Another Love
Chapter 3: Runaway
Previous chapter <-
warnings: none i think but if you catch any, let me know in the comments!
A week has passed. 7 days, 168 hours since I last saw Jessy. I tried not to think about it, I was absorbed in preparations for the upcoming wedding and bachelorette party. I forgot my behavior in the car and the messages from Lilly I received on the evening of the ill-fated day.
Lilly: I know it's hard for you
Lilly: I know you see him too
Lilly: But that's impossible.
MC: I won't let you make me insane. Not this time.
Lilly: I'm not saying that at all. But it's impossible that you saw him.
This message was followed by a minute of silence, followed by another heartbreaking one.
Lilly: You can't see him because he's dead
I did not reply. In fact, the blonde didn't even wait for an answer. She simply closed the newly opened wound, which was slowly sticking together.
I looked at my reflection, searching for the old sparks that I knew had left my brown eyes forever. I scanned my body clad in a red dress that reached my mid-thighs. Seen view.. was decent. I was like a rose, though not fresh and fully bloomed, but dried up. Tonight was supposed to be a good evening. I was supposed to drink, play, dance and forget about God's world. Have fun like there's no tomorrow.
I heard a loud horn of a car that approached my block. I came down and immediately recognized Dan's black Volkswagen. I walked inside and breathed a sigh of relief as I smelled a familiar scent that only reminded me of this man. It had a very distinctive perfume, and in combination with the air freshener it calmed my senses and heart.
– Well, well, well. Someone struced up like a rat for the opening of the sewer.
I looked at him with narrowed eyes, but my feigned indignation couldn't last long once I saw his expression. I burst out laughing, nudging his shoulder hard.
– Gallant as always. – Dan chuckled and drove out of the parking lot. – You know, you keep on being nice to me, and I'm going to think you like me.
The man looked at me again, his other hand lowering his sunglasses to the tip of his nose.
– Who says I don't like you, honey? – he said, deliberately lowering his voice to sound like a lover in a cheap romantic comedy
I rolled my eyes, but there was a wide smile on my face.
– Eyes on the road, Jack Daniels.
I loved those moments when I got into that car and forgot about everything. Sometimes it was friday nights, other times we disappeared for the whole weekend. There was nothing dirty or romantic about our relationship. Of course, it was true that Dan was trying his luck by asking me out to watch horror movies together two years ago, but I'd never agreed to that. We realized that our connection is only platonic and that our hearts belong to someone else. Dan was unlucky in love with Jessy. He confessed this to me six months ago when I drove him drunk from Aurora. It was our first meeting with the whole group, even though I had been living in Duskwood for a year and a half at the time. I had no contact with them all this time, because the group completely shut down. Jessy was experiencing Richy's death, Cleo and Thomas tried to help Hannah in the meantime assimilating with the whole situation. Dan told me everything. About how he tried to be there for the redhead, but she rejected him.
The pack of friends was rapidly falling apart and no one knew how to fix it. I flew to Duskwood two years ago for Richy and Jake's funeral. And I don't even know how or when I stayed here until today. I left my old Californian life behind for a small town. In the States, I had no one worth staying for. I didn't have a family, and a handful of friends accepted my decision rather quickly. I thought it would be different here. That I will start all over again.
– And here we are. – he announced in an optimistic, cheerful voice getting out of the car – I'll bring alcohol and I'll take Tommyboy on the best party in his life.
Hannah's bachelorette party was to be held at her house. It was big enough to party, and she didn't want to do that in Aurora. We walked into her place and I was immediately hit by the loud music. I said hello to each person and showed Dan where to put the crate with various alcohol. We were still standing at the kitchen counter, discussing the evening ahead. We stay here, while Thomas and his friends go to Aurora.
Finally our eyes fell on the opposite end of the room where Hannah and Thomas were. They were joking about something, looking into each other's eyes while looking so happy. They looked like fulfilled lovers who overcame many adversities to finally stand on the wedding carpet and connect for life.
– How sweet. – Dan mumbled, and I immediately sensed the irony in his voice
– You have to be a jerk your entire life. Why not take today off? – I replied teasingly as he rolled his eyes
Although we always joked and turned it into sarcasm and irony, deep down we envied them a lot. That they succeeded and we did not.
– Oh, MC, you're here! – I heard a loud scream of Cleo who came over to me and hugged me – Hi Dan. Shit, I forgot to bring my phone upstairs.
– I'll bring you. I have to go to the bathroom anyway. Will you make me a drink? – I suggested to which she immediately agreed.
I did my physiological business and went to Hannah's room where the phone was on the bed. Picking it up, I saw that she was calling and showing her mother's number. I started to head to the ground floor of the house, where I heard loud screams. Looks like they're having fun already.
– Where the fuck have you been?!
I recognized Dan's voice, who was furious. I stood on the penultimate step looking at the group of people in front of me.
– Cleo, your...
The woman turned to me, and only then I saw the person standing in front of the front door. A shiver ran down my spine and my feet dug into the ground. The man was dressed in dark colors, and the hood of a black sweatshirt slightly covered his face. But even from this distance, I knew who he was. He was a ghost who haunted me on what was supposed to be my stepping stone. He couldn't let himself be forgotten.
I saw him lift his head, look from an enraged Dan to me. I felt his blue eyes piercing me. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I heard his voice.
– Hello MC.
I knew that voice was the thorns decorating my tense body. That voice was the beginning of my end. So without thinking, I turned around and started running upstairs, leaving them all behind me.
I ran away from him although once I would run for him.

ok, so this is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT ok to refuse but I F you want to: cleojohn: 'oh, shiny!' or 'does that hurt?' (again, totally ok if you don't want to :3)
“Does that hurt?” He asks, looking her over. Never has he wished he could leave the water more than he does right now, with her lying helplessly on the shore, soaking the sand with her blood.
Even half-delirious from blood loss, she still manages a wink. “Better now that you’re here, handsome.” It would almost be reassuring but for the way she struggles through every word, gasping at the end.
He may not be Helen, but he understands basic things: Cleo is losing blood far too quickly to survive it without interference.
“I’ll get Helen. She can-”
How she moves so quickly in this state, he has no idea, but her hand shoots out, catching his wrist.
“Stay. Please.” It’s the lack of flirty commentary, more than anything, that locks him in place. Her voice is suddenly small, and he realizes with sickening certainty that she’s afraid. She knows she’s beyond hope, beyond saving, and it terrifies her.
There’s an idea scratching at the back of his mind, unthinkable (except that he cannot stop thinking it, cannot stop considering)-
“Wish I had more time,” she says finally. “I was gonna marry you, you know?”
Resignation and determination mingle in his chest. He cannot do this (but he will). He does not deserve her (but he will not let her go, not like this). “I daresay you still might,” he says quietly, and her eyes go wide. Rarely does he grant her flirtations more than an indulgent smile-they’re from different worlds, after all-but he sees no reason to hold back now.
“Not really up for... Putting on a wedding dress right now. Raincheck?” A tear slips down her cheek before she can stop it, and he knows time is almost up. If he’s going to do this (and he is), now is his last chance.
He yanks his hand free from hers, forcing himself to ignore the hurt in her eyes, and claws at his arm. Once he’s drawn blood-icy blue-he reaches out, letting a few drops fall into her gaping wound. She watches them fall, then looks back at him, a question in her eyes she never gets a chance to voice. In the next moment she shrieks, a sound that cuts him to the core, and falls unconscious on the sand.
-
When she wakes, he’s floating across the room from her, watching her in open concern. Helen has patched up her wounds (wounds that were already beginning to heal, her new mer form regenerating quickly), and traded her bullet-hole ridden gold dress for a glittering white one (white, of course; he’ll have to scowl at Helen about that one later) that fits better with her new tail.
She blinks up at him a few times, brows furrowed in an expression he’d almost call adorable if he wasn’t so afraid.
“I imagine you have many questions,” he starts, and she shakes her head.
“Just one.” She’s clearly still weak, but she lifts her head. “Were you serious about marrying me?”
He pauses. “That’s your first concern?”
She considers for a moment, before humming. “Second. First, I’m going to kiss you.”
He cannot stop the laugh that bubbles up inside him, giddy relief pushing away the fear. “Whatever you want, my love,” he says softly, making his way to her side. “Whatever you want.”

For the artist asks, 2, 11 & 18 :3
2. 5 favourites of your own work?
in no particular order:
pokesona, the stars are falling (not posted, will be posted with this years redraw), jewel's house, sleeping jewel, jewel's bedroom (also an extra bcuz i really like it but couldn't find the compressed file to put here: be back soon screen)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have a lot of fun drawing my pokesona, it was drawn completely using vector lines which was unbelievably enlightening
the stars are falling was first drawn back in 2020 and has become a way for me to compare how my art has developed over the years. 2020 only featured Jason (he/him), 2021 only had Zero (ey/em), and 2022 includes the former two plus Cleo (she/her, but shes bigender and also goes by Liam he/him), 2023 will include Jason and Ambe (she/her). its a way for me to basically do a benchmark test on my composition and anatomy and colours and shading. i always have a lot of fun drawing it and sometimes making whole new brushes. important note: this one was actually submitted to an art contest, sadly i lost but it was actually my first time since elementary putting my art out with the intent to be judged.
jewel's house was my first time drawing and designing a house and finding different places to incorporate hearts was literally so much fun.
sleeping jewel is just super cute and jewel's bunny hoodie is my favourite thing ever. i have it on my phone and could stare at it for hours.
jewel's bedroom is ALSO a redraw. i enjoyed trying to fit so many things in it, i enjoyed sketching, i enjoyed lining, i enjoyed colouring. though this is actually my least fav of the 5 bcuz i fully believe the idea that your art is only as good as its weakest point. that's not to say its bad or that everyone will approach it as critically as possible. not even to say that everything needs to be perfect. but when i was rendering it, i didn't want to shade. so i took a funky brush and just rushed thru shading. in fact you can see that when watching the speedpaint, i just kinda scribbled the shading. HOWEVER that doesnt take away from the fact i think the rest of it is really well done. i think i did well on the bed in particular and the fact that i stylized a real bed that we own and my actual childhood bed that i would die to get back (we owned two, mine was lost when mum and dad had to abandon my childhood home bcuz of shitty roommates and a shitty landlord) i enjoyed drawing my actual stuffed animals and my actual lolita dress. it like actually has sentimental value bcuz of all of that i just wish i did it better.
11. favourite comment you've ever received on your work?
uhhhh so like i dont usually recieve comments on my work aside from my family's "wow i could never do that" soooo well go with the comment you left on my bunny hoodie design bcuz as far as i can remember iirc it was the first time id gotten a nice comment about my fashion designs and i was really happy someone liked it bcuz im like super nervous about my silly fashion doodles :)
18. do you have any larger projects you'd like to pursue? like comics, shortfilm, a series, etc?
yes! id like House Of Misfits to be a cartoon, tho the show would probably be lighter than the short stories bcuz i don't imagine i could explore Amber's backstory on screen. im making a proof-of-concept website which is technically online and more than 70% unfinished.
i also have a coming-of-age novel i need to do research for called Saftey Blanket about a hijabi girl named Aminah in her senior year of highschool (if i made it a series wed get to see her twin siblings realize they're trans which would be fun but rn they are but lil babbies), id like to make a children's cartoon and a visual novel but i don't currently have any ideas for either.
btw despite the fact that i am an animator, i don't want to animate a show. i want to run a show. i don't actually enjoy animations longer than maybe 10 seconds.
i have a side project based around the album A Constant State Of Ohio by Lincoln that would be a very personal project around self image while having multiple personality disorders (and other problems), but i cannot for the life of me make an animatic. there's lots of ideas like this jostling in my brain, like a stop-motion animation of Through The Roof n Underground by Gogol Bordello, where i just simply cannot which i am fine with.
then theres the fact i do actually want to sew my fashion designs, at least that bunny hoodie if nothing else, and i cannot get my hands on any fabric despite owning a sewing machine

Delilah's Kill Count: Oh Shit Six
Author's Note: Back to gore and body horror.
One Two Three Four Still Four >Oh Shit Six<
Find me on Ao3!
The fifth time she killed a man was also the sixth.
Delilah had been texting regularly with Cleo.
Cleo:
look at sebastian!! he fell into my bowl :D
She'd sent a picture of Sebastian, sopping wet, a single piece of cereal on his head. His whiskers were droopy with milk.
Delilah:
haha! he looks so angry
Cleo:
serves him right for stealing my breakfast
Delilah:
naughty boy
Cleo:
XD
Delilah's chest swelled with pride. She'd reconnected with Ted, gotten a job and now she was making a new friend. Everything was going in her favour. She was doing a good job at being funny and approachable. She was being... normal. And Cleo was great.
Delilah:
i've gotta go to work
Cleo:
ok have fun :P
Another picture of Sebastian, falling face first into the bowl of cereal, milk splashing everywhere.
Cleo:
he went back for seconds!!! >:(
Delilah smiled, slipping her purse over her shoulder and grabbing her keys. She kept smiling on the bus ride to work and all the way up the elevator to the office. When she came in, Ted was leaning on her desk. Delilah smiled at him.
"Good morning!"
Ted looked surprised, then suspicious.
"Good morning?"
"I'm on time."
"I can see that."
He looked nervous, "Bianca wants to have you over for dinner."
Be cool, Delilah, cool. "Oh?"
"Seven, my place?"
YES! YES YES YES! "Yeah sure."
For the first time ever, data entry didn't seem so boring.
That evening, she picked out a grey turtleneck and was agonizing over wether to wear a skirt or slacks. She sat on her bed, towel wrapped around her head. She typed away excitedly on her phone,
Delilah:
ted invited me to dinner tonight!
Cleo:
:D that's great!
are you excited?
Delilah:
yes!
we haven't really spent time together since he reached out
i hope i don't mess it up
Cleo:
it will be fine
just don't talk with your mouth full ;P
Delilah:
very funny.
that's not what i meant
what should i wear?!
She sent a picture of the clothes on her bed.
Cleo:
skirt
Delilah:
ok thanks
Cleo:
let me know how it goes! <3
Delilah arrived five minutes early, shifting nervously on the stoop. She fiddled with her earrings; the clip-ons pinched her lobes. She smoothed her skirt and knocked on the door. Ted appeared, holding a hand up,
"Heads up, Bianca is going to hug you."
"Why?"
"Because I told her about Abner and how you know..." he gestured vaguely, "How you looked up to him and stuff."
Delilah nodded and she shyly stood in the entrance. Ted's apartment was swankier than she expected, with soft orange light and high ceilings. The smell of tomato and basil wafted from the kitchen. A petite woman peeked from around the corner,
"Is she here?", she caught sight of Delilah and opened her arms wide, "Oh honey, come here."
She wrapped Delilah in a tight hug, "I'm so sorry about your brother", she rubbed Delilah's arms in a comforting sort of way, "Ted mentioned you were close."
Delilah glanced at Ted, a blush creeping on her cheeks. She mumbled, "I wouldn't say close..."
Bianca led her towards the living room, left hand squeezing Delilah's arm. The fireplace crackled. Something glinted in the light.
"Bianca, what's this?"
Ted cringed.
Bianca wiggled her fingers, "My wedding band, isn't it adorable?"
Delilah's face fell, "Wedding?"
Bianca pouted, "Oh yes, I wish you could've been there, but Ted told me you had to take care of your mother."
Ted hid his face in the palm of his hand.
Delilah stared blankly at the ring, "No... no, Abner took care of her..."
Bianca reached for an album on the mantle, "We have pictures!"
They sat on the plush leather couch and flipped through page after page of happy people in suits and dresses. Bianca giggled and pointed at her and Ted, mooshing cake into one another's faces. Messy faces, all smiles. Delilah's stomach gurgled. Not now.
Ted poked his head through the doorway. "Dinner's ready."
Delilah poked her food with her fork. Some kind of pasta with red sauce Bianca learned to make in Italy. Ted sipped his wine. Bianca stared at them both,
"So...", she clasped her hands together, "Delilah, how have you been holding up?"
"Mmh?"
"Now that Abner's gone."
"Oh you know...", the nausea started to set in, "...It's been bringing up a lot of...",
...the sting of a needle... it's medicine... the fever, the vomiting... the drowning sensation the first time her powers manifested... the splinters she got all over her arms and legs when she learned to phase through wood... do it again... a power dampener tightening around her neck... more needles... we'll just have to keep trying...
She swallowed thickly, "...unpleasant memories."
Bianca made a sympathetic face. Ted said nothing. Delilah could hardly keep her food down. Not now. Not yet. Please.
It's time.
Delilah stood abruptly, hand flying to her mouth. The chair toppled to the ground, a wine glass spilled and Bianca yelped. Ted shouted,
"Shit!"
Delilah retched, barely able to contain the goo. Ted was yelling now,
"Goddammit! The bathroom is down the hall!"
Delilah ran as fast she could, spilling slime on their nice carpet and hardwood floors. She gripped the bowl tightly, tears streaming down her face, a rainbow streaming out of her mouth. She was too worried about being late; she should've waited. She heard hushed voices on the other side of the door,
"I told you."
"She's your sister."
"She's a freak, Bianca!"
"Ted..."
"They all were!"
"Ted..."
"Is it not enough I got her a job?"
"..."
"Imagine that, at our wedding."
"..."
Delilah wiped her eyes and mouth. She sat on the floor and hiccuped. They stopped talking when she flushed. Delilah opened the door and avoided both their gazes. She said in a small voice,
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine", Bianca glared at Ted, "I'll get a mop."
Delilah and Ted were alone in the hallway.
"Why didn't you invite to me to the wedding?"
"You know why."
"I thought you wanted to be friends."
Ted scoffed,
"Please, this was Bianca's idea."
Her lip quivered and she fought the tears. When she looked up, Ted was gone.
Delilah left the apartment without another word.
She waited at the bus stop, sniffling, pulling her coat closer to her body.
Two drunken men walked on the sidewalk across the street. She stared ahead, not looking at anything in particular, when one of the men shouted,
"Hey! What're you looking at?"
She turned away, looking down the street in the hopes the bus would appear and save her.
The men crossed the street. The first man shoved her, "Hey, weirdo", the other man came round behind her, "why you crying?"
"Go away."
They poked her face and laughed, "Aw, whassa matter? No friends?"
"Stop it.", she swatted their hands away. They shoved her again, "Tha's not very nice." "No wonder she has no friends."
She snapped.
She grabbed the man by the front of his jacket and pulled him forward. She spun and phased, all while gripping the man tightly. She pushed his back into his friend.
The two men merged into a mass of flesh and limbs. One man's jaw unhinged, eyes bugging out of their sockets; the other's forehead and nose poking through the teeth, his mouth and chin jutted from the throat. The new entity gurgled and shuffled, blood frothing up around the edges of both mouths. Its breathing was laboured. They lurched in opposite directions, desperately trying to separate, pulling at the seams and ripping in areas where the skin was too thin. It moaned in pain, falling over itself and writhing on the ground. The fingers wriggled wildly in every direction, hands slowly inching towards Delilah's shoe.
She ran before it could grab her.
It didn't survive the night.

Speakeasy Tonight Fanfic: Neil Season 3
Warning: Cursing, violence, sexual content (+16). Some topics may be sensitive to some people.
This is a fanfic based on how I’d imagine Speakeasy Tonight’s Neil Season 3 would be like. He’s a character from Lovestruck voltage USA game app. This is Chapter 6, here’s a link for all chapters:
https://mydearsaddiary.tumblr.com/NeilSeason3Fanfic
Little curiosity notes: So the Dresners are coming to visit! And I just noticed something I did wrong and I have to apologize for! Lucille was pregnant on chapter 3. Just now, while I was writing this chapter I realized in Neil’s route in the app she had given birth already (she had to because she already knew it was a girl). So sorry about that, but we’ll just move on as usual, Cornelia is here!
In this chapter, there’s a lot going on! We’ll have some sweet interactions and some wedding planning. Then, we get into some Vera and Adler problems and dealing with the Ice Box and all that. After, we have some hot stuff (hehe, missed this) and then shit just goes CRAZY after.
As always, please reach out to say anything you’d like! Anything at all! Thank you guys so much for reading this, I enjoy writing this very much! Hope you guys like it! Thanks!
-Candy (6/11/2020)

              Chapter 6-
♜♞♚There Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked
1926
-This is such a charming little house!- Lucille said as she entered Uncle Charlie’s house with the baby in her arms. I didn’t judge since I knew what kind of environment she grew up in. The house was small compared to hers in Boston. I couldn’t even imagine how miniscule it would look next to the Dresners’ estate.
Mrs. Fitz, me and Neil helped Lucille, her mother and Mr. Branford with their suitcases and we set them in the extra rooms. I managed to be a good host with a late afternoon tea while we caught up on what had happened since we last saw each other.
-I must apologize Miss Granger- Neil’s mother said. I didn’t want to make anything awkward or hold any grudges against a member of Neil’s family, so I was happy she came to Chicago with an open heart.
-No, Mrs. Dresner. I understand you were just looking out for your son. As long as you’ve come around, let’s just let bygones be bygones- I smiled, a little more forcibly than I would’ve liked to.
-Yes, I’ve come to terms with it- She said. It wasn’t exactly an “I’m happy for you” or “I like you”, but I decided to take it- Have you had much experience in the high society?
-Mother- Neil started- I can handle that
-You don’t know how to act like a proper lady in high society, you’re a man
-Mother- Lucille said- Whatever Neil can’t teach her, I can help. The wedding is already trouble enough for now, so we should let poor MC take care of that first.
-Oh yes, of course- The mother turned to me again- I’m sorry, MC. I’m a very traditional lady. It’s hard to compete with these modern times.
-Don’t worry- I put my feelings aside again. I wasn’t one to let anybody push me around, but you’ve got to pick your battles. This wasn’t one of them.
-Well, then do tell us about how the wedding is coming along
-We found a venue-I exclaimed, more excited now- It’s here in Chicago, but far from the main streets so it’s peaceful and the area is nice, it’s greener. The chapel is tall and white and it’s a decent size. I thought it was cat’s pajamas!
-That’s lovely- Lucille joined in- I never knew Neil to be the wedding planning type
-Oh, I’m not, really- Neil said- MC is been taking care of most of it
              -On her own?!- Lucille said
              - I’ve got some help, the wedding planner is there-I added
-No, no. That won’t do it-She turned to her mother- That’s it, I have to spend our time here helping MC as much as I can. She could use a hand!
-I don’t see why not if Miss Granger isn’t opposed- Momma Dresner said
-I’m not at all! I could use a feminine hand. Neil just says “whatever you choose is good”.
Neil gave me a look that said  “That’s not what I was supposed to be saying?” And I just shrugged it off
After a little while, Neil engaged in a conversation with Michael. He was getting to know his sister’s husband and I think he wanted to fix the bad image Mr. Branford had of him. He held Cornelia while they talked. The image did warmed me up inside, he had gentle hands with his little niece like she was a rare stone he had just found. It made me think that he was going to be a good father again. Behind that sarcasm and cynicism he worried, and he had the natural instinct to protect.
-You’re thinking about having your own?-Lucille disrupted my thoughts
I looked at her, blushing a little- Oh! No! Heavens, at least not yet. I’m still awfully young
-Yes, I could see you being a bit green. Neil though…
-Yeah, I know. Believe or not, I know he wouldn’t come up to me and ask to have a baby, though- I thought a little about what to say- Sometimes I get curious about who Neil was before the war, I know he was getting married, so I wonder if he wanted to have a regular life you know… Kids included.
-Neil was never the outgoing type, even before the war. But he came alive when he was with Alton. He’d be this shy, quiet kid, then Alt would pop up and he’d get into trouble. Even so, he always followed the rules. Alton was… loud, he was always running around, talking faster than his mouth could handle, doing stuff that could’ve sent his mother to an early grave- Her eyes were distant, navigating in the past- Even when they grew up, they were inseparable. They went to school, college and med school together.
-And then they enlisted in the army together, were in the same unit in France…
-Gosh- She continued- If Alton had survived the war, I bet they’d be living in the same house right now- She laughed, then turned serious, almost sad- It doesn’t matter if Alton had his parents or siblings… Neil was the one who was closest to him. They were brothers… And then, I can’t imagine what it must be like to not have someone like that in your life anymore. He just disappeared, and Neil had to deal with it
-I can’t imagine either-I looked down- I always thought of it as just… Awful. But Neil must’ve felt pretty empty. God, he ended his engagement, left Boston and everything else behind. He went through so much.
-But look at him now, MC-She pointed with her head and I looked at him. He seemed to be having a good time with Michael, he even played with the baby who laughed at him- He’s never going to be the old Neil again. But… Even comparing with back then, this is the happiest I’ve seen him. That’s what I told mother to convince her, you know?- She looked back at me- I told her he didn’t deserve to have someone else taken from him.
I smiled sadly- Alton’s shoes seem really big to fill
-You’re not a replacement, you know that, right?
              -I know
-Just don’t leave or die-She pointed to my calf- And preferably don’t get hurt either.
If she knew what kind of job I had, she’d be furious. It put me in danger every day. It made me even guiltier about the events that had happened the week prior. But I looked at her with determination and agreed that I’d always be here.
We moved on to lighter subjects and I showed her some pictures of the flowers I had chosen. She and her mother spent some time giving me tips on roses. Not red because that’s too cliché, but how other colors could really help the wedding be a special day.
-Hey, how about I take you out shopping for dresses this afternoon?-She sat closer to me- It’d give me an excuse to leave Cornelia to the boys and have some girl time. Plus, I could tell you embarrassing stuff about Neil’s past
-Hey, I heard that!-Neil turned to us with a funny look on his face- What past stuff are you talking about?
-Just everything you wouldn’t tell her-Lucille smiled in a little sibling kind of way, mischievously.
-Great- He turned to me- I’ll have you know she was always known for lying
-No way!-Lucille defended herself- He was always known for saying my truths he didn’t like were lies. Of course people would believe the older male sibling
I laughed- Well, I’m believing everything you say today, Lucille-I got up-You don’t mind if I call my girlfriends, do you?
She said no and I drove her to pick Cleo and Sofia up to go to a bridal shop Cleo mentioned. It’s funny she knew, she didn’t seem like the marrying kind to me. It got me wondering if she ever thought about it.
Once we were inside I gathered them around like I was giving out a speech- Alright, ladies! It’s time to get down to brass tacks and find the dress, but first, I’d like to introduce you guys to Lucille. She’s Neil’s sister
-Looks like her brother too-Cleo said- Don’t you come from a ritzy family in Boston? Your dress looks like it was designed especially for ya
-Well, it was-She started- All of our clothing is always designed for us, unless it’s made by some famous designer then we have our servants buy it
-Tres ritzy indeed. Think you could get a few designers to make dresses especially for us?- Cleo smiled
-I could probably work something out
              -I like you already
-Well, girls- I interrupted- That is the perfect opening I was looking for, since this makes it the perfect opportunity to ask you girls to be my bridesmaids
              -Really?!- Sofia asked- That’s so…
-Oh, shucks. Don’t be so impressed-I said- Lucille means the world to her brother and she’s been helping me out a lot. You, Sofia, and Cleo have been my best friends since I got to Chicago. I want you girls to be part of it. Also, Hazel and Edith will be involved as well. This means we could take few looks on bridesmaid dresses too!
We were all giddy for a while, excited about the wedding. It’s funny how I used to dread the thought of marrying. Momma talked about it so often and I always cringed at the mention of it. Then I met Neil and all I wanted to do was marry him.
-You know, chicas- Sofia started- Choosing wedding and bridesmaid dresses is so much fun they should make movies about it
-Huh? Movies about it?- I questioned confused- How are you gonna make a flick about just janes picking wedding dresses?
-Listen to this- Sofia continued- They could film it at a bridal store. The crew would be there and they’d just film reality, just dames saying who they’re marrying and their story and how they go about picking dresses. They could film a dame and her bridesmaids or whoever is with her at the store, make a flick about it and then put it on the screen for everyone to watch the whole process. It’d be fun!
Cleo laughed- Whoever would want to watch reality on screen? We already have plenty of it in our own lives
I laughed with them- Alright- I said- Time to make our own wedding-dress-choosing flick here!- I turned to Lucille- You did this once, how did you go about it?
-It wasn’t so hard for me. I didn’t have to choose a dress, I just told Momma what I wanted and she hired designers to make it especially for me
-That must cost a pretty penny I don’t have-I crossed my arms- We’ll just have to do it the traditional way.
-Calf-length dresses are in right now-Cleo said looking around- Let’s just all look for something we think would look good on MC and then we’ll have her try it on!
We agreed and we all went looking for something. After, I started trying out all the options chosen.
-Alright- I said in front of the mirror while the store clerk helped me out. I had a dress on that had long sleeves, there wasn’t much detail on it. It was all white and it went down to almost my ankles. It was pretty and Momma would certainly approve it, but the thought of it didn’t please me very much- I picked this one out because I thought it’d look nice. I didn’t realize how long it was
-It’s conservative but fun-Lucille said- But… I think it’s way too loose. It’d probably be better for a bigger girl, but you’re tiny so it looks like you’re wearing a night gown.
-And how!-Cleo said- I don’t think it says anything about your personality at all. You don’t hide from anything. You are daring but with class. I think your dress should say the same.
We all agreed I should try a different one on, so this time I tried one that Sofia picked. It was so beaded it shined. The glow against the white gave it this holy aura, like I could be an angel coming down to earth. You could probably hear a choir behind me vocalizing a church song with all that glow. I’d be sure to be Neil’s beacon of light in the wedding if I wore that dress… That is if it didn’t blind him. Sofia herself said it hurt her eyes, so I quickly had it off my body.
It was safe to assume we’d be there for a while. And so we were, for hours! Dresses and more dresses were pulled from the hangers and put on. It was fun and I felt like quite the model, but I had started to wonder if I was being too picky and I should just pick one of the dresses I had already tried on.
After a while we all decided we were hungry and the sun was setting, so I changed into my normal clothes and walked towards the front of the store to meet them.
-We have to show Lucille that charming tea room you girls always take me to. They have good food there!- I said about to walk out with them when something stopped me in my tracks
A glow in one of the beads of a certain dress shined bright into my eyes, like a sign- Hey girls, just wait a second- I said reaching for the light that caught my attention. I pulled the dress out looking at it. It had a delicate round neckline formed by white flowers. It was see-through until the chest area and in the short sleeves, except for a thin strap at the shoulders and the little details on the sleeve. Its white grace went down until the calf. At the waist a pattern of beads started that went until the knees. It gave the whiteness a fun touch, or like Cleo said: daring, but classy.
Lucille walked towards me- It’s definitely fun. It’s graceful, but it’s audacious.
-It says you’re a modern girl, but you’re still a classic- Sofia added- It’s certainly something I could see you wearing.
-I think your personality would shine through it-Cleo said
-I’m sorry, I know you girls are hungry… Maybe we should come back another day-
              -No, no. Chica-Sofia said
Lucille followed by putting her hands on both of my shoulders- This right here could be your dress. I have a good feeling about this one, so you have to try it on!
Cleo came back with a few things- She said it! Can’t miss this chance. Besides, here- She handed me some pure white stockings, and these delicate and beautiful white heels- I think you need to complete the look
-Those are beautiful, Cleo-I said holding on to them
-Oh, and of course you can’t forget what Mr. Dresner is gonna see later!- Sofia gave me naughty smile, bringing this two-piece undergarment composed of a white lace bra and skirt
-Miss Sofia, what a wicked mind! Can’t say I’m against though! I bet Neil would love this
-Hey- She said a little uncomfortable. I’m pretty sure no one wants to imagine their sibling in a sexual way ever- You guys are forgetting about one of the most important things!-Lucille said bringing in a veil. It was floor-length but not awfully long. It had a lace cap and flowers on each side.
I took it as well holding all the components that hopefully would create what I envisioned- Alright, time to try it all on!
We decided with the neckline and the details on the dress that a necklace wouldn’t be necessary, so Cleo called the store clerk again to help me out and I went to the fitting room yet again.
-Okay!-Cleo announced- Dress two-hundred and forty seven, come on out!
I walked out all dressed up, standing in front of them and in the mirror- So…?!
They didn’t say anything for a few seconds, Lucille was actually the first to talk- Wow, MC… You do look like a bride
-Now that everything is put together like that,- Sofia said- Neil won’t know what hit him
-This has the potential to make my brother cry at the altar- Lucille added
-Then it must be magical. It’d have to be to make Neil cry, I don’t think he ever cried in his life-I replied
-He’s not the sentimental type, is he?-Cleo laughed- Well, if that doesn’t get it out of him, nothing will! You look absolutely stunning, MC
I was smiling with all the compliments, but it was when I actually when I turned around and first looked in the mirror that I understood what they were talking about. I could feel my heart pounding while I looked at me- Wow…-I let it out- I…-I was having trouble talking
              -You okay, chica?- Sofia asked
-It’s just… With the other dresses, it seemed like playing dress-up- I moved my fingers around anxiously- But this one… This is it. Gosh, I think it just dawned on me that I’m actually getting married- I could feel my voice cracking a little bit- Oh, I love it! Thank you, girls- I said hugging them
-Hey! You picked it!- Lucille said
-Yes, but it wouldn’t have happened without your help.
Soon the dress was in a garment bag and everything else was in a separate shopping bag. We went to eat and set a date to look at bridesmaid dresses before Lucille went back to Boston
And so it was a few days later we were back and spent just as many hours picking their own dresses. It was still super fun! We decided on beautiful light pink dresses that were tight fitting on the satin top and from the waist down it formed a wide A-line and it ended in a ritzy lighter ruffle bottom. I made sure to get two more for Hazel and Edith and gave them a call that night to tell them about it.
x
The night Neil’s family went home, I was sitting with Lucille and Cornelia in Uncle Charlie’s living room.
-Say, hi auntie MC- Lucille said- Do you want to hold her?
I hesitated a bit but agreed- The last baby I held was my sister Hazel when I was a kid- I adjusted little Cornelia in my arms. She felt warm and soft and surprisingly peaceful. I held her fearful of hurting the little body- Being a mother always scared me.
-You know… It always scared me too-She said and I looked at her with interest- But… You get used to it. The entire pregnancy I kept worrying if I’d be a terrible mother. It’s all just doubt really. I mean, it is not easy, but once I held her in my arms nothing else mattered. I love her and she’s mine. She’s a part of me- It was clear to me she could talk about her daughter for hours- It’s a surreal feeling really, like “Wow, I’m a mother. That baby, she’s my daughter”. It’s like, all this time you only had to be worried about being a kid and then you’re a parent. It’s as scary as it is thrilling- She looked into my eyes again- But once you’re ready you’ll know, MC. Once you marry, people are going to rush you because that’s what they think a woman should do right after the wedding, but you’ll know.
-How will I know?-I said, this time handing Cornelia back to her
-Oh, you’ll get that baby fever- She laughed
-Yeah- I chuckled. I wasn’t even sure why I was interested in that conversation- Maybe one day…
We dropped them off at the station a couple of hours later. It was late at night and I laid in bed with Neil. I was reading a magazine, but I couldn’t get my thoughts to stop revolving around what Lucille had said
-Penny for your thoughts?-Neil looked at me, I guess I did look deep in contemplation
-Well… Here we are-I opened my arms
-That’s a very astute observation- His sarcastic tone shone through
-I mean! We don’t live together, but have you realized how domestic we are? We lay in bed together, I’m reading my stuff, and you’re reading your book… It’s like we’re already married
-What’s your point?-He closed his awfully boring philosophy book to pay attention to me now
-We never really talked about what we’re gonna do after we marry
-Alright, let’s talk about it-He sat up
I didn’t expect that reaction to come from him, but I continued- Okay, well, where are we living?
-I just assumed you were moving in with me, to my apartment.
-Alright, but you do understand some changes in the place are gonna be involved, right?
-Yeah, yeah… I already came to terms with it- He rolled his eyes, but a slight smile he tried to hide still appeared on his face
-Okay, then. Do you always want to live in Chicago?
-I think this one depends on you more than me. You’re not leaving the Ice Box behind any time soon.
-True enough- I breathed heavily, preparing myself for the next question- Do you… Do you want kids?
He was silently for a few seconds, those seconds felt like hours and I felt my heart beating rapidly in my chest. He eventually replied- To be honest, I don’t see myself as a father.
-Oh yes!- I agreed, a little too quickly- I really don’t see myself as a mother either!-  I  remembered what I felt when I went out with Cleo to the maternity shop to buy gifts for my older sister, how the store was a complete nightmare
…Then why did it sting a bit when he said that?
I knew I was way too sensitive, but not so sensitive I wanted to suddenly have kids. I decided a night of sleep was what I needed. Tomorrow there was a lot to be done at the Ice Box.
-Alright!-I gathered everybody at the box the next night- This is bad, this is real bad! But we need to decide what we’re gonna do from now on!- In the silence and tenseness that everybody was situated in, I could hear the very faint ‘slurp’ from Neil drinking bourbon, sitting at the bar and facing the opposite way. It would be funny otherwise, but considering the circumstances it got me in a lather. So I walked up to him- Hey, buster, enjoying your hooch?
`              -I am- He raised his glass- Thanks.
I sighed angrily- Why aren’t you freaking out?!
-When have you ever known me to freak out?!
-Oh, you freak out! You get all ‘…’- I stopped talking to imitate his worried face in a mocking way
              -Huh…-Cliff started- So… You see…
-What Cliff is trying to say…-Vince started- is for you to save the bickering for after the marriage. What are we gonna do?
I breathed extremely annoyed, walking back to my original position
              -How’s the leg?-Cliff asked
-It barely hurts anymore, it just gets sore at night- I answered- But since we’re on that subject, Mayor Adler absolutely hates me and he literally keeps tabs on everyone in Chicago. Last time I was there, he walks in and let’s just say he’s very forceful. He’s gonna try to have the upper hand and if somebody overpowers him he’ll kill the,. At this point he’s a bigger threat to us than Vera- I said sitting down
-So what’s the next move?- Donovan asked- If it’s some help, the boys in blues at the station hate Mayor Adler. Everyone knows ‘is type.
-Then can you try and find any dirt on him?
-People have tried before, he is a slick one
-Just try again. Dig deeper. Anything at all-I asked
To my surprise he agreed and stayed quiet after. Then Gerald came forward- Should I keep… Talking to Vera?
-Yes- I looked at him- How’s that going?
-There hasn’t been any luck in kisses yet to take pictures of. She keeps on saying “I shouldn’t, I’m a married woman”, but I’m almost there. There has been more dates and touching hands and she does feel very comfortable around me
-Well, as soon as you’ve got that picture you’ve got to hand it to me- I thought for a few seconds- In fact, Sofia, can you take that picture for me when it happens?- I turned to her. I thought it’d be better if that picture was in the hands of someone I trusted
-You got it, Chica. How about those documents?
-They’re in the Mayor’s office in his house- I pinched the bridge of my nose- Which means I’m either gonna have to be invited there again, or break in.
-Alright- Neil started- There’s a couple of problems with that. First, Vera could invite you to tea again, but she’s got security around the big house and if Mayor Adler is near that house… Well, he just tried to kill you and he’ll try again, not mentioning the fact you’ll be in tremendous trouble if he sees you in his office. Second, you can’t break in because, again: Security all around the house.
-Well, we’ve got to get back in there somehow. What do you plan then?
-Fine, you’re right. But why do you have to do it?
-Listen, Neil- Vince started- You gotta understand that MC is a mob boss.
-I understand things just fine, Moretti-He looked back at me, waiting for me to answer it
-Because I am the one who’ll most likely be invited there again, unless you want to bring Uncle Charlie back home and have him go talk to the mayor at his house- He stayed quiet this time, his brows still furrowed in worry. I knew he didn’t like it one bit, so I knew I had to say something else- Hey, listen… Remember back when Louis Tibbs was going around poisoning booze? And Uncle Charlie was just as worried as you are? You were the one who told him I could handle it so… I can handle it. I’ve gotten good at this stuff.
-You like to pretend to be a tougher bearcat than you are, but since I know you’re stubborn and I’m losing this fight, I’m letting you go on. For now.-He went back to sipping his bourbon
-I’ll see if I can get myself invited to Vera’s house again. Gerald will continue playing her and Sofia will hang around their dates until a kiss happens
-Yea, so, how am I gonna do that without her noticing it?-Sofia said- Cameras are huge and there are flashes, you know?
-Already one step ahead of ya- I looked at Gerald first- You gotta speed things up, ask her for a date to the Blackhawk- I said turning back to Sofia- I got you a gig there for some time next week, they’re waiting for you to come in and set the date, but I’m waiting until Gerald gives us a night. Then you, Sofia, will be there singing. Find someone you trust to take a picture of you that night, with Gerald and Vera in the background smooching and seemingly in love.
-You let your creativity run wild, don’t you, chica?- She asked
-Well, it’s the only way the Mayor will believe she betrayed him
-What if he kills her?-Cliff’s voice sounded loud in my ears- You said he’s ruthless and kills everyone who goes against him. What if he gets that picture, and he kills her for cheating on him?
I breathed slowly- No matter what I choose, someone’s gonna get hurt. I’m trying to protect our Ice Box family, I can’t allow myself to worry about the well-being of Vera Adler and everyone else and pretend we’re not gonna end up with no blood or no deaths- I looked around- We’ve been lucky before, and I know we’re on the good side of things… But it’s like Vince said-
-Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty in this business- Vince completed it
-Not meaning it’ll happen-I continued, but everyone was watching me as if they could read me- Shit, Cliff!- I exclaimed and the whole gang just looked at me surprise- Yeah, yeah, I cursed! So what?- I walked around the bar pouring a drink for myself. I couldn’t fool anybody with the cool boss speech- Now I’ve got to figure out a way Vera doesn’t get killed in the process, just hopefully very fucked.
-Woah!- Vince said and people around me were grinning. Even Neil has a smile on his face
-Will you guys stop looking at me like you’ve never seen a gal curse before?!-I drank again- Alright, Gerald. Here’s the deal, bring her to your house to spend the night with you after that date
-Wait, wait… You want me to sleep with her?
-No, you don’t need to make whoopee with her, just make sure she spends the night there. I’ll make sure the photo is in his hands that night and by then she’ll know to stay away from him because she knows what he’s like.
-How about the documents?- He asked- When can I stop playing her?
-I have until the date night to get them since my only way of going into the mayor’s house is to be invited there by Vera- I took the last sip of my drink- Alright, Gerald invite her to the Blackhawk next week, Sofia gets the picture and remember her face has to be very clear in it and Gerald’s not- She nodded and I continued- Before then I get the documents about the Broiler and it’s freed. Vera has no hold over it and she’s not the mayor’s wife anymore.
-Alright, lassie-Donovan started- That takes care of ‘er. But after that, Mayor Adler is still the mayor
-Yeah, I know. But one thing at a time, Donovan. First we make sure Vera is not a problem ever again. Then we focus on Adler.
x
That night I stayed over Neil’s apartment. I stepped out of the bathtub and was looking at myself in the mirror. It got me thinking… There was no family here in Chicago anymore. I was busy with the wedding, but me and Neil decided to put the planning off for this week to focus on our Mr. and Mrs. Adler problem.
However, that night felt peaceful. I usually got myself so worked up about problems and so busy with everything. Proof of it was that I kept getting sick. I decided to push that out of my mind for the time being and… Relax.
I breathed in an out for a couple of times, focusing my attention on myself for the time being. So I opened my eyes and there I was on the mirror again- Miss Granger…-I started whispering to myself- It’s just you and Neil in this apartment tonight… You haven’t been in a nice date in good little while- I walked over to the lingerie I had- This is sexy, but you’ve got this new pajamas and you know Neil loves pajamas on you. So… How about you-I pointed at the mirror- and me, wear this and cook a nice little late night dinner where he has to stare at us in this outfit throughout the entire meal, while we know he’ll be hungry for something else?- I giggled at my silly acting, but the last few days sparked a flare in me that soon turned into my body getting hot to have that man for myself that night. So I made up my mind to make him crazy for me- Oh, we have a wicked mind don’t we?
The pajamas I put on weren’t pants like the ones I wore before. This one was spicy, something dangerously new. It was a gown that went down to right above my knees, the right choice to show my toned legs. It was loose and flowy on the bottom, which means it was easy to pull up, but from the waist up it was tight, and the lack of anything underneath made the cloth hang on to every curve and detail of my breasts, just as if they were nude, but the tease of a thin cloth on them. A little thin bow fell on the neckline as a tease, an attempt the gown had to be proper while tightening the shape of my womanly figure. The thin straps on my shoulders were too big for them, they taunted slipping any time. My disheveled hair added a charm to the image I was about to present the man I loved to. I knew that was the perfect choice to make Neil go crazy.
I heard him in the bedroom, announced from outside the door I was cooking dinner. I made a small plate for the both of us, since I myself was in a little bit of a hurry. I served wine as a romantic thing, even though I knew he preferred bourbon. As I was carrying the plates to the table I heard footsteps coming from the bedroom, so I held them both in my hands, waiting for him to appear
-I heard a lot of noise and came to see if you weren’t destroying the place- He said looking down at his book- Should I call the fire depart- He paused when he took in the vision of me, well, more like the chest area but… I could see I caught him off guard so it was a win.
-You were saying?- I said in the sexiest voice I could do, staring him straight into his eyes. However, all he said was a “huh…”, so I laughed and spoke again- Eyes up here, buster. Sit down- I turned around placing both plates on the dinner table- Food is ready.
-You…-He put the book aside, then he smiled at me undoing his tie presuming we were jumping straight to the action
I pointed at the plate- Alright with the one-word answers- I acted innocently- Sit down and eat dinner- I repeated myself
He then stopped in his tracks glaring at me- You want… You’re dressed like this and you want to eat now?
I nodded, taking a bite off my meal- Yeah… I’m hungry- I said almost in a whisper- Didn’t your mother ever teach you to eat first, then dessert comes after?
He snorted- You’re playing me and you think it’s funny- There was a hint of impatience in his voice, almost frustration.
-I’m not playing anyone-I drank the wine, enjoying myself a little too much- I just want to have a nice house dinner date with my fiancé, but if you want we could play chess later
-Not on your life- He answered sitting down. His tie and jacket were on the floor anyway as he started eating a little too fast
I smiled and ran my foot up his leg teasing him and then it stayed around in between his legs, stroking his bulge. He was uncomfortable and could barely focus on eating and I felt the most gratifying adrenaline from doing this to him.
-What did I say about your feet while I’m eating?-He said in a stern tone, his frustration now clear on his voice
-Something about the cuffs being the Maginot line?-I raised one eyebrow at him smirking- But I was never one to follow rules
-Two can play this game- He said looking back at me. He still ate his dinner, but with his free left hand he traveled his way up my leg, then he pulled it and I went forward with the chair. My body was glued to the table and now his hands could go up my inner thigh
I should’ve known. Neil is as competitive as I am and I could feel myself getting way warmer in places I couldn’t say out loud. But I wasn’t about to lose. I lifted myself off the chair enough to grab him by his collar and give him a kiss he wouldn’t forget any time soon. His grip on my leg loosened a little bit and as I sat back down, I could hear his soft panting and hungry eyes letting me know I had won.
I smiled and went to grab another bite of my meal, but then he was suddenly past my inner thigh and his hands were way inside my night gown. I don’t know if it was out of surprise or because his cold fingers felt good but my eyes closed, my head tilted backwards I let a moan out of my lips that I couldn’t hold in. When I opened my eyes, I cursed in my head for letting him win that one, but seeing his reaction to me let me know it was a tie. He was one second away from going mad.
-This…-His voice was almost a growl- This stupid table is in the way.
I laughed lowly- We have to finish dinner- I went to grab my fork again trying to win for good, but he got up and was around the table before I could protest
-No, we don’t- He picked me up and I smiled wrapping my legs around his waist- You messed with me enough- It was the last thing he said before kissing me
He carried me all the way to the bedroom and let me down in the bed- I’m just getting started, Neil- I said sitting up, but he insistently pushed me to lay down again
-No, you’re not- He pushed my gown up to my hips- This was your plan all along, wasn’t it?
-What plan?- I gave him a side smile- I was just eating
-This outfit is more for something like this-He said pushing up my thighs and placing his head in between my legs, and suddenly words didn’t matter anymore
We were in a competition to drive each other crazy and we both ended up losing our minds for one another. Soon he yanked up my gown some more and pulled down the top to place kisses all along my chest and neck, and then got rid of everything else he was wearing before he was inside me and our hips were meeting in repeated motions. I gasped for air as he made a point of moving while looking right into my eyes and holding my head still by my hair, making sure I had no choice but to look back. He enjoyed letting me know that he was the one that was doing this to me. Little did he know from the bottom I could see I was doing the same to him.
At some point the gown was completely off my body and I was on the top, then I was on the bottom again, then facing the bed, then on my back, then sitting on his lap. Then, I lost track of how much time went by and how many ways we made love to one another, completely lost in our hunger.
I remember the climax, I remember crying out his name and I remember him whispering mine. But for some reason I must’ve been so dizzy after I don’t remember falling asleep. I don’t even remember if we talked after everything. Next thing I knew I felt the rays of sun hit my face, and my eyes slowly open to greet the morning. It was a sunny day and the first thing I did was smile. My body felt sore and it was a good feeling. I couldn’t help but close my eyes again and giggle as I remembered the events from last night, every touch and every sensation. I turned around and faced Neil who was still asleep. His broad chest went up and down as he breathed, so I turned around facing him to watch him for a few minutes.
After a while, I got up wearing a robe. I cleaned up the mess we made in the kitchen the night before. When I went back to the bedroom he was still sleeping. I looked at the clock and it was almost noon. So I decided it was perfectly okay to wake him up. I sat on top of him and leaned down to kiss his face all over. It soon woke him up and he smiled once the confusion went away. He started chuckling as I kept kissing him- Morning, buster- Then I met his lips and the kiss was profound. It was pure love. I was madly in love with this man who drove me crazy from the first night I met him. I pulled myself back to stare into his eyes, then his hand reached up as he stroked my cheek, pulling my hair behind my ear. He looked very serious, so I asked him- What…?
He shook his head- I just… I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy before
I smiled, kissing him again- You’re such a romantic
He snorted- Don’t take it for granted, MC. You like pushing your limits.
-Shut up, will ya?- I said and then kissed him again- You know, this is the happiest I’ve been too
-I love you-He whispered to me
-I love you, Neil- I said back to him, kissing him one last time before pulling him to get up- Now, breakfast?
He adjusted himself sitting up on the bed staring at me, still sitting on his lap- In a minute-He said undoing my robe and pushing it off my shoulders, so my body was nude in front of him
-Right now?- I raised an eyebrow
He hugged me pulling me closer for a kiss- Right now.

That day, nothing could ruin my mood. That afternoon I was out with Cleo and I couldn’t stop grinning.
-You look like the cat who ate the canary. Figure you had a good night with the doc?- She teased
-Oh, just the best. And the dress is bought, the ring is on my finger, the venue and flowers are picked, we set the date… Just a few more things and a little bit of time and I’ll have nights like these for the rest of my life.
She laughed as we went around Menken’s- You’re high up on the clouds. I was worried about you being tired and stressed and all with this stuff about Vera and Mayor Adler, but I’m happy to see you like this.
-I don’t know, Cleo, I have a good feeling. I feel so at peace… It’s like I know everything is going to be alright
-I bet, kiddo. You are glowing.
I don’t know what it was about that that sent a chill down my spine. And then it came to me, is it ever a good thing when a Jane tells you you’re glowing? Maybe, but at the moment it didn’t come across to me as something good. For some reason it made me think of the last few months and how I never had time to focus on myself. Which means I could let obvious signs from my body that it something stirred up inside escape.
-I’m…-I stopped in my tracks, looking at her- I’m glowing?
-Yea, you’re really shining and all that- She looked back, her smile faded when she saw my serious expression. On her face I could see she realized what it was that got me like this- I mean…! Not the “congrats mommy” glow, it’s the “I was barney-mugging last night” glow!
But the somber look didn’t disappear from my face- Am I really glowing?
-Yes, honey, but a good night with a good man will do that. Don’t be all worried. You get all that and then I’ll get like that.
-I haven’t had my period in so long…-I murmured in an urgent whisper to her- I didn’t have it in November… And now that I think about it, I didn’t have it in October either!- I looked at her- I’ve been so worried about Vera and the whole Ice Box and meeting Neil’s family and him mine, and then they visited and then Uncle Charlie… I didn’t think about it just now!- I was now grabbing onto the dress I was seeing tightly- I am totally knocked up!
-Horse feathers, MC! You’re so skinny. It’s stress.
-And Cleo!- I gasped- I’ve been so emotional, and then I was feeling all nauseous and tired and I threw up last week! Oh, and how my breasts look so nice and how I’ve been… Oh my God, I need to sit down- I said going outside to a bench and Cleo went after me
-Hey, hey!-She held my arm- You’re getting ahead of herself, honey. It could be all stress
-And now I’m glowing!-I buried my face in my hands- I am so pregnant!
-MC!- She said loudly getting my attention- Let’s go to the doctor and have a test done before you freak out- She shook me holding my arms- Listen, I’ll go with you. Say you’re going shopping with me again and if it’s just a scare you don’t even have to say anything to Neil
-Alright… Yeah, you’re right. It could just be my head. Shouldn’t freak out, right?-I looked at her
-Not at all. You can’t just puke and then “Woah, I’m preggo”
I laughed agreeing- You’re right. Sorry, Cleo. Stress and all that. Say, I’ll drive you to the Ice Box.
X
Or maybe I should have started screaming right there. Because a few days after I sat in the doctor’s office with Cleo. That night, I had to put on my best face for tea with Vera and this doctor just sat right in front of me, and had the courage to congratulate me.
-Your due date will be around the first two weeks of June
-How?!-It was the first thing I asked
              -I’m sorry, Miss…
-Granger. And I asked how do you know I’m… I’m…
-Pregnant?- He said the word I couldn’t say at the moment- Well, there’s a hormone pregnant women produce. In your urine test we took from you, we inject it in a small animal, like a bunny or frog, and then if you’re pregnant that animal will start ovulating, which means the hormone for pregnancy is there. In your case, it showed the hormone is present. Based on what you told me about the last time you menstruated… Yes, first two weeks of June sounds right.
-That’s absolutely crackers! I… Cleo!- I looked at her, she looked back wordlessly and then I looked at the doctor again- There must be some mistake, I can’t be pregnant.
-Well, you are, miss. Should be at about ten weeks now. Which comes to a worry I have. I noticed you’re still ‘Miss’ Granger.
-I’m engaged!- I corrected him quickly, didn’t want the doctor going to blabber to no one about a kid out of wedlock
-Better hurry that wedding then, miss. You’ll start showing very soon- He got up, looking all respectable- A child to any woman is a blessing. Women are meant to be mothers, so don’t worry about it. Congratulations on your wedding and baby. I would schedule the next appointment with the secretary up front and…- after a moment I tuned out. He kept saying stuff I had to do from now on and I’m sure Cleo was listening to all of it closely for me, but my head was spinning. I don’t even remember how we got out of there and before I knew I was sitting on Uncle Charlie’s couch
The silence that reigned was incredibly uncomfortable. But… I didn’t know what to say. I mean, what was the right thing to say? The more I thought about it, the further away I was from convincing myself it was true. I kept repeating in my head “I’m pregnant”. But something in my head kept saying “No, Edith is pregnant. She’s the one who was always meant to be a mother, not me.” And then it went right back to “I am pregnant”. After a while, Cleo broke the quietness.
-I won’t tell anyone. I’ll let you do it- Cleo said- You’ll be fine.
-Yea… Sure…- I said lowly- I’m just waiting until I wake up and then realize it’s not real
She sighed- Just give it a little bit of time, focus on the Ice Box and the wedding for now, you’ll come to terms with it.
I pondered my options for a while. I could sit here and cry or scream or give up. But that wasn’t me, that was never me and I wouldn’t start now. So I made the choice I knew I had to for the time being- No one can know. Not until this whole ordeal is done.
-Are you sure Neil shouldn’t know?-She looked at me worried
-He’ll be the first to know…-I sat down- After we defeat Vera and Adler
              -MC…
-I won’t hear it, Cleo. You know if Neil finds out he’ll take me completely off the board. The Ice Box can’t win without their boss. I need to go get the documents and I need to make all the decisions.
              -They can handle themselves, MC
-I’m sure they can. However, the Ice Box is my business, Cleo. I’m not sitting on the bleachers while my team plays
-Fine. I’m game. As long as you don’t put yourself in mortal danger, or risk losing the baby.
-I won’t. I’ll see you at the box tonight?
              -You’ll be okay, kiddo?
-I’ll be fine, really. I just need some time on my own
And once Cleo let herself out, I felt the sudden urge to get spend some time getting myself accustomed to the idea that I was going to be a mother. I drove myself back to that maternity shop I visited with her a few months ago. No longer looking for presents for Edith, I walked around trying to pretend this wasn’t such a bad thing. I was looking at some little toys when a clerk approached me.
-Are you shopping for yourself?- She asked
I could say no. I could tell her my sister was pregnant and I was shopping for her. I wasn’t showing through the dress and I could just pretend nothing was happening. But then… I figured I came here for a reason
-Yeah… I just found out early this morning. Doctor said I should be around ten weeks now.
-Wow!- She laughed eagerly- That’s so exciting, your husband must be so happy, Mrs…?
Oh yeah, of course a woman is ought to be married to be pregnant- Oh… Huh… Dresner. Mrs. Dresner
It was the first time I referred to myself as Mrs. Although I loved how it sounded, something bothered me. I know Neil was the furthest thing from the nightmare Momma always hoped I’d marry, but I still seemed to find myself following in the footsteps she always dreamed I would. I was carrying a doctor’s baby who came from a rich family from Boston. Was I losing myself?
-Are you alright, Mrs. Dresner?- The store clerk asked and I imagine I was lost in my own head again
-Oh yes! You now… Just emotional. And well, my husband doesn’t know yet.
-Oh I see, I can help you look around for stuff!- She had an annoying acute voice. I could tell from the way she carried herself she has old-fashioned ideals.
-MC?- I heard Neil’s voice. My heart jumped a little as I looked towards the door and he was standing there- I was walking to the… To Charlie’s store and I saw you through the window- He walked towards me- Are you sending another gift to Edith?
-Yes- I turned around to the store clerk giving her a look that said ‘please play along’- My sister is pregnant, so that’s what I needed help with
She smiled, a little too amused to be aware of my little secret as I turned back to Neil- Do you wanna help?
              -Uh… You see… It’s pretty late so-
-Nah-uh!- I walked over to him, pulling him to where I was before- You can walk me to the store later. Let’s spend some quality time together.
-Oh, this is your husband!-She looked up at him, even with an appraising eye I didn’t miss.
-Yes!- I smiled- We are good now, if we need any help I’ll let you know!
              - You’re really gonna make me stay in this store with you?- Neil complained
-Hey, what’s so bad about this store?
-Are you alright?- He asked- It’s full of baby gowns and it smells like baby powder. Makes me think about the future generations and how we’re all lost in their hands.
-Alright, your cynical wet-blanket. I’m trying to be happy for my sister- I turned back to see the little newborn clothes- Wouldn’t it be great if you could know the sex of the baby before it was born? I don’t know whether to buy her cute pink stuff or blue- I turned around to see him staring at me, pensively- What…?
-…-That was his answer for the first few seconds, then he turned his eyes to what I was looking at with a sigh- Why don’t you buy this one?- He pointed- It’s just a white gown, useful for a newborn, leave the gender-specific clothes to her.
-Okay- I said, going to pay for it before Neil offered to do it himself- See? You can be helpful when you want!- I grabbed his arm to leave once I had the bag with me
              He didn’t reply again
-Neil? Hello? Calling Dr. Neil?-I asked
-Sorry. I’m just in a thinking mood. Must’ve been the wonderful trip to a baby store you took me on. First you make me think about the past, now about the future.- He looked at me, taking my arm- To the Ice Box, then?
-Yeah, I want to hear how Gerald’s going along and then I have a temperance meeting tomorrow. I can get Vera to invite me for tea after and then finally-
I stopped talking once I saw police officers speeding past us
-Wowsers… Where do you think they’re going?
-I guess there-He pointed unenthusiastically. From one of Chicago’s nicest neighborhoods, I could see the public gathering like the president had come to town. Then I realized it looked familiar.
My feet started taking me towards the inferno that surrounded the ritziest place I had been to. Neil started to follow me and call my name, but it was like I was in a trance. I made my way towards the street and the people that gathered around to watch. The mayor sat in a stretcher with doctors surrounding him in front of his gracious mansion, talking to police officers and the media that surrounded him.
-What happened?- I asked one lady who stood there and she turned to me
-Vera Adler, the mayor’s wife. She tried to kill the Mayor Adler and then left!
Neil whistled, more amused than surprised-Seems like someone in the hypocrite elite of Chicago got their fair share today. They’re not so different from scoundrels like us- He said getting a cigarette, lighting it up- There’s no rest for the wicked.
Leave it to this contrary son of a gun to be bored with loud music and people laughing and dancing and be amused by attempted murder
I turned around and saw the Ice Box’s personal Irish flat foot- Donovan!- I called and soon he came over- What the hell happened?
-Well, lassie. There was an attempt on the mayor’s life.
-This much I heard- I whispered- What actually happened? Why would Vera try to kill him?
-The version dat’s coming out in the papers it’s that the mayor found out she was cheating on him with multiple men and guess what? She is the new talk between the ladies. How can a respectable woman just sleep around like that? They started arguing because the mayor felt so betrayed, then she got a gun and took three shots at him, ya see?
I looked at him- Alright, buster, there’s more to the story. What actually happened?
He lowered his voice- Seems like your ‘picture’ got to the Mayor a little early.
              -Gerald…?
-No. Not exactly- He pulled me and Neil aside- The Mayor knew Vera was cheating on him. But the truth is, lassie, you were wrong. The mayor doesn’t care about being cheated on, he doesn’t care if Vera sleeps around. If Vera steered the other way and kissed women he wouldn’t get her arrested
-So if the picture we were planning got to his hands, he wouldn’t have cared
-Turns out the Mayor ain’t big on love and respect, lassie.
I sighed- I should’ve guessed that. But it still doesn’t explain what happened.
-Vera was passing off information about the Mayor around. Turns out she wanted to dishonor him or something- He looked around before continuing- That big speakeasy she was building, she was working with Gerald’s gang to expand and paying off new people. All the money it takes to do that wasn’t coming from her pocket
-She was stealing from Adler- Neil said- Seems like she has quite the criminal mind
-It’s not just that. Vera wanted to have more power than Mayor Adler.- Donovan continued- She wanted control over him like she tried to have control over MC, like she did with Gerald. So she started spreading around rumors, going out on dates with politicians that are close to Adler. She’s been playing her manipulation cards and people started turning on Mayor, being less afraid of him.
-Wow- I said- She starts opening her mouth and the Mayor loses his grip on Chicago. His biggest nightmare
-I ‘eard this from another dirty cop. She also stole information about him. She tries to blackmail him and say if he doesn’t do what she wants, she’ll destroy ‘im.
-Wouldn’t put that past Vera-I said
-So Mayor Adler finds himself at risk of losing his power of his city and his woman climbing up the stairs to stomp on him: Stealing money, passing information, literally making the mayor look like a joke to everyone and she look like the queen in the process. She’s been using him and going behind his back-
-Which is the actual ultimate betrayal- I ended it for him- Here I was thinking it was child’s play, that he would have his heart broken to see her going out with Gerald…
-The Mayor isn’t a teenager- Neil said- We underestimated him.
-So,- Donovan resumed- He hears about all this, but for now it’s all just suspicions, he doesn’t have any proof. One of the mayor’s most trusted officers sees Vera and Gerald out on the “date” you put together. He knows O’Fallon is a mob boss and for Mayor Adler, that pretty much confirms the whole thing. So she gets home and they argue, she gets a gun, tried to kill him and then leaves Chicago
-That doesn’t make sense though. Vera obviously doesn’t know how to shoot and it’s not like her to do that- I said
-Besides- Neil pointed at the mayor- She would need to be a really good shot to shoot the mayor in three exact non-fatal spots.
              -What do you mean?-I asked
-Look at it. The bullet holes are in three strategic spots, like whoever shot him wanted to make sure he didn’t die.
-Which means this was orchestrated- Donovan said- Besides, Vera just disappeared after coming home. Her driver is still in the house and no one saw her leave or at the station. She hasn’t been seen since
I looked at the whole scene for a second before speaking- For all we know, he could have had her killed
-We got what we were lookin’ for in the end- Donovan said- Even if it wasn’t the way we planned, lassie. Vera is disgraced. She’s a jezebel who sleeps around town and commits adultery left and right and it’s in all the papers for everyone to see. She will no longer be seen as a respectable lady.
-And on top of that- Neil started- She’ll never have any kind of power in Chicago again, since it all depended on her image.
-If she’s even alive, she just disappeared.-I lowered my head and suddenly felt it spinning. I should’ve been happier that our Vera problem was solved. But something in my gut told me the mayor would be the biggest problem the Ice Box had ever faced- We didn’t get this result because we wanted to. Vera did the Mayor wrong and he completely ruined her and then probably killed her
-And he gets to be the victim in the end. The poor mayor who was cheated on, got his heart broken and almost got killed.- Neil said- Humanity is a sickening thing nowadays
Donovan chuckled, though there was no humor in his voice- This ain’t humanity, doc- He looked back at the house- Mayor Adler is as far away from it as possible
-I’ll get MC away from here- Neil told Donovan- We’ll meet at the Ice Box tonight
Donovan agreed and Neil started pulling me away. My head kept spinning and spinning and my vision started to blur out suddenly
-MC!- I heard Neil’s distant, but extremely concerned voice calling my name
I don’t remember anything that happened after that.
_____
Author notes: Yes, Mayor Adler is the true villain of this story and he’s got a tight grip on Chicago. Plus, he’s insane, truly insane. The next few chapters the gang will be trying to deal with a man as powerful as him and they’ll realize they need to go to extremes this time to keep the Ice Box safe. Then there’s the fact MC just found out she’s expecting (our future Alton) and she’s got a wedding to worry about. Besides, let’s just say there’s an Uncle in Columbus that decided he ain’t too old to help and he’s still got what it takes to make his one big move to save Chicago with his little gang before he retires as mob boss. Uncle Charlie is coming back!
Thank you!!

MUSE
Chosen Skeleton: The Gambler
Muse Name: Jaqueline ‘La Spadille’ Dubois
Muse Age: 32
Chosen FC: Gal Gadot
Muse Occupation: Officially an unemployed Parisian, unofficially-officially a card shark, and officially-UNofficially a high-paid escort when she’s down and out (like right now lolz, but she’s lowkey af)
Muse Affiliation & Frequent Haunts: Jacqueline goes wherever the money flows — that is her affiliation.  Though her checkbook doesn’t reflect the furs that drape over her shoulders and the diamonds that glisten on her chest, no one would ever know as she’s constantly frequenting Hotel Montmartre or La Gavrouche.  She brushes shoulders with the Parisian elite as if she still belongs, and to the blind eye, she does — because that’s what she wants them to believe.  La Spadille is a born and bred Parisian, and now a broke one at that, but she knows how to change that.  While she’s down and out right now, she’s almost always found testing her luck at anything from dominos to spades at The Blue Lotus, always up to date on the changing password.  And if Jacqui doesn’t want to risk losing, there’s always a card table with drunk working class men on their break at the Street Market to be found and hustled.  She knows her city, and she knows where to have her fun; Jacqueline is a regular at both L’Enfer and Le Ciel, and as an unmarried femme fatale, she knows how to use the cards she was dealt to enjoy the clubs’ pleasures even if she can’t afford it herself.
Direct from Le Petit Journal: La Spadille ou La Dame de Cœurs — which side of Mademoiselle Dubois will the streets of Paris receive tonight?  She’s often seen running the tables at L’Enfer, but even if her attempts at seducing Lady Luck are to no avail, the hearts of Paris’ most suitable bachelors still rest in her hands.  It seems that even when the house wins, Jacqueline Dubois never loses.
BIOGRAPHY
(tw: abuse, miscarriage, murder)
0-6 ans
Breathless laughs of joy escaped Monsieur et Madame Dubois when the piercing sound of neonate cries filled the room.  They had tried for years for a successful pregnancy, and they were finally here.  The smiles were wiped from their faces when the nurse announced that it was a beautiful baby girl.  What were they to do with a weak little girl?  A girl could not take over the family business, and even worse she wouldn’t further the Dubois name. Monsieur Dubois was a jeweler to the Parisian elite, only with their lavish lifestyle and appearances to be kept, another mouth to feed and the stagnation of the economy in the 1890s, what was once a busy business was now putting them in the red.  Though eventually business picked up a little more, his debts made during the store’s slower times had left the Dubois’ always behind the curve, struggling to keep afloat, let alone to catch up.
7-15 ans
Her family’s worsening financial situation didn’t make it any easier for Jacqui’s parents to show her the attention and love a growing child yearns for.  Rather, she was met with coldness and the highest of expectations; if they were going to have a girl, she would be groomed to be the most marketable of girls.  And for many years, she aimed to be the best to fulfill her parents’ wishes in hopes of finally gaining their affections.  She’d spend hours a day walking with books on top of her head, her back as straight as an arrow or practicing table manners and polite conversation.  As she aged, she was charming and intelligent with beauty to match, enamoring everyone she spoke to with her quick wit and grace — everyone except her parents.  Though most of her efforts went unnoticed and her achievements disregarded, any time she faltered was magnified by her parents; she slouched as they walked in le parc, her legs spread a little too far apart at Mass, she wastoo charming, precocious even and God forbid her reputation be tarnished by her coquettish behavior before they received a dowry.
16-17 ans
Eventually they did receive an offer of a dowry, and all of a sudden, the Dubois’ greatest disappointment was now their final saving grace.  All the hard work had paid off, as now her mother brushed her daughter’s long tresses with care.  “You’re going to make us very proud, my love.” Jacqueline recalled her mother cooing in her ear, and as the woman spoke of the details of the marriage arrangement, all Jacqui could think about was the first real semblance of endearment her mother offered her.
Gaston Choquette was everything her parents could’ve wanted for their girl; he was handsome, a powerful top-ranking member of Paris’ elite, and most importantly, trèsriche.  He was magnificent while courting Jacqui, showering both her and her family with gifts and treasures, offering her the affections she’d been missing out on her whole life.  He took her everywhere; shopping on the right bank, his business meetings in La Gavroche, nights out in Montparnasse.  It was him that introduced her to the exciting night life of Paris, making a spectacle when he arrived with her on his arm; she was the beauty to his beast… Only she hadn’t learned that quite yet.
18-20 ans
It was at their wedding that Jacqui had seen the first sign of her husband’s carnal nature.  It had only been mere moments after their ceremony had concluded, and she was greeted with her family and friends that wished to grant the couple their best wishes.  Monsieur Garnier, her father’s business partner of nearly a decade embraced Jacqui, and she gladly embraced him too. He was something of an uncle figure to her, one of the few that indulged Jacqueline with the affections a child should be granted.   He was always kind to her whenever she visited the store with her father, giving her all the answers to her many questions regarding jewelry whenever her own father brushed her off, praising her on her great wit during conversation whenever her parents let it go by unacknowledged.  Having him at her wedding pleased Jacqueline greatly, but she was sure to never express such pleasure for another man’s presence when Gaston’s fingers curled around her arm, pressing so deep that her bruise had lasted nearly two weeks after that.  “I never want to see you with a man like that again, you understand me?”  He growled in her ear as they left the church,  “We exchanged vows, you belong only to me — now and forever.”  There were blackened tear drops on the silhouette of her ivory gown.
With his temper in mind, Jacqueline tried to make the best of her situation and for a little while, it worked.  They’d still make a spectacle when they went out, dressed to the nines and having the time of “their” (mostly his) lives as Paris’ most beautiful couple; dinner and shopping in Montmartre and nights out in the liveliest clubs Montparnasse.  She was always on his arm, as he spoke about business with his partners, drank like a fish, and gambled away hundreds and thousands of Francs on end, and her rouge painted lips would be curled up in the smallest of smiles.  Though Jacqui had trained her whole life to be the best woman she could be, almost all of those skills were locked away in the back of her mind as Gaston’s wife.  She spoke very little to anyone and simply stood by him throughout the night until they went home, where she’d have to let him do whatever he desired to her.  What else could she do; she was but a weak little girl, non?
But Jacqueline was always an intelligent girl; easily picking up skill and information.  If you’re quiet as a mouse, people tend to forget you’re even there and say more than they should.  That was how she learned of her husband’s true occupation; he had always said he simply made business deals for his partners, but it didn’t make sense to her that a man only 6 years her senior had made such a name for himself.  Les Beaux Voyous weren’t something Jacqueline was unfamiliar with; she had heard of them through her parents’ discussion of their financial situation, and had even seen them at his shop more than a few times when she would visit.  It suddenly made sense and when she questioned him further about it, he shrugged it off, “C’est la vie.”  When his nonchalance enraged her, he grew enraged too; “Don’t you like the life we lead?  I don’t hear you complaining when you wear your furs or your diamonds that I bought you.”  And it was true, she didn’t complain; her whole life, affection was granted to her by the material items that she received.  Whether it be by gifts from her parents or suitors or eventually her husband, or the attention and respect she received when she went out with shiny pearls on her neck, Jacqueline cherished the products of her bourgeois tastes.  That was the last time she questioned her husband’s line of work.
He was a bookie, gambling away money and counting cards so he could turn a profit and as she lingered over his shoulder during their nights in The Blue Lotus or L’Enfer, Jacqui quickly learned that the house doesn’t always win.  She figured that if she wasn’t allowed to speak to anyone or truly enjoy herself, she’d at least pay attention while he played and soon enough, she picked up on the games.  She had gotten so good merely by watching that she’d even advise her husband on which cards to play next, masking her guidance as sweet nothings being whispered in his ear, or kisses placed on his neck; a happy couple.  But it’s easy to call plays when it’s not your money on the line, and one false call on Jacqueline’s part made her never want to look at cards ever again.  He had lost nearly 3,000 francs, and when he rose, her husband gave the table a light laugh.  “C’est la vie,” he said with a shrug, but his fingers again curled into Jacqueline’s arm as he steered them out of the smoke-filled basement of The Blue Lotus.  His words were like spades, cutting into her the entire drive home.  She was never to try and advise him again, especially where money was concerned; she was never to attempt to play cards, onlymen were smart enough to play cards.
21-24 ans
Though she could not say the same for her husband, Jacqueline’s life had slowed down significantly.  She refused to go out with him anymore, figuring that if she weren’t allowed to enjoy herself while in public, she’d surely enjoy herself at home then.  It was a nightly routine for her; give him a swift, emotionless kiss as he left and then within the hour, her girl friends would be over to play their own card games and dominoes while the husbands were out.  The women would share a few bottles of wine and bet a couple francs here and there, and just before midnight, Jacqui would clear them out and clean up the house before Gaston came home.  She was still great at the games, but she knew better than to let her husband find out that she was playing, let alone with money on the line.
Part of the routine was waiting for him to come home, as they’d been married for a few years now and still were without child.  Jacqueline wasn’t sure she had even wanted children, especially not with Gaston, but as the dutiful woman and wife she spent so much time learning to be, she complied.  They’d try night and night again, and when his luck on the table hadn’t transferred to the bedroom, again it was Jacqui’s fault and then his fists were like clubs, beating into her body for something that wasn’t even really her fault. Eventually she did fall pregnant, and at first everything was actually pleasant; similar to how things were right before the pair had married.  He was lovely and she had finally done something right, and despite all the issues they had had in the past, Jacqueline saw potential for their future.  He wanted nothing more than a son, and rather than go out and drink, he would chatter incessantly about the future of their unborn son.  “He will be the king of Paris,” he would say, “Just like his father.”
Thankfully, he wasn’t home when she had started bleeding; she wasn’t quite sure what he would’ve done but Jacqueline knew all too well that the man had no boundaries when he was enraged.  His prodigy was no longer a possibility, and she knew that she had to work with the hand she was dealt, otherwise the house would win.
So Jacqui had concocted a plan that ensured her victory, and when she came home from dinner with her mother one night, she was greeted with the police at her door.  “Madame, ” the captain had said, barely able to look her in the eye, “Je suis vraiment désolé.”  He informed the woman that her husband had been very drunk and fell into La Seine, and when his body had been retrieved, he had already drowned and was pronounced dead.  After making arrangements with the captain to visit the morgue the following morning, Jacqueline headed inside and called her girl friends and invited them over for a game of spades.  She won every hand that night.
25 ans - À present
Following her husband’s “mysterious” death, Jacqueline collected her belongings and as much money as she could, and sold their house.  It was with that money that she bought her own beautiful apartment on the right bank and truly began her life.  She still had expensive tastes, and satisfied her own appetite while gambling the rest away in hopes of coming out with even more.  Jacqui was good, but she already knew that.  She played with the big boys, pulling out francs by the pound and counting cards all the way down to the 3 of hearts, but sometimes they were admittedly better.  Still, there had to be respect given to a woman who could hold her own in a game of cards and Jacqui came to be known as La Spadille.  She was invited to all the tournaments, knew all the passwords to the hidden basements of clubs and if ever she were desperate for a few extra guaranteed francs, she even knew where to find cheap games with the drunk working class men.
A lot of the times she was up, but there were quite a few times where she was down and out.  If ever she were running too low on money, she unlocked that little box of skills and traits that she had placed in the furthest depths of her mind and became the most marketable woman she could be.  An unmarried woman can only do as much as is appropriate, but a widow?  She can do as she pleases.  Jacqueline came from money and was married into money, so it was only right that she associate herself with the richest of the rich, even if she couldn’t afford to.  She can be seen on the arms of wealthy men, radiating her own excellence as if she doesn’t need them, or she can be seen alone, but using her own charm to cause them to flock to her.  In either case, her meals and drinks are often paid for without request, and at the end of the night, Jacqueline is left with more money to test her luck with at the tables in the morning.
POTENTIAL PLOTS/CONNECTIONS
Since Jacqueline is a born and bred “wealthy” Parisian, I’d love to see some connections from her past and perhaps even some that dig into her situation with her husband and how he “mysteriously” died.
Along the same lines, I’d also love for someone from her past to expose the fact that she’s actually broke asf right now and perhaps publicly humiliates her for it?
I’d also love to delve deeper into her lowkey escort business, because really Jacqui’s just trying to secure her bag however she can so perhaps she’s conning someone that’s married and their wife finds out, or OOH a woman who’s like her lowkey sugar-momma but then the husband finds out?  That’s hella scandalous.
I’m sure once she gets some more money, she’d probably try and be smart with it rather than gambling it all away, so I’d love for her to get involved in some risky business and further crime.
There’s room for a lot so come and love her plz.

If I Could Turn Back Time...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (2nd-6th July 2018)
The year is 2002 and in Hollyoaks village Ellie Hunter shocks her family by waltzing back in after a two year radio silence, Mandy Richardson and Adam Morgan are involved in a horrific car crash and Mr C is making a tit of himself at the Jubilee celebrations. Meanwhile, in another part of the country, it’s James Nightingale’s 16th birthday and his Father, Mac, gifts him a night with a prostitute, hoping that the experience will ‘turn him straight’. The fling results in a pregnancy and Marnie pays the prostitute, Donna-Marie, to have an abortion. Or so she thinks...
Tumblr media
This week, Hollyoaks rewound the clock and gave viewers a glimpse into the past life of popular character, James. The first flashback took us to 2002 and James’ 16th birthday. After finding out that his son was gay, Mac organised for James to sleep with a prostitute, hoping that the experience would make him realise he was actually straight.  A pregnancy resulted, and Marnie soon ‘sorted’ the problem by paying for a termination. Which brings us nicely to the next flashback and with ‘Call Me Maybe’ playing on the radio and the London Olympics being on newspaper covers, it could only be 2012. Here, we met a now grown-up James preparing to start work at a law firm. However, the occasion wasn’t all happy as Mac soon demanded that James help him get £100,000, supposedly to save his company from going under. Desperate for his Father’s approval, James made the decision to embezzle money from his new work place and he soon met the perfect person to frame for the crime when he met kindly accountant, Kashif Maalik. However, unbeknownst to James, his Father’s business wasn’t in trouble and they actually needed the money to pay Donna-Marie, who hadn’t had a termination after all...
Tumblr media
Back in the present day, James’ son, Romeo, approached his house, but couldn’t bring himself to knock on the door and walked away. Inside, James was desperately trying to work out who was framing him for Kyle’s murder. Suddenly, James had a realisation, and after all this time, remembered the surname of the man he’d framed; Maalik. Putting two and two together, James came up with four, and realised that Sami was Kashif’s son, and must surely be behind his recent troubles. The following day, James headed to Sami’s office and after finding the evidence he needed, confronted his rival. Turning the tables on Sami, James ordered him to get the murder charge dropped, or he’d tell the police that the whole thing was a set-up. Later on that day, Marnie invited the family round for a meal but Sami’s goading of James soon got too much for him to bear, and he beat him up, accidentally knocking Ellie over in the process...
Tumblr media
It appeared that neither Sami or Ellie had been seriously hurt, but the following day, Ellie collapsed at The Dog after feeling lightheaded and was rushed to hospital. Sami felt guilty about the situation and made the rather hasty decision to leave the village, however, he soon changed his mind when he discovered that Ellie was pregnant. James was devastated when Ellie shared her news with him and begged her not to have Sami’s baby. In that moment, Ellie saw red and got straight on the phone to Roxy, telling her to add Sami’s assault to James’ murder charge...
Tumblr media
That wasn’t the only Nightingale trauma this week as Marnie was finally told what was wrong with Alfie; schizoaffective disorder. Realising that her son would be on medication for life, Marnie decided to seek a second opinion and called in Dr Spellman. Unfortunately for Marnie, she didn’t get the news she was hoping for when Alfie’s diagnosis was confirmed and Marnie was shocked to be told that she could actually impair his recovery by refusing to acknowledge his illness...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Adam’s ashes were ready to collect and Grace and Maxine made the decision to scatter them together. However, after yet another row, Glenn ended up throwing the ashes all over Grace, leaving Maxine furious. Glenn tried to get back in Maxine’s good books by blaming Grace for the incident and offering to scatter the remainder of the ashes with her. One thing lead to another, as it so often does after scattering some ashes, and Glenn and Maxine ended up sleeping together. Unusually for Hollyoaks, Grace found out relatively quickly and finally walked out on Glenn! Great scenes, until you remember she’s walking out of her own flat. A flat that Glenn has no claim to...
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Farrah was delighted to be offered a new job as a forensic psychologist, surely a result of the fantastic work she did with RyRy earlier in the year. There was, however, a downside, and the new job would require Farrah to work much longer hours. Not so great when Kim was still refusing to leave the house. Not wanting to share the news with Kim, Farrah confided in Misbah that she didn’t want to jeopardise Kim’s recovery by leaving her before she was ready. Worried that her daughter was going to turn down the offer, Misbah decided to tell Kim about the job. Wanting to show Farrah how proud she was of her, Kim decided to leave the house alone to go and get Farrah a present but was left upset when Farrah snapped at her, unaware that she’d just shared a snog with Grace. The following day, Kim was still struggling but forced herself to leave the house again. This time, she headed back to the basement, to seek comfort from Rick Astley.
Tumblr media
In other news this week, desperate for a break from Imran, Misbah begged Buster to take him to the training camp in Barcelona, leaving Yasmine feeling like her Brother was being reward for his violent behaviour. Cleo was panicking about her upcoming wedding to Joel and Myra attempted to take some of the load off by buying her a wedding dress. Cleo was delighted by the thought, but was left devastated to discover that the dress was too small. Finally, Tegan was discharged from hospital and Diane, Leela and Ste realised they’d have to tell her about Dee Dee’s illness...

5 Things We Learnt This Week:
1. Hollyoaks village has it’s own education system, where children start school younger than in other parts of the country. Either that or Rose Lomax and the Hutchinson kids are child geniuses who have been moved up a year.
2. Family loyalty means nothing to Ellie. James supported her when Nick raped her and helped cover up what she did to Mac and she repays him by turning her back on him when he’s in trouble. Nice sister, there.
3. Kim’s taken up papier mache and has made a bowl, but she doesn’t know if it’s safe to eat out of. There’s Hollyoaks next big story. Several characters come down with a mystery illness after eating from Kim’s bowl. That’s got ‘Best Storyline’ at next year’s British Soap Awards written all over it.
4. The folley found a new use this week as Glenn and Maxine scattered Adam’s ashes there. Well, I suppose it’s been used for just about everything else!
5. Glenn is actually ill! There is a God!
Characters Featured:
Alfie, Anthony, Buster, Cleo, Courtney, Curtis, Dee Dee, Diane, Donna-Marie, DS Roxy Cassidy, Ellie, Farrah, Glenn, Grace, Holly, Imran, James, Joel, Kim, Leela, Marnie, Maxine, Misbah, Myra, Oliver, Romeo, Rose, Sami, Ste, Tegan, Tony and Yasmine.

I have been playing the violin since I was 4 and while I’m not a master at it I can carry a tune. I am a pretty great singer (so I think at least) and sound exactly like Mandy Moore. I was also the drum major for my marching band (the person who conducts). I can also play the alto saxophone and to a much lesser extent: all woodwinds. I love music so much!!! I can also act and improv really well! I’ve been in many school plays but never as a main character so I don’t know for sure, but I’ve been the leader of the chorus many, many times. I’m a great manager!!! I won an award for the best crew head for costumes (which is my dream job) which is costume management and backstage quick changes! And if I don’t sound egotistical enough, I’m very good at it. And finally (I promise) I’m really amazing with numbers. I can memorize dates and sequences really well and recite them almost rhythmically (like music and I also think this is why I’m good at music). I know everyone’s birthday, and anniversaries, and I can name 21 digits of pi at the drop of a hat. Look, all I’ve ever wanted to be was famous ok? lol

Thoughts of RPDR AS3 Ep. 4
Snatch game spoilers are here! H-E-R-E bitch!
Kennedy’s evil laugh when reading the mirror message. That just made me laugh.
Trixie was right. Kennedy was right to feel bad about Milk coming for her. But she can’t lie: she sent Milk overwhelmingly because of personal reasons. Which I’m not against. It’s All Stars: play the game.
Also Trixie showing off her ass. All her fans probably nutted...ew Michelle...
Bebe walks into the werkroom unfazed while Shangela and Bendela are acting foolz. Lovely.
Bless Thorgy: still creating drama even though she’s not even in the room. Trixie’s face crack--that’s the versatility and vulnerability we’re looking for.
Shangela & Kennedy vs. Trixie is the drama we’ve been waiting for. **evil grin**
“Oh my god. Get out of my station.” Meme of the episode.
Aja in the cornacia wig (corn swamp wig). Iconic. This wig is becoming object meme of the season.
Marc Jacobs is the guest judge: Milk is SHOOK. ;)
Ru having a crack at Shangela’s Miss Cleo. Lol. I can’t wait to see how this turns out. Back-up jennifer lewis? q.q
Kennedy’s struggle is real clip. CLIP IT. I WANT A GIF NAO!
CHI CHI NO! STAHP... q.q ... FUCK...
Bendela going full force. SLAY GURL.
YASS BEBE! COME THROUGH!! ... or maybe not... lol
KRISTEN ON SNATCH GAME!!!! <3 OMG I LOVE HER.
TRIXIE WOW! EPIC FAIL! XD
Aja. yes. Werk.
Lol Trixie is going home. I can sense it. Let’s see if Chi Chi is saved.
BenDeLa what the fuq. How are you so good at the game? Shangela however is clocking you.
Predictions: BenDeLa, Aja, Shangela in the top. Trixie, Kennedy, Chi Chi, in the bottom.
Why the fuck is Ru’s wig so far back on her head? -.-
Aja - basic gorg. Safe Toot.
Shangela - gorgeous flower pieces. Preggers Shangie? Milk is shook. Toot.
Bebe - literally if Rupaul did this challenge, she would wear that. Toot. Bebe literally does no wrong on the runway. If only she could slay the challenge.
Kennedy - decent gown. I’m conflicted because the Black is a nice contrast from the sunflowers, but I also wanted something more vibrant. Toot. It’s classic drag so I can’t be mad, but it needs a little something special.
Chi Chi - gorgeous. Like the tits out. It’s like the sluttly aunt at the wedding. I dunno she’s really pretty. Like the white lilies. But needs a little more. Toot.
Trixie - BEAUTIFUL. She’s giving me Pearl realness lol. WAKE UP TRIXIE. Toot.
Bendela - Another gown but something is more interesting. Pink is just a good color for her. I love the way it contrasts with the green. Toot. She is just murdering this competition.
Shangela and Bendela are top  two. I got it right ;). FOURTH WEEK IN THE TOP. BENDELA GOD DAMN. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU (TEAMBEBE first tho) and you are delivering. Screw the doubters. LIKE I KNEW YOU WERE GONNA GO ALL THE WAY BUT DAMN SHE IS ON FIRE...i wonder when her fire will pewter out... :(
Holy shit. If Shangela wins...Trixie is going home. OMG. THIS IS THE DRAMA WE NEED. SO THAT MEANS...TRIXIE IS THE ONE TO RISE FROM THE RUVENGE CHALLENGE. HOLY SHIT.
Kenchangela is the new Rolaskatox.
Chi is the Roxxxy. unfortunate. Ben’s sending her home because it’s the easy excuse. But Shangela for sure ain’t sending her home.
WHAT THE FUCK. Bendela staaaaaaaaaaaaap. I love you. You’re playing the sweetheart. But gurl. I sure as hell know the fuck is going on. It is not a hard decision... then again I’m not in your shoes so ignore me lol.
Ben’s lipsync outfit is so cute.
SHANGELA YOU’RE SENDING TRIXIE HOME?! go gurl. do it.
Shangela throwing altoids on Bendela is something I never knew I needed.
Shangela shedding her dress to reveal that gurl I knew she was. slay.
HOLY SHIT. DOUBLE WIN? FUCK! INSANE. THIS IS THE DRAMA NEEDED.
HOLY SHIT. CHI CHI WAS DOUBLE SENT HOME. HOLY SHIT. Shangela just saved herself from messy fans.
Chad & Alaska’s scenes are just getting better and better.
The next episode is more drama? I CAN”T WAIT.
Everyone was like...this season isn’t full of stars. And I was like, but bitch it’s a cast full of drama. AND LET ME TELL YOU. I LIVE FOR DRAMA. GIVE ME THE DRAMA. <3 the gurls. They’re topping AS2. There I said it.
Now I’ll have to go search for Drag Race Thailand, because my asian ass wants to indulge in the sexy pit crew and live for asian queens <3.

Neil Season 3 part 5
Trigger warning: +16. This chapter includes mention of drug use and sexual harassment. The topics may be sensitive to some people!
Hey! For those of you who don’t know I am writing a Speakeasy Tonight fanfic about how I imagine Neil Season 3 would look like! The visual novel and original story is on the Lovestruck app! This is chapter 5, here’s a link with all the other chapters: https://mydearsaddiary.tumblr.com/NeilSeason3Fanfic
Little curiosity notes: Hello, everyone! Thanks for reading my fanfic! This chapter is a bit longer so it’ll be divided in two parts! It covers Problems with Vera, the gang has a new enemy, Hazel coming over and the wedding planning is moving forward! Enjoy! Don’t forget that if you have anything to add, you can always contact me! I always respond to messages!
Candy, My Dear Diary (6/2/20)
Chapter 5- All’s fair in love and war (PART 1)
1926
When I told Uncle Charlie I’d take over the Ice Box for him, I had the common sense to know it’d be dangerous, but I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. How could I know?
Regardless, I did my job. I have faced dangers and sometimes I wasn’t sure if I could do it. But if there’s one thing Poppa told me is that you don’t show that. A leader keeps doing whatever he has to do and he never shows insecurity, he never lets doubt grow in those who depend on him. So even though I wasn’t sure if we were going to beat Vera once more, I’ll be darned if I let her win.
That’s what I was thinking about that morning. Neil and me were wrapped up in last night’s sheets, but at some point I had to get moving. Neil now ate more than me and woke up later than me, so he was still sleeping. I didn’t complain, how many sleepless nights and meals he skipped in the years since the war? He had some catching up to do.
I laid on his bare chest, noticing the details on his face. His brows furrowed in his sleep, his slight frown that made him a cynic even when he was unconscious. Part of me wondered what it was he dreamt about.
I got up, leaving him peacefully and putting on my robe. I arranged his clothes that were thrown on the floor last night on the bed and went down to whip up us some breakfast.
Before I did so I went to get the mail, and surprisingly found a letter from Lucille. I assumed Neil gave her my address in case she wanted to reach him somewhere else, but it startled me that it was addressed to a “Miss Granger”.
I sat on the dinner table opening the letter
Dear MC Granger,
I couldn’t help but feel guilty about how we ended things with you. It was an unfortunate turn of events, and I wanted to be sure to let you know my mother heard her share about it from me. I also wanted to notify you and my brother Neil about the birth of my daughter, Cornelia. I wish to visit you both in Chicago and I’d love for Neil to meet his niece. I’d be delighted if you’d allow me to introduce you as her aunt as well. My mother shall come with me if you accept, she’s ready to make amends. Please reply to my letter as soon as you can and let us know when it is a good time to visit you. I am thrilled to have you as a new addition to our family
Hope to see you soon,
Lucille Branford of Boston”
It was sweet of her to have written me after I stormed out of Boston without even saying goodbye. Lucille was so understanding, too much for her own good. I wrote her back immediately, letting her know I was sorry for disappearing and that I’d love to have her in Chicago next week. Hazel would be here these days, so it was better to separate things for now.
I finished breakfast and was about to wake Neil up when he came down the stairs. I smiled at him for a second. His disheveled hair that was usually in pristine shape and his slightly swollen eyes from having just woken up made me warm inside. We were truly domestic now, all that stood in the way were the days until I walked down the aisle
-Morning, my dear fiancé- I put emphasis on that last part
He chuckled looking at me- You’re in a good mood
-Why wouldn’t I be? I’ve got the most handsome man in the world right in front of me
He gave me a sarcastic smile in response , the one you gave to your mother as a kid when she forced you to be photographed, and it made me laugh- Go throw some water on your face, will ya? You’re giving me the heebie-jeebies- I said running my fingers through his hair to fix it up, after a few seconds I got his attention again- Hey, your sister wrote me
-Lucille?-He looked at me now sitting at the table after washing his face- What did she say?
-She wants to come to Chicago, Cornelia is born. I told her she could stay here for a couple of days next week. She’ll bring your mother and I’m sure her husband will come if Cornelia is
He raised an eyebrow-Are you sure you can handle all that right now? Your schedule is full
-Well, she asked and it’s only for a couple of days, next week Uncle Charlie will still be in Columbus so we’ll have extra rooms. Besides… I was hoping you’d stay here those days to help me out too- I looked at him pleadingly- After all, we need to start planning the wedding. I have to go to a boring temperance meeting this morning and I’m pretty sure Vera is gonna make an appearance at that one, so I’ll be plenty stressed after. Buuut… After that we have appointments at different venues for our wedding and I hired a planner, she’ll talk about some of the decorations and the reception
He sighed, obviously overwhelmed at the amount of stuff I had just said- We should’ve just eloped.
-C’mon, we have to make this a wedding to remember! It’s our only one!-I pouted holding his hands
He looked at me for a few seconds, pondering his options- Fine, fine! I can’t fight against those cow eyes. But there’s something else
-What is it?- I said in bewteen my eating and drinking coffee
-You know my family will make sure they’re all here for the wedding, right?
-Well, I imagined so
-This makes our wedding a high society wedding, and they have their own customs. I’m sure my mother is coming to Chicago because if she couldn’t stop it, she wants to have a say in it
-That’ll make my parents happy as a clam. I’ve never been to any high society weddings, only seen them on the newspapers. They always make such a big deal about them
-Yes, exactly-He continued- I’m bringing up my offer to elope again, because a high society wedding means we’ll be on the newspaper. Both in Chicago because it’s where we’ll marry, and in Boston because it’s where my family is from. It’ll say something like “Boston bachelor snatched: Heir of the Dresners marries sweetheart in Chicago” or something as corny as that
-Nice try, I’m still gonna go ahead with my plans
-It’s your funeral
-No, buster, it’s our wedding!-I went around the table, sitting on his lap- And I’m determined to make it the best wedding Chicago has ever seen
He looked up at me smiling- Then I can’t argue. Once you decide something, trying to get you to change your mind is like trying to take food out of a bulldog’s mouth.
-You’re sleeping with this bulldog
-Don’t say that phrase, ever again- He looked at me incredulously and I couldn’t help but laugh as I leaned in to plant a passionate kiss on his lips
-I love you-I whispered into him
-Yeah, I know- He looked at me with a smirk and I poked at his ribs- Ow! I was just- Ow, stop that! Alright, I love you too, MC- He said and I stopped satisfied
-Alright-I kissed him one more time before getting up- I need to get ready and leave for the temperance meeting. Should I come over to your apartment after? It’d be easier if you just picked me up and we went to the venues together from there, you know?
He agreed he’d pick me up and I made my way to the kitchen, putting the dishes in the sink.
Then I don’t know what came over me, but I started thinking of everything that I had to do. Temperance meeting speeches, Ice Box, deal with Vera Peters, Hazel, Uncle Charlie, Wedding planning… It’s like everything became a spiral of disconcerted thoughts inside my head that made me anxious. I felt this sudden dizziness take over my head. Suddenly the smell of the kitchen was bothering me and I felt like I had to sit down. But before I could do anything it was like my body gave up on me and regurgitated everything I had just eaten into that sink and I coughed everything out.
I stayed there for a few seconds trying to recompose myself. First thought in my head was shallow: “I can’t believe I just puked, that’s gross!”. Then I turned the water on washing it away and grabbing a paper towel wiping my lips
-MC?- Neil stood leaned on the doorway, a worried look on his face
-Ugh… You didn’t just watch that, did you?
-No… But I heard it- This time he walked towards me as a filled a cup with water
-Don’t drink all that. Just a sip. You shouldn’t drink or eat much for the next few hours- He started taking care of the dishes himself- Sit down
I did as he told me- I must’ve drank too much yesterday- my eyes itched
-I don’t think that’s it-He washed our plates- You have a habit of working until you can’t handle it anymore. You did it a few months ago when you passed out due to exhaustion- He turned to me once he was done- And you’ve been working and working nonstop and Cleo mentioned you were tired last night. Throwing up is also a sign of overworking… Means your body is overwhelmed, MC- He walked towards me, kneeling down and touching my knees gently- Which means: Take care of yourself. That advice is not only for Charlie, either. If you don’t want me holding you captive again- He joked around- Take it easy.
I sighed and then nodded- Alright, doctor. I’ll take it easy
After I promised Neil I’d watch myself, I dressed up and took a cab to the most stressful event of all: Temperance meetings with Vera. She wasn’t showing up to them in a while but I knew that getting married to Mayor Adler would bring her enough courage to show her face again. And right I was. I sat down in one of the couches as she rose to speak to everyone
Vera still had that charm about her. The same grace in her movements, the same poise in her manners. The finesse present in her clothes and her cakes that made people roll their eyes with pleasure, everything was there to gain the hearts of the temperance people back. She was the same elegance as before. However, her piercing eyes told a different story, one everyone was unaware of but me. Vera Peters lived to rule and to ruin, she had the mind of a dictator. In other circumstances I would’ve admired a strong woman, but strong doesn’t always mean good. In Vera’s case it meant havoc.
-Dear Temperance comrades- She started and I already wanted to throw up again- As you know I have discovered that my former husband was involved in criminal activities and directly entangled with the infamous mob boss O’Sullivan. As reported, they are both in jail now where they should be- In her words I could see the lack of loyalty, the deception, the cruelty. Even so, I used to be as blind to it as everybody else in this room- …And I of course, have divorced Peters. I had no idea of his vices and the crimes he committed- Lies, just lies! I just want to call her out- And have now found a partner that shares my drive in the temperance movement, former Prohibition officer and mayor of Chicago: Richard Adler. I will forever support our cause and we will raise again, together- She looked at me this time, glaring with a wicked smile- Every time someone tries to put us down.
As expected, by the end of the temperance meeting everyone was greeting Vera Peters, now Vera Adler and talking about how sorry they were she had to go through all that and how strong she was. I stayed away from the action or I’d puke again on her face. However, Vera seemed to be one of those people who wanted to have everyone under her spell, and she knew I wasn’t in on it. So she came on walking right towards me with her band of loyal followers
-Miss Granger, I hear congratulations are in order-She spoke in that voice that made me want to eat up lead- You’re engaged to that handsome doctor of yours. It’s such a noble profession- She said teasing me, since she researched Neil’s past and knew of his morphine addiction
-Thanks, Vera- I said in that fake friendly tone- I must congratulate you as well on your marriage to Mayor Adler- I hated the fact I had to go back to being civil with her
She smiled even more, since she knew I wanted her to be everything but the Mayor’s wife. Ditch one Mayor and go to the next one… She’s like a Black Mayor Widow- Oh thanks, dear! Won’t you eat one of my cakes?
-I can’t. I’m sick, shouldn’t eat much. Doctors’ orders-I smiled so no one would notice how much I wanted to slug her in the face if I could
-That’s a shame, dear. I hope I can convince you to tea after this?- She played her move.
That was the last thing I wanted. She was smart, if I refused again with no excuse it’d make me look bad and less respectable. Lucky for me I had a perfect excuse- I’d really love to some other time, Vera. But you got me at a bad time. After this, me and my fiancé have appointments with our wedding planner. See, we have so much to do!- I tried to put on my best upper-crust action- Then we have family from other states coming to visit. It’s a busy time for me
-You should hurry up the wedding if you’re already feeling sick… No respectable lady should be with child out of wedlock- She smiled and her friends all gasped with the gossip
That witch! She knew that wasn’t the case, she just used my indisposition to make me look bad. I almost slapped her face right then and right there, but she looked back at me as if she said “I dare you”, so I breathed profoundly and smile at her again- You should be more careful with misleading gossip, Mrs. Adler. I’m not expecting
-It must be the extra weight then, I’m sorry dear!-She laughed like we were old pals.
As if he had read my thoughts, Neil pulled up to the house- Oh look, my ride is here. Until next time, Vera Adler.
-Oh yes, we’ll see each other very soon-She said before I left
When I got into the car I just threw myself on the seat sighing
-That bad, huh?-Neil asked driving
-I might puke again, all over your car- I said dramatically
-It’ll be a cold day in hell when I let that happen! Roll down your window!
I did as he asked. I wasn’t really going to be sick, but the air felt good on my face-Well, to the church then-I pointed forward
Once we were there I looked around. It was a huge church, taller than everything in Columbus. I bet it could fit everyone we knew there and then some. I walked around in red carpet, tried to imagine myself walking down it and see Neil there, waiting for me at the end
-Don’t like it?-He asked seeing my reaction
-Do you?-I looked at him, my arm tucked in his
-To be honest I’m not good at deciding this stuff. I was just gonna go with whatever you thought was good- He shrugged- As long as it’s you walking up to me, it doesn’t really matter where it happens
I smiled. He could be sweet when he wanted
-But- Neil continued- I know women do imagine this moment more than us and I’m sure you have an idea of what you want. So if it doesn’t feel right, then it’s not the place
-Yes, I guess so. Thanks, Neil
With that I knew that wasn’t it. It’d probably satisfy both of Neil’s family and mine. However, that day wasn’t about them, it was about me and Neil. I just had to go with my instincts.
Along the way there was a chapel that I liked the most. I thought about it for a while and I could imagine everything in it. I could see the car parking in front of it. The stairs that led up to its doors. It was built out of wood, but it was entirely white. It had beautiful pink and salmon roses on the outside. The inside was a caramel color, the seats were brown, in a traditional church fashion. The sides of the seats were decorated with the same roses as the outside. The big windows left everything naturally lit and the red carpet led to the altar, where I could see Neil standing, waiting to take my hand. For convenience, it was big and charming enough so our families wouldn’t be opposed, but not so extravagant that I felt scared by it.
-What do you think?-I asked him
-It seems to be away from all the action of the city. Closer to the residential area, not likely we’ll be hearing any disturbances from the outside. If you like it, then I’m all for it
-Well, that’s ducky, because I think it’s the bee’s knees!
I did want to wait until the cold was mostly over so we settled for a date in early May. About five and a half months from now. Seemed enough time to do everything without worrying everyone about taking too long. Since we had a venue and a date, the rest of the planning would rest on the reception, invitations and dresses, tuxedos and fitting. Seeing it coming along was really exciting
We were driving to La Salle station to pick my little sister Hazel up and I decided to strike up a conversation
-Did you go through this before, you know, the wedding planning… With Lillie?-I looked at him
He seemed pensive for a moment- No, not really. Our families were traditional, they always told me how much of a great girl she was and I went along with it. I met her and she seemed nice enough. Lucille loved her, it’s her best friend, and you see she made Lillie the godmother. Then there’s Alton who never said much about it, but didn’t seem opposed to the idea. I trusted their judgment better than anyone else. When we enlisted in the war I was convinced I wanted to marry her so I proposed. This way when I came back she’d be waiting for me. So I was really in France while they planned everything. They wanted me to marry her as soon as I came back but you knew how in shambles I was. So I convinced them to wait until I was done with Med school… And then I left. So, no… I wasn’t really involved in it
It seemed dark and gloomy. Most things with Neil seemed that way- Do you like being involved in it?
He chuckled- I can’t say party planning is my calling. But… I can’t say I hate it either- He smiled at me in a comforting way
Once we were at the station, my sister waited with a small bag for us, she recognized Neil in the driver’s seat and got in the back of the car- There’s so many people over here- That was the first thing she said
-Well, hello to you too-I answered
-Hey MC, hey doc- Hazel said
-You didn’t bring any of the heroin with you, did you?-Neil asked
-No, it’s just like you said-She replied
-Good, it’ll be harder that way, but you’ll sweat yourself off it- Neil was not one to calm anybody’s nerves or sugarcoat anything- I was thinking of taking her to the infirmary but, I think she’ll be better around someone familiar.
-Of course she can stay at Uncle Charlie’s- I turned around to face her- By the way, Hazel, how is Uncle Charlie?
-Old- She said- And he and Poppa stay the whole night talking and playing poker and when they wake up in the morning, they go into the woods to hunt or fish or whatever. Can’t pull ‘em apart. Even Momma’s been around him. I mean, they all grew up together
It was nice to know he was doing fine- That’s good. I told him he needed a vacation from the store and let me watch over it
-Yea… Hey doc, how does this work? This whole getting off the dynamite thing?
-Simple. In about 24 to 48 hours you’re going to want to die. You’ll sweat, feel pain, won’t be able to control your movements, you’ll probably cry, throw up, it’ll feel like all your bones are being shattered at the same time… Then after that it gets better.
-Sounds perfect- She said sarcastically
-After the initial stress, we’ll send you back to Columbus. I’ve got a contact in Cincinnati who agreed to come up to Columbus, owed me a favor. From there he’ll take it over for us. Just play it out like you’re going out with the man.
-Yea, then my parents will send her to a convent for going out with two fellas at the same time- I added
-Teddy Denby? I dumped him. You were right, he’s a bust
I laughed, not surprised- I was there once too, sister.
And for the next few days the only eventuality that took place was what Neil called detox. The good side was that Neil stayed over at Uncle Charlie’s with the both of us. The bad side was that Hazel did feel like she was going to die like Neil said, and she looked like it too. I never heard her cry so much in my life.
I didn’t mention anything to Neil though, I trusted him enough to know that he knew what he was doing. Not just because he was a doctor, but because he went through something similar.
It had been five days since she had been there with us. I hadn’t gone to the Ice Box much and neither had Neil, but I had to wait until Hazel was home to update myself on hurricane Vera. On that fifth day though, Hazel had stopped crying. It seemed like most of the physical symptoms faded or were almost completely fading away. Neil said something about having to continue the process, but that the worst was over, however the cravings or long-lasting effects would be there, so that’s what the contact, I’m assuming another doctor, from Cincinnati was for.
I was sitting on the bed with her that day when she said- I think I might be carrying a torch for him, MC- She faced me- Will you cancel your wedding?
I laughed. She probably had a little crush but I knew she was pulling my leg- Hands off! I worked hard for it!- I hesitated about saying the next part, but said it anyway- By the way, it’s not unusual for a patient to develop a crush on her doctor. Psychiatrists call it transference!- I imitated Neil’s tone of voice
-I think you’re spending too much time with him
-You noticed we’re getting married, right?-I laughed with her and updated Hazel on the upcoming plans of the marriage from then on.
I gave her a letter to give to Momma for everyone and then a separate one to Uncle Charlie. Before she went home I made her swear she would follow up with the plan and stay clean, watch out for herself and cooperate. Her treatment was long from over but it seemed Neil had started it well.
Once we dropped her off at La Salle station I turned to him- Did you flirt with her?- I asked as a joke
-I am the flirting type- He teased back- Besides, I couldn’t resist her vomiting, diarrhea and the excessive sweating. My type of girl
I laughed, feeling wrong about it a few seconds after- You are one inappropriate son of a gun
-You laughed anyway-He got into the car and I followed him
-Thanks, Neil… For doing that
-I didn’t do much to be honest- He started to drive- Just got her through the initial stages of it. She’s still going to feel everything, just not in the same intensity
-Well, I imagine the beginning is the worst, just take the gratitude, will ya?
He smiled, softly- You’re welcome
After that I decided it was time to go back to the Ice Box. I needed updates on how everything was going, so I scheduled a meeting. Everyone had a few days to work on everything, so it seemed like the right time
-Alright-I said looking at Gerald- How’s everything going at The Broiler?
-We’re being friendly with each other. I can’t rush it but… I gave her the impression I was amazed at her skills and thought she had a good business head and gave tips, so she thinks I’m warming up to the idea- He sighed- And we shared a few drinks, got a date tomorrow- He blushed, obviously hating his role in all this
-Ooo… Excited, Gerry?- Vince teased and O’Fallon turned even more red, I just didn’t know if it was out of embarrassment or anger
-Can it, Vince!-I glared at him, then turned my attention to Gerald again- You’ll just have to keep at it. The sooner she trusts you the sooner we’ll be rid of her
-I know, I just hope it works-He said frustrated with Vince’s comment
-It will. Anyone have anything to add?
Vince started- Oh, those documents you wanted me to find at O’Sullivans warehouse… They’re not there. Nothing there incriminates the Broiler from what I can see
Cliff followed- How do we know if she’s just saying all that and in reality she’s got nothing?
-No- Gerald said- She has documents. Waived them right in front of me, they exist.
-Alright-I said next- Vera invited me for tea and I refused, maybe if I accept next time she’ll take me to her house. I could try snoop around a bit
-Don’t think she’ll let you out of her sight- Cliff said
-Well, I’m going to try anyway. If it doesn’t work we’ll just have to try something else
And so the plan unfolded. Vera Peters did invite me for tea the next time I was at the temperance meeting again. She wanted something for being so insistent, and so did I
When I went into her house though, it wasn’t what I was expecting. A white mansion stood before my eyes, and the biggest living room I had ever seen in shades of green expanded its way in an unquantifiable immensity. Mayor Adler sure had a deep pocket. Her servants set the table and Vera waited, a cup in her hand and her legs crossed. She didn’t get up or greet me, she just kept looking and motioned the cup towards the other seat. I made my way sitting across her. A silence took over for a second as she flipped a page on her magazine. I didn’t take her for a magazine kind of woman, but it seemed like it was on purpose.
After she ignored my presence for a few minutes, I started talking- You invite me for tea, have the table set. Why exactly am I here for, Vera?
-My name is Mrs. Adler, wife to the mayor- She gave herself the title- And you shall refer to me as such
I almost laughed, but I had to hold it in. It seemed like she had called me here to institutionalize fear and respect. I thought at first it was because she wanted me to treat her like the other ladies at the temperance meetings did. But then I realize she didn’t see me that way. It gave me a bit of satisfaction to realize she wanted my respect as a business woman, as a gang leader. She had Gerald’s and now she sat me down, trying to force her way into my head
Vera was danger, alright. I knew I had to play just the same game as her as I did before. The problem is: Was I smarter than her? I urged myself to think, what’s the best thing to do here?
I breathed in and out recomposing myself-Alright, Mrs. Adler. What is it you want?
-I want what I first offered you a month ago, MC-She sipped her tea- I want to have you under my wing, do as I say
-What makes you think I’ll do what you say?
-I don’t know if you’ve heard but I got control of The Broiler recently
-I did hear some rumors you’ve been hanging around there-I crossed my legs sipping my tea- But what makes you think we’re as stupid as everyone in O’Sullivan’s gang?
-On the contrary, you’re smarter. I appreciate a woman with a head for business. However, my husband has documents in his office I handed to him incriminating Charles Granger as a mob boss and your sweet fiancé’s illegal medicine practices, with the addition that he’s still using morphine. Of course I added that myself- If I could I would jump on her right now- The only reason why an arrest warrant hasn’t been issued yet is because I told him not to, but the moment you stop cooperating with me they’ll be wearing stripes.
I glared at her in fury, she had the upper hand for sure, but in me I knew we already had a plan against her. I was confident enough, but I needed Charlie and Neil to be safe. So I remembered all my acting classes from Elliot and Sofia’s classes on deception and I looked at her- Alright,Ve- I stopped for a second- Mrs. Adler- I saw her smile of satisfaction. It’d be good for us if she thought we had nothing on her
-I’ll call you for tea next week again. I have grand ideas for the Ice Box- She smiled- Now I’m done with you for the day. You can find your wait out, right?
I left in a hurry, made a bit of scene too, might convince her I lost. I slipped into the Studebaker and drove away. However, I stopped in the corner. I know I needed to get her out of the house to snoop around. Which is why Officer Gallagher would call her for a meeting with the coppers, since Sofia found out Mayor Adler would be there. After, I knew her plans were dinner with a certain Irish fella.
Soon enough, she was being driven away from the mansion. Knowing my ways inside the big house and having my trusty pins in hand, it wasn’t hard to slip into the house and start going from rooms to rooms as I needed. There were so many, it took me a while to find one interesting locked room. I picked the lock and when I opened I realized it was an office. It was definitely Adler’s.
I looked around and soon there it was. Incriminating documents. Not just about The Broiler, Neil, Uncle Charlie or even the whole Ice Box. But documents about everything and everyone in Chicago and what they had done. Mayor Adler was definitely a worse option than Mayor Peters. Vera wasn’t the only problem, Adler was a maniac. I grabbed what I needed about the Ice Box and hit it in the concealed holster under my leg. Then, I couldn’t stop snooping around to see if there was anything that compromised anyone else I cared about. Looking about documents on The Broiler kind of fell on the side
Adler was bonkers, that was the best word to describe it. I found pictures, pictures of ladies and flappers in compromising situations. Documents signed unwillingly, creepy telegrams about the people he’d controlled and those who he couldn’t so they were dead. Donovan said he’d kill for his family, but that’s too generous for Adler. He’d kill anyone he wanted if it suited him.
I backed away from everything. The energy of that office soon suffocated me. If I didn’t leave I felt like I could be sick again just from all that. I breathed more heavily before leaving the office, locking it again and soon making my way down the stairs. Once I got to the middle of the immense living room the front door suddenly opened to reveal the man itself.
Mayor Adler
