How's that WIP going with little Ariel, exhausted Daddy Snape, and the monster in the closet?

Stay hydrated.

It’s become a monster - no pun intended. I had posted some progress of it here a while back. I did title it though! It’ll be called “the splintering.”

I’ve had to work on it in small, isolated sections, because it has become a metaphor for grief and got very heavy at points - little Ariel discovers the monster in the closet, Snape doesn’t believe her, and the monster starts to - change.

This is all in the aftermath of Lily’s death, which happens a year prior to the story, meaning that Snape and Ariel lost her when Ariel was 7. So I had to create a whole backstory about THAT and what happened - why Snape survived and how him being involved from the beginning changed the trajectory of Ariel being Marked - and even Harry makes an appearance.

It’ll be around 10 chapters, 100k words. I will be working on it heavily over the summer and would like to start posting in the fall (but we’ll see). I’m trying to make most of the headway on Aim & Ignite right now because I need to get PoA moving here, I’m already so behind with my outline. 😫

“Stay hydrated,” is very good advice - I literally forgot to eat yesterday. My students just came in this morning and said “Whoa, Mrs. B, are you okay?” and the answer is no children, I am alive but barely breathing LOL.

idk there's something about oveta planning for days to kill nakia (her own aunty), sneaking into her room at night and poisoning her, watching her die slowly and painfully with a hand over her mouth so she can't cry out. leaving her covered in blood and bile, with her eyes wide open and unseeing.

vs.

killing a guard (she didn't even know his name), not exactly on impulse but still barely a plan, by bashing his face in as quickly as she could until they're both covered in his blood, and then she steals his clothes and his keys and his sword and then. then she cleans his face, and she tells him she's sorry, and she kisses his eyelids.

#it's just hella brutal to leave someones eyes open when they die bc it's symbolic #when you close their eyes your finalise their death. if you don't close their eyes its like trapping them in limbo #so it's like their death just never ends #so she killed nakia painfully and then made it /linger/ made her keep suffering even in death until she's found the next morning #but then the guard who was kind of just unfortunate enough to be there didn't deserve his death in the first place #like. she could have knocked him out. but she wasn't thinking clearly (even if she thinks she was) #so she not only closes his eyes but kisses them after. the utmost sign of remorse. #it's usually reserved for lovers and friends bc it's like. you're wishing them a sweet and kind afterlife #it's rewriting their last moments into something gentle #anyway #oveta solari #worldbuilding #in the tags tho lol #the splintering

Ones hands can tell the story of how they’ve lived… and how far they have come.

I’m a sucker for Good Dad Splinter ever since I watched TMNT ‘03. That rat was gifted sapience and his immediate instinct was kindness. I love that for him.

Rise Splinter lived a rollercoaster of a life, but as a Hollywood star he remembered the names of all his stunt guys and coworkers, and as a prisoner he cared for the rat that shared his cell. His sons are very close and physically affectionate, I think that says something about how he cares? That’s just how I like to headcanon him :)

It’s interesting to explore the idea that a seemingly monstrous transformation is what pushed him to be a kinder human

the splintering

so the splintering is a prequel to nobodies hero, and its set roughly a thousand years in the past, during a time thats referred to as "the splintering of the continent" bc this is the time period when the continent went from one country to four.

It tells three main stories (Oveta, who builds a kingdom; Ariad, who is tricked into doing something awful + Korahi, the last dragon) that are all triggered by the same event: Queen Nakia, the ruler of the known continent, decides to wipe out the dragon species.

Now because theres three stories going on, the timeline is a little wobbly bc everyones story starts at different times, but the gist is this:

Ariad is a master alchemist in love with Queen Nakias right hand man, and is tricked into creating a potion that allows its user to look at a dragon and know what it hoards. This is ultimately what leads to the success of Nakias genocide. Ariad is betrayed and heartbroken, unable to believe that the man he loved would trick him into doing something so awful and its revealed the the man never loved him in return and then he tries to kill Ariad, who escapes and flees to the south, where he meets his future wife (i love her).

Oveta is 14 when her aunty Nakia's mission is deemed complete, and their entire bloodline is stripped of magic as a punishment from the gods. In an attempt to win back the gods favour, Oveta kills her aunty and is then tried for treason so she escapes and flees to the west where she meets a man named Miezcyslaw "Mika" and later meets a girl named Kova. Together the three of them attempt to build an army to take back Omos, but eventually Oveta is swayed and decides to take the west for herself instead, thus the country of Miednic is born and the Splintering begins.

Korahi is at her cousins 12th birthday party, when her entire family is slaughtered by Nakia's army. She escapes with deep burn scars and a boatload of trauma and meets a water nymph (Kiko) when she crashes into her lake. The two of them become friends and head south together, falling in love along the way and befriending the Makai. They build a home and a life together but Korahi has always been full of wanderlust and she begins to travel the continent to record history as it happens around her, keeping detailed accounts of everything she sees and learns. Her notebooks are the most accurate recounts of the continent before it split. Unfortunately she is somehow recognised and captured in a western market (where she actually has a very brief and wordless interaction with Oveta, only a few months before she takes the west) and is then entombed in lava when it is revealed she cannot be killed. Due to a magical connection they share, Kiko feels the moment Korahi is lost to her and just falls apart, almost literally actually, and becomes the Mahina River.

Some notes:

Korahi is the dragon in Nobodies Hero + Ariad is Atlas' ancestor.

Mika is basically a sword-for-hire and meets both of his adopted daughters when they try to rob him.

Kova is a bear shifter, and has a big fluffy cloak she carries around that is actually her bear skin.

Still thinking about brand new mutated Dad Splinter figuring out the dynamics between his children. It wasn't until I was lining some of this that I realized the unintentional angst in this cute comic, because Splinter seeing how distraught Leo and Donnie are at being separated would hit a little too close to home for him.

Apparently when my younger brother was just born my mom found him napping with his blanket fully covering him, and she pulled back the sheet (worried he couldn't breathe or something) to find him fully awake staring at her. It scared the shit out of her and she still talks about it to this day lmao
