My 5-Star Review

In 2020, despite owning all of her already released books and pre-ordering all forthcoming ones, I finally read Joanna Ruth Meyer for the first time when I participated in a tour for Beyond the Shadowed Earth (you can read my review here). Because I have a compulsion to read whichever book was written first, even if they are companion novels and it’s not absolutely necessary, I started with Beneath the Haunting Sea and then moved to Beyond. I absolutely loved both of those books, so I couldn’t wait for Wind Daughter to be released so I could read Echo North and then Wind Daughter back to back. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance to participate in this tour!

There is just something special about Joanna’s writing that evokes a sense of comfort and nostalgia and...I don’t quite know how to put it, but “oldness” is what comes to mind. She definitely has a way of writing that evokes old-fashioned fairy tales, a sort of gentle, soft, lyrical manner of laying out the story. It’s really hard to explain, but I hope that kind of makes sense. That’s not to say the characters don’t go through some really tough times! They absolutely do; but like with old fairy tales, that’s where their strength and courage end up coming from.

You don’t have to read Echo North before reading Wind Daughter, as Joanna does summarize the story of Echo at the beginning of Wind. In Echo we met Ivan, the former North Wind, who gave up his power to be with his mortal wife and their little baby, Satu. Ivan helps Echo on the most important part of her journey, heading north to the Wolf Queen’s domain. Wind Daughter occurs some years later, when Satu is just past her 17th birthday and is, needless to say, Satu’s story. Satu is depicted as an empath, I think, being able to feel the emotions of those around her, which incapacitates her at times (she spends a lot of the story crying!). She also stays alone with her parents at the top of their mountain, very rarely going down to the village; when she is around other people, she has what I think are anxiety or panic attacks, which she doesn’t know how to handle. Needless to say, at times she is very lonely, and I really felt for her in her anxiety at being around other people.

I’m not going to get into the plot here, but suffice it to say that just like Echo, Satu must travel long and far on her quest in order to save the world--and herself. I absolutely loved the Winter Lord, the Jokull, even though he was decidedly not a nice guy! I definitely questioned some of Satu’s choices, but you have to keep remembering how naive and empathic she is. I hope that you’ll pick this up and follow along on Satu’s journey. Will she save the world? Will she save the boy she loves? Will she figure out who she is and come into her full power? You have to read Wind Daughter to find out!

🐚 THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY 🐚 Have you watched the series adaptation of the book by @jennyhan on Amazon?? Oh. My. Gosh. It is one of, if not *the*, best book to TV adaptations I have ever seen. It's so good, y'all! The actors are incredibly talented, the story is perfectly told, the emotions it will induce in you are deeply felt. It's absolutely magical!! I loved everything about it and when I finished (sobbing, mind you--I was *sobbing*), I wanted to just go back and start it all over again 😍 I had read the first book a few years ago and loved it so much, but I had not continued on for some reason. Well let me tell you, the *second* I finished watching, I immediately worked to rectify that by snatching up the next two books in the series. I can't wait to read them and continue the story with Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, Stephen, Taylor, and the rest. Seriously, if you haven't read any of these books or watched the series, I highly recommend you do. ⛈️ #mondayblues💙 ⛈️ It's kind of hard to portray in a picture, but it's pouring rain here and thundering like crazy, and boy is this weather ever appropriate for my mood today (and for the past few days). I'm just depressed and angry - well, full of rage, to be exact - and I just couldn't find it in me to post a pretty book picture today, so...here's what I've got. I've had to stay off social media for the most part since the news about #roevwade broke on Friday, as I needed some mental health days. I'm still in a pretty bad place, but I'll be back with more rage than depression soon, ready to get active and do whatever I can to overturn this tragedy. Can we talk about my love and adoration for @ashleywinsteadbooks a minute?? I swear everything she writes is absolute perfection. First we read IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE last fall for #getthrilledbuddyreads, which was perfection. Then when I saw she had a romance coming out I will readily admit I was a little skeptical, because how hard must it be to go from a twisty, dark thriller to a rom-com?? But I never should've doubted her (I'm sorry Ashley!) -- because FOOL ME ONCE?! It's 💫perfection💫! The chemistry, the sexual tension, the steaminess, the banter -- all those normal rom-com bits are great. But then you add in the political setting (I'm a politics junkie) and the fact that our heroine, just like in IMDIHAK, is what folks often disparagingly call an "unlikeable female character" but which I affectionately call "f*cking reality because women, like all humans, are flawed" -- these things just lift it to the level of an *incredible* book for me. This incredible book releases next Tuesday, 1 Feb 2022, from @inkyardpress @wednesdaybooks [quick side note: you can get 25% off right now if you preorder through Barnes & Noble!]. I will put the synopsis in the comments, but let me just tell you that this is one YA thriller that you are definitely going to want to read. Now, I knew who the villain was pretty early on, but it really didn't even matter to me because the book was so propulsive that I couldn't stop reading. The crazy "games" and the diabolical plan were so intricate and well-thought-out, I was in awe of the planning Ms. Urban obviously had to do in setting this up. She thought of absolutely everything! I stayed up until 3am the second night of reading because I literally. Could. Not. Stop. I just had to get to the end! Now, admittedly the end wrapped up fairly tidily, but that's kind of to be expected, I think, and I'm okay with it. There's also a wee teaser that perhaps they could be a continuation of the story, and I am here for it! Basically, if you're a fan of YA thrillers, or any intricate thriller really, you should absolutely check out THESE DEADLY GAMES. Get your preorder on, or ask your library to order it! 🍿 BOOK MAIL IS THE BEST MAIL! 🍿 I have been meaning to post this for a while now, so here I am finally doing so! How awesome is this box I received from @booksforwardpr and @christopherparkerwrites for his debut novel, THE LIGHTHOUSE?? There was a cap, a postcard, a recipe (😋), a ticket to the Seabrook Lighthouse Festival, a box of Froot Loops-flavored popcorn, *and* the book! 🏮 BOOK REVIEW 🏮 I reviewed THE KEEPER OF NIGHT by @kylieleebaker on my blog yesterday for the @inkyardpress in-house blog tour, and what an absolute delight it was! You can find the full 5⭐ review at the blog (link in bio), but I'll say here that it's dark and gritty and I loved it so much. It's steeped in Japanese lore/mythology - if you love the anime and manga dealing with shinigami, you'll love this - and it's an excellent examination of the feelings of never wholly belonging that a lot of bi- or multi-racial people feel. Please pick this one up!! It's so good, and I can't wait to see what comes next for Ren.
