Grief in art
Grief is an interesting subject for depiction, because it isn't ever really just one feeling. It's a cluster of feelings, an array of very different, sometimes almost contradictory emotional states, which collectively we understand as expressions of that one underlying condition, which is grieving.
So how do you show that? How do you take that and make it visible to an audience? Many, many artists have tried, and their attempts are varied, fascinating, and very occasionally heartbreaking.
Let's take a little non-comprehensive walking tour of grief in art history, from the 1400s to the 2020s, from the religious to the cartoony, and get in our feelings a bit.

I just spent six and a half hours listening to a youtuber I really like ranking and dissecting every hasbin hotel song Not by how they sound (though he Does go into what he thinks of the music and why, it's quite delightful. he sings along to quite a few of them and I'm very much so still getting used to the fact that he's apparently really good at it), but how successfully they push the story Forwards.
and I have to say that I now have opinions on hasbin hotel despite never having seen it jklfasdkjlfsda
I'd really suggest the video to anyone who's a fan of the series, he even took the hit to monetization to play all of the songs in full so he could analyze them properly.
youtube
I think I really do understand Why this series took off the way that it did. yes it is a series with some pretty deep flaws, but I'd argue that the vast majority of them come down to the time limitation.
I think it's safe to say that they had a ton of ideas that they desperately Wanted to cram into this first season, but they didn't have the episode count to fully explore them (or really do more than Introduce them in some instances).
and I Do think it's likely that they made the choices that they did because a second season wasn't a guarantee. if they decided to be more conservative with their first season, let it take its time with less on its plate, they might have never gotten the chance to share some of these ideas At All.
and I do genuinely think that this is Part Of its success, at least in terms of fandom.
there are lots of fandoms for lots of media, but I feel like some of the most prolific have been for flawed series that have Potential. that have Ideas and themes and characters that resonate with people, that people can see More in, but don't stick the landing in the way that they could have for Whatever reason.
and I say this as someone who has Been in those sorts of fandoms near exclusively. it's Fun. it's Fun because it turns this story into a sandbox that you get to play with. to fill in the details yourself and see how Other People would as well.
and the key here is that there are parts about it that Must be likeable, you can even like All of it, while still feeling like there's room for that reinterpretation and Play. and I feel like a lot of people grow even closer to a character and to a world through doing so.
have you ever seen the fan content that homestuck inspired? It's That. it's that exactly.

TB Skyen has been making a series of shorts about the best panel in each One Piece chapter. His short for chapter 58 runs long, because it's a chapter with a very important moment that needs a bit of setup and deserves at least a bit of analysis. Unfortunately, that means it's too long to be a Short™, which I guess means YouTube isn't showing it to people who watch the other One Piece Shorts™, because the chapter 58 short has less than half the views of the other shorts.
And that's sad! This more detailed look at the chapter does a lot that he couldn't cram into 60 seconds. There's little stuff, like "Nothing but worthless gold spills out" and pointing out how this ties into Sanji's later actions. That stuff is nice, but it's not the only thing that would be lost if Skyen had to cram this into one minute.
He talks about the relationship between Sanji and Zeff, about what motivates them. He talks about the connection they form here, the connections that lead them to sacrifice so much for each other.
That's One Piece.
I don't know how many of y'all care about One Piece. If you watch this video, maybe that'll change.

Making Arcane "canon" is a bad idea, and probably not actually possible
In the aftermath of Arcane's success, Riot has decided that one of the biggest problems with their storytelling and lore is that it's internally inconsistent, and that popular stories like Arcane are not technically "canon" with the rest of the universe. They propose to solve this by making Arcane canon, and streamlining the rest of the universe around it.
Just one small problem: the premise of Arcane is that magic is rare, it's a fairly low-magic setting, and Runeterra is an ultra-high magic setting absolutely sprawling with mages, artifacts, magic landscapes and entire magic continents. These universes cannot be reconciled without introducing major problems to one or both of them, to their inevitable detriment.
Much more importantly: League of Legends' lore and worldbuilding problems are far, far more systemic and deeper than merely "it is a bit confusing that the in-game champions aren't like the Arcane characters," and trying to solve it by streamlining everything is entirely misdiagnosing the problem.
Let's discuss.

man. there's something off-putting about how the respectively most powerless princess (damsel) and voice (the broken) allowing themselves to be murdered as an act of devotion and then viewing said murder as an appropriate punishment for failing their saviors are treated so differently. one isn't registered as having a horror done to her person and the other is hated for being depraved.

@ohnoitstbskyen’s “Nine Essays About Characters That Matter” video literally struck me through the heart with a dagger. The way it’s presented as stories told by people of their blorbos with mister the big skyen commenting in between is perfect. So perfect i’ve been inspired to write a small essay about my Characters That Matter, if this is just rambling into the wind or not, i just want to express my thought in this form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s Yang, it’s Yang, of course it’s Yang how could it not be Yang Xiao Long. Yang as a character - and rwby as a whole literally flashbanged my entire humanity in june of 2022.
Lots of people love Yang, how couldn’t you. Maybe you relate with her backstory in relation to Ruby, how she was forced to grow up and play parent for Ruby because both their mom’s fumbled the bag. Maybe you’re someone who’s lost a limb or otherwise disabled and find triumph in how she fights on despite her disability. For me, it’s neither - what gets me going about her is her personality, particularly in early volumes. She’s this larger than life, fun loving person who’s the embodiment of warm fire who brings you in and is your friend. Which is exactly the kind of standard i try to live up to. Another aspect of this side of her i love is the protector aspect she inhabits, she was Ruby’s protector, as a huntress she’s everyone’s protector. I want to be her in every way imaginable.
The “Rule of Cool” in character designs, which is that if something is cool enough it deserves to exist is so very alive to me, and gosh is Yang cool. she’s cocky, her personality and silhouette is so big and massive and imposing. “let’s kiss and make up then you’ll learn” is such a good lyric for her from the song about her “i burn”. These attributes of her and the rule of cool are all things that i identify with myself. I’m also massive and cocky and i think i’m awesome but i am literally Ivern in red flannel. Yang does the whole damn thing, looks the part, saves the day sometimes, has an emotional background and gets bitches all while being so so human.
To continue on with Yang’s cool factor i want to touch on her design as a whole. It’s perfect, that’s just a fact. My favorite part about her is her hair. Big wavy hair that gives her a massive anchor in her design as well as giving her a unique silhouette compared to other characters in the show. Secondly her outfits she wears in different volumes are always the best. Her outfits are practical, and look like they totally belong to a biker girl who beats the shit out of you. Even down to her more finite details, like the purple bandana around her knee which relates to her relationship with Blake.
Tumblr media
A tertiary point about yang that’s fundamental in *why* i like her so much is how she is this strong, imposing and daunting character, but she’s still presented as feminine. The way that rwby as a show presents Yang as a whole and tows a line between allowing Yang to be a masculine aligned berserker while not falling on “butch” tropes is so important to me. Yang is almost an entire new breed of femininity, one that i align with a lot.
Yang is so very much a part of me, But so is this fucking asshole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
POWER SWEEEEEEEEP i love Power for so many reasons that are so painfully simple.
Her backstory or storyline isn’t a tragedy like Yang or even Denji. Her backstory is just she was a lonely freak and found a cat. It’s so simple, yet i relate to it in my own way. And it’s so important to me to relate to a character in my own way. Never in my life have i found a character i related to, not once. And power gets me somewhat close to that feeling we all deserve.
Power borrows from the “Rule of Cool” less than yang, but is still great from a design wise on her own. When i first saw her in the intro i figured she was going to be a typical boring shonen-girl-type, but i was immediately proved wrong. Her human form design is so simple but portrays so much about her. The devil horns constantly present in her design are testament to her troublemaker attitude, which are contrasted by the business shirt and tie that she shares with her peers in public safety. **Spoilers for the ending of CSM part 1** When she assumes her devil form upon coming back from getting bang’d she’s a crazy looking monster, similar to kindred (who i also love dearly). This monstrous form she assumes for only a few pages are easily my favorite moment in chainsaw man as a whole. There’s just something right about this asshole getting to be a monster for like 10 min and giving up her life to save her state appointed brother
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Power is, for all intensive purpose, a comedic relief character - in a show about horrible miserable topics with a messed up sense of humor, which is another trait i find relatable, i’m also the comedic relief girl.
Thankfully Power isn’t *just* her awful traits that make her hilarious and ridiculous. She’s a dutiful protector, of Meowy and of Denji in later chapters. She’s shown to have deep seeded fears in her character, her submission to makima, her impairing fear of the dark after darkness devil. These additions into her silly persona make her a well rounded, entertaining and fun character.
These two characters aren’t related at all, besides both being from shonens. As personality’s, their both big, loud and powerful which is the key element that makes me so attuned to them. The shows i watched in 2022, and subsequently become obsessed and consumed by shaped me as a person completely. And having characters for the first time in my life i saw myself in has been a liberating experience. I truly understand what TB Skyen meant when he said: “sometimes characters are important”.

Hello. I’ve come to bother you again. Multiple questions bear with me. First, what do Seraphim do, like what’s their job? Follow up, if Sera is the only Seraphim to last since Eden what’s her job and why is no one upset that she seems really bad at it considering how many angels Fall in this AU? Is Maria a Roo/Root of all evil mysterious equivalent?
This got real long real fast.
The seraphim still stand the ones who 'talk' to God and are a heavy political power in heaven. They also try to be a positive figure but only Emily has ever been good at that.
Sera is the only angel to stand on equal footing to Micheal, while she sucks at her job every other seraphim is either Emily or just a mess and every mass falling has been tied to someone else fucking around the finding out.
Sera is good leader on the face of things and that's what ultimately matters when the only other option for a seraphim leader is Emily.
Maria was never the best at the whole Seraphim thing, Sera never talked about how she hadn't heard from God so Maria assumed it was just a her problem.
Maria isn't Roo but Roo definitely influenced her. She got obsessed with finding out how to create life and finding out whether God was alive or not, courtesy of Roo implying that he might have perished millenia ago.
She started making creatures out of mutilated souls and went on a killing spree that got blamed on the toy maker because she was the toy maker, heaven just didn't know that yet.
Not long after that she disappeared into hell and started building power in the hopes of creating organic life.
This will eventually work with Seven being born, they were named seven because it took 7 tries once Maria had put together how to actually create life.
This is what will finally make heaven intervene with the toy maker and Sera will end up killing Maria but all too late because Seven was a little too much like their creator to go out without a bang.
With Roo, what makes her so strong is her ability to control the bad things, she was heaven's, and God's, first enemy. The metaphorical boogie man and she created and influenced many monsters.
Most importantly, she gave Lilith and later humanity the ability to become and even create monsters. Not in the sense that Maria could, but given enough negative emotion and evil actions monsters can come to life.
For a human, if they suck enough they'll just become monsters. That's why even if a sinner is redeemed they're still clearly a sinner. They really did fuck up their one chance and it'll follow them no matter if they get better or not.
Hybrids are a great show of this, Velvette is a shit person and her demonic traits are much more noticeable when she shifts to her unbound form. Charlie is more Eldritch by every sense of the word but much like angels people get a sense that despite how odd she is, she's kind.
Magic is greatly affected by the actions of the user, both Velvette's and Charlie's magic are grand but Velvette's is made to hurt and change people. Charlie is plenty strong on the offensive side but healing magic is what she's best at. Fighting wise she fast and can tear people apart but the only magic she can use that can hurt people is fire.
Another important thing is that everyone in hell encompasses one of the 7 deadly sins but who it shows is different. Velvette sees herself on a podium above most people, same as Lucifer. But Charlie's pride is more pointed towards protecting what she sees as hers.
The seven deadly sins all tied back to being willing to disregard people for self benefit one way or another. Whether it's greed making you ignore people's well-being or wraith making you hate something so much that it doesn't matter who you hurt, you will come out on top.
That's my main gripe with Vizipop's take on the 7 deadly sins, they're all about pushing other people aside for personal wants. Ozzie being all about consent or Beezabub being against overindulgence is inherently against what the 7 deadly sins are all about.
Lust isn't necessarily sexual but it is wanting someone so bad that you don't care if it's in a hurtful manner. Mammon is such a good character for the sins because he is willing to abuse others and ignore the well-being of his fellow person.
Emily fell because she refused to back down on her stance on heaven needing to change, she fell because she put aside what ultimately was better for heaven for what was better for humans period. She still overlooked plenty of people and refused to be wrong. Her sin was anything technically bad but she still fell because she was willing to overlook people for her goal.

TB Skyen's "Boss Designs of X" series is structured in a pretty unique way that I find interesting.
The first part of each episode shows Past Skyen going through part of a FromSoft game, the level leading up to the boss, and then finally the boss fight. Along the way, he mixes normal Let's Play commentary with design thoughts about the boss and its context, as well as some explanations from Future Skyen explaining things not covered by Past Skyen.
Once Past Skyen beats the boss, he hands the video to Future Skyen, who starts a scripted video essay about the boss and its design, particularly its visual design and how it informs the broader story. He refers back to points and impressions made in the first portion, separating wheat from chaff, turning those scattered ideas into a proper thesis with which to close the video.
Skyen has described the "Boss Designs" series as a passion project, and it's a project that deserves that passion. The gameplay and scripted analysis compliment one another, the former showing context that most video essays would need to tell you about. It's particularly suited to FromSoft games, which rely on context and mechanics more than many of their peers.
But it also needs to be a passion project, because it doesn't get many views. Part of this is because it fails to please the fearsome Rhythm of Al'Goh, particularly since it thinks of Skyen as primarily a League of Legends YouTuber. But part of it is due to its unique, interesting structure.
While plenty of other video game YouTubers do both Let's Plays and analytical videos, they're generally segregated—often to separate channels, such as Daniel Floyd's PlayFrame and New Frame Plus channels. The reason for this is partly because of the Rhythm of Al'Goh, but partly because people watch Let's Plays and video essays for very different reasons.
Speaking from personal experience, I watch PlayFrame to relax without needing to actively think much, and I watch New Frame Plus (and other video essays) when I want to think about something from a new angle. I want to watch more of Skyen's "Boss Designs" series, but I'm rarely in the mood for more than half of the package.
I want "The Boss Designs of X" to be successful. Skyen knows what he's talking about and knows how to explain it. But the very thing which makes it remarkable—the way it mixes two very different methods of engaging with video games into a whole greater than either could be alone—is almost certainly part of why it isn't.

If I had a nickel for every time that I discovered a new YouTuber that was an animator who makes lots of video game content and binged multiple hours of their stuff only to discover a video of them coming out as aromantic during pride month after scrolling through their video archive, I'd have two nickels. But it's really fucking weird that it happened twice this week.
