Phantom Thief Outfit Breakdown

Okay so exactly one (1) person asked me abt my opinions on the phantom thief's metaverse costumes (thank you @waywardsalt) bc I mentioned them in the tags of a poll so now you are all locked into my insane rant abt this topic. Originally this was a power point i made to vent but i realized its too long to post in its entirety (its more than 20 slides long) so you get this monstrosity of a post. I'm going to split this into multiple posts discussing each thief's designs bc there's a lot and it'd be too long; will link each post at top.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a designer, have relatively poor fashion sense, and these are largely just my opinions on the matter, obviously people are going to disagree. I'd love to discuss this and get feedback on it but if you're an asshole im not going to entertain you.

Starting with the worst (imo), let's begin with Akechi's black mask costume.

This is, from a purely design and visual standpoint, the worst to me because it simply has too much going on, and all of it gets lost in its attempts to be cool or intimidating. This attempt at being menacing, presumably, is lost in translation and mostly just makes it look uncomfortable, edgy, and sort of goofy.

It seems to be pulling on ideas of knight armor, birds of prey, straight jackets, and the general idea of being trapped or isolated, but very few of these things actually come across in the final design. (It also might have some bondage/bdsm inspiration, but I'm not sure how intentional that is.)

Firstly, the bodysuit isn't well executed here, and is complicated by the fact that it appears to also be booty shorts with matching leggings?? but they're all the same thickness?? This is confusing and goofy, and would look much better split into an actual top/pants combo. Additionally, the stripes add further confusion and lack the appeal of Loki's stripes, who I presume they're trying to tie-in/invoke with them; their diagonal direction certainly doesn't help. To fix this, I would keep the stripes on the top, but have them run up and down, and simplify the pants to solid black with blue piping along the sides. I think this separate top with the straight stripes would also do a better job of communicating a straight jacket than the current costume does.

Another major gripe I have with this outfit is the hems, but especially the pant hems. They're what I can only describe as boot cut and its awful; I grew up with the 2000s boot-cut obsession, and they don't look good on anyone except horsegirls who wear actual cowboy boots underneath them. I understand the frayed pant and sleeve hems are supposed to look unkempt and villainous, but it mostly just looks like he's walked on them. To solve this, I would effectively cover them up by adding armor; extend the boots and claws and give him actual grieves and arm guards to make him look more dangerous, sharp, and combat oriented, and invoke the knight aesthetic to clash with the detective prince persona and its white, ornamental style.

Adding additional armor also helps solve the problem of him looking so top heavy. This costume's huge neck guard and mask are super bulky and make you feel like he's about to break his neck; by adding weight to the legs, its no long all concentrated at his head. If you compare it to actual helmets, I think its roughly based off of the frogmouth helmet, which has one, continuous neck piece like the black masks. I would adapt it to look more like a closed helmet or a armet, which have a similar shape but much clearer plating and hinges and thus appear less stiff and might have better mobility.

My last major gripe is the cape, because it is SUCH a wasted opportunity. The torn fabric, while matching his frayed hems, is so boring; a cape made out of feathers would convey the crow idea so much better, and give him a sort of dark knight fantasy vibe that would look wonderful imo. You could even show the iridescence of the feathers, which would tie well into the black-grey-blue palette excellently. Im thinking something like the cape below, or possibly like the crowfeather set from bloodborne if you want some extra drama.

As for the belt, I'm fairly neutral on them; I could take or leave them really. You could remove them if you wanted to simplify the design, or keep them if you wanted an edgier look or to incorporate more bdsm elements, but in that case I would change them to look more like actual bondage belts and not, you know, normal pants belts.

Overall, when ranking these outfits for my powerpoint, I gave this one dead last placement and a solid 2/10 personal ranking.

 Right, I may get some heat for this, but here we go. MAJOR SPOILERS OF CHOT AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION

As someone who had been waiting for this book for TWO YEARS, my main take away is that Chain of thorns ended being an utter disappointment. As a former fan of Game of thrones, and other fans will get my meaning, I say this book gives me season 8 vibes: a ludicrous and incomplete conclusion to something that could’ve been epic, marinated on wasted potential.The thing is, we KNOW everything will turn out alright with the world at the end and the villains will fail, after all, this is a prequel on a ya series.We know that many of those characters are the ancestors of the TMI and TDA gangs, BUT that does not mean it couldn’t have been a very enjoyable story that leaves you at the edge of your seat, for we would get to see HOW things came to be

What bothers me the most is how Daisy’s protagonism was stolen, and that’s a first for a cc lead.

Its hinted several times in TDA that Cordelia was a hero whose name shadowhunter history would never forget.She was the sword that stood between evil and the world, saving it from doom on a byegone era... but she kinda didn’t? I shit you not, Cordelia’s greatest features on this book were to kill Tatiana (seriously?) and bang james on a tub.And that’s all.And if anyone had to kill tatiana at all, that person should be grace, it would be a great end to her arc of abuse, but that’s beside the point here

All the build up of “we must get cordelia in there so she can vanquish belial and end this’’ was for literally NOTHING.

After so many people either doubting her, or saying she was their only hope, after spending most of the book not fighting and staying on the sidelines because of the paladin busyness (and making some unhinged decisions along the way), she doesn’t fight Belial AT ALL. WHAT? If she had stabbed james, would it be cohf 2.0? well yes, but it still would’ve been better than james going “time for suicide mission lololol” and driving cortana to his chest.And the healing blade? where did that come from? That was such a cheap way for him to not die

The trip to Edom was for literally nothing.Sure, it brought her and lucie closer after the strain on their friendship,but that doesn’t require a trip to Edom, they could’ve just talked and sorted out their shit

Kit’s death was ridiculous and UNmourned. Tatiana, who has no training whatsoever, killed him throwing a poisoned dagger on his shoulder. Nevermind that In book one this boy survived an also poisoned gash that ripped his torso open. Who remembers that anyway? Its not absurd at all.

Point being that if youre going to kill him, do it with dignity and give weight to it.We don’t see his funeral, we don’t see the adults finding it out, nor his parents and henry mourning, we barely see the tlh gang mourning.Jem was throughly mourned, AND HE DIDN’T EVEN DIE.Kit’s death was the literary equivalent of the Loki meme “yes very sad, anyway”  

On the topics of things we didn’t see, I’m livid that there was so much page time wasted on that senseless love triangle THAT EVERYBODY KNEW WOULD AMOUNT TO PRECIOUS NOTHING, and many important things were either told, or left open.I just wish this love triangle had never happened and Cordelia and matt had remained platonic friends. Give matthew another love interest or none at all, he and james already had enough problems to work through as it was 

 They could’ve left for france together as just friends you know. They could’ve even kissed on the basis of “why the fuck not? we are both pining and everything already went to shit anyway”, but then realized it was a mistake and let’s leave it at that.Also it came to a point where the romantic stalling of the minor couples was just too much, it felt like page filler instead of the true conflict resolution they needed to set things right and be together.I was reading all that and wondering “all right, but where’s the actual plot?” 

the explanation for the family tree was ridiculous.I would prefer some “when the city of bones fell, we lost an awful lot of data, and thats why all the documentation of the period is messed up”

The whole conflict of the clave finding out about Jesse’s identity was resolved too easily at the end

Matthew coming clean to his parents and charlotte being pregnant again was such a big and anticipated moment, and yet all we get is Cordelia telling us what james told her

Charles comes out in front of everyone and we dont see that 

Will and tessa cry thinking their kids are gonna die and we dont see that

Thomas’ come out was a bit better, but it was still telling rather than showing

dont get me started on the plot holes.Im pretty sure cc said we would see james get more powers, but all we got was the as old as time cliche of protagonists losing their powers, and that didnt make a slight of sense.They automatically lose their powers after belial “dies”, while tessa remains very much a warlock and a shapeshifter? Make it make sense. Those powers come first and foremost from Tessa, Belial dying doesnt alter the demonic blood on their veins

The cherry on the top of a long list of absurdities, to me, are the watchers. Anyone can correct me if Im wrong, but how in the world there were so many dead silent brothers and iron sisters? it doesnt add up, there should be some of them, but not enough to flood dozens of shadowhunters on their own.The nephilim only have a thousand years of existence, (magnus said more than once that he has met warlocks who had been born before the first shadowhunter was created) and those folks not only live absurdly long lives, but tend to die of natural causes.Jem lived for over a century as a silent brother and aged only two years.It doesnt add up

also am I missing something, or how matthew, thomas and alastair escaped the massive statues was completely brushed over?

Today I’ve seen not one but a number of posts about Mobius’ possible death/sacrifice by the end of s2. (Here a great analysis of Mobius arc by @kiteblue42 part 1 and part 2)

And on one hand I kinda see it too. Like, explanations and analysis make sense, totally. Frighteningly so. I love Mobius and I want no one else in this role but Owen Wilson. He’s brilliant, funny and consistent. He’s also very handsome but it’s not my point

But on the other, when something slowly becomes obvious to a part of viewers, will it really happen?

I mean, for example, the time loop stuff is very on the nose. We don’t need any deep symbolism or details to pick that up. By 2023 everybody has seen a bunch (or at least a couple) of beautifully developed time travel stories with all sorts of outcomes and combinations, paradoxes and ways of t-travelling. Will a time loop happen? I guess so. it has to, otherwise it would be impossible to save Loki in s2e1. But since we already know a certain part of what happens, it would make sense to have a twist that no one (or only very few) could think about. Something that will make this particular time travel story memorable, and worth viewers’ anticipation and time.

Timely’s connection or becoming HWR has been also pointed out. This one is a bit less easy to see. But there are still plans for Kang’s dynasty phase, regardless of Majors being recast or not, and they will have to do an explanation, so the movies can be watched separately from the series and still make sense. What I mean is, they might postpone confirming/debunking this bit till later in the current mcu phase, so Timely might stay Timely till the end of s2.

Mobius’s death theme is even more subtle. Here you have to dig and ponder a bit. But his thinking about problems at hand and enjoying small things on the go kinda give the vibe of someone who lives fast. Or is it just me? He doesn’t wear protective gear (he did once during Roxxcart mission in s1e2) and is so vulnerable but evades danger. For how long? Will there be a heart breaking scene where Loki tries to save Sylvie and Mobius at the same time and has to make an impossible choice? Let me grab some cracker jacks 🍿

In s1e4 he is pruned but is actually alive in the void, in s2e1 he survives the Loom experience (purely by chance at that point), so viewers would (intuitively) think, he had fatal adventures, survived and now he’s invincible to all harm by the laws of cinema. But, when he put on that chunky suit and it had a crack in the visor, and all of it was made basically into a joke, I thought to myself, also jokingly, well, that’s it, Mobius has been marked by death but is temporarily healed with a piece of duct tape; now just wait till the duct tape falls off!

So I just watched Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. (Rented from Redbox)

It was good and I really liked it. If I could just change one thing it would be this. Spoilers I guess but it’s been out on DVD for a bit.

I think it would’ve been hilarious, if at some point there something like this happened….I’m not sure where, but somewhere before something ridiculous happens, like when Doric changed into the owlbear and smashed Sofina around. There’s a zoom in on Doric and she says, “I Hulk Smash Sofina into the ground.” and there’s just a disembodied voice that says, “pardon?”

Cut Away gag. 5 random big name actors sit around the table, I’m talking like Ryan Reynolds, Matt Damon, Natasha Lyonne, Anne Hawthaway and like Brad Pitt are sitting around a table. (Sort of think how in the later Thor movies Matt Damon is playing the actor playing Loki just cause cameos. Pick and choose who it is but I really like especially Ryan and Natasha as I think they’d both have fun)

Natasha: “what? I grab Sofina and just smash her into the ground repeatedly like Hulk did to Loki in Avengers.

Ryan (who I picture is playing Ed): “that would be funny”

Brad (disgruntled DM) “don’t encourage her, by the Anne roll a D20”

Cuts back to the credits but you continue hearing them in the background instead of music for another 90 seconds trying to find a date. The music fades back in before one is decided.

I just think it would have been really funny. I get that in the middle of the movie it might take away from the whole one dying and the sacrifice Ed makes for choosing not to revive is wife and reviving Holga instead (which by the way got major Onward vibes from that. The whole “I never had a dad but I always had you.” Sort of being Kira never had a mom but always had Holga) if we know they aren’t real, but I really feel it would have really made it a D&D movie having actual dice gags and the whole not being able to plan a session.

Anyways, good fun movie. Might buy it so I can watch it again. I could totally see in the movie parts that were totally crit fail and successes.

I’m thinking seeing the trailers made me really finalize wanting to play it. I do a small campaign with one other person who plays a character and DMs and we have a lot of fun.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. But that’s what I thought.

Rolling in super late without Starbucks (I didn't get a Disney+ subscription until the new Doctor Who specials came out on it, and didn't care enough to try and figure out how to sail the high seas while dodging The Mouse), but I just finished watching "Loki."

I'm gonna have to probably sit with the ending for a bit to figure out how I feel about it (I did get spoiled by The Internet on how it ends for Loki and how his ending outfit is heavily based on historic Norse outfits, up to and including the shoes) though I didn't have context for it until *checks watch* 45 minutes ago).

However, I loved all the production design, from sets to props to costumes, especially as regards the TVA and its nebulous mid-20th century vibe, but also in all the other eras that showed up, however briefly. I loved how, aside from the 1st episode infodump, it didn't require having watched twelve movies and five TV shows, which I feel is more and more the vibe of the MCU, falling into the same trap that led me to give up on superhero comics. And I loved how the effects were in service of the story, rather than feeling like the story was working around a sort of vague direction of "Do A Thing That Has Twelve Zillion Special Effects Because That'll Be Cool."

And the cast! My gosh. So many extraordinarily good actors. Special shout-out to having two Black women as important characters, which gave them room to be people rather than The Black Woman. (Jonathan Majors was very good from an acting standpoint as the two characters he played, but Big Yikes based on revelations that have come out since the show first aired)

Anyway. Not regretting any of the time I spent watching it, highly recommend.

I don’t know about you guys but the song “Church” by Fall Out Boy is giving me major Loki vibes - from both sides. It fits for Loki as the worshipper but also as the deity being worshipped.

I’ve spent the past two hours writing something for one of the scenarios and I will post it later tonight once it’s done. The other scenario is already being planned. Oops.

Sooooo many. Tbh ive really only watched through episode 1- I ended up traveling and ive been all over so i plan to binge and catch up this weekend. I’m in the air on a plane as we speak and nobody is gonna be thrilled with me full body reacting to a TV show haha.

HOWEVER: and, spoilers for s2 episode 1 below the line…

What the FUCK do they mean PULLED OUT OF THE TIMELINE????

Like, maybe we get more in the next episodes so imma have to watch and dont tell me- but like, in a major way Loki is a catalyst for the ENTIRE Avengers plot line- from Avengers 1 all the way to End Game.

Ripping him from the timeline fucks so many things up so like…

I mean, the Loki we know in this particular timeline already had his timeline re-set, so his timeline doesnt exist anymore. So like… what are we pulling him from??? Are we pulling him from other timelines??? Are we pulling him from his own timeline??? Does he not really exist anymore??? Is he just one of the TVA like the others??? How did the TVA not know they were doing this if they knew the loom was there all along???? Side note- that’s not a time loom, it’s a time spindle. Like not to get all fiber nerd about it but, it’s combining a bunch of small fibers into one thread. That is a spindle. But also the design is super cool. Also, i know we’re not going to get this, but i kinda want this whole season to be them setting up all the things required to get loki out of that episode 1 alive, you know? Like, learning how to manage the timelines like Kang does. Maybe we will get that later down the line (again, im behind) but like… im so curious. We have waited so long and i need to sit with my TV and my dogs and VIBE for hours.

Hopefully it’ll help me get back to writing too. I’ve been just…. Terrible as of late…. And im so exhausted to the point where (not to be dramatic) ive just felt like i dont even believe human kindness anymore. That in this world you have to fight to the death because no one will ever give you an inch unless you wrestle it from their hands.

Just got back from seeing Quantumania

I have a few thoughts, but beware spoilers ahead!

I really quite enjoyed that.  A fun movie, even if previous MCU films have trained me into being surprised when a film is less than 2 hours long! XD

Scott Lang is still just such a ray of sunshine. :)  

I thought it was interesting how this story parallels the Loki series reasonably closely.  In that we’re meeting another version of Kang that is trying to stop other versions of Kang.  I’m assuming from the mid-credits scene that this Kang was speaking truthfully when warning about the other versions of himself, although I definitely get an unreliable narrator vibe from all of this.  Which version is telling the truth?  Does this version actually have the full picture? How does our hero judge who is telling the truth?  Loki was leaning more to at least giving consideration to the possibility that TVA Kang might be telling the truth, whereas Janet didn’t seem to have understood the context from the images she saw in Kang’s mind (assuming of course his story is the truth).  And by the time they met in this film she is not willing to trust him or listen to him at all. I thought Scott’s moment of ‘omg what have I done!’ nope, nope, don’t overthink it’ was nicely done.

And then the end credits scene.  I love that they treated Loki deadly seriously. Yes! *fist pump* In that tiny snippet it was Mobius who was playing the lighter notes. It carries over that intense feeling of fear and dread from the last moments of Season 1 where Loki sees the Kang sculptures in the other version of the TVA. Seeing Loki genuinely scared of Kang makes it hit home the threat they’re facing.  And for me it also puts Loki on a par with the events of this film. Like if that scene was a short humorous gag then it would reinforce the separation of the TV series Loki from the main films for me, so I really like that that wasn’t the case. I know, I know, let a girl dream. 

It also raises questions, although not particularly new ones I suppose, but which version of Mobius is this?  Did Loki manage to form a friendship with another Mobius? Is this actually a clip from season 2, or just something for this film? If it is from season 2 then... agh! Loki in Victorian clothes!!!!!!!!!! *sirens blaring* my period clothing lover is high fiving my Loki lover.  I am also absolutely up for some time spent watching a terrified Loki try and convince a blasé and oblivious Mobius about the threat Kang faces.  (Time travellers and people with dire foreknowledge of events trying desperately to convince others of the coming danger is definitely a favourite trope of mine.)

Also, Jonathan Majors was great.  I like this slightly sad version of Kang. Like he has just seen so much but it won’t stop him from doing what he needs to do.  Definitely much more engaging to me than Thanos. 

So, yeah, slightly more excited about Season 2 of the Loki series - resigned to the fact I’ll need to mine it for the bits I like, but feeling a little more confident that there will be at least some. And definitely liking how they’re building up Kang as a character.

today by q — sounds like it came straight from the 80s. strictly a good vibes song. really good for night drives imo.

runnin' by the pharcyde — arguably my favourite 90s rap group out there. labcabincalifornia is such a good album but this (and drop) are for sure my faves. also, if you like music videos definitely watch the mv for drop because it's so good and was actually directed by spike jonze!

suicide doors by blk odyssy — blk vintage: the reprise is another really good album but this song is definitely my fave.

sympathy by too close to touch — a little change in genre from the others but oh my GOD. this song hits me in the feels and the vocals are just so good. as a pop punk kid growing up this really feeds my teenage soul. <3

the summoning by sleep token — THIS FUCKING SONG HAS HAD ME IN SUCH A CHOKEHOLD it's literally the sexiest thing i've ever heard, like genuinely the last minute and a half makes me feral and i stg sleep token will most likely be my top listened to artist on spotify this year because of it.

i'm also gonna rec some loki songs; all of which can be found on this playlist because i'm a whore and whenever i find songs that remind me of him at all i throw them on there.

sexy villain by remi wolf — pretty self explanatory, hehe.

time moves slow by badbadnotgood & sam herring — this is the song that started the playlist. mostly it just reminds me of how loki's constantly leaving; opting for a life of solitude, and ultimately how much harder it gets each time he disappears. originally it was the inspiration for a tva!reader x loki fic that had some major severance vibes i had going but like always i got distracted and switched projects.

they don't want by electric wire hustle — when i tell you this song is MY loki song, i mean it. i swear, just listen to the lyrics and you'll get it.

trouble by cage the elephant — another self explanatory one. loki's always getting into trouble.

laughing on the outside by bernadette caroll — as someone who's obsessed with movie/tv scores, my dream is that one day marvel uses this song for loki.
