𓁞 Intro to Egyptian Astrology 𓁛
Tumblr media
👁 What are the Egyptian Decans?
The static zodiac of the Egyptians was formed by the conjunct of the 12 Houses, where the Sun entered according to the passing of the year Sothis*. Those signs are the 12 we know today, but together with them, the old ones used to put in the head the Deities whose influence covered each month of the year. The months were divided in three equal parts of ten days, and those were the Decans — those represent about ten degrees in Space and concomitantly 10 days in our Earth time.
So, in each month there are three Decans, and those reveal the Stars that represent the Guardian Deities. To understand the Egyptian decans, and implement them in any astrological reading, is to know a new depth of the intelectual, emotional and conceptual phenomena of a person.
*The Sothic cycle is a period of 1,461 Egyptian civil years of 365 days each or 1,460 Julian years averaging 365¼ days each.
👁 The Egyptian Decans and their Guardian Deities I
In total, there are 36 Guardian Deities, those you’ll see, also appear in the Kabbalah — 18 of them have regency over matters that reside above the Earth, and the other 18 have regency of matters that happen on Earth
The Sun, Moon, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury occupy the space of divine hierarchy, and are called the Interpreter Deities. Those are the ones whose regular movement tended to announce progress and prosperity, though Saturn had a special veneration for it.
👁 The Egyptian Decans and their Guardian Deities II
As any Astrological aspect, the *Guardian Deities, or Genies, of each sign adhere to a specific characteristic that can be seen in those born under that particular decan — uniting it with other aspects, a deeper and more meaningful understanding can be reached.

Claudius Ptolemy (100 - 170) King of Astrologers and his famous work “Tetrábiblos” (Four Books) also known as Apotelematika (~ On the effects). The main key-question of Ptolemy can be summarized in one question: To what extent do changes in the world correspond to the positions of the stars?
Tumblr media
Over ten centuries this work influenced the astrology of the occident. In critical processing Ptolemy is reconditioning Ancient Egyptian, Babylonian and Greek astrology by collecting the astrological knowledge and by "cleansing" the systems of (religious) mythology. It was discussed for centuries, if Ptolemy is the original writer, as it was common to publish under famous pseudonyms. Today we have evidences to locate the time of origin between 139 - 161. Ptolemy is particularly critical against all indefinite claims, where he shows the spririt of the real scientist, by emphasizing, that all astrological knowledge is based on hypthothesis, as it will stay impossible to conisider and know of all the influences, effecting on the galaxy, the planets and the region, the human-being lives in. The Bible of Astrology by the so said Pharao and Priest Nechepso and Petosiris, can be considered as a negative example: Boundless interpreting of fixed stars, predictions used for sensation, motivated by lucrative and therefore false means. Ptolemy also rejected the Doctrine of Decane as 'tangled rhapsody'. Astrology is not an evidence-based science, but similiar to laws of nature, the researcher can built principles by observing and translating the phenomenon into a formula.
Tumblr media
The main works of Ptolemy Megale Syntaxis and Constructio mathematica are known under the Arabic title Almagest. Camerius was the first book binder, who published the first flawless translation of the Tetrabiblos syntaxis in 1533. Melanchthon writes 1300 years after the publicition to Erasmus Ebner about the Tetrábiblos and is praising the scientific significance behind the astrological work of Ptolemy and with regard to Plato, underlining that we can (re-)find God in the most multifarious and mellifluous ways and that God has given the human-beings science and retained it also in the creation, so it can still shine through the manifold circulation of being.
Tumblr media
This wonderful velvet edition is the rare version of Camerius, provided by Melanchthon. It is huge luck in historico-cultural way, that Ptolemy could have saved those testimonies from the fires in Alexendria, as he has, similiar to Euclid, the special merit to have collected and preserved knowledge, that would have got lost. The book is, as the title assumes, divided into four parts. The first book deals with the basics of astrology, describing the system of general predicitions, conditions of the stars and the movements of planetary orbits. In the second book Ptolemy is presenting the geographical astrology and the meteorology, here we learn the different constellations and their influence on earth. Similiar to the calculation of the nativity, it is necessary to set the region of preditional purpose into relation to deduce the astrological devination into forecast. It is exciting how geometry is used to calculate under which planet and stars the region is reigned. The Method of Angular House (in German Eckhäuser, in Greek Kentra) is also used in the system of Cabbala. In all likelihood, those methods came from Egypt, through Alexander the Great and the expansive work and travelling of the Priest of Marduk and Belus named Berossos (~ 280 BC), who is not only the most significant beholder of Babylonian history, but also an astrologist, who gave birth to the Hellenistic Astrology. It is likely, that due to the long period of astrological research in Babylon and India, that the knowledge wandered slowly into the European continent/culture under the mass migration. Small reference to King Sulgi (* 2092 BC), it is written that after "death" and the Ascension [!], he has become the Star of Sulgi: "Shepherd I am, may they praise me in prayer like a star." In astrological history it is generally said, that the Ancient Egyptians are the Masters of Trigones (relativeness between planets and the sign of zodiac, equal distances between right angles to the tropic point = Equinox) and the Chaldean (who where also living in the Mesopotamian region, but seem to have "dissapeared") are considered as the Masters of Angular Houses. This whole calculation could take books of explanation, it will not be possible to establish a holistic examination of this huge theme. But this system of calculation is the basis for white and black magic aswell. The hylegialic points of the Angular house give signs about the descendent spirit, later Paracelsus is defining the punctum ascemdens as the rising point of the ecliptic. Those methods are obligatory for the next book, because in the books three and four the astrology of birth is the main topic. Ptolemy underdraws the two sides of being: There are effects of necessity, which can not be changed (Laws of Nature) and there are effects of convertibility (diseases by unhealthy lifestyle). Ptolemy is comparing the aim behind predicitions in the prohibition of bad events, he takes the Egyptians as an example for connecting astrology with medicine. Actually the system of astrology is prioritising the moment of cenception for a 'valid' prediction of future, as we have the tendency to rather not know the circumstances of our procreation, the interpretation of our fate is scheduled in our natal hour. It is believed that all crafts in heaven have an impact on earth (just think of the moon and its effects on earth, the sun as life-giver) and that the constellation in the galaxy is also forming the seed and therefore the skills and handicaps. All regions are under the influence of different planets, each planet has different characteristics and therefore effects on our earth, ultimately on the single individual. By interpreting the sublunary basic elements and putting them into the context of natural origin in the cosmos, it is possible to set up a thesis for henceforth forecasting.
Tumblr media
Just as a reminder: There is no solid knowledge, errors can not be prohibited. Until this time, parts of astrological prediction are used in weather forecasts, but we all made the empirical experience, that the weather can break rapidly, when the winds, who are also the impulses of reigning planets, are changing. Empirical it is also indisputable, that the region, we are born in, has a massive impact on our personality, on our physical development, on our chances for mobility and education. The relevance of the first moments and years, after our birth, are getting more and more attention due to neuro-physiological findings. As there is much for which our power is limited, there is enough to upheave ourselves, to find new forms of break-throughs, when we are chained, to nurture the hope to carry on and bring sense into our life. And if it is just a little twinkling star far faaar away from our stretched out arm, as we live in this symphony of creation, we should strive to bring all those different wonderful tones into accordance, after every single one was able to find harmony within himself.

The Decans (Egyptian Astronomy)
If you're looking for information on this topic, please refer to the source text, linked HERE, rather than my personal notes. As a non-historian, there's likely to be misinterpretation here.
According to Theresa Ainsworth, "The decans were a set of thirty-six stars or constellations selected by the Egyptians in the First Intermediary Period as a means of marking the progression of the hours during the night."
Tumblr media
This chart shows an "idealized" star chart. From what I understand, this means that it is not an exact copy of an existing chart, but an educated reconstruction. Ainsworth mentions that examples of these charts are damaged, and riddled with errors. On a side note, I wonder how this is known. Is it assumed that certain charts are incorrect based on patterns existing in other charts? Is there evidence of over writing, revision? In any case, for my purposes, this chart is more than sufficient.
To read the chart, Ainsworth describes the following: an observer would look east, and then find the decan closest to the horizon. Referring to the chart, the observer would find the column that contains the current date (each column being composed of ten days). They would then be able to find the decan in that column, and refer to the row to find what hour it was.
Tumblr media
This chart shows a list of "pseudo-decans," developed by William Dodd using computer simulations. The simulation was limited to stars with a "visual magnitude brighter than three," and following an appropriate path at appropriate times of the year. The number in the parenthesis identifies the stars brightness, with lower numbers associated with greater brightness.
Importantly, Dodd's list is based on several assumptions. In this simulation, he makes the assumption that the decans were some of the brightest stars. This is a fair and accepted assumption, but it is important to note that we really don't know how decans were chosen. As these star charts are thought by some to be serve much more of a religious purpose than practical, its not inconceivable that less intuitive factors played a role in determining decans. There is also the criteria that the psuedo decans follow a specific ecliptic path. I'll refrain from discussing that, because, frankly, I'm going to need to reread that section a few more times to understand it.
Ainsworth writes, "Unfortunately, there is no way to match these pseudo-decans to the Egyptian stellar names." I've been looking for a source that includes Egyptian stellar names, and had hoped to know their modern correlation. While mildly disappointing, I'm thrilled by the implication that we have records of the names, even out of context. Thats something I'll have to look into later.
I'm too lazy to properly format this citation. Link to the essay is embedded in the title.

sekhmet, goddess of vengeance (asteroid 5381)
Tumblr media
Sekhmet means "she who is powerful". It is believed that she was created from the fire of Ra's eye when he looked at earth and saw the disloyalty of humanity. His ire towards humankind made her a weapon; she was meant to destroy those who were disobedient to the gods. She became ruthless and had a great bloodlust; she killed so many people that Ra had to devise a plan to calm her. He gave her a mixture of red wine and blood - she drank it believing that it was purely blood and became more peaceful. In some versions, she passes out and Ra removes part of her essence to create Bast or Hathor. After the drink (in either version), she was less bloodthirsty and more manageable. IN MY OPINION Sekhmet in your chart can represent a) where you are powerful, b) where you seek vengeance, c) where your wrath gets the better of you, d) where you are ruthless, and/or e) where a part of you is missing after a moment in life where you are too angry/powerful.
Tumblr media
i encourage you to look into the aspects of sekhmet along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of sekhmet AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede sekhmet!

𓁞 Egyptian Astrology II 𓁛
Tumblr media
● The Zodiac Signs and their characteristics
Astrological signs are found in numerous sarcophagi, from Deaderah to Gizeh. The Egyptian priests divided the fixed stars situated along the entire static band of the zodiac into twelve constellations. Each of these constellations determined in the individual who was born under its influence a particular social factor. In addition, they linked the constellations to the planets, combining the action of the constellations and the planets. They also established a close relationship between the constellations and the human body. In this way, each part of the body received the influence of the appropriate constellation and the planet connected to it.
In the minds of the Egyptian priests, each sign could be interpreted as the synthesis of an individual's particularities. Because of their cult of the Sun God and the Mother Moon, they considered that man's actions could be represented along a trajectory. This trajectory starts from the heart of man, passes through the stars and planets and returns enriched by the knowledge and powers that it confers on that man after having been in contact with the prodigious sidereal mirror. Such knowledge then gives man the possibility of initiating himself into the mysteries and powers of the Universe, with the condition that he wants to pass the initiatory door represented by death. Once this difficult passage has been overcome, man is reborn and the trajectory can begin again, covering the complete cycle.
This cycle summarizes the symbolism of the Sun among the Egyptians. The immortal Sun rises every morning and descends every night to the realm of the dead. Then he is reborn the next morning after having crossed hell or the domain of darkness. The trajectory therefore passes through several notable points: the East, where the Sun rises, which represents the heart of man not yet initiated; the zenith, symbol of the stars and planets, which represents spiritual knowledge; the West, where the Sun disappears, symbol of each man's initiatory passage through death; the dangerous crossing of hell, symbol of man's unconscious that reveals itself in his dreams; finally, the Sun that rises from the earth, symbol of rebirth and of the initiatory passage successfully carried out by man.
The complete cycle represents the Cosmos with its upper part and its lower part. The zodiac sign is different for each human being, because it gives him the possibility to discover himself as he is, according to a trajectory and a truth that is different from person to person.

As someone who has always been fascinated by the sky, stars and planets, I’ve become more accustomed to look up at the sky more. Cloud watching and observing the constellations gives me a sense of peace and awe. Space is so vast and so incredibly expansive. For a pagan like me, especially an animist, the sky is a living soul just like the stars. ✨

Oh my god, I found a freaking goldmine.
They have audio tracks for each name, as a sort of guide for how it might have been pronounced. I'm going to want to do some more research into the purpose of the different lists (AR1, EAT3, etc), but this seems perfect!

Anubis (1912) is of above-average temperament. The Book of the Dead tells of a mishap that Anubis got into where his wife lies about being intimate with his brother Bata (translates to ‘soul giver.’). Anubis confronts his brother and learns the truth from his brother rather than mindlessly reacting.
