You keep smiling as everything has finally worked out, and I'm terrified that it's the truth. Terrified we won't have long, I want to grab your hand and run before fate finds us. Before they know what breaths I take and can't afford to pay back. There's that goddamn laughter again, and I feel it in my skin. It feels so careless and natural that I almost lose my cool. You must know something I don't. I promised myself I would remain solitary, that love could not flow through me so deeply anymore. You're making fun of my fear. I instantly look around and pull my hand from yours. But you snicker as you shake your head. Two fingers twirl underneath my chin as you bring your lips onto mine without hesitation. So much purpose. I've never been kissed like this. It's not the first time I've kissed a woman. William S. Burroughs: A Man Within review by Kaja Popko
William S. Burroughs: A Man Within explores the life of a Beat writer who was arguably the grittiest and most bedeviling of the group. Despite his association with punk and grunge, Burroughs's work was lyrically plaintive and his voice provided a window to his ineffable sadness. The documentary features interviews with Burroughs and his admirers, but they frustratingly only alight on his literary significance when speaking in terms of personal influence. Leyser attempts to equate Burroughs's gun fetishism with Hunter S. Thompson's recklessness, but Burroughs's most accomplished fiction was the boiling run-off of his inner-demon-induced sweat. Burroughs epitomized the 20th-century ideal of the over-educated libertine and forever changed the conversation about sexual orientation, but his last boyfriend recounts an evening where he confessed his love, only to be laughingly dismissed. A Man Within persuasively argues that Burroughs's most dangerous addiction might have been the refusal of love.

Tales From the Velvet Trap - Sapphic Historical Fiction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My newest short story series completes next week. The first story is free. All on Medium. I also paint the covers for the stories.
Tales From The Velvet Trap is a series set in Prohibition-era Chicago, following the lives of Vivian and Violet. Vivian, deeply rooted in the city's underground with her mob ties, exudes dominance and complexity, while Violet, a housewife, is drawn into an unexpected affair that shakes the foundations of her life. Their narrative unfolds in the seedy glamour of a speakeasy where jazz, gin, and illicit desires swirl together. As Violet struggles with her newfound cravings and fears, Vivian continues to wield power and seduction, making every encounter a play for control. The series navigates themes of forbidden love, power dynamics, and the quest for personal freedom, all while portraying the risks of living authentically in a time of societal constraints.
Secrets of the Velvet Trap is the sequel series coming in the spring.
Excerpt
Violet had never danced with a woman. She had never been so close to another woman, never felt another woman’s body against hers or the gentle pressure of a woman’s hands on her hips. With her unapologetically masculine charm, Vivian stirred a longing so unsettling, and yet so enticing, that Violet feared she would go mad.
Her mind shouted at her to leave, warned that everyone was watching her. Her cheeks heated as she realized everyone would know what kind of woman she was. But her body obeyed Vivian, and she gave herself over to the slow rhythm, bathed in the warm glow of amber lights. She moved with a mixture of desire and fear and wondered, as she often did, how could she feel such an attraction to such an aberration.
The enticing scent of musky cologne and Vivian's warm breath on her neck confused her. When Vivian kissed her neck, nuzzled her ear, and drew their hips together, Violet began to tremble. She lost her breath, and then gasped to retrieve it.
“I’m not like you,” she managed to whisper.
Vivian forced her mouth against Violet’s resisting lips until they finally yielded.

🪄📖 Happy Book Release Day to T.J. Klune's Under the Whispering Door!📖🪄 T.J. Klune's Under the Whispering Door is a complex work of contemporary fantasy which tells the story of recently deceased lawyer Wallace Price who struggles to understand life beyond the death of his uninspired and disappointing life as one of the living. The reaper Mei escorts him to a curious tea shop manned by the ferryman Hugo and his ghostly grandfather Nelson and ghost service dog Apollo. This tea shop was a "waiting station" for those like Wallace, where he would need to come to terms with his death and be ready to move on to whatever was next. This was easier said than done, especially with his growing attraction to Hugo and grudging fondness for Mei, Nelson and Apollo. The subject matter of this novel is weighty and potent, and the author tries to infuse levity and whimsy in its treatment, even as he navigates difficult questions about life, death, living, the purpose of life, and so on. The moments of humour in the story do not detract from the gravity of its subject but serves to highlight the same. While grief and coming to terms with grief is one of the underlying themes of the novel, regret and repentance are key to the action of the story. To the age old moral dilemma, what is the point of being good or bad in life in the face of the inevitability of death, Under the Whispering Door offers the simple yet reassuring response: "Because it's YOUR life ... It is what you make of it." 4/5 🌟 and full review on #goodreads of the #ARC of this book via #NetGalley #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #bookarc #bookrelease #newbook #newrelease #tjklune #underthewhisperingdoor #advancedreaderscopy #booklover #contemporaryfantasy #fantasy #whimsical #queerfantasy #queerliterature #lgbtcommunity #thegoodplace #amancalledove #bookcommunity #newbookstagram #2021books #september2021 #septemberreads #fallreading #fallbooks #fallready https://www.instagram.com/p/CUG1nx8LxzC/?utm_medium=tumblr

The List
I have a list of things I have yet to do.
You are on it.
I never cross them off even when they’re half through because there’s only ever truth in ending—You
And I
Are unfinished.
Unfastened.
A shelving unit from ikea that collapses the minute you stack the last book on it.
The bungee on its way back —
down!
Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod
Again.
And again.
And again.
A room for two bleeding like a beacon of light trapped in place
Unfastened but upright
And all these fucking rocks orbiting us like goddamn could you guys calm the fuck down!?
Down.
Softer now.
She held me down when every instinct in my body said ravish this girl.
Attack what she holds dear—
Crash into a world that was never mine to begin with.
And I’d reach and breathe deep
And she’d drip into my lungs.
I’m puddled
Befuddled by this inability to resist—
Disgruntled when she’d wave the tip of her finger at me
“Tisk... tisk...”
And I’d nod...
“Yes ma’am.”
And each breath caught on the hooks of each hanger in her closet
Reaching depths that taught me I couldn’t stand if I lost it.
So I drove.
I rode as far as my bike would let me
And on no sleep, half lidded eyes I slid into my driveway begging the rain to pour one more out for me.
This fucking woman!
Like honey to a hive.
I’m buzzing.
Loving you was never easy.
It was always a fucking catastrophe
And I’m not talking birds and bees
But it would fucking sting.
Every time I’d turn out of your driveway and onto the highway
Every dime I spent trying not to cry that day.
Trying to behave like the adult I became before you came along and now I’m all of a sudden eight.
Jesus Christ!
I’d burst into tears if it even looked like rain.
A kaleidoscopic array of things I didn’t say.
Like when I said, “go.”
But I was begging you to stay.
Fuck!
I didn’t even think you were gay!
And then one day I’m looking for my glasses because I thought I packed everything away and when I got on my bike to drive away you were there.
Standing like a silent prayer.
Holding out my glasses with sleep still on your face.
And I died a little.
Because I was so sure I’d never see you again.
And then one day you’re in that same coffee shop next to the arcade where I stood in place with cement for boots. I couldn’t pivot or shift my eyes away.
In awe of you.
So I have this list...
And I’ve been thinking about crossing you off of it.
But we aren’t through.

"With some people, the minute you start talking, it feels like you've known them for years. It only means that you were supposed to meet sooner. You're feeling all the time you should've known each other, but didn't. That time still counts. You can definitely feel it."
