I must say that as much as the idea of Rebecca ACTUALLY getting back together with Rupert is deeply revolting, I loved their little moments this episode (especially at the end) because there is just something so so satisfying about seeing Rupert realize exactly how amazing Rebecca is, and how much he fucked up by losing her, and how completely devastating it is that he will never, ever get her back.

I wouldn't say Ted Lasso did any of its abuse/abuse recovery narratives "well" but I do think they did parts of all of them like really well, which is what makes it all so incredibly frustrating. Like, showing how hard it can be to intervene by having the Diamond Dogs be avoidant and non-confrontational despite their mutual concern about Beard's relationship with Jane, but then having Higgins step up and say something anyway (and even though Beard didn't take his advice, it still felt like okay, this is a good, this is a realistic and messy and complicated narrative to tell that nevertheless highlights the importance of speaking up and being there for your friends even if it doesn't always work out how you'd planned), having Beard & Roy jump in to help Jamie at Wembley and Roy respond so well to Jamie's story in Amsterdam, humanizing Rupert in International Break and giving the backstory for why Rebecca fell in love with him and offering them a moment of real connection again without once pushing the narrative that he should be forgiven or that Rebecca even considers for a second taking him back...all that shit was GOOD!!! it was really nuanced and complex and good!! andddd then it ended with the BeardJane wedding, a James Tartt Sr. forgiveness agenda and Rupert morphing immediately into an over-the-top cartoon villain like what 😭 they had the capacity...and yet!!! nooooooo.

The juxtaposition between these shots is so interesting to me... One couple hidden in a dark alley, one in a well lit room. A man whose secret could destroy his career, one whose many affairs have never done any damage to his reputation.
I also love how well the mise-en-scène matches the character whose perspective we're seeing: Trent's scene is gothic, mysterious; Rebecca's is glossy, black and gold, luxurious.

Don't mind me, just putting on my screenwriter hat to dream up Ted Lasso s4:
4.01 - Sleepless in Richmond
AFC Richmond adjusts to life without Ted. Newly-appointed Diamond Dog Roy has some big news to share.
4.02 - All 'Er Nuthin'
Ted receives an ultimatum.
4.03 - My Best Friend's Wedding
Keeley and Shandy's rivalry continues over a wedding dress.
4.04 - The Winner Takes It All
The team faces their toughest match of the season. Rebecca and Bex face off against Rupert.
4.05 - The Parent Trap
Ted & Michelle struggle with co-parenting. In the run-up to Roy & Keeley's wedding, an honest mistake puts Ted & Rebecca in an awkward position.
4.06 - Exes and Oh's
Roy, Keeley and Jamie have a difficult conversation.
4.07 - Ding Dong, The Rich Man's Dead
A shock death rocks Richmond.
4.08 - Girls Just Wanna Have Funds
Keeley finds her feet with her new business venture. Eventful hen and stag parties leave everyone with more questions than answers.
4.09 - Reason to Believe
Ted returns to Richmond. Revelations from Trent's book come back to haunt him.
4.10 - People Will Say We're In Love
Roy & Keeley's wedding day arrives. Ted & Rebecca have some unfinished business to address.

Y’all like, Rebecca NEEDED to fully reconcile and remember that there were good times in her relationship with Rupert and that he too is a human. She can’t move on without it. He can’t be anything other than a villain to destroy without it. And she did so beautifully, with boundaries fully intact. Putting the Hockney painting back up means she can have ambivalence which is key for emotional processing!!
