Goonion's Ghoul (Part 3) [dp x dc]
(A/N we switching the official name of the goonion to The First Universal Henchmans' Union. Just makes sense, thank y'all for the advice)
(Parts 1 & 2: here) (Part 4: here)
"Before we begin, I'd just like to clarify a few things. Mainly, can I ask for your preferred name?"
"Is that a joke?"
"Well, I figured it would professional to come out and call you Mr. Cobblepot, but seeing as we're talking about a... certain aspect of your enterprises, I wasn't sure you wanted your legal name in the records. The Union takes confidentiality very seriously."
Oswald Cobblepot looked down at the scrawny boy in front of him. This was the guy that had Eddie shaking in his boots? He tapped the ashes off his cigarette into the ashtray, and scoffed. "Doesn't matter to me, as long as you remember who you're talking to before you open your mouth."
"Of course! As you wish, Mr. Penguin."
There it was. That smile just a bit too wide, just like Riddler had said. Oswald Cobblepot wasn't an amateur, he wouldn't let something like that throw him off balance. "Alright, kid, lets cut to the chase. Whats this all about a Union?"
"Oh, Mr. Penguin, I had thought you heard! The First Universal Henchmans' Union is a recently formed collective of working class freelance goons, henchmen, and grunts of all different colors."
"Hweh! And what do I care if a bunch of simpletons wanna have a party together?"
The kid's head tilted, a sickening crack! ringing through the room. Just for a second, its eyes seemed to glow.
When you deal with bats for so long, little things like that don't sway you.
"If they're so little to you in your mind, then surely anything they might ask of you shouldn't be that hard to swallow?"
The temperature in the room seemed to drop, as the thing's face tried to imitate inquisitiveness.
Good. The Penguin likes it cold.
"You can toss away the whole intimidation shtick, boy. I didn't get to be where I was by bending over to every ignoramus who thinks they can get me to do what they want."
When you deal with Bats for so long, you start to pay more attention to little expressions. The way the shadows suddenly fall onto the boy's blue-eyed, black haired face as he tilts his head downward makes The Penguin's flinch, just for a moment.
"I promise you sir, the Goonion is a very real, and very serious organization."
Cobblepot sneers, cigarette holder angling upward, as he taps his umbrella on the ground. "I pay my people well. My lounge is up to code, too. You don't have a damn thing on me, and here you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes. Well listen here, boy, you don't run an operation like this in Gotham without knowing fear. Fear is watching every shadow, looking for the pin pricks of light. Fear is the cracking of bones in the room over as you know the jig's up. Fear is watching Gotham's shadow spawn appear from the darkness, promising the only thing he wont do is kill you. You're way out of your league if you think I'll bend to such a cheap trick."
When you deal with Bats for so long, you learn to keep your eyes open. You keep track of exits, you look for little disturbances, keep your ears ready for even the softest sound.
You pay attention to that little voice that says you're being watched.
"Mr Penguin, do I need to remind you just who these 'simpletons' are? They're the men who carry your goods to and from your lounge. They're the ones who rig up the Riddler's bombs, traffic weapons in and out of the city. What happens when deals go south, when plans are canceled partway though?"
When you deal with Bats for so long, you watch the shadows. They practically live in them, entering and exiting like they're made from the stuff. Anything that might give away their position.
The shadows are dancing. Pulsing with something even darker than Gotham. He swears he can hear the sound of a bat gently hitting someone's hand. Distant laughter, not natural, almost forced.
"You know, Mr. Penguin, The Joker is easily one of our worst offenders. One of his more interesting complaints is the lack of security in regards to chemicals. See, he doesn't really care much if there's missing inventory, or what happens after his plan, as long as there's enough for what he needs." A vial flutters between its fingers, eyes almost bored as a forked tongue slides between sharpened teeth. "I wonder, where does it all go?
Eyes, green as emerald and as bright as the sun burn into Ozwald's. A grin stretches wider, wider, quite literally from one ear to the next filled with jagged teeth. "Do you want to find out?"
...~☆~...
"...My... smoking habits."
"Yeah, honestly. Its like you said. Most of your stuff is up to board, and your workers are fairly happy. Its mainly just an issue for henches with asthma, though secondhand smoke isn't something most people enjoy."
"You did all that over my cigarettes?!"
"its fairly understood that the Iceberg Lounge is not a smoke-free area, so you can do as you please there, but when it comes to abandoned warehouses or other places of business, we ask you please refrain from smoking."
"I can't believe this."
"For what its worth, the goons understand its part of your whole outfit, and are willing to compromise. We have a list of alternatives that visibly resemble a lit cigarette, and will fit in your holder, but wont actually release any smoke..."

also! if you don't mind, could you tell me a bit abt your religion/who you worship? the only reason i would ask is bc i saw your prayer thing for jellie and had never heard of that god/goddess before (i believe she's from Egyptian mythology? idk) anyway if you dont feel like sharing, no worries :D
-🐛
HEY BUG ANON!!! :D thank u for the well-wishes, i really appreciate them a ton!! I hope the college searching goes better, it sounds real rough on your end :((( also AKSNAKDNKS HAPPY VALENTINES GAY....... THATS SO FUCKJNG FUNNY HELP MEEEE if someone said that to me while out and about i would be ecstatic truly KSNDWKNDKSNSJSNS
Sure, i can try and give a quick crash course in kemeticism if you're curious!! (As a general disclaimer to any OTHER kemetics who might see this, im gonna attempt to keep this very layman-friendly, so if i skip nuances in favour of simplifying stuff thats why. I'll leave some resources at the end of this post!)
Uhhh okay so kemetic paganism is a neopagan religion based off of ancient egyptian religious practices. There are a lot of different ways folks practice kemeticism-- such as reconstructionism (or recon; aka strict adherence to the rituals of antiquity), revivalism (adapting ancient rituals and practices into the modern era), and eclecticism (for the sake of simplicity, we'll say this is essentially taking several different practices from many other religions and combining them all into one personal practice). I fall somewhere between revivalism and eclecticism, mostly by virtue of also working with Hermes and Loki, though my practice is primarily kemetic in nature.
In short, i worship the ancient egyptian gods-- my patron, or a god whom i am particularly close with and mainly dedicated to, is the cat goddess Bast (also known as Bastet, although thats actually a mistranslation of her name). Bast is known by many epithets, but one translation of her name is "Lady of the Ointments"; its written with the hieroglyphs for a bas-jar (aka a perfume/ointment jar) and a loaf of bread (the "t" sound). She's a solar goddess associated with protection, is an Iryt Ra (Eye of Ra; Goddesses who protect and nurture the sun god Ra), and like many (and i do mean many) other kemetic gods, also holds ties to fertility. In the past she was depicted as a lioness, then later became associated with the domestic housecat, where she picked up additional ties to motherhood; she also began picking up attributes from close association with Het-hert (Hathor), which resulted in further associations with music, dancing, and the arts. She's often depicted holding an aegis (a collar-like necklace with a deity's head on it) and a sistrum (a musical rattle).
She's a very fierce but loving goddess whom i have been worshipping for the last 11 years :] i also work with other kemetic deities-- of my "personal quintet," as i like to joke, i work with Djehuty (Thoth), Sekhmet, and occasionally Sutekh (Set/Seth) and Heru-wer (Horus the Elder). And, ofc, from outside the kemetic pantheon i work with Hermes and Loki, who happens to be my other patron!!
Im very glad that my formal petition to Bast for Jellie has brought those who have seen it some much-needed comfort, and its nice that its also made some people curious about kemeticism!! If youve got any specific questions, feel free to drop me a line off anon or in dms! :] im always happy to chat!!

Thanks for the tag @angelofthemornings!
Rules: Make a new post and post your latest/most recent line from your WIP and tag as many people as there are words.
...Unfortunately, I have no active WIP at the moment. Just a lot of PIP...Practice in Progress. I'm doing a lot of very small things, mostly for pleasure, with no particular end goal in mind.
But there's no rule saying I can't share old WIPs, writing-adjacent. Besides, I've seen the art equivalent of this particular tag going around --and these days I don't distinguish much between art and writing and whatever else.
So!
For my big WIP late last year/earlier this year, I taught myself how to book-bind. Which it turns out I really, really like to do (a surprise to me --until now, I've never had any success sewing anything).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two little hardcover sketchbooks are my favorites, so far.
This was part of a giant, composite project: I was writing a book (not a novel, but a book-length written work), with the intention of binding a few copies of it myself, each copy unique (different covers, different embellishments in the formatting, different dedication at the opening of the book, etc., as suited to particular individuals). I was also making small ink drawings for the 'chapter' illustrations. The goal was to give the finished books as gifts.
...This was very time-and-energy-consuming. xD I got roughly 80,000 words written, 50 illustrations thumbnailed, and you can see I was making good progress on the binding bit (my first attempts were either very flimsy, or very stiff...clearly home-made. These sketchbooks may not be beautiful, but they're just as sturdy as any store-bought journal, and the pages turn perfectly)!
It was close, but it never did get finished. Ah well. I'm proud of myself for learning new things, and for getting very far on a very ambitious idea (and for being insane enough to try in the first place, fueled by love and homosexual audacity). And I can take what I've learned with me into future projects.
I always want to tag all my mutuals, so consider yourself tagged, but just scrolling through my recent notes: @epaily @celebkiriedhel @a-case-for-wonder @lollo12589 @ozbian @criticalrolo-main @sonicspocketwrench1 @pawthorn @maydaymadier @jaffefuneralhomes @medinaquirin @velocirabbit @archfeyfrumpkin @bunchofasholes @ora-cool @quill-of-thoth @shadyorc and...yeah, anyone xD

Some updates about the "House of the Sun" project
The main cast is almost completed. There are still some other gods I need to draw first, but I've already thought of how I will present you the first posts.
I've decided to split the narration in two part:
"Young Horus", will be the fanon part related to the story of Horus the Young into adulthood. I haven't decided how I'm going to present this part yet, if it's through a visual novel or a comic, since it's the most complicated part. It might take some time before I post something about it.
"Thoth's Library", a series of mini comics and Trivia dedicated to the Egyptian Mythology, through the POV of Thoth. Easiest, the funniest part of the project, will probably be the first thing that will pop up here.

Hello! My name is Tn’ak.
I have recently acquired some of your truly fascinating human technology. It took a lot of time and a lot of tinkering to figure out how this intricate human technology functions, and I was quite difficult to install a router, but I am now on the ‘world wide web’! I figure I may use this piece of technology to educate the humans as to how my species works seeing how the vast majority of you have no idea that we even exist! Oh well.
I am a nightmare demon, a creature who feeds on the nightmares of humans, specifically the fear those nightmares induce. My physiology goes against all natural law due to my species origins in the supernatural, so do keep in mind that there are many things that unfortunately just don’t have answers. I do really wish I had those answers but I only know almost everything. My abilities are really hit or miss. Ooo ‘emojis’. I don’t know what most of these are supposed to be but I guess this 💀 is the most accurate depiction of my face. Or maybe 🐦, although there’s too much skin on it and it’s not even a corvid. Wait I’m getting off track, where was I?
Edit: I have figured out how ‘links’ work. I will create a section on this post dedicated to using these links to organise this account.

Remember the days of disclaimers on fan fic posts? We have AO3/OTW (and their legal team) to thank for not needing those anymore, but I think we should replace disclaimers with dedications.
To gods.
Specifically storytelling gods.
Like Anansi. Or Loki. Or Coyote. Or any storytelling deity like Thoth.
It doesn't all have to be liquid blood and death, Mr. Wednesday. Sometimes it can be the blood, sweat, and tears of a writer or an artist. The death of a plot bunny. Sacrificing your favorite scene to the implacable will of a beta reader. Prayer comes in many forms including the kudos button. It is called divine inspiration after all. A little thanks is warranted.
We should dedicate our stories and art to the gods.

Levihan in "Interesting things about Falcon mythology"
So, I was rereading SnK for the sake of my chap 136 analysis, and now I think my brain has stopped working lmao. I'm 99,99% sure this is kinda CRAZY. But it's interesting. (And idk if someone already noticed this too or similar myths, but if so send it to me, please!)
In Egypt Mythology:
The right eye of a falcon represents the sun and the left eye is the moon. This for God Horus. (Also associated with God Ra)
Tumblr media
"The right eye of Horus was the sun or morning star, representing power and quintessence, and the left eye was the moon or evening star, representing healing. "
"Quintessence is the fifth and highest element in ancient and medieval philosophy that permeates all nature and is the substance composing the celestial bodies. The essence of a thing in its purest and most concentrated form."
Seth is a God whose form is made of all kinds of animals.
In a fight with Seth, Horus’s left eye was damaged—this being a mythical explanation of the moon’s phases— and was healed by the God Thoth.
Levi has only his left eye (moon). Hange had only right eye (sun). Zeke had the Beast Titan (titan with power of turning into all kinds animals)
Horus, then, would be both Levi and Hange. Seth is Zeke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thoth (who cured Horus after fighting Seth) is also the god of the moon, of reckoning, of learning, and of writing. (Yams lol)
Chapter 125 is named "Sunset".
You know what the Sunset is?! An "eternal" moment in between, where (if you pay attention) Sun and Moon can be seen shining together before the darkness takes over.
In Sunset, we have finally Hange and Levi back after 84 years disappeared!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But wait, they disappeared in chapter 115, right? And so, up to chapter 125, it took 10 months to bring them back. (Is that a "birth of something?")
In chapter 126, together, Levi and Hange convince Pieck and Magath to help to stop the Rumbling.
We could say Horus has both eyes back...
SnK volume 32 has its 1st and 4th chapters named "Night of the End" and "The Dawn of Humanity."
In the cover, Levi (moon) is not present, but we have the "in-between" moment. The Sunset* again.
And Hange (sun) literally looks like the sun in the center, as all the weapons make "sunbeams" around her.
Tumblr media
During the 04 chapters of this volume Levi barely appears. Which also explains he not visually in the cover.
Hange, however, is a pillar for plans, reunions and the preparations for humanity's last hope. (Like a real Sun...)
In chap. 127 (Night of the End), Hange "mediates" everyone's nerves. Enemies become allies.
In chap. 130 (The Dawn of Humanity) Hanji, defines that their team is going to try stop Eren. We have literally the sunrise there.
Tumblr media
In Chapter 132, Wings of Freedom, we have the undeniable eyes and SC wings parallels. (You must have already seen them around in other posts...)
Levi says to "Devote your heart" using his hand over Hange's heart. (Like he is dedicating his to her).
Tumblr media
Hange saves everyone while BURNING BRIGHT AND HOT LIKE THE SUN, MTFCK!
Tumblr media
God Thoth, who cured Horus left eye after he fought Seth, "weighed the hearts of the deceased at their judgment and reported the result to the presiding god, Osiris, and his fellow judges."
Hange died using her wings to fight for freedom, and met her fallen comrades. Erwin says she did well. Her friends help her. So her "judgment/sentence" is not condemnation/punishment.
From chapter 133 to 138, Levi gave his everything to protect and save people. And the main guide was Hange's last idea - killing Zeke might stop the Rumbling.
Falco comes from "Falcon".
The "falcon" (which points to God Horus in this text) saves Levi and everyone in chapter 135, "Battle of Heaven and Earth".
Despite being completely ripped apart, Levi is still fighting to restore the "human world" by stopping the Titans and the Rumbling.
The Eye of Horus, in ancient Egypt, is a symbol representing protection, health, and restoration.
Levi is the only eye left.
Me now: *crying in a corner*

Oddworld: Role Switch au
So a couple of weeks(?) ago, @oddest-worlds posted an idea for an au where mudokons were an evil cultist species-supremacist power because of the mudokon moon incident and the glukkons were the enslaved natives. I really wanted to pitch in ideas/headcanons, but was busy with coursework at the time.
Fortunately, I just finished my project and now have more free time so I got to writing some stuff.... a lot of stuff... mainly just some points on the main trio of eusocial races (Mudokons, Glukkons and Sligs) and their role in the AU. So strap in!
(Fyi if you have/had other ideas that contradict the headcanons bellow, feel free to ignore those. Or pitch in some of your own ideas, I’d love to hear them!)
Glukkons
Were once a spiritually oriented race who practiced black magic, occultism and alchemy and were allies of the Mudokons thousands of years ago
When the mudokons declared themselves as the supreme race because of the mudokon moon, they were, understandably, upset and concerned
Fearing their once allies were drifting further away into cultist, species-supremacist behaviour, the glukkons set out to disprove the mudokons declaration of supremacy though their alchemical arts and unify their species once more
It’s said that some glukkon alchemists were successful in finding the answers they seeked out, but what those answers were have long since been lost to time
Now becoming more industrialised and realising the glukkons were a possible threat due to their alchemical powers, the mudokons orchestrated a war against them, nearly wiping the glukkons out in the process before thier surrender
After the war, disillusioned, outnumbered and on the brink of extinction, the glukkons began working for the mudokons, who belittled, oppressed and eventually enslaved them
Now most glukkons are born into subservience to the Mudokons, oblivious to their spiritual past, true history and culture
Still native glukkon tribes out in the wild in hiding from the mudokon empire
I mentioned this before, but I personally imagined the glukkons of this timeline walking on thier legs, which are still somewhat short, and retained thier long arms. Basically, they have the same body type to gibbons and similar long armed apes
Because they walk with their legs and not on their arms, most glukkons stand at almost half their canon height, roughly around 4 or 5 feet tall or so
In industrial captivity, most glukkons tend to have a grey or pale skintone like the glukkons we see in soulstorm
Native Glukkons born outside of captivity are much more diverse in skin colour, with their base colours ranging from brown to purple, red, pink or green etc
Along with This, they have the ability to change their skin colour like octopuses (which makes sense given their closest relatives evolutionarily are the oktigi and other octopus/cephalopod-like creatures)
Notably, they flash different colours across their face and skin when feeling strong emotions like sadness, anger, excitement etc. Similar to the mudokons in Abe’s Exoddus
Glukkons from certain tribes also have bioluminescent markings and patterns on their skin that are visible in the dark. Though, this trait is not as common
Using this colour changing ability, some glukkons are able to copy the colours and even textures of their environment and become one with the scenery. Essentially making themselves invisible. Of corse, this particular aspect of colour changing usually doesn’t come as naturally or involuntary to glukkons as the emotional-based changes. In most cases it takes years of training to master the art of invisibility
Much like the Mudokons in canon, industrial-born Glukks are born into captivity from a mother queen and their eggs are shipped off to be sold into slavery
Baby or young slave glukkons are raised alongside their siblings and cousins over a mudokon master and are usually kept together as something akin to a demented orphanage where youngling glukks are sent to work as soon as they can pick up a rag and bucket
@oddest-worlds, You described the mudokons as being cult like. I personally imagined this would ya know aside from the moon worshiping mudokon supremacy stuff manifest itself most in the way they control thier glukkon slaves
Glukkons in slavery, much like people born into cults, are indoctrinated at a young age to believe their mudokon masters are perfect, all knowing and benevolent beings, that the outside world beyond the factories is a savage, unforgiving wasteland where outsiders will try to lead them astray, and that they are better off and safer dedicating their lives to loyaly serving the mudokons
Glukks who challenge these beliefs, defy their mudokon masters or try and escape to the outside are often severely punished. Either from being removed from their glukkon group, being held in a cell for hours or days where they are interrogated and for their “crimes” or getting severe beatings.
Native free glukkons have a similar tribal society structure as the native mudokons in canon, with each tribe having their own distinctive culture
As said before, they practice the occult, black magic and, most prominently among different glukkon tribes, alchemy
As well as living in tune with nature, Glukkon alchemists often practice the art of transmutation, turning one type material or substance into another, and joining certain substances and/or materials together. Which they do in order to better understand the natural world around them
Nowadays, though, native glukkon civilisation is far from what it once was millennia ago
Thanks to the mudokons and other industrial societies either enslaving or killing off their numbers as well as building over their sacred lands, most native glukkon’s main priority is to hide away from the rest of society and to protect what little of their culture and traditions still remain
From my research I learned the practice of alchemy (or at least the traditional western version of it) could be traced back to Egypt and Thoth, the god of arts and sciences, so I thought it would make sense if at least some individual native glukkon tribes culture and overall aesthetic would be loosely based on the ancient Egyptians as a callback to this, with some small echos of the architecture we see with the glukkon aesthetics of the canon timeline plus the more native looking early concept art of glukkons
Also while researching alchemy I noticed one key aspect of it involved change and transmutation, I.e. turning base metals like lead into noble metals like gold. I thought about how this could also connect to their colour changing. Maybe some native glukkons believe the colour changing to be a glukkons most primal form of transmutation. And view the ability to blend in with the environment as a way of being one with nature, both in the figurative and literal sense. Or something else along those lines
In industrial propaganda, native glukkons are painted as savage barbarians and alchemists as swindlers and charlatans that lead gullable slave glukkons astray, filling their heads with doubt, or with the promise of bestowing riches and immortality for a price
Enslaved glukkon’s clothes tend to consist of whatever textiles they can get their hands on in the factories and what little the strict dress code implemented by their mudokon masters will allow
The main item of clothing worn by most glukk scrubs is a shoddily cobbled together shirt and overalls. Sorta like an even shabbier version of the basic glukkon pud uniform in munchs oddysee
Like many things, native or liberated glukkons tend to have a lot more freedom when it comes to what they wear
The more traditional fashions often worn by glukkon alchemists include long, loose fitting robes, sometimes with these thick ribbed shoulder pads. Pretty much the same as outfit worn by glukkons in the very early concept art back when they were still called “Oldger” or “Ociti”
Mudokons
A once spiritual race that possessed psychic powers and were allies to the Glukkons thousands of years ago
When the shape of a Mudokon pawprint appeared on one of Oddworld’s moons, some mudokons took this as a sign from the gods that they were the chosen race
Blinded by their self imposed delusions of grandeur, the first believers of the mudokon moon sign set out to prove the mudokon race’s superiority over all other races of Oddworld
The moon believers did this by recruiting more mudokon members into their tribe, slowly converting the many tribes into one unified empire, increased consumption of the planets resources and began to isolate themselves from the rest of Oddworld
Building massive towers that reached the skies, they began to spend most of thier time indoors, only looking up at the night sky to see thier sacred moon, the symbolic reminder of thier divinity over Oddworld
Gradually abandoned thier spiritual ways in favour of a more industrialised way of life. Only a few powerful figures within the Mudokon empire still use their psychic abilities such as possession
Growing more paranoid that their Glukkon allies and thier powers of alchemy would prove to be a threat to their rising power, the mudokons orchestrated a war against the glukkon tribes, nearly wiping them out in the process
After the war, the mudokon empire gave the queens of the last remaining glukkon tribes an ultimatum: give away thier children to the empire where they would be “employed”, “sheltered” and “safe”, or let them be born into a “primitive” tribal wasteland at the brink of extinction
The mudokons were able to enslave their once Glukkon allies and quickly rose to become the most powerful, and power hungry, civilisation in all of Oddworld
In terms of architecture and aesthetic, I figured many of those motifs from their spiritual/tribal past would subtly carry over to their current society, I’ll be it more metallic and industrialised. Like larger, dystopian dieselpunk versions of the huts, buildings and structures we see in Monsaic Lines and other native mudokon locations
The buildings they live and work in are also incredibly tall, with some structures in their urban cities reaching above the clouds (basically the opposite of the canon glukkons subterranean cities)
The Mudokons are the main industrial society with a stronghold over the planet
Having essentially brainwashed both thier mudokon citizens and glukkon slaves, the mudokon empire is singularly concerned with proving their dominion over the planet oddworld. with no reguard for the native creatures and cultures that inhabit it
Mudokon society is extremely dedicated to the idea they are the best civilisation in all of Oddworld
As far as they’re concerned, their empire is the supreme civilisation, unparalleled in architecture, politics, philosophy, military and art
And they are dead set on proving thier superiority to the other races of Oddworld, no matter the cost
Any historical records that makes mudokons civilisation and society look bad or less then perfect are either deeply hidden away or destroyed. Through this constant revisionism as erasure, their true history has been long forgotten
Only consistent part of their history is the mudokon moon, which they hold as a sacred symbol and a reminder of their power as the “chosen race”
Now, the sight of the mudokon moon is rare for any industrial borns due to the sky being covered by air pollution from the mudokons buildings and factories
Young mudokons are born as eggs by their respective queen and sent to be raised by a foster mudokon worker and, if they’re rich or well off, their many glukkon slaves
As I said before in the glukkon bit, the way glukkons are taught how to view the world is very similar to real life cult indoctrination and brainwashing. Young mudokons get a similar treatment in terms of their education
At an early age, mudokons are taught by their elders that oddworld belongs to the strong such as them, that the other races that cannot compare to the mudokons, And that all mudokons which as them are perfect and destined for greatness. (Provided they work hard and follow the rules of the empire...)
For a mudokon, lacking this sense of superiority over other races and drive to prove themselves as exceptional is frowned upon in thier society, and such mudokons are often either outcasted or placed in the lower ranking job roles
Like the glukkon workers in canon, adult mudokon workers are often employed as powerful bosses and rulers in the mudokon industries of food production, science, politics and/or religion to name a few
While some individual mudokon masters value mollah and material gain over other things, mudokon society as a whole isn’t quite as obsessed with mollah the same way glukkon society in canon is. They do hold monetary wealth and riches in high regard, of corse, but mostly as one of many status symbols to prove their superiority over others
Due to their belief of being the superior race, some mudokons are known to be extremely arrogant and self centred, to the point they’re often compeating with one another over who is the better mud
In terms of physical appearance, I imagine mudokons having a lot more angular features, like more talon like claws on their hands/feet to evoke a bird of prey
While mudokons are still omnivores, teeth such as their canids are more pronounced due to consuming more meat products such as scrab, Meech, slig and elum meats
I also feel like the slight uncanny-valley elements the mudokons already have should be subtly accentuated in the switch designs for creep factor and everything
unlike muds of canon, muds of the switch au tend to be on the lean, average and/or slightly cubby side rather then underweight and slightly bony in terms of their weight. Mostly down to having relatively better diet and quality of life, at least compared to their canon counterparts.
Mudokons also have way more feathers on their heads! Though, due to the airborne pollution of their industrial lifestyle, feather growth is mainly restricted to their head and face
don’t tend to grow as many feathers on other parts of their bodies like arms, legs etc
On top of this, as mudokons tend to live in colossal tower-like structures, they’ve evolved adaptations to life in higher attitudes such as naturally taking shorter breaths.
One popular form of dress for most moderate or high ranking mudokons consists of a shirt garment with a v-shaped neck (kinda like a Dashiki) a medium length skirt and long ornate robes or feathered cloak. Think more fancy versions of the native clothes worn by the mud shamins in canon.
How intricate, layered, extravagant and/or customised etc these clothes are depends on how high the individual mud wearing them is on the power/wealth hierarchy. Kinda like the wealth hierarchy with canon glukkons. Most lower class muds tend to look closer to the muds we see in canon with a short loincloth-like skirt and simple vest.
While the majority of mudokon society tends to be more industrialised, there are certain elite and powerful groups within the mudokon empire that still practice their spiritual psychic powers
One example of such a group is an elite task force of mudokon agents specifically trained to hone their psychokinetic abilities.
Fed on an exclusive diet of mind altering spooce shrubs, they are granted powerful and dangerous abilities (provided they don’t die from spooce overdose first). Such as the power to possess the minds and bodies of other beings
They are employed as black ops-like operatives by the mudokon empire to manipulate the affairs of other Oddworld nations and races behind the scenes with their powers of possession, as assassins to take out highly dangerous targets from afar with death via red ring explosion or possession induced head explosion, or as bodyguards to protect highly powerful and elite clients, usually mudokon queens. Essentially taking on a similar role to the Glocktigi in canon
Sligs
Race of amphibious/semi-aquatic swamp dwellers
Society not as complex or “advanced” as others like the glukkons or mudokons, technology wise
Somewhat nomadic as they tend to move around from place to place in colonies, though their preferd environments are wetlands, marshes, swamps, lakes and bogs
Were never enslaved by Glukkons, Mudokons or any other societies of mudos for that matter. probably since Sligs are seen as useless and impractical for such tasks anyway. I mean, what kind of peanut-headed chumps would have a legless species who can’t use their hands do their dirty work for them?! lol!
While functional on land, they’re a bit more adapted for life in water, with webbed hands and seal-like tails for swimming as well as gills in their mouths for breathing underwater
Walk with their hands when on land (similar to pantsless sligs in canon but slightly less awkward)
Use the highly dexterous tentacles on their faces to pick up objects and use tools while they walk or swim
Covering themselves up with dirt, moss, mud etc is a big part of their culture. Not because they think they’re ugly like the Sligs in canon, but because it provides good camouflage from larger creatures and predators wanting to eat them
If a Slig is spotted or about to be caught by anything that would want them as food, they can use their arms to leap away from their attacker
In terms of actual clothing, they don’t wear much aside from a covering that wraps around the middle section between their abdomen and their tail mostly so their butts don’t get cold when they go up on land. These coverings are usually either made of soft reeds weaved together, a leaf held together by a stick going through both ends or whatever they can get their tentacles on in thier surrounding environment
Even without fancy covering or camo, Sligs are pretty diverse when it comes to their appearance
Depending on the environment, their skin tone can range from light green to yellow, dark green, blueish-green, teal, brown or black to name a few
Some Sligs also have tiger like stripes similar to the ones on big bro Sligs in canon
And, of corse, there’s albino Sligs. How they’re treated tends to vary form colony to colony
Some outcast or even kill albinos, fearing their bright colour could attract predators
Other colonies are a lot more accepting of albinos, though they tend to be more protective of them due to, again, being more easy targets for predators
Most albino Sligs either take extra care to cover themselves with as camouflage as possible to hide their bright skin, or stay under the water for most of their lives, rarely ever venturing up to the surface world
Queens are also never seen on dry land, as their birthing process is significantly less painful underwater
While none of the queens in this timeline are as cripplingly obese as queens like Skillya in the canon timeline, most healthy queens are still rather large. Sorta like the size/weight of an average male elephant seal, or a salt water crocodile
Also, while some queens can still be jerkasses, they don’t usually eat their own young, as they don’t hold as much resentment towards them due to the less painful birthing process. Plus, their many drones usually bring them smaller fish and swamp dwelling creatures to keep them well fed
Baby sligs (or sliglets, as I like to call them) are born underwater and later take their first peek up to the surface after a couple of weeks
Raised by either one of their drone fathers or their many older siblings
baby Sligs are also born able to swim and walk on instinct, sort of like lizards. They only need to stick with their guardians for protection and to learn valuable life lessons from them like camouflage, avoiding predators, looking both ways before they cross the rivers etc
According to ex-Just Add Water employee Will on the Oddworld forums, Lorne Lanning originally envisioned Sligs having pig like fur, but this was cut from Oddysee due to technical limitations at the time. I headcanon that native Sligs had fur in the canon timeline but lost this trait due to their industrial lifestyle, similar to mudokon’s feathers. Hence in this timeline, some native Slig colonies do have fur.
usually more common, much thicker and more prominent on Sligs from colder climates as it helps them stay warm
The fur is also good for collecting dirt and growing moss and algae on, adding to the Sligs camouflage
I also have this headcanon that the noises sligs make for the BS and S’Mo BS commands in Oddysee and Exoddus gamespeak are remnants of their old language before they were enslaved by glukkons in canon. This is how Sligs communicate to each-other in this timeline: through a series of frog-like ribbit and croak vocalisations.
They do have the ability to speak language in the same way Mudokons and Glukkons do, I’ll be it in a limited capacity since they’re somewhat cut off from these language speaking societies and not used to talking in words. Think of it how, in canon, Gabbits like Munch can speak language with characters like Abe but can also call to other Gabbits through a dolphin-like “song”
Though they were never slaves, that doesn’t mean industrial societies like the Mudokon empire haven’t caused trouble for them
On top of occasionally hunting them to make high protein meat products and for sport, the Mudokon empire has also put their glukkon workers to use digging up Sligs swamplands for iron ore, as water that carried flakes of iron accumulated and settled in those swamps. As well as gathering peat from mires for fuel
These practices have been encroaching on the Sligs natural habitats. driving them out and disrupting their usual migration patterns
In a lot of cases, Mudokons purposefully try to drive off or exterminate Slig colonies. Viewing them as useless, dirty pests getting in the way of the precious resources that, much like everything else on Oddworld, the mudokons feel a sense of entitlement to
Alright, that all the points I got down for the big three. I do have some ideas for the other races like vykkers, steef, oktigi, meeches etc but for now, I’ll just leave it here. Again, please let me know what you think of all this and feel free to make contributions.

Introduction to Egyptian Astrology ☥ (Part 1)
Tumblr media
🇪🇬 Egyptian astrology has 12 signs just like Western astrology, except instead of being based on constellations, they’re based on Egyptian gods/goddesses - with the exception of the first sign, The Nile. The Egyptians believed that the gods they worshipped not only predetermined their life, but also imbued their qualities into an individual’s character. There are two different ways of calculating your Egyptian sign; using the traditional ‘decan’ method or the Greek influence method. The traditional method says that signs cover different days of different months in decans. The other version is based on what the Ancient Egyptians learned from the Ancient Greeks about Babylonian astrology, assigning dates in a similar way to Western astrology. This post will cover the traditional dates, I will do a post on the signs following the Greek influence if requested.
The Nile
Traditional dates: January 1 - 7, June 19 - 28, September 1 - 7, November 18 - 26
Ruled by the River Nile.
Characteristics: Like the river, those born under the sign of The Nile are nurturing and giving. Likely to succeed in a teaching career. Peace-loving and quiet, they often avoid any form of dissension. Emotional nature can be a disadvantage, but their calm and observant character makes them good at mediating and communicating. Endowed with a practical, diligent and analytical mind. Lovers of refinement. Receptive to riches and prefers to live in an ‘awakened’ state. Wise, tolerant and capable of motherly tenderness. However, The Nile people are subject to changing moods. Can be impulsive and domineering.

Deeply affected by the environment and others’ moods, can go from being elated to dispirited; the ability to empathize with the upsets of others can be a disadvantage. Prayer and devotions

The village Set grew up in, didn’t have a temple- place where people could make their offerings or practice their religion to it’s fullest. Everyone had to either travel all the way to the city estate, or try to do it in their own homes with limited resources- and the limited knowledge about the practices.
Set’s mother was amongst the very few in that village, who had real knowledge about their myths. This, alongside with some other small jobs she’d take, helped them settle within their new lives as commoners. She would often do prayers, in order to keep snakes/other dangerous animals out of houses, as well as recite fertility spells for women.
Fun fact: his mother met her new man/husband through her ritual/religious services. But that’s for another post.
It was his advanced knowledge about the myths and rites, and set him apart from other apprentices/students at the start of his priesthood. And it gave him a huge advantage, above his competitors for that position.
Despite his namesake, Set didn’t pray or devote himself entirely to the deity he was named after. There were many aspects of that God, he flat out didn’t like- but the God Set was the deity, that was the most assosciated with his passion for hunting. So, he would do his prayers for at least that aspect of the deity.
In fact: Set never truly understood why his mother would name him in such way (It’s completely up to you, whether or not he lacks self-awareness). And as such, he wasn’t all that pleased to be often compared to such deity due to his namesake. Especially considering his role as one of the priests- closest to the pharaoh, and later when he becomes the newest pharaoh.
Set actually could be considered a Thoth devotee, that was the primary- one deity he would mostly dedicate his prayers to. Although this seems to shift, when he becomes the pharaoh- and starts dedicating his prayers to the safety and well-being of his children.

Moon / Luna Masterpost
! DISCLAIMER: The following informationc are may wrong. If you see any misinformations, let me know, but not in the harsh way please! The links where the infromations (mainly) are from, are at the bottom. There are everything assosiated with the sun, use, what is helpful !
Note: i’m starting to post things like this. Mainly about astronomy, green witchery, kitchen witchcraft, zodiacs and more. If you are intrested or it was helpful please let me know!
The moon has been captivating people since the beginning of time. It’s guided our way on the darkest of nights and pulls at the tides as well as our emotions. There are myths and stories about the moon from every ancient culture, and it is still a central part of many pagan religions and spiritual paths. Here we break down the basics of lunar magick into easy-to-digest chunks including the moon’s phases, magical properties, correspondences, and more. Lunar energy is great for divination and dream work and to counteract Mars and Sun influences. Stones that correspond to the energy of the moon tend to be white and/or luminescent. Luna reflects the light of the Sun and is the closest sphere to Earth: the abode of physical form. It does not generate its own light as the Sun does, but serves as a filter for it, refracting and reflecting it in a coarser, more obfuscated manner.
The Female Body & The Moon
Just as the moon is reborn, grows, reaches its fullest potential, then wanes again, so do our bodies. For thousands of years, women have noticed their moon cycles (menstruation – the syllable men meaning moon/month) syncing up with the moon’s phases. This is lunar magick at its core. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, so too does the womb. This is why the moon is often associated with the Goddess in forms of neopaganism and Wicca.
The Triple Goddess & Our Lives
Wiccans associate the Triple Goddess with the moon’s phases: the maiden (waxing moon), the mother (full moon), and the crone (waning moon). We all go through these phases in our lives (both men and women) corresponding to our youth, adult child-rearing years, and our elder years. So we are all attuned to the moon phases and lunar magick, it’s just that most people don’t realize it.
The Moon in Mythology: Most Lunar deities in Western Tradition are female, though male lunar deities are found throughout the world as well. Lunar deities are often associated with Motherhood or the Sea.
The Moon in Astrology: As the moon moves across the sky, it passes through the various zodiac signs, primarily affecting our moods and reactions. Those who have a sun sign align to the water element will feel this effect most strongly. The moon travels through each sign every month, staying in each sign for up to three days before moving on. At the New Moon, she will be in the same sign as the Sun and at the Full Moon, she will be in the opposite sign.

Waxing and waning. Liminal states. Potentiality of manifestation. Healing. Psychicism. Dreaming and sleep. Lunar Herbs: Lunar herbs tend to be juicy and lightly sweet and with a sweet (sometimes cloying) fragrance. Either they produce watery fruits, or they have succulent leaves or both. Many moon herbs relieve mild pain and/or gently induce sleep. Many moon plants open at night and close during the day or release their scent at night to attract nocturnal pollinators. Moon plants often grow near water. White or silvery plants tend to correspond to lunar energy and sometimes these plants bear the mark of the moon even more strongly. Sedative, hormone-balancing, tonic to the brain or stomach, narcotic or painkilling plants. Cooling and moisturizing plants. Plants with moon-shaped parts. Plants with high water content. Medicinal plants affecting the emotions, sleep, or the female reproductive system. Often have a rotten or sickly sweet smell . Moon altar:
Moon altars are sacred, magical spaces that you create to honor and harness the different energies of the lunar cycle. Like all altars, a moon altar is a place where you can focus and direct energy through your witchcraft. You can perform spells or meditations at your moon altar or simply send your gratitude up to the moon for shining down on you night after night. I want to start by saying there’s no wrong way to make a moon altar. You can set it up inside or outside, elaborate or simple, and everything in between. Though there are certain magical tools that you can include on your altar to add power and focus, there’s no specific set of directions to set up a moon altar. That means you can get as creative as you like when setting up your moon altar. As long as your altar feels sacred, special, and powerful, you’re good to go!
Traveling Moon Altars: You can take your witchcraft with you wherever you go! A popular way to do this is to use a small drawstring bag, an altar cloth tied up to make a pouch, or an empty mint tin to store the magical tools for your moon altar. Put travel-friendly magical tools in your altar containers such as small crystals, tarot cards, birthday candles, colored ribbon (for knot spells or color magic), or any other objects that you feel belong in your moon altar. These altars are great if you love to go hiking and want to set up an altar outside under the moon.  Stationary Moon Altars: This is what people typically think of when it comes to altars. These are the altars that are set up on a dedicated space in your home or outdoor area. Some witches will keep these altars up all the time; other witches will keep their tools in a box or drawer when not in use. These altars are great because you can deck them out with all kinds of trinkets and tools and not have to worry about losing or damaging these items during travel. Mental Altars: This is a more unconventional altar option that might appeal to you if you love visualizing. You can actually make a moon altar using only your mind. In your mind’s eye, visualize a sacred space in any location in the world and include any magical tools you’d like to use on your moon altar. Visualizing an altar is a great meditation on its own or combined with other moon rituals like taking a moon bath (in lunar light) or performing divination magic under the moon. If you don’t have the time or energy to set up an altar, you can sit outside under the moon or by a window and simply visualize your moon altar.
representing the moon on the altar: chrystals (Some witches believe that moonstone is best used during the waxing moon phase because all the other phases of the moon deplete or dilute its energy.), with plants, herbs, flower Candles to Represent the Moon: Any kind of candle can represent the moon because candles are tools that provide light. White tea lights are ideal for moon altars because they’re inexpensive, and they’re round like the moon. They also make black tea lights which are nice to use during the new moon. Use your moon candle for spells or divination methods like scrying and candle gazing. You can burn intentions with your moon candle if you like. You can also try lighting your candle for the waxing moon and full moon phases and keeping your candle unlit for the waning moon and new moon phases. Unusual Tools to Represent the Moon: egg, marshmallow, sugar or salt, ribbon, a mirror

Pop Culture Paganism: A Mental Exploration
My own personal thought experiment regarding a mental exploration of Pop Culture Paganism and Witchcraft. Don’t like it, you don’t need to read it. Flamers will be ignored. Constructive discussion and rebuttal is encouraged.
It’s worth noting that I’m a fairly recent “convert” to a pagan setting. I consider myself an eclectic polytheistic pagan witch. I worship a number of gods from different pantheons, and have a generally mixed Eclectic spirituality. I’m still learning and experimenting and discovering my craft and my path. I am not an expert by any means, and the following are my personal opinions. The only reason this post is not Private like most of my entries on this blog is because I feel this discussion may be validating for some who are put down for their faith.
Now without further ado, if you’re interested, check under the Cut. ;)
I’ve been doing a lot of research recently. It started by my looking up if it’s offensive to the gods to watch/enjoy/associate them with pop culture. Is Hades offended by my love of the Disney version of him? Would Bast or Serket be offended by my using images of them as they appear in video games like Smite?
I’ve come to answer myself with; it depends. It’s going to require experimentation, meditation and asking each specific god their preference, but in general, I think the answer is mostly no. If you have the proper intent, I think the gods appreciate it all the same.
I found an interesting Reddit Thread in which their was a discussion about Pop Culture Paganism. I didn’t realize that was even a thing, but reading the discussion was fascinating, and validating. While some are offended by the mere thought of not strictly following the old ways as closely as we can, others argue that myths of the old gods began as stories.
It’s doubtful that if these gods existed as real people or divine beings before humans, that these stories we know of them are one hundred percent accurate. Humans are fallible, we embellish, we exaggerate, and even when trying to be as accurate as possible, we still insert personal bias into everything. We can’t help it, it’s in our nature. So any story, true or not, is going to, at it’s core, be subject to the bias both of the original first-hand account, by every subsequent retelling, and by the person hearing it.
Therefore, why is it offensive to the gods to follow a new retelling of them? a modern version of a god, like, Loki and Thor, for instance, should be just as valid. It’s doubtful that the comic writers and film producers over at Marvel have consciously been contacted by Loki and Thor to tell them how to depict them, but does that mean that the gods weren’t influencing their own stories? Could Loki not have inserted the ideas, placed sources of inspiration into the lives of the writers? Of course he could have.
Another point that was brought up was that new gods spring up all the time. There is a new goddess being worshiped in India by the Dalit community. There are authors who have unwittingly created new gods or religions with their writings. There are sects of people who worship the Valar from Tolkien’s universe, the Jedi Way is a recognized religion now, Lovecraftian monsters are widely accepted as actual ancient beings and have permeated so many areas of culture. Some Celtic deities are traced back to seeming works of fiction.
Some people use pop culture figures as associations for their gods; more tangible, relate-able and realistic than their ancient stories. I recently made a strong association between Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock and Thoth. I’ve also used a Tolkien Mantra of sorts to honor Anubis; Patience being a struggle for me, and one of His attributes, I will occasionally find myself thinking of Treebeard’s signature philosophy, “do not be hasty.”
Some do actually worship fictional characters, even those not intended to be deified. Some use archetypal characters for worship and find pop culture associations for them, but some literally worship Batman or Sailor Moon. Some use fictional characters in spirit work, or create spells around them. The concept of the energy, the love and adoration, the living and breathing history and collective thought poured into and about these characters, this whole process makes absolute sense to me. I’m not sure if I’ll go quite so deep into it, though perhaps. Vi has already mentioned potentially worshiping Clavicus Vile. I’d be okay with that.
Given that many works of fiction draw from real life mythology, legends or properties, a lot of fictional deities and characters have some real-life counterpart. One can find strong correlations to the Gems in Stephen Universe having similar properties to their real-life crystal and stone counterparts. Many fictional deities are amalgamations of real gods. Hell, many “primary” sources of old gods are works of fiction in and of themselves, such as the works of Homer. While there may be truth the stories, they are embellished and theatrical to make it interesting to read, and are at best an artist’s interpretation of events.
I saw another post today that was so validating. Can’t find it right now, or I would link it. Basically it said that a god becomes a god when someone believes they are one. It could be a single person. They are a god. The older the god, the more energy put towards it, the more followers they have, the stronger they become. So in my mind, old gods like the Egyptian, Roman, Norse, Celtic, ect. gods, those of ancient civilizations, most of these will be far more powerful than a new god with a small following. Millions of people did and still do worship Anubis. There are probably only a select few who worship Dipper Pines (though given GF’s cult following, I’m sure I’d be surprised at that number-). Therefore Anubis has more influence and power as an established god, able to reach out even to those unaware of him at the time, and sometimes bring people to the fold this way. Versus Dipper, if deified, would have a harder time calling to a random new child to join the cult of the Mystery Twins.
My concept, which I originally considered a sort of excuse or explanation of my odd and unusual spiritual beliefs, is that energy is a force, it’s neither created, nor is it destroyed. If magic is just channeling one’s will into existence, expending your energy and maybe using other energy aids (a burning candle, a charged crystal, stored energy in plant matter, ect) to yield a desired effect, then why can’t the same concept be put towards anything? If we can will the spirits to read our futures, if we can will two people to fall in love, or will the universe to cause someone bad luck or harm, why can we not will a new being into existence?
In the same way that offerings, prayers and even uttering the name can strengthen older, established gods; in the same way, why can I not make offerings, prayers and epitaphs to Smaug, or Winnie the Pooh, or any fictional character?
Personally, the concept of pop culture magic is also fascinating to me, and that makes even more logical sense to me. If we take a character like Ash Ketchum. A character of indomitable spirit, fierce determination, immortality, and innocence; a character beloved by millions, who’s journeys have inspired generations of children, even shaped the lives of some - there is magic there. There is so much collective thought, energy, love, adoration there. So many know his name, his image, his stories. There are myths and legends about him, theories about other adventures, other possibilities. Artwork is made, statues created, there are buildings dedicated to his world, his friends and family, the animals and creatures of his world.
Even if you don’t see the correlations to a god from an outside perspective, that amount of power centered around some pixels on a television screen is real. It’s there, it exists. No witch or magic user should be able to deny that. Using that stored energy in a spell would be simple when looking at it from this perspective. In the way we can take an animal, look over all its aspects, and channel it into our spells. In the same way we can invoke Mother Bear for strength, maternal protection and love, we could invoke a character like The Doctor for wisdom, compassion and a drive to do what’s right.
The other angle here, is that anyone who subscribes to the Many Worlds Theory can’t really deny the possibility of most of this. This theory proposes there are an infinite number of universes full of infinite possibilities. There is a world where the Roman Empire never collapsed and we’re all living under the new Caesar. There is a world where modern day man is still living alongside dinosaurs. There is a world where ours does not exist. There is a world exactly the same as this one, except that you ate cereal for breakfast today instead of scrambled eggs. There’s a world where dogs are the dominant species and keep humans as pets. There is a world where the Avengers are fighting against Thanos. One where Luke Skywalker is teaching younglings in the Jedi Temple. One where Ash and Pikachu are traveling to another new region in the Pokemon world. One where we live in a giant computer simulation. Infinite. Possibilities.
I’m not here to convince anyone, I may or may not even practice any of this, it’s just some interesting thought exercise. I like thinking about things like this sometimes. I also think that in a world where we are beginning to pave our own Paths; we’re inventing identities for ourselves, discovering new genders, sexualities, magics, gods, everything; that we should be kind to each other as we discover these new avenues. To each their own, and live and let live <3
Blessed be, everyone, and may you all find whatever Path you wind up on fulfilling and full of joy.

Egyptian Languages
Hey! As a first post, I assume it is the norm to just post an essay. This was my first historical investigation for my senior years at high school, and it is on Egypt and the progression of its alphabets. This is the original! I already have recieved my feedback (I recieved 28 / 30) but more critique would be greatly appreciated!
Egypt And Its Writing Systems -
Throughout history, Egypt has experienced many changes in its alphabetical systems. Although hieroglyphs are the most commonly referenced of the few, the Egyptians had three main writing systems that were used at differing points throughout its incredibly massive timeline. This report aims to outline their uses and how they fell out of use throughout history. It also aims to describe how they relate to one another.
Early - 3500 B.C Onward
In her article, “The Conception and Development of The Egyptian Writing System,” Elise V. Macarthur talks about some of the oldest examples of Egyptian writing found. “but  the  most  salient  early  examples  date to the Naqada I period (ca. 3750–3500 b c) ... Among the more popular motifs displayed are boats, animals, and humanoid figures with feathers ... Their composition is seemingly narrative, but their meaning is difficult to ascertain.” These first examples can be hard to distinguish from pictographic iconography, as most ‘writing’ dating from the predynastic period in Egypt is hieroglyphic in nature. Hieroglyphs usually consisted of  few consonants condensed in one symbol, with each symbol meaning something in its own right. The connection between Mesopotamia and Egypt in the early writing systems is hard to prove, but their close proximity may have influenced the introduction of a written syllabic alphabet (the intersection of the cuneiform forms of akkadian and sumarian, for example, may have contributed to the progression of hieroglyphics to syllabic), progressing the movement of the Egyptian alphabet past Hieroglyphs. Although spending time looking for sources on the matter of external influences on the Egyptian writing system from this period, it proved hard to come by and as such this theory could not be proven, although this connection is very likely. Hieroglyphs as a system were only the beginning of writing in Ancient Egypt and the progression goes as follows (although any dates involved are fluid and may intersect, as these written languages were often used for different purposes):
Hieroglyphics
Hieratic
Demotic
Coptic
Through Egypt’s long kingdom ship, they experienced many influences that affected their language that impact the progression of writing.
Hieratic Script - 3200 B.C Onward
Hieratic is the script credited as being the catalyst for the progression of Egyptian cursive in Egypt and the New Kingdom. It was a multifunctional text type, and despite being called ‘Hieratic’ the writing system was not commonly used in religious practice until the rise of demotic, which replaced hieratic in its secular function. There are a few notable cases where hieratic has been used in burial rituals and tombs, but hieroglyphics were the preferred writing system for that matter, as symbols could have different meanings depending on context.
There are two main and well known forms of hieratic script in Egypt: ‘Normal’ hieratic, hailing from Lower Egypt, and “abnormal’ hieratic, also hailing from Lower Egypt but more commonly known for its use in the upper parts of egypt (more specifically in Thebes, where it is known as Theban cursive).
A notable area of concentrated hieratic graffiti is in the tomb of Nakht the Gardener, as written about in the journal ‘The Hieratic Texts in the tomb of Nakht the Gardener, at Thebes (no.161) as copied by Robert Hay.’ In this journal, the author Stephen Quirke provides commentary on the hieratic graffiti in the tomb. His tomb dates to around the time of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III, and was also dedicated to his wife. Although in his journal he is labelled as a gardener, Nahkt and his wife Tawy  most likely worked in temples and in the delivery of flowers to places of worship. His tomb would not be such if Nahkt did not have an education, as he also trained as a scribe.
The tomb of Nahkt and Tawy is interesting, as it represents the use of both hieroglyphics and hieratic in a tomb, which the scribe or scribes actively switch between throughout the tomb. This shows us, not only the incredible skill of the scribes, but that
alphabets in ancient Egypt were interchangeable in their uses.
Hieratic as a text type fell out of popular use by around 200 BC and was replaced by demotic for the use of non-religious activity. Used extensively throughout its time in the Egyptian limelight for the legal, administrative and financial aspects of society, Hieratic was a precursor to a similar writing system that would begin to take itself to the grave of writing systems.
Demotic - 650 B.C Onward
Throughout the Ptolemaic period and even into the Roman era of Egypt, demotic was used extensively for almost everything in Egypt. Demotic marked the end of the solely Egyptian way of doing things, as during the reign of the Ptolemies and into the occupation of Egypt by the Romans, Greek began to be used in many legal matters around Egypt. Although more common than hieratic, demotic proved to be just as exclusive; bringing it to a grave that many great writing systems fall in to.
Demotic began to be replaced by Greek during the Ptolemaic period in Egypt, where demotic began to be only used for minor graffiti and notes on already Greek documents. As Egypt fell towards a more Roman and Greek influence, so did its language, resulting in the gradual decline of demotic throughout Egypt.
Used extensively throughout Egypt under the reign of Psamtik I, demotic, especially late demotic, shows little resemblance to its beginning in hieroglyphics (unlike hieratic, which still had shapley resemblance). It is noticeably more cursive, smaller, and can in some cases look very similar to modern Arabic. This disconnect is evident in the practice of converting demotic script back to hieroglyphics. Many scholars can link certain spellings of words back to hieratic and subsequently hieroglyphics, but this does not mean that any readable sentence structure will come from this. The result is often jumbled and muddled up, to the point where no Egyptian scribe would write like that.
From the point of foreign rule onwards, Egypts legal work began to move from demotic to Greek, but the literary side of things flourished, and many famous works of this period were written in demotic. “The first tale of Setne Khaemwas” was a literary work based on the fourth son of Ramesses II by the name of Khaemweset. This fictional version of the prince was said to have fought the ghost of a prince long dead over a magic book thought to have been written by Thoth himself. The piece, as a whole, is exceedingly complex and long, proving that literature of a high standard (held to such a standard even today) could have been written in a dying alphabet in the time of Roman leadership.
Coptic - 200 A.D And Into The Future
Coptic is an Afro-Asiatic language which developed in Egypt that is still prevalent to this day, although very ancient. Coptic is a written language which is primarily based on Greek, using their alphabet and borrowing letters from demotic to create a new Egyptian alphabet. Coptic is still used today by the Coptic Christians, who are one of the most persecuted religious groups in Egypt. Coptic is noted as being much easier to learn than demotic, hieratic and hieroglyphics, as the alphabet that coptic was built on was already established and only borrowed a few things from the previous alphabets of Egypt.
Coptic is a dying language. It's not dead yet, but it's close and the inevitability of it is very distressing. Coptic is the closest thing that us as a society have to ancient Egyptian, and it is so upsetting to know we are not actively working to save an ancient language that is a known link to the past that we can study.
Many orthodox christian texts dating from the second century AD were written in Coptic Egyptian, and many of these texts are still studied today by the modern day Coptic Christians. Some of the earliest Egyptian chirstian texts were written by the “Desert Fathers” in Coptic Egyptian, and these go on to prove some of the earliest Christian texts from this area.
There is a dire importance that modern day scholars take interest in the Coptic language; it is a vital link to the past and is still of cultural relevance today, as proven by the Coptic Christians. There was much struggle finding resources and articles on the Coptic languages. Coptic is a necessary addition to the many scholarly articles that exist about every previous Egyptian alphabet.
How Egypt Progressed Through the Years
Egypt has had to travel a long way to get to where they are today. Throughout the years they have experienced many interferences and influences on their writing systems that have changed it, for better or for worse. At first there were the hieroglyphics, which is the writing system not covered in this report. Hieroglyphs in Egypt are some of the most well known and speculated forms of putting things on paper (or walls), and was the base for the rest of Egypt’s alphabetical development. There are many similarities that can be seen between the next in line hieratic - hieratic is very pictographic, and very large in its cursive form. Demotic is starting to stray even farther away from its hieroglyphic ancestors, as the form and shape shrinks, and it overall begins to resemble modern day alphabets. Coptic, the final stage of the ancient Egyptian alphabetical development, is not similar at all to hieratic or hieroglyphic. It is based of Greek and only borrows from demotic. Coptic, although still used today, is the least researched ancient Egyptian alphabet.
Egypt has travelled a long way since the first hieroglyphic carvings on monumental rocks, and this progression has lead to what we know of ancient Egypt today.

What is Emergent Animism?
Tumblr media
As much as I would like to avoid it, I feel I must first define Emergent Magick (EMK). Especially considering that at this point, there are maybe about fifty practitioners of EMK on the planet. If you follow my other blog, Scroll of Thoth, you probably have some idea what it is, but I know that I have failed to define it with any concision. Part of that is because I am publishing a book on the subject, which will be released in early 2019. It really needs an entire book and more to get the concept across. Also because like any other magical philosophy, it’s slippery, and no matter how skilled I think I am as a writer, words always fail to encompass it in its entirety. And you’ve probably figured out by now I’m a wordy son-of-a-bitch, which makes it doubly hard to do this. I’ll endeavor to make it as short as possible so we can get on with the real subject at hand.
To learn more about Emergent Magick, follow my other tumblr blog Scroll of Thoth, and sign up for the EMK Facebook group.
EMK defines magick as, “The art of altering consciousness.” In essence, the universe itself is created and directed by consciousness, and magick is a way to influence that consciousness. Consciousness itself lacks universally accepted definition. For our purposes it includes any sufficiently complex system that can perceive. If you accept that sub-atomic systems are sufficiently complex, and that quantum theory proves that particles have some form of perception, this includes everything in the universe to a greater or lesser degree. Art, the activity of creation, influences consciousness. Ritual is the art of the magician, and it is specifically designed to alter consciousness.
In Emergent Magick, a magus performs rituals with the purpose of creating altered states of consciousness. The magus then takes what they learn from those rituals to build an ever more concise paradigm, essentially a model for the universe and a method to alter it. While a magus can certainly learn from the magi who came before them, it is what they learn through altered states of consciousness that best informs their magick. Since all consciousness is perspective, what a magus learns through altered states has more weight than anything they can learn by other means.
The ultimate goal of the magus is to perceive the unity of consciousness. To interact with it as part of a larger whole. This manifests in the physical plane by forming tribes of magi and working with them to experience their paradigm, form bonds of love and acceptance, and to influence the collective unconscious through the creation of culture.
At least that’s the short form description of Emergent Magick. Which finally brings us back to Emergent Animism (EMAN).
Emergent Animism is the art of communicating with the spirits.
At least that’s the one-sentence vital core of it. Some old-school magi like to have things summed up in a sentence or two (and I am one of those magi). Why Emergent? First, because I am one of the creators of Emergent Magick and it is how I currently define my practice. Since Emergent Animism is my personal paradigm, it comes from an EMK perspective. Because the methods used to explore and define the paradigm are the methods of EMK. Verified personal experience takes precedent over accepted knowledge (although there will be plenty of that). Those experiences are then shared with my personal tribe and their experiences added to the body of knowledge. You may notice the shifting tense there, because this is work that has been performed and is ongoing. In fact, the creation of this blog is a lot about me documenting my personal paradigm, and renewed awareness that I need to get back to the basics and start rebuilding things from the ground up. This blog will contain descriptions and results of my daily practice.
Which brings us to animism. Much smarter people with better sources have described animism. And I really want to just tell people to go read Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, by Mircea Eliade and Willard R. Trask, and then come back and continue reading this. But I understand that’s not a realistic expectation, so I’m gonna have to give you my woefully inadequate description. Animism has been called the world’s first religion, and from the archaeological evidence and current anthropology there is little reason to doubt that all hunter-gatherers practiced some form of animism. Animism as a world view, sees the universe as populated with spirits. In animism, all things have some vital essence that can be communicated with, from spirits of rivers, mountains, and lakes, to trees, rocks, and clouds, also the spirits of humans, animals, insects, and the spirits of those living creatures that have died. Some animists also believe in alien spirits that come from other dimensions of reality. The practice of animism is the communication with these spirits through some form of altered state of consciousness. This can be ritual, dance, music, meditation, and the use of psychoactive substances. Shamanism is a particular type of animism where individuals of a tribe use altered states of consciousness to contact the spirit realm, referred to as journeying, and petitions the spirits for the benefit of the shaman and their tribe. I do not consider myself a shaman for various nit-picking reasons that I am sure I will go into at some point.
In Emergent Animism, spirit is synonymous with consciousness. So the art of magick in EMAN terms is the art of communicating with the spirits. Which entails all forms of conversations, pacts, offerings, and all the other traditional and non-traditional methods of contacting them.
Still interested? It’s going to get better from here. This blog will mainly include my writing on the subject, and how I practice magick, along with other resources I find helpful. Know right off the bat that I don’t think anyone should try to pick this up whole-cloth and use it as their own. All magi must ultimately discover their own paradigm and follow that. But I do know it has been helpful for me as a magician to read about other people’s practice. To see what works for them and what does not and learn from it. I find the magical world to be sorely lacking in resources that describe exactly what magi are doing. There’s plenty of description of rituals and theory but little of what a magus actually does on a day-to-day basis. I hope I can add a unique perspective and inspire some people to try these practices themselves. I say don’t follow my path, but do feel free to steal anything that you think can work for you.
Why take my word on any of this? I have some credentials. I have dabbled off and on through my entire life, but truthfully, I only came to seriously dedicate myself to magick in the past decade, much later in life than most. I am initiated member of the Illuminates of Thanateros, and hold a degree in Comparative Religion. I am co-creator of Emergent Magick, and Scribe for the Order of Emergent Magi. At the risk of displaying my ego, I consider myself well-read on a variety of subjects—religion, history, anthropology, archaeology, primatology, Ancient Egyptian spiritual practice, to name a few. As a devoted magus in the service of Thoth, I also happen to believe I am a passable writer.
What I am not is a great magician. I admit that my own work is sloppy, ill-documented, lacking in discipline, and does not meet basic standards of progressive research. That’s another reason why I’m doing this. To hold myself accountable to actually doing the work the way it should be done. It’s well past time for me to get back to the bottom, and do this the right way.
Which is why I decided to make this a tumblr blog. I could have just decided to write another book, but I have plenty of other books I need to write. Doing this as a blog keeps it raw. No content editors, no limitations that come with putting things in print. I can use art that I find on tumblr to illustrate my feelings and link books, articles, and video. No need to make this a single coherent narrative. I can just fire off thoughts as I have them, long or short. Right now the goal is one long text post a day, maybe a couple of short ones, and miscellaneous re-blogs and links when I stumble across them or they seem appropriate.
