– you weren't as nervous as you thought you'd be, sitting in front of your desk, eyes glued to your monitor, hand hovering over the mouse. that was at least until you joined the video call and looked around at all the faces. one thing you were not expecting, despite how much you'd talked about your upcoming love or host on your streams and to your friends, was to see your multi-person situationship. oh shit. for a second, you smile faltered when your eyes landed on schlatt and ted shortly after.

if it had just been schlatt, you might've been expecting it, after all, he was pretty much a regular on the show, but since ted was there, on the same screen, you were doing everything in your power not to let your jaw fall slack.

this was going to be a long several hours, especially with how you'd see ted or schlatt look down and then as soon as their head would pop up, your phone would buzz on the desk and you'd wait until austin started talking again to check it.

Happy 2nd The-Right-Literally-Stromed-The-Capitol-And-Dems-Still-Won't-Stop-Platforming-Them-In-Elections Anniversary!!!

Let's place a bet, yeah?

I bet your lives that the person dems tries to pit themselves against for the presidential election in 2024 is gonna be some Ted Cruz/Ben Carson/Trump-esque right-wing Trashcan that Dems will think is too extreme to be an actual contender in a presidential race.

And I bet it's another close call because Dems refuse to see that the gap that made them different from Republicans is only for show at this point.

And I bet after the last couple election cycles that things go absolutely fucking left for all of us because now we All know the right is willing to storm the capitol meanwhile anyone short of being a straight up leftist can't decide if breaking a window at protest is a justifiable action in response to police literally murdering people in broad daylight on a regular basis.

So like. Yeah.

Super in love with the concept that despite knowing all this and despite the fact that leftists and progressives have pointed this out Year After Year that Democrats and liberals will STILL try and gaslight all of us into thinking it's just coincidence that they keep platforming harmful bigots and it's just Coincidence that They happen to be the only ones who can save us every election. And the rise in right-wing ideology DEFINITELY doesn't have anything to do with democrats literally advertising it to people (who otherwise would've supported a MUCH more conservative and center-right candidate....who could've beat a democrat).

.......but yeah vote blue. The party literally platforming and advertising extremists aren't extremists themselves. Definitely not. They're definitely taking Super Normal and Acceptable measures to keep themselves in power keep people in the USA safe. Platforming extremists and spreading right wing ideology is what good, compassionate people do. As long as the ends justify the means right? As long as it's for the greater good, right?

For the record.... Republicans are PISSED about this. And I understand that as Democrats and liberals you have an impulsive need to be happy about that. I get it. Republicans suck. You know what sucks more? Nazis. White supremacists. Even Republicans know that. They don't want Dems platforming them. Let me say that again. Even Republicans know how harmful and fucked up this tactic is.

And maybe the rising numbers of white supremacists and bigots don't pose a threat to you, but they do pose a Literal increasing threat to minorities who have to deal with and face them on a daily basis, a reality politicians and privileged liberals forget because it's not Your reality.

I can assure you I'd rather have a conservative republican who Doesn't increase the amount of people who want me dead sitting in office than to have a democrat in office who chose to risk MY life and safety for a seat that they won't even use to protect me (after THEY created more hateful violence around me) knowing full well they'll do the same thing in another 2 years.

I really don't want to be right but if I am, you can bet your ass I'm gonna drag this post out of the fucking depths to reblog during the campaigns. And it's not an election year or election cycle right now either so don't give me that "you're just a psyop/Republican/Russian plant" bullshit. I'm a minority of Several communities and as such I'm a fucking target for hate like this. I'm allowed to critique the people who intentionally INCREASE the number of people who want people like me dead.

Like you all can say a lot about Republicans but Republicans aren't the ones spreading right wing propaganda on primetime TV. Democrats are. And it's not even a secret. They don't even deny it. Y'all just don't wanna think about the implications of what that means for You as someone who supports Democrats. So you pretend it's fucking normal. An acceptable risk.

It's not, you freaks.

ted lasso 3x02 thoughts

Listen, I think we can all agree that this episode could pretty much be titled ‘Trent Crimm: Return of the Crimm’. I’m not even a big tedpendent girl but this was definitely their time.

I loved seeing Trent back at Richmond! It’s going to be great having more of James Lance on the show: one thing I did think was that Trent had definitely lost a little bit of his customary swagger – he’s back at Richmond but he’s no longer dominating the press room, he’s very much now in the jock-dominated locker room where the Roy storyline made it clear that he no longer has that commanding power that he did in the world of journalism (James Lance’s headcanon that Trent got into sports journalism because his dad wanted him to be into football – Trent is both of that world and not of it - lives in my head rent-free), and the entire arc of this episode was a really interesting way of easing Trent into this scene.

Being a non-sports, non-celebrity, non-rich person, the one gripe I often have with Ted Lasso is it very much takes the rich celebrity jock-ish status of the team as given – of course the himbos are justified in being paid ludicrous sums of money, of course it’s funny and not unsettling that Jamie thinks of non-celebrities as ‘muggles’. So having Trent, who’ll be the first locker-room-regular to come from a more academic, working-a-regular-non-sports-job-background, will be an interesting dynamic switch.

Roy’s entire arc with Trent just stabbed me in the heart. I always knew there had to be more to the ‘you’re a colossal prick and you always have been’ line and now I feel so freaking vindicated. And whoever pointed out that Roy refused to carry on the cycle of condemning teenage players back in s2 as a pundit…argh.

AND HE CARRIED THAT REVIEW AROUND WITH HIM FOR TWENTY-ODD YEARS. (Apparently the British comedian Eric Morecambe did a similar thing: carrying an old bad review of his first television appearance with him for the rest of his life despite reaching unparalleled success in his heyday. *sniffles*)

The one thing that was slightly jarring about Trent’s return was it felt like everyone (except for Roy) was surprisingly chill about him being at Richmond, considering that he was the journalist who broke the story about Ted’s mental health problems (Keeley even mentions gunning for Trent in the S2 finale). Of course, Ted being Ted we can assume he did a lot of sticking up for Trent at the time, but this only turns us back again to the big, painful, heart-stomping elephant in the room…how much does the rest of the Richmond crew know about the leak? And if it does ever slip out, how exactly is that going to go down?

On that note, I was under the impression that we only had to suffer more of Rupert if we also got more delicious Nate angst and arcs into the bargain. The fact that this week we had Rupert’s gross manipulations and no Nate is just a slap in the face.

(Anthony Head remains so wonderfully evil though.)

Zava! I’ve been hypothesising about him since leaked pictures of the first West Ham match hit Twitter, and I’m really interested in seeing where he goes…though, I’ll be real, right now he strikes me as just a prick. And not even a dumb, amusing prick like s1 Jamie (who I knew I was going to have a grudging soft spot for back when he piped up about the snacks being shit), but just…a prick. We’ll see though. I’m also really looking forward to seeing Jamie’s reaction to Zava: if he doesn’t like sharing the spotlight with another ace, or if it’s seeing the primadonna beneath the glamour and not wanting Zava to hurt his team.

And speaking of Zava’s hire…Rebecca’s takedown of him was magnificent, and her ability to be dragged into dodgy business decisions just to one-up Rupert are being played for laughs right now…but let’s be real, this show always plays things for laughs before turning the tables on you. Which basically means: this is going to hurt like a motherfucker.

Also REBECCA WAS THE OTHER WOMAN?!?!? God, that adds so many layers to Sassy telling her she’d hurt people while with Rupert. I cannot wait to find out more about that, it’s already hurting my heart.

DANI SCORING A GOAL WITH HIS FACE. Also his puppy dog excitement about Zava, which I’m sure won’t come back to bite him in the arse later.

I love how Higgins is basically the Richmond equivalent of Varys – he has his contacts everywhere, and no secrets are secret from him.

Keeley and Barbara! Honestly, I’m quite here for where this is going – Barbara’s attitude in this ep unkind and, let’s be honest, pretty classist when it came to Shazza(? Keeley’s model friend?), but also you do need someone to be boring and sensible and check the numbers when it comes to running a business. I’m hoping they keep working together well.

And that moment when Keeley watched Roy come back to Chelsea *lip wobble*

Actually, that entire Chelsea return moment…

AND the knowledge that Roy left Chelsea and Keeley because he couldn’t bear to be left… That revelation hurt. Not even Ted batting his eyes cartoon-anime-style could take the sting out of that kick to the chest.

Jamie continuing to go from strength to strength by trying to comfort Roy (unsuccessfully) in this episode, in his own unique fashion. ‘Old people are jumpy because of the war’ was incredible.

Not nearly enough himbos in this episode, I’m sorry to say, but the scene where they react to Zava, Trent, and Roy breaking up with Keeley was a thing of absolute beauty. And Beard’s shriek at the news was both hilarious and justifiable.

I’m also fascinated by the choice to have the himbos identify the best tactic to fight back at the Chelsea match, rather than Ted – it’s the second time in so many episodes when someone else has stepped up to do something which would traditionally be Ted’s role, and I’m wondering if there’s a pattern here. (And if there is, how Ted – who’s clearly uncertain about his place at Richmond – will interpret that.)

God, I almost nearly forgot that this was the episode where we found out that Isaac is a student of kinesics (Renaissance man!) and apparently regularly checks out Roy’s arse. Here we were all thinking Colin would be confirmed queer this season…is McAdoo about to sneak in from under our noses?

Also the post-gym scenes made this the episode where I realised the Greyhounds are definitely sporting a somewhat more...athletic look this season. I may have to put together some s1 v s3 comparison pics to be sure about this. Stay tuned.

New Job, Boom!

Hey friends,

Going to be a short one this week, but I definitely didn't want to let it pass without saying a little something. If you haven't heard otherwise yet, I'm now working at BOOM! Studios! Once I can say more, I'm sure I will, but it's early, things aren't really announced beyond that, and there are other matters to turn your attention to.

Announcements: It's the Global General Strike for Palestine! For the next week, people all over the world are striking from all sorts of regular activity to disrupt the economic systems supporting the destruction of Palestine and to put that time and energy into active protest movement. This is a pretty basic explainer of what you can do and know that doing anything is better than doing nothing, right? If you have to go to work, be visible. If you have to shop, be visible and thoughtful. If you have to rest, enjoy the things you already have. If you want to post, make it about what is happening. Current reports are estimating over 25,000 people have been murdered, with the death toll just going to keep rising between continued bombardments and the lack of resources. Over 60,000 people are wounded, 85% of the population has been displaced, and roughly 1 in 4 people is facing extreme hunger. No hospital is fully functional, for the ones that are still left standing. The IOF (Israeli Occupying Force) has admitted to exhuming graves, and have claimed it's to "find the hostages", but in the face of the other war crimes they've committed, it's hard to believe it wasn't vengeful malicious behavior to psychologically wound Palestinians as much as anything else. While we wait--possibly years--to find out if the International Court of Justice rules that Israel is in fact committing a genocide, people are going to continue dying from this. And so, hopefully, with a bit of concentrated disruption and pressure, this destruction that's already lasted 100+ days may finally find an end.

In terms of using your power and time, I've mentioned it before, but you could call your representatives. Fax their offices. Email them. Contact the White House. Join actions from organizations like Jewish Voice for Peace, American Muslims for Palestine, the Democratic Socialists of America, and be sure to focus your boycotts (during the strike and generally) on the businesses called out by BDS. You can take some time to read through Verso's Solidarity with Palestine reading list. Make signs for if you're going out protesting, to put in your windows, or coordinate outfits in Palestinian flag colors that show your solidarity. Make sure you're keeping an eye out for local events. If you see art installations, share them, and, yeah, that includes graffiti that bears the message. Let Palestinians take the lead in the global conversation on social media and if you see, say, your reps talking about other things, flood them with calls for a ceasefire in the replies.

If spending money brings you any comfort and you feel a need to put something into good practice, the Cartoonist Cooperative's page still lists a ton of resources for E-Sim cards.Bisan mentioned today that E-Sims are helpful, but their use is becoming more limited as the overall infrastructure has been so damaged that you need to be in a high place to use them.

Again, do what you can.

Gather round children it’s time for a Ted Talk about FEH and how I go about drawing these characters.

When making art for this game, I have found immense satisfaction in attempting to meet FEH on its level and remain fairly loyal to the Intelligence System’s approved content we have. This is remarkably challenging. For me, at least. I find this game’s design sensibilities run very counter to my own. That’s not a critique of any in game art of the characters (although I do think they improve greatly over time) as they fulfill their purpose really well. They are meant to be drawn 4 times max which means they can go pretty crazy on the details. But hahahaha I’m not doing that. Clearly. I’m drawing these guys by hand at different angles and posses fairly consistently, which is just not what they were built for. Don’t think when someone designed Kiran they thought of the person who’d be drawing them chilling ontop of a fridge with a bottle of mustard in their hand, you know?

So naturally I got to do some translating! And that’s the really fun part >:]

There are many things I had to find creative answers for, like Kiran’s face and Alfonse’s stupid haircut. But the one rotating rapidly in my brain atm is the Askr quartet in combat. I wanted lean hard into the fact that these four are, well, very human in comparison to every other combatant that enters Askr. They aren’t exactly helpless nor unskilled. If any of the trio raised their blade at Kiran, they’d start digging their own grave themselves. But the group are regular soldiers fighting against straight up warriors of legend. As individuals, Anna, Sharena, Alfonse, and Kiran are not that strong in comparison. No merges for these bitches they gotta work with what they got. However, they all know that. So they make up for their weaknesses through terrifyingly effective teamwork. Through the power of trauma bonding- I MEAN FRIENDSHIP they become a fucking terrifying force of nature. It’s like pissing off an ant hill or a wasps nest. A lancer goes for Alfonse and suddenly theres a swarm of five level 1 heroes making such a distraction that they don’t see Anna’s axe sweep through their Achilles heels or Sharena’s follow up shield bash.

So this means I get to convey their team composition through their body shapes and give them clear strengths and weakness for the others to cover. Which is just so god damn FUN. Like we all know Kiran is the squishiest of the squishy, so it’s really fun to show just HOW squishy they are through the immediate comparison Alfonse and Sharena. I gave those two sturdier square shapes, and thus making them shorter yet stocky. This makes it look like they could fucking launch Kiran’s bony ass to the moon and back. However, that’s on the condition that either of them could catch Kiran, as their tall slim build implies the lightweight speed they move with. Which is so!!!! Fun!!!! Aughhh big love. Kiran could literal use Sharena as cover to snipe enemies from. Meanwhile Anna and Alfonse are a bit ahead using reposition to let Anna provide swift dps without getting too beat up herself. And by reposition, I mean Alfonse using his shield as a jump pad to launch Anna at the enemy with. You know. Just bro things. Anna’s triangle shapes make her both just hearty and lean enough to pull it off, might as well go for it. Just make sure she’s properly supported and safe by the time the enemy phase rolls around you know?

And I swear, the combos just write themselves too. Like between Sharena and Alfonse, a poor soul gets caught in the worst version of ping pong as Alfonse captain America’s his shield between the two of them. Kiran could then use that same shield like Link does and surf out of enemy range, shooting at the enemy the whole way. It’s fun! These guys have the potential to really sync up during combat and be emblematic of their bonds with one another.

Example, Alfonse. Alfonse could TECHNICALLY be a stronger solo fighter if he ditched the shield. He has the constitution and skill to not actually need the extra protection, and if he decided to two hand his weapon (haha there’s a joke there) the damage he could do would be devastating. However, the shield isn’t for his protection, but to be better help to his closest friends. The shield isn’t taking as many hits for him as it is for Kiran and Anna, who can’t afford to carry shields without compromising their own effectiveness. Plus through creative (and probably not intentional) uses it helps better position them on the battlefield. It’s for THEM. The only time he’s going to stop using the shield is when they aren’t there fighting along side him.

Enter Líf.

He hasn’t had a shield for a long time now.

Uhm... *Thinks in 241 fics* Maybe Fed is Best? It's certainly not a happy ending, anyways.

Most of them, really? Words Don't Come Easily and Of Sequins and Scalpels are proper happy ever after ends.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I don't get hate. I have had someone ranting about my choices but I just blocked that convo after saying, "Thank you. I don't agree. Have a good day." I do this for fun, I haven't time for negative vibes.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yus. What kind? Kinda romantic, but also featuring many different walls (if I have a vampire who can hold someone up no problem I am going to use that to my advantage, lol!).

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I've done a few crossovers, and a few fusions. Craziest crossover? It isn't that crazy (yet) but Sanctuary/Ted Lasso. Fusion? Sanctuary/Pokémon. I love the idea of Helen as a Pokémon trainer. Oh, but Helen as The Arrow from DC has a special place too.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Someone wanted to translate one of my smutty fics to Russian but I never heard anything from them again, so I assume nothing.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Yes! With samsg1 when she came over to visit a few years back. We started planning it in my living room as our kids played Mario Kart then wrote it over GDocs together. Die Hard Isn't a Christmas Movie. It was fun, but brought up some residual feelings I had at school that I thought I had got through. Didn't tell her, because I didn't want to bring her down (because she is *so* so cool and I adore her). We do wanna write together again but we're both super busy (and I'm more a Sanctuary girlie at heart).

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

Helen/Nikola. They bring me joy.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Comedic timing? I'm not sure tbh. Oh! I can write a bonzer last line. You need a great last line when you write drabbles.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Length. I cannot write long fic on the regular to save my life. Like, I know I got OSaS done, and I'm slowly getting to the denouement of In The Nice Part of Town (very slowly), but it's haaaaaard. I want the flash bang dopamine fix posting oneshots give me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

If it's a language I know well (aka Cymraeg) then I'm filling that dialogue up. If it's a language I have a tiny bit of passing knowledge on, or I can ask someone, "Omg, how do I say [xyz] in [language]?", I'll use a bit of it. If it's a language I know not, and I don't want to go looking stuff up, I don't use it. XD If someone else wants to do it, more power to them. :)

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Voyager? Yeah, pretty sure it was Voyager.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

This is called cruelty. Today? Waves - Teslen, AU, everybody's human (kinda). It's rushed in places but I love that universe.

More DC Comics-themed mini comparisons.

Toby as Nightwing: Nah. You know what woulda been funny though? Toby as ye olde Golden Age Flash with the metal helmet. It'd be like his bell!

Thomas as Batman: No.

Victor as Superboy: No. Superboy is about looking up to a guy who you know you are meant to be like but coming up short on matching his abilities, and having to deal with what that means about your place in the world. Clearly a character meant for James. Superboy's color scheme is even First Day in the Yard James.

If you want red and black for Victor, El Diablo would be cool.

Gator as Swamp Thing: As obvious as Killer Croc was but okay.

Dash as Black Lightning: Not by a long shot! Black Lightning is responsible and has his shit together. Bash and Dash woulda been really cute as Más y Menos.

Toby as Blue Beetle: Yes if this were Ted Cord, but the face markings indicate that this Jaime Reyes so no. But I LOVE this livery on him! It's cashy as fuck.

Thomas as 52 Batman: Even more no than the other times I said no to Thomas as Batman.

Rosie as Star Sapphire: No. Star Sapphire is... complicated but I can't think of a single version of her that makes sense for Rosie. Good matches for Rosie are Supergirl, Wonder Girl, Stargirl, and Miss Martian.

Henry as Batman Beyond: Wow, no, but you know what? Sonny would be good for this version of Batman. Street hoodlum on a redemption arc? He wasn't around yet for this, but I'm tellin' you how it is.

Bash as Booster Gold: Okay, I think what they were going for were sort of similar liveries for Bash and Dash and while Booster Gold is far more appropriate to these guys than Black fkn Lightning is, you know who Booster Gold is really good for? Thomas. Booster Gold's deal is he's a glory-seeker who came from the future to become a superhero in the past using his future technology, but because he isn't acting out of pure good will, he often gets overshadowed by more just heroes. Also he and Thomas have the same color schemes. The blue's been tealed down a bit here for Bash.

James as Krypton Armor Superman: Okay, I actually had to research this one 'cause it's a New 52 thing and most of my DC knowledge comes from TV shows. Anyway, the deal with this is, Superman is normally invulnerable on Earth because of its yellow sun and so he does not need armor. On his home planet, the sun was red so no one had super powers and so if they were gonna get into fights, they had Krypton Armor. So it follows that if Superman goes to any other planet without a yellow sun, he needs armor because his powers are diminished. At least in the New 52. That's a thing that gets handwaved unless the story's too good normally. Anyway, that's kinda cool for James, since his paintjob is a sort of personality armor.

Emily as Wonder Woman: No.

Rosie as Starfire: Yeah! There you go! Now you're cookin' with butter.

Toby as Blue Beetle: No, but it looks so goddamn good on him!

Henry as Green Arrow: You know what? I didn't actually say if I thought Green Arrow was an appropriate character for Henry. The thing about Green Arrow is, he's kinda like Batman in that he's just a regular guy with a lot of money, but unlike Batman he's friendly and personable. The main thing about him, though, is that he tends to be characterized as a bleeding heart type who fights not only regular crime, but oppression from other rich guys and the military and shit like that. I don't recall this ever translating into treehugging, but I could see that kind of plot for him. Anyway, Green Arrow isn't perfect for Henry, but I can see some logic there.

James as Brainiac: loul no. Not to say that James isn't capable of some rat-fuck connivery, but that's actually not Brainiac's style. He's more of a 9D chess kinda guy.

Percy as Reverse Flash: I originally thought this was James and I already said I liked Flash for James, but Reverse Flash is quite good in respect to James' bullshit with Duck. But this is, in fact, Percy and I don't think this is him at all, but I do like that he's at least been given a character that isn't a sidekick to a character Thomas has. And Percy as a villain... now there's an idea that could bear more exploration. Kinda like that episode with Bulgy where he daydreams that Percy is the one keeping him and the roadways down? Percy as a villain is so fuckin' funny.

Belle as Raven: No. There's another match for Belle coming up and I think it's perfect. As for Raven... maybe late-game Mavis who's not so full of her own ideas anymore and takes shit more seriously?

Emily as Poison Ivy: No, I'm tellin' you, Poison Ivy is Daisy.

Hiro as Bane: No. Ryan might be fun as Bane. 'Cause of the pipes and all. As for Hiro, if you want to make him a villain, maybe Ra's al Ghul? Or Vandal Savage. You know, guys who live for fucking ever. If you want to not do that, you could make him Martian Manhunter, who's also a million years old, wise as all hell, and who in at least one continuity took up a secret identity as a normal man in an Asian country.

Belle as Batgirl: This isn't the perfect match for Belle, but yeah, I could see this. Might also work for Emily.

Gordon as Darkseid: Goddamn, what did Gordon ever do to you, Fisher-Price? Darkseid is one of the biggest bads there are. Gordon's kind of a dick a lot of the time, but he's not that bad. That bein' said, if you want to make him a big bad, I think he'd look real handsome as the Anti-Monitor. Otherwise, I think he'd ought to be Superman. He's biggest and best and a member of the press.

Luke as Beast Boy: Yes. Perfect.

Ferdinand as Martian Manhunter: Nope. For real. Lobo. It'd be fun!

Belle as Big Barda: There she is! Perfect, beautiful, love that for her.

Gordon as Azrael Batman: Man, here's a dark-ass take too, goddamn. What do they got against Gordon? Suffice to say, no, I don't think insane assassin taking up the mantle of Batman is right for ol' Gordo. Although, Azrael was a test-tube baby which is kinda like being a prototype. All the same, no.

Henry as Green Arrow: Yeah, all right.

Millie as Harley Quinn: No, Rebecca.

Diesel 10 as The Joker: No, Lex Luthor.

Hiro as Steel Superman: Okay, so Steel Superman (just Steel) was a guy who tried to become Superman after actual Superman died. Had a metal Superman suit, kinda like Metal Cap Mario but it's Superman. Except it's not Superman, it's a guy dressed as Superman if Superman wore a metal suit because regular Superman is dead. Yeah, it's confusing. Howeveur, apart from being Metal-skin Supeman, Steel's also railway themed! His secret identity is John Henry Irons and he carries a sledgehammer and has wrist-mounted rivet guns. Is it perfect for Hiro? No, but I'm kinda into it!

Porter as Captain Cold: Okay enough but I'm still tickled about him being Hourman for the sand.

Percy as Red Tornado: I like Red Tornado way more for Victor, but I don't hate this. It's not right for Percy though. Let's see. Static maybe, if we're bein' serious. Long Shadow would be a fun joke since Percy's short and small. Lagoon Boy if we want to be mean.

Stanley as Black Hand: Uh, in a really tenuous way, you might say that Thomas interpreting Stanley's arrival as a threat to his position is sorta like Black Hand stealing Green Lantern ring energy. But I wouldn't. I think he'd look quite handsome as Aztek.

Gordon as Darkseid: No.

Paxton as Lex Luthor: No, Diesel 10.

Luke as Beast Boy: Yes!

Edward as Arctic Batman: No, but that's a cute livery.

Sidney as Mister Miracle: No. If anyone should be Mister Miracle, a magician specializing in escape artistry, I think it should be Oliver.

Diesel as Captain Boomerang: Love it 'cause Diesel's bullshit always comes back around to him, don't it?

Diesel 10 as Deadshot: You know what? At first glace I was like "no", but actually, I'm like "yeah". 'Cause see, on the one hand, Deadshot is an impeccable marksman whereas Diesel 10 can hardly control his hydraulic arm at all, such that he gave it a name and treats it as if it has a mind of its own. On the other hand, Deadshot is a tactical genius and (ignoring The Magic Railroad) Diesel 10 is too. For a train, anyway. Deadshot is also a demolitions expert and Diesel 10 once inadvertently set the Dieselworks on fire. Overall, yeah, I like this match for its irreverent play on parallel.

Millie as Bumblebee: Yyyyyeah, okay. Millie is one of the more capable trains (it's why she's in charge of the Estate Railway) and she has a similar sensibility to Bumblebee. Not completely deadpan, able to joke and have fun, but takes the job seriously.

Thomas as Superman: Nope.

Bert as Shazam!: They gave 'Arry Shazam the year previous, but I'm really thinking Phillip would be the best Shazam. Phillip might not have been on the show yet, but he's perfect for Shazam. As for Bert, since I suggested Metallo for 'Arry, how about a wild card match: Steel. Those two fought once and they're both metal-themed. If we're disregarding matched pairs, I think one or the other of them would also make a good Orion.

James as Flash: Yes, perfect.

Skarloey as Arsenal: I want to say no, but there is a little bit there maybe. Skarloey gettin' his extra wheels and new cab is a little like Arsenal getting his hotshit robot arm. And Arsenal is kind of a dickhead for a while while he gets over hisself. I don't know if Arsenal is who I'd pick for Skarloey, but there's at least a tenuous logic.

Victor as Hawkman: No, make my boy Red Tornado!

Scruff as Armor Batman: Nnnnno, I don't think so. Still voting that Scruff would make a cute Creeper.

Ferdinand as Mr. Freeze: Actually, I wouldn't say no to Porter as Mr. Freeze. That'd be quite apt. But I maintain, Ferdinand oughta be Lobo.

Charlie as the Riddler: Yes!

Emily as Vixen: No. Nia would make a fun Vixen because the thing about Vixen is she has animal powers, but she's actually never been in the jungle and has no survivalist knowledge at all. She's a fashion model and lives in a loft in Chelsea.

Salty as Clark Kent: I have a tenuous thought about this which is, Salty is always tellin' his yarns and these dumbass trains believe him which is quite similar to Superman putting on a pair of glasses and telling people he's not Superman and they believe him too. So yeah, all right.

Tag game #3 (man, I am cranking these out today). I was tagged by the amazing @rebelrebelwrites. We had so many of the same choices! This was a fun one to realize what I rewatch on a regular basis plus thinking about the ones that really hit home for me. The comfort shows and the masterpieces may actually be in order of favorite 🥰

#1. Current Hyperfixation - The Rings of Power: Was there any doubt that this would be on here?

#2. Comfort Show - Once Upon a Time: Ok, so I never finished this one, but seasons 1 & 2 were pretty amazing. Plus Rumbelle.

#3. Comfort Show - The Vampire Diaries: Delena forever, friends. Those later seasons eventually got better!

#4. Comfort Show - She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: I know this was technically “meant” for kids, but the themes of friendship and for what it means to have the possibility of change were really powerful. The LGBTQ+ rep was stellar, as well, with the found family characterization off the charts.

#5. Masterpiece - Fleabag - The way this show hits is incredible. So funny and emotional, and the writing is some of the best I’ve ever seen.

#6. Masterpiece - Avatar: The Last Airbender: What more can be said of this true masterpiece. The story development, character development, pacing, etc. It’s all incredible. And Zuko - one of the best character arcs of all time.

#7. Masterpiece - Ted Lasso: The major themes of forgiveness and the transformative power of belief and community make me cry while it’s still one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in ages. I have literally watched the first season 8 times.

#8. Masterpiece - Our Flag Means Death: I don’t even know what to say to express how much I love this show. The absolute lack of queer baiting, the emotional arcs, the musical cues and choices, etc. etc. This show is everything to me and deserves to finish in all its glory (come on HBO…don’t fuck this up…)

I'm just...Roy yelled at the top of his lungs at a bunch of children, and it's treated as a cute quirk. Yes, of course the context is different with Nate drawing attention to a specific player rather than general yelling and getting super personal, and I obviously do not support yelling at employees, but something about the way people laugh at Roy shouting and breaking things for no reason, Isaac throwing stuff, all the players making life difficult for hotel employees and apparently stealing stuff despite being loaded athletes, Sassy harassing a waiter, Roy discouraging Phoebe from cursing but being proud of her elbowing a girl in the neck as if that's somehow better, etc. while jumping on every negative action by Nate - notably not white, rich, or "traditionally masculine" - as a sign of him being fundamentally bad leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. Nate stands out so much as the only non-rich, non-white character that gets to show real depth and interesting flaws. He's so much fun to watch! But the way people are all "I never liked him", or "I feel vindicated", or wishing violence on him makes it seem like they were looking for an excuse not to like him, and feels so much like the old "people are bullied for a reason, if they're weird, they have it coming".

Like you, I have so much fun watching and (as everyone is painfully aware of by now) talking about Nathan, because he has real depth and interesting flaws. For me, I really enjoy connecting how his actions, feelings, and beliefs connect (or conflict) with the show's broader context. Also, he's funny, quirky, and delightful.

So, yeah, it's frustrating when people flatten him into a Ticking Timebomb of Evil, or the Antithesis of Ted's (presumed) Goodness, or AFC Richmond's Designated Patient.

But it's also kind of sad when people flatten other characters into harmless, lovable comedic caricatures. That's what happens when Nathan's misdeeds are taken seriously, and those of other characters are brushed off as just a joke or an inevitable facet of the football industry. Why would people do that to their faves? Can't they see all the fun I'm having picking apart Nathan's storyline? (*touches earpiece* What's that? My intensity and occasional glibness can come off as barely suppressed rage? Not again!)

There can be some pretty gross subtext to why and how characters are excused from accountability. For example, Colin and Isaac's harassment of Nathan is sometimes excused because it happened Before Coach Lasso (BC, for short). While Nathan's verbal abuse of Will and Colin is framed as worse than literal daily physical assault because it occurred After Arrival of Dad Figure Ted (AD, for short). Ted is positioned as a White Savior who brings enlightenment to the masses, forgiving past sins for all who Believe. And Colin and Isaac are positioned as spiritually immature, ignorant children rather than adults savvy enough to exploit the fucked-up power dynamics of their industry. (You know, like Nathan in S2, but with regular beatings.)

(To be fair to fandom, the White Savior Ted and his Infantilized Himbos trope didn't burst fully formed from our collective fannish head. Canonically, Ted does encourage this kind of thinking. He refers to the players (grown adult men, a significant number of whom are Black) as "boys." He uses the father figure thing a lot. And he did convince them to burn a cherished possession in order to appease spirits he doesn't entirely believe in. A little bit of cult leader behavior there. More things to add to the This Would be Taken Seriously if It Were Nathan pile.)

My point is: it's a double-edged sword. As someone who enjoys the non-Nathan characters, I don't like it when their actions are stripped of their ethical, social, and financial weight. I read it as an insult, a diminishing of the characters.

I know that we are well into the 21st century and this means we can no longer talk about Buffy but… I’m gonna talk about Buffy. Or, more precisely, Anya.

Just gonna drop off my my official “death of the author” disclaimer and now we gonna proceed.

Part of my Personal History with [media] series

A Personal History of Anya Jenkins

Anya Jenkins is a character first introduced to the show in season 3 as a seemingly one off demon who the Scooby Gang must defeat to get back to the status quo of their senior year in high school.

As a teenager, I did not like this character, especially after she came back as a series regular from season 4 onward, after having lost her powers and becoming human. She became a love interest long before a character standing on her own two feet and I just... I just hated her honestly. She was annoying, overly literal, always asking questions and leaning on Xander far too much. None of the rest of the main characters seemed to like her or give her much time, and so neither did I.

The benefit of age and memory is the ability to reflect on media we've consumed at various points of our lives and consider how that interacts with updated views of ourselves.

At 16 years old, as I was the year this character was introduced, I was painfully aware of my growing need to fit in. I consumed bucket loads of media to help me understand how I might best do this as I'd realised that simply asking my peers was no longer an acceptable way to gather this information.

I hated my own social awkwardness and lack of understanding what seemed basic to others, but it was that much worse when I saw it exampled in characters who could be my peers, and whose behaviour I had no hope to control or effect.

This was especially true in a show that was my own special interest for all of my teens and most of my 20s.

The first time I liked Anya in a Buffy rewatch was as I was starting to come to terms with the fact that I myself was autistic. And I don't honestly think this was an accident. I had aged, but Anya remained the same: a 1000 year old demon, yes, but also stuck in the slowly aging body first of a 18 year old who only ever lived to the age of 22.

Why do I choose to break all this down now? Because I realised last night how much this depiction of a neurodiverse near ancient being surrounded by young people in the 21st century has shaped the way I've viewed vampire and other supernatural media ever since.

Unf, would you look at that physical recoil from the surrounding Scoobies (perhaps with the exception of Tara who herself has a strong case for a very different presentation of neurodiversity).

Homework today is finding any media involving vampires or demons that does not have this moment: Where the humans in the room are faced with the inability to avoid when someone doesn't conform to their view of how the world ought to be. Mostly this sense of oddness is shown through one of many well known existing tropes such as unexpectedly cold extremities, or blood where it ought not be, too fast healing, or how they speak/move. Anya, in particular, is off putting in two these ways (how she speaks always & blood where it ought not be in one ep of season 7).

Now we finally come to the point of why. And I believe that it's because characters who live as long as Anya must, at the core of their narrative, keep themselves separate from humans (because either humans are prey, or they grow old and die). It's this fact that has the knock on of forcing old demons to distance themselves from the contemporary and constantly changing/updating cultures of the present day world — cultures cobbled together by the very humans they must in turn avoid.

If you don't practice being part of something, how can you be good at it as those who are native?

The culmination of my TED Talk is: This always happens when an ageless character breaks the rules of their narrative and forms attachment with a human from whom they're supposed to remain distant. There is almost always immediately a sort of disconnect that comes between that character and their human counterpart. Sometimes it is merely the awkwardness / discomfort of something akin to uncanny valley.

And sometimes it looks a lot like autism. I'm not saying it isn't. Anya's portrayal offers that sense of belonging-slash-discomfort to many autistic people watching, depending on where they are on their own autistic journey.

Maybe the reason Anya was never officially acknowledged by the writers as autistic is because Buffy was a show that aired primarily in the 1990s. But it's also possible that it was never acknowledged because this outcome in media is something that looks a lot like autism, but it's not the only way it is intended.

In Anya's case, as with more than one of the immortal characters of the Buffy universe, being dropped back into mortal humanity actually is an achievable goal for these immortals (desired or not / where they belong or not) which only further puts a spotlight on how well they manage to sink or swim in this human dominated culture. And, imo, only makes the subsequent portrayal the richer for it.

🍑 —If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?

Hmmm this is a tough one because I honestly don’t do/think of crossovers very much? I rly like working within a piece n finding things to expand on inside it. I may unfortunately have to go w the boring answer of I probably wouldn’t JNDBDBD It’s not like I don’t read stuff either but I’m not exactly a literature man in my passions as reading takes a lot of brain power, so idrk any quotes or overarching things id try to tie in? This is honestly kinda interesting to me on its own that I just. Don’t have anything. But ig that’s just how it is fhdhdjbd I’m not rly a crossover or references dude I suppose.

Maybe something with Miguel/2099 stuff and Terry from Batman Beyond? Somth ab future versions of characters n legacies n Terry’s thing of helping an older roughened guy care ab ppl again, and the fact that he had spiderman inspo in his making, idk. But that’s more just a musing more than anything serious.

I have many n don’t have one (I have a super hard time with single favorite characters) so I will not be giving all of them n just give some rapid fire thoughts from across the board.

I love trans Miguel O’Hara and Gwen Stacy esp from the spiderverse movies as I think those readings of them are a very thematically appropriate and fascinating way to explore them, and I love trans people

Comics Steven from MK paints the body’s nails and gets them regular manicures/pedicures/hair care treatments, etc n has an extensive collection of Bath and Bodyworks soaps and scrubs and lotions. They also have semi-sensitive skin and he’s very aware of ingredients and what will work for them

Hera w359 is aLso such a trans woman to me there is so much ab the self and holding it and creating it and breaking from the miles people tell you to stay in and finding the humanity in yourself and creating a new sense of self outside of programming and the literal voice someone forced you to have. I love her so dearly and aUGGH

Show!Steven from MK has a record player and is very careful about taking them out of the sleeves, but not careful about how they end up stacked up. Jake does CDs. Marc downloads random tracks onto their phone or only listens via YouTube (not YouTube music just looking up on YouTube)

��—What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)

Well this isn’t rly underrated bc stuffs still kicking off but if someone hasn’t already, a timeloop fic for ATSV Miguel would slap absolute ass. I’m also on the (sort of but also not always?) rare train of genderqueer jake, and ofc the very rare train of some-flavor-of-transfem Marc. Also love non binding and non top op trans men/mascs and would lOve to see that around more. I’m also someone who does a lot of inhuman body exploration which while not uncommon in the big scheme I find a way to work into a lot of my headcanons for characters at some point and can be a huge draw (like to Ted n Jack from wwbn, the MK sys with weird Khonshu body effects and differing levels of human connection, or Miguel w his many mutations n differing levels of spider ppl connection).
