So this is a piece of good news that I have a small stake in. The Oregon silverspot butterfly (Speryeria zerene hippolyta) once flew along the coast from San Mateo County in California to my stomping grounds up here on the Long Beach Peninsula in extreme southwest Washington. As with many herbivorous insects, the caterpillar of this species has a very limited diet--in fact, the only thing it can eat is the leaves of the early blue violet (Viola adunca). The violets grow in coastal meadows where they get plenty of sun; unfortunately, due to fire suppression and development, most of these meadows are either heavily damaged or no longer exist. And no violets means no butterflies.

Today, the last wild populations include four sites in Oregon and one in Northern California. Over the past few decades conservationists have been working to protect and restore coastal meadows, and both the Oregon Zoo in Portland and the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle have active breeding programs for Oregon silverspots. The caterpillars are raised in captivity, and then when they pupate they are placed in suitable release sites. Some of these are in established populations, but they have also more recently been reintroduced to parts of their historic range where they had been extirpated, such as Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Saddle Mountain in Oregon.

This latest release is the largest at Saddle Mountain, with over 2000 silverspot pupae being released there. It's also the site closest to where I am--maybe fifty miles away as the butterfly soars--and people here have been preparing for years for either a planned release or the natural dispersal of butterflies. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge has been engaged in multiple habitat restoration projects over the years, and this includes a restored meadow with a large patch of early blue violets. The farm owned by my friends that I live on also has extensive early blue violet plantings, and there's also a commercial native plant nursery on site that includes the violets as part of their seasonal offerings.

It is my hope that within my lifetime I will get to see the Oregon silverspot flying here on the peninsula. The latest Saddle Mountain release makes it that much more likely that my hope will become reality.

And so spring has come to my country. It's warm at last and full of fresh green. Trees and shrubs are blooming. Pink and white blossom visited by bees and butterflies are so eye-catching that I feel tempted to take a lot of photos. And after many days of cold and rain it's very refreshing to take a walk in the sunshine, breathing in the delicate scent of white blossom.

Hi, I saw your post about the Uranus Jupiter alignment on Saturday, and I am in dire need of a change. How can we best utilize it? What should we do to honor it?

This is a difficult question to answer without more information about what (if any) type of magic you do and are familiar with.

I'm going to give you a very simple practice here that involves some energy work and the natural properties of plants that are in bloom for me right now. Feel free to reach back out and let me know more about your practice and maybe I can get more specific.

You will need a jar with a lid that holds 16 oz of water, a pen and writing utensil, two cups, a cup of fresh violets or 10 butterfly pea flowers, and lemon juice. (suggested: a small food offering for Jupiter and Saturn, a part of dinner is fine)

This is some pretty basic sympathetic magic: we are going to use the color-changing properties of the flowers plus the energy of this planetary event to bring change into your own life.

Set the jar of water outside to soak up the energy of the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction. You can put it into sunlight or into moonlight the night beforehand depending on which you think is more powerful - ask the water to absorb this energy. Let it sit outside for at least 2 hours to overnight. (Bonus points if you do it during the exactitude of this change, check your local ephemeris for this time)

Boil the water and then cool it down for 2 minutes before steeping your flower tea. Let this tea sit for 10-15 minutes until it takes on a pretty purple color. Separate the tea into two cups. You want to enforce the sympathetic link of the two cups - they are of the same water and tea, they are the same. You can do energy work here to make the two cups the same if that is a part of your practice.

Write a list, a letter to Jupiter and Uranus, or put into words in some other way what needs to change in your life. Get very specific. You can use sigils or whatever is meaningful to you. If it's a part of your practice, fold up the paper away from you to show that this is what you want to get rid of. Put this piece of paper into one of the cups of tea.

Pour a splash of lemon juice (really to taste here) into each cup - it will change the purple color to a bright fuschia. This is your change in action! Drink out of the cup that does not have the paper in it and leave the other cup on your altar overnight before disposing of the paper in the trash and the liquid down your toilet.

The next time that you pee, focus on what you need gone leaving your body.

Take steps in your life to carry this change forward.
