I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED???? BROOOOOO!!!
OMG YES ANOTHER ONE! WHY DOES NOBODY TALK ABOUT IT??
I've thought about this ever since I first watched the rise movie and I've held back bc the last thing I wanted to do was accuse the rise movie being the same film as the 2012 avengers film. Both are my comfort movies. Both are different films.
BUT HAVING SAID THAT
you can not deny the similarities. If I had a nickel for every movie where--
There is an item that can open portals. At one point in the film, it gets taken by the villain.

Main antagonist arrives through portal created by item

Blue/Red character is in conflict with Red/Blue character. One of them is not taking things seriously and/or regularly goes off on their own.

One of the main characters aids the villain due to mind control

Villain successfully opens portal on top of a very tall tower. Alien reinforcements

Alien threat lays waste to New York City. Hive Mind. US Army is little to no help

Red/Blue character chooses to make the sacrificial play by taking the threat through the portal knowing they won't make it out alive. But at least the world is saved. It's not about them.

A character has to close the portal with the red/blue character trapped on the other side

--I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but weird it happened twice.

There is something so funny to me about "Monster of the Week" format sci-fi and fantasy shows that are stuck in one location, especially when the supernatural is hidden from general society for whatever reason and that location is just not big enough to even have a hope of properly covering any of this stuff up. Like, if weird shit is regularly going down in one corner of New York City, then some people in that neighborhood are still going to notice that something is up, but you can handwave some of the usual "why does anyone with any ability to move still live here?!" due to the fact that it's a big, anonymous city where a lot of people don't really know any of their neighbors very well.
But with smaller towns? Whatever this town may have been originally crafted to be gets transformed and/or retconned by the wild stuff that happens over the course of the show. Sometimes this is purposefully done by the writers and sometimes not! The plot changes the location as much as it does the characters, whether you like it or not!
(I don't mean to say that big cities in sci-fi and fantasy cannot be similarly transformed. The NYC of comic book universes very much becomes a different place with teenage mutant ninja turtles running around fighting demons and people from space. And it's hard to beat what Gotham City has going on! And weird shit does absolutely happen in small towns too! I just think this genre effect is even more pronounced and maybe funnier in smaller towns where these things are supposedly "a secret".)
Sunnydale, California, in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" becomes this place where half of the town have to know about the supernatural or are supernatural themselves. The Hellmouth has changed this place into something that is now in many ways just pretending to be "A Normal Town". And it gets so ridiculous that the show partially acknowledges it by making jokes and going with this flow.
People in Metropolis in "Smallville" must think that Smallville, Kansas, is Secret Meth Lab Central or something with the way that buildings are blowing up and people get killed every few months. The quaint name of this town is doing SO MUCH heavy lifting for its reputation here. Clark Kent says that he's from Smallville in this universe and some people go, "Ha, a real farm boy, huh? Hope you're not finding the big city too tough for you!" and other people must immediately go, "Oh, shit. You've definitely seen a murder victim before." And Clark can only be like, "...Yeah... :("

Writer Spotlight: Rose Sutherland
Rose Sutherland @rosesutherlandwrites is a Toronto-based writer who grew up a voracious reader with an overactive imagination in Nova Scotia (where she once fell off a roof trying to re-enact Anne of Green Gables!). She's been to theatre school in NYC, apprenticed at a pâtisserie in rural France, and currently moonlights as an usher and bartender—in between writing queer folktales, practicing yoga, dancing, singing, searching out amazing coffee and croissants, and making niche jokes about Victor Hugo on the internet. She's mildly obsessed with the idea of one day owning a large dog, several chickens, and maybe a goat. A Sweet Sting of Salt is her debut novel.
Keep reading for more about character arcs in A Sweet Sting of Salt, Rose's favorite fanfic tropes, and some excellent reading recs 👀
Can you tell us about A Sweet Sting of Salt and how you came to write it?
A Sweet Sting of Salt is a queer (f/f) historical reimagining of the classic folktale of the selkie wife, set in 1830’s Nova Scotia. I call it a “reimagining” because while it draws on the folktale, it’s not a retelling of that tale so much as a story playing out in relation to that mythology. I’d wanted to write something centering a love story between two women for a while, but the initial spark came from a Tumblr post! It suggested the idea of selkies testifying before the UN as victims of human trafficking, which reminded me of all the things I disliked about the original folktale and its inherent darkness that is generally glossed over, starting me down the rabbit hole toward finding my own story.
How did you approach research for A Sweet Sting of Salt, and what is a favorite historical fact you learned?
I joke that I did a lot of research by osmosis: I already had a lot of base knowledge about the location, having grown up in Nova Scotia, and then set the story in a period that I’ve been absorbing information about in a low-key way for ages—1832 is also the year of the student rebellion in Les Mis, so I’ve been gleaning tidbits about this era since I first got into the musical and book back in high school. However, I had to do more specific research into things like British divorce law, period midwifery, and animal husbandry. I also visited some small, hyper-local museums on the South Shore that gave me an invaluable glimpse into daily life. I also did some fun practical research into things like “How long does it take to walk from x to y?” and “How cold IS a plunge into this body of water in March?” (Spoiler: Very.)
A fact that fascinated me but didn’t make it into the book was that some early European settlers in the area were granted lands by luck of the draw, pulling from a deck of playing cards: Each card was assigned to a specific 50-acre lot, and whatever you pulled, you were stuck with it.
When we meet them, Jean and Muirin are isolated for different reasons. What do you hope readers still searching for their people take away from A Sweet Sting of Salt?
That there’s always hope. It’s valuable and important to keep reaching out to the world around you, to be open, and not cut yourself off—the biggest reason for Jean’s loneliness at the beginning of this story is the way she has come to keep everyone around her at arm’s length, shutting herself away out of fear, and refusing to let anyone truly get to know her because she thinks that’s the best way to protect herself from being hurt again. Reaching out to others can take a real act of courage, especially if you’ve had bad experiences in the past, but “your people” will reach back to you.
Found family elements play a strong role throughout the novel, within supernatural and mundane settings and across species. Was this something you intended from the beginning, or did this grow out of writing the relationship between Jean and Muirin?
I always intended for Jean to have a found family of this type, which is something that a lot of queer people identify with, but those bonds also got stronger and more meaningful as I wrote, especially once Jean and Muirin began growing into their own family unit—their new relationship and the real danger that comes along with it put pressures on Jean’s other relationships that I hadn’t originally considered. Disagreements with Anneke and Laurie over Jean’s choices arise from their deep concern and love for her, and her own love and care for them, reflected in her responses, is a big part of what made them feel like a real family, for me. Jean and Laurie always having each other’s backs while also being the first to call one another out on their bullshit ended up being one of my favourite dynamics in the whole book.
The selkie myth carries an inherent element of transformation. What is a character transformation you most enjoyed writing, and why?
On a character level, the change in Jean’s worldview following a conversation with her childhood sweetheart meant a lot to me—it heals an old wound for her. I love how grounded and self-assured she is afterward, in spite of the daunting task still ahead of her. But my favourite transformation to write was the antagonist’s mask-off moment, where they directly threaten Jean for the first time. It’s so sly and coded so that only she will understand the menace behind it, a real dun-duh-dunnn moment, which was a lot of fun for me—I also enjoy the foreshadowing elements in that exchange.
This is your debut novel. Did anything surprise you about getting it from manuscript to published book?
Oh my gosh, how LONG it took! After I finished the original draft and decided it was worth attempting to publish, I spent over a year revising based on my own thoughts, input from beta readers, critique partners, and my mentor, Maureen Marshall (whom I connected with through the now defunct Author Mentor Match program, and whose book, The Paris Affair—about a young gay engineer attempting to help Gustave Eiffel secure the funding to build a certain celebrated Parisian landmark— is coming out in May). After that came a full year of querying agents and getting rejected. A lot. People loved Salty but weren’t quite sure what to do with her or where the book would fit in “the market,” which was hard to deal with at the time but is hilarious in retrospect: Salty was snapped up less than a month after she finally went out on submission! But that was back in 2022, and the book is only coming out now. Publishing can be painfully slow.
You’ve written fanfic in the past—do you have a favorite fanfic trope?
I’m not sure either of these counts as a trope, but I adore a character that’s “pure of heart, dumb of ass”, and love a truly unhinged Fanon Explanation For Canon Object. As a longtime Les Mis stan, I ship Tholomyes/Getting Punched. If you know, you know.
Do you have any favorite queer retellings of folktales you can recommend?
Right here on Tumblr, I’m a huge fan of @laurasimonsdaughter, who writes delightful riffs on classic folktales, truly inventive urban fantasy spins on old lore, and her own original folktales.
I’m currently reading Spear, an amazing queer, gender-bent, Arthurian novella by Nicola Griffiths. Anna Burke’s books Thorn and Nottingham are up next on my TBR. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of brilliant queer historicals that aren’t retellings (I recently loved Suzette Meyr’s The Sleeping Car Porter and Heather O’Neil’s When We Lost Our Heads) and wonderful historical retellings that aren’t queer (I highly recommend Molly Greeley’s beautiful, heartbreaking Marvelous, about the real-life couple that inspired Beauty and the Beast). Queer, historical retellings aimed at adults seem to be considered quite niche, still, and can take some digging to find! So, throwing this out to Tumblr: Do you have recommendations for me?
Do you have a writing routine? Is there a place/state of being/playlist you find most conducive to your writing practice?
My routine is chaotic at best, but I find I do my best work earlier in the day, so I usually scribble in my journal while I have breakfast, and then progress to working on my current project as I drink my second cup of coffee. I’m lucky—my day job is an evening gig, which mostly allows me to write on my preferred schedule… but I’ve also been known to have a bolt of inspiration strike at 10pm and dash home to write until well past midnight on occasion. Nothing quite like the hyperfocus zone!
What’s next for you? Are you working on anything you can tell us about?
No official news yet, but I’m currently working on a story set in 18th-century provincial France based on a true unsolved mystery of the past. It has me delving into a very specific branch of French folklore, and I hope future readers will pick up on common threads with one popular fairytale in particular. I’m really excited about where this one is headed, but keeping the details close to my chest for now!
Thank you Rose for taking the time to answer our questions! If you love queer fantasy and old folktales, grab yourself a copy of A Sweet Sting of Salt, and be sure to share your queer folktale reading recs with Rose on @rosesutherlandwrites!

uncle_jezzy Dear fans and followers, I wanted to make a wee community announcement. I couldn’t help but notice that there has been some social animosity of late. It’s becoming increasingly prevalent on my feed. There has been lots of, let’s call it speculation for now, about my private life and relationships.
Now, while I do appreciate the passion and support by those very people who are ‘speculating,’ it has come to such a point that I needed to say something, which in itself is a bad thing. We are living in an age of social enlightenment. More and more, people are realizing that their views may have been blinkered and that they need to expand them to encompass others.
So to you out there who are expressing your disdain and showing your displeasure through a surprising variety of ways, it’s time to stop. I know it can be fun to speculate, to gossip, and to dive into our own personal echo chambers on the internet, but your ‘passion’ is misplaced, and it causes harm to the people I care about most, and I won’t stand for it.

Unpopular opinion it seems… and that’s cool, I’m ok with that. Here’s the deal. Glen is not the villain you all seem to want to make him out to be. Gigi is not the innocent victim she wants to be painted as either. Fandom is so toxic and has such a sheep mentality for real. I know people will come for me and say that I’m blindly defending Glen. Whatever. I am not. I do not know Glen. I do not know what happens in his personal life. What I DO KNOW is that everyone is so quick to point out toxic masculinity…. But it’s crickets when it comes to toxic feminists. Gigi isn’t dumb. She knew how to get exactly what she wanted from this situation and drive the narrative in her favor. She posted and deleted a goodbye to the Powells in November I believe…. Was MIA in Dec and has been in and out since. Their relationship was already on the outs. Little miss was seen getting cozy with a male friend in Miami and NYC and y’all aren’t calling foul on that….. he even tagged and left red hearts for her…. Double standard?? Meanwhile you’re cool will her using Glen and his celeb status to elevate herself and her business while dragging him thru the mud with cheating allegations?? She latched on to fan driven narrative over photos from a RomCom set and turned it to her advantage.
Sending Glen hate, commenting on all posts he’s tagged in, dragging him on all platforms… it’s toxic, unhealthy, uncool, and shows mental instability. I’m not saying doing the same to Gigi would be ok bc it’s not.
I am legit hoping that Glen’s mental health is doing ok and he’s living HIS best life. That man deserves happiness and a healthy relationship because everything I see coming to light from this last one has all sorts of red flags. Is he perfect? No. Is anyone? No. There are WAY more messy celebs in Hollywood that actually would deserve the heat for their actions…. Glen is one of the good ones. He has worked his ass off to get where he’s at and I hate seeing it being tainted by a bitter ex gf trying to stay relevant. Honestly, I also hope Gigi finds happiness bc she’s giving off very bitter, unhappy human vibes.
End Rant.

Daily update post:
Another independent terrorist attack against Israeli civilians was carried out today, this time a vehicular one (where the terrorist tries to ram their vehicle into civilians on the street. This type of terrorist attack was first introduced in Israel, and then imported abroad. The deadliest one so far, was the vehicular terrorist attack in France, where at least 84 people were murdered). That's a small reminder that what happens in Israel, does NOT stay in Israel, and that terrorist attacks against Israelis should very much worry non-Israelis, too. What Hamas did on Oct 7 to our civilians, in their own homes, should terrify everyone, and not just for the sake of the victims. Today's 28 years old Palestinian terrorist, from Hebron, was unsuccessful in hurting anyone, and was eliminated himself.
The IDF has found, among other weapon caches, a truck full of long range rocckets, intended to be fired at Israeli civilians. Yesterday, I read a report that said the amount of weapons found in Gaza is so big, the army couldn't confiscate it all, and deliver it back to Israel, so instead, a lot of these weapons are being destroyed in Gaza itself, for example by running thousands of assault rifles over with tanks.
Tumblr media
It's been reported that the president of MIT was under a lot of pressure from faculty and members of her administratoin to cancel a screening of the IDF's compilation of footage from the Hamas massacre on Oct 7. She insisted on not canceling it, and even attended the screening herself. People who were there, said she looked horrified, and had to look away from the screen at certain points. Will that make a chance in how antisemitism is treated on the MIT campus? I think it's important to listen to Jewish students on whether they see a real change on this. If they don't, she still needs to resign or be fired, just like the president of Harvard, and many other university presidents, who have been allowing antisemitism to thrive on their campuses for years.
Ritchie Torres might be my favorite American politician at the moment. I salute his moral clarity, his willingness to look at the conflict in depth instead of through a simplified prism that de-humanizes Jews, and his courage in speaking up for what's right, for Jewish people, and against antisemitism, even when he might pay a heavy price for that. He's been doing so consistently for years. This post he shared is absolutely horrifying, the 53% who think it should be okay to call for the genocide of Jews is SO telling. I'm grateful to Ritchie for calling this attitude out. If you can, please support him!
Tumblr media
In my daily update post yesterday, I mentioned Jews needing police escort, because of anti-Israel protesters. Here is a Jewish activist speaking about Ayelet Levy, the mother of 19 years old Naama Levy (held hostage by Hamas), who came to NYC to talk about her daughter (you probably saw Naama, she was featured in one of the three most circulated vids of young Israeli women being kidnapped to Gaza on Oct 7), and the meeting was targeted by these anti-Israel protesters. It's pretty clear what has happened to Naama when she was kidnapped, and since. The people who attacked this meeting, who kept Ayelet from speaking for her victimized daughter, are literally working against the victim, and enabling her rapists and abusers. I don't think I have words for how morally distorted this is, all of it...
These are 47 years old Elad Katzir and 79 years old Gadi Mozes.
Tumblr media
I mentioned in my daily update post yesterday, that Hamas released a vid with 3 captive men, to play with the minds and feelings of Israelis, and put even more pressure on our government, to give in. A short while after that, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) released a similar movie, with the two men pctured above. This shows once again how coordinated the Palestinian terrorist organizations in Gaza really are.

You know, I think what's weird to me is that people seem to forget that men are disproportionally victims of random violent crimes and that just gets ignored? Yeah women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault. (Going by statistics of my country and surrouding but it seems to go further) But let's be real, going out at night in any unsafe town or area might end up shit for both regardless of gender. It's just weird to me that people forget that men aren't immune to getting bashed over their heads, or stabbed when out at night. I mean the wording of it by the way, because there's a difference between women can be victims when walking outside at night and the wording that makes it seem like only women get assaulted and like men never have to worry. Idk, I just noticed.
--
I'd seen these crime stats in school and told a male coworker about them years ago when he was blathering on about how I, a woman, must feel unsafe alone at night. (LOL. As if. I wandered all over NYC in the middle of the night with no issues.) He was all "Whaaaat?"
The next day, he showed up with a printout of actual crime stats and went on and on about them in the usual MAN way of assuming I'd been guessing rather than quoting. He seemed rather shaken.
I think a lot of it is that we overemphasize creepers hiding in the bushes to avoid thinking about the fact that a lot of crime against women is by men we know and trust. Dudes just blithely assume they'll be fine and have zero clue how much more likely they are to be the victim of a violent mugging. (Or at least last time I looked at actual crime stats for my area.)

Random Scream 6 thoughts that literally no one asked for:
People say that Tara has no personality, but I think she does---she's a little nerdy, a girl who loves the more thought-provoking, artsy "elevated horror" and genuinely likes studying. She's deliberately framed initially as someone fragile who needs to be protected - extremely petite, asthmatic, the more trusting and softhearted sister in contrast to tall, tough, action-oriented, and super fierce Sam. Yet we see several times that Tara possesses not just strength and courage but real anger in her--it just manifests differently. And as for her caring about 'joining a sorority' and all that---I didn't see that as her truly wanting that as much as she WANTED to want that. When we first reconnect with Tara in Scream VI, she's fiercely in denial and trying to convince everyone and especially herself that she can be a 'normal' person who has a typical college experience. Through Scream 6, she sheds that comforting delusion and adapts to her reality.
I think Danny conveniently had a huge ladder in his tiny NYC apartment because he's some kind of law enforcement agent or private investigator who was initially assigned to watch over the Woodsboro victims by conveniently living just across from them - until he fell in love with Sam. Okay, fine, so I don't TRULY believe this as much as I just head canon it for a fanfic I want to write, but you get the idea :)
Chad/Tara and Sam/Danny are both adorable, and instead of going through the endless roller coaster of breakups and makeups that Gale/Dewey did, I want them to remain together...or at least stay alive for a few more films :)
Chad is actually one of the very best characters of the whole Scream franchise imo.
Sorry, but the movie totally reeled my sappy self in with the found family "Core four" stuff, and I care more about their friendships with one another than I ever did about any of Sidney's friendships.
I don't necessarily LIKE that Gale (another of the franchise's very, very best characters imo!) reverted back to her worst self, but given that she lost Dewey---the one person who brought out her softer, better nature---it makes perfect sense to me.
I missed Dewey more than Sidney in Scream 6. Sid is great, we all adore her, but in some ways it feels to me like her story has already been told and her arc is complete.
Ethan is SO my type---adorkable, shy, endearingly self-deprecating. Too bad about the whole psycho serial killer thing (hey, everyone has their flaws!), but, um, maybe he can be redeemed....?!
I've given up attempting to rank the Scream films because I love them all, but Scream 6 is definitely high up there on my list of favorites. And every time I watch, I notice new easter eggs...with the help of youtubers who are far more observant than I am :)

3 Years, 3 Months, 6 Days and I finally got a speck of justice... hopefully.
For those of you who followed me throughout the years, on May 31, 2020, I was attacked by the NYPD unjustly for covering the George Floyd Protests. I was held in a holding cell along with other protesters and later released literally an hour before the crack of dawn, without being charged with a crime.
A brand-new electric bike destroyed by the FDNY (no fault of their own). My phone busted, along with any evidence. My chest is forever scarred. The memories of the NYPD forever in my mind, altering my already views on policing in general to the point of abolishing the current police system.
What followed years after was me in a case vs. the NYPD and NYC. Along with other victims of NYPD's brutal tactics, we stood firm in holding the NYPD accountable.
I decided to become one of the public faces of this case, by doing interviews (under my real name of course), recalling details while trying to hold back tears mixed with anger.
I spent years reading comments about how I was "a paid actor by the Democratic Party", a "plant" by Black Lives Matter, a "crisis actor" and an opportunist when the only opportunity I wanted was to cover the protest from the protesters side, sell my work to the media and go home and have a quiet birthday.
I have to fund raised and get strangers to help me put my mental state back together in a quick manner so that I will be able to be of sound mind as I speak up for people.
Well, I'm happy to say that something came out of it.
My quote, if you don't want to read the article states:
Matthew King-Yarde, a protester involved in the suits, said all New Yorkers should support the agreement — whatever their political leanings.
“Regardless of your stance, none of us should have faced trauma, both physical and mental, for voicing concerns about law enforcement’s disregard for Black lives,”
King-Yarde said.
“The NYPD must undertake extensive work beyond what’s been done. Are they up for the challenge? One can only hope.”
(The reporter didn't do any research, just grabbed quotes from the lawyers website)
Sadly, one of the things I can't do is go into the exact details of how I feel about the settlement. I do have some strong opinions about it, but that's the problem with settlements. You can't really express them the way you want to.
However, I will in the near future talk about the impact of the settlement.
But at the very least... the very least... I can start to move on from this long and tiring court case.

Donald Trump has a gag order placed on him by the judge in his Stormy Daniels hush money trial. So to get around the gag order various Trump lickspittles make pilgrimages to the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse to say stuff to the media which Trump himself is not allowed to say. Past Trump mouthpieces have included pseudo-hillbilly fascist Sen. J.D. Vance and House Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson.
Monday's Trump mouthpieces were a quintet of MAGA C-listers: Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA-09), ex-NYC police commissioner Bernie Kerik, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Trump campaign aide Jason Miller (not related to Stephen Miller), and Kash Patel - a onetime deputy director of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
While Trump has been beseeching his followers to show up outside the courthouse to demonstrate support for their Dear Leader, on Monday it was pro-democracy Trump opponents who were there in greater numbers.
A cadre of MAGA loyalists who had gathered to show their support for Donald Trump during his hush-money trial was shouted down by a bevy of cowbell-clanging anti-Trump protesters on Monday when they tried to speak outside of a lower Manhattan courthouse. [ ... ] The group that flanked the twice-impeached ex-president this time around included South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, former New York police commissioner Bernie Kerik, ex-Trump administration official Kash Patel, Trump senior advisor Jason Miller, and Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA). All but Patel, meanwhile, were customarily decked out in Trump’s standard red tie and navy suit combo.
Yep, four of the five designated Trump lickspittles were dressed in Trump uniforms. Did he dress them himself over at Trump Tower?
Alan Wilson got an earful when he tried to spew the Trump line.
With boos raining down on Wilson, one demonstrator could be heard shouting “go home you carpetbagging fools.” Another protester who camped out behind the pro-Trump speakers with a large “Bootlickers” sign relentlessly blew a whistle while ringing a cowbell. According to independent reporter Jacqueline Sweet, the man was given a citation by law enforcement for “too much cowbell.” Patel, who is expected to take a senior White House role if Trump returns to power, portrayed the ex-president as a victim of an “unconstitutional weaponization of justice.” It was difficult to hear what he had to say as the crowd chanted: “Kash Patel, Go To Hell!” Kerik was also subjected to targeted insults when he spoke, with protesters calling him a “bald-headed bigot” throughout his comments. According to New York Magazine correspondent Oliva Nuzzi, the Trump-hating crowd also took aim at the speakers for dressing just like the former president, prompting them to call the MAGA group “red tie terrorists.” She added that the demonstrators even got a laugh from Miller, who chuckled when one protester wondered if they had bought their suits at “Dictators R Us.”
To use a favorite Trump word, Monday's Trump mouthpieces were real losers.
Rep. Andrew Clyde's rise to fame in Georgia was as a prominent gun store owner. One wonders how many of his guns make it up to NYC to be used illegally.
Bernie Kerik is a convicted felon for tax fraud who was later pardoned by Trump. He served several years behind bars for his crimes.
Alan Wilson has made false election fraud claims even before the Trump presidency and is a serial litigator for far right causes.
Kash Patel once served as an aide to Devin Nunes – the former House member who unsuccessfully sued a cartoon cow.
Jason Miller admitted to hiring prostitutes and having extramarital affairs with two campaign staffers. Republican family values – just like Trump.
Meidas Touch has a video report on Monday's scene outside the courthouse. (never mind the plant commercial in the middle).
youtube
If you're anywhere near NYC, visit the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse area on a day that the hush money trial is in session. There's a lunch break starting roughly at 11:30 AM and court is recessed for the day in the afternoon before the building closes at 5:00 PM. Bring your own cow bell and sign.
Court is in session this week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Next Monday court is closed for Memorial Day but should be in session on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The case may go to the jury sometime late next week.
The Manhattan courthouse is at 100 Centre Street; take the 4, 5, or 6 subway trains to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station and walk about four blocks north. The crowds and the Trump bootlickers seem to be directly across the street from the courthouse at Collect Pond Park.
EDIT: If Trump toadies had a bad day outside the courtroom, the one and only defense witness for Trump seems to have had an even worse one in court.

Do you know which group is the least likely to be involved in violent crime in the US? Migrants. Yet that's who y'all focus on. It's almost as if you don't actually care about the violent crime or the victims you just carr about pushing an agenda even when facts don't back you up.
Illegal immigration itself is a crime, honey. Every illegal is a criminal. You add "violent" in front of "crime" as if that negates the fact that these people are criminals, all while ignoring the fact that an "undocumented" class is not going to accurately show up in official statistics, especially when a lot of cases involving illegals aren't brought to trial. They're caught and released and reoffend multiple times before they get convicted of anything, if they ever do. Everywhere there's a mass influx of illegals crime rises, poverty rises, property values plummet, and neighborhoods are destroyed. I saw it happen in real time in the late 90s and 2000s, and it's still happening today. Just look at NYC.
But you know what? Let's actually go solely based off stats, if you want. Now, which demographic disproportionally commits the most violent crime in the US? What would you suggest we do about those people, since by your logic they're the most imminent threat based on the stats?

I just realize that why loki so calm and sofe and nice to Sylvie even Sylvie keep throwing tantrums to him. It's simple it's because loki is more mature one and well more mature one is definitely will always calm and make the brat keep winning. So Sylvie is the brat, that really need getting slap , and look likely kindness will not melt her
And the showrunner say Sylvie is older than loki. Well she older but she not mature and please don't using 'raising in apocalypse ' be reason why she is a brat
This is why I wish that Sylvie wasn't a creator's pet. This is why I wish Loki was allowed a victory and a complement that wasn't actually being directed at Sylvie. This is why I wish there was no romance.
Because there's plenty of character that doesn't does make sense and could be use to make a interesting character. Of course selfish little brat who would be emotionally stunted. She only had herself to relay on and even having companionship would have been risk and expense to her. In turn it makes sense Loki just takes it, his life was one where he had to look out for Thor, who was reckless and egotistical. Loki use to taking care of people.
But while all that makes sense in the story the framing is still obsessed with putting down Loki and praising Sylvie. Even when surrounded by time Nazis that committed daily universe genocide it's still Loki called a villain for the NYC invasion and also stuff they just made up for the show. While Sylvie flaws aren't really treated as flaws she eeds to work on. She treated like the victim.
They want Sylvie to be more real and relatable because she had to rough it and Loki's prince. But the truth is Loki's life is going to be more relatable to more people because he is the one with family and relationships that resemble what someone might have in real life.

Berserk's Continued Popularity and Trauma
Tumblr media
I often keep up with what's selling in the manga world, so it's not a surprise that I check out ICv2's Manga Week when the site posts up interviews and insights about the industry. What caught my eye this time was Kentaro Miura's Berserk still being a top-seller and a top manga franchise in the English-speaking side of the world.
How popular is Berserk right now? It was the top manga franchise of Fall 2023 beating out everything that was either Shonen Jump, Junji Ito or Attack on Titan. The Deluxe Editions have sold well for all of 2023, especially the first edition (which contains Volumes 1-3 of the series). It helps that Dark Horse Comics, the North American publisher for the manga, has been promoting the Berserk Deluxe Editions non-stop. Even when they didn't announce anything new at Anime NYC last year, Dark Horse made a huge note about the latest Berserk Deluxe Edition that would come out.
I think it's great that Berserk is getting a lot more attention (especially after Kentaro Miura died) because this is a story about trauma and how we still carry the wounds of it at times.
In my opinion, Berserk is a story about people trying to overcome their own trauma - one caused by interpersonal relations. Ultimately, it's about three people in particular. Guts, the main hero who falls into despair after his experiences in the Golden Age Arc and has to deal with the curse of constantly being hunted by monsters beyond his imagination. Griffith, the antagonist who once had admirable dreams, but fully gives into darkness after going through painful torture and is the main source of Guts' trauma. And Casca, the strong heroine who becomes a victim of Griffith's desires and mentally shattered as a result until recent events in the manga. The connection between all three characters says it all - sometimes, the trauma caused is not from strangers who are "dangerous," but those closest and dearest to us.
Berserk is so relatable because we carry on the weight of whatever personal trauma we experienced without realizing its hold on us until it becomes apparent. The worse thing is we often have a very hard time talking about it.
Around 2021, I heard about a certain book about trauma that took during the COVID pandemic. It was Bessel van der Kolk's The Body Keeps the Score. Originally published in 2014, the book blew up for good reason because COVID forced everyone to confront issues kept hidden for a long time. Van der Kolk talks about how horrible people can be to one another and that psychiatry seems to ignore the complexity of trauma when it comes to helping its victims.
Because of the nuance and how long it takes to heal, maybe that's why we can't talk about trauma easily.
Which is why I want to get to this point - I sometimes find it hard to talk about Berserk because of the sexual violence and horror aspects. Yes, fans love to call it the GOAT and/or recommending the manga to other manga/Western comics fans. But I will say I can't exactly recommend Berserk to anyone who's experienced trauma, especially sexual trauma. If they haven't come to terms and/or processed their pain, why would any manga fan shove Berserk in their face? I know there's heavy debate about microagressions and triggers, but just because it's critically-acclaimed doesn't mean it's for everyone.
I will say that the sexual violence in Berserk is used in a way to highlight the brutality of the real world at times. It serves its purpose in the story. Maybe I feel that Berserk is about acknowledging the dark side of life. The world is full of absolute cruelty. And maybe more importantly, you never fully move on. That's the key point. Moments that hurt will stick by you for a long time. People love to shame others for not being able to move on and/or cheer up. They don't know how trauma forces its victims to stay still out of a realistic yet unhelpful fear of certain kinds of people.
But you can still move forward. I'm admired by Guts fighting in the face of despair. He embodies the belief that you probably can never move on from whatever emotional pain you experience and that's okay. At least take the steps to make your own life worth living. It's the best you can do for yourself.
And a good start to moving forward is accepting the bad thoughts. I recently read how positive thinking is pushed so hard to promote better mental health. Some positivity is fine, but there's so much pain in this world that all the wellness industry strategies in the world will never make go away. It is a huge problem when we're told to grit and grind while suppressing our inner-most vulnerabilities.
A lot of people can't handle that kind of vulnerability. Maybe that's why I'm happy that Berserk is being discovered by new fans. Guts is a strong yet so very vulnerable hero. I think it's those vulnerabilities due to his trauma that allow him to gain some very good friends (Puck, Farnese, Serpico, Isidro, and Schierke) along the way who genuinely care about him.
We all want someone to acknowledge our pain and be willing to sit with and stick by us through the neck of it all.
I remember a friend who once told me that when they went to see someone perform, all of their grief and vulnerability was so apparent that they wished that they didn't need to air it out since a lot of people can't handle it. I told them I can handle it and they said that I was built different.
Much like the popularity of Berserk these days and what I hope the series encourages, I want my difference of being able to sit with trauma to be the norm.

For someone who was/is a proclaimed "fan girl" R really do be losing her cool easily when it came to her and being shipped with a co-star. You know I totally respect when actors set boundaries if there's harassment involved or people getting weird with speculations, creating rumors etc. She has the right to be uncomfortable with being shipped with someone she considers a platonic friend but the way she approaches this whole thing is weird to say the least
Hates to being romantically linked to T but can't stop sharing pictures of him, obsessing over what shippers do and say in their own spaces and trying so hard to "prove them wrong" 💀like girl it's not that serious, if nothing romantic comes out of zeglyth we'll move on (like people did with Jalle)
Her main problem relies in that she's ON SOCIAL MEDIA almost 24/7 and is obsessed with finding out what people are saying about her. My problem with her is she don't act like a real professional actor, she moves like a social media personality, it might be the Youtuber in her but if her plans are to expand her acting/singing career she needs to take herself more seriously and log out at least from Twitter. Get yourself to networking events like Zendaya did in her time, write an album, get in audition rooms because she's literally the only actor from TBOSAS main cast who has not booked a single role since the movie came out. Like girl, it was the perfect time to build a substantial fan base that's going to support your future projects, it was her time to use her amazing talent to do so much productive and creative shit. Like it upsets me how much time she wastes sitting around at her house having online meltdowns one day after the other over unimportant stuff like shipping 💀
Also it's not lost on me why she despises zeglyth shipping so much, and its because she realizes T is better than her man, she reads the comments and knows what people think of J or I better say how little they think of J as an actor/person. R has an obsession to prove her boyfriend is just as good as T, that's why as soon as she posts Zeglyth she goes back to like Sejanus/Zegvera/J posts lol lt's like clockwork. I understand she's J victim and why she's so defensive of her groomer but there's nothing she can do to make us like her boyfriend because:
1)He's ugly
2) He has the personality of a cardboard
3) We caught on his predatory behavior so yuck /:
4) He's an okay actor but he hasn't proved himself besides being someone who gets his career propelled by his more famous and talented gf, his castings so far are giving charity case 🤷🏼‍♀️
I always support R because I see so much raw talent in her, but her online persona is so annoying. I'll give her she's 22 but her excuses to behave like on the internet are running out. Girl needs to learn to back off a little and ignore shit she don't like. Choose your battles wisely R, instead of running your mouth and embarrassing yourself over dumb and petty fan wars... you should be above that at this point in your career. You're a Hollywood actress not a stan account on Twitter! Act like it pls 🙏🏼
She’s a fan girl herself so she needs to stop acting superior to any of us. She’s always in celeb comments acting like a fan, not a peer.
You’re absolutely right. I don’t care if an actor sets boundaries because I can respect it and back off. But I don’t like it when people set boundaries and cross those boundaries themselves.
People are already starting to move on Zeglyth because of her behavior. It’s tiring. Jalle went nowhere because Halle stop talking about Jonah and moved on from TLM. If R wants us to move on then she needs to stop the Zeglyth pics and liking stuff about T. But that’s issue, isn’t it? She doesn’t want us to stop talking about them.
She needs to put that phone down and get into the audition room. Worried about shipping when she has NYC bills to pay 💀 Rent and the phone bill is due, mama. Time to get to work!
She’s delusional about J. We will never like him. We don’t care about Sejanus. We all know he doesn’t have T’s talent. J needs to go to Broadway or sitcom / medical drama shows. He’s not fit to be a movie star.
R is picking the wrong battles here. I’m a fan at the end of the day, not her enemy. She doesn’t want to be an enemy of her loyal fanbase. She’s losing us already. I’m the one who buys tickets to her projects. I’m going to see Y2K and SW because of her! Stop paying with your hard working fans, R! I don’t need to spend my time, energy and money on you.
But again, she’s about to be 23 and I’m hoping this is just phase and she snaps out of it.

Trapped together (Part 1)
I haven’t written anything in over a year, but apparently this is the time of year I get inspired! However, one of my 2023 goals is to finally write out some of the ideas I’ve had for a while. I will continue to post very sporadically, but please let me know if you would like to be tagged when I do (I believe @plaidbooks asked to be tagged on a past post).
This fic fills the Blizzard square for StoriesofSvu’s 2022 Holiday Bingo @storiesofsvu . It’s my first 2-part fic, and I hope to have the finale uploaded in 1-2 days.
Pairing: Mike Dodds x Reader
Trigger warnings for a brief mention of serial killer in the “set-up” to the story (skip the 1st paragraph if you’d like to avoid it!)
************
It had been a busy two weeks of intense investigation by the Manhattan SVU squad on the hunt of what your team now believed to be a prolific serial killer who traced victims new to the city back to their rural hometowns to attack someone in their families. Today, you and Sergeant Dodds had needed to travel through a West Virginia mountain pass following a lead based on a victim who had run away from her small West Virginia community. Her cousin had suffered a mysterious hunting accident only 5 days after her death in the city.
However, when leaving the small county morgue, the local Sheriff informed you and Sergeant Dodds of an impending blizzard and that the mountain pass was unsafe to travel through and would only get worse throughout the night. You both tried to explain you were used to driving in New York winters, but he convinced you both that it wasn’t worth the risk. Instead, the Sheriff directed you to the only motel in a two hour radius where you and Dodds would have to wait out the storm until the roads cleared enough to return to NYC.
It was a small, desolate, dingy highway motel that looked like it usually saw its own clientele of shady individuals. The owner directed you and the Sarg to the only room left that held one queen-sized bed. Everyone who had been traveling through the area had descended upon the hotel in an effort to ride out the storm, and the owner told you both how lucky you were to arrive in time to get the last room.
You and Dodds shared a look. It was one of discomfort and hesitation. There may have also been some mortification on your part with some added on bubble-guts related to your secret penchant for reading “there was only one bed” romance books. There was no way that situation was actually happening to you in your actual real life. With Mike Dodds. The most beautiful man you had ever seen. Also the nicest.
“Are you absolutely certain there are no other rooms?” asked Dodds. The motel owner again confirmed that there was the one queen bed which we could take or leave. “What about any roll-away cots?”
The hotel owner let out the phlegmatic laugh of a 30-pack year smoker. “Where do you think you are, son? This ain’t no fancy place, which is clearer than day to anyone who ain’t blind. Ain’t you some detective? Sheriff Lonnie called ahead and near ordered me to hold the room for you two.”
You stepped in before your sergeant risked offending the only person standing between an unlucky situation and a worse situation. “Then could we at least get some extra towels and blankets, please? As many extra blankets as you have,” you asserted, with your hand on your gun hip to get the point across. You didn’t trust the ancient-looking powerlines outside to be capable of keeping even the small hotel warm and lit. The owner came back a few minutes later, shoved a stack of towels and blankets into your arms, and shut the door behind him.
You turned around and found Dodds with his hand on his head, clearly thinking hard about something. You watched him for a moment before he noticed you watching. Then, with resolution, he grabbed a blanket from the pile and grabbed a pillow off the bed and headed towards the door.
“What are you doing, Sergeant?”
“I’m going to sleep in the car tonight.”
“Are you insane?” you spluttered.
“I’ve slept in worse places than a car.”
“During an Appalachian mountain blizzard? Do you have any idea how cold it’s about to get outside? People die in these kind of conditions, Sergeant.”
“I’ll keep the engine running.”
“The gas won’t last that long and I doubt the car battery will be able to make it through the storm, either, without dying or the engine line freezing.” You knew nothing about cars, but that sounded right.
He leaned with his head against the door and mumbled something you couldn’t understand.
“Pardon?”
With a big sigh he turned around, “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
“I’m not uncomfortable.” This was all uncomfortable, of course you were uncomfortable. “Are you uncomfortable, Sergeant?”
He hesitated, “a little.”
“Would you be uncomfortable if it was Carisi here with you instead?”
He barked out a laugh and ran his hand through his hair. “I would be, although I’m not sure if I’d be more or less so.”
“I personally think I’d be more uncomfortable with Carisi. He strikes me as the type of sleepover guest who keeps everyone else up all night talking then drools all over your mom’s guest pillows.” You both laughed uncomfortably before you continued, “We’ve had too long of a day for worrying about making one another uncomfortable after an already long week trying to find our perp and getting an idea of the extent of how many victims he even has. I’m tired and we’re both grown. We’ve worked together long enough that we can sleep in the same room without it being weird, can’t we?”
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I didn’t want to make things even more uncomfortable. I just want you to know I respect you and your comfort.” Your heart did a weird somersault before he continued, “and your role as one of my detectives.” Oh. Right. You were going to have to remind yourself to be professional. It’s not like you had the biggest crush of your life on your own Sergeant. That would be career suicide and a recipe for an embarrassing situation that you didn’t have the social grace to handle.
“Of course I know that, that would never be in question, Sir.” There. See? Super professional. Professional was your middle name. “Now, I’m going to try to shower the morgue germs off.”
You carried all of the towels into the bathroom with you. You closed the door behind you and made a face in the mirror after catching a whiff of the moldy air. This was the grossest motel you had ever been in. It had probably been built in the 60s and seemed to have the original brown and mustard carpet, curtains, bedding, possibly even the same towels. You weren’t sure if you wanted to inspect the bed to rule-out bedbugs or if you were afraid to look. It’s not like you could do anything about it.
With a sigh you started shrugging out of your suit. When you were stripped down to your undies, you made a decision. You filled the sink with soapy water and scrubbed your undergarments. Then you took the time to stand with the mini hairdryer attached to the wall to dry them off. You could put up with a lot of things, roach motel included, but you weren’t going to sleep in anything less than fresh drawers. Then you took a quick hot shower and scrubbed yourself dry with a scratchy towel before staring at yourself in the mirror and thinking about the sleeping arrangements.
You really didn’t want to sleep in your suit pants after traipsing through the rural crime scene and a morgue, but you also didn’t want to make your already uncomfortable boss more uncomfortable. You were very grateful that you threw on a t-shirt under your blouse that morning. Still, it barely reached the top of your thighs and your lacey underwear were quite visible. You left the t-shirt on, wrapped a towel around your waist for the walk to the bed, and stepped outside of the now-steamy bathroom and walked, with pretend confidence, towards the bed.
With your head held high and eyes aimed on your destination you strode further into the room…and tripped right over your sergeant who was laying on the floor. You caught yourself after falling on your knees and looked behind you with a look of exasperation.
“WHAT are you doing?” you yelled at the same time apologies were spilling out of his mouth and he was trying to help you up. At some point the towel had fallen off from around your waist so you jumped up the distance between the floor and the bed and quickly pulled the covers over you.
“I’m so sorry, I was trying to find the cleanest part of the carpet to sleep on. I assumed you would see me?”
“No I didn’t see you Sergeant, why would I expect to see you on the floor? Why are you on that disgusting floor? Do you know what kind of things get trapped in a 60 year old rundown motel carpet? Please get up!”
“I thought it would be better if I slept on the floor. I told you I’ve slept in worse places,” he smiled sheepishly and made no move to get up from the floor.
“Sergeant, am I more repugnant than that filthy floor?”
His eyes grew wide as saucers, “Y/N, no!! Of course not! How could you think that?”
“I think that because you continue to sit on the floor.”
He stood up and looked lost. “I….where am I supposed to sleep if not in the car and not on the floor?”
You stared in confusion at his confusion. “Sergeant, in the bed. Next to me. Surely that’s better than a car in a blizzard or a motel room floor?” He turned red from his neck to the tips of his ears. He seemed at a loss for words.
“If it would make you more comfortable, we can pile a bunch of these extra pillows and towels in between our sleeping bodies. You know, so that I do not mistakenly accost you in the night.”
“I never! I never thought…” he stammered.
“Of course not. I’m teasing you, mostly, but I certainly don’t expect you to sleep on the floor and considering where we are I would prefer you did not.” You piled up two extra blankets lengthwise in the middle of the bed. When he remained standing where he was, you shrugged, laid down, and turned over on your side. You really were tired and this was a mentally exhausting case. You didn’t have the energy to spend anymore time coaxing your sergeant into a somewhat comfortable sleeping arrangement nor to convince him that you could both behave like adults. You heard him shuffle into the bathroom and you heard the water start. You pulled the blankets tighter around you. The wind howled outside and despite the old heating system being turned up to its highest number, the room felt very cold. You pulled your knees up to your chest hoping to conserve heat.
You must have been close to dozing off because what felt like only a few minutes later you felt the far side of the bed dip and heard the lamp click off. The bed moved a little as Dodds tried to get comfortable. You weren’t sure if you should say goodnight or continue looking like you were asleep, so you decided to stay as you were. Part of your decision came from the fact that you were so cold, you couldn’t bare the thought of uncoiling from your fetal position. As you started feeling heavier with sleep, you wondered if you had been shivering because you felt another blanket being placed over you. A hand very lightly squeezed your shoulder as you heard a whispered “Goodnight, Detective” before falling fully into sleep.
