Destiny could also be a choice, she realized. To believe or not, to be vulnerable or not, to go all in or not.

Honestly, every time I read a new contemporary romance book, I'm reminded of all the reasons I love romantasy (even if I'm also loving the contemporary one).
There's a freedom in romantasy that just doesn't exist within contemporary romance, since the latter obviously reflects real life.
Everyday stressors can exist in romantasy, but the resolution is generally much easier. For example, if you find yourself in extreme poverty, simply find yourself a Fae sugar daddy or two and get your whole family bankrolled by them.
You [usually] can't legally do anything about people you hate who hold power over you in real life. You can feed them to death gods in romantasy.
If you want to take a sexy swim or bath in the magical forest stream with your beloved, you can do so without fear of "being arrested" or, "indecent exposure."
You often get to be hot and immortal and powerful in romantasy whereas you have some clown concepts like income taxes in real life.

I love STEM romance so mf much. As someone who studied STEM I really enjoy watching/reading STEM media for the general audience, in both what I studied in higher education and topics I have 0 background in.
Theoretical Physics? So mf interesting, but I could not for the life of me do any of the math for that.
Statistics & Mathematics? Very important applications in all things, but again could not do that if my life were on the line.
Biological Sciences? My personal cup of tea (absolutely adore genetics & biochemistry)
Artificial Intelligence? Honestly, imho it’s absolutely terrifying and I don’t find joy in it of itself (especially bc I have no desire to learn to code and know the bare minimum to get by using my computer), but I still can’t deny it’s an absolutely fascinating technology and field of study.
Chemistry? My original true love. She is the IT girl of STEM and you can’t convince me otherwise.
I could go on and on. But STEM is truly so interesting, pioneering, and diverse; and while there are plenty of negatives (academia can be toxic, cut throat, discouraging, and at times so damn hard) STEM is so damn incredible at the end of the day.
So for me, when you’re in the thick of studying these fields it can feel so frustrating it feels like your simultaneously pulling your hair out and having you fingernails yanked from their nail beds, something about translating them into stories like these, in a way that’s respectful to the material and the people that are within these fields, is so refreshing and brings such a special joy.
Books like The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood and The Soulmate Equations are amazing personal examples of this. I just finished Ali’s new book Love Theoretically and absolutely ADORED it. This one I had the least amount of scientific background knowledge about (as I’ve already said, I think theoretical physics is so mf cool and if I were more of a math whiz and brain for it, I definitely would studied that too) I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. I loved the characters as individuals, but I also loved how familiar academia comes across to me in the book.
(It also 100000% helps when you have authors that are in the field themselves like Ali Hazelwood, bc they have an inherent and personal knowledge of what it’s like to be a women in STEM and how to translate that across paper)

All I know this morning when I woke Is I know something now Know something now I didn't before
Inspired by the novel 'The Soulmate Equation' by Christina Lauren
To say Lexi was bad at dating was an understatement. Tinder? Guys only wanted to hook up. Bumble? She wanted every date to buzz off 10 minutes into it. Never mind trying to meet a cute guy at a coffee shop in real life as she struggles to manage an internship and freelance writing job, all while trying to pay off school debt and expensive Los Angeles rent.
Cue her lifelong best friend Rue Bennett. At first, Lexi was worried Rue had relapsed again when she came home to their apartment with two scientific-looking test kits. She had ripped open the bags and began rambling on and on about her friends being partners in some new Genetic DNA matchmaking company that finds your soulmate. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? Yes, it sounded crazy but she read through the pamphlet 100 times and it actually made sense to Lexi scientifically. Plus the probability of finding your soulmate was 1 in 500,000,000.
What she didn't sign up for when she spit in that test tube was finding out that she had a 98.9% connection. The highest ever recorded.
That someone she had a 98.9% connection to? It was Fezco O'Neill. The only person she had ever hated with a passion because of what had happened with Rue in high school. Now out of the game after a brief stint in prison, Fezco was a multi-millionaire and one of the major partners in D-N-Attract. The tough part for Lexi? He wouldn't have put in so much money as a stakeholder if it wasn't something he believed in.
YES! I'm back from touching the grass, catching up on reading novels that aren't Fexi fanfics, and dealing with all the things that pop up in real life. 😅 I admit while I was reading this novel, all I could think about was how it would be a fucking amazing Fexi fanfic. PLEASE! I'm begging any Fexi writers out there. Also thank you T. Swift and Ed Sheeran for making the perfect song for this idea.

Book Review: The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
I've come to find that reading a Christina Lauren romance is like slipping into an old cardigan. The stories they create are cozy, heartwarming, and familiar, with two characters curling up, hunkering down, and finding home in each other. I like the simplicity of that, the effortless evocation of charm that wraps me up in its arms and deposits a kiss against my forehead.
Everybody needs a dose of connection every now and again, of hope and cheer too, and that's something their books do so well. I always feel lighter after I finish one. Fuller, not just with warmth, but with laughter. And, of course, I always leave the last page more ready than ever to believe that true love will always win the day.
Now, that might sound silly or sappy or cliché to some of you, but personally, I think there's magic in that. And what can I say? I'll always been a fan of happy magic.
The Soulmate Equation was adorable! So heartfelt and entertaining! It was the fluffy distraction I needed to finish out 2022.
Single mom and data analyst, Jess, submits a sample to a dating service called GeneticAlly that uses DNA matching to pair up its users and is predicted to change the face of dating forever. However, when she scores an unprecedented 98-percent it changes everything. Why? Because her "Diamond Match" is Dr. River Peña, a man who not only founded the company but also happens to be someone she knows...and doesn't like. The man is as rude as can be!
Skeptical as all hell that he could be her soulmate, Jess initially writes the results off, but GeneticAlly comes back with a proposition. They will pay her to get to know him. Since she's struggling financially with a 7-year-old daughter to raise, she agrees to the arrangement, coming to learn that there's more to River and their compatibility than any algorithm could possibly quantify.
What ensnared me from the get-go was this idea that relationship compatibility could be encoded in our DNA. It was a blast to imagine River, and GeneticAlly, "cracking the code" so to speak and taking this innovative dating service/technology to the masses. That said, what I liked most was that "free choice" was still preserved. At the end of the day, high compatibility score or not, Jess and River still had to choose each other. Choose love. And I appreciated that.
The side characters were great as well. We all wish we had a support team like Jess's grandparents, they were wonderful. Fizzy was an absolute hoot. Her one-liners shot to kill in the best way possible, making me laugh out loud multiple times. Juno Merriam was precocious, curious, and full of factoids. I loved that she was constantly trekking back and forth to the library--talk about a girl after my own heart! The two of them were total scene-stealers and I was never bored when they were around.
Jess and River's romance started off a little cold and slow, but it picked up more as the story went along and I was fully Team Trio (Jess-Juno-River) by the end.
Though I'm not fond of mathing, I'm 98% positive this is worth the read.
3.5/5 stars

hiiiiii, new books alert!!!!
i may or may not have had a lil book splurge on the works, because i just couldn’t resist it. and because retail therapy is the best kind of therapy. so i thought i’d let you know what books i decided to buy. bear in mind i am trying to branch out from my normal reading taste, which was supernatural and crime related novels :)) so the books i got are…..
where the crawdads sing by delia owens ~ i have heard so much about this and there was the hype over the new movie version of it, but i wanted to read the book before i watched it. the novel has both romance and mystery, so i’m so excited to read it!!!!
november 9 by colleen hoover~ i have kinda fallen in love with this author and her writing style. i was hesitant to start reading her work at first but now she is one of my favourites, so i had to pick up another of her books
the love hypothesis by ali hazelwood ~ this is an extremely popular romance book on booktok and i wanted to know what the hype was about. it is in an academic setting and there is fake dating and a dash of enemies to lovers apparently (which is one of my fave tropes)
the soulmate equation by christina lauren ~ again, i have heard amazing things about this book on tiktok so i hope it lives up to my expectations. it is another romance novel (yes, another) and it is based on two people finding out they are compatible through a new dating app.
the hating game by sally thorne ~ i have high expectations for this book. apparently it is one of the top recommendations for enemies to lovers books (aka my fave trope). so i has some pretty high expectations to live up to in my mind.
nothing more & nothing less by anna todd (two separate books) ~ i saw these two and apparently they are spin-offs from the after series, which i love so i was very intrigued. supposedly they are a sweet and romantic book series.
obviously, i will review all these books after i read them and share my thoughts. when i eventually get round to reading them because the amount of books in my physical tbr is actually ridiculous.
