Apart from that, it's mostly so much yearning and pining and Wangxian falling in love in a marriage of convenience and gender euphoria and I love that for them. For a while, I kept periodically thinking about F/M Wangxian (Male Wei Wuxian and Female Lan Wangji) without being able to figure out why I kept being distracted by F/M Wangxian. I mean, I think different genderbending AU situations are fun to think about in fanfiction, especially in worlds where gender roles are a problem. M/M, F/M, M/F, and F/F Wangxian all change the story slightly and I think it's neat to explore why and how.

And obviously, F!LWJ would be a total babe, that's nice to think about, but why still M!WWX and not F!WWX? F!WWX would also be a total babe, though of a different type, especially as the Yiling Patriarch. But my brain kept insisting that M!WWX was still crucial somehow and I couldn't figure out why that setup.

I mean, it is funny to think about how M!WWX's unchanged flirty behavior in their teenage years would suddenly set off every single alarm bell in the Cloud Recesses due to people being able to SEE IT thanks to heteronormativity goggles. WWX with a degree of societal permission to be romantically interested in Lan Wangji? Intolerable levels of annoying. Unbearable to witness. Singing love songs under her balcony type bullshit like he wants her to start another fight under the moonlight. He's writing her poetry (clever "joke" poems bordering on innuendo and actual romantic poems) and has the gall to be good at it. Lan Qiren is barely resisting the urge to beat WWX off with a broomstick. Lan Xichen doesn't know whether to be horrified or delighted (LWJ is bluuuuushing).

I do also like the idea of WWX coming back from the dead and finding out that the common people have decided in the past decade (thanks to the heteronormativity goggles) that the noble female cultivator LWJ had a Tragic Romance with the Evil Yiling Patriarch. Poor woman! WWX: "Who had a what now?" (I do also like the idea of Wangxian actually having a Tragic Romance during and after the war. And mutually stated romantic interest and affection still didn't fix anything for them. But it's funny to think about WWX getting completely blindsided by this EPIC LOVE STORY if there was no actual relationship.)

(Sizhui is still adopted here! Noble and pure-hearted LWJ adopted a war orphan because she longed to be a mother but swore never to love again after the Yiling Patriarch broke her heart, obviously! WWX, listening to this gossip: "She what? I mean, Lan Zhan would make an amazing mom, good for her, lucky kid, and no one is good enough for her if she doesn't want to get married, but seriously, I cannot stress this enough, what the fuck. She didn't like me back! Aiyah, I bet she's still so mad at me for ruining her reputation like this.")

Eventually, I realized that the key piece of this AU that I was missing was that I wanted to write F/M Wangxian that turned into F/F Wangxian. Because I think Transfem Wei Wuxian would display (and I mean this affectionately) the most ridiculous trans egg behavior imaginable, especially because it would lean more towards one of those "I was mostly fine living as a guy, but I'm so much happier as a girl" situations. Absurd amounts of queer foreshadowing.

So, Wei Wuxian gets resurrected into a female MXY's body or something and obliviously goes, "Oh! This is nice! I've always wanted to try being a woman! Yes, I can roll with this." And eventually Wei Wuxian has to actually examine the fact that she really likes being a woman and doesn't want to "go back" to being a man in any way, but not before putting Lan Wangji through an incredible amount of new "joke" flirtation. And people who knew WWX before are like... "Hmm. Some things are making sense now."

Things like: 1) As a teenager, WWX insisted that LWJ was such a strong woman that, if they got married, LWJ could be "the husband" and "he" would happily be "the wife". There were lots and lots of "I want to live as Jiejie's spoiled wife" jokes. Consequently, at the Cloud Recesses, at least one outrageously inappropriate joke was made by WWX about LWJ knocking "him" up, because WWX's breeding kink is still very much a thing. WWX didn't know about her breeding kink when she made that joke; both she and LWJ learned something about themselves that day.

2) Wei Wuxian would frequently pull crossdressing-related pranks saying: "Wow, this is crazy. I can't believe you guys are forcing me to put on a dress and all this makeup for this prank! You guys are wild!" And Jiang Cheng would reply: "No one is forcing you to do this. No one dared you. You suddenly volunteered to crossdress for a prank that does not require crossdressing AGAIN. Also, give me that brush, I'll do your makeup because you suck ass at it."

3) WWX would frequently go on rants about how women are so much more beautiful than men, which flew under the radar as a "normal behavior for a lustful young man", but there was always something a little off about it. Like, WWX might say that women are so beautiful and perfect that everyone would choose to be one if allowed to pick before being born just to admire the gorgeous view, and JC might say, "I don't think that's quite right...?" But WWX would just say something like (like an obnoxious teenage sibling), "That's because you know that you'd make an ugly woman!" or, "Are you saying that women aren't perfect? Also, are you saying Shijie isn't the best person in the world?" And JC would have to be like, "I didn't say that! And I'd make a beautiful woman, fuck you! Also, how is that relevant to your point?"

By the end of this AU, there is at least one public love confession that is horribly embarrassing for everyone else to witness, in which Wei Wuxian has finally realized that LWJ used to be in love with "him" and that she loves LWJ back, but tearfully apologizes because she can't be the handsome man that LWJ loved anymore. Even if she could be a man again, she still doesn't want to stop being a woman, even if she's not very good at it yet. She can't perform the required husbandly duties like provide a good home for LWJ! She can't father LWJ's children anymore!

(Jiang Cheng: "Do you have to do this now?! Stop being indecent! There are children here. Also, we're all being held hostage.")

But it's all cool! Because shortly after realizing WWX was back and determined to live as a woman, LWJ speedran a sexuality crisis, flipped a mental switch, and essentially went, "I'm a lesbian now." (Or maybe LWJ was really confused about being attracted to WWX when they first met, because LWJ had only been physically attracted to her fellow female disciples up until then, so WWX seemed like the "exception", until WWX comes back from the dead as a woman and then it's like, "Ah. Not an exception after all.")

Hi! I just read your fics and I love them! In the Qin Su!WWX au I believe you mentioned in a few places that WWX can no longer use cold springs bc it would be harmful (ig?) for hin in Qin Su's body?? I feel like I'm missing some lore here... How would it be bad for him? Is it like a gender thing or a cultivation type thing? And how do cultivation types differ based on gender/sex of a person?

In canon, women don't use the cold spring, so I ran with the idea that meditating in cold water is healthful for male cultivators (with excess yang energy), while meditating in hot water is healthful for female cultivators (with excess yin energy).

It's not harmful to go to the opposite gender's bathing area, but doing it too often might hamper one's cultivation. For trans and nonbinary disciples, they choose a bathing area depending on whether they've completed a cultivation-based physical transition. Wei Wuxian doesn't experience gender dysphoria in Qin Su's body, so he either a) goes to Lan Xichen's hot spring, which was originally built for Lan Yi or b) visits the women's hot spring/steaming rooms at a specific time designated for trans/nb folks.

TBH I considered posting this fic here but I truly can’t be bothered to figure out how to put all the links and everything so I’ll just post the whole fic once it’s finished on AO3. In the meantime, I have literally So Much to say about this fic because it’s been rotting my brain for weeks now, and there’s only so much I can fit in the author’s notes, so here we are!

Act three:

Yaahhh, I hope Jiang Yanli manipulating resentful energy came as a surprise to people! I just found it very fitting that she ends up following in her Wei Wuxian's footsteps since she is changing little Wei Ying's future so much. Also, I feel like all of the female characters in MDZS have sooo much (very valid) resentment in them, and I think they deserve some catharsis. Of all of them, I think Qin Su has the most valid rage and resentment. That poor lady...

I also felt it very real and canon for there to be non-martial cultivation (excluding musical cultivation) that men just... don't even consider. Food seems like such a natural form of cultivation because it's literally providing energy; each dish also undergoes a transformation, and a lot of cooking is somewhat meditative. If there can be fan cultivation and music cultivation, then it really only makes sense there be cooking cultivation. Jindan/golden core is based off of taoist alchemy, which is kind of cooking? So there.

Cai Yiben one-upping Lan Wangji by showing Jiang Yanli how hot it is that she created a whole new type of cultivation. Good for them.

We don't get any information about Wen Qing's parents in novel canon, and in CQL they're killed by Wen Ruohan, so I went in a different direction. I didn't want Wen Muhuo to be the one trying to kill Cai Yiben, but I also didn't want the stakes to be super high with Wen Ruohan or someone else either. So I went with a petty gentry Lady squabble instead. IDK, maybe it's unrealistic. Who cares! I just needed something to push the plot along, because if not Cai Yiben and Wei Huili would have just circled around each other for decades. Sigh...

Will Cai Yiben and Jiang Yanli run away and live a cottagecore life far away from the sects or stay in Qishan? Let me know!

I Don’t Like: HIGH SCHOOL AUS. Inscet. Permanent character death. Infidelity. OOC behavior can really bug me if it’s in a “this character is a nerd! why are you making him smooth! who is this???” situation. Let the dorks be dorks pls. Degrading talk/name-calling during sex. Piss kink. The egg laying kink thing that’s been gaining traction recently. I don’t know if it has a proper name, but every time I gave it a chance all I could think was “this seems like an unsustainable asexual reproduction. What are the biological implications of a species that does that?”  Age-play. 

Scum Villain Self Saving System: I’m here for the messy nature of this. This is where some peak weirdo4weirdo freak4freak stuff happens and it’s delightfully chaotic. Any combination of Shen Yuan, Luo Binghe, Mobei-Jun, Shang Qinghua is fun. I love the canon dynamics and I’m feel like there’s some real potential for fun rarepair shipping in there (gen fic is good too!). The dichotomy between being competent at their jobs and so incompetent/pathetic in their love lives is top tier (I’m obsessed with way Luo Binghe can scheme and be clever by faking tears and being a brat). Identity reveal AUs are great. I love things that make me laugh or go “oh shit these people have some Problems that years of therapy might not fix.”  

I also love Shen Jiu, but more in a gen fic way then any particular ship. Pls no fluff with Yue Qingyuan. That is an angst only pairing or a slow burn so slow that no one would want to podfic it for ITPE. Rarepairs with him are fine to be fluffy though. The man is just a complex ball of hurt and I want to comfort him while shaking him by the shoulders for continuing the cycle of abuse. 

The Untamed/MDZS: I’ve been leaning away from Lan Wanji/Wei Wuxian lately, due to the hundreds of fics for them I’ve read. However, if you have a good “they’re both girls” AU or one with Wei Wuxian very deep into his compulsory heterosexuality... Well... I’m weak to those. Platonic Lan Qiren & Wei Wuxian. Lan Jingyi or Jin Ling focused. Pairings amongst the older siblings are fun. Definitely more lighthearted for this fandom. 

Tian Guan Ci Fu. I’m not actually finished reading this, so if you go there I ask you tip toe around spoilers (tbh i have spoiled some stuff for myself due to looking up fanfiction before. But I still don’t know exactly how all the big reveals happen). Just AUs for that fandom, to let me keep some of the mystery pls lol. Hua Cheng/Xie Lian. 

The Penumbra Podcast: I rarely go to fic in this fandom, because I just love the original so much. I guess I read a lot of fix-its in other fandoms and I don’t have that urge here. However, I’ve been having Some Feels about Rita and Jet and the Second Citadel OT3 (Damien/Rilla/Arum). Gen fic for this fandom would be lovely. 

Haikyuu: Iwaizumi/Oikawa, Akaashi/Kenma, Kenma/Kuroo, Asahi/Nishinoya, Akaashi/Bokuto, Bokuto/Kenma, Bokuto/Kuroo, Iwaizumi or/and Oikawa with Ushijima. OT3s and Polycues are welcome. I’m just not listing them because there’s so many out there. 

Captive Prince: Less emphasis on romance and more emphasis on Laurent being snarky. Anything with him being or becoming friends with someone. 

Past Fandoms That I’m Not Active In But Like: Snow White with the Red Hair, Star Wars, Yuri on Ice, Avatar the Last Airbender, Fullmetal Alchemist,

so I’ve seen some fics where MXY was a Female and WWX when alive had been male. But what about the opposite. What if WWX had been like the Yiling Matriarch or sth. Because she still was a Bi disaster (she did not know that she was Bi but she knew she was a disaster) and Heteronormativity was a thing she more easily accepts/realizes her feelings for LWJ. Everything still happenes the same because 15!LWJ was shy/repressed as fuck and WWX was a little too self-depricating to think “someone as perfect as Lan Zhan could ever like someone as her”. Like she knows she’s beautiful but she also knows she’s everything the Lan Sect dislikes in one person.

This could go two ways.

Either 1) Lan Zhan confesses when he visits Yiling they spend a nice Week being radish farmers together but then Jin Ling’s 1 month celebration comes up, then Qionqi path and the rest plays out the same and WWX still dies.

Then when he’s reborn into the body of a man WWX on her first day goas through a lot of Body-dismorphya (so she misses out on acting like a lunatic in front of the little lans) but then the arm shows up and she puts the issue aside for now. LWJ still shows up and saves WWX from revealing himself. This time WWX doesn’t run away because he knows LWJ wouldn’t hurt him for being resurrected (lol I forgot that word for a hot second and wrote “re-alived” XD) but because again Heteronormativity was a thing back then he thinks LWJ won’t want to be with him now and leaves broken hearted before LWJ can talk to him.

Dafan Mountain still happens and he summons WN before playing Wangxian. Then LWJ shows up saves him and bringes him back to CR only with WWX putting up less of a fight and mostly trying to keep herself from breaking down. The Juniors think it’s because MXY just lost his whole family, LWJ is confused and worried what has WY so down and how can he make him happy again, but then again her brother did just try to kill her so there is that and WWX is just broken because LWJ doesn’t even know it’s him and will never love him now and JC hates her and everything is terrible.

Because I don’t want to make this more angstier that this already is I let them have an actual conversation when they’re alone in the Jingshi (remember kids communication is important).

There LWJ is like “Hey Wei Ying, don’t be too sad. I’m sure Jiang Wanyin will come around to you being alive again and was just in shock today”

And WWX is like “Heh maybe. ...Wait Wei Ying?”

And then they have a conversations about feelings and it comes out that LWJ is still demi and fell for WWX and loves her/him in whatever body she/he is in.

The rest still happens the same only that they’re that one shameless couple no one want’s to be left alone in a room with.

Or 2) LWJ is too scared WWX dies and LWJ mourns for 13 years for a unresolved romantic attraction (just like canon basically)

Then WWX is resurrected  and has to deal with the fact that she’s now he (I think Gender wasn’t as progressed back then and the thought that he might still be she was ridiculous)

He still is only there for the arm to show up and then LWJ is already there.

This time WWX doesn’t think she lost his love but the chance to even have his love.

Everything goes the same as in 1 and then in CR they have a talk about feelings and get together.

Not everything is perfect. WWX still sometimes has to deal with the disphoria but all in all they’re happy to have LWJ and together they make that shameless  couple no one want’s to be left alone in a room with.

Okay, so I've been watching a lot of kdramas (or by extent Asian dramas) since March 2020, and there were a lot of characters who were so queer coded (or just had a fruityness to them)?? Anyway, so here's a list

But let's start with some canonically queer characters in mainstream dramas, shall we?

Park Mae Yi (Run On) - is ace and talks about her asexuality early on in the show

Go Ye Joon (Run On) - is gay and outs himself in the end, has a talk with another character about the discrimination and struggles of being gay

Ma Hyun Yi (Itaewon Class) - is mtf transgender, and while her being a cook is her main story arc, her confidence and pride of being trans is important too

Hikari Kuina (Alice in Borderland) - is mtf transgender and an absolute badass fighter as she grew up learning martial arts

Jung Seo Hyun (Mine) - is lesbian and (like every woman in this drama) an incredible independant badass

Now that we have that out of the way, let's move on to the actual queer-coding:

Seo Moon Jo (Strangers from Hell) - okay, he may be a psychopath and a serial killer BUT he calls Jongwoo 'babe' every chance he gets, and immediately threw his strategies out the window for him, so I declare him gay

Seo In Woo (Psychopath Diary) - again, similar to Moon Jo, the homoerotic tension of obsessive love is STRONG, and in his case, In Woo and Dong Sik are even mistaken as a couple at some point, he's definitely gay

Oh Mi Joo (Run On) - she just gives me bisexual wife energy, especially when you consider her chemistry with Dan Ah

Jang Bong Hwan / Queen So Young (Mr. Queen) - considering their souls are trapped in the same body, and Bong Hwan actually falls in love with the king at some point, they definitely fall into the genderfluid and queer spectrum

Han Se Ju (Chicago Typewriter) - like with Mi Joo, I have no actual reasoning other than vibes, and Se Ju just gives me incredible chaotic bisexual vibes, also his character is basically in a polyamorous relationship that's disguised with some bromance

Jang Man Weol (Hotel Del Luna) - okay, you cannot tell me that somebody who has been alive for 1300 years and is as flirty and cheeky as Man Weol is straight, she definitely falls on the mspec spectrum as well

So Mun (The Uncanny Counter) - again, this is based off vibes, but So Mun feels like a closeted bisexual kid (and boy am I speaking from experience here lmao)

Lee Yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed) - this man is not only an ancient god, but a fruity god at that. One, he has that bromance chemistry with his best friend, second his true love is kind of split into a male and a female soul if I remember correctly?? that's kinda queer

Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishou (Word of Honor) - I'm putting them together because they're technically canon in the source material, but their chemistry in the drama is still off the charts

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji (The Untamed) - again, they're gay in the novel but are demoted to "platonic soulmates" in the drama

Wen Qing (The Untamed) - my queen and her (not subtle) hatred for men flirting with her~ she gives me lesbian vibes and you cannot change my mind

Lu Yao and Qiao Chusheng (My Roommate is a Detective) - I don't know if this has a novel, but considering their immense chemistry, an incident of Yao introducing himself as Chusheng's boyfriend, and their overall vibes, they both give me bisexual vibes

Shang Xirui and Cheng Fengtai (Winter Begonia) - aside from the cinematography of this masterpiece, both Xirui and Fengtai are very queer, and canon in the novel

Rizuna Ann (Alice in Borderland) - she's giving me girlboss-lesbian-who-will-outsmart-you vibes, especially after her and Kuina became ~closer friends~ and solved the last murder case

Right, so I was just thinking about genderbend fics, trans fics, and body curse fics, etc. in regards to Wei Wuxian. (I’ve been thinking generally about how these explorations and interpretations each do and mean something different for readers.) If WWX was brought back into the body of a cis woman instead, you can do some fun exploration of WWX’s relationship to gender. 

Personally, I’m kind of imagining Wei Wuxian alternating between “well, I’m still a man, so I’m going to wear whatever clothing I like and sprawl inelegantly when I sit and do whatever the fuck I want” and “ah, well, since I’m a ‘woman’ now, I am obligated to find men attractive and flirt outrageously with them now” depending on what’s convenient or funny (or comforting) to him.

Also, because I am always fond of humor (especially slightly cracky humor), I think he would crack an unbearable number of “oh nooo, I am but a poor lonely woman in this big scary world, I should find a big strong man to marry me and take care of meeeee” jokes. Everyone in the vicinity suffers when WWX starts cracking “Lan Zhan, if no one else wants me, you’ll marry me, right? As one bro to another bro in the body of a woman?” jokes. Shameless!

The easiest way to do this is to make Mo Xuanyu a cis woman, except it’s also fun to brainstorm other options. I’ve seen Qin Su as the one who does the sacrifice-summoning ritual and that’s a fun idea. Unfortunately, MDZS is very short on female characters here, but in the same vein of Qin Su, if we’re talking about women who have lost their son and probably want the whole cultivation world to get fucked (JGY especially), if you want to get really weird with this particular premise and kind of cracky, there’s always Madam Jin. 

It would be such a mess. I am delighted just thinking about the mess of this. Jin Zixuan would probably have to stay dead for Madam Jin to have motivation for this, so we wouldn’t get to see Jin Zixuan react to this, but all of the other reactions would still be excellent. Every single one of them I can imagine is good. (Jiang Cheng, Lan Xichen, Jin Guangyao reacting to this... it’s all gold.) 

And there’s always Jin Ling’s reaction! 

There’s always Jin Ling having to deal with the fact that his embittered (possibly grieving in seclusion since his father’s death?) grandmother has sacrificed her body to resurrect his mass-murderer, Yiling Patriach, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation uncle! Who is now outrageously flirting with and definitely going to sleep with Hanguang-Jun! Near-adult life is already so damn weird!

I just want a fic either with trans Wei Wuxian or female WangXian where WWX gets pregnant (either by sperm donor or magic in the second case I straight up hate fics that claim you have to have het sex to make the baby die, or fuck it even magic mpreg deal with it) and WWX is just chillin in the dining room at lunch time when LWJ is busy and can’t make lunch rn (cause you know LWJ be makin they love all the meals they can) and LQR is like constantly on edge and wants to tell WWX to sit up straight so bad he’s vibrating with it but isn’t sure how to tell a pregnant person to sit up right when sitting up right might hurt them, when all of a sudden, WWX sits up a little and holds tummy going ‘oh’.

Well. Now LQR is immediately concerned. WWX okay?????? WWX does it again, and now LQR panics and actually asks if WWX is okay. WWX grins and tells him to give WWX a hand and LQR reaches out, thinking WWX wants help up or something, when WWX grabs his hand and puts it on the tummy.

At first. LQR is horrified. The impropriety!!! But then he feels it!!! A kick!!!!! Omfg doesn’t that hurt it hit so hard is WWX okay????

Lmao WWX def laughs cause Lan Sizhui did it the first time WWX made him feel the belly too. Lil Radish was scared the baby was hurting his Xian-Gege/Jiejie. WWX def would have laughed and squeezed his wittle cheeks. But he can’t do that with LQR, so he tells him to give him his other hand and brings them down to two places so LQR can feel the little kicks.

Anyways. I just want LQR to get slightly obsessed with WWX’s belly after that. That’s his grandbaby in there. He’s gonna be able to hold that little squirmy monster soon! Oh shit it’s probably gonna be as restless as it’s carrier. Ugh.

Either way. He doesn’t like, go out of his way to WWX’s side, but if WWX is nearby and sees Shifu being grumpy or upset or if WWX is just upset themselves, WWX demands LQR feel the kicks.

Lan Wangji and Lan Sizhui are actually majorly in favor of this because it means Shufu is happier and finally getting along with WWX.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

Ohhhh hmmm. The first scene that comes to mind that I remember feeling happy and good about is Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling in Wei Wuxian's room, in The War Is Over. There were a lot of headcanons and little things I shoved in there and although I was honestly unsure about the fic for a while after I posted it, I reread it again recently and I think I'm fairly pleased with it.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

Do you know, still amuses me when I realize the longest fic I posted this year is completely self-indulgent, angsty Chengxuan. I got converted to this ship after reading a pwp and then I got this many emotions about it. Definitely not a ship I thought I was gonna hop aboard when I got into this fandom.

28. longest fic you read this year

I believe that honor goes to 江山如有等 | It Seems The Hills And Rivers Have Been Waiting by the incomparable ScarlettStorm, which is 229k as of the last update and is still going. It's a Jiang Cheng/Female OC fic and if you would like to see our purple lightning disaster man simp for a trans woman who could bench press him if she wanted, this is a glorious, wonderful story. It's also got fun world building and I love all of this author's OCs.
