The core issue with Isle of Dogs' use of language is that it was made for a monolingual English-speaking audience.

It's not made of monolingual English-speaking and bilingual (Japanese and English-speaking) audiences. Nor was it made for the general US audience as well as the general Japanese audience.

The Japanese language is not meant to be understood by anyone, either having English speakers translate it or leaving the audience to infer what is being communicated. The spoken English translation often overlays the spoken Japanese. Not even basic Japanese is used for the benefit of English-speaking audiences, only English words from Japanese speakers. Then written Japanese is set dressing. If it's not translated, it goes by so fast that if you understand it, you don't have the time to read it. Then the dogs all have standard English dog names with tags that are written in English. And you know, the whole thing where the dogs, our main characters, speak English.

The movie is designed in such a way that translating to Japanese is impossible without being uniquely awkward.

While there must be much to enjoy if you understand both, the movie does not just favor English, it others Japanese.

When it comes to the movie's use of language, every related issue branches from this and every potential praise has to contend with it.

And yes, there are movies made for both domestic and international audiences as well as ones for both monolingual and bilingual audiences. It can be done.

i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one

his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.

ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

ok yknow what Edit: i shouldve made it even more explicit at the end of this post, i hadnt thought i would need to since i started the post with this, but i think a few too many people are missing my point so i just wanna clarify. i shouldnt have said 'really clashed' and left it at that because yeah they did, but it wasnt just their opposite methods of communication, it is also very much that toshiro was experiencing microaggressions via laios. it may have been unintentional on laios's part, but it still happened and wore him down, made it harder for him to communicate on top of both the more subtle social cues that he was raised with and his own communication difficulties. i also want to say that the fandom reaction to toshiro and the complete ignorance of this point is also racist tbh or at the very least ignorant. i understand that the anime did not cover this panel, and neither did the manga, as this was an omake, but im gonna be real with you guys. there are enough context clues within the story to clue you into this. if you didnt pick up on it thats ok, but i think this is a good lesson in picking up subtext in the stories that youre watching and/or reading. kui shouldnt have to explicitly say 'by the way laios was racist to toshiro' for this point to be understood, and at the very least, when the author portrays a character in a sympathetic light (as kui clearly does) it should make you question Why they are doing so and what makes them sympathetic, rather than youre immediate and only reaction to be 'well i hated what this guy did/said so i hate them and they suck'. idk exactly how to finish this, just. idk. question your biases and gut reactions to things you see in media and stories, and think about whether or not theres subtext that youre missing.

Okay, so I put too much thought into this and now I am going to waste your time talking about it. I am going to take the idea that a Black Little Mermaid is offensive seriously in order to properly argue against it. This is not something that needs to be done, but I am doing it anyway because I have a take!

In order for the Little Mermaid (2023) to be offensive for, “not being Danish,” the story would have to be so specifically Danish that removing it from that context would betray its very essence. If that were true, then Disney's first Little Mermaid movie would be offensive because what the hell is Danish about it? Also, there are and have been Danes of color, so you could have an actor of any race and it could still be as Danish.

And (plot twist!) the Little Mermaid short story does not take place in Denmark! The kingdom in the original Little Mermaid is partially defined by its impressive mountain range. Denmark does not have mountains. Denmark is filled with practically flatlands. People would know this if they had read the story and knew even the most basic facts about Denmark.

oh good, I was afraid that wasn't going to read properly and people would just be like "what is this supposed to be". :') but yeah! I like to think Eric was pretty fond of Neige as a kid! single dad sees orphan child approximately the same age as his own son and goes "hmm. okay, you guys are going to be friends now." (this did not go as well as he'd hoped.)

(also I do love how it's kind of a running joke that everyone loves Neige except for Vil, who's standing over in the corner and just seething with furious irrational hatred. someday maybe he'll find someone who doesn't think Neige is the best thing since cinnamon rolls.)
