I’ve been rereading the current anime arc in the manga, and finally got to The Apology™️, and I wondered what words Katsuki used before translation.

Disclaimer: I’m sure others must have posted about this before but I couldn’t recall reading it myself. I do remember there was a lot of talk about the way he used “gomen” as the Japanese fandom were saying how cute and childlike it sounded, so I thought I’d see if there was anything else interesting there.

Oh, my sweet sweet baby boy…

So, just before he says ‘Sorry for everything’ (ima made gomen), he says:

言ってどうにかなるもんじゃねェけど

本音だ

出久

“Itte dōnika naru mon ja nē kedo… Honne da…Izuku”

Which in the English translation, gave us:

And “speak my truth” is lovely and all, but the word from the original that stuck out for me was ‘honne’.

I’m not sure how familiar most people are with honne–tatemae (I only know about it because I go way way too in-depth when researching for my fics lol), but it’s a concept that every Japanese person is deeply aware of, and underpins much of their society.

Here’s the Wikipedia intro:

Ohhh, that is some extra juicy context for Kacchan’s speech. Essentially, he is saying that everything up until now has been his tatemae, a public façade to protect his own position (strong, powerful hero etc), but that he can’t keep that up and he wants Izuku to see his honne, his true, private self.

Excuse me while I melt from the cuteness.

But WAIT! There’s more!

How much do you know about second-person pronouns in Japanese? (Nope, this isn’t about ‘kare’ again this time hehe).

You’ve probably noticed in the anime that Kacchan says “Temee” a lot, and you may have also noticed that it tends to get translated as cursing. So it actually just means ‘you,’ but like a really rude way of saying it, such that the only way of reflecting that in English is to replace ‘you’ with something like Bastard or Asshole.

This and the below are from a very excellent article about second-person pronouns and how they are used for context and drama in anime specifically. I’d recommend reading it as the context is really interesting!

So although pronouns aren’t actually commonly used or necessary in much spoken Japanese, when they are used, it’s a deliberate way to tell you about the relationship dynamic between two characters.

But why, you may ask, am I talking about pronouns again?!

Because, dear friends, throughout the first half of his speech, Kacchan uses ‘temee’ as usual to describe his past with Izuku. I’ve highlighted it below, and pls also note the shaky speech bubble showing his nerves during the ‘honne’ section. 🥺

HOWEVER, straight after he says he wants Izuku to see his Honne, Katsuki switches pronouns from ‘Temee’ (v rude), to ‘Omae’ (very casual/familiar). Below is the page after the apology.

Considering we now know pronouns are not necessary to convey meaning, that’s a hell of a lot of omaes on one page!! Boy cannot get enough of saying it.

If you want more about the different pronouns, see below for a helpful table of common uses for both. And please indulge my shippy heart for highlighting the second usage (but, like ‘kare’, you never know)…

Katsuki is showing Izuku immediately and repeatedly that this is who he wants to be to him and how he wants the world to see them. His honne, his inner desire, is to be close to Izuku, to treat him as an equal.

He’s not just saying sorry, he’s showing that—at least from his perspective—things are going to be different from now on. But, like, also, that this was how he felt about him in private the whole time?! GAHHHH.

So there you go, the apology that was already a massive turning point in their story/relationship was actually even deeper and more beautiful than we all thought. Yet again, Japanese conveys nuance and intention far beyond what can be translated. 😭💕

Hey we just got the Disventure Camp All Stars Intro!

It was so good and they improved so much when it comes to animating the scenes :D

Let’s see what we found..

- So it starts off with Emily pushing off Oliver, Marcus and Nina. So by that I’m guessing that Emily is going to be an antagonist, she doesn’t seems very nice. And will probably cause more drama between the contestants.

- And JAMES AND LAKE LETS GO!! These two seem to get along pretty well. I reckon Aiden, James and Lake are going to be a power trio like Hunter, Ally and Tess last season.

- Speaking of Hunter and Ally, I think they might’ve had an issue that happened before the season started. They also could’ve started dating are now becoming extremely toxic and hostile towards each other. And they must be really loud for Fiore to making them to shut up.

- Also I reckon that Fiore and Alec’s arguments and issues haven’t been resolved, from this photo I predict that he’s just telling her all the things that make her a “mistake”, and I don’t think Fiore cares just by seeing the look on her face

- Miriam is on the look out immediately, considering that she was the winner of season 1, and her age. She’s probably thinking that people are going to target her, (which I don’t blame her for) and is probably looking for an immunity totem. I don’t think she’ll make it far though.

- Now the 2 antagonists, Yul and Grett. From the poster of Grett we can already tell that this will discuss weight loss, and her happiness and stuff. This relationship will most likely be toxic since well, Yul’s in this relationship. It’s either that Yul forced her to lose weight to keep dating her or Grett did it for her own happiness and Yul and Grett are actually a good couple, (though I doubt it.) Most likely, Yul will probably use Grett to get further in the game.

- The look on Jake’s face! I really hope he gets a redemption arc this season and makes it far this time, I thought Aiden and Jake would be friends but from this intro I really don’t think so anymore, hopefully I’m wrong? Anyway, seems like Tom and Aiden become friends, although I don’t think Tom and Aiden will start dating considering Aiden already has a good boyfriend. And by Ashley’s concerned face (not this photo), I reckon she’ll try and help Jake from getting jealous.

- We got a new trio!! And Ellie and Gabby! I never thought that Tess would be into painting, but it would be great for these three to get along this season. Especially away from the Ally and Hunter drama.

- Also the way James looks at Aiden!! So cute, also since when were Aiden’s eyes so round?? It looks different, or is it just me?

- And the season 1 cast! I think Jake is going to have some insecurity issues about Tom, considering that his trust has been broken many times. But I hope that Ashley and Miriam would help them (especially Jake) to be a better couple ❤️

- Connor and Riya being center stage! I bet they’re the main couple, I think over the time before the season Riya got famous and became rich, although from this shot she seems to be fame hungry or whatever you call it.

- Also James and Aiden are holding hands! I love them, Ellie and Gabby have their usual stare and stuff, and Grett and Yul as a couple too.

No thoughts, Head empty. Just them🥰💖

I once had a bizarre shipping era that consisted of these two💀🗿👩🏽‍🦯 I wholeheartedly and unironically loved this ship for the longest time and idek why😭 this was years ago but the feeling still remains strong in my mind whenever I’m reminded of it😂 anyway, I decided to sketch them and I was actually just gonna leave this as a flat color drawing but went overboard as you can see. I also strongly believe Rukia thrives on workplace romance/drama. Couldn’t tell you why but she just gives that vibe.

There was also a time where I scoured the internet for fics of these two and there actually was some fics, I think there might actually be some recent ones too which surprised me when I was making this and decided to find some. They’re also written by the same authors too which I find hilarious and painful for my shipping heart. I feel like Yachiru would be a complete goober in any type of situation involving the two, even more so when she sees Hanataro being a shy clutz.

I loved Zaraki when he came into the story but overall hate how much of a molerat his spiky hair style makes him look.💀😭it was such a pain to draw and it still doesn’t even look right but oh well. Love that he gets to let that mane down someways later on in the story, which I haven’t gotten to. I left off on the climax of the Aizen arc💀 I really want to make more bleach art but the characters designs are a bit more complex than I’m used to which is why they take me so much time. I’ve had two UlqHime pieces in my drafts for yrs and I don’t think I’ll ever get to finish them🗿

Anyways Hanataro has been a favorite of mine ever since his intro and with the way he helped Rukia cemented his place in my fav list. He’s such a cute goober.😤💖

(Justice in the Dark / Guang Yuan / Mo Du Live Action first impression…)

I was planning to wait for more episodes to air before binging but alas my self-control is non-existent so I’ve watched all 8 eps that are out. Disclaimer, I only listened to the audio drama and haven’t read the novel yet which I hope to correct sometime in the future. And obviously these are my own personal opinions.

Pros

Good acting! Good chemistry between main cast!

I like the aesthetics! (and I know nothing about cinematography etc. but I have nothing bad to say about this aspect)

Is following the original plot MUCH closer than I expected!

Lang Qiao (now Lan Qiao)! I love her.

Tao Ran (now Tao Ze)! Cute!

Cons…?

So that whole thing about genetic predisposition for crime…when that intro popped up, I was like “oh NO” buuut so far, I think I see what they’re trying to do with that and hope they can pull it off well.

The name changes. I guess it was for c*nsorship reasons that I don’t fully understand. I’m conflicted about this but it’s not preventing me from enjoying the show.

Weird inconsistent audio quality, i.e., you can hear when they dubbed over some parts and there is an obvious change between one line and the next. Not uncommon in cdramas but ugh. Though I do appreciate the main actors using their own voices.

So far, I like the dynamic between the main pair. However, I am not feeling any romantic chemistry and don’t feel any urge to ship them. Will have to wait and see if this changes as their relationship also develops.

Yeah, so I saw mostly negative reactions from both the EN and CN fandoms which is not surprising. After watching, I hope minds are changed? People were joking/complaining about it turning into a “sci-fi” but this is not the case?? There are no sci-fi elements…unless I’m missing something… It’s just that they’ve done that AU thing a la Guardian but it’s much more innocuous than Guardian’s fantasy to sci-fi lol.

And the name change thing… On one side, you might consider this disrespectful to the author and original material. On the other hand, if novel fans prefer more separation between the novel and drama, this may be a good thing? Like if someone says Pei Su and Luo Weizhao, you know they’re talking about the drama and not the novel. Tbh I see the benefit of that, especially if there are some more major changes in plot later on…

Anyway, I hope the drama can keep up a good quality so I can enjoy it as a crime mystery show, at the very least. It probably helps that I have low expectations for the romance aspects so I will just wait and see how far they will go with that.

TOTAL DRAMA REVIVAL TIERLIST + THOUGHTS

After binging all of the new season, I've updated my initial tierlist! Priya stays winning, no surprise there. Thoughts about the ENTIRETY of the new cast (with spoilers) under the cut!

Let's just start off by saying that the over the top toilet humor and intro aside, this was a great season. While Pakhitew Island was rancid with blatant obvious character tropes, this season managed to make most of their characters relatable while parodying at it.

But as for Caleb, Scary Girl and Ripper... Those were on the nose too much for my liking. Caleb got the season 1 Justin treatment, Scary Girl is literally Jinx from League of Legends, and Ripper is nothing but a shoehorned character for fart jokes. It sucks because I thought Ripper was going to be great. His personality is pretty solid and reminds me loads of McArthur.

Now that I've got the slog out of the way, time to dissect the more intriguing parts of this show!

Nichelle, Damien and Axel were tremendously robbed this season, and you know it.

Axel's dexterity and agility would have no doubt gotten her far. Unfortunately, her prickly attitude got her booted very early, akin to Eva's elimination back in the original TDI. She's definitely the Shawn of this generation though. And hey, which begs the question — is she his kid? It's been 15 years after all...

Nichelle was nothing like the mean girl label everyone pegged her for. Just a typical rich, famous celebrity that's never been out of her comfort zone. Rude and vicious? No, she had the team spirit and was always ready to pump up her team. I love Dakota, so I am definitely a fan of Nichelle, the two being so alike. In her elimination episode, she had a breakdown where she realized that she wasn't "all that". It was honestly pretty sad to see.

Damien was the person with the most common sense on that show. It's funny how he's just wants the million bucks and never seen the show before. But when he sees what there's up against? He's totally done. FINALLY, A CHARACTER THAT GETS IT. He's a whole vibe. In the end, he decided he wanted to stay after he did some awesome heroics, but his team voted him off like he wanted... Better luck next time.

Speaking of next time, apparently these three do have another shot. They've all been invited back for another season, which means that we can explore these characters far more! Let's hope that the writers do not miss this opportunity.

As for someone that I don't think overstayed their welcome, MK definitely takes the cake. She was honestly a great character with witty comebacks and superior intellect. I think she got just the right amount of screen time. We got to see her in action while making room for other character's developments to shine. Nice.

Wayne and Raj are what happens when you combine Katie and Sadie with Geoff and Brody. I found their bromance pretty sweet actually. I don't think they had much time to grow more distinctively from each other though. And I know how everyone was betting their money on them or Caleb/Bowie as the gay couple, but I'm so so glad that they weren't.

Instead we got a delightfully surprising pair — Bowie and Raj. While I did want to see more build up, with 13 twenty minute episodes, you can't really do much. But no matter, I still thought they were plenty cute! I needed to see them smooch in the finale though. It would've been loads better than...

Chase and Emma.

How this pair irks me to no end. Chase is an incel and Emma is stupid for going back to him. Really hit the nail on the head with the on and off again couples of the world. Seen this way too often.

Speaking of which, I think you all owe RR Emma an apology. Because RR Emma actually had loads more character outside of her boyfriend. We got to see her in action, taking charge, her fiesty attitude, the great dynamic with her sister!

But this Emma? All she did was whine nonstop about how Chase was a horrible boyfriend only to go back to square one. Every second of her on screen was either her wanting to torture him in the best way possible or lusting after him. Girl... After everything Chase's done to you, him granting you immunity in a round does not cut it.

I'll give some points for the Bowie/Emma friendship. Except for the fact that it centered around Chase mostly, UGH. Bowie going "ew straight people" is how I felt about this whole ordeal.

And in case it wasn't obvious enough, Chase deserves to be ejected into sun. He radiates toxic masculinity. He wanted to change Emma's name to "Chase's Girlfriend"? He thought a guy should win the finale? He can't take no for an answer and keeps pursuing his ex? I hope he rots, ew.

Bless Zee's heart for being bros with him. Goodness knows I could not do that. But let's face it, Zee is bros with everyone on this island. He's that stoner friend everyone needs. Just chilling, making some unintentional funny comments, you get the gist. I first pegged him to be the scaredy cat type, but seeing him in the zone instead was hilarious. And he's the amputee! How cool is that?

Now I know I haven't talked about one of the best parts of Total Drama — the villains/antagonists.

Julia was a very fun twist villain. At first, she was just Dawn but if she was a social media brat. I was surprised to see that facade crack and her true colors shine. Instead, she's a two faced teenaged girl, which I see a lot in society. Putting on a show for others only to bash them in private. Watching her let loose was a thrill and I was here for it. Her manipulation, scheming and determination is unmatched.

At least, that's what I would say if Bowie didn't exist.

How Bowie absolutely dominated that competition. He was here to win and he meant it. Seeing him pull the strings was a sight to behold. He convinced the team to vote off Caleb at first glance, outsmarted Julia at her own game, ruined Priya and Millie's friendship, and snagged a pretty cute boyfriend too. If that's not absolute winner things, I don't know what is.

Which brings me to the part I've been waiting for. Last, but certainly not least of all, Priya and Millie.

These two are MY Total Drama inserts, I'm so sure of it. Millie disgusted by her own generation and Priya's obedience to follow her parent's dreams were things I felt in my soul. I know that they weren't popular when the characters were first leaked, but I'm so glad that they beat the early boot allegations.

Millie's character arc is one of the best things of the season. She came here to write a book slandering the people her age and thought of herself as above everyone else's nonsense. But then Priya happened. Priya was nice to her, she was the first real person to ever make Millie feel good about herself. And that was the wake up call Millie needed and the turning point of her life.

Priya also learned something too — self worth. She was too eager to be friends with Millie off the bat and have nothing but good energy all around. Only to realize that maybe she's putting more effort into their friendship than the other person is. And as someone whose been in that position multiple times, it absolutely broke me.

And everything went to hell when Bowie gifted Priya the notepad in which Millie was writing smack about everyone. Of course, Millie had changed her mind and was trying to be a better person, but karma catches up to you. Priya finally let herself be gulfed in anger and Millie truly got hit with the great significance of Priya coming into her life.

In the end, Millie managed to apologize and pour her insecurities out to Priya about everything. It brought both tears to me and Priya and the two of them reconciled. This was the best friendship story I've ever seen written on Total Drama. It's like what Gwen and Courtney could've gone through in All Stars...

Also, Priya wins. How cool is that? I rooted for her at the very start AND SHE WON. I'm loving this so so much. I'm sure there's another alternative ending where it's Bowie but the one I watched was Priya so that's the true happy ending to me :3

Sidenote: Anyone wanna talk about the Priya/Damien ship tease? Honestly I'm glad Priya didn't blush at anything Chase said; I know the fandom thought they were going to be a couple. But the best girl Priya and the best boy Damien had a hint and that's another win for me.

Think about it, a girl who's prepared for Total Drama all her life with someone who's never seen it before? GOLD. They were even paired for the finale! Do you think next season will have them be a couple? Manifesting that so bad with a real Chase/Emma breakup. And more Raj/Bowie while we're at it too, yeah?

Opposite of drama ask: what's something you've been really loving recently?

I JUST FINISHED UNBELIEVABLE GWENPOOL AND I LOVE HER! Like I already related to her because of the aroace thing and she's a nerd but now there's also the theatre trauma and the whole thing being such a love letter to the longevity of comics was amazing and Gurihiru is so fucking good at art.

And I read Do a Powerbomb and I love that, the art is fantastic and I'm not much of a wrestling person but you can tell how much love for wrestling goes into it. Daniel Warren Johnson really is just so fucking good at what he does.

And the trailed for the Dungeon Meshi anime just released and it looks awesome and it made me want to get back to reading the manga!

And I finished Castlevania Nocturne and I can't rave too much because it's still so close to spoilers but I fucking love Annette and Drolta was so fucking cool.

And I just finished season 1 of Adventure Time yesterday so I'm past the bump people talk about but it was still a fun ride.

Also Spy X Family is coming back soon and we're coming up on some of my favourite Yor content before I stopped reading so I'm real excited about that. And that intro is so cute!

And I'm nowhere near caught up on One Piece (just the dub) but I've been loving seeing all the Gear 5 animations that I've been coming across.

Oh and! Candela Obscura has been so much fun! I mean "fun" because it's horror but The Circle of Needle and Thread has been so dramatic and everyone's doing such an amazing job of pulling you in to that trauma.

And! I started reading Blade Maidens, it's a web series about a queer adventuring party and there's not a lot of it yet but the characters are all great and the art is fucking amazing.

I'm also really enjoying these quick really simple doodles I've been doing, just paring things down to simple shapes and letting the cartooning do most of the work instead of rendering. I'm glad people seem to be enjoying them because it's a lot of fun.

I think that's all the recent stuff.

And I read you like Tenko -my bi queen- can I take a Tenko analysis before I go watch total drama Z?

And well I guess we quite get along well, I'm happy about it. Autistic to autistic communication ig? Lol

Yesss! A fellow Bi Tenko headcanoner! I am pro headcanon whatever the fuck you want, but the fact that lesbian Tenko is the popular headcanon disappoints me because it is the most shallow way to read Tenko. "She hates men because she's a lesbian" is boring. I want to hypothesize a different explanation, because why take her at her word when you can overanalyze her so much. It got long, so I put it under a readmore. By long, I mean 2000 words. Honestly, I might crosspost this to ao3 later, since I legit love this.

The love hotel is dubiously canon at best, but ideas from it are shown in her FTEs and character development in chapter three, so I do think it works for me. That being said, if you are part of the fans that hate it I do get why.

Elephant in the room for a lot of my thoughts on Tenko... I think she was abused by her master. I actually have a lot more evidence than the Kiyo was a victim of abuse headcanon, which I also subscribe to!

She shows a lot of symptoms of abuse that were played for laughs. In her intro we get the line:

"If any degenerate tries to touch me, my reflex is to grab them and throw them across the room."

That could just be because shes an Aikido master, but it paints a very disturbing picture with the rest of the context.

In her first FTE with Kaede, we get the line "Master told me degenerate males always have perverted fantasies running through their heads!"

So her master is intentionally telling her bad things about men. He must know about her sexism. He probably even encourages it!

In the same FTE, when she talks about attacking Shuichi, she describes it as "pre-emptive self-defense" small problem, wouldn't it be pre-emptive defense of others? It was brought up in the context of protecting Kaede. Honestly, I really wish I knew Japanese so I could see the original text for this line.

I don't think it was the first time she used this logic/excuse.

There's Tenko's repeated insistence to Kaede that she doesn't consider herself cute reeks of low self esteem. If her Aikido master was like a surrogate parent to her, shouldn't he have caught on to this negative self talk? Should he have told her she was cute, since she's basically his daughter.

If you tell her that her passion is her secret weapon, we get the line "My passionate energy, huh? I have been told that it gives people headaches!" Her parents haven't been in the picture from a young age, so who would be telling her this?

Onto Shuichi's FTEs, we get this line after Tenko attempts to provoke him by growling. "Give me a reaction already! I don't know what else to do!" She acts out for attention, and will thrive on negative attention and positive attention all the same. Remember that. Its not related to my Tenko abuse theory/headcanon, but its interesting that someone who thrives off other's reactions to her falls for the least emotive character.

(I don't think she's as oblivious with Himiko as she wants us to think. I think, on some level, she knows.)

This next bit of dialogue is a reach even for my standards, but its fun to think about.

Tenko: I am calm! Upset, but still calm! Shuichi: You don't seem very calm. Tenko: It may not seem like it to a degenerate, but I'm super duper calm for a girl!

If she's currently under the impression her master was a woman, than she might be emulating him here. I don't think her master was a very calm person, so she has unreasonable standards of calm.

If you try to apologize to her, you get "Do you think you can fix it just by apologizing!?" which is totally something an abusive parent would say. HOWEVER, if you tell her to be quiet...

She legitimately gets scared. This is the same face she makes when she discovers a body, so its not like this sprite is always used ironically.

In order to try to calm her, Shuichi touches her shoulder and gets thrown. In Tenko's defense, she did try to set this boundary earlier and was clearly scared.

They talk about it in the next FTE:

"Shuichi… About before…I'm sorry for throwing you. But it's because you're a degenerate male. Blame yourself for being born that way."

You can write this off as trademark Tenko sexism, but why would she apologize when she clearly isn't sorry. Its a step she takes to appease him, in case he wants to hurt her worse. I think this apology comes from a place of fear.

Then we get something really interesting.

"I woke up in bed… Did you carry me back to my room, Tenko?"

"I didn't want to…but I couldn't just leave you there. It was bothering me."

Tenko is okay with touching men (even if she doesn't like it) so long as she initiates the touch. She also did not have to do this, and I don't think she would if she hated men as much as she claims to.

I think its more accurate to say she's afraid of men. That better describes what I'm seeing.

We get this line in the same FTE

"Yeah… My parents told me I used to have anger tantrums similar to an exploding volcano." Told her. Not tell me. They don't currently tell her. She hasn't improved her temper in the slightest, so why won't they still tell her this?

According to Tenko, her parents were worried she wouldn't be able to fit into society... so they sent her to live in an isolated temple? The logic is questionable. The timeline is also questionable. If she "used to have" tantrums, then why send her away now. Did she stop and then start again?

Her parents are never mentioned again after this. I think Tenko was abandoned by her parents.

This is another reach, but if we assume Tenko had one mom and one dad, I think it is interesting that it's never mentioned she had beef with her bio dad. (a heteronormative assumption, but Danganronpa tends to stick to traditional family structures unless specified) It is possible that she didn't hate men at that age yet.

Despite all of this, Tenko praises her parents and clearly cares for them.

These lines are also noteworthy:

"During my mental training at the temple, I called the head priest, "Master.""

"Master was very pleased about this and added a new rule to the temple. He declared that he was the Master of martial arts!"

So this guy gets called Master once, gets an Ego, and then decides to appoint himself in a position of power. Shuichi speculates on her master's nature, but this paints a pretty clear picture.

In the next FTE, she tries to teach Shuichi Neo Aikido. Her methods are incredibly harsh. She plans to engage Shuichi with no explanation of any moves, and little warning. You could argue that she is just doing this to Shuichi because she's sexist, but she specifically says "Whaaat? There's no such thing as "basics" in Neo-Aikido!", implying this is how she was taught as well. Reminder that we don't know how old Tenko was when she first came to the temple and met her master.

Since we never actually get to see this sparring match, we have no idea what Tenko's definition of sparring is. Except we do in the main story, when we unlock Tenko's lab. Where she attacks Shuichi with no warning... again. This is a pattern. Shuichi cries out in pain from the resulting attack, implying she did not go gentle.

In this scene, we get a disturbing line.

"instead of training, we just fight head on!"

In case you were wondering if this is just Tenko's sexism kicking in, she does the exact same thing to Himiko right after.

That paints a very disturbing tone for Tenko's sparring with her master. Allow me to re-quote her introduction to you...

"If any degenerate tries to touch me, my reflex is to grab them and throw them across the room."

Reflex. Not desire. She specifically states its a reflex.

The next FTE is where she tells you about all the supposed limits of Neo Aikido. Namely that "If you get too excited about Christmas or Valentine's Day, your moves become weaker!"

I find it odd she mentions Valentine's day, such a romantic holiday. It usually isn't considered a main holiday, and something like her birthday would make a lot more sense to mention.

What does she follow it up with?

"In my case, my moves become weaker if I interact with males."

this is the second time she mentioned her master instilling these ideas in her. Also, despite this (perceived) limitation, she still chose to carry Shuichi to his room.

The next line says it all for me.

"I will master Neo-Aikido! That's why I can't be touched by males!"

What happens if she masters Neo Aikido? Her training sessions with her master might slow or stop. But since she's just a child, and still learning... her master must have thrown her all the time, just like we see her doing in her lab.

In her mind, this creates an endless cycle. So, if she represses information about her master's gender, maybe she has a chance at winning. Of being free of her training.

Speaking of her training, during one of Tenko's anti-male rants, she drops this line.

In Neo-Aikido, you can use weapons! You can even attack before the match starts! Those are Master's teachings! Now do you see how invincible it is!?

Tenko... did your master use weapons on you? Did you have to use weapons to defend yourself from your master?

In the beginning of her last FTE, she drops this line. At this point, it could easily be referring to her master, but it also makes sense if its just like,,, random men that saw what's going on.

"Thank you, but I know males actually have an ulterior motive when they give sympathy!"

If her master taught her that specific line, it specifically discourages her from listening to any male that tells her the way she is treated is wrong.

Also, contrast this

with this gem from FTE two.

(Tangent, from what Tenko demonstrates, its okay for males to throw her to the ground with little warning, but Tenko feels the need to do a strained apology when she does the same thing before taking on the "Master" role with Shuichi.)

The conclusion of Tenko's arc in her FTEs?

She begins to question her master's teachings, but then comes up with an explanation that lets her keep her existing worldview.

Even Shuichi's thoughts cast what she's saying into question.

Even despite their heart to heart, she's still scared of losing her Aikido abilities by shaking Shuichi's hand. She's still too scared of getting caught in that infinite loop, but she's starting to doubt if its real.

To end this meta, I'd like to circle back to where we began...

Her extremely controversial love hotel.

It starts like this:

I think that Shuichi being senior is important here. Specifically, I think Shuichi is a standin for her master in a universe where she masters Neo Aikido and surpasses him.

Does this make the whole thing very Freudian? Yes. and? This love hotel was brought to you by the creators of the Kiyo incest plotline.

Also, thicker than blood. Interesting choice of words there.

If you buy into my theory of Shuichi being Tenko's master in this, then the fact that Tenko perceives him as male is vitally important because it suggests on some level that she does understand her master's gender.

Shuichi's thoughts in this role reversal likely mirror Tenko's own thoughts.

But even in this perfect fantasy for Tenko, she still gives Shuichi the power in this situation. You'd think this is the opposite of what she wanted.

Her master is mentioned in this, but I don't think its a deal breaker because Shuichi is a standin for an idea rather than her actual master.

In the context of fights, "the winner can do anything he wants to the loser" has some dark implications considering who she fights with in canon.

Even when Shuichi protests he doesn't want to do anything to her, Tenko encourages it. She expects something to happen. She expects abuse.

Can I remind you that during the fight where Tenko throws Shuichi and later apologizes for it, she specifically asked if shutting up was an order and then started panicing? This bet feels a lot like ordering someone around, even if the word was never used.

These are the most interesting lines in the whole thing. You can interpret them one of two ways:

1.) This is Tenmiko shipping fodder and acknowledgement that she understands Himiko doesn't feel the same way about her.

2.) This is about her master, and the fact that she on some level gets that his only love was for the power he had over her. Either way, there's this theme of Tenko preferring negative attention over no attention.

I'd like to leave you with this one line from the love suite.

If that doesn't sound like an abuse victim pleading for forgiveness I don't know what does.

Hi @domwhoreward!! Thanks for this, it was fun, it was hard! It gave me an excuse to think about Muse a lot :P

1. What's your favourite live performance?

It’s so hard to pick… I will try answering this as favourite live shows in general, and specific songs I thought were freakishly good at a particular gig. I can't say any one is my one-and-only favourite because as soon as I hit publish, something else will land into my head and I won't be able to pick 😅

I think New Born live at the Mayan in 2015 is contender for one of the best recent live performances of the song, and the Mayan for one of their best live gigs overall! Pitch perfect. That show took my breath away. It’s also got the coolest outro on Assassin that is so heavy and just bonkers good, and Chris' backing vocals on Apocalypse Please (!!). Good gig. Everything about this gig was great. Madness live in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, 2012! Popcorn on Taratata, just because they’re having so much fun it makes the performance 25x more fun to watch! Space Dementia live at Pinkpop 2002! One day I will go digging and find that clip again, but Matt had the smuggest grin on his face having nailed that piano chorus outro. Showoff lol. They were excellent at that show! And of course, Glastonbury 2004. Wembley 2007. Unmatched quality. They're an excellent live band; like 97% of their gigs are of the quality that most bands would clamour to call the pinnacle of their own careers. It's a normal night for Muse. No one comes close.

(This Warchild UK performance is a strong contender too)

[This isn't technically a live gig but an in-store signing session, but I can see the raised eyebrows coming if I don't mention it because it is literally in my url for a reason - 1999 HMV Bristol in-store acoustic set. Sunburn, Cave, Muscle Museum. So good.]

One of my absolute favourites though, and I’m biased towards this because Time Is Running Out at Wembley was one of the earliest Muse performances I saw when I first got into the band— this cemented my love for them! It’s got to be the moment at the end of the extended improvised Jimmy Jam riff intro to TIRO where Chris lifts his bass and points it to the crowd. Instantly changed my life. Infinitely cool. You want to be him. So that (series of image frames put into a gif) is my favourite picture of Chris!

19. Favourite photoshoot of the band?

I am a little crazy about most of their Black Holes era promotional work! That coordinated black-and-white shirts and coat jackets with braces look was such a vibe:

One of my favourites out of those is this surreal artsy photoshoot they did where they all pretended to have died (Dom probably did the most realistic job of it… Matt and Chris just looked like peacefully sleeping angels lol)

This one photoshoot, I don’t know when it’s from exactly but I loved the composition of it. Blue skies overhead, band unbothered, Matt in aviators. Lovely vibe, I had it in a folder of pictures I meant to print as posters for the longest time when I was younger!

And this one Resistance era photoshoot (that ended up on the album sleeve). I so badly wanted this as the full-length poster, but I was one era too late to the band. This one's my favourite!

21. Favourite wtf moment in an interview?

A few lol. The whole entire 2011 NME awards drunk interview (he's heading for gweatness, he's getting there but it's an uphill stwuggle), "pair of pink fluffy handcuffs" interview, "come to our gigs, anything could happen, I could kill Dom, I could get naked and fuck Chris" interview, "Dom's still doing lines of coke off models' tits" interview, deflated balls interview, fan interview where Matt insisted on having the socks the fans gifted them, and on the topic of socks:

All the shit he said in Black Holes-era interviews... ([On being asked if the Queen was hot] "You know, when she was younger, in her prime. She might not look great on the £50 note, but she had her glory days.")

34. Have you met any of the band (/if not, any favourite fan interaction/gig stories)?

Haven't met the band unfortunately, I'd be a changed person if I did I think. Meeting Muse will fix me (<- lies; it will break up and shake up my entire core I think).

But the gifts fans give them are always a favourite moment of mine! The fan giving Dom the Slipknot mask that gave us "sit the fuck down!" (well, she actually gave it to Matt, but he passed it on to Dom). The various shirts with edits of Dom fans have gifted Matt that he's worn on the road.

My favourite live interactions: when Muse interact with the crowd, play to them, smile at them (especially when Matt sings Starlight straight to fans in the front!), when they come down to the barricade. Chris going crowdsurfing at Glastonbury 2004.

day*Sits in the Teacher’s Lounge and hears the bell ring.*

Hey everyone, Quinn the Loremistress of the Gay Canon here, and after a two month break due to depression I AM BACK! This time we’ll be doing a series of RETRO-Rewatches and thoughts on some old time favorite cartoons from my childhood! A quick disclaimer on this, I WILL BE tossing out QUEER / LGBTQIA* / GNC headcanons, story ideas and more. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THIS then, um, whatever, go to another page :D

As this is my FIRST of the Retro-rewatches I’ll try to establish a frame here. First, I’ll go through about 5-7 episodes each with thoughts on each self-contained vingette. I’ll keep up my hottakes, and then lay out how I see a good fanfic or even fanon arising from this series. Since THIS SERIES deals with kids I want to emphasize that any and ALL story ideas I write will focus on College Age or more for things!

Anyway *Blows her Whistle* RECESS IS ON!

Episode 1

The Break In - We learn about the playground and the organizatino of its poli,tics and personalities. TJ, the leader of our gang, is captured after trying to get “The Good Food”. We get a good show off of the gang including Grethin’s intelligence Mikey’s drama, and Spinelli’s tenacity. Vince remains our sports star (which is perhaps a bit of an obvious racist stereotype here), and the one who refuses to just directly insult the King (Bob is himself pretty...over the top).

The New Kid - This episode speaks a lot to the school transfer experience. To me, it means a lot to see Gus standing up for himself and telling the kids his name. To me this sets up some nice ideas for some fae stories. Honestly, this story mostly focuses on how its important to deny erasure of yourself, and to rebel in the face of tyranny. That and how cool of a character every single member of the gang is!

Episode 2

The Experiment - We see the first example of the Jimmy Cratner stories and we learn how Butch got the white-streak in his hair. Of course, he gets the freak out from seeing his brother kiss a girl. This sets up our kiss experiment between Spinelli and TJ. Honestly, this is where I consider them a cute pair, but honestly not “destined” to date down the road. Plus, oh god, I do love the introduction of Randall as the evil little swindler.

The Great Jungle Gym Standoff - Old Rusty is going to replaced the iconic Jungle Gym must be replaced from years of slowly falling apart. The kids make a stand off and later their parents join them. I think ,this was one of the ones made before Gus’ arrival since he’s completely gone in this episode. It sets a nice tone though about how the kids see their playground and how their parents aren’t always against them.

Episode 3

Jinxed - Gus is introduced to the “KIds Unwritten Code of Honor” and the Jinx curse is dropped on him. The Ashley’s little dastardly intro is nicely done, as it shows how much these kids can be bullys. This episode really establishes Gus’ Lawful Good take on the Code. We’ll see this later during the Tattletale episode which makes it even far more interesting. Gotta love how Gus does a bad trade for a Harmonica and a bunch of music from the same instrument.

Officer Mikey - Wow Mikey sets his eyes on one of his silly hobbies (I say this because it’s part of the joke of the story). It does help that this is an example of how kids change their dreams on a whim at times. This is a typical trade and fetch quest story. The gang must bounce between various points so that they can make Mikey live his dream for a day. He immediately quits because it was too hard, almost unleashing the anger of Spinelli.

Episode 4

First Name Ashley - The eponymous “Ashleys” learn of Spinelli’s first name after Randall reveals it. The little snitch loses standing in Finster’s Outfit and thus begins the well known takeover of Spinelli into the Ashley’s. Luckily the gang manipulate the Clique rules of the playground to get her out. I like this story because it really builds the foundation for why the Ashley’s don’t the Gang. It also sets up one of the more interest dynamics between Ashley A and the others.

To Finster In Love - Finster finding love is an interesting story as while she’s seen a major antagonist along with Prickly in the series she really is a good person. Hank is a great character who really highlights the wonders of custodians in schools. It also shows how manipulative TJ and the kids can be. I think it really gives us a good idea that the playground has a pretty well established hierarchy and without it goes to hell, fast.

Episode 5

King Gus - King Bob is struck with laryngitis leading to us to see Gus become King. Originally a figurehead to the King’s advisors his head closely swells and he finds himself instituting a lot of tyrannical new decrees. The kids try to see King Gus and face the bereaucracy of the Playground. I do love how the Sixth Graders illustrate war via dodgeballs which is even more important with Gus’ background. Gus is quickly dethrone by King Bob and is sent back to being a nobody.

Big Brother Chad - Yes, we are introduce to geekdom, and we learn that Vince’s big bro is an Urkelesque geek. Honestly this particular episode really sets things up on how instead of being a toxic geek we need to be nice. Chad doesn’t look down on others he has fun with programming and playing 3D chess. He doesn’t see himself as anything bad. Vince’s werewolf dream of becoming a ageek is so over the top I fucking love it soooo much. NEATO!

Perhaps the best part of this particular vignette is how even Geeks should protect and can back their family.

Episode 6

My Fair Gretchin - A aptitude test shows Gretchin’s genius and she attempts her best to fail. This particular ep reveals Prickly’s focus on using achievements to become a Middle School Principal. Gretchin appears in the middle of a test dressed in a strange 80s / 90s styled outfit. Spouting weird dumb response such as Dennis Rodman is the President. What we learn later is she is allowed to stay while staying as a tutor to the rest of Third Street’s faculty.

Speedy We Hardly Knew Ye - The class hamster passes away and hte Gang decides to call for funeral. We learn an entire series of hamster generations has connected with a variety grades. Speedy the Hamster has been an icon of Third Street school extending their way all the way back to the current Bus Drivers which means people well into their forties knew Speedy. Hell, even the Mayor pops up.

The fact that they kept changing out the Hamsters and no one figured it out is just so bloody weird. It does make sense, if you want a long living pet for the Class for several years you’d do something like a Bearded Dragon or a Chinchilla. But Speedy himself like much in school represents a lot for kids even through the generations. The Canon - Thoughts!

So let’s begin Double Ashley aka Spinelli and Ashley A or Ashley B is perhaps one of my favorite possible pairings. Then there is Spinelli and Gretchin but honestly I prefer these two mixing up with the Ashleys since it shows nerd and preppy love!

Honestly, Recess has a lot of good opportunities for later life gay story telling. Kurst the Worst as a local baker dating Mikey would be adorbs. TJ and Laws as boyfriends and running their own game shop perhaps. Vince as a big time baller and supporting his friends while Gus is military veteran councilor. Skies are the limit here. So far I’ll focus on my favorite should be Gretchin and Spinelli, but nah and nope. I could easily seeing someone writing Gus or even Mikey as trans perhaps.

Who knows, I write Trans HP so who knows. I’ll have more thoughts once I sleep on these episodes and watch a few more!

Chad is a great non-creepy Geek and he has not obvious toxic masculinity.

Speedy was a nie hamster. Most Hamsters are not nice I say this as a bloody petcare specialist! Fuck those little devils!

Love how instead of Jesus Christ or God, the kids say “Mike”. I wonder who “MIKE” is.

The fact that nobody realize that Hamsters only live for two years is beyond fucking hilarious. Even the Mayor was foolish enough to believe the ruse!

𝐀 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 ❰ 𝟎 / 𝟏 ❱ while i’m glad to say that yuan has many friends that he holds near to his heart, i personally think he lacks having that one true best friend that he trusts more than anyone. i can see the two of them talking to one another for hours about shared interests ( could be makeup / skincare, fashion design, tv dramas, or whatever else tbh !! ) and sharing secrets that no one else knows. i envision this plot being claimed by a female-presenting muse, but that’s largely because yuan tends to “ push limits ” with his male friends, and well, it just complicates things. though, i’m open to whatever !! i’d really love for him to have an unbreakable, special bond with someone that’s not colored by the rosy glasses he often puts on. someone who helps bring him back to reality and think more about what he wants, and his actions. someone that he can help, too, in a number of ways. all of that !!

𝐀𝐍 𝐈𝐃𝐎𝐋 / 𝐑𝐎𝐋𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐃𝐄𝐋 ❰ 𝟎 / 𝟏 ❱ the entertainment industry is somewhere that yuan never thought he’d end up, but he’s here, and he’s trying to find some part of it that he’s passionate about. a part of him wishes that he could convince the company to hire him as a hair, makeup, and styling intern, but being that he’s an artist instead, he’s diving into everything pretty much for the first time. what he does know for sure, though, is that he’s not idol material. in his opinion, he can’t dance, sing, or rap, and he personally feels that his strongest shot at success is through acting. your muse just so happens to be in the agency as an actor and yuan looks up to them a lot. they inspire him a lot to get better as an actor, too, and he does all he can to get their attention. maybe your muse takes him under their wing and nurtures this interest of his, or maybe they’re annoyed by his pestering, etc. it’s all up to your muse and how they react !!

𝐀𝐍 𝐄𝐗-𝐁𝐎𝐘𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐃 ❰ 𝟎 / 𝟏 ❱ despite romance and relationships getting him into trouble pretty badly recently, i don’t think that yuan was smart enough to not date before teetering that tightrope with aiden right now. being that his personality is so bold and so flirtatious, and he shows no remorse in calling a cute guy cute when he sees one, it’s safe for me to believe that he’s had a few flings in the past, but i would love for him to have one solid ex-boyfriend where things are still complicated. that, or maybe they’ve moved on and are just close friends now ?? just anything with a past we can map out; one that’s deep and profound for both of them. yuan’s definitely not as career focused as my first muse, kian, so getting more into his personal life is always something i love doing !!

𝐀 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 ❰ 𝟎 / 𝟏 ❱ while they would need to tread extremely carefully, i’m a little interested in the idea of yuan finding a guy in the trainee group that makes him feel seen / special while he’s not around aiden. it’ll complicate things for him, but right now, due to the distance between them, he’s starved for affection and he’s really lonely. i feel like just having someone to share winks, smiles, etc. with on the trip to los angeles, or if they’re able to somehow, sneaking away and just hanging out alone, etc. would be good for his soul. he misses that type of flirty attention, but knows he can’t dare push boundaries too far given how deeply he’s being monitored by the company. it’ll be a good test for him to show some restraint, too. also, it’s worth noting that aiden and yuan are not officially together in-verse right now, but yuan does plan on confessing to aiden the second they’re allowed to see one another properly. we’ll just have to see how the cookie crumbles and how things develop over time !!

𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ❰ 𝟎 / 𝟐 ❱ everyone’s got haters, and because of his punishment and image in the company right now, i’m sure yuan has more than just one. i’d love for him to have an antagonistic relationship with people. maybe they don’t trust him and think he’s nothing but trouble. maybe they keep their distance because they think he’ll bring drama into their lives. maybe they think he’s talentless and they question why he’s even in the company. is it just because yushin’s an idol and it’s nepotism ?? yuan has a hard time hating anyone, but if your muse is more aggressive / upfront / verbal with their dislike for him, he may return the pettiness in his own way. we’ll have to see !!

so, as stated in the official trainee mission post, yuan isn’t fully trusted by the company yet, and therefore, will only be allowed to travel with everyone to los angeles, california from the date of aug 13 to the date of sep 17. all interactions for the mission in regards to yuan must happen on american soil !! at present, i have no threads planned for either the language workshops or the cultural experience adventures, so if your muse is in need of some for one, or both, and is alright hanging out with yuan being that he’s so closely monitored by the company, please let me know !! i’ll be posting an official tracker once i get things rollin’. 🥰

Steph's Crew - Part 8: Ben's Leaving Party

(cw - strong language)

Intro:

Ben has decided to leave! He and Stephanie talk about it in this part, and the others plan a special goodbye party for him.

The party is honestly one of my favourite parts of this whole thing, lol. So much happens… lots of fun and lots of drama. The farewell party quickly devolves into a bit of a fight between the group, leading to the party ending early.

Also, we get a bit of Stephanie's backstory in this one. The last scene is a flashback to Stephanie interacting (arguing, more like) with her foster sister Melanie before she runs away from that family.

(Party at El’s place)

Ben's leaving tomorrow

Stephanie: (sighs, wraps her arms around Ben) Man… I can't believe you're actually leaving tomorrow. I'm going to miss you so much.

Ben: (returns the hug, kisses her forehead) I'm going to miss you too, babe. But don't worry… it's just a year, and then I'll be right back. And we'll have all this money saved up! We'll finally be able to afford a really nice place.

Stephanie: I know. And that's so great! Honestly. It's just…I don't know how I'm going to survive a whole year without you. Who am I going to cuddle with at night?

Ben: I mean, you can always cuddle with a pillow, or get a stuffed animal or something. Hey, I hear teddy bears are great cuddlers.

Stephanie: (rolls eyes affectionately) Oh, shut up. You're not funny.

Ben: I'm not trying to be funny, Steph. I'm trying to make you feel better. But, if you insist, I can always send you a picture of my face, just to keep you company. You can even stick it on your teddy bear's face and pretend you're cuddling with me!

Stephanie: (giggles, shaking her head) You're ridiculous, Ben. I love you, but you're so fucking ridiculous…

Ben: (pretends to be offended) HEY! (laughs, then kisses her) I love you too. And I promise, I'll make it worth your while. I'll call you every single day, and we'll talk about all the boring stuff that happens at work. It'll be like I never left.

Stephanie: I guess that's better than nothing. (sighs) But I'm going to miss seeing your face.

Ben: I get that. But that's what FaceTime is for. We'll make it work. We always do, you know that.

Stephanie: Yeah, we do. I'm just going to miss hugging you. And kissing you. And holding your hand. And your cute butt.

Ben: Ok. (laughs) Now look who is being ridiculous…

Stephanie: Still you. (laughs) Now, come here and give me a hug before you leave me forever.

Ben: Oh my God, Steph. (hugs) It's not going to be forever!

(the two kiss again)

Stephanie: It's going to be weird… you not being here for me.

Ben: I'll always be here for you, no matter the distance.

Stephanie: I know, baby. I know…

The Party! (that evening, at Elise's house)

Stephanie: Alright guys, let's make this a night to remember before my man leaves me for a whole year!

Ben: (laughs, putting an arm around Steph) Yeah, let's go out with a bang!

Bret: I brought the beer, let's get this party started!

Dylan: YEAH! Let's!

Elise: (notices that Bret is smoking) Wait, wait, hold on. Bret, put that out right now before you burn the house down.

Bret: Relax El, it's just one little joint. Lighten up, will ya?

Elise: No, Bret. I will not lighten up. This is my house! And in my house, we have certain rules about smoking. I should know, I grew up here.

Bret: Ughhhh… quit being boring, El.

Elise: I'm being serious, Bret! Just because my parents aren't around, doesn't mean that those rules have changed. Plus, you promised me you were going to be more responsible!

Bret: Yeah, well I lied. (takes a hit) This shit is the best.

Stephanie: Come on guys, let's not fight. This is supposed to be a party, let's try and have some fun.

(Everyone starts drinking and partying, and the mood is lively)

Alice: (suddenly enters the room) What the fuck, you guys didn't invite me to the party?

Dylan: Oh my God, Ally… (looks guilty)

Stephanie: Oh, shit. I'm so sorry Alice. We totally forgot to invite you.

Alice: (sighs, welling up with tears) Whatever, it's not like I would have had fun anyways. (she sits on the couch and sulks)

Ben: (trying to lighten up the mood) Hey, come on guys. Let's all make a toast to the good times we've had. Yeah?

(Everyone raises their glasses and cheers. The party continues to run relatively smoothly until a sudden disruption)

Elise: WAIT! Wait, where's my vase?

Stephanie: What vase, El?

Elise: The red one, remember? It was a gift from my grandparents… It's special, it's one of the last things we have left of them! And it's missing - I can't find it anywhere! (she notices it's broken and gasps) OH MY GOD!!!

Ben: Oh, no…

(Elise starts to cry)

Stephanie: Oh crap. I'm so sorry, El, this wasn't meant to happen. (hugs Elise and tries to calm her down)

Dylan: (notices Bret looking guilty) Bret, did you break the vase?

(Bret laughs sheepishly. Dylan shakes his head)

Bret: He-he. My bad. Whoopsie.

Elise: (angrily) What the hell, Bret…

Bret: (starts laughing) It's just a vase, El. Chill the fuck out.

Elise: That vase was special to me, Bret! It's so important, I wasn't even allowed to touch it growing up! My parents are going to kill me once they find out it got broken on my watch!

Stephanie: Okay, okay, okay. Let's all just calm down. I know we're all a little drunk right now and things are getting out of hand, but let's all calm down and try to settle this properly.

Ben: Yeah, I don't want my farewell party to end like this. I would much rather leave things on a positive note.

Dylan: Yeah… Why the fuck did we invite Bret anyways? He's just going to ruin everything like he always does… hell, he already has.

Alice: (mutters to herself) You invite him and you can’t even bother remembering to invite me…

Bret: Hey, I'm trying to change, okay? You guys know that I've been trying. But you all just keep pushing me back.

Elise: I can't believe you broke my vase, Bret.

Bret: Look, I'm sorry, alright? I'll buy you a new one.

Elise: It was one of a kind!

Alice: Ok, literally what the fuck is going on here? Why are we all so concerned about a goddamn vase instead of the fact that y’all straight up forgot to invite me to this party?!

Stephanie: Look, Ally, we've already said we're sorry. Let's just deal with one thing at a time.

Alice: Sure… damn it, by the time you've dealt with this vase issue, you guys will have forgotten I even came here!

Dylan: Look, Alice, you really shouldn't be upset with Steph here. I was planning on inviting you to the party myself, as my plus one, but I decided not to at the last minute. If you're going to be mad at someone, then be mad at me.

Alice: WHAT?! Why?

Dylan: Because I didn't want you to feel left out.

Bret: Yeah. I told him you probably wouldn't like it.

Alice: You did?! Why?!

Stephanie: Damn it, Bret!

Bret: What? I mean, it is a commonly known fact that Alice ain't much of a ‘party’ person anymore.

Alice: Since when?!

Bret: I don't know… I mean you don't come out to party with us anymore… even boring old Ellie over here hangs out with us every once in a while. You've completely stopped.

Alice: Because I'm busy, Bret! I mean, between school, my job, babysitting my cousins and my weekly dance classes, I've got a lot on my plate. Plus, I can't have a repeat of my last mock exams, I actually want to pass my classes.

Dylan: (sighs) I'm so sorry, Alice. I really didn't want to hurt you.

Bret: We just thought it would run smoother if everyone present was actually having a good time, you know?

Dylan: (glares at Bret in response to his comment) And it’s really not that big of a deal - just a small gathering. It's just meant to be a nice surprise for Ben on his last night here.

Alice: Well, it's not a nice surprise. It's just freakin’ rude. I’m supposed to be a part of this group too, you know. I’m supposed to be friends with y’all. And I've known Ben for a lot longer than most of you have. Including Steph, his fricking girlfriend. I deserve a place at his leaving party too!

Stephanie: Alright, Alice. Settle down. Let's turn off the music for a second and talk about this properly-

Elise: (interrupts, voice breaking) I can't, Steph. I'm sorry, but I'm done. I can't deal with this anymore! (runs off)

Stephanie: Wait, but where are you going El? El?

Bret: Oh, God. (follows after her) Elise, wait. Come back! Let me make this right.

Elise: (stops at the door) You can't make this right, Bret. You never can. (opens the door and leaves the house)

Ben: (whispers to Stephanie) …Isn't this her house, though? Why is she leaving her own house?

Stephanie: I… Okay, so this party is officially over.

Bret: Elise! ELISE! (runs out after her, calling her to come back)

Stephanie: How about we all just go home and try to sleep it off?

Ben: Yeah, good idea, babe. I'll call an Uber for you guys.

Dylan: I can't believe that this is how the night ended…

Alice: And I can't believe I even came!

Bret: (comes back, tears in his eyes) I lost her.

(long awkward silence)

Bret: I really fucked up this time, didn't I?

Ben and Stephanie reflect

Ben: (getting ready to go to bed) Well that could have gone better…

Stephanie: (sits on the bed) That farewell party was a nightmare!

Ben: It wasn't that bad, hun.

Stephanie: Yes, it was! The whole thing was a disaster. I don't even have words to describe how terrible it was!

Ben: Babe, it's alright. I appreciate the thought behind it. And I'm just glad I got to see all of them one last time, and we all spent time together before I go. I'm so grateful, honestly.

Stephanie: (sighs) That wasn't how I wanted it to go. I'm sorry, Ben. Really.

Ben: Don't be. I loved it. (kisses her)

Stephanie: (frowns) Hey, do you remember what the date is today?

Ben: (puts his arm around her) April 23rd. Why?

Stephanie: Nothing. I just remembered something. (sighs) Today would have been Mel's 21st birthday. I’ve just realised.

Ben: Mel?

Stephanie: Melanie. My foster sister? I've told you about her before. She died last year.

Ben: Oh. Wow. I'm so sorry, Steph…

Stephanie: Yeah. It sucks. I can't believe Mel is gone. I miss her so much. Our last conversation was a real shit show.

Ben: How come? What happened?

Stephanie: We were always at each other's throats, you know? I was so jealous of her and her perfect life. I always found a way to bring her down with every little thing she did. I don't know whether it was me trying to even out the playing field or what, but… yeah. It was really bad.

Ben: That's rough, Steph. But you two were sisters, you know? You had each other's backs.

Stephanie: Yeah, no. Me and Mel were never like that, Ben. I was always such a bitch to her. I wish I could take it all back.

Ben: We all have regrets, babe. But the important thing is that you loved each other.

Stephanie: I know. I just wish I could tell her that one more time. Let her know that I did appreciate her. I'll never get the chance to tell her again.

Ben: I'm sure she knew, Steph.

Stephanie: Yeah, I hope she did. (pauses) I love you, Ben.

Ben: I love you too, babe. (kisses her again) Let's not waste any more time with regrets. Let's make the most of the time we have together. (he switches off the light, and the two of them get into their bed)

Stephanie: Good idea. Hey, how long until you have to leave for the airport?

Ben: I aim to be out of the house at five tomorrow morning. So about seven hours?

Stephanie: (smiles) Great. That's more than enough time. (pulls him in for another kiss)

Melanie and Stephanie (dream/flashback)

Melanie: Hey Steph!

Stephanie: Hi.

Melanie: So how was your day at school?

Stephanie: Fine.

Melanie: Oh, my gosh. I had the best time today. I need to tell you all about it.

Stephanie: Please don't.

Melanie: (awkwardly laughs) Ok… what's your problem, then?

Stephanie: Problem? I'm the one with the problem here? Really, Mel?

Melanie: …What's going on? I'm confused.

Stephanie: You had one job!

Melanie: (grimaces) Oh my God. Here we go…

Stephanie: I asked you to book the tickets as soon as possible for my half term trip with Ellie. I needed you to arrange this one thing for me, and you couldn't do it.

Melanie: Steph, I'm sorry. Believe me, I am! I don't know how many more times I need to say it for you to believe it, but-

Stephanie: (interrupts) Now she's found someone else to go with! My best friend is officially doing the trip without me! And it's all your fault. God, Mel, you're so annoying. Can't you just do one thing right for once?

Melanie: What the hell, Steph? You're always so critical of me, it's like you enjoy seeing me fail. I promise you, I didn't mean to screw you over.

Stephanie: Well, excuse me for wanting you to be better.

Melanie: Alright, but-

Stephanie: (interrupts) I mean, you're always screwing people over, what's so hard about being responsible every once in a while?

Melanie: (groans in annoyance) You know what? Fuck you. I'm sick of your bullshit. I'm out of here.

Stephanie: Good riddance. At least maybe now I can finally have some peace during my time off.

Melanie: You know, you're nowhere near as perfect as you believe you are, Steph. You're just a cruel, heartless, bitter, jealous bitch.

Stephanie: Whatever, Mel. You're just a screw-up. You'll never amount to anything in life. You're nothing.

Melanie: I hope you're happy, Steph. You finally got what you wanted. I'm out. (leaves the room)

Stephanie: Goodbye, Mel. Don't let the door hit you on the way out of here!

(Stephanie then wakes up, and remembers that Melanie died not too long after they had this conversation in real life)

That's it for today. I'm so glad I finally posted the party scene! It took me the longest to write…

This one is rather long… I've noticed that the longer this has been going, the longer the posts tend to be.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this part. Things are already starting to shift in the story. Bret is trying to change, but old habits die hard lol. Elise has been really sweet and patient with him up to this point, but he has officially crossed a line with her.

And we finally get a bit of insight into what Stephanie's life was like in her old foster home! How do you guys feel about Melanie, btw? Not sure how I feel about her myself, tbh. She's like, really important, but also not really seen/explored much. Kind of meant to be a metaphor for Steph's personal struggles and guilt.

Who do you think was in the wrong in that argument at the end? I'm curious to hear your thoughts about it.

Next time, we're going to get a bit more of Dylan! It's about time we got some more development with him.

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID THE TRUTH.

I admit that i enjoyed act 3 but it feels like really rushed i have so much complain with that.

The build up until act 2 was so good it give us so much premise but the final blow si meh. Sorry that i want to share thing long rant with you

1. Why the final talk is with yae, no offense to her but we need ei to explain not to mention she witness khaenriah downfall so she can give us more information, i feel like they do it for the plot armor so they can just keep dragging this

2. So many things that quite inconsistant, the shogun is show no mercy to anyone that even did a little thing outside what she think its right, how come she can still have a talk with signora, when sara is falling like that, and also there is no clarification about sara right now.

The traveler was so done at first they refuse to help thoma and ayaka at the beginning. But they seem so happy and forget everything how come they are not RAGE ( okay maybe this is to bias and personal) when this nation provide nothing about our siblings information and also why they are not mention anything about their problem in ei stroy quest. Its nonsense! She is right in front of youu, ask about your siblings, ask about khaenriah, ask about ukmown god!!. How come they can just forget like that. Also mihoyo really waste the potential about twin things i thing ei will give us so much help bcs of the sympathy that we both rn lost our twin but noooo.

3. Kokomi seem lost some brain cell, she make a very succesfull grand intro but she become meh in act 3, how come a great strategist like her let the sus sponsorship slip just bcs they are desperate, not to mention her screen time is really small and her role seem so unsignificant and it feels lile she is a plain npc.

4. The awesome world quest that we have done doesnt get any mention at all! Inazuma owe us so much with cleansing sakura, thunder sakura, tatarigami, obarashi quest. It has so much potential that yae or ei or anyone else aknowledge what traveler has been done but nooo.

cracks knuckles... i suppose it's time for my promised dissertation. interestingly enough, you touched on a lot of the main issues i had with chapter III.

i think that if i had to pin the main issue, it's a lack of overall cohesiveness? we were jumping all over the place without the chance to ever flesh things out. inazuma is a smaller cast, but i feel like we didn't get to see any of them shine. since i'm most interested in the genshin characters, i'll break down my problems by going over everyone and their (lack) of impact on the story.

was ayaka not questioned or placed under suspicion for being close to thoma before his escape? i wanted to see her broken up over her duties as they relate to the yashiro commission, paired with having someone she genuinely cares about in danger. it would've been an interesting struggle if she was forced to choose one or the other. instead she just kinda took a back seat.

speaking of thoma, i don't even have anything to say, because he just... was there? for .0001 seconds. said "lol this sucks ig" and that's about it. i know we're going to get a story for him in the future since he's a 5* but i'm not getting my hopes up 😭 then in the raiden shogun's character story, man is peachy keen! be upset with the raiden shogun! have some inner conflict! even if it's just using loaded language because he's under surveillance for going against the raiden shogun, that'd be so cool. saying something like,

"Traveler, what's with that expression? Oh please, there's nothing to worry about. We're under the Statue of the Omnipresent God's protection. Nothing bad has ever happened here." *wink*

i also don't know what to say about gorou. he was... there....... i think. what is he fighting for? what are the stakes for him? what makes him place so much trust into kokomi? i'm out of things to say about him because i don't remember anything he did or said.

kokomi... oh kokomi... i was so hyped. so excited. i thought that maybe we could see a foil to the raiden shogun. that she'd have a moment where she's forced to realize, just like her opponent, sacrifices must be made that will hurt people who will never understand why she made them. or maybe something to show her military prowess. but instead she just accepts a mysterious patron's help (?), sees her people aging like the grateful dead from JJBA, and goes oh well. that sucks. what can ya do. oh bye traveler i guess, good luck with that. ????????????? HUH... similar case to thoma where she's gonna get a character story but like. she won't be the leader of the resistance anymore. that was her whole shtick. they took her shtick away. also she forced me to interact with more NPCs whose names i've already forgotten so i'm tilted about that still.

KUJOU SARA... AN INJUSTICE. A DISGRACE. a slap to my woman loving face. the build up was there. yae miko's comments about sara probably knowing the tenryou commission is involved in shady dealings, but is choosing not to think about it. sara being forced to confront reality and challenge her adopted father with the truth. being able to blaze a new path for herself in the process. when she started running to the raiden shogun i was ultra hyped up. sara, a devotee to the shogun for so long, was about to see her god interacting with the same people who led inazuma to this awful state. how would she react? would she stay ignorant, like yae miko so coyly said, choosing to look away in favor of following her god's footsteps? or would she be forced to recognize the raiden shogun isn't as divine as she once thought, and challenge her belief system?

we open the door to see the raiden shogun. the loading screen ensues. the camera pans to the ominous room, clouded in darkness, hinting at the ominous confrontation that is to come. the music takes a serious timbre. and then...

well fuck that potential character arc i guess. (we still don't know what sara made of any of this since she poofed out of existence from the story at this point)

kazuha also was handed a similar treatment. we've been with him for a while longer now. he is our introduction into inazuma, the one who first gets us emotionally involved by regaling us with the bittersweet tale of friendship that led him to becoming a wanted criminal. a kind soul who loves nature yet was dealt a cruel hand by fate, forced to watch his home nation turn into a hostile place, where his dear friend ultimately perished as a result. we get the scene with his friend's vision lighting back up. he parries a block from the raiden shogun, in the same area where his friend was killed by her. the parallels. the drama. except this time, he wasn't too late. he protected the traveler where he "failed" to protect his friend in the past. did he feel redemption at this? or was it a bittersweet reminder of what could've been?

WELL i guess we'll never know because we didn't get to talk to him again 😭 idk who got a bait and switch worse, him or sara. jesus christ mihoyo.

then we have signora. why is the raiden shogun talking to her? does she know about the gnosis being taken, and if she doesn't, what was her plan to get it from the archon? what does she think about scaramouche? and oh, okay, we're fighting here now. good fight + god tier music. pog pog. okay, now we've beaten her up, and raiden shogun wyd— wait no not signora her lore is still on CUPS not YET raiden shogun and— ah she's dead. okay. non nerds who didn't read artifact lore are going to know nothing about her. signora has such an interesting story, and yet... well. ok.

then we get raiden shogun redemption (?) arc. i was hype for this as well, though at that point, idk why i bothered being hype. i knew they were gonna do a cute power of friendship something or another, and i'm good with that, so long as it's executed well. what i was envisioning was like seven different buffs to correspond with the seven different visions, the dreams of those whose ambitions were stolen serving as the spear to penetrate the raiden shogun's heart of stone. maybe a hydro vision giving us extra healing for a time, with the voice acting over it being like,

"Even if the rest of the world forgets us, let our will carry you through this one final time. Succeed where we couldn't, Traveler."

so on and so forth.

but instead we got— you get the idea at this point. why bother spelling it out anymore.

at that point i was surprised the raiden shogun didn't go "oopsie woopsie!! we made a fucky wucky!!!" because that was the vibe i was getting. i love ei, don't get me wrong, but i wanted to see her challenged with what she had done to inazuma in the past year. maybe meeting NPC #2345259 who lost her sister to the vision decree or something, reminding ei of the love she held for her sister... being forced to come to terms with the extent of what she's done in pursuit of eternity.

anyway. please for the love of god mihoyo hire better writers for the main story. that is all i ask. thank you.

May 2021 Part 1

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Second Chance Ep 6 fin - Chris & Jeno were TOO CUTE we got ALL the tropes: parental passing on the torch of care (a rare one), hair drying, hair touching, the prom with everyone was in adorable suits (Tang Yi approves), GOOD kisses, confessions galore, boop (+ bonus pool boop), tumblr now thinks they’re lesbians (new trope I’ve just decided on), claiming, rooftop assignation. Conclusion? This is one of the best BL pulps I’ve seen in a really long time. We are PLEASED!

Y-Destiny Ep 7 - a pretty classic take on the “reformed player/rake” romance trope plus a ton of BL visuals like back hug, messy eater, rooftop assignation, and pillow clutch (a Cheewin signature). Cheewin sure knows his tropes (he should, he started a lot of them and his YYY Special is nothing but a trope parody pastiche, it’s Absolute BL before Absolute BL and A LOT weirder).

Lovely Writer Ep 11 - The casting closet has come to play. I really like that LW is taking the industry and fans to task. It’s hard to watch sometimes, but it SHOULD be a little squirmy and uncomfortable. This was an excellent Episode 11 and we all suffered for it. I hope they can resolve it well in the finale. They’ve done great work so far, I trust them.

Close Friend Ep 3: (Willing or Not) - sports kinda romance, it was cute because MaxNat are cute together, but it reminded me a lot of their arc in Why R U, which is to say, short and somewhat forgettable.

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 5 - am I over this? I think I might be over it. Not into the punching down humor in terms of femme or Sikhs, I don’t like Pi, and found myself fast-forwarding through most of this ep. Mostly I only watch when Mork is on screen. I wanna know why Mork likes Pi so much, but that’s all I’m interested in. Tons of tropes but I’m not even motivated to screen cap, which is saying something. Look, the characters pretty much lack motivation and so I’m losing sympathy.

Nitiman Ep 1 - oh I like it. This is the standard Thai BL delicious trash I know and love. 2 Moons university setting pastiche, check! Engineering students = gay, check! Instant hate vrs instant love, check! Seme vrs tsundere uke, check! Plus the side dishes are tasty. I’m disposed to be pleased, especially as Fish is disappointing. Sadly they insisted on singing, but you can’t have everything.

Love Area Ep 1 - I’m not holding this post just for one BL that I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find tomorrow, so I’ll let you know how it is next week.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korea) Ep 7-8 fin - so flipping cute, their little smiles, just GAH. Bit of a dead fish kiss but I don’t care because I loved this tiny show full of soft bois and no one saying anything directly (except our man with the poetry, I hope he finds his true love). Adorable.

Papa & Daddy (Taiwan) Ep 3 - HOW IS THIS SHOW SO WHOLESOME? This is possibly the cutest thing on air right now (and I don’t actually like children). Just GAH! The actual Taipei pride footage. I didn’t even mind all the product placement (I happen to like that bubbly myself). It’s just so cute. Everyone should be watching this. It will make you feel so good and happy. Not gonna lie, this ep is ALL about queer found family and I might have ugly cried over the teddy bear at the end - in a good way. *** Quick note because I think it’s super important: in 2020 Taiwan Pride was called March for the World. Why? Because Taiwan managed to control C19 better than any other country, they were the only country able to hold pride safely, so they did it for all of us. I don’t feel like they got enough recognition for this.

Word of Honor (China) Ep 34-36 fin - In the end, WoH turned out to be a morality tale about the superiority of agrarian society over semi-nomadic tribes combined with a message about enduring love profoundly undermined by Chinese censorship. It’s like this amazing meal. I ate my fill, and enjoyed every bite, but had a bit too much, and now I have heart burn. Am I upset about the ending? Sure am. Good for them for manipulating my emotions! Was this a great drama? Yes. Did I expect this from China? Sure did. Do i feel betrayed anyway? Sure do. I guess these things are going to have to coexist in my psyche. Along with heart burn. Here have the actual-not-really-epilogue-ending. It's wafer thin. I’m putting this one to bed. I feel like I’ve said my piece and I want to move on from 36 courses of pretty men in pretty robes full of pretty innuendoes and deadly peanuts. I’ll miss the big fuck off white fan, tho.

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 5 - still very much enjoying it, the secret identity lies are beginning to unravel, tension is increasing. I don’t see how they can resolve this in just one episode tho, so this series might go longer than 6 episodes (rare for Vietnam).

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 8 - I demand Boxiang & Zhigang (repping for the healthy LTR and marriage equality) show up in every HIStory installment henceforth. This was a cute ep, lots of good communication & tropes. Still not sure how I feel about the stepbrothers, but can’t complain about their chemistry (waves at TharnType). Speaking of, how awesome that Yongjie caught the man he always wanted, that man is a SUPER bossy bottom, and Yongjie is like ...

Gossip

Crazy rumor that Singto has a new BL in the works (totally unsubstantiated). It’s Still Just Us (frankly, the biggest strike against this being true is how grammatically correct the title is).

Vietnam is messing with our heads and hearts by putting the leads from Nation’s Brother and Most Peaceful Place together into a delightful little love triangle of... something or other. Honestly, I’ve no idea what this is. The actors playing around? A new series? An advertisement? What?

Breaking News

Mandee (of Why R U fame) dropped a “mini intro” for something that they’re calling Bed Friend series. HI BEER! But I thought these two (James & Net) were the side dishes for Middle Love AKA Middleman's Love. I am so confused. (Get your titles together Thailand, no one wants you going down the Taiwanese rabbit hole, mm’kay?)

Taiwan would call it: Middleman’s Middle Love: Bed Friend.

Top Secret Together got a full trailer with subs. I’m kinda over ensemble pulp pieces (like Close Friend, Bothers, Y-Destiny) but the presence of Newyear makes this one I’m still going to watch. It starts this Friday on Line TV.

Cutie Pie the series got a teaser (fundraising trailer). Arranged marriage, home/office set, Thai BL staring Zee? Sign me tf up! I am so excited, I hope they can make this happen. Deets here. (Thanks @heretherebedork for the tip.)
