If you choose to try to make a life with another person, you will live by that choice. You'd find yourself having to choose again and again to remain rather than run. It helps if you enter into a committed relationship prepared to work, ready to be humbled and willing to accept and even enjoy living in that in-between space, bouncing between the poles of beautiful and horrible, sometimes in the span of a single conversation, sometimes over the course of years. And inside of that choice and those years you'll almost certainly come to see that there is no such thing as a 50-50 balance, instead it will be like beads on an abacus, sliding back and forth, the maths rarely tidy, the equation never quite solved

The Light We Carry by Michelle Obama
This was more of a self-help book than a memoir or autobiography. It definitely made me reflect on the people I hold dear in my life. This was sweet and joyful and was a good reminder to continue fostering joy and connection.

December 2023 Reviews
Finally wrapping up on my 2023 reviews but I’m overwhelmed so I've decided to condense them all into one post;
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong (★ ★ ★ ★/5); absolutely devastating I had tears in my eyes the entire time
A Touch of Ruin (Persephone x Hades #2) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★/5); how can someone write a 400 page book where nothing happens???
Radiant Sin (Dark Olympus #4) - Katee Robert (★ ★/5); lowkey the weakest book yet, it was kind of boring and although I loved Cassandra, the other characters were eh
Cruel Seduction (Dark Olympus #5) - Katee Robert (★ ★ ★/5); enemies to lovers and polyamory? Fuck yeah sign me up
A Touch of Malice (Persephone x Hades #3) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★ ★/5); this just in/ the two characters argue in circles about the same thing for the entire book… except at some point there’s a wedding
The Light We Carry - Michelle Obama (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); mother!! Genuinely, Michelle Obamas words are so comforting I love this woman
Book Lovers - Emily Henry (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); why can’t I find someone like Charlie, all I’m asking for is a man that READS
Caliban’s War (The Expanse #2) - James S. A. Corey (★ ★ ★/5); do I have any idea what’s going on? No. Am I enjoying the ride? Yes. Strap me into the spaceship let’s shoot some bitches & destroy moons!
The Will to Change - bell hooks (★ ★ ★ ★/5); shook up my worldviews and really made me think about my relationship with men and my anger with them
Perfect on Paper - Sofia Gonzales (★ ★ ★ ★/5); actually really cute despite not being the lil wlw story I was envisioning (long live chaotic bisexuals)

book review: the light we carry
man, this book took me forever to finish! but that's because i sort of used it as an interlude book. a book to just read leisurely while trying to figure out what to really hunker down on reading. but this book was also an experiment for me: it's the first book i really annotated! i'm trying to find my annotating style, and i'm having a lot of fun with it. annotation really helps me feel more connected to the reading experience.
anyway! let's talk about michelle obama and her amazing second book! i already read her first book, and i adored it, so i had a feeling that this book wouldn't disappoint. i was correct. filled with beautiful description, memorable quotes, entertaining stories, and abrupt and necessary calls to action, the light we carry is an amazing read that's worth every second it took me to read it.
i won't tag spoilers because this is sort of just stuff about her life, but if you don't want to hear any specifics about the book until you read it, i'll add a page break for that purpose!
★★★★☆
i give this book four out of five stars! honestly, it was really close to being a five star read. the only thing that stopped it from getting that perfect score was the fact that sometimes, it got a little repetitive. i think the book could have been about 30 pages shorter and it still would have done everything that it sought out to do.
but michelle's writing is a breath of fresh air. she sounds poised and elegant, even on paper, and though she does use a lot of cliches in her phrasing, they somehow don't sound as tired coming from her because she adds this amazing underlying context to each phrase. she gives it meaning and purpose instead of just saying the words to sound wise. it's amazing.
my favorite thing about this book was all the stories about her real life experiences. one of my favorite things about memoirs is reading about experiences that are so undeniably human, while also being so fantastical in some way that it's hard to believe they aren't fiction. it really reminds me where fiction comes from: real life.
anyway, michelle needs to come out with another book, because i am LIVING for her writing style!!!

I watched the talk of Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey gave on The Light We Carry (a book of Michelle) on Netflix today and in a side note they talked about how Oprah, with everything she has accomplished and been through still gets remarks on being childless and all. And it's been on my mind all day.
Cause at the beginning of the year, when my sister got engaged, I couldn't be 100% happy for her. I played it off as if I was, but I wasn't. I wasn't because I knew at that moment that this is it for me. Cause as if my parents hasn't already compared us all the time in a way that highlights how much she is "the better one"; now she got the all-time-goal - she is getting married, probably going to have kids in a few years, and overall just doing "the plan". And I don't think she does it because of them, I do believe this is what she wants, but this exactly where it gets complicated for me - because this is not what I want. I don't want to get married and I don't want kids. Which is like the WORST THING EVER for my parents. This is their faliure. I come from an Arab semi-religious family and this is the shit. I always knew this is how it is going to be and it still sucks. I know it doesn't matter how successful I am going to be with my career and personal life, as long as I don't get myself a husband and kids, this is it. I am a failure. And there is nothing I could do about it.
But then I heard Oprah, and you know, I never thought about her like that. I never thought of her as a childless and unmarried (although in a continuous committed relationship). She is Oprah - she is THE successful amazing women who built a fucking empire in her name. Not someone you would ask something like "why don't you have kids?".
And you know, it made me think how if focusing on other things makes me a little bit like Oprah Winfrey, than I guess it's not so bad after all.

I finished Michelle Obama’s The Light We Carry today, audiobook bc busy but also love her voice. I wish I could play the whole 10th chapter on her perspective with this topic for everyone I know. I value the concept so much, and the beautiful respect they choose to live by. Politics aside, they are good people, no matter what you believe. 😌
Seriously- good book for empaths especially. I swear she is an infj/enfj (i can’t decide which).

I started this the other day after work, and am continued it today while running errands. This book is so hopeful and kind, it feels like I'm being wrapped in a hug while I'm driving. So far, definitely liking this one.
