So i FINALLY finished agggtm.

I'll be honest with you the first 50% was sloooow for me it took me like days to reach halfway. But once I got to the other half i was HOOKED. Literally finished it in one sitting .

I gave it 3 🌟

It was a very unique writing and the story was captivating ( atleast the second half for me)

Ravi Singh the man that you are. He wasn't heavily featured or anything yet I'm down bad for him.

Pippa was ok ,she does have some irrational impulse where she doesn't think before her actions though.

I was literally screaming DON'T DRINK IT!!!

I was hesitant to start this series, thinking it would be like One of us is lying. I DID NOT like the book at all.

But it was sooo much better.

Can't wait to start the second book.

The Giggle

Not the most exciting of these specials, considering it has the biggest moment. Not too bothered by bi-generation honestly, it makes sense for the Doctor to get a well deserved break, whilst also running off to save the universe some more. I've read about the implications that it affects previous Doctors too which I'm not wild about. Neil Patrick Harris is delightful doing a bad German accent and dancing to the Spice Girls, but he gets defeated somewhat easily. I like the real history with John Logie Baird's puppet. The Avengers-style UNIT HQ is a bit ridiculous. Lovely to have Mel back, RTD definitely has a bigger plan for her. The puppet retelling about previous companion deaths was horrifyingly true. Lots of little references to the show's past was great . Donna doesn't do much this episode actually but lovely to have her family adopt the Doctor. David gets to do some shouty bits but then also gets to show loving emotions. Pity he didn't get longer to hang around for more episodes, but he's done his proper stint already - I hope he doesn't cameo back really. Ncuti Gatwa doesn't get enough time to shine to give us a proper impression, but I appreciate he got to do it all without pants on.

my first read of the year (and my first dostoevsky)

i thought this mini collection captured loneliness, introversion, love, longing, and the desire to escape in such a profound manner. by focusing on interaction and human connection, dostoevsky explores the human psyche through our inherently social nature. no matter how introverted one is, the desire to connect persists.

ultimately, we're all just trying to be a little less lonely.

3.5* rounded down. nothing wrong with this book at all except... i don't know... i'm hesitant to say it was mid, but after i turned the last page i was left thinking "...huh."

there's a lot i liked here. i think the premise was really cool and timely; gentrification of black communities is something that's happening quickly and often (not just in the US where the book was set, but also where i live in the UK). it's definitely clearly come as part of the ripple effect caused by get out, which is not a bad thing as it still manages to feel unique. it kept me engaged, and really picks up pace around the last 25% after a period of slow build and heightening tension. i liked the main character's (sydney) motivations and backstory, and how the author takes us on a journey of uncovering who she is and who she's become. i didn't looove her as a character, but i liked how she was crafted. and i enjoyed the focus on her moreso than on theo (as this is written from a dual perspective).

as for everything else... i guess a lot of it just left me unmoved, it was all just okay. i didn't care for the romance between sydney and theo, it was unnecessary and took away from the plot and i didn't even like them together all that much. as well as that, of all the ways the author could've chosen to end the book, the one she picked was certainly a choice. i think this is what ultimately made me push this down to a 3* rather than rounding up to 4*.

do i think it's worth the read? sure, if you're looking for something tense and creepy (given the season), i would say go for it. it's not groundbreaking but it's short enough and holds up well enough overall.

review:

positives - fast paced and an interesting plot. the fact that i actually finished the book is a big deal because the reading slump has been very real. female rage and eat the rich motifs which i'm always on board with. negatives - the mc had a vague “not like the other girls” aura which I was not vibing with (seriously we’re still doing that in 2023????) along with vaguely misogynistic and classist statements which I was obviously not a fan of. i wish the motifs i talked about before would have been done with more tact. anyway all my moral qualms aside, the plot was great…right until the end when it pulled a verity and took a nose dive. so...yeah. not really into that. in conclusion - i think 3 stars is a more than fair rating. most likely won't re-read.
