I kind of dig CQL Su's backstory for how unfair it was. Like, novel him you could see exactly why WWX and co were disgusted by him for his actions in almost handing over MianMian, but CQL him it's like... his friends were being slaughtered??? It just adds this sense of 'yeah king, kill the gentry' that matches Xue Yang more.
eh, for me the two narratives serve different purposes and I'm slightly fonder of the novel one. CQL SMS is good and very crunchy and also just. the sweetest boy and like you said, more overtly sympathetic; but:
Novel SMS sets up a more interesting 'character contradiction' in that he starts as a teenager who does something genuinely bad and cowardly (we know it, everyone knows it, he knows it) who can't quite match the local golden boy in skill... and then he grows up to be a sect leader, a brilliant powerhouse of a fighter, and a brave-to-the-point-of-self-sacrifice, loyal man. And he does it for the villain because the 'good' people treat him like crap. And he does it, crucially, offscreen.
No matter how he grows and changes, he's treated like a failed disciple for the Lan, a failed copy of LWJ. No other reason is given than 'he gets mad at being compared to LWJ and plays the guqin, the most common spiritual instrument.' He's not despised by WWX for being a coward in the past--WWX is pissed off in the moment, and then true to form forgets about it. He mocks SMS for daring to criticize the Lan while having once come from them, and later--when he remembers seeing SMS in the past--he's only concerned with why did you ruin my life, what did I do to you? And SMS' response is, basically, why do you think you're the main character?
SMS considers himself the center of the story when it's not about him. Watsonianly, it takes the form of people finding him arrogant and his anger unjustified; doylistically, it's fascinating to realize that he has a dramatic character arc that we never see, and interesting to read his baffled rage at LWJ--what reason does he have to act arrogant and get away with it? why is fate on his side and not mine? as an almost fourth-wall aware complaint. Why isn't SMS a main character? He just isn't. It's not his story. He was created for a certain role and he wants a different one, but it's impossible inside this framework. It's a frustration at the center of his character that plays in a fun way with other themes of the story (is it only perspective that makes a hero or a villain? etc).
And it's totally understandable that CQL sort of... shifts that an inch sideways and it becomes class-specific rage. What is class jumping but wanting a role you weren't given? The change of his Cowardice Event to something more sympathetic also makes sense in this context, and it's placement nearly side by side with Meng Yao's murder of the captain does drive in his increased similarity to his later villainous friends. I like CQL, genuinely. It feels like a less meta story to me, but that doesn't make it worse--just more self-contained, a little bit different overall.
But the novel's version of events is honestly more about audience perception than the involved characters, imo. People don't despise him later for what he did then, except (possibly; we see no indication but he could be thinking it) LWJ. It's on the audience to still only see him as the cowardly kid who nearly handed over Mianmian, just as the Lan see him as a failed disciple and others see him as arrogant beyond his station. Then Guanyin Temple displays so much that was concealed about everyone, and you find out SMS has been hiding his accomplishments and abilities for years, is not too proud to loyally serve the son of a prostitute, and is willing to die without hesitation.
What a character, what an arc. In a different life (story), he could have been great (the main character).
Not in this life, though.
and that's my extremely too many words overanalyzing essay on why novel!sms is my fave by a slim margin. it's about the tragedy of the meta implications that feel like they aren't really there in the more sympathetic/contained CQL version 👌

Ok, but the whole Wen Qing sacrificial Au is like one big clusterfuck. And Wei Wuxian wouldn't know shit about the functions of his own new body. And what if the eyes of the body change color as a reaction to the new soul inhibiting it. He would have monthly bleedings! He would have to deal with cramps and fuck! He would understand so much more about his Shijie and Madame Yu!
Also correlating with the homecoming gift, what if she found a way to package her knowledge as a gift and Wei Wuxian now understands so much better why Wen Qing was so pissed about his disregard for his own health all the time. And he starts to connect that knowledge and know-how to develop his talismans and cultivation further!
How would Lan Wangji react to see the Wen doctor again, only for her to paralyze him after a fight with a monster where Lan Wangji just was not at his best, and actually check him over as if it was the most normal thing to do. What if Wei Wuxian went on and found a way to heal the scars on Lan Zhan's back to a degree where it's not visible anymore unless you know to search for it.
And he would get suibian back as soon as possible and fly with it. He would have his sword back. And if people ask he would just flippantly say that it only responds to people Wei Wuxian trusts and held dear to his heart.
Ah, sorry about my rambling, I have brain rot about this thing now. And I had a WIP where I was leaning on the aspect that Wei Wuxian was the son of a servant and had servant skills as well... You make me more work ^^'
yessss i love the rambling!!! i see the next one, too!!! sorry it took me a minute there was brain fog and then wife birthday daytripping and then many sleeps and now we're here
i am now a little bit obsessed with the idea of wq somehow passing on her vast amounts of medical cultivation knowledge to wwx. or at least imparting enough of it that he can do nonsense wwx innovation shit. something something the formation and structure of her core is built around the use of certain skills and techniques and this might have happened with mxy too but all of his previous knowledge was based off of wwx's own.................. yeah. fascinating. fun. i love it.
also the idea of wwx actually trying to pull of just being wq -- at least in public because there's no way he gets away with that around lwj -- is patently hilarious to me. but also! who knows her better than wwx and wn anyway? who else could possibly pull that off if not them? also i do love the shenanigans that ensue in a good identity porn fic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay so if i'm being very honest, half the reason for this au even popping up in my head is that i, like @jasontoddiefor, love a good genderswapped resurrection fic specifically because all of the nonsense that comes with having a uterus. (and also the idea of wangxian biological babies, like hell yes, their breeding kink dreams can become a reality, but also only if they try hard enough because actual conception can be fucking difficult!) and yes, after the years of malnutrition and general anxiety of living under threat finally starts to recede, wwx gets to deal with a whole new set of problems! lucky boy.
as for lan yuan, i feel like he might be grateful to see his qing-jie's face again, even though he's forgotten it, but would then mourn her presence and his xian-gege's face. it would be rough for him. moreso than with mxy because wq's face mixed with wwx's mannerisms might actually trigger some more memories earlier? idk, what do you think?
ALSO. i can't get over lwj figuring out how to marry wq without arousing the suspicion of the entire cultivation world. like this is early in my head. this happens just a few years after wwx dies. so a lot of The Nonsense hasn't happened yet. he gets out of seclusion and then immediately goes for the next worst person imaginable? the escaped but somehow not dead last daughter of the wen? lqr would have a fit. lxc would be confused as hell. jc would be furious and hurt and so even more furious. nhs would, probably, figure it out pretty quickly, as would jgy, and now the race is on. like this would be such a political nightmare and i'm living for it!!

All the Things We’ll Leave Behind: ch 26, pt 6
Previously~
~
“You really don’t think your brother would—” he started to ask. He had known jwy for a long time—not well, but he had seen the boy on occasion be kind to other, if still kind with a scowl. He wasn’t sure if he completely believed the face the younger alpha was putting out to the world thee days was real—that it wasn’t a combination of fear and a desire to impress the older alphas in their social circle and his mother. If it really came down to it, jzxuan wanted to believe that jwy wouldn’t physically hurt anyone, and that even if he probably wouldn’t stand up for a stranger, that he would do everything in his power for his own sister.
His words, however, were cut off by shouting from within the restaurant, a cacophony of voices yelling and growling and jzxuan’s already twitchy instincts immediately began to urge him to go back—to check on lwj—AND to get as far away from the building as possible AND to stay and protect jyl—he was after all still responsible for her safety, and he wasn’t particularly inclined to face the wrath of Madam Yu… or worse, his own mother!
“What—” he began to ask, taking a tentative step towards the restaurant, instincts to protect his friend overriding the other instincts ripping through his body.
This time, his words were cut off by Chong-xiansheng being bodily tossed out of the building. The older man skidded through the dirt and jzxuan blinked at him before turning wide eyes up to see who had thrown him out, his breathing catching at the sight of lwj stepping through the doorway—a very pissed off—not to mention even hotter than usual—lwj.
“You,” the older alpha said darkly, taking slow, menacing steps towards the former-alpha, “will not speak to them that way.” Behind him, virtually all the teens who had been in the restaurant were poking their heads outside to watch the showdown, ones in the back pushing their friends and jumping to try and get a better view.
“Look man,” the older man said, raising his hands in surrender, “I didn’t mean any harm. It was a joke! Jus’a joke!” he laughed, seemingly unconcerned—or perhaps too drunk to care—about the murderous alpha stalking towards him.
“It was an inappropriate joke,” lwj said, sending a shudder down jzxuan’s spine. “It would be inappropriate to anyone, but especially towards teenagers. Do not,” he said sharply, “ever speak to them—or anyone else—like that again.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Chong-xiansheng said, leaning back on his hands, the rough dirt road likely digging divots into his hands. “I got it. I got it. Can I ge’up and go eat m’crepes now, man?”
lwj practically growled at the man when he began to push himself up, the former-alpha having enough sense to stop moving and wait for the other man’s permission to rise. lwj turned back towards the group of teenagers ogling at him. “Do you want him to leave?”
“Nah,” one of the alpha girls laughed, smiling brightly at lwj, her eyes moving much, MUCH too slowly up his body for jzxuan’s liking—lwj already had too many suitors! He didn’t need more!— "I don’t think he’ll say anything else so inappropriate again… maybe not anything at all! Although, just in case," she added, smiling even wider at him, “perhaps you should give us your phone number? That way, if he’s ever mean to any of us again, we can call you to make him mind his manners?”
jzxuan squeaked when his friend nodded and immediately rattled off his phone number for the group, virtually every one of them whipping out their phones to add his info to their contacts. Beside him, jyl laughed quietly, muttering something about how this wasn’t the first time he had given his number out to a group of strangers after doing something heroic—which, what!?
“My goodness,” a man’s voice called, the group of teens hastily squishing themselves back into the restraunt as the omega owner and an older man jzxuan assumed to be her husband stepped into the space they had just been occupying. Behind them, jwy appeared, squeezing himself around them to scurry over to his sister’s side. “Chong-xiansheng,” the man sighed, although jzxuan swore he saw a bit of amusement in the old man’s eyes, “I did warn you that if you kept mouthing off eventually someone would come along to teach you a lesson. At least this time, the damage isn’t as bad.” The man shook his head, muttering about people who never learned as he nodded at lwj and promptly turned around—to go back to the kitchen, jzxuan assumed, based on the scent of fruit and flour wafting off him.

One of the biggest problems with any half-serious reconciliation between WWX and JC is the fact that WWX's post-canon family, the ones he now loves as much if not more than JC, all have reason to loathe and mistrust the latter (LWJ - look at canon, LSZ and WN being the 'leftovers' (JC's word) he wanted put down and whose entire family he voluntarily led and contributed the most to slaughter. I don't think any of the three would 'ban' a detente but they couldn't possibly want JC (cont)
2/ in THEIR lives and why should they? WWX wouldn;t ask of of them. So how do you think the WWX and JC would manage to connect - just at Koi Tower? JL would probably like that, and it would respect WWX's other loved ones' feelings and history.
Anon, first of all - thank you for sending me my first ask? I am very much not an expert on anything mdzs, and have only written one (arguable) meta on why I like a ship. I haven't published any fanfic (due to my own insecurities, not necessarily because I don't write it, lol) on this topic either.
But, if you really want my little opinion about it, I can give you a couple thoughts! In a list, because that's how my brain functions.
1. Lan Shizui - He is going through a time after canon, but that is completely disconnected to JC! He probably has very few thoughts about the guy post-canon other than the fact that one of his adopted dads really doesn't like the guy.
He basically is rebuilding his identity as a Wen and learning more about them (implied by his post canon road-trip with WN) and is going to be busy reconciling this new identity he may have suspected was missing but didn't know about with his identity as a Lan. Jiang Cheng wasn't the only person at the siege! LQR and LXC were there too!! That's his uncle and (essentially) his grandpa! I think he's going to be way more preoccupied with the deep emotional issues from that than he will from any interacting WWX does with JC
And we also have to question how close is he with wei wuxian post canon in our fanfic. I know we as the fandom and fanfic authors love to make them act as a father and son, completing, along with LWJ, a nuclear family. But LSZ has lived the vast majority of his life without any idea he had a connection to the yiling patriarch! They share a cute moment at the very end, but he's off to find himself with WN. Lan Shizui has been raised by lan wangji and had wei wuxian as an occasional babysitter for 6 months or so when he was four, and he only has barely started remembering that time in his life.
When I look at Shizui I don't think he has the power or desire to stop WWX from reuniting with his brother. And, even if he wanted to, I don't think any reconciliation would make a big enough impact in his life such that JC was 'forced' on him. Even if jiang cheng visited the cloud reccesses, LSZ is gone. And even if they were there at the same time, would they be forced to interact? The way JC is most likely to be 'in [shizui's] li(fe)' is through Jin Ling. Which isn't going to be affected by the relationship between wwx and jc.
2. Wen Ning - Admittedly, I am the least familiar with his character out of the three you cited. But, although his big snapping moment with the golden core reveal, I don't know how specifically afraid of or pissed off at JC he is post canon. I think he mostly doesn't like Jiang Cheng for emotionally hurting WWX more than for anything involving the Wen. WN participated in the war, he knows what JC went through. I think that if he sat down for a minute and contemplated the things he said at the reveal, I think he would know they were a bit unfair. If he is going to be angry at JC for the burial mounds siege, he also has to be angry with LQR, LXC, a lot of unnamed cultivatiors from every other sect, and most minor sect leaders. Along with anger for the previous major sect leaders who are now dead.
And he wasn't even at the siege.
I think that most of wen ning’s anger at JC is on behalf of wwx, who he feels was wronged by JC. So if wwx wanted to reconcile, I highly doubt WN would stand in his way. And again, as with shizui, I don't automatically think that wwx reconciling with jc means that WN is automatically going to be forced to interact with JC.
3. Lan Wangji - Why does lwj hate jc? Seriously. You said 'look at canon', and I agree, LWJ does hate JC in canon. and JC responds to that hate with hate. It’s not hard to nail down - LWJ hates jc because of wwx. because even though he was at wwx's death and knows that JC didn't actually stab his sword into wwx, he firmly believes that the actions JC took drove wwx to his death. Its the same reason he hates himself during the timeskip.
That, and LWJ is used to being the only petty bitch in the room (cloud recesses). He doesn't have the emotional insight to recognize that sometimes yelling at someone can be a sign of how much you care. They have different communication styles, and that mostly comes with lwj judging how jc interacts with wei ying. Though we, as the audience, with wwx's pov and our own insight, see they love each other, lwj cannot. So he thinks JC is just actually being mean for no reason.
But again, like WN, he is weak for wei wuxian. if wei wuxian chooses to have a better relationship with his brother, LWJ might protest but I think he would ultimately relent.
This will mean he might have to spend actual time with JC, but ... he's chief cultivator. He's GOING to have to anyway. Not to mention, it seems like he did anyway, judging by their junior night hunt supervision.
I don't think wei wuxian would mind their continued animosity. In fact, in certain scenarios, like their night hunt chaperone death glare match, I bet he'd find it kinda funny.
4. You seem to taking specific umbrage with JC calling the wen remnant 'leftovers', and believe that he specifically wants wen ning and wen yuan to die. You probably took this specific word from chapter 73 of the exiled rebels translation of mdzs. If you look a bit closer, you can also notice that JC's next line of dialogue "I doubt you'll even return all of them". He is making this argument because he wants the brother he loves to be safe and somewhere JC can protect him. He is, throughout this entire scene, pointing out that this is a political disaster and how this hurts both his brother and the jiang. and even then, he does NOT expect all of the wen clan to be returned. He is expecting Wei Wuxian to smuggle a few (or even a lot!) of them away - perhaps people like granny and any children?
Also, wen ning is a fierce corpse who just killed some dudes. Although he did so justifiably, he is still the sort of demon that cultivators kill all the time, and wwx hasn't shown that its even possible to bring back his consciousness. We know he will, but that’s a ridiculous idea to the average cultivator. JC doesn't think he's telling WWX to kill a person at this point but a zombie, which they as cultivators kill all the time.
5. But, in the end, should LSZ, LWJ, and WN all hate JC's guts and refuse to even look at his fucking face post canon - they DO NOT control wei wuxian. WWX has met someone and listened to what they wanted him to so when he wanted the opposite perhaps three times in his entire life. If there is a reason that he thinks he should go talk to his brother, if there is a reason he thinks he should go to lotus pier, if there’s a reason he thinks his brother doesn't hate him anymore and wants to have WWX in his life, WWX is GOING to GO. That’s just his nature.
(the reasons are obviously the territory of fanfic)
WWX respecting 'other loved ones' feelings and history' does not mean denying himself of an equally important relationship in his life. Maybe it means not taking them when he goes to visit JC (and yes, I mean at lotus pier). Maybe it means not talking about Jiang Cheng to them. But it doesn't mean abandoning any hope of ever having a positive relationship with his brother again.
Reconciliation is not about them. Its not about how much hurt JC arguably caused other people surrounding WWX. Its about these two brothers reconnecting with the last person from their family living.

These fics are still missing!

1. hi, happy holidays! i’m trying to find a fic where lan zhan is a single dad. he’s friends with yanli and it was a cute fic :3 there was one scene where wq drops by and realizes that lwj adopted ayuan? i think ayuan was adopted shortly after his parents died? I would appreciate any help in finding this #15 of post
~*~
2. I still have a hope I can find this but there was a story where post-Sunshot Campaign an agreement was made with a Wen prisoner for WQ to transfer his core to WWX and when WWX goes to talk with the Wen before the surgery he finds out the prisoner is A-Yuan’s bio dad who volunteered. There is a chance this was a time travel fic but possibly not. YOU’RE AWESOME <;3 #7 of post

4. Hey^^ Is this where I ask for ficfinder? I really really need help with this and you’re and everyone on this blog is doing such a marvelous job <3 So, I’ve been searching ages for this fic… it was during their time at Cloud Recesses. WWX’s pranks escalate after he shows LWJ porn, so he does small things that are affectionate? (This is where I’m not clear what exactly happened in the fic) and at the end I think it was, I remember WWX buying a red cloth/veil (he thinks it looks like a wedding veil) during a visit to Caiyi with NHS an JC and using it to prank LWJ by sitting on his bed and waiting for him, red veil over his head, greeting him as his ‘bride’ and LWJ reacts badly (thinking wwx cruel) and starts tearing up and I think at that point wwx realizes he went too far (he was panicking about making LWJ cry) and they communicate and get together. #8 of post

5. Hi I was hoping that you could help me find a fic!! I remember that it was a modern au and wwx and lwj dated in high school but then broke up afterward. Wwx was broke in college but started a fashion channel on YouTube which blew up and now he’s kinda rich and part of the fashion community. He comes back to his home town for a reunion or smth and lwj is so happy about it and they manage to talk during the reunion. Lwj ends up kissing wwx but then wen chao walks in on them and accuses wwx of stealing his date bc lwj was forced to go to the party with wc. Everyone hears and gets mad at wwx, who gets pissed at lwj before running off. When Nhs finds out he chastised lwj for being an idiot. Uhh that’s all I remember! I think it was only a few chapters in when I read it tho…. Any help would be much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏 #6 of post

6. hey mojo i love your account and YOU!!!! [back atcha, darlin] for the next ficfinder do you or any of your followers know this fic? it was modern au. all i can remember is that one day a burglar broke into cloud recesses and lwj fought him and managed to break a tree in half while doing so. and wwx(and friends?) visits CR in a later day and sees the tree and gets very surprised. oh and lwj has a real sword with him and knows how to use it? sry its not much details. thank you in advance if you find it <;3 #1 of post

7. Hey, Mojo! Love your work. [Thanks!]  Can you help me find a time travel fic, only people have a “deja view” and the second time Wei Wuxian grows up with a mysterious mentor, most probably Baoshan Sanren? Jiang Cheng is lonely having grown up with only his dogs as friends, and when the Wen crash the Lan lectures, Niè Huaisang wonders why he thought someone from the Jiang would interfere. We’re being tantalized with the idea that as time goes on more definite things will be remembered. #5 of post

8. Hi… can u pls help me to find a story where there is an attack in cloud recesses and everyone except wei wuxian died. Attack was done by cultivators wearing green robes… Thank u in advance #7 of post

9. Hi! I once read a fic were WWX got pregnant in high school but everyone reacted so badly that WWX lied and said he lost the baby before running away. The Wen sibs took him in and supported he and A'Yuan for a few years until LWJ runs into them at WWXs art gallery and immediately realizes what’s happening. They then get 50/50 custody and pine for each other whenever they drop off A'Yuan. #10 of post

10. Hi so remember how canonically everyone thought Lan Wangji hated Wei Wuxian? And Wei Wuxian thought it was true? I’m looking for a fic that like, addresses that/also how Wei Wuxian was basically going crazy after he came back from the burial mounds. Particularly him explaining this to the juniors about how yeah, it was a little hard to figure out he had romantic feelings toward Lan Zhan, he had a lot going on #20 of post

11. Hello! I was wondering if you could please help me find a fic. It is not Wangxian, it is Wen Qing and Jiang Cheng- wwx ended up in the hospital, and wq is his doctor, and that is how she and jc meet. Jc and wq end up going back to her apartment, and it turns out jc is part of the mafia or something, but wq had already figured that out and accepted it. He has a zidian tattoo, and also wq drives a specific car (I forget the make and model) bc ‘it makes her feel tall’. That is all I remember, and I really hope it can be found. I thought I had put it in my bookmarks, but when I went to reread it, I couldn’t find it. Thank you!!! :) #3 of post

12. Hiii!! Can you help me find a fic where Lan Zhan scoured the Burial Mounds to find Wei Ying’s body, and he successfully did find WWX’s corpse. Then he digs a grave using Bichen to bury WWX body. Thank you in advance 💜 #8 of post

14. I read just a few words of this fic before my AO3 crashed but here goes: It’s in a universe where WWX can figure out who his soulmate is if he touches that person and he feels something/ envisions something.  He’s in a crowded place when this happens, his hand brushes against someone (and instantly knows it’s his soulmate) and he thinks it’s a maiden. He tries searching for her and in the bargain, bumps into LWJ, who is standing stoic looking at a hotel name or something. My AO3 crashed right after that so… #10 of post

16. Hi I’m looking for a fic and I wonder if you/your followers might know it. Modern era: WWX works at Gusu and went to quit bcuz he was pregnant with a-Yuan (wanted to tell LWJ) and then Xichen tells him that Wangji is getting engaged. WWX then leaves when a-Yuan is born to the US and return to China to see LWJ’s parents at the airport. They meet again at a party and LWJ knows that a-Yuan is his. Btw the engagement got cancelled bcuz LWJ loved WWX but it was too late. JC and JYL help/love WWX/Yuan #16 of post

18. hi!! i was looking for a wangxian fic but i rlly cant find it anywhere and i cant stop thinking abt it 😭 it’s a multi chaptered fic (its a long one, at least 50 chapters) where wwx is not a prt of the jiang sect but was raised together with wen qing and wen ning in their own sect where wei ying’s dad is alive and is sect leader. The unique thing abt the fic is that all of the characters’ swords can change into a human form (i remember suibian has a crush on bichen on this one)… they were also looking for wwx’s mum but i forgot the reason why ~ #17 of post

20. Going crazy because I can’t find this Hunger Games AU fic _anywhere_. Basically LWJ & WWX are the last two surviving tributes and WWX has already decided LWJ is going to win so he kisses LWJ and slits his own throat, only Xichen stages a revolution to break LWJ out and they all live happily ever after (if traumatized). I _know_ I read it awhile back and it was really good but now all I can find is The Hanging Tree, which is great but not the one I’m looking for. #14 of post

23. Ahhh I’ve been desperately looking for a while but since I can’t seem to find it I figured i might as well ask here: does anyone remember a wangxian modern au fic where lwj is wwx’s tutor but then finds out that Wwx doesn’t need a tutor (I think he was top of his class or something?? Also lwj might have mentioned Wwx being better than him at whatever subject was?? I think???) and wwx admits that he’s only attending tutoring because he wanted to spend more time with lwj. Pretty sure it was a college/university au, but it might have been a high school au! I think the tutoring took place in a library? 24. Hey I’m looking for a wangxian fanfic featuring hurt!lan wangji. Also, this is all happening post-canon. Ok, so if I remember correctly, in the fic the juniors mess up during a night hunt, and when they go back to the Cloud Recesses they are supposed to be punished with the discipline whip. But then Lan Zhan manages to orchestrate things so that HE is the one being punished in their place (I think he locks Wei Ying in the Jingshi so he won’t interfere). Can you find it? #6 of post

26. Hi! Maybe a long shot but I was wondering if you’d know of a WWX-JC reconciliation fic… There’s a scene where WWX and JC are discussing the flight from Koi Tower, and JC explained that nobody approached because they were all scared of LWJ, which stuck in my memory because I always found it hilarious that they all just paused on the stairs to let them speak, though I do love the scene. I think there was wedding planning as well. Appreciate your time for reading this anyway, and all the recs!  #5 of Post

27. Hello, I don’t really remember much from the fic other than its a wangxian romance and I remember a scene when the two are in the library (as teens) and wwx asked lwj to read to him. The chapter (or maybe the whole fic) was from lwj’s pov as he thought something along the lines of “nobody liked his voice and the other kids wouldn’t listen when he read in class.” Thank youuuu, if you can find it or just for looking anyway. #13 of post

30.  Hi! The work you do is very appreciated, thank you so much! If possible,  there’s a fic I’m looking for, for whenever you can fit this into a fic  finder post! I’m fairly sure it was post-canon, and Wei Wuxian was  living in Cloud Recesses, and when someone with a grudge against him  attacked it with demonic dogs, he locked the juniors in the library and  took the fight elsewhere to protect Cloud Recesses. I think there may  have been something about reliving bad memories or something similar? I  remember the Lans as well as Jiang Cheng and I think Jin Ling went  looking for him. I found a similar fic while looking for it, but it was a  single chapter WIP, while I’m pretty sure the fic I’m looking for had  multiple chapters up. That’s all I’m fairly confident about remembering,  sorry.    #14 of post

31.  Hello there! Thank you for your hard work catering to our requests all  this time. I wonder if you can help me find a fic. I remember all the jiangs really love WWX, especially YZY, she loves him and spoils him so  much that even when he got in trouble in gusu, she said its just LQR   being a stuck up. I am looking for a book that I read few months   back, I even went through the history and couldn’t find it loll. It’s   about how the mdzs characters watching wei wuxian life after the first   siege (?) Everyone (I think everyone) who died were resurrected to watch  his life as well. While watching they didn’t know that wei wuxian was still alive but not in their time period, he is alive, and pregnant and  now goes by the name Bai Ying or Bai Wuxian in the future. And when they  found out they decided to go and convince him to come back with them,  but he doesn’t remember them.    #5 of post

WWX eventually makes it to Koi Tower and says something   about how ‘they tried to kill our son.’ Thank you!    #17 of post

34. Honestly, Idk how to use this. But im swallowing my pride asking for   help in finding a fic. 41.  Hey.  Does any know this fanfiction where wei ying from the past amd   future swap. And like all the characters are put in one room and can’t   leave until they have watched the entire thing. And there is this scene where they find out about the core transfers surgery and the future wei  ying talks about how he gave up one of his kidneys for his jiang cheng.  There is also a scene where they talk about how future lan Zhan and wei  ying meet, they meet at like high school or something and there is this  entire thing here they explain high school to the people of the past. I  think it was a series on A03, it also had a another story which shows  past wei ying in the future and he wakes up in a hospital and like many  yao and xue yang are like good people. Thanks  for the answers on #3. I know it’s not Imperfect Memory. I’m almost   100% sure I haven’t read Silver and Gold, but I’m going to start now to make sure this isn’t the one, but I really don’t think so. I do *think* I  remember them being at Cloud Recesses when it happens? And Wei Ying is  definitely aware of who he is.
Okay,  having looked through Silver & Gold, that’s definitely not it   (though thanks for the rec, this is going on the TOP of my To Read   list). A few more thoughts. I think they were in Lan Zhan’s bed in the   Jingshi and Wei Ying just kind of…pulls them off his skin or something? And it doesn’t hurt Lan Zhan or disturb him.

WWX doesn't die, he is found and taken captive by the Jin Sect but spends 13 years in a coma under lock and key until he wakes up to interrogate. When the truth about the JGY is revealed, JL recruits LWJ to ferret out whatever else the Jins had been hiding, discovering the still comatose WWX. WWX is taken to Gusa in hopes of waking him up no one has much hope but then WWX stirs when LWJ plays Wangxian...
Jin Guangshan was, to put it lightly, pissed when they brought back a comatose Wei Wuxian from the Siege. After all, what he was after was Wei Wuxian’s genius. His inventions. And how could they possibly access them with him asleep?
Jin Guangyao had considered torture, at first, to try and wake him up. And he tried to get his subordinates to do it but they couldn’t even get close, intimidated by the resentful energy-soaked aura emanating from Wei Wuxian.
So Jin Guangyao had taken it into his own hands.
…….And failed miserably.
He couldn’t even touch the unconscious man before resentful energy lashed out at him, leaving deep, viscous, slow-healing wounds all over his arms. And any means of torturing him out of sleep from a distance was taken out of his hands, literally, by resentful tentacles.
When he brought Xue Yang in to try and wake Wei Wuxian up, the resentful energy he commanded made the situation a whole lot worse as the resentful energy leaking from Wei Wuxian wrapped him up protectively and crystalized the man in resentful energy.
“Well!” Xue Yang exclaimed cheerfully. “This is quite interesting. I’ve never seen resentful energy act so protectively before! And as much as I’d love to study this, I don’t think the resentful energy is willing to let me get close.” Just as he said this, a tentacle whipped out and sliced across Xue Yang’s cheek.
Jin Guangyao sighed, herding Xue Yang out and locking the room up. Wei Wuxian will have to wake up eventually. I just have to be patient. The injuries Wei Wuxian had weren’t terrible and with how strong Wei Wuxian’s golden core was, it’s only a matter of time before he heals. Perhaps he’ll wake up then.
But he didn’t. He never did.
...................................
After all the lies had been revealed and Jin Guangyao had been condemned and killed, Jin Ling decided to look through Jin Guangyao’s belongings, just in case there was more forbidden stuff that needs to be taken care of. Of course, he didn’t want to go in without any protection cause who knows what’s there! (Maybe there was another Wen Ning?) So he asked Hanguang-Jun to help him. He would ask his jiujiu, but he had been oddly despondent after hearing Jin Guangyao’s taunts that none of this would have happened had he trusted Wei Wuxian more. So asking jiujiu was out of the question!
Besides, Hanguang-Jun looked like he needed something to do.
In the end, they found a lot of stuff pertaining to demonic cultivation and restoring the Seal. As well as a warded diary containing dirt on a lot of sect leaders.
As Jin Ling wandered around, he heard a sudden shaking and worried about an earthquake until he turned around to see Hanguang-Jun staring at the entrance to a room that wasn’t there before. As soon as the man stepped in, he made a wounded sound that Jin Ling had never heard before before rushing in.
Jin Ling had the inkling that he probably shouldn’t follow, but curiosity got the better of him.
The room looked well-furnished and had all the makings of a bedroom, but that’s not what caught Jin Ling’s attention. Instead, it was a man encased in black crystal.
“Wei Ying.....” Hanguang-Jun seemed to sob. “Wei Ying......”
Wei Ying? As in, Wei Wuxian? My supposed deceased Dajiu???? What the hell is he doing here? Oh wait. That was a stupid question. Looking at all the material on demonic cultivation, Jin Guangyao probably wanted to get some information about it from him......
Considering there was nothing else in the room, Jin Ling silently made his exit. He felt like he shouldn’t have seen Hanguang-Jun crying. Oh well.
He busied himself gathering the stray papers and manuscripts and stuffed them into his qiankun pouch. He didn’t want to touch the dangerous looking stuff.
There was a sound, much like the shattering of glass, and Hanguang-Jun exited the room, a pale, but breathing Wei Wuxian cradled in his embrace.
They packed up the remaining objects in the room and left. After making sure Jin Ling had everything in order, Hanguang-Jun unsheathed Bichen and left without another word. Seeing the wide-eyed gazes of a few Jin elders, Jin Ling sighed. Wei Wuxian’s survival probably won’t be a secret anymore now.
...........................
Lan Wangji could hardly believe his eyes when he first saw Wei Ying. He had thought he was dreaming or this was some cruel sort of curse. But it wasn’t.
The feel of the resentful energy coursing throughout the crystal literally shocked him so he was sure he wasn’t dreaming. He touched Wei Ying’s face through the crystal.
“Wei Ying.....” He cried. “Wei Ying.....” You’re alive. You’re really alive.......
After some time, he pulled himself together. He had to figure out how to transport Wei Wuxian to Gusu to figure out how to break the crystal......
The crystal shattered abruptly, startling Lan Wangji. He was about to catch Wei Ying, when the resentful energy did it for him, causing Wei Ying to float in the air for a bit, before carrying him over to Lan Wangji and dropping him in his arms.
Lan Wangji was bewildered at the resentful energy’s actions, but nevertheless, that solved the issue of getting Wei Ying out of here.
He barely registered Jin Ling fluttering about the room, absentmindedly sealing and packing away the dangerous objects. He helped Jin Ling settle the items they found in the secret room before taking off to Gusu without another word.
.
.
Wei Ying did not wake up no matter what anyone did. Now that he had been absolved of any and all crimes had been accused of, his uncle had allowed Wei Ying’s presence, in fact, even looking quite guilty. Lan Qiren had been the loudest voice in the Lan sect about ridding the world of Wei Ying.
But three days passed without any change to Wei Ying’s state.
Most healers had given up hope, some even citing that the damage to Wei Wuxian’s soul was probably too great to ever allow him to awaken--not that they could check that. They all said that he probably didn’t want to wake up. After all the cultivation world had done to him, Lan Wangji wouldn’t blame him.
But he was human, he was selfish. He wanted to hear Wei Ying again, no matter what.
Sitting by his side, Lan Wangji brought out his guqin, playing a song he hadn’t touched in over a decade. He poured all his love, all his longing and passion into the playing, hoping that maybe, Wei Ying would hear it and answer.
It was just wishful thinking. But Lan Wangji had spent thirteen years wishfully thinking that Wei Ying was alive and he was right.
He just.....He wanted---
A soft groan broke the air and Lan Wangji stopped playing, rushing over to Wei Ying’s side.
Wei Ying’s hand twitched and his eyes fluttered.

It’s not much but I do take joy in JC having to see WWX’s inventions even long after he died. I just know he had to of completely lost it seeing the flags catch on with the sects
I'd take a lot of joy if jc took a long walk on a short pier... I mean what? Who said that. Anyway I do get the feeling that jc derived no small measure of schadenfreude seeing the cultivation world turn against WWX and condemn him because in a way it validated his own mindset/feelings. So It's likely seeing WWX's inventions being used, by the Lan Clan no less, pissed him off.
You know jc is generally a sheep so he wouldn't go after an entire bigger clan for using them but he wanted Jin Ling to kill MXY FOR A PAPERMAN! So I wonder how difficult it was for those unaffiliated with powerful Clans to use any of WWX's methods without jc deciding they’re WWX and taking them to be tortured. After all jc is so crazed he even tried to challenge LWJ for MXY... Plus as Lan Jingyi says his standards for what constitutes a demonic cultivator and therefore possible WWX are not very stringent:
"Not to mention, Chief Jiang suspects everything that moves. If he tries to catch everyone, when will he ever be done? And look at yourself, playing your flute like that…hmph”"
But anyway back to how brilliant WWX is!!
As for why the flags looked familiar…how couldn’t they? The inventor of the yin summoning flag was none other than the Yiling Laozu himself! It seemed that though all the cultivation clans had furiously called for his head, they had no qualms about using the things he’d invented… (chapter3)
Cultivators had a very strict classification system for “vicious ghosts.” If a ghost killed one person a month for three consecutive months, it could already be classified as a vicious ghost. Wei Wuxian had been the one who had come up with these standards, but cultivators most likely still used them. He was the top expert on these types of things, and as he saw it, a ghost which killed once a week already counted as one that killed very frequently. (Chapter 5)
Don’t you remember who invented these compasses? I’ve never heard of anything disturbing the direction the needle points.”
“What exactly do you mean by that? Why are you asking such weird questions? Of course I remember evil wind compasses were invented by Wei Ying, but just because he invented something, doesn’t mean it’s all beautiful and perfect. Aren’t people allowed to question him?”
“I didn’t say you weren’t allowed to question him, or that his things were perfect. There’s no need to spew mud everywhere, your highness!” (Chapter 7)
In all fairness, the cultivator who had questioned him wasn’t wrong. The evil wind compasses in use were only the first edition, and indeed left something to be desired when it came to accuracy. Originally, Wei Wuxian had worked to improve them, but who told people to destroy his home before he was done? So he had no option but to inconvenience everyone and continue to force the inaccurate, first edition compass on them. (Chapter 7)
Sassy WWX alert. lol. ofc we find out the compass was working just fine. Even that first edition.
"By granting wishes, it could obtain the souls “voluntarily” offered by the wishers. After all, it was a fair exchange—each got what they wanted and gave up something in return, so it appeared reasonable and just. This was why the evil wind compass’s needle wouldn’t move, and why the yin summoning flags didn’t attract it, and why the swords and talismans had no effect. The thing on Dafan Mountain wasn’t an evil spirit or monster at all—it was a goddess!"
Then ofc the Summoning of the Painted Eyes:
The disciples inside were speechless and stupefied.
Previously, they had only heard descriptions of a few vile, unorthodox techniques from their seniors, or from their books. At the time, they hadn’t been able to understand it: “If these techniques are so vile, why do so many people want to learn them? Why does the Yiling Laozu have so many imitators?” But now that they had seen one of these techniques with their own eyes, they finally knew why such practices were the subject of such fascination. Moreover, this was only the tip of the iceberg, this “Summoning of the Painted Eyes.” Thus, once most of the youths had recovered from their stunned silence, their expressions, far from repulsed, were full of irrepressible excitement. They felt as though they had gained a lot of first hand experience, and when they returned home, they would have a lot to tell their fellow disciples. (36)
Xue Yang: “Of course. Ever since you entered and whistled, I thought you were a little strange. So I chose to join in on the action personally to get a reading. Sure enough, you were able to produce so much power from even such a low level technique as the Summoning of the Painted Eyes. You must be its inventor.” (37)
WWX is so cool for this because he doesn't hoard inventions he thinks might help others, but he's very circumspect about what he shares so others don't misuse it. When he realized the power of the Yinhufu for ex, and the fact that it could be used by anyone who possessed it, he sought to destroy it before he died. But something like the compass seems to be in the possession of many (⁀ᗢ⁀)

lwj is almost as guilty for all the things jc is criticised for
Everyone is guilty for all the things Jiang Cheng is constantly criticized for. Torturing cultivators? Check. Not helping the Wen remnants? Check. Not standing by Wei Wuxian? Check. Shouting? Check. Lying? Check. Being an asshole at some point in their life? Absolutely check.
Everyone jokes around about the Lan’s Silencing Spell, including myself, but um, using your sect’s magical coercion spell to silence someone else’s voice multiple times is actually kind of fucked up? Nobody says anything about the Lans and Nies being equally, if not more so, complicit in what ends up happening with the Wens and Wei Wuxian, but it’s still Jiang Cheng who gets the most criticism, and I will never be okay with this.
Hell, Wei Wuxian himself committed pretty much all of these! As much as we love Wei Wuxian for his endlessly giving heart, we should keep in mind that he also didn’t do anything about the Wens until Wen Qing and Wen Ning were involved. That isn’t a criticism. That is just the nature of the society and culture that they live in, where blood feuds are a thing and wiping out a clan who killed your family is simply an equal and just exchange regardless of individual involvement. Wei Wuxian committed a massive cultural taboo for helping the Wen remnants. That isn’t to say he shouldn’t have helped, or that everyone isn’t complicit in the death of a bunch of villagers who were trying to move on, but that responsibility and criticism certainly shouldn’t only land squarely on Jiang Cheng’s shoulders.
Especially when Jiang Cheng was still little more than a child himself. The Jiang sect was completely wiped out. Jiang Cheng was barely holding onto any political power as it is. They were being intentionally left out of political meetings by the other three sects. They were extremely vulnerable to being swallowed up and becoming subsidiary to the Jin sect. Jiang Cheng had an immense responsibility to his people who walked with him through war when he had nothing to offer them at time other than his word, and part of that responsibility was to not go around pissing off your next door neighbors who had a hell of a lot more power than you do at the moment.
And amidst of all this, Jiang Cheng was being actively lied to the entire time! He couldn’t possibly have known that Wei Wuxian, his genius cultivator shixiong, no longer had a golden core, whose only option was now demonic cultivation and who was neck deep in a veritable thunderstorm of trauma and self-hatred. Especially when Wei Wuxian was constantly telling him he was fine. Especially when Wei Wuxian was doing everything he could to make sure Jiang Cheng could never know the truth. While I do think Jiang Cheng was wrong about what options were available to him, I personally think he was the least obligated out of everyone to help.
You know whose sects didn’t get wiped out? Who still had political power and was actually at the table when the remaining Wens and labor camps were being discussed? Who still had experienced disciples and opinionated elders? Who had at least much more experience navigating the complicated web of political manipulations than Jiang Cheng? The Lans. The Nies. Both equally capable of putting a stop to Jin Guangshan. Both equally responsible for the murders of a bunch of villagers. Both absolutely one hundred percent more obligated to do so and in a position where it was possible than Jiang Cheng was.
But sure, let’s freaking blame the traumatized teenager whose family and sect were slaughtered for not being able to help.

"Boys will be boys" logic is interesting since WWX himself basically uses that exact excuse in the book when he tells LWJ not to take JC's homophobic rant/assault seriously in the ancestral hall bc that's just how JC is, as if WWX himself wasn't furious when JC targeted LWJ in that scene. A lot of WWX's famed unreliable narration is rationalizing the crazy shit JC does but sometimes people tend to take it at face value.
Yes, exactly! That is such a huge thing. WWX spends so much time telling himself (and through himself the audience) that oh, it can’t be helped when JC mistreats him, JC is just like that, it’s totally fine, he doesn’t mind, and we see how that viewpoint was encouraged and strengthened by the people around him, especially JYL (sorry Shijie but it’s true). Hell, you could argue that this particular aspect of his character was entirely her doing, given YZY just thinks he should be subordinate to JC in all things and JFM mostly ignores JC’s behaviour; it’s just JYL going for the “oh boys will be boys, you’re strong and always smiling, you can take it” angle.
...Actually, let’s go into that a bit more because it very much gets buried under the “best sister” shit; I am prepared to argue that JYL consistently taking JC’s side did serious damage to WWX. Like, she was the only Jiang who consistently showed him affection and support and he convinced himself that it was unconditional! But the “unconditional” aspect was an illusion entirely based on his ability to consistently and convincingly pretend that JC wasn’t hurting him. WWX isn’t stupid, I don’t doubt for a second that he knew JYL would take JC’s side if it came down to it. She always takes JC’s side from day one. Literally; she hears WWX say he’ll take the blame for JC chasing him out of Lotus Pier and getting WWX’s leg broken while all JC did was come out looking for WWX personally (instead of doing the smart and more helpful thing and getting adults to help) because he was scared he’d get in trouble and he got a little scrape because he was running through the woods like an idiot because, again, he was too scared of getting in trouble to GET ACTUAL HELP THAT WASN’T A CHILD and she’s like “Yeah, that sounds reasonable and fair and not like a really, really bad precedent to set with a kid whose safety relies on my family liking him”. ...There’s also an aspect of “Sure, it can’t hurt to let the kid my mother very clearly hates take responsibility for something that he could be punished for by someone with a motive to take everything possible as a wrongdoing on WWX’s part”, but to be fair at this point she doesn’t know YZY will whip WWX for literally anything she can even slightly suggest is any sort of wrongdoing on WWX’s part. And let’s not pretend WWX wasn’t punished for JC getting hurt; come on, it’s YZY, she punishes him for sunbathing.
This is a running thing going forward in their dynamic, too! JC does something horrible, JYL immediately starts in on the “Oh, boys will be boys, A-Cheng might get upset if you call him out on his shit” shtick if WWX shows the slightest trace of dissatisfaction with being treated like garbage, WWX smiles and forgives JC for whatever he did without question, there’s a period of calm, the cycle repeats. JYL very much teaches WWX that he cannot EVER show any unhappiness with JC’s threats and insults. If he ever shows so much as a shred of anger or sadness or generally being upset at the way JC mistreats him JYL takes JC’s side. At most she’ll tell JC that maybe he should back off a little while basically telling WWX to grin and bear it because JC might be slightly upset if anyone ever calls him out on being horrible to literally everyone. And don’t even get me started on the whole “Oh you’re always smiling” bullshit, talk about teaching a mistreated orphan that he has literally no right to look sad about anything ever. Like, let me put it this way: WWX doesn’t even feel he can go to JYL about JC TRYING TO KILL HIM. That’s a lot? It’s a lot? And it never really gets discussed in any way? WWX doesn’t feel like he can tell his supposed sister who supposedly loves him unconditionally that her brother tried to murder him like three times and when the third time comes up JYL takes JC’s side because JC’s arm got broken in the process of the staged fight where JC stabbed WWX in the gut and that’s fine and healthy apparently. Stan WQ, the actual best sister (god I love WQ).
Anyway, now that I’m done enraging the fandom with my tangent about how much JYL sucks as a sister to WWX... Yeah, WWX insists that JC’s attitude can’t be helped because JC’s just like that even when he very clearly doesn’t buy that? He’s obviously pissed when JC goes after LWJ to the point of genuinely going after JC for it... but when they get away from JC he goes into the “Oh, he can’t help it, don’t get mad at him”. And in this particular case part of it is him panicking because JC’s homophobic ranting (and LWJ’s clear anger at it) left him questioning his and LWJ’s feelings and the mutuality thereof, but it also... really does throw every other time he insists JC’s behaviour is fine into question. Like, we know he’s not buying his own line in this scene! He was furious at JC! He’s still furious and upset! But he feels the need to cover for JC. Even after he’s realized that JC’s behaviour wasn’t okay, he still feels like he has to protect him from anyone else getting angry at him. WWX knows JC’s behaviour isn’t okay and that it’s not fair that JC treats him the way he does and I’d argue (especially at this point in the story) that he deserves better than JC’s treatment... but he still insists that JC is just like that and it’s fine.
That throws every single time WWX smiles through JC’s mistreatment into question, I’d say; we know he’ll react this way even when he knows that JC’s behaviour isn’t okay, so who’s to say he ever isn’t aware that JC’s behaviour isn’t okay? In CQL XZ does an excellent job of showing that at least in that continuity he is extremely done with JC’s shit even from when they’re fifteen; the novel is as far as I remember a little less clear, but it’s still pretty obvious that he’s not enjoying the way JC treats him. He knows that the way JC treats him is hurtful and upsetting and sometimes even frightening (think of the times JC threatens him with dogs and he’s clearly scared, which is a whole other thing because either he’s so scared of dogs that even the threat terrifies him or he has zero doubt that JC for sure would set dogs on him, which is a big thing either way and also I’m still not over how CQL JYL laughs when JC threatens WWX with dogs even though WWX is clearly scared and she totally would’ve laughed if that happened in the novel too but showing it so blatantly and then never actually getting into how messed up it is is just unnecessary), but he feels like he has to smile through it and cover for JC, just like when they were nine.
Anyway yeah, for a fandom so obsessed with WWX being an unreliable narrator the MDZS/CQL fandom sure does miss a lot of times where WWX is actually being unreliable, huh.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 19, part one
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff) (Previous Post)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Tumblr media
Chilling in Yiling
We start off with Wei Wuxian hanging out in a busy area of Yiling, which is a really dumb place to pick for a fugitive rendezvous.
Tumblr media
He's wearing a fashionably distressed brown robe, and a woven disguise hat, that makes him invisible to his enemies until the moment he takes it off, kinda like the mask he wears in his second life. Unfortunately he is a polite boi so he takes off the disguise hat when he goes indoors to get a bite to eat, and promptly gets smacked down by Wen Zhuliu.
Tumblr media
Xiao Zhan's stunt double is really good at this wire-pull+table-smash move; this is the second time Wei Wuxian goes crashing through a table (the first one being when Yu Ziyuan was beating him). This time he clutches his now core-less abdomen, in a move we're going to be seeing a lot of, going forward. Abdominal surgery is a bitch. OP can personally attest to this.
Wen Zhuliu provides some comic relief by looking at his hand in puzzlement; he clearly can tell Wei Wuxian has no golden core, but he isn't going to bother telling Wen Chao that.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao gloats and steps on Wei Wuxian's hand while Wei Wuxian stares at his shoe and OP wonders, not for the first time, how they make rubberized zig-zag treads in Ancient Fantasy China.
(more after the cut)
This is all happening in the Yiling Wine house where Wei Wuxian will later share the most important meal of his life, the one in which A-Yuan lays claim to Lan Wangji, ultimately giving LWJ a reason to live long enough for Wei Wuxian to be resurrected. If that doesn’t deserve a good Yelp review, nothing does.
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Tumblr media
While Wei Wuxian gets ready for his big whump scene, Jiang Cheng is dreaming, and looking absolutely breathtaking in this deceptively simple robe, that's made of a really complex fabric, that catches the light all over its surface.  The lighting here is warm and romantic, giving everything a nostalgic glow.
He looks around the courtyard in his dream, and sees Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian come running in the gate carrying kites.
Tumblr media
A child fetching a kite was the first casualty of the Wen attack on Lotus Pier, so this image may already be a little fraught for Jiang Cheng. In this initial image of his family, Jiang Cheng isn't present as a child, but then his junior self comes running up, to be warmly greeted by his mother.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng's reaction to the scene playing out in front of him is not a simple one. We've seen him externally expressing his trauma at the fate of Lotus Pier and his family - his anger and his despair - and this dream shows us his private, interior trauma.
Tumblr media
His body has been repaired by Wei Wuxian and the Wens, but his psyche has not.
Tumblr media
This family interaction can't possibly be one that ever happened. It's too lively, too affectionate, too comfortable. The family he was part of as a young adult was cold, angry, cracked.  Families don't change that much in 10 years, unless there's a major trauma that alters things in a fundamental way.
Even the glimpses we got of his childhood contradict this image. This warm group is not the family of "I sent your dogs away" or "wait in the cold until Jiang Cheng lets you in" or "I won't tell Clan Leader Jiang what happened" or "I'm only 11 but I'm in charge of soup and bedtime already"
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng smiles at the affection he sees enacted in front of him, but quickly moves to grief. When a toxic person dies, you don't just lose the relationship you had with them; you lose the hope for a better relationship. Perhaps Jiang Cheng has always imagined this version of his family; now nothing like it can ever come to be.
The pleasant scene vanishes into nightmare, as his mother starts bleeding from her eyes, ew. This is like Nie Mingjue when he qi deviates, but dream Yu Ziyuan is perfectly chill about it.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is not perfectly chill about it.
Tumblr media
He turns around to see Lotus Pier burning. When he turns back, his family has been replaced with Wen Zhuliu, who is particularly gleeful as he reaches into Jiang Cheng's chest and melts his core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng wakes up on the mountain, alone (as far as he knows), and quickly stands and boots up his new golden core.
Tumblr media
It's purple, because of course it is. King. The nightmare is gone and he smiles, maybe for the first time since the attack on the pier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a moment that is probably going to feel really embarrassing in hindsight, he kneels and bows toward the mountaintops to thank Baoshan Sanren, who is totally not there.
Wen Ning, on the other hand, is there, although we only see a little bit of his belt and robe as Jiang Cheng walks off to Yiling to meet his brother.  This entire plotline walks a very weird line in which the audience is told just enough about what’s really happening to be confused, but not surprised.
Do the Whumpty Whump
After some initial roughing up, Wen Chao has his dudes stand Wei Wuxian up so he can question him without actually getting any information out of him at all. They take turns calling each other dogs, with Wei Wuxian saying that when Wen Chao talks he just hears a dog barking. (Of course if he really heard a dog barking he'd be terrified)
Tumblr media
Then he says "isn't that right" to Wang Lingjiao, and Wen Chao gets super pissed; don't disrespect me to my woman.
Tumblr media
He has his minions do a Nancy Kerrigan to Wei Wuxian's knee and then kick him for a while.
Tumblr media
Then they kick the shit out of the camera operator.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao is really not about fighting his own fights.  He also keeps threatening to have Wen Zhuliu melt Wei Wuxian's core, and Wen Zhuliu keeps popping up his hand and then putting it back when Wen Chao changes his mind, which gets more hilarious every time I watch it. Feng Mingjing’s physical embodiment of Wen Zhuliu is endlessly entertaining, even in scenes where he has literally no lines.
I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost
Wei Wuxian continues to goad Wen Chao, telling him that more torture is good because then he'll die with loads of resentment. He says that after he dies, he will come back as a ferocious ghost, which is...almost exactly what happens, except he stays alive for the ferocious part.
Tumblr media
They go back and forth about the feasibility of this whole haunting plan. Wang Lingjiao is the voice of reason, for once, arguing the "ghosts aren't real and anyway fuck this guy" position.
Wen Chao thinks that he can’t haunt them because of cultivator security hardening procedures soul-calming rituals, but Wei Wuxian wasn't born into a gentry family so didn't have the anti-fierce-ghost treatment that other cultivators get.
Tumblr media
This is the only time in the whole of the show when Wei Wuxian says, himself, that he's the son of a servant. He's using his reputation as a commoner to bolster his threats.
Wei Wuxian is working hard to put on a scary-guy persona, which works pretty well on Wang Lingjiao but not as much on the rest of the group. Three months from this time, however, he will have become the scary, vengeful creature he's currently spitballing about.  He will also become way, way better at torture than the people who are currently mistreating him.
Tumblr media
Wang Lingjiao and Wen Chao go through a whole sequence of ideas about what to do with him. For whatever reason Wang Lingjiao doesn't insist on chopping his arm off even though she's been craving it for ages.
She does gleefully burn his burn some more, causing it to bleed directly into the giant obvious bag he has hanging from his belt leaking resentful energy. Which the Wens do not take away or search.
Tumblr media
Wen Chao, incidentally, starts calling him Wei Ying during this encounter, which is rude of him. Tch.  Finally Wen Chao decides on a plan, which involves sword-flying effects so terrible that no soul can survive them.
Jiang Cheng is looking for Wei Wuxian in town, wearing a woven hat like Wei Wuxian’s.  This...is not a disguise. If you want to be inconspicuous, maybe take that giant piece of silver off of your head.
Tumblr media
He hears random people talking about the Wens being in town, and then he apparently looks up at the sky and sees the Wen dudes flying on their swords with Wei Wuxian, but it looks so ridiculous that Jiang Cheng's mind cannot process what he is seeing.
While they "fly," Wen Chao delivers a massive brick of exposition about the burial mounds, while Wei Wuxian looks genuinely frightened. The VFX of random, undifferentiated mountaintops and clouds do nothing to sell this menace, but the exposition is actually pretty good, creating a real sense of disturbance and threat.
Tumblr media
Then they toss him in, and we go from the terrible VFX of sword flying to a visual effect that they mercifully did really well throughout the show - the black resentment smoke. This time it catches Wei Wuxian and holds him for a few moments, before dropping him the rest of the way to the ground. It also apparently pulls the turtle sword out of his belt bag, but we don't see that part.
They Say That Every Man Must Fall
Having seen Wei Wuxian at his lowest point (so far) and dream Jiang Cheng also in deep distress, we go to the Dafan Wen sibs, who have also reached a breaking point. Because they helped Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, they are traitors to their clan - unquestionably so - and are being punished for it, with Wen Ning having been tortured in addition to being locked up.
Tumblr media
I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released
You know how Lan Xichen successfully argued for Wen-Clan-Member Meng Yao's life and status, because Meng Yao betrayed Wen Ruohan to help them? Even though Meng Yao killed a bunch of Nie guys? Wen Ning and Wen Qing also betrayed Wen Ruohan and helped the Sunshot Campaign, without killing a bunch of guys. They should have been treated as allies by the four other clans, but they got diddly.
I’ve Been Dead Once
We return to Wei Wuxian in the burial grounds, where he's lying on the ground surrounded by resentful energy and by strained, desperate voices calling his name. This whole sequence is remarkable, since it effectively communicates the horror he's experiencing, through little more than Xiao Zhan's face and good sound design.
Tumblr media
I hang around dying to be tortured  You'll never be alone in the bone orchard
The voices call four versions of his name. A variety of voices call him Wei Wuxian, Wei Gongzi, and Shixiong, which (I think) is what the young Jiang disciples would have called him. And in the midst of those voices, Lan Wangji's voice, low and calm, saying "Wei Ying." Upon hearing that Wei Wuxian starts to drag himself up.
Tumblr media
For a show with definitely no zombies in it, they sure do use the visual language of zombie films for Wei Wuxian's first motions after hitting the ground. Starting with twitching fingers, then gradually pulling himself halfway up and crawling, lurching across the ground. Wei Wuxian comes slowly back to life, the very first member of his army of the dead.

He makes his way across the ground toward the floating turtle sword. Along the way he accidentally grabs the world's most bowlegged thigh bone; the lack of sunshine in the burial mounds puts the skeletons at risk for rickets.  All of the skeletons in the show are exactly what you would expect from the practical effects team that made the demon hand and the animatronic dog.
The turtle sword is roiling with resentful energy, and is talking to Wei Wuxian as he crawls toward it, asking if he wants revenge. And what a coincidence, he DOES want revenge.
Tumblr media
He grabs the sword and plunges it into the ground in an explosion of resentful energy. (Ground: why you gotta take it out on me?)

The sequence ends with the most compelling, ominous shot of Wei Wuxian's face...a new man.
Soundtrack: 1. I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan 2. Beyond Belief by Elvis Costello
Writing Prompt: The Day Wei Wuxian arrived, from the POV of a Burial Mounds ghost.

Speaking of Lans, I don't think anyone's brought up Z!LXC yet? On one hand plenty of room to avoid getting the most miserable ending of any living adult. On the other hand you have to live in Gusu forever. Brightside they probably can't make the sect leader do handstands?
you know he did those handstands for fun, with lwj, right?
(while gossiping with his little bro)
z!lxc, very correct that this situation has the most leeway. however, nothing wrong with living in gusu, as long as z!lxc gets to travel beforehand (at their heart zyx-incarnations are homebodies).
the situation with mme lan hurts. whatever the situation, be it she chose this willingly or 'willingly', qingheng-jun's actions as well - z!lxc is well-versed in living in a family where things are wrong but people refuse to see or acknowledge it. he's not allowed to ask about his mother's situation. he's not allowed to see either of his parents more than once a month. it's not that his uncle (holy shit, what god did i piss off last life?!) is so pedantic that he's trying to bend a toddler into the unyielding form of gusu lan perfection, but the man genuinely seems at a loss for what to do. he has no idea what to say, how to act, how to raise a child he never asked for. and likely, there's some 'younger brother syndrome' there, too - he got his way often as the second young master of gusu lan, a young master of intellect and impeccable behavior, and the former protection of qingheng-jun.
ah, well. z!lxc can be a better child this time around. now that he knows that he can't just do things on a whim, how much trouble a curious tot can cause the hard-working adults around him... there's enough new things that z!lxc can keep preoccupied in a quiet place like the cloud recesses. (obviously, they need to get a good grade in Lan, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve)
things are fine for a few years. the lan elders try not to gossip (and they've learned to shut up with any passive aggressiveness when z!lxc learns to weaponize his big, guileless eyes and say "asking elders for their guidance, what constitutes as 'gossip' in regards to rule number -")
his parents had life to them. that was the odd thing - mme lan took a few years before meeting him at three years old. he didn't really know how to act with a parent in this dynamic (not that he knew, ever), but decided you can't go wrong with a present and tea.
(mme lan, no matter her complicated feelings or whatever, sees this little boy doing his very best with his toddler coordination to pour the tiny tea set gifted by lqr, handing her a very shiny bead that "Huan-Huan bought in Caiyi Town" and she -)
(lqr, relieved that long-term babysitting wasn't as difficult as he foresaw, and fucking thankful that z!lxc was content to learn via mimicking him)
qingheng-jun wasn't as absent as they made him out to be in the story. while secluded, he took interest in the day-to-day of his son, and his separated wife.
what goes wrong?
maybe it was always wrong. no one was willing to explain anything. the years sap on his parents' mental fortitude, and by the time a tiny lan zhan is born, qingheng-jun has basically faded away and mme lan has been tempered into mildness and exhaustion.
little lwj is not the same experience as a tiny adult z!lxc. it doesn't get easier once he grows enough to walk on his own. his little brother is already quiet and stubborn, two traits that make it difficult to negotiate anyone, let alone a developing human. but no matter how tiring, how confusing, how vexing, z!lxc is compelled to try.
he is sure this second life is some sort of punishment. another younger brother, just as difficult to raise, pops into mind. but his first self was unprepared, as a child only a year and a half older. personal wants and needs, ambitions, the desperation to flee a claustrophobic household, pressures threatening to smother,... but they all feel like excuses. he cared about reputation. he cared about fleeting friends. he didn't want a shackle like this dependent brother, tying him down like the already heavy chains of filial piety.
he has done wrong. and this is a second chance to get things right.

Why is that 9 minute boat scene the literal best?
That’s not my question, because that answer is very obvious (it just is).
But there are so many things happening for those 9 minutes and they’re all happening at once and it’s _a_lot_. Almost everything those two say feels like there’s an iceberg of stuff happening underneath it. It’s like a scene from an Ingmar Bergman movie or something. Their dynamic is so addicting, it really swaps out the so-called-perfect two-dimensional couple ‘ideal’ so many of us have been force fed all our lives and replaces it with something that’s actually interesting. And awesome. And badass. GGDD make me believe it’s possible for couples to be badass. Thank you GGDD.
My question is! I wanted to ask if you would ever do a hypothetical clowning breakdown of the boat scene? Like a beat for beat analytic take. What their motivations might actually be despite what they’re saying. What’s being resolved. What’s being poked at. Etc etc etc. Because the constant switching from passive aggressiveness to sincerity to jabbing to performativeness is so fast and so fascinating I would just really like to read your deeper take on all of it.
But that also sounds like a lot of work because that scene is _a_lot. So I understand if your answer is “no, let’s all just enjoy it.”
Thank you again for all you do!
This is in reference to a previous post.
Fake, fan fiction, CPN.
I don't think there's much subtext to a lot of what they're saying. Mostly they are just killing time with a bit of lighthearted banter. I can give a bit of a breakdown of a few of the things they’re talking about that people might not know some of the background on, though.
At the beginning where GG is about to say something to DD but stops himself, and then tells DD it’s something he says to Jiang Cheng a lot - what he’s talking about there is the phrase "Hard as a dead duck’s beak” to describe someone who is stubborn. It’s a phrase he won’t use on DD because GG is really superstitious and he won’t say anything involving death or injury around DD, who is involved in dangerous sports (racing, skateboarding).
Then they talk about GG ‘not being there yesterday’. That’s because he was also filming Joy of Life at the time, and that schedule conflicted a bit with The Untamed, so he had to do a bit of juggling during filming to be available for both dramas. DD makes fun of GG, but uses stronger language than entirely necessary, which is just so funny. They are so unhinged with each other.
(And I see this part as a bit similar to the ‘trash boyfriend’ bickering in a different BTS video, where GG uses stronger language than entirely necessary to dig at DD a bit about LWJ’s lack of support for WWX earlier in the story. They tend to use exaggerated language with each other, which is a further sign of the closeness of their relationship. They couldn't get away with being so harsh with people they aren't very close to.)
Then they start a bit of a pissing contest over who can be the most apologetic/exaggeratedly gracious, which is hilarious.
After that it’s all pretty straightforward for a long time. Then comes one of my favorite moments, when GG pounds his hand on his heart and pleads with DD, “Wang Yibo, ask yourself, are you human?” For some interesting and hilarious insight on that I recommend reading this series of posts by @potteresque-ire.
They end up in the bottom of the boat together, and GG asks DD if he needs a tissue. This is likely a HILARIOUS reference to the fact that they look like they're squatting to take a shit.
Then they start talking about dancing, and there are a couple of things that stood out to me about this:
DD shows some restraint and patience here and doesn't openly mock GG for some of the uninformed things he says about dance moves, etc. He really lets GG off the hook a lot more than he does other people.
GG asks DD if he wears knee pads, which DD scoffs at. But later, during SDOC3 we see DD wearing knee pads a lot. LOL. Fans speculate that's GG's influence.
Then they start talking about who has more experience, and this is when DD really starts with his soft baby talk voice at GG, which totally kills me every time.
Then DD brings up GG's skill as a designer, and GG scoffs at it and says it's useless. DD says, "You can design your own logo." Little did they know at the time, but GG ends up doing exactly that, and it's a really beautiful one.
Tumblr media
I won't even get into detail on the things GG is believed by fans to have designed for DD, but yeah, his skill didn't prove useless at all.

Then they bicker a bit about pretty straightforward stuff. They talk about the lines they have to memorize at one point. There's actually a photo circulating around somewhere, comparing the script DD's voiceover actor had vs the one GG's voiceover actor had. DD's was a few pages, while GG's was a thick booklet. LOL. I wish I could find that picture for you but I guess I didn't save it.

All the Things We’ll Leave Behind: ch 29, pt 12
The end of the chapter~
CW: more solid threesome talk
Previously
~
For a moment, the call went quiet and wwx was worried he had gone too far, said something that had actually offended the other alpha.
“wwx,” jzxuan finally said, tone tired but holding a thread of amusement that had wwx relaxing again. He didn’t actually want to piss his mate’s friend off—he was just so fun to poke at! How could he possibly resist!?
“Yes, jzxuan?”
“You’re annoying.”
wwx laughed. “So are you,” he said, letting his eyes flutter closed for a moment. Images, barely there pictures, of what that ‘maybe’ could lead to shuffling through his head. lwj mean and pouting, sandwiched between himself and jzxuan. jzxuan taking them both at once—in two holes, in one. Fuck. It was a good thing he’d plastered himself in scent suppressors. “Maybe,” he added as his eyes slid open again, and he reached for the doorknob, “I’ll let you join us, if that’s what you want to ask for.”
“I—” jzxuan started to say, his voice an adorably high squeak.
Fuck, wwx could understand why his mate had ended up having that brief fantasy of topping the little alpha. “Think on it—for as long as you want. I have to get into this meeting before all my smiling and laughing and gaping because of you stresses my employees out too much.”
“Okay…” jzxuan said softly, contemplatively. Good. This wasn’t the kind of thing he should jump into without any thought.
“A-Zhan has to agree too, obviously,” he added. He thought his mate would be into it, but who knew. The two young men had become fast friends, and maybe he wasn’t willing to risk that just for a night—or two… or more—of fun. “Good night, A-Xuan,” he said, lacing his voice with syrupy sweet promises and hoping for one more amusing reaction out of the other alpha.
“Wha—” The younger man cut off and wwx could just barely see the glare he was giving his living room through the screen—or maybe his mate. jzxuan seemed the type to glare at lwj for wwx’s misdoings. “Good night, Xian-gege,” he replied, his voice purring and harassing and then wwx was left, staring into the abyss as the call ended.
“If you don’t close your mouth, a bug will fly into it.”
wwx’s jaw snapped closed. He glared at his assistant. Jerk. He was in the middle of having a crisis over getting scratched by an adorable kitten! Couldn’t the man see how distressed his boss was!?
"Fucking hell," he thought as his assistant practically pushed him into the kitchen, "that’s gonna be fun."

had a very stressful morning so i was trying to think about something dumb and fun to distract myself, hit upon ‘there are jin guangyao&su she to wei wuxian&wen ning parallels... what if you swapped the Loyal Dudes in those equations’ and let me tell you I am now entertained as FUCK thinking about it
jin guangyao and wen ning is honestly fascinating because i’ll be honest: wen ning is a sweet, sweet boy but he also has, canonically massive pent-up reserves of Going Apeshit buried deep inside him and doesn’t... really seem to have... much of a moral compass? I mean, you could assume he does, but the way he primarily seems to assess the world is simply through ‘there are people I’m loyal to (my family, Best Friend Who Was Nice To Me And Whom I’d Die For) and I’ll do anything for them. that’s it’. he doesn’t seem to have a particular drive to be violent unless that gets unlocked via fierce corpse beast mode, or any desire to be cruel--but he doesn’t seem to really balk at anything, either. I’m not saying he’d ever be The Darkest, but I am intrigued at the idea of a wen ning who’s loyal to--instead of wei ‘my reaction to you saying I would kill and/or die for you is ‘it’s finnnnne lol let’s just hang out’ wuxian--jin ‘my reaction is ‘perfect! could you also pick up my dry cleaning?’ guangyao. I’m getting this mental picture of them initially meeting in Nightless City, and then JGY stashing him in hiding after the Wens are taken down. wen ning + xue yang odd friendship? wen ning going more the doctor route, since he wouldn’t be a fierce corpse? the possibilities are wild and i want to see them explored
wei wuxian and su she is making me lose it just thinking about them because they would be. A Lot. here’s why. I can actually see them becoming friends easily under the right circumstances--alter things slightly so wwx talks to him instead of LWJ after saving him from the WB abyss, or substitute some event where wwx speaks up/shows him sympathy after some other event. sms being kind of a bitch is fine, wwx is used to that with jiang cheng. they even--going off sms picking up things like teleportation and the HH curse, and wwx’s everything--might share some interests in weird and neglected areas of cultivation. they could really hit it off!
there’s uhhh just one problem and it’s that wwx being wwx, his adhd ass is going to fully forget about sms after he’s been out of his sight for 15 minutes. and we’re not dealing with ‘it’s fine wei-gongzi, no hard feelings! no not about me dying either it’s cool :)’ wen ning, we’re dealing with su ‘takes literally everything personally, hates being forgotten’ she. buuuut he does get an A grade in loyalty. so we have someone who does care about wwx and feels indebted to him, but is pissed as all hell at him. (jiang cheng, you have competition). whether or not sms still commits his obligatory Sin of Cowardice is ymmv, I think--moving over that, I’m imagining a scenario where sms winds up dying right at the end of Sunshot, and wwx happens to come along juuuust a bit too late and feels guilty enough about that + the fact he kind of forgot about this guy until now, to try resurrecting him.
but I think that even that wouldn’t really like... fix the relationship. wen ning was dealing with kind of a bad hand, cultivation-wise, before his corpsification, and is generally the kind of person who rolls with the punches a bit more--he lost stuff when he died and came back, but it was overall a little more chill for him. sms actually had pretty strong cultivation, which he’d lose as a fierce corpse, and is. as previously mentioned. really bad at handling things.
I have no idea what the Yiling Laozu&Ghost--whoever-the-fuck-that-dude-in-white-is-that-turns-up-to-yell-at-the-Yiling-Laozu-sometimes--relationship would look like, for the most part, I’m just massively entertained by the idea of wwx coming back to life in present day, tootling on a flute, and sms shows up and just decks him before leaving
(then coming back ten minutes later to actually save his life, and yell at him for ‘pretending to be dead’ for sixteen years)
