note: this would be the age you learnt about CDDs by name & thought "that's me!" (or were diagnosed, if that came first), not the age you first realised you had abnormal symptoms.

hello! fairly new discovered system host here, the body is in their 20s and there's like 10-11 of us. i just wanted to ask, is it normal to have fully realized that... these guys were here this late? like... i knew there was something up since my preteens but they never fully stepped out "from behind the curtain" as we like to call it, only influenced things here and there and acted as what back then thought were imaginary friends. i don't really want to push them again because we have two amnesiacs (they don't remember their first time here before they were dormant, and neither do i, so the two older alters are filling in the gaps for us). we're working on getting properly diagnosed, but for now we just need to figure out if this is. normal /gen
Hey, we’ve answered an ask with a very similar question somewhat recently, but yes, it is very normal and in fact quite common for systems to not discover their plurality or for those with dissociative disorders to not know about their alters until adulthood. Heck, we saw someone on the r/DID subreddit recently who discovered their system at 62 years old! There’s probably a few reasons for this, and no system is exactly the same, but discovering your system “late” (and we think your 20’s is not very late at all) is actually the norm, especially for systems with disorders like DID and OSDD. In fact, it’s more common for folks with dissociative disorders to discover their system in adulthood than childhood, and many experts won’t diagnose a system with a disorder like DID or OSDD until they’re an adult.
Best of luck to you with getting a diagnosis. We hope y’all can continue to learn more about each other and build better connections in the future.

Documenting "Made Up" Headmates
This might seem really obvious to some plurals, but I figured I'd share this anyway in case anyone is a bit slow at making connections like these like I am 😅
I daydream about made up headmates often, and what my/our life might be like if they were in our system. Usually I start with a certain source or role, then imagine what that headmate might look or act like, and sometimes I even pretend to have conversations with them. These daydreams are not super immersive, but they're not just ordinary stray thoughts either
I was reading some articles on Power to the Plurals, and this point on their page for questioning systems gave me an idea
"If you think, read, dream, envision or fantasize a lot that you are Plural or what it would be like, you might want to check if you are actually fantasizing or if these people might actually already exist within you."
Now obviously we know we're plural, but this could also be applied to already discovered systems who are questioning their headcount. This point made me think I should write down the identities of these made up headmates in my daydreams as they may be useful. Again, this might seem obvious, but it clearly took me some time to figure out, so at least one other system out there must find it helpful as well. Documenting won't immediately prove whether or not a headmate is real, but having a list of identities could potentially let a real but not yet discovered headmate see it, and then they can point and go "hey that's me." This would then hopefully lead to them reaching out to us, as they'd then know we're aware of their identity
To make me feel even more silly for only just now realizing I should do this; we already know my imagination plays a part in our communication... 😭 I had a dream about a certain person I never met, and then about 2 weeks later Erin and I discovered Cillian, who was said person in the dream
I hope this helps someone <3

when sof found out she had DID, she used to think she as an alter didn't have a personality. that she was just an empty shell for different alters to use. a hollow host. after she got to front less, she's discovered more about herself. ig being the host during system discovery might be fucking confusing. suddenly you find out that traits you used to ascribe to yourself belonged to "other people". that who you thought you were doesn't exist. that "you" are a collection of dissociated parts with different clashing personalities. it all does make more sense now, but also it feel like your entire identity is a lie. maybe it wasn't a lie, but more of a facade
as system discovery progressed over time, other alters started making their own blogs, pinterest boards, buying things they like, ect. but sof didn't. she didn't know who she was anymore. things happened and she started fronting less. other alters took more of a host role. and as that happened, she suddenly got the time to discover herself again. we would engage with harajuku inspired fashion and she'd notice that it was *her* who was excited about that. she noticed that *she* was the bubbly, outgoing, care-free part. she started making a blog for just herself and a pinterest board too. and the funny part is that she found out that she already knew who she was. she had just forgotten while other parts became more clear to her and each other. these traits have always been a part of her. she re-discovered herself
it's amazing to finally finding yourself again after losing it. the only bad part is that she now wants to have a garfield themed home for some fucking reason, but maybe we can let her have just few a things with the funny orange cat

if you needed some reassurance that it's okay to not discover your system until later in life;
i'm 28 and we've only "known"(some of us know, some of us are still dealing with denial at times) for a couple months.
it's okay to not know; you aren't fake just because you only found out/realised later in life. you are valid no matter when syscovery happens for you 💖.
(no discourse on this post at all, i will smite you)

hi!! i am so sorry if this goes against your boundaries (if it does, you can ignore it) but how did you find out you were an osdd system? /gen
again, really sorry if this is a rude question to ask!!
of course its okay to ask!! im happy to answer :D
i noticed a weird pattern of behavior. my personality changed in sync with my name and pronouns and always happened after "spacing out" (later found out was dissociating). I joked about how I communicate with "myself" to my friend, who is similar in a way, but they said "I know I dont have DID. I dont know about you though". due to genuine concern I asked my friend (a diagnosis DID system) about it and they said I should look into it. I did a shitload of research over the next couple months and took a bunch of tests/quizzes (all of which came out positive). I ended up asking the separate parts in my head for their names, befriending them, and actually becoming conscious of the fact im a system. theres a lot of very obvious things that I cant believe i missed. its crazy i missed the red flags for so long. like, its not normal to have two voices other than your own arguing in your head, causing it to hurt and make it hard to think. but im glad i know now!

YEA I CAN TRY AND DO BOTH DONT WORRY :))
WELL AS FOR HOW WE DISCOVERED OUR SYSTEM ITS COMPLICATED BECAUSE THE HOST WENT DORMANT REALLY YOUNG IE 11 SO WE HAVE KNOWN SINCE 14 AFTER A BUTT TON OF RESEARCH AND RECOGNITION FROM A PROFESSIONAL
AND OUR INNERWORLD IS JUST KINDA A CIRLCE SHAPED ROOM WITH A RED COUCH IN THE MIDDLE AND A BUNCH OF DOORS AROUND THE ROOM AND A LITTLE HALLWAY THAT LEADS INTO A DORM
AND THERE A FEW OTHER PLACES SUCH AS THE ABANDONED STORE, TECHNO CITY, A BEACH AND SOME FOREST THATS REALLY ALL!! THANKS FOR ASKING :)-NEMONA

First post 🥳
First things first, system history and how we view our plurality
we discovered the system about 2 years ago but went back into denial after the chaos that ensued following our syscovery and starting of sysploration. Thanks to finding out about tulpamancy and giving it a try, we very slowly opened back up to the possibility of being a system. We rediscovered our plurality and have since greatly improved our relationship with each other and have started a genuine healing journey for the first time in our life.
We are an adaptive system and prefer not to use the term traumagenic, because we feel like our trauma was not bad enough, but that becoming a system was the only way to live life as a normal and functional person in our environment.
We view our plurality as something positive, something that helped us work around symptoms of all sorts of mental health issues. Something that protects and strengthens us.

System Discovery and Presentation
We/I've been wanting to make more serious in depth posts so here goes one. It's about system discovery mainly.
When we first discovered our system a few years ago we had three irl system friends. One was our partner. Within these systems there were many relationships, as they'd known about their systems for several years. Part of the reason the host of the time (N) discovered us was how excluded we'd become from all these close relationships and the loneliness that triggered.
However after N discovered the system (through some talks from friends and tracking symptoms after a while, may discuss in depth later) we felt a lot of pressure to be more similar to the irl systems we knew. Nothing they did btw, just our own brain.
How this presented itself was by not giving us enough time to process our system, and work out functioning fully. We tried force switches, present alters as attractive options for any form of relationships with the other system and definitely rushed into things, in an effort to "catch up".
We've known about the system for 2 years now. And we're only just beginning to shift away from the mindset we developed in this time of early system discovery. It was very centred around how we appeared and existed externally in social relationships. We neglected working out inner workings, helping alters cope with a variety of things, reducing amnesia and improving communication in favour of focusing on this outer presentation.
Now we're slowly working through that and trying to focus on functionality within the system. Part of this is restarting our simply plural (something I plan to talk about later).
I felt like some people might be able to relate, because in online system spaces especially there seems to be a similar tone in expectations about systems. Most posts I see about simply plural, or system roles, for example, seem to be centred around how it's viewed by external influences. And no hate to these posts, I enjoy them and they're helpful. However it seems to neglect some aspects really important to system good, at least for us.
That's all for now, thank you

Hello anyone following this blog!
We have made some small updates to our blogs name!
Originally, this blog was named “plural egg culture” but I’ve recently decided a name change should be here. Being an “egg” is a term started by the trans community, and despite being trans myself, I don’t feel as though his blog should be using trans terminology.
“Egg” is a term used for trans people who are unaware that they are trans yet, and it’s usually labeled to unknown trans people by other trans people. So why can’t we apply this to systems? Because other systems can’t tell another system they are a system. It’s a covert disorder, it’s harmful to tell people they might be a system. It’s based in trauma, being hidden and staying safe. It’s a safety measure by your brain, being trans is an identity you learn about yourself. You can show signs of both but it’s significantly more damaging to tell someone they might be a system rather then telling someone they might be trans.
Therefore, I have renamed this blog to be “System Predisc. Culture is..” or any other variation that is given to this blog. For anyone sad to see this name go, I’m sorry but I feel as though it’s needed.
If you have any other, more clever ideas for this blog, you can share, and I might rename it to something more catchy then this.
With Love,
The Selfish System

hoo boy this will be a handful but. i'm doing this on anon because i am still in the shame/denial phase. so after befriending some systems (and losing said friendships + accumulated stress + other traumatic/overwhelming circumstances), a few alters (around 9 of them, some very recent, some very old) stepped forward and fully made their presence known?? i dunno know to explain it, my co-host (who i thought was a simple character i made up to "roleplay as") said they've been grouping them to finally come out and actually interact. is it normal to have found out about them this late in my life? (i'm in my early 20s). like, there are gaps, blanks and inexplicable things in my life that, upon talking with them, now know are their doing and it makes sense, things are clicking into place now, but i still feel like i'm faking all of this to cope with the loss of my friends. i don't think i'm traumatized enough, or that i "fit the mold", but i don't want to push them away in case they're real (which i want to believe they are but. we circle back to the issue at hand). i already did my homework and researched a ton (psych major) but getting a proper diagnosis in my country is absurdly costly and difficult, and i have no one to run to so i am just. sitting here and hoping for the best.
Hi! It sounds like you’re going through a lot - we’re sorry things have been so difficult and overwhelming for you lately! We’ll share some advice and link a few posts we’ve made in the past that might be useful for you.
First of all, yes, it is very common and incredibly normal to discover your system later in life. Many folks don’t realize they’re plural until well into adulthood. Our own system had our “official syscovery” when our body was 23 years old! For folks with dissociative disorders, there’s probably a few reasons for this, such as:
- having to live covertly and keep the system a secret while actively in an abusive environment
- being unable to properly handle or deal with the range of emotions that comes with discovering a system
- the system functioning okay with heavy dissociative barriers, without some sort of event or circumstance that causes alters to come in contact with one another
And more! Really it is so common for folks with dissociative disorders to not discover their system until adulthood - most of the other systems we know went through the same thing!
Second of all, it’s also very common for plural folks of all sorts to feel like they’re faking. Unfortunately, whether trauma-formed, created, spontaneous, or anything in between, denial and fear of faking are almost impossible to avoid, especially at first in the early stages of learning about your system. Rather than go over all the different ways you can cope with a fear of faking in this response, we’ll just link our previous post on dealing with denial - please check it out if you can!
In that post linked above, we’d like to highlight points 7 and 8: a syscovery literally can happen at any time, and those who really are faking usually know that they’re faking and as such don’t stress so much about whether or not their system is real. Honestly, these days we’re of the opinion that even if someone is faking plurality, they should still be welcomed to explore their “system” and will still be cherished and accepted in our spaces as long as they want to be here.
Third, it is also incredibly common for trauma survivors to worry that their trauma “wasn’t bad enough” or that they should be perfectly functional because “someone else has had it worse.” Feeling like your trauma wasn’t enough can be a trauma response in and of itself. Many of us in our system also have these same fears from time to time. Even in the unlikely event that your system formed just to help you cope with the loss of your friends, that’s still a valid reason for plurality to occur and you are still welcome to identify as a system.
We appreciate so much that you don’t want to push your headmates away! Focusing on building communication and nurturing positive relationships between y’all can be so helpful and healing. Lots of folks tend to shut down when they first discover their system and push their headmates away as a result. So being open to the experience and willing to work with your headmates is huge! And we’re sure your headmates appreciate this as well.
We cannot diagnose you, and it’s possible that you may or may not have a dissociative disorder like DID or OSDD. It’s possible to be plural without these disorders, even for systems who formed from trauma. But people with dissociative disorders still have these disorders with or without a diagnosis. Lots of people out there are unable to access a mental health professional who is capable of diagnosing them, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the disorders they’re struggling with.
We believe it is possible to self diagnose with enough research. You’ve mentioned you’ve done a lot of research, which is great! If you’re going to attempt to self diagnose, please go slowly, ask yourself questions, and try to rule out other possibilities before settling on a particular diagnosis. Our resource post for questioning systems has a complex dissociative disorder section with lots of resources that you may or may not have seen already, but we’ll go ahead and drop the link!
We’re wishing you and your whole system the very best of luck going forward. Please take your time learning more about yourself and your headmates! Y’all will always be welcome here, no matter what you discover about yourselves in the future. We hope this helps! Sorry it got so long! 😅

CW: weed
Weeeird question but anyone else discover their system through weed?
Disclaimer: I'd had people in my head since 9 years old, and they'd always had a degree of influence/ability to front, but weed opened a lot of doors and made full switches a lot easier
The first time I got high, it was like the Room on my head was much more vivid, and I could feel/see my "characters" much clearer as well. The first time I hit a bong was the first time I watched a "legitimate" switch happen. The first time I'd been pushed out of front entirely. It was what prompted me to actually consider if I might be a system.
It also opened a lot of trauma doors that I was of course unaware of prior to. Enough that I had my first dissociative seizure. So I've stayed away from it for a while. Prioritizing professional help to actually work through some stuff before I can trust it to be fun again.
Just curious about other systems' experience with weed, if any.
