heard you were suffering from writers block so I am here to ask for a fix :)

imagine:

being Pavitr’s friend for YEARS. I’m talking since diapers. Only to see him run after the same girl, Gyatri. You encourage him, of course. But, one night when he comes home with flowers, you attempt to cheer him up, assuming Gyatri rejected him. When in reality, he bought you flowers with her help and even prepared a little speech so he can finally tells you how he feels.

(I have a Hobie idea that is similar to this as well that’s more abt babysitting Mayday.)

•it was a tall rooftop with an entrance that was almost secret

•you first thought that he was rejected bc he sounded a little more nervous and shyer on the phone

• never in a million years would you imagine that he was there with flowers…. For you!

people saying wonder egg priority’s momoe is good trans rep offends me on a personal level because i STILL can’t grasp what her deal is even supposed to be. the trans boy isn’t either imo btw. he gets the most brutal backstory and his inclusion is very questionable when the whole egg thing is about girls so there’s nothing that justifies that other than the fact that he’s afab which IS blatantly transphobic. momoe’s thing is made even more confusing with all of the trans imagery (her bra literally being the flag and revealing itself when she comes to terms with herself had to have meant something) so is the egg system transphobic or not?? i feel like it only makes sense to read her as cis considering afab people are what count going by the track record, and she struggles with femininity and girls flirting with her (which is lowkey homophobic to me bc it implies sapphics will jump on any gnc girl) but this makes the trans imagery with her very weird. it’s like they associate her with specifically the trans colors several times during pivotal scenes only to throw in the trans boy counting as an egg so it's VERY muddled what they wanna go for...

being a cis woman who’s mistaken for a boy due to being gnc isn't a bad idea for a character concept, and i like the idea of her finding comfort and genuine love with a trans man who can relate to her experience. it's just SO dumb they go out of their way to code her as trans in the process of this, and not to mention the misery porn that ends up being the boy's storyline (the suffering in the show lowkey feels very fetishy especially when you look at the writers’ background i found out the main writer wrote a bunch of torture porn soap operas featuring teenage girls from this video and while i don’t think this subject matter is something that can’t ever be discussed and explored the show is so set on being miserable especially with him in particular), the aforementioned weird undertones of how girls treated momoe and the system just casually being transphobic with no real focus put on that. the system in general is miserable and fucked up and as much as i’d like to give it the benefit of doubt in that it’s the intent i don’t think the narrative thinks the gender essentalism and transphobia parts of it are actual flaws because there’s no real focus on that.

i also think the trans boy shouldn’t have been an egg character in the first place. he should’ve been a real world one. i can see the idea of a corrupt sexist and transphobic system that exploits the mental health of little girls using a trans boy for their experiments done well if it’s called out for what it is, but that’s never the case in the show at any point and it’s not something i trust these writers to tackle well. also don’t get me started on that suicide thing in episode 4 where acca and ura-acca go “women and men’s suicides mean different things; men are goal-oriented and women are emotion-oriented, and women are impulsive and easily influenced”. this misogyny and gender essentialism is, again, never called out or addressed so it’s hard to read this as anything but what the narrative and the writers believe/don’t think is an issue lol...

don’t even get me started on frill because idek what that robot girl’s point is even supposed to be. she’s even more nonsensical than momoe’s thing. the suicide disease or whatever the hell it was is the cherry on top that makes the show even more offensive because on top of condemning the girls for their suffering it feels like it’s also taking away their agency which is very dehumanizing.

Ooooo! I really love hearing your analysis on 5ds characters (we really need more 5ds content here man lol) and I would like to know your thoughts on Luna/Ruka's character and how she practically became unimportant. Like, her ability to communicate with duel monster spirits (shouldn't that be another variation of psychic abilities?? i could've sworn it was mentioned by Sayer/Divine but I could be wrong... they should've definitely explored the concept of psychic duelists as a whole if they were meant to be so important btw) and being some sort of empath(?) (not sure if that's the correct word), and also being a prodigy at a young age but was quite sickly growing up... I feel like the writer's missed a chance to develop her character more post-Dark Signers arc and I'm wondering what you would want for Luna/Ruka if there was a chance to put ideas on the table. Ahh sorry for my rambling. I'm very invested in 5ds but there are some parts that do not fit together or are unexplained or underdeveloped so reading your posts and analysis makes me feel as though I'm not the only one who feels that way despite loving the show so much since I was a kid. Like, I know the show is over a decade old at this point so I guess it's natural that less people are into it now, but I really wish more people posted about it, too...

Ah, dear, sweet Ruka. I would love to answer your ask bullet point by bullet point, but to tell you the truth, I wanted to write a full analysis on the twins, anyway! So I hope you can forgive me, but I'll save all my big talking points for when I get to that! That said, YES, poor girl was completely underutilised, she's got so many interesting concepts going for her that just didn't go anywhere. The spirit world connection is the worst offender imo because that was such a uniquely Ruka thing. Not to speak of the psychics-topic. The concept was so woefully underexplored—hell, even on Aki's end, who has even more of a reason to have that topic addressed in her character arc, we barely get anything.

I'll save what I would have done differently for Ruka when I get to write my big thing about the twins, though. One thing's for sure, I wouldn't have ditched the spirit world and I would have actually cleared up whether she has some variation of psychic powers or whether she's just extraordinary in a different way.

I am not at all qualified to make this post so obviously I will be making it. Basically I've noticed something with how men vs women and queer ppl consume shonen manga.

When I'm on tumblr and ao3 I mostly see women and queer ppl post about manga but on tiktok I see mostly (straight) men. And I see a lot of difference between what they usually want for characters (especially strong ones)

I'm gonna focus on jujutsu kaisen cuz it was this manga that made it finally click in my head. What ppl want for characters and the story is usually directly tied to their identity especially gender identity and ofc the patriarchy.

I'll start with the example that gave me this lightbulb moment: on twitter and tumblr (where I curate my feed btw which makes a huge difference since i follow mainly non-men) I see ppl wanting gojo to essentially have an emotional breakdown or go thru some type of pain and go berserk out of the emotional heartbreaking pain of losing his loved ones or being forced to kill them.

Then on tiktok (where I look thru my fyp so I don't really curate my feed so any manga type videos come up and they're mixed with videos of men) I see alot about who would win in a fight between sukuna and gojo. About who would "dog walk" the other. A LOT about fighting and violence and killing. (In my head I'm thinking why the solution is always straight to killing the other person? Idk writers can get creative with endings that don't contain just straight up killing characters)

This got me thinking: why are ppl so obsessed with the fight and the violence? Then I'm like: well it's a shonen that's the genre. But then that would mean almost everyone who consumes shonen would have similar thoughts. But like I pointed out in the example, that's not the case. Why do the men focus so much on the violence and the women and queers focus on the drama and emotion? The character and their relationships?

Then it hit me: it's about PROJECTION. About living vicariously thru these characters. Men project themselves on these powerful characters and live out their fantasies of being strong, powerful, violent with no one who can get in their way or beat them. It's why they get so offended when ppl bring up other characters that can or can't beat the character they have projected onto.

Women and queer ppl focus on the emotion because we project ourselves and live our fantasies: to essentially breakdown (think female rage?) Essentially in our lives we are often the ones who do the emotional heavy lifting. Ones who are taught to keep quiet or be the bigger person or look the other way. Our emotions are used against us. But when we project ourselves to characters like gojo who has a ton on his shoulders, who has to do everything, we want him to breakdown and cry and rage cuz WE can't do that. It's our way of releasing our need to breakdown and rage, by living vicariously thru him. Often times after this breakdown we want another character to comfort them. For them to be the one to take care of things for once so our character (us) can take a break.

And I notice we project onto male characters and I think there's 3 reasons for this. Male characters are usually better written cuz they are at the focus of shonen so there's more of them we can attach ourselves to. 2nd reason is cuz they're male and it feels like they're "allowed" to emote without having backlash (tho that's not really the case usually. Like if gojo had a breakdown he wouldn't have been seen as weak or ridiculed but if someone else, usually a girl or a male written more softly like modoriya from mha, they would be ridiculed cuz thats "weak". All this would me coming from the men in the fandom too cuz they can't project onto a "weak" character) 3rd reason is cuz we can take a character that men would make into this "alpha man strong" and turn him human. Have him be realistic and have emotions, something we rarely see in real life cuz u know the patriarchy and men can't be emotional unless it's anger etc.

But anyways so that's what I have noticed and being a woman in fandom is a different experience. Usually a good one cuz fandom was created by women and we are the biggest fan content creators when it comes to Fanfic and fanart. Even some of the best analysis I've seen come from non-men. And I'm often on platforms where majority are women and queer and I curate my experience so when I get to places like tiktok or YouTube comments it's like my little bubble popping and I'm reminded of the different ppl in fandom. There are men on our sides of fandom with thinning more aligned to what I have described as what women usually think! But for this post I'm talking majority.

Anyways idk if this made sense but I wanna know what others think, I'm very interested and curious about this topic

So true! GRRM even mentioned recently that he would love to write a book about N so no way are they cutting her or replacing her with Rhaena.

I feel like because this show is focused on the Targ family it attracted the worst type of fans who think Targs are really gods and believe in the blood purity BS so I’m not surprised they’re into Daemyra who’re the poster child for that(no offends to those who just ship them and don’t buy into that crap but the amount of people I’ve seen on twitter making those arguments is ugh)but like exploring the relationship between D who’s a literal Targ supremacist and N a low born bastard girl and how things like class and race(I know ASOIAF doesn’t have the same construct of race as we do but N’s treatment as well as the Dornish shows pretty clearly there’s racism in their society even if the author didn’t intend did that to be the case)affect them,etc. I mean we see hints(maybe foreshadowing even?)of that conflict on the show when everyone’s scandalised over D saying he will marry Mysaria and that she’s pregnant. It also pushes her to break things off with D because she knows the consequences it would have on her while pointing out D’s privilege. Btw,I feel sorry for Matt Smith you can tell he wants D to be more dimensional and maybe the writers wanted that as well but they had no idea how to write a character like him(possibly because he doesn’t really start his character arc before he meets Nettles?)so they ended up cutting a bunch of scenes of him being more affectionate/emotional which led to Targ stans believing they have vendetta against him imo. But he was def one of the characters that suffered the most due to these time jumps the last time we see him before the first big one is him killing his wife and intending to reclaim her land but then later on he self exiles himself like why? If they wanted him to have a complicated relationship with his daughters fine we don’t really know what kind of a father he was in F&B but then make the effort of having him interact with them instead of tearing them like extras who just smile and stand around. And don’t get me started with how they treated Laena seriously WTH was that ?! You make her a black woman on the show and then proceed to have her be a second choice for her husband (with one of their daughters being ignored by him)and dying the most awful way possible away from her family while trying to make it look “empowering”.Sorry for the rant but the way the POC have been treated so far makes me very nervous about Nettles like FFS don’t treat her like a plot device and while we’re at it have her be friends with Baela and Rhaena this show needs more well developed female characters and friendships as well!

I would so love to read a book on Nettles. She(and Daemon) is/they are my favorite characters in the ASOIF universe. Her story does not end/begin with the Dance so I’d like to see more about her. Replacing her with Rhaena will not cut it.

Some Targ/Daemyra stans are willing to miss out on a fully fleshed out story in favor of Targ supremacy. There are parallels between our world racism and racism in ASOIF universe as well as classism. Writers can’t really escape their biases. I hope season 2 fleshes things out a bit because the story can be much more than it actually is.

I’m actually a Daemon stan so I think the HOTD writers do have a vendetta against Daemon. Daemon is described as less jerky to those he loves. In the show it seems like Daemon is really only there for Daemon. The only one he actually seems/seemed to love was King Dumb Dumb(Viserys), but now he’s dead so he’s got nothing.

Daemon leaves Rhaenyra alone to fend for herself multiple times. He even abandons her in a sex dungeon in the sketchy part of town. And yet she is supposed to be the love of his life? 🫠 Well I guess so since he literally murders his first wife and bangs his niece at his second wife’s funeral. At least Rhaenyra only got choked out by her man!

If I was Matt I’d be shaking my head cause the writing is just 🫠 Daemon has recieved essentially 0 character development since episode 3. Thank God Matt is charismatic because otherwise Daemon would be the least likable character on the show.

Rhaena and Baela do seem like extras/window dressing. It irked my soul when Rhaena kept calling Rhaenyra “my queen.” I understand she’s the queen, but she’s also her cousin/stepmom. It makes it look like Rhaena is the help. Some of Baela’s lines were cut which is also irritating considering the lack of screen time for both her and her sister.

The Laena situation is just 🙃 I could do a whole essay on that. The fact that you have delusional racist stans arguing that it’s somehow empowering to watch a Blackish woman light herself on fire is just🙃 I have no words. Like please go read a book on misogynoir then come back to me on it(it probably wouldn’t help, but can’t hurt to try).

That was one of the most traumatizing things I have ever watched. I am not joking when I say this. That hurt. Her book death was a 1000x more “empowering” than that crap.

What’s “empowering” for Black women is not the same for other women especially white women. Black women are rarely seen as soft, being taken care of, and loved in media.

Laena is supposed to be mixed(and the actress’s that played her were mixed as well), but the casting seemed deliberate. They picked a brown skinned mixed woman to light on fire(literally) and be someone’s unloved second choice(again not book canon, but people will gloss over this and try to claim that is somehow is). While the white woman is somehow the first choice and Daemon’s one and only love.

Having Daemon literally ignoring his Blackish kids(who by the way should look white/whiter than they do since they are at least 75% white, but the HOTD writers don’t know how genetics work🫠) is also a choice. Someone said that you could start watching HOTD at episode 7 and you wouldn’t know that Rhaena and Baela are Daemon’s daughter’s. Which isn’t far off from the truth.

You can’t make this ish up and yet people will deny it all the damn day long 🫠 They don’t have a problem with it cause if anything, it helps to solidify their wack ship. I’m going to leave it there cause I will literally start ranting all day long.

Bottom line is I hope season 2 is better and the HOTD writers see fans complaints and try to develop a more fleshed out story. I am kinda dreading what they might try with Nettles, but I’m cautiously optimistic(I love to disappoint myself). Limiting her characterization will limit Daemon’s as well since she’s his final arc, but as I stated, the writers seem like they hate him so 🤷🏽‍♀️

A friendship between Rhaena, Baela, and Nettles would be nice, but they are all supposed to be in different places during the war. Who knows what they will do.

correct me if i'm wrong but didn't the russos say that the events of AC weren't canon? which lead the stggy stans argue that she never married and/or had children with anyone else? (which btw doesn't make any sense whatsoever cus she did infact had children or a child.. i don't know i'm not so sure, shown in pictures kept in her hospital room in CA:TWS) but now apparently it's canon and even included in the official MCU list 🙃

all i gotta say is, try as hard as y'all want to make her relevant Disney, but it's not gonna change the fact that she was one of the people who enabled the growth of HYDRA in SHIELD, who were the very people Steve "the love of her life" fought against until the moment he put down that damn Valkyrie into the Arctic

TBH I think they're intending it to be seen as happening in an 'alt universe' / timeline (idk what the difference is, and frankly I don’t think they do either).

The events are impossible / could not have happened within the MCU timeline, because it's all supposed to be happening at the same time that CATWS told us she and Howard had already co-founded SHIELD and released/employed Zola (1946).

And all the events of CATWS are themselves impossible if that didn't happen, which would have had an enormous knock-on effect for the subsequent Avengers movies. Including Howard wondering where 'Arnie' is in EG, *ach-tw*

And with WhatIf they think they've made her history A-okay by treating Zola as if he's just another fun Nazi side-character like Zemo, and making Bucky a douchebro who's to blame for what TWS did (so the people like Zola who tortured him are not bad or to blame, apparently).

But in fact all they've done is point out that hiring and working with and enabling Nazis to be immortalized and accrue world-shattering power is such an intrinsic part of Peggy's character that she'd even do it in other universes!

(And they went with 'because she's incompetent' as the reason. Feminism!)

Canon-in-main-timeline or not (it's not), AC is still very revealing of character. Just not in the way the stans, writers, and actress think.

It's the show where we find out exactly how much of a rich privileged posh Englishwoman Pggy is.

( Girl's boarding school, debutante, Stork Club, fiancee in the Home Office, brother in the Old Boys Network, skipping from career to career without worry of consequences, handed every job she's ever had, daddy's friends with a Senator, only non-rich friends are servants, etc. etc. But tell me again how she earned her place? )

It's the show where they really doubled down on 'she's the most important to Steve because- [delete Bucky delete Sarah]!!'

While simultaneously stealing every bit of Bucky's characterisation.

( Signature outfit colours, blue and red? Steve's last message was about her not his mother and Bucky? living in dingy apartment in Brooklyn with blond Irish 'room mate'? friend to disabled guys? math skills? boxing? war-record? besties with the Howlies? on the continent not in London? crackshot? whiskey drinker?? Stark Tech admirer? being the damsel rescued by Steve makes you his love-interest?

Literally all she is is stolen wholecloth from Bucky. I guess I should be glad that, now that they’ve nerfed Bucky’s characterisation, she has moved onto stealing from Steve and Sam?)

It's also the show where the character based on a Nazi gets the only female Jew in the MCU sterilised by GSW because of arrogant incompetence, but can herself be literally impaled and just walk it off.

Where the line 'no woman is going to choose an aluminium crutch over a red white and blue shield' is apparently proven true.

Where the 'feminist' stabs blue collar creeps for offending her friends, but her rich white creep friend (Stark) merely gets told off.

Where the threateningly pretty fan fave will be written out because lesbian ship is icky.

Where Peak White Feminist Princess stops her disabled colleague from protesting women's disempowerment, on the grounds that she, the one posh white girl working there, knows how great she is, and that's all that matters. (Meanwhile she is shouting that being a woman makes her a better spy than the men but she can't spot a Black Widow until they're literally kissing her on the mouth. Oh, btw: lesbians are only villains!)

And where POC will only appear (after fans have complained) to kiss her ass (to remind us how great she is! because that's how making a great character works! totally not a racist!) be Family Friend-ily desexed by Plot Machinations, and then be killed off.

Every time Pggy appears, they tell on her and tell on her tell on her, but still don't see it because-

Well, clearly, Disney are not going to hire people who think having a past of collaborating with Nazis is a bad thing and would criticise that in the writing, because putting that attitude in the media would damage Disney's IP.

They can subtly endorse Disney's Nazi past, though, to please the people who are into that.

By erasing Judaism from any adapted Jewish characters, except the one who’s going to be sterilised. (Or adapting Jewish characters, if they’re going to be villains).

By simultaneously adapting Nazi characters as 'heroines'.

By introducing Nazi villains, but making them 'fun', saying they’re not Nazis... but keeping everything about which connoted Nazi-ism originally.

( EG. an aristocratic Baron with a German accent who mysteriously managed to hang onto generational wealth after the Holocaust, from an Eastern European country that hates Captain America, with a big Hydra (Nazi) base in it? Who is a Nazi in the comics?? A woman whose interest in a disabled man is pitying but who becomes overtly sexual towards him once he’s an ubermensch? Who is a ‘spy’ but spends all her time around Allies because she’s actually spying on them? Who is a Nazi in the comics? Gee, I wonder it what it all means! Dog whistle! )

By making heroic characters mute whenever these Nazis speak -- and what they say will be treated as rational and correct (see: Zemo mansplaining what supremacy is while Sam agrees). By having non-Nazi villains do the same things Nazi villains did, but then becoming allies of the heroes (John Walker, Red Skull, and Pggy, all deemed themselves worthy to receive superserum).

By blaming the Jewish-character expy (Bucky) for things the Nazis did (to him).

By pushing the Colonial-Power Superhero in rep and exposure just as a black man takes over the Cap Mantle (and citing ‘feminism’ to explain why this is Fine Actually. These are ‘Margaret Thatcher Utilised Girlpower’ people.)

And by making leftwing people the Bad Guys.

(FATWS, TPB. The logical next step will be bringing back Steve -- the ultimate leftwinger -- as a Baddie).

Now you might be tempted to think Pggy wasn't originally part of all this. Because in the original script she was more of a maternal figure, in Steve's eyes, and he was supposed to do what he did in the comics, and dump her for Sharon, with her blessing, while she died of old age.

But she was always an adaption of Nazi Cynthia, for absolutely no earthly reason... other than pleasing people who are into that (if they needed a pre-serum woman for Steve, then Gail Richards was right there!)

She was always, from way back in her short, intended to be the co-founder of SHIELD.

And SHIELD was always intended to have been Hydra all along, because they’ve been adapting the Ultimates Run of comics (creepy, shit, misogynist), in which that happens. (And in which, incidentally, Pggy is not Steve’s love interest!)

And now with WhatIf they’ve confirmed that working with Nazis really is just who Pggy is in every ‘verse, making this the fourth- sorry, FIFTH time the Same Nazis have “infiltrated” while she was either running the show or high up in the organisation.

FIVE TIMES?

How many times is enough before people take the hint?! SIX?! Why wasn’t one enough?

I like fanvids and edits on tiktok but whenever I get videos about books...dear god, it's like getting slapped in the face. (This is about Stephen King's Carrie.)

So, yesterday I happened to see a video where a girl was complaining about how Stephen King described Carrie, in particular her body and how she got her first period. However, the whole thing was very... vague. What i got was that "he was creepy and disgusting and he should have never been allowed to write about underage girls". (Does this remind you of anything???? Because this does remind me of some specific fandom discourse... but I digress) so I went to the comment section, and 99% of the comments were actually about THAT infamous IT scene. So, yeah, it wasn't very enlightening as to what the fuck was wrong with King's depiction of Carrie...

So, let me ramble a bit about this.

I first read Carrie (in the italian translation) when I was about...14/15 I think. (So, about 23 years ago, for reference.) Bought a cheap paperback at the supermarket (yes). And I read it and re-read it. I think I know some bits by heart. I loved it. And why? Let me tell you.

First of all, as a teen who felt awkward and fucking ugly, I saw a lot of myself in Carrie. The descriptions of her body, which apparently creeped out those people in the tiktok video, felt right to me. It conveyed disgust and curiosity and the potential for pleasure. Idk if you get what I mean...

(Also, btw, all the people grossed out on tiktok forget that Carrie is actually at least 16 in the story so...i mean, she's not a baby. Also the story is set in the 70s if I remember correctly, and you don't need to have a history degree to know that at the time people...well, were doing a lot of "grown up stuff" around 16/17. That's just how...it was. But apparently gen z have no sense of history whatsoever.... sorry.)

Moreover, people were getting offended (so I gathered) because King was "kinda disgusting and creepy" because he wrote about Carrie getting her first period like that. *major sigh here*

Look, i got my first period when I was 11. And it was fucking traumatic for me. Basically, i've been having periods longer than the people in the video and comments have been alive. Periods are nasty, uncomfortable and a pain in the ass. They're gross... they suck. King described the whole thing in a way that felt...real. (and also symbolic in a way, but this is for another time.)

A man can't write about it? Why? No, don't answer... i'm afraid i know the reasoning behind this brand of idiocy.

I gathered that they complained about the sexual undertones. Have those people ever been teenagers? Teens have sex on their minds quite a lot. I was like that and I was also pretty annoying and weird about it.

And lots of the comments were about how King was high on coke most of the time back when he wrote his most famous stuff and I was... baffled. Lots of artists have created great stuff while being high as fucking kites... y'all are clearly not so open-minded and accepting of drugs as you claim to be if you're dismissing King's writing because he was on drugs.

Also, one last thing that made me laugh:

Someone in the comments wrote that "King is considered high art while twilight is considered crap". My sibling in Christ, I can assure you that Stephen King is definitely not considered high art anywhere. He's a genre writer and genre writers are basically never considered high art. Like, at all.

“Doctor Zeigler is just trying to keep everyone healthy, Huntress. No one here considers you incapable, so please don't feel offended when help is offered. We are a team, after all.”

Team is straining it a little; still, Huntress has to admit there are a few moments still clear in her mind when teamwork had flown smoothly, though. She just doesn’t want to admit to needing any help. Isn’t she the one with the fancy cloak and the fancy rifle, the one who’s been helping out? Her problems should be her own, along with everything else she’s brought with her.

She still hasn’t moved when Genji sighs a little, and surprisingly reaches up his hands near the back of his head. The soft hiss of compressed air being released startles her - she hadn’t even realized the faceplate could be removed, and she finds herself holding her breath for a moment as he takes it off, eyes widening a fraction when she sees the scarred skin come into view, his angular eyes somehow far sharper than the bright green of his visor. Uncomfortably, she’s reminded of how Hanzo had watched her. Brothers, indeed. The metal that frames his face makes the sight disconcerting as she continues to stare until finally averting her gaze, mumbling a tiny apology.

“It is not shameful to accept help when it is offered to you, though I can see you do not feel the same about this. I have needed much help in my life, and while I might have once felt resentful of it like you do, I have learned much since then, and I hope you can come to the same realization that I did. So please, eat. It will make you feel better.”

this is from my overwatch fic about my girl huntress and I always did have a scene in mind where she sees genji's face for the first time. tying it in with her trouble accepting help and eating properly made it feel impactful to me, with genji extending some vulnerability to show her that it's okay to be vulnerable and need help. it's a good scene ur honor

google docs, i just name things pretty straightforwardly so I know what it is (like "Hanzo fic" or "X worldbuilding")

if it's a canon character I'll go through anything that features them, read their dialogues, lore, etc to help me get as much into their mindset as possible, I like being able to imagine any dialogue ive written in their voice so it checks out. there are some characters that are really Intense to get into honestly, I have to make sure it doesn't affect my own mental health to dive into that mindset, esp with characters that are depressed since I have that issue myself and it can push me in bad directions if I get too attached.

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?

I find Genji Shimada it be very delightful to write for, he has a very wholesome mindset about himself that gives me a good boost of mental wellness like "he can be so kind to himself.... maybe I can be kind to myself too" and it makes me feel good!! also he's so fucking funny tbh

30. Talk to me about the role dreams play in your writing life. Have you ever used material from your dreams in your writing? Have you ever written in a dream? Did you remember it when you woke up?

I don't recall ever writing in my dreams, but i have definitely taken inspiration from my dreams before! ive gotten characters, plots, some worldbuilding, it's not a constant deluge but sometimes my subconscious just cooks up some real fun, unique ideas

well well well i see people telling you their high school dramas n thought ad share one!! TW for implied grooming btw!!

so basically a girl the year/grade below me wrote fanfiction about the young male teachers in our school. she showed her friends then the friends spread it like wildfire

i remember i was in drum practice at the time and the guy i was practicing with (who is now on the ssx offenders list btw, but that’s a whole other story) showed me the story. it was literally written like normal smut but about the teachers and i was like “ummmm”

the police eventually got involved, but bc both police and teachers had no idea what fanfiction was, they thought they were DIARY ENTRIES and that IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED so the ordeal cost the teacher’s their jobs. i kinda felt bad for the girl bc she was begging them to believe it was made up and not to sack the teachers. then a rumour went about that someone seen one of the teachers crying in his break room.

they eventually caught on it was fanfiction and the teachers didn’t get sacked. but my god,,, after that the school was HAUNTING for more. i remember one guy in my year said in his sc story “to any weirdo lassies out there, i’ll find your fanfictions and out you” and me, a fanfiction writer, was scared people would find mine lmaoo.

this is why i only write fanfic for fictional characters lmaoo

Very random but hear me out, this has been in my mind for a while and finally for the first time since 2010, i can finally talk about it.

The only thing i didn't like about the 2006 animation of D.Gray-man was the filler episodes of Lulubell chasing the cross team. Actually, separating the group as they travel to get to Cross was NOT a bad idea and is actually kind of a good way to introduce Lulubell. BUT the way they got separated is quite dissatisfying 😅 like, would Lenalee really fall for something like that?? You see your double, won't you stay alert and keep your distance? Allen's eye is not reacting, yes but of all times, do we forget the Noahs now? Lenalee has been very helpful and reliable prior to this filler arc, she of all people would be on guard in this peculiar situation. Curious, but ON guard. There is so many ways to prove she's the real one haha and the writers just chose not to do it. For the plot, i guess. So i was really shocked to see them make her fell in the trap in that way. A noah popped out, out of nowhere during the Rewinding Town incident... Why not now when the Earl has officially announced war against the Order? And they are on their way to meet a General which Noahs seems to be targteting and with Allen?? The guy who can differentiate akuma from humans??? And he already met a Noah before this?

[I was actually doubting myself because i discovered that some filler episodes aren't really fillers but scenes (or at least based) from DGM Reverse, the light novel so it's not in the manga but still written by hoshino at the very least??? (the arc with Mother and the broker doctor as an example) so i was worried that that arc and lenalee being like that is actually canon but I've yet to find any written official content with it so i guess it's safe to say that the lulubell arc was really a filler. ]

That stupid act of pushing each other in circles can easily be avoided by Lenalee. I don't really get why would she go along with it instead of pushing those arms down and stop the nonsense.Tricking Arystar and Allen (with him used to relying in his eye) is one thing. But Lavi, Bookman and Lenalee??? Maybe Lulubell did such an amazing job on shapeshifting that the Bookmen, with their awesome eyes (Lavi found the real key in the Noah's ark, right?), weren't able to point the real one, i can accept that. But the pushing around in circles sh*t was beyond me. 😮‍💨 They could have done better, Lulubell could have done better. I know this sounds stupid that I can't specifically say exactly what they could have done instead but at the back of my head, i know there's a better way to do it lol. Specifically the part wherein Lulubell causes the confusion of which is who.

Haha idk it just felt like a very desperate attempt to make Lenalee look like a damsel in distress 😞(she is not btw, if there is any confusion) i kind of believe that any lenalee hate that i see mentioning that's she's like that pink-haired character from another anime, started from this arc. The portrayal was so poorly done. Which evidently clouded most people's reactions when Lenalee suffered after losing control over dark boots after the Level 3 fight.

Tch, my girl needs more respect!!!! Would you not be frustrated if suddenly you can't fight? Would you not cry if you see your teammates get injury one after another and you can't do anything because apart from losing control over your weapon, the enemy has started targeting you cuz your condition seems special?? Thuuuus having your already injured friends protect you, too???!!

Controversial Opinion: Info dump isn't always bad and...

Info dump isn't always bad and there is a huge difference between description, detail, rumination, and info dump. Wait until I say that telling isn't always bad...

Haha. More story theory hopefully with a global perspective.

Definitions

Info dump is a lot of information supplied all at once usually in a long paragraph.

Description is usually a paragraph using adjectives and adverbs to represent a person, object or place. And for writers without an action involved. (Better with opinions and emotions and/or tone attached).

Detail is usually an insert into a sentence to represent an aspect of a person, object or place within a set of actions.

Rumination is usually a reflection that not necessarily has actions, but the thoughts of the character. This may slow down the current action, but should be loosely anchored to time and space.

Info Dumping

People say Info dumping is ALWAYS evil. ALWAYS.

"ONCE UPON A TIME a girl named Cinderella lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. Cinderella had to work hard while the others slept well into the day. It was Cinderella who had to wake up each morning when it was still dark and cold to start the fire. It was Cinderella who cooked the meals. It was Cinderella who kept the fire going. The poor girl could not stay clean, from all the ashes and cinders by the fire."

But why does this work?

BTW, I find it funny that the Chinese info dumping is shorter than the European one here. Usually it's the reverse and (usually US) people get enraged at the info dump in Chinese stories.

Granted fairytales try to shorten things by info dumping.

NK Jemisin said that she wanted to evoke folktales, but also, buried in that passage is characterization.

Info dumping is good for making something that would be long, long pages of nothing shorten to sometimes one sentence. Do you want 200 pages of showing how a town grew over 20 years with a first person narrative? No. That's not the time. So you can say something good about it, but integrate that info dump with other things:

place

character

time

NK Jemisin also plays with poetic phrasing to short up the expectation.

People will notice, but it's not necessarily "evil". And one can also do characterization of object as well. (Personification)

Info dump is also useful in Mysteries where you have a Sherlock Holmes-eque character who has put together all of the missing pieces and you need to remind the reader what has transpired. (Japanese dramas love, love, BTW, making fun of this)

So far her improvement was sufficient—and in many other points she came on exceedingly well; for though she could not write sonnets, she brought herself to read them; and though there seemed no chance of her throwing a whole party into raptures by a prelude on the pianoforte, of her own composition, she could listen to other people’s performance with very little fatigue. You can info dump without description. You can do description without info dumping.

These aren't inherently the same thing.

Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Chapter 1

Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly. So the beginning of this was a woman and she had come back from burying the dead. Not the dead of sick and ailing with friends at the pillow and the feet. But notice the transitions, the personification and the difference between info dumping and description in this piece. Are you really getting that much information from this? Isn't it setting more the mood before the action, thus setting up the tone? The first paragraph sets up men. The second sets up women. And yet if you read the rest of the text, it's not necessarily evil the rest of the paragraph because the rest of the passage, if you're patient, rewards you by tying the theme, and later the thematic elements of the book tie together.

In setting up the tone, and setting up promises along the way to pay off later, it's mostly using description, not info dump. Info dump is far more mechanical in nature.

Even the details within the passage aren't really helping with the INFO. But helping with setting the TONE.

Details

The snow had started that morning. Hye-ja opened the window, sat on the sill, and watched the carefree flakes turn the world giddy. The neighborhood was still, the snow muffling every tiny, squirming noise. There were no calls for the baseballs that came flying into her yard several times a day, no sound of children sneaking over the wall after them. When the girl who rented the room near the front gate worked the day shift, the neighbor children took advantage of the vacant house and climbed over the wall.

Tonal set up. Foreshadowing. But also a very smooth transition to the characters in the scene and also introduces thematic set up. The detail is there.

"still, the snow muffling every tiny, squirming noise"

to emphasize other things: "no sound of children sneaking over the wall after them"

This would usually also be struck down as "incorrect."

But this works to do so much.

Rumination

Of course the US filled to the brim with non-self-reflection in an imperialistic society hates, absolutely hates paragraphs of self-reflection and rumination.

But this is not info dump.

This is also called introverts exist, !@#$. The industry should allow introverts to exist and ambiverts too. The best way to do this is long paragraphs of rumination, tied to time and place.

Seeing the water birds on the lake increase in number day by day, I thought to myself how nice it would be if it snowed before we got back to the Palace--the garden would look so beautiful; and then, two days later, while I was away on a short visit, lo and behold, it did snow. As I watched the rather drab scene at home, I felt both depressed and confused. For some years now, I had existed from day to day in a listless fashion, taking note of the flowers, the birds in song, the way the skies change from season to season, the moon, the frost and snow, doing little more than registering the passage of time. How would it all turn out? The thought of my continuing loneliness was unbearable, and yet I had managed to exchange sympathetic letters with those of like mind--some contact via fairly tenuous connections--who would discuss my trifling tales and other matters with me; but I was merely amusing myself with fiction, finding solace for my idleness in foolish words.

What I'm saying, up front, is !@#$ Stop marking rumination as info dump and not all rumination is evil because you need dialogue every few paragraphs in order to cope with a text block. Rumination is not evil. It gives the inner working of the person, gives them time to reflect on their actions and make better ones.

Also, it's crucial to things like mystery novels.

Again, introverts are not evil. And I know a bunch of introverts out there marking up passages like this as "not good" but think really hard on it, self-reflect. Do introverts really, really do externalization of all of their thoughts to another person like they are on a movie screen? No. !@#$ Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.

Internal v. external thoughts. Let rumination live.

Also, sometimes characters don't ruminate because they are externally motivated. Sometimes they don't know their inner world. These are called by US publishers, "Bad narrators". But I don't think this holds true either.

This clearly isn't info dump at all. Is any new information added to Murasaki's passage? No. Does it add that much detail? No. Does it describe much no. Does it tell the inner workings of this person? Yes. Her point isn't about the passage of time, but the loneliness and isolation she feels by the coming snow. It emphasizes what? tone, a mood and a thematic feeling that pays off later.

I should note here, I kinda wish that US publishers would allow this more. UK isn't as bad, but seriously. Let tone and thematic set ups live.

Conclusion

You know what I'm going to say here. There is no such thing as an evil writing tool. Only a tool that was applied badly for the story aims. The job of us as readers, critiquers and writers is to recognize them and apply them well. 'cause yaddayadda, reading comprehension and media literacy.
