Played tennis with my professor today. He was genuinely happy to win. He’s been serious about competing against me recently. At first he went easy on me but now that I’ve caught up he’s been very determined to win. We had lunch after and coffee with lemon pound cake. We had a fun time. We have the same humor. He also gifted me 3 books. He easily spent around $100 that day. I realized again how expensive Seoul is.

back on my ‘julian being an augment is the most fascinating retcon of all time’ bullshit, im thinking about his relationship with tennis.

one of the reasons he gives for leaving it is that he just wasn’t cut out for it/wasn’t good enough for it and honestly i can imagine that being a complete lie.

tennis is most known as a solo sport, and all eyes are on you. anything unique or out of place happens, and people will see it, and i’m sure in a time period where augments exist, there’s only a fine line between being considered a ‘freak of nature’ and there actually being suspicion around whether or not you’re actually a freak of nature.

julian would have to toe that line. tennis is also a very highly regulated sport, the memoir i read of former world no. 1 ash barty recounted being drug tested (both blood and urine) 30 times in one year. i’m sure in the future, especially a future with genetic enhancement possible, tests will be even more thorough. so how good could julian be before he roused suspicion? how fast could his serves be, how many points could he win, how many miracles could he make, before someone started to wonder? tennis for julian could never be about how good he could be, it could only be about how good he was allowed to be.

so he gave it up. became a doctor, which i’m sure has its own set of risks, but less people are going to raise eyebrows about a man doing seemingly superhuman things if he’s helping people, compared to winning tennis tournaments, which is a more ‘selfish’ and attention-grabbing occupation. you’re not necessarily fighting to be considered the best doctor out there, just the best you can be for the people who need you to be.

(and i’m sure his parents preferred the less riskier option too 🙄)

So the military academy is basically my second alma mater now. I’ve been coming here often to play tennis recently. This is how my day went:

Tennis -> Lunch -> Chores -> Studying -> Writing CV

Tennis is such a big part of my life right now. I hope I can keep playing even after graduation.

I feel a bit clueless when writing CVs in English. I can definitely express myself better but I’m not sure how I should express it. The protocol is a bit different from Korean-style applications. I’m about to complete my 7th application. I plan on applying to 10 organizations by the end of this month.
