I have been upset for decades how badly the Israeli government has been treating Palestinians. I have been upset for decades at the violent being applied to all sides in the Levant.

And I am going to say this knowing that I have Jewish followers / readers:

If you are hating Palestinians, who ARE in the world's largest open-air prisons...you are part of the problem. Just as much as the extremists in Hamas, the extremists in Al-Qaeda, the extremists in the Proud Boys. YES I JUST WENT THERE, COMPARING PALESTINE-HATERS TO MODERN-DAY NATZEES.

Literally, the way how the Israeli government (not the average Jew but the Israeli Government) pigeonholes people, literally putting on their government issued identification their race, ethnicity, religion, and then dehumanizing so many people...

...That is exactly how Natzee Germany's Government treated Jews, Gays, Romani, and Disabled People in the 1930s-1945.

I saw the government-issued IDs in Israel when I visited. I learned how hundreds of thousands of people were being treated--are still being treated--and I couldn't stand it.

I couldn't change the way Israel is run. Just one person, just one fat white person, just an American tourist at the time.

The only practical thing I could do was come home and talk about it.

I felt threatened going into and out of Bethlehem, and I was an American tourist in a bus with a whole bunch of Christan tourists bringing much-needed money into the nation.

Do you know who I felt threatened by?

The Israeli soldiers who boarded our bus, checked our passports and our faces, and were standing ready to shoot us all dead. "Just In Case."

Because of a situation their own government set up, and enforces.

And yes, I know I'm never going back to Israel, especially if anyone in their government sees this and reports it.

I support Jews. I support Muslims. I support innocent civilians.

That includes the vast majority of Palestinians.

I see them as people, too.

There are few things I love more than a good intergenerational story, particularly those that model great relationships between grandparents and grandkids. Zachary Hyman's "The Magician's Secret" (2017), magnificently illustrated by Joe Bluhm, is a new favourite in that genre. Reminiscent at first of the beloved "Song and Dance Man" by Karen Ackerman in that it centers on a grandfather's recounting his adventures during quality time spent with his grandson, this book takes a turn away from realistic-but-entertaining memories and instead veers off into the fantastic. It's a beautiful exploration of imagination and the magic of shared adventures through storytelling.
