I have set many goals for 2023 and I believe that none of them are too wild to be comfortably achieved BUT I do need consistency and I thought to myself what better place than tumblr to find help with it 🤪

I'm starting from zero with this blog and I'll love to find people with which I can share my interests, with also the hope that we can help each other with our new year's resolutions!!

You can call me miazena (or any other variations of this nick), I love listening to music (pop, kpop, indie/alternative, pop punk) and singing, reading (even if I'm in a sort of reading slump) and sometimes writing as well. I recently learned that cooking relaxes me and I probably should look more into it 👀

For 2023 I'll love in general to read more and to reach a reasonable level of fluency in the languages I'm learning.

My favourite genres are fantasy/sci-fi, historic fiction, thriller/mistery, but I'm open to almost everything. I would love to incorporate more classics, feminist non-fiction, as well as manga/comics/graphic novels/webtoon/webcomics.

Some books I loved (in recent memory) are: the poppy war trilogy, the long way to a small angry planet, kitchen, the left hand of darkness.

Right now I'm learning Spanish and Mandarin and I would like to be B2/C1 and at HSK4 for the end of the year.

It’s been a while since I did a reading update, here it goes~

My life took too many turns in the last two weeks so I think I’m finally settling into it now. That means I’m in the middle of lots of things and reading takes me a lot longer than it usually did (that’s what happens when work begins, sighs).

I’ve been in and off If We Were Villains for a couple months now, which made me confused about keeping track of characters and what’s going on with them. I’m about one third in (34%) and it’s finally picking up. I’m curious, very interested in it, to which side the bomb is going to drop and how bad the consequences will be :B I love the writing! It’s a good surprise, I love the theater plays aspects it has in its prose, incredibly well crafted.

Another book that’s taking me a while to get into is Book of Night by Holly Black. I’m around 50 pages into it and so far I’m not as captivated as I expected. What I like about it are the shadows. I love stories that mess with shadows, the whole concept of magical shadows, how it interferes with people’s lives… that’s the excitement in it for me. The characters for now are very, very meh :/

In the meantime I’m listening to Parachutes by Kelly Yang. As I often do, I knew nothing about it before jumping in, and it’s not going where I expected. The life of rich kids is kinda boring most of the time lol I like that it shows different characters and the difficulties they face. It’s done in a double narrative, Claire and Dani, and follows their path in school, their different lifestyles, friends, but also mutual interests. I’m 53% into the audiobook and they’re not very tight friends yet, which is… different. Idk, overall it’s a nice thing to listen to and get distracted, not a story I’m suuuuper involved in. Too much money lol

Those are my main focus right now. To the side I have two slow buddy readings going on, In Deeper Waters and Cytonic (which is in a deargod pause, I need time to process what’s going on there o_o)

I hope to get to an Italian book soon, I need to keep practicing my language skills c: I’ll see where that goes soon c;

Hello! I’m almost done my buddy read of Let Me In by @rmvirtues with @queerlyreading and I’m really loving it so far! I plan to finish it today during my commute home and I’m so excited to see how everything wraps up. This is a guaranteed five stars once I finish! Dio and Athena have such amazing chemistry both in and out of the bedroom, re-affirming my stance on friends-to-lovers being an amazing dynamic. I’ve definitely been taking my time with this one, compared to how I flew through the first two, but that’s entirely the formatting rather than the book itself. My brain has a hard time processing the amount of empty space in these pages, but I love reading these books physically too much to switch formats! I have to be able to tab and annotate! Do you use tabs or annotate your physical books? I have been doing a #buddyread with my good friend Melanie of 7 years, with Akemi Bowman's fantastic "Harley In The Sky"! I definitely would recommend this novel to anyone who is bored; either with their current reading pallet or who wants to try a buddy read of their own. It's fun, fresh, and definitely worth your valuable reading time!

🧜🏻‍♀️ BOOK CLUB MINI REVIEW 🧜🏻‍♀️😩 BREATHE AND COUNT BACK FROM TEN by @nataliasylv was the July read for the #chronicallyiconicbookclub and man, WHAT A READ! We had the absolute best discussion, and every single one of us (some who have chronic illness/pain or disabilities, and some who don't) saw something of ourselves and our experiences in it. Vero is a child of Peruvian immigrants who was born with hip dysplasia. This means she has lived with multiple surgeries and tons of pain in her life. Her parents sacrificed and struggled to bring her and her sister to America (Florida) for better healthcare and other opportunities. She loves to swim and has a dream to be in the show at Mermaid Cove near where she lives, a dream of which her parents do not approve (look closely at Vero's shadow on the cover and you'll see 🧜🏻‍♀️!). This book is all about growing up and out of the boxes into which our parents sometimes want to put us, finding our own way and speaking up with our authentic voices, exploring sexuality and first love, living as an immigrant but also an American and straddling the two worlds, AND dealing with chronic pain and disability and all that entails (the doctors visits Vero had were so very familiar to many of us in the group). I loved this book so much, and I flagged so many quotes and passages that spoke to me (you can swipe to see one of them). I cannot recommend this book highly enough -- it will absolutely make my top ten reads of the year, if not top five. I want *everyone* to pick this one up! If you do, definitely let me know your thoughts. My HR manager saw this on my table one time and told me that this book would stay with me long after I’ve read it and now that I’ve finished it, I know it’s true. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Read this book as a buddy read hosted by @readswithyenny and @bookish.gemini Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book has been so emotional I don’t know how to describe it. We’re supposed to finish the book next week but it’s just so good I couldn’t stop reading it. A lot of the societal issues presented in this book are still rampant today, considering that it was published in 2003. 20 years passed and we still see the same problems in different forms. No wonder this book is a classic. I can’t say it’s a rollercoaster of emotions because it’s not. It’s somber, the colour of the cover is exactly the way I saw the book unfold in my imagination. I might be able to write a better review in the future but for now, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. ✨Book Review✨ Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This was again a buddy read with @the.reading.potato I am glad she told me of this book and i decided to pick this one up. This book is so warm, charming, witty, humorous and at the same time deals with serious representation like discovering one’s sexual orientation, OCD, Stress and anxiety disorders. In my opinion, it is difficult to deal with such heavy topics in the book while maintaining the contemporary romance charm and Alison Cochrun did a very fine job at it. All the characters were loveable tbh. I loved all the side characters. Dev and Charlie were obviously the charm here but Dev’s crew was such a colourful bunch, not to mention each of them had to deal with their own demons which came out in the form of micro narratives while chastising Charlie or Dev on multiple occasions. It was so good to see things put into perspectives. NGL, there are quite a few things to take away from this book, most of all is prioritising your own mental health and people around you not being mad at you for that. The whole Dev and Charlie practice date was fun to read about. Not to mention there were a few funny scenes about the set and shooting too. I loved how Charlie opened up to Dev and vice versa. There blooming into each other (which reminds me of Bloom into you anime that i need to watch 😋) was a thing to see. I loved the queer and mental health representation in this book so much. Definitely a recommendation irrespective of the Pride month celebration!! Happy Sunday !
