Another cancelled LAIKA project

I was talking to @ayupglitterz about our shared interest in a concept artist/2D animator. Apparently he did some work on a LAIKA film that never made it past pre-production. Here are some character design exploration drawings from his blog.

According to the file names on the site, this character's name is "Bug" After some more digging, We found out that this movie was going to be based off of the book "The Wall and the Wing". Where Bug travels with his supernatural friend, a girl cleverly named "Gurl" (seriously?)

It gives me strong 'Moongirl meets Wendell and Wild' vibes. Just from these drawings alone, Bug looks like a very arrogant yet compelling character, already oozing with the signature 'LAIKA kid' personality. Regardless of how far it might have gotten into the pre-production stage, it still looks better than Earwig and the Witch.

The weird and wonderful world of The Wall and the Wing is like no other. Reading this amazingly creative book will send your imagination soaring!

What I like best about The Wall and the Wing is its utter creativity. While the world it presents overlaps with our own, it is so cleverly unique that it seems to exist in a dream: humans can fly and a professor has grass for hair and summons cats from his pockets… This weird world feels powerfully real, and you can picture yourself beside Gurl and Bug as they explore it in their quest for buried secrets.

thinking abt how azi was truly crowley's sunlight through the millenniums. like, here's this demon who didn't mean to fall, who just asked questions and deep down he was still so good. and he is alone, he's the literally the emboidement of the first sin, and NOT by his own choosing. he's so alone and afraid and just wants a real conversation w someone, even if its an angel who'll most likely hate him. and here's the guardian of eden, who gave away his sword, that GOD gave to him, without asking a single question, to help the humans under his charge and he's kind to crowley and crowley is utterly fascinated. zira is basically the first protector, not only to adam and eve BUT CROWLEY TOO. he protects crowley from the first rain bc he's so fundamentally good and kind and crowley can't help seeking him out over the years. when they meet in rome, c is obviously far more withdrawn and angry bc of the things he's seen and was forced to do and there's az again, so happy to see him and even inviting him to dinner. everytime they met, even when crowley was saving azira, he also saved crowley by the simple act of being his friend.

Meat Marionette continues lol

I like to think that the baby robins' chitin and fur mimic exposed musculature, which would help them camouflage with the Hive, but they also have bright wing feathers as a warning. Similarly Bruce has a bright yellow pattern on his wings as a warning of hey, this big predator is venomous so back off.

Bruce's spikes can flatten like quills I think, so he can pick up things and people without worrying about accidentally stabbing whatever is in his hands. He's very careful even if Dick has the habit or leaping into his arms gives him mini heart attacks. Honestly that might be what makes him start carrying him (and the other kids) via his mouth and in the spine cavity.

Eventually Dick will grow and his chitin will darken to his Nightwing colors, but for now he's covered mostly in fine fur and feathers. Though if one looks closely at his wings they'll see there is membrane underneath said feathers. There's also hidden claws between the feathers too similar to Bruce's though less curved. He'll eventually get bigger and evolve more but for now he's a tiny buddy.

Even with Bruce's cavity, they do still have several bags full of supplies and even more hidden batarangs and other items hidden around the city. Mostly in areas one would need to be able to fly or have very long limbs to reach or even both. Bruce also of course deserves his cloak, long enough to shelter all of the kids, his own or otherwise.
