DuLac from the segregated codebreaking unit. But as the girls begin to work together and develop friendships—and romance—that they never expected, two things begin to come clear: the murderer they’re hunting is closing in on them…and Kit is hiding a dangerous secret.

My 5-Star Review
The Killing Code is, incredibly, my first read by Ellie Marney. I know I have an older one of hers on my shelf, but haven’t read it yet (which I will be rectifying immediately!). I was thrilled to join this tour and see what all the buzz is about.
I love historical fiction books, and if you make it feminist *and* a murder mystery? I am so in! In this book we have “code girls,” the young women who worked night and day in the codebreaking brigade during the war, coupled with a series of gruesome murders of government girls that our intrepid group decide they must solve because the police are too blinded by their prejudices. The characters are all wonderfully drawn, and the romance is absolutely *chef’s kiss*. I had butterflies at the same time Kit and Moya did! There’s also loads of information on the actual codebreaking work the girls do, and it’s obvious a *ton* of research went into this book. Marney also addresses the racism, classism, and sexism of the era in America (which we all know isn’t just historical). I love the theme of found family, which is one of my favorite tropes, especially in YA. Top it off with some great mystery-solving techniques from Kit, Moya, Dottie, and Violet, and I can honestly say there is nothing I didn’t love about this book. I suspected I knew who the killer was, but I definitely wasn’t sure until right about when it was figured out, so that was a great ending for me!
I highly recommend The Killing Code to anyone who enjoys a great mystery and/or historical fiction. I really hope you’ll pick this up, and let me know what you think!
Rating: 5 stars!
**Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour. This review is voluntary on my part and reflects my honest rating and review of the book.

🧜🏻‍♀️ BOOK CLUB MINI REVIEW 🧜🏻‍♀️😩 BREATHE AND COUNT BACK FROM TEN by @nataliasylv was the July read for the #chronicallyiconicbookclub and man, WHAT A READ! We had the absolute best discussion, and every single one of us (some who have chronic illness/pain or disabilities, and some who don't) saw something of ourselves and our experiences in it. Vero is a child of Peruvian immigrants who was born with hip dysplasia. This means she has lived with multiple surgeries and tons of pain in her life. Her parents sacrificed and struggled to bring her and her sister to America (Florida) for better healthcare and other opportunities. She loves to swim and has a dream to be in the show at Mermaid Cove near where she lives, a dream of which her parents do not approve (look closely at Vero's shadow on the cover and you'll see 🧜🏻‍♀️!). This book is all about growing up and out of the boxes into which our parents sometimes want to put us, finding our own way and speaking up with our authentic voices, exploring sexuality and first love, living as an immigrant but also an American and straddling the two worlds, AND dealing with chronic pain and disability and all that entails (the doctors visits Vero had were so very familiar to many of us in the group). I loved this book so much, and I flagged so many quotes and passages that spoke to me (you can swipe to see one of them). I cannot recommend this book highly enough -- it will absolutely make my top ten reads of the year, if not top five. I want *everyone* to pick this one up! If you do, definitely let me know your thoughts. Blog Tour + #Review: LIVE YOUR BEST LIE by Jessie Weaver (w/ #giveaway)!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the Rockstar Book Tours blog tour for the YA mystery novel from debut author Jessie Weaver, Live Your Best Lie! I’ve got all the details, my review, and a giveaway below, so let’s get started!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Live Your Best Lie (Volume I) (Like Me Block You) author: Jessie Weaver publisher: Melissa de la Cruz Studio release date: 24 January 2023
Sometimes the prettiest Instagram feeds mask the darkest, and bloodiest, secrets. Social media influencer Summer Cartwright leads a very charmed life: millions of followers, the hottest designer and vintage clothes at her fingertips, a newly minted book deal, the coolest friends, and, until recently, the hottest boyfriend at her über-elite prep school. Every moment of her life has been carefully planned and cultivated to complement her “imperfectly perfect” social media persona. She is truly #LivingHerBestLife. But when Summer goes missing during her annual Halloween party and then an unscheduled post appears on her feed stating that she’ll be dead within the next five minutes, those closest to Summer know something isn’t quite right―or on-brand. Grace, Summer’s camera-shy best friend; Adam, Summer’s gamer ex-boyfriend; Laney, Summer’s moody camp roommate; and Cora, an influencer wannabe, all decide to investigate. And when they come upon Summer’s lifeless body, they soon realize that no filter is strong enough to mask the lies we tell ourselves. Told in multiple POVs interspersed with social media posts and flashbacks, Live Your Best Lie has twists and turns that will keep readers turning the page and no one will be able to guess the ending.

My 5-Star Review
Live Your Best Lie is the second book released by the newest Disney-Hyperion imprint, Melissa de la Cruz Studio, and is Jessie Weaver’s debut novel. This YA mystery explores the flip side to the pretty and perfect Instagram feeds of influencers -- the sometimes dark side that most of us never see. I really like how Jessie tells the story, using multiple POVs for our four main suspects, social media posts for our dead influencer victim, and flashbacks to slowly reveal to us exactly what happened. I am an avid reader of mysteries and thrillers, but I admit I did not see the ending coming! I had an idea, as I got towards the end of the book, of what I thought happened, but I was definitely not correct. That is a huge plus in my book, when an author can surprise me on who the murderer is!
I have to say, I think this would be an awesome book for a teen/YA book club to choose, as there is so much in here that would be great fodder for discussion. I don’t want to lay out exactly what those discussion points would be or else I’d give away too much, but suffice it to say that I want to talk to anyone and everyone who’s read it now to talk it all through! So if you pick this one up, please do let me know your thoughts, and let’s discuss everything that’s going on in this book.
Highly recommend Live Your Best Lie for any fan of YA mysteries, as well as anyone interested in explorations of influencer culture and/or social media’s impact on today’s teens.

🕹️ BOOKSTAGRAM TOUR + MINI REVIEW 🕹️ I'm happy today to be taking part in the @jaimerockstarbooktours tour for RETRO by @sofiandjarrod, which releases next Tuesday, Jan 24, from @simonteen! There's a giveaway of a finished copy for the tour too! Is technology good, bad, or neutral? Our intrepid teens are about to find out! I really enjoyed this story about modern, connected teens taking a year-long retro challenge where they can't use any tech created prior to 2000. As a child of the 80s, it was really fun to watch the kids "discovering" all the fun stuff we had and the slower-paced, more disconnected life we lived. There's also a mystery at the heart of the story, which I enjoyed watching Luna and her friends figure out. This is a story you'll fly through and love the ride you're on! (Although I'm still insanely jealous over Axel's vintage Mustang 😅) RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I've included the synopsis in the comments, and you can enter the giveaway via the link in my bio! 🕹️🕹️🕹️ #retro #retrobook #jarrodschusterman #sofíalapuente #simonteen #simonteenbooks #riveted #rivetedbysimonteen #yaliteraturejunkie #yaliterature #yalit #youngadult #youngadultfiction #youngadultbooks #yafiction #yafictionlover #yalove #bookstagramtour #bookstagrammers #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #igreads #igbooks #bookreviewer #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CnmurNArNwp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blog Tour + #Review: NUBIA: THE AWAKENING by Omar Epps and Clarence A. Haynes! #tbrbeyondtours
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog tour for the YA novel from acclaimed actor Omar Epps and author Clarence A. Haynes, Nubia: The Awakening! I’ve got all the book and author details below, along with my review.
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Nubia: The Awakening authors: Omar Epps and Clarence A. Haynes publisher: Delacorte Press release date: 8 November 2022
From beloved actor and producer Omar Epps and writer Clarence A. Haynes comes the biggest epic fantasy of the year. A powerful saga of three teens, the children of refugees from a fallen African utopia, who must navigate their newfound powers in a climate-ravaged New York City. Perfect for fans of Black Panther and Children of Blood and Bone. For Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho, Nubia is a mystery. Before they were born, a massive storm destroyed their ancestral homeland, forcing their families to flee across the ocean to New York City. Nubia, a utopic island nation off the coast of West Africa, was no more, and their parents’ sorrow was too deep for them to share much of their history beyond the folklore. But New York, ravaged by climate change and class division, is far from a safe haven for refugees, and Nubians live as outcasts, struggling to survive in the constantly flooding lower half of Manhattan, while the rich thrive in the tech-driven sky city known as the Up High. To many, being Nubian means you’re fated for a life plagued by difficulties and disrespect. But Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho are beginning to feel there might be more. Something within them is changing, giving each of them extraordinary powers. Extraordinary and terrifying powers that seem to be tied to the secrets their parents have kept from them. And there are people Up High watching, eager to do anything they can to become even more powerful than they already are. Now Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho will be faced with the choice–do they use their inheritance to lift their people, or to leave them behind. The fate of their city, and their people, hangs in the balance.

My 3-Star Review
I’ve been so excited for Nubia: The Awakening since I first heard about it. I’m a huge fan of Omar Epps and was excited to see what he and Clarence Haynes had come up with in this afro-futurist YA novel. While I enjoyed it, it was definitely a case of wanting to love it more than I actually did.
This novel deals with some important societal topics: racism, classism, climate change, oligarchy, and over-policing. It was interesting to see these dealt with in a near-future society. In a lot of ways, on the surface this book reminded me of Ballad & Dagger by Daniel Jose Older: near-future or alternate timeline NYC, refugees from an African or Afro-Caribbean island that no longer exists, parents who refuse to talk about where they came from, and teens discovering they have magical powers connected to that disappeared home. Unfortunately, in this book the pacing was off in a way I find hard to describe, and it’s still unclear exactly what these magical powers are. I liked the MCs, though, and the way the novel alternated between the three POVs of Zuberi, Lencho, and Uzochi. I’m hoping the second book will explain and expound on what the teens can and/or should do with their newly-found powers.
Rating: 3 stars

👸 BLOG TOUR REVIEW + GIVEAWAY! 👸 Q: Do you enjoy retellings? If so, do you have a favorite to share? I'm thrilled today to be on the @jaimerockstarbooktours blog + bookstagram tour for THE MAN OR THE MONSTER by @aamna_qureshi, from @camcat_books! This is the follow-up to THE LADY OR THE LION, which I featured a few days ago in my feed. There's a our-wide giveaway you can enter at Book-Keeping blog (link in bio)! This review will be short and sweet so as not to spoil *anything* from this incredible series. I was able to binge these back-to-back, and I loved both THE LADY OR THE LION and THE MAN OR THE MONSTER! In the first book we met Durkhanai and her royal family and watched her fall in love -- only to be forced to send her lover through “the trial,” in which he must pick from one of two doors, behind which waits either a lady he will then marry (which means he’s innocent) or a lion (which means he’s guilty). This book is based on the short story “The Lady, or the Tiger?” and is set in a Pakistan-inspired world that was amazing to visit. At the end of the first book, Durkhanai has sent her lover off to be either married to another woman or killed by a lion, in either situation meaning she loses him forever. In THE MAN OR THE MONSTER, Durhkanai must come to terms with her decision and the impacts it has on her and those around her. It was amazing to watch Durkhanai come into her own, realize who she is as a person, and determine whether she will continue things as they have always been or if she can be and do better for her people than her grandparents and rulers before them. I absolutely love this duology (I believe it’s just a duology) and would recommend it to anyone who loves retellings and YA fantasy in general! 🍵 THE BOOK OF TEA SERIES 🍵 I'm sick today, so instead of a long caption...just enjoy this gorgeous pin that was a pre-order incentive for the second in The Book of Tea series by @judyilinauthor! Isn't it gorgeous? 😍 (Swipe to see a close-up) So, yeah, my kiddo and I have been sick since Friday, fighting some kind of rhinovirus (we've both tested negative for C-19 twice, so there's that at least). So I've been down for the count! I actually feel my worst today, and he's stayed home from school again for the second day. But hopefully today will be the worst, and then we'll be on the upswing! Q: Since that means we did absolutely nothing this weekend, tell me how *your* weekend was! Or, if you've read this series, what did you think? 🍵 🍵 🍵 #thebookoftea #thebookofteaduology #judyilin #judyilinauthor #amagicsteepedinpoison #avenomdarkandsweet #yaliteraturejunkie #yaliterature #yalit #yalovin #yalove #yabookstagrammer #yabooks #yabookseries #yabookstagram #youngadult #youngadultfiction #youngadultbooks #readdiversebooks #readdiversely #readdiverse #bookstagrammers #Bookstagrammer #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #booknerd #booknerds #booklovers #booklover https://www.instagram.com/p/CispFE2Lwh3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🎉 I won this awesome giveaway prize from @ericawatersbooks and it arrived while we were on vacation. I'm so excited to read both THE GATHERING DARK and THE RESTLESS DARK! TGD is a collection of folk horror short stories 😱 and TRD is the story of three girls attending an event sponsored by a true crime podcast where they're competing to find the bones of the Cloudkiss Killer! How amazing do they both sound?! You can swipe to see the lovely inscription Erica did for me in TRD (she also signed her short story in TGD!). Thank you SO much, Erica!! Q: Do you enter authors' giveaways? Have you ever won anything? . . . . #therestlessdark #thegatheringdark #ericawaters #ericawatersbooks #shortstories #shortstory #anthology #folkhorror #folkhorrorbooks #folkhorrorbook #folkhorrorfiction #yaliteraturejunkie #yaliterature #yalit #yalove #youngadult #youngadultfiction #youngadultbooks #booklovers #booklove #booklover #fictionfriday #fictionfridays #bookstagrammers #bookstagramit #Bookstagrammer #bookstagram #booknerd #booknerds #BookKeepingBlog https://www.instagram.com/p/CiSyaUJLzBF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

💗 SPREADING THE LOVE 💗 I don't know how many of y'all know this, but @summerscourtney is my FAVORITE author. Of all time. And I'm old, so I've read a LOT of authors! Anyway, I asked (okay, perhaps desperately pleaded 😅) in one of my chat groups if anyone had an ARC of I'M THE GIRL they'd be willing to trade, and darling Yara @traveling_through_the_pages came through!! And she sent me the latest from @goldywrites too, whose books I've also loved (if you haven't read THE MARY SHELLEY CLUB, do yourself a favor!). I literally squealed when I opened the package, y'all, I am not ashamed to admit! Anyway, here's to spreading the love on bookstagram, sending treasures to folks you know will love them, sharing your love for books with other fellow book nerds. BOOK PEOPLE ARE THE BEST PEOPLE, hands down. 💗 💗 💗 #courtneysummers #courtneysummersauthor #imthegirl #goldymoldavsky #lordoftheflyfest #wednesdaybooks #henryholtbfyr #yamystery #YAfiction #yalove #yaliteraturejunkie #yaliterature #yalit #yalovin #bookstagrammers #bookstagram #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagrammersunite #bookpeoplearethebestpeople #bookpeople #booknerd #booknerds #booklovers #amreading #amreadingya https://www.instagram.com/p/CgmhJvsLNo_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
