“Second Duke’s the Charm”, by Kate Bateman
Tumblr media
I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
This is the first book in “Her Majesty’s Rebels” series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a marriage of convenience set in Regency era London and in the country estate property of Justin Thornton, duke of Wansford. Justin is a self made man who got his wealth by doubling the profits of the shipping company he inherited from his father when both of them were living in Canada. He doesn’t want love in his life since he witnessed the deep grief that his mother’s death brought to his father. But as it usually happens in Romance, he is destined to be an English duke after the deaths of several cousins, uncles and his own father. Then he meets a lady at a masquerade, a lady in Scarlet, and he falls in lust with her.
“Scarlet”’s name is actually Tess and she is ironically the dowager duchess of Wansford. When she was only 19 her father forced her to marry the decrepit duke who very kindly died on their wedding night right before consummating their vows. Tess is now an independent woman, she goes to a masquerade and meets a tall dark handsome man named Justin and she decides to have a little adventure. She has a reputation of being a little care free, but the rumors are just that, rumors she spread so nobody would question her. Justin is now the duke and decides that he needs a wife, at least for a while, so given that Tess is already the duchess and that she is his “Scarlet”, he proposes her to a marriage of convenience on equal terms. Of course Justin falls ridiculously in love with her, despite himself. And by ridiculously I really mean that. I recommend you read this book to know how far he went to show Tess that he loves her. Oh, and there’s groveling too. I loved this book so much The passion between them is so hot that it could melt the North Pole. But that’s not everything that this book has to offer. The character development, especially Justin’s, is remarkable, the heroine is fantastic and they are always companions, on equal terms. They complement each other in a way that none of them is above the other or below. There are other subplots and here’s the little problem I found; one of these subplots is resolved off the page in a very convenient way. It felt like the explanations given were insufficient, as it all happened by magic. Overall I had a great time with this book and that’s what matters. It’s a page turner because the writing is so engaging, that’s why I love Kate Bateman so much. For a few hours I had fun and I forgot about my everyday life and struggles, that is priceless.

I have realized something. We, readers have the best pain tolerance, control of our emotions and ability to judge a person.
First ,the best pain tolerance bc when we read we travel to another worlds, start loving it, basing our whole existence on them and then we realize how we won't be ever able to live laugh love there. Besides that,we also attach emotionally to a character,be in pain bc they're most likely traumatized and had/have a hard life, and then fall in love with them. Then we realize the torture we have bought upon us bc they are our comfort character, the person we seek comfort from, who we want to help with our own trauma, and we'll never be able to have them,be in their presence, have meaningless conversations with them. In many scenarios ,readers fall in love with multiple characters. And we suffer through it all ,find happiness in fanarts, fanfics and rereading the books but it'll never be the same as what we could have, but we don't give up ,we simply learn how to deal with the pain and that's why we have the best pain tolerance.
We have the best control of our emotions simply by organizing each new emotions we get while reading. Bc while a scene may make us happy, sad, angry or nostalgic we learn how to not let it consume us. And we get through that emotion and continue the book/series and then start a new book where there's going to be other feelings but we do not let that stop us.
As for judging a person,i think we have this talent bc when we read, we meet new characters and there are two possibilities. First,we get a vibe about them and then are proven right or we judge them wrong and by this , learn to wait before making a final decision, learn to look at details that we missed. We are practically figuring out how that person is, simply by looking closer. It gives us an advantage for our instinct that others do not realize. And honestly they are fools for underestimating us and calling us 'nerds'and so on.
So yeah, readers have advantages, may use them for their own good, but we also know how to control our emotions very good, how to not let our pain interfere with our life and have an instinct damn good about people we interact with.

“A Win-win Situation”, by M. Pamela
Tumblr media
I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion To be published Feb14, 2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
M. Pamela’s debut novel is a promise rather than a good book. I’ve enjoyed reading it very much for many reasons, but what I’ve liked the most about it is that it shows the potential this writer has. Instead of being one more writer following the same trends many people seems to be obsessed with, M. Pamela builds her own pat. I’ll explain.
This is a marriage of convenience between two people who are attracted to each other from the moment they first meet. Leora was cheated and she found out because she arrived home earlier after being fired from her job. Her best friends take her on a trip to the French Riviera so she can distance herself from that toxic environment and there is where she meets Lucas, the nephew and heir of the hotel owner. Lucas and his younger brother Liam grew up with uncle Antoine and his wife after their parents died when they were little. They are Lebanese and most of their customs are of this culture. This is important because it is the writer’s own heritage and also because it is what makes this book unique. Also one of Leora’s friends, or better said, sisters, is Lebanese too, so Leora is influenced by the culture as well.
I wouldn’t say this is an enemies to lovers story but Leora and Lucas clash at first. They both have strong values and personalities but they are also rational people, that’s why their marriage works well and leans into the friendship area. They clash because the attraction between them is obvious and they reject that feeling, they’ve agreed that they will stay married for a year and then they will go their own ways… but fate has decided they stay together.
What I meant to say about this book not being influenced by book social media trends is that it can be considered a slow burn according to those standards. M. Pamela’s book isn’t full of spice, especially not from the get-go, here, sex is a consequence of love and longing, there’s a lot of romance and yearning in Lucas’ and Leora’s story, they only act on their feelings when they acknowledge those feelings, not before. And I loved that.
The writing is good though not remarkable, still, there’s a lot of potential in it, it just needs a little more polishing, and that will only come with experience, which is in my opinion the best thing that could happen to a debut author; having room for improvement. Actually, the second half of the book is better written than the first, so the reader can see that improvement and hope for more. I believe this is the first book of a series so, I strongly encourage M. Pamela to keep writing.

Disappointed in most of the Black Friday sales..
25% off and no free delivery isn't truly a Black Friday sale?? That's a regular sale.
I didn't really hit up the Black Friday sales other than Macys cause so many places weren't giving good deals to shoppers. 👎
I did check in on several authors who have either deep discounts on their romance books and/or some freebie books available on Kindle . Lots of books by Black women authors and a few m/m romances too to stuff my kindle with. 😊 For those who prefer paperbacks by self- pubbed romance authors, check their respective websites for deals. 🤓
