Jin and the video
Or, a plot-line I think the writers may have misjudged.
In the most recent episode, we had Jin confessing to Phee that he posted the video. To most this was validation of what they already believed, to others it was confusing as there have been some contradicting clips that show Jin with a computer that was a different colour, as well as the screen flipping back and forth from night and day mode.
While this debate still continues a bit, particularly since we already knew that Jin probably thinks he must have posted it, I think the renewed reaction has cemented for me my thoughts that I think that this is a plotline the writers misjudged.
See I still - at least at this point, with the caveat that I could be proven wrong as this is horror/thriller - believe that Jin is intended to be a character that people can somewhat empathize with. He's not like Top, Por, or Tee, who are shown to be cruel and dismissive to Non. Though people deny it and talk around it, Jin is the one character that showed empathy to Non, he stood up for him, etc.
But the audience mostly doesn't empathize with Jin at all, and I think this is because the writers miscalculated.
People were already frustrated with his character even before the video incident, but the video really pushed it over the top and now Jin is the most despised character on the show.
However, I'm not sure whether the writers actually anticipated this reaction properly. The way that the show has handled it makes it seem like they haven't, because the video hasn't been touched on all that much, at least not to the extent I might have expected if the intention was 'yes, this is the worst thing done in the show, Jin is the villain who you should all hate and want to die'. We have other characters fitting that bill - Tee's uncle, Top, even Por to some extent.
Yes, the video has been mentioned, but only briefly. It doesn't hold the weight in the discussions about what happened to Non that I would expect it to if I thought the writers felt that this was the worst of the worst in the story they're constructing. (Again, it's possible that something will happen in the next two episodes that will counter this.)
And then there's the fact that people are still questioning whether or not Jin posted the video, given the different colour computers and different colour scheme. Personally I'm inclined to just go with what Jin said at this point, but at this point that's mostly because I feel like it's not going to matter.
I don't want a reveal because it's not going to make a difference. It's not something I have any excitement for, though I originally did, and it's because I know that for most viewers it's not going to land, it's not going to have the intended impact. Reveals usually are supposed to have an effect on the emotion of the audience, to make them view a character a different way, or perhaps empathize with them (or hate them more).
Though I will briefly add that of course it's possible that (if this is included) the writers anticipated this and are thinking more about the impact to the character who would be at fault, which is certainly a possibility. But if they have any intention at all for it to be a change in how the viewer looks at Jin, it's not going to land. Most fans aren't going to care, they aren't going to change their minds.
The only acceptable ending to most at this point is for Jin to die.
So with that in mind I think that the writers made a mistake with this plotline IF their intention is to write Jin as a character the audience could empathize with, because most do not. He's not coming across as grey, he's not coming across as someone people can understand or empathize with.
The act of filming and/or posting the video is, for the audience, making Jin the ultimate villain and if the show gives them anything other than validation of this thought, they are going to be unhappy.
Time will tell.

I told myself I wouldn't write anymore but guess I lied and made an exception for tonight oop-
(no beta so sorry if some grammar's weird. also no leaks please I haven't read any & I'd like for it to stay that way)
I might add a 2nd chapter to fix that mess but when will this happen? will this actually happen?? who knows certainly not me
*****
“And then I had lunch with Nino,” Adrien said. “That was nice. We hadn’t managed to eat together for at least a week.”
Ladybug smiled. “I’m glad. I can’t picture you two being separated for too long.”
“Well, we don’t really have a choice this year. He picked literature, and I picked scientific. We’re not in the same class anymore,” he shrugged with half a smile, before brightening up. “But we still see each other during the breaks!”
Adrien then launched into an explanation of the rules of the latest board game he and Nino had played during the afternoon break. He kept looking into Ladybug’s eyes all the while, delighting in the way they lit up at his enthusiasm, and taking pride in the small chuckles that escaped her lips when he retold a particularly funny joke he’d made.
Ladybug loved hearing about his day. He knew she did because she always asked about it, every day when they reunited, sitting cross-legged face-to-face on the floor. And every day, she nodded along his stories and encouraged him to tell her more.
And Adrien loved telling her about his day. It had taken some time before he allowed himself to fully recount every detail that had happened, having never really been used to talking about himself at all with his father. But unlike his father who would cut him with a stern look or – he later realised – a twist of his ring, Ladybug never seemed tired to hear him talk.
Once he finished telling her about how Tom Dupain had insisted –again– on giving him free chouquettes when he stopped by the bakery, Adrien asked: “And you, my Lady, how was your day?”
She smiled sadly, in a way he was now too familiar with, and his heart dropped.
Of course.
“Oh. Right. You can’t tell me. I forgot.”
Like every single day.
He looked away from her, not wanting to see the pity nor the apology he was sure to find in her eyes. The red kwagatama on his neck suddenly felt too heavy.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and he knew she was. It hurt nonetheless.
“That’s okay,” he whispered back, knowing well that it very much wasn’t. Adrien was scared it never would be.
“You’re allowed to be angry at me, you know,” Ladybug said, not for the first time since he’d started meeting her in secret.
“It’s not your fault. It’s my father’s,” he spat out the word. “And I’m…” he sighed, and with it let all his energy leave his body. “Ladybug, I’m so tired of being angry at people. I can’t… I can’t be angry with you on top of it.”
It wasn’t entirely true. A small part of him was angry with her, but he knew that she was suffering from the consequences just as much if not more than he did. And he truly was exhausted of feeling angry all the time, at his father, at Nathalie, at his mother, everyone who pretended they wanted the best for him but ended up destroying themselves instead; at Félix for keeping him in the dark, at himself for being too stupid to see what had been right under his nose. The list was long enough as it was and didn’t need to include Ladybug, who was a victim of his father's power hunt just as much as he was.
“But you’re allowed to be,” Ladybug said softly.
He felt a tear prickling at the corner of his eye.
“Oh, Adrien” Ladybug breathed, and he hated himself for how sad he’d made her sound. She extended a hand towards him. “I really want to grab your hand.”
He sniffed, and whipped his stray tear away before a stream could run on his cheek. “I really want you to grab my hand, too. And kiss it.” He reached for hers back but stopped millimeters away.
Ladybug smiled shyly, and he could guess the ghost of a blush creeping up her cheeks. “I want you to kiss my hand, Chaton. I always loved when you did it.”
This time, he felt his own cheeks lit up. They got lost in each other’s eyes, hands never quite touching, lulling Adrien further into the illusion that what they were sharing now was real.
But as it always did, reality found a way to crash down on him like the cold in the night right before dawn. Except unlike dawn that promised warmth and light, Adrien’s world stayed cold and dark as his phone rang. He glared at the traitorous device until he saw the name of the caller.
“Who is it?” Ladybug asked.
Adrien smiled bitterly. “Marinette.”
“Oh. Um…” Ladybug wriggled awkwardly. “Are you going to answer her?”
Adrien wasn’t sure he felt strong enough for that. But he had promised her and himself that he’d be there for her, no matter what.
So he took a deep breath, and picked up the phone.
“Hey. What’s up?”
Sniffles greeted him on the other side, and he instantly felt bad for guiltily spending time with Ladybug when he could have been supporting her.
“He made me another strawberry tartlet. Tom– I mean, my dad. He…he told me again how much ‘she’ used to love them. He told me again how ‘she’d’ always steal some from the bakery counter as a kid. He thinks because ‘she’ loved strawberries that I would too.” Marinette let out a sob. “Well, you know what? I don’t love strawberries. I’m tired of strawberry tartlets. They’re fine, but they’re not my favourites, they’re her favourites. And I’m so sick of pretending they are to not hurt him.”
Adrien listened as she caught her breath, feeling at a loss for words.
“I loved my dad’s strawberry tartlets,” Ladybug interrupted sadly. “It reminded me of the picnics we shared on holidays in the countryside when I was a kid. We’d always eat some by the river.”
Adrien nodded in acknowledgement. It made sense that Marinette couldn’t understand what made this pastry so special.
“I’m so sorry, Marinette,” he whispered so quietly he wasn’t sure she heard him.
“Everyone…everyone expects me to be just like her and I keep disappointing them because I can’t satisfy the expectations they have of me,” Marinette choked. “They want me to like sewing, they want me to wear pink… I can’t with pink anymore, all my bedroom walls are pink, everywhere I look there’s pink, it’s too much! I feel like… I feel like I’m suffocating.”
Adrien squeezed his eyes shut, fighting against tears that were threatening to take over him. She sounded so broken. He knew she was, of course he did, but he hadn’t realised how much she’d been holding in all this time. How much she’d been pretending for their sake – and as someone who’d mastered the skill for most of his life, he couldn’t let her suffer from it.
And holding onto her ghost that he wasn’t quite ready to let go just yet wasn’t going to help her. It wasn’t fair to either of them. He knew all too well how to grieve someone he’d lost. But how did he grieve for someone who was still there?
Adrien took a deep breath, trying to get his voice under control. “I’m coming over, okay Marinette ? And then, I’m taking you to the store.”
Ladybug nodded in encouragement.
“And…and you’ll pick whatever colour you like. And I’ll… I’ll help you repaint your room with it, okay? How does that sound?”
Marinette sniffled. “Any colour I want? What if it’s something she hated?”
Adrien’s voice quivered. “What matters is what you want. I think she’d…I think she’d want you to feel good.” Ladybug smiled softly, nodding. “I want you to feel good.”
“Thank you, Adrien,” Marinette whispered. “I really…I really appreciate it. I’ll get ready,” and she hung up.
Adrien stared at his phone silently for a long time, before snapping his gaze back at Ladybug.
“My Lady, I’m so–”
“Don’t,” she lifted a finger that went through his lips. “Don’t apologise. Especially not if it’s to take care of me,” she smiled. “Thank you for that. I really admire you, you know.”
“I really admire you too,” he said quietly.
“You should tell her that,” she replied. “She’d appreciate it.”
“I will,” he vowed.
He didn’t want to leave Ladybug just yet. But he knew it wasn’t reasonable to drag this on, and Plagg or Tikki would be coming back soon anyways. He really didn’t need to go through another lecture of how him meeting Ladybug hurt him more than it did him good, and that Marinette hadn’t given him her kwagatama for that.
Adrien spared one last glance at Ladybug, took a deep breath, and let his eyes flutter shut.
“End of reunion,” he whispered.
When he opened his eyes again, he was alone in the quiet of the room.

This may be specific but I also think it would be kind of cute
Okay so Eyeless Jack x reader who is like pretty intimidating looking and always keeps a stoic expression on and also really tall
Then he gets to know them and it's like "Oh you're not scary, just ✨️traumatised✨️" because they only show emotions to those they trust
Like they will glare at someone who said something mean then be all lovey dovey to Jack but still a little reserved cause they're still new to the whole "wow someone actually loves me"
Could you make 2 versions? One being platonic and the other being romantic (also reader just straight up denying that Jack is insecure cause how could he? He's the definition of perfection in their eyes)
Eyeless Jack x stoic!reader whos sweet to him (?)
i must admit it took me a little while to think of some ideas for this prompt, my apologies for the delay </3 i also wasnt too sure what to title this TToTT but regardless i hope you enjoy this! even through the struggle for ideas, i gotta admit, this idea is adorable esp since i personally write jack to be more self loathing mainly written as platonic but there is a segment at the end for romantic hcs ! easier than to write two separate full fledged sections!
uhuh light CW for implied SH on ejs part since the admin thinks that while jack is slowly descending into his whole.. demon thing hes physically and mentally fighting with himself to remain lucid; nothing explicitly written but id rather be safe than sorry
Tumblr media
honestly i think it might take him a good hot minute to really let you treat him like hes deserving of anything more than a scowl, especially if he sees how you act around other people... because why him, of all people? there are people better for you
yet he doesnt stop you from coming to his cabin in the woods, he doesnt stop you from doing some work around the place so its safer and more habitable for him, he doesnt stop you from patching up his clothing and washing them. why doesnt he stop you? he knows he doesnt deserve it...
he almost hates the way you look at him sometimes, if you look at him with pity. like hes some lost dog needing someone to take care of him
he doesnt need help, hes been doing this whole thing by himself for a long time now and he hasnt needed anyone
and yet
he doesnt push you away when you go in to clean his face after a particularly nasty fight with himself
you even run a warm bath for him
its been so long since hes been warm
i like to think that he tries to seek you out when you dont come to visit him for a few days.. did something happen to you? were you hurt? sick? did someone do something to you? did you move away? where did you go...?
wont ever admit it but i think hes at least a little starved for a connection, sure hes a hermit and he was already closed off before he started turning into this man eating monster, but deep down he still has his human roots in there kicking, and humans thrive on connections... in the truest sense, he needs you. not sexually or carnally or romantically, he just needs someone to talk to him to keep him from going truly mad
finds himself thinking about you more than hed like to admit, even if he doesnt have any romantic feelings for you hes going to beat himself up. he came here to his silly little cabin in the woods to get away from people for everyones sake; only coming out when he needs to 'hunt'
its like befriending a stray cat, i think. they hiss and swipe at first but overtime they try to cuddle up to you if you give them enough time to build up that trust
admin likes to think he has pointed ears, and i think that they would twitch a little if he sees a smile forming on your face...
as for romantics....
i think he would look at where you walked off to, to go home... longing, almost daring himself to go after you or say something because he cant stand spending another night alone in the woods
leaves you gifts, anonymously, but leaving them none the less. if you ask if he was the one who left them hes not going to admit it, you can imply that you know it was him, but he will hold firm in his denial
building off of the ear idea, he totally gives himself away when he starts blushing... he looks like the type to have his blush reach his ears... not too mention the flicks dont make it any less discrete,,,
even he doesnt notice it, but he tries to make excuses for you to stay around longer during hang out sessions, stopping just short of offering to watch the grass grow
i think this would feed into his self loathing, though. in my eyes, jack was dragged into a human sacrifice unwillingly and unknowingly. his life was robbed away from him, he was robbed of ever having a normal life with you... you deserve better, he thinks. very heavy shit, you know? i think it leads to his mental state being even worse than before
god i had intentions of going into this with fluff but this just came out angstier than my middle school ocs TToTT

"I know why the fandom do it but I REALLY dislike to see these goddamn stitches on Kaori's head whenever she's represented in fanart. I know, it's Kenjaku! I know we never saw her without these stitches! I knoooow BUT I HATE IT she's Yuuji's mother and like what happened to her?! Was she pregnant with Yuuji before Kenjaku possess her body?! How did she get along with Jin? Is Kenjaku directly responsible to Jin being dead? And how Kenjaku found her? "
So what do you think about the post above? Do you think the og Kaori have CT all along? And, that Yuuji's personality is from Kaori not Jin?
I can understand the frustration to an extend. I rarely see it, but when Kaori is shown with stitches or Kenjaku without them it does rub me the wrong way. Kind of similar to people who tag posts who are solely about Kenjaku with "Geto", despite him having nothing to do with it.I can kind of understand it with fanart for a wider reach, but it unfortunately also means I can't block the Geto tag because that means I would miss out on over half of the posts in the Kenjaku tag (the anime caught up, why do people still call Kenjaku "Geto").
But at least one question of that post is easy to answer: Kaori wasn't pregnant with Yuuji before Kenjaku took over her body. Wasuke very clearly differentiates between Kaori and Kenjaku and he said Kaori couldn't get pregnant, that was only possible once Kenjaku took over.
Kaori always had a cursed technique, but it is unclear if she awakened it or if it was just lying dormant in her brain. Could go either way really, but the way Kenjaku worded it, it sounds more like she might have been able to use it, although I doubt she was an active sorcerer either way. I also think it would be more interesting and make her less of a passive participant who only got used for the dormant physical aspects of her body both by Kenjaku and Jin. I would like her to have had a little bit more agency and interesting background.
If Yuuji got some core personality traits from Kaori is impossible to say, since we know literally nothing about her as a person. Could be anyone's guess at this point. Yuuji got the humanity kanji 仁 from his father, but I don't think they have much in common personality-wise based on what we have seen of Jin so far. He is polite, sure, but he hasn't really shown that unconditional compassion Yuuji will give to people. He doesn't even seem like a particularly cheerful person. He was happy to have a child, but was ready to overlook over people's suffering in favour of his selfish goals. With how insistently Wasuke warned him and Kenjaku's bad acting skills I find it very unlikely that he didn't notice that something was wrong with "Kaori", but he went through with it anyway. He's also very cold to his father and we don't know how he acted around Kenjaku. I guess Yuuji is similar to him in that he also is distant towards his parent and family members, except for him Wasuke is the exception not the rule.
That also makes him quite similar to Kenjaku, who has shown trouble connecting with family members as well or people in general. They both have a very open and at times cheerful attitude towards others on the surface, but rarely allow themselves to make deep bonds with these people and over the course of their life have grown very hesitant (Kenjaku obviously moreso than Yuuji). The bonds they do form make them "weak", especially in the eyes of Sukuna and jujutsu society as a whole. They are both ready to sacrifice themselves and their body for the sake of a greater goal that is closely connected to a person they care about. Also they have a similar sense of humour. So I guess out of all his parents Yuuji is the most similar to Kenjaku in terms of core personality. I'd say he got Wasuke's stubbornness as well.
Also, another personal pet peeve related to Kaori is when people say Kenjaku calling Yuuji their son are subliminal feelings from Kaori coming through. That argument is already weak when people try it with Geto, but it makes even less sense with Kaori. She never met Yuuji, she might have never wanted to be pregnant for all we know and Yuuji was born at least a year after she was already dead. Where would those feelings come from? Not to mention that Kenjaku is very aware of their vessel (so far only Geto) influencing them and can differentiate between their own feelings and the ones coming from someone else. Not to mention that considering how Kenjaku treats the Death Paintings, suddenly developing parental feelings would definitely be something that would immediately trip Kenjaku up if it was coming from someone else.

Ooh, please tell me more about how Shiall today might relate to Larry? I’ve been keeping an eye on Niall, and I have so many thoughts, but I’m mostly just confused!
heya anon, and welcome to the show!
now, I want to start this off by saying I haven’t had much to do with the Shiall stuff, so I’m not an expert on it. But, here are a couple of my thoughts as to why this is an interesting turn of events, and what this means for larry.
so, it’s been pretty interesting seeing all the Shiall stuff online since the show happened. And well… I’ve seen a lot of larries/ziams also now start shipping Shiall, which is interesting, and while Shiall has never been as big as Larry or even Ziam, it blew up the fandom and even got headlines in the press. So… let’s have a deeper dive.
Now… people have believed in Shiall or at least entertained the idea of them together since at least 2017. It’s not a new thing whatsoever. But since the show of them performing together, it has become pretty huge. And there are a lot of solos reaaaaallllyyyy hating that, and it’s becoming a bit beefy between the niall girls and the shiall believers (which is yikes because can everyone just be nice to each other for a god damn second Jesus Christ) so it’s now dividing nialls otherwise pretty chill fandom. Which is new for him, and will be interesting to see how it’s handled. But so far in the press? It’s going well for him.
He’s gotten a write up in a few outlets which all have a similar headline of “Niall Horan Surprises Fans by Bringing Out Shawn Mendes at London Concert” (US Weekly). But, Rolling Stone really went all out here:
Tumblr media
Now, I dunno about you… but adding “fellow lover boy” and “that’s my boy” to a headline 100% grabs attention and maybe implies a bit more than just pals. In my marketing and journalism experience/study, this would absolutely fall under seeding and somewhat subconsciously sways the reader into further curiosity about Niall and Shawn’s relationship.
What’s funny about this, is 1 week prior to the show, Elle posted this article out of quite literally nowhere. Shawn and Camila haven’t been spotted together since (to my knowledge) April of 2023 when they were photographed kissing at Coachella. So… why was this dropped a week prior?
Tumblr media
Anyway, Niall is still signed to Modest mgmt, who we’ve watched control narratives and PR ops for the last 13 years. So, it’s safe to say we can see a bit of a pattern here, but it feels different this time too… right?
Niall’s mgmt would 110% know about the Shiall rumours. They’ve been around for over 6 years, and have continued to grow in popularity over the past couple of years particularly. It’s very obviously a topic that the fandom talk about, and that a lot believe in. So, to allow niall to bring on stage someone who his fans believe he’s actually dating as opposed to his “gf” who was also in the crowd that night (not that literally anyone cared lol) feels very freeing. Do modest and Niall not care about the rumours? Is it actually true and he managed to convince his team to let him do it in exchange of staying with his gf for longer? Or is it something entirely different?
Well… it’s a tricky one.
Modest have been well known to closet artists for years. We’ve seen it with larry, and other young men too. So, why the change of heart? Essentially encouraging rumours by giving this the go ahead, and rolling stone weirdly quickly posting that article with those particular words in the headline, why now?
It’s good PR, sure. It’s beneficial for Shawn to get back into the headlines more after not performing for 12 months, and gives nialls tour a bit of a boost. But i would argue that it’s encouraging Shiall. And I would also argue that modest have actively tried to squash gay rumours for years with larry (we will talk about the Union J shit show another time and just stick with larry for this) so it’s interesting that they’re encouraging it. But it’s been a pretty nice little test drive for larry, hasnt it?
In no way has Shiall divided the fandom to the same point as Larry, but the love we all saw for shiall (whether we believed in them being romantically linked or not, it was incredibly wholesome) from around the fandom was very loud. I saw a hell of a lot more positive chats than negative (and I looked deeper than just my timeline) and so it was pretty safe to say that it went well for the most part.
People are saying that niall might have done it behind his team’s back because Shawn was placed in Paris hours earlier, but that’s just a reminder of something we already know that we can’t trust photos to be released on the same day at the same time they are taken, but I think he’d get in a hell of a lot of trouble for that. So I’m not on board with that idea.
So I guess to put it down to a couple of options to sum this up:
a) modest has flipped the script and is okay with Shiall because they’re actually not dating (unlike how they handled larry because they were) and it’s all just rumours and niall and his gf aren’t bothered from it so it’s fine because it’s some good publicity
b) niall and Shawn actually are dating and his team is seeding a coming out, testing the waters with the fandom, perhaps try to encourage larry to sign with them again due to how “free thinking” they are now
c) nialls contract allows him to have more control over different aspects of his career so he was able to just invite him up there no matter what narrative is being pushed in his personal life
So… what’s this mean for larry and why have I rambled on for 3-5 business days?
Well…
Niall is dealing with the same rumours with Shawn as H and L do with each other. He is actively showing the fans that believing in a relationship between two dudes in fact doesn’t ruin their lives and families and their girlfriends are crying all the time, and he’s also showing other mgmt teams that you can do this shit without the world falling to pieces (aka the V*nes and Az*ff losers) whether or not it’s true. It’s a very small step in the right direction, but it’s a really good one. So I think yeah it’s important to see what this means for Larry and their next steps, because niall has made it look pretty simple. But I think we should keep watching this all very closely.

Headcanon that Magolor was adopted by Hyness and raised among the mage sisters, and that's how he’s familiar with the Ancients and how he can use magic...
Using this as a springboard to just ramble about this so. Here we go
-So I knowwwww DX says that Magolor isn’t actually from Halcandra... but that undoes a ton of my headcanons so I’m just saying he literally just isn’t from Halcandra nor was he raised there. Instead, he’s a direct descendant of the Ancients.
-I’m not totally sure on what happened to his parents, but I’m thinking they perished in Another Dimension, leaving him behind to be found by the Jambastion.
-Hyness is very much a man who runs on spite first and logic second. He harbors intense hatred for the Ancients and anyone like them, despite his clan originally being a part of the Ancients. He felt tempted to leave the child behind and let the Ancients die out even more... but he got it in his head that he could “fix” this descendant by raising him under the Jambandra religion. Give a sense of twisted “redemption” to the Ancients through this last child.
-Still figuring the dynamics out but spoiler alert none of this goes well LMAO. Hyness of course is doing this out of spite and doesn’t particularly care about this child, and he’s certainly not kind to him. He’s not much of a father figure. Magolor was very much the least favorite scapegoat child who was shamed for where he came from and treated like he had to redeem himself for what his ancestors did. He taught Magolor magic and the ways of his religion. The magic stuck with Magolor a lot. The religion did not.
-While Hyness tried to poison the Ancients to Magolor, it only really worked when he was a young child. For a good amount of his life, he felt guilty and like he was an inherently bad person for being a descendant of the people who had harmed his “friends”. But as he kept getting treated like a punching bag for where he came from, he started to yearn for where he came from. He wanted to connect to the Ancients, he wanted to find their lost relics and technology, he wanted to create technology. He wanted to build things... He wanted the limitless power the Ancients had. He clung onto their image and idolized them, wishing so bad to be his ancestors.
-This is what gets him exiled in the end as he rejects and mocks Jambandra and Void Termina, which causes Hyness to accept him as a failure. He never meets any of the Jambandrans again til Star Allies.
-Being raised in an abusive cult sure does wonders for Magolor’s personality. Particularly when he was raised by Hyness who (at that point) was more concerned with how he could use his “friends”, not caring he harmed them in the process. Magolor’s tendency to lie and use people mostly came from him following Hyness’s example. It also... sort of might be where his desire for power and control came from, and what made him extra vulnerable to the Master Crown’s control? Not sure though. Magolor’s actions are all his own and this wouldn’t be to excuse him, but to explain him.
-I’m not sure if he’d be close to the sisters considering how lonely he was before RTDL but he might actually be friends or have had some good relationship with Zan? She’s the closest to Hyness but is treated like garbage and gets the brunt of his abuse since she protects him from her sisters, but she can’t really protect Magolor when Hyness hates the Ancients just that much. They were both treated terribly and might bond a little through that? But ultimately Zan’s blind devotion and apologism for Hyness and his bitterness towards the religion drives them apart.
-After the events of RTDL, Magolor does improve a lot as a person. He unlearns a lot of the toxic tendencies he inherited from Hyness (though he stays a cheeky fuckhead) and I do imagine he grows a lot closer to the sisters as they all realize they were victims, and they grow to become better people together.
None of this is set in stone and is exclusively just headcanons. I sorta want to draw him with the sisters next if I can learn how to draw them already...

Look here’s part of my interpretation of Krisnix
Particularly Phoenix’s feelings towards towards him
My headcanon is the timeline goes a bit like this
Year 1: I don’t know how I got disbarred but Kris is the only one who believes in me so I like him, I’m gonna cling to them for support
Year 2: Ok Kris is looking kind of sus but I’m just gonna ignore that since Edgeworth still hasn’t had time to visit me. Sure there’s something else I’m missing
Year 3: Ok the signs are pointing to Kris but if I just zeno my thinking some other factors/excuses will materialize
Year 4: ok no all the signs are saying he did it out of spite but if I just huff enough copium the facts will change and the only person who’s been able to support me in person and not through time zone screwed phone calls and e-mails won’t be the one who ruined my life
Year 5: Ok so the facts haven’t changed and he’s an asshole but I’ll fix him like I fixed Edgeworth. He says he cares about me so it must be true (after all wanting something to be true really badly makes it true right?) I’ll fix him!
Year 6-7: ok being around him is very weird and I’m upset he disbarred me but I need to figure out what his tragic background is so I can fix him, then I can reform the court system and he can be like Edgeworth except he doesn’t leave me for Europe 😤
*Kris commits murder*
Phoenix: … so I guess I can’t fix him :/
I genuinely think for a least a while Nick had to have some kind of fix it mindset with him
I mean Edgybaby was said to have forged evidence and Nick didn’t really care. I really think murder was the final nail in the coffin
Thoughts? Is this a valid timeline? I know some people like it where Nick realizes what happened immediately and just hated Kris internally all 7 years but to me that’s boring
I have even more complicated thought of Kris’ thoughts of Nick so look out
this is so real and also mostly how i see phoenix' s thoight process tbh!! especially the years of ignoring red flags only to then try and "fix him", he'll drag out the denial as long as possible. besides hes dealt w corrupt guys before, he was willing to give edgeworth for a lot, and its very possible he didnt know kristoph was capable of murder until turnabout trump.
and fuck how DEVASTATING must that be? to spend years knowing someone intimately and being willing to overlook all of the signs because the support and companionship they offer is more reliable and consistent than anything youve had before? only to end up feeling like you dont know them at all (might be working on a little drawing about that atm actually 👁👁 work is hell tho and slowing me down so much)

Build me your perfect casting for a new movie about our sassy little twink Scarecrow (we really need one) Any characters, any actors.
Tumblr media
Let's start with our sweet boy Jonathan: I don't think I can (and I certainly don't want to) accept anyone other than Mr. Murphy for this role. If he was great in The Dark Knight trilogy, he'd probably be even better now: more age appropriate, less boyish, but just as attractive AND creepy, because for me those are the two main traits any live action adaptation of Scarecrow needs. This time I'd probably make his hair dark auburn at least.
Tumblr media
I also need more movies where he wears glasses
Now, given that this is practically impossible, there are a couple of more realistic options I wouldn't be so mad about:
Bill Skarsgård
Tumblr media
This is a very self-indulgent pick. I find him attractive, he looks good with glasses, and he knows how to be scary. Is he the best actor for the role? I don't know. Is he hot enough for me to overlook that and enjoy a very slutty and sexy Scarecrow again? Yes.
Caleb Landry Jones
Tumblr media
He would be my first choice if I actually answered with my brain. He can look very creepy and messed up (as he did in Antiviral), but he still has that cute boy aura about him. Extra points for being a redhead because I'm a Year One bitch.
Michael Pitt
Tumblr media
What can I say? I like him in villainesque roles and he makes a great psychopath. I wasn't particularly fond of the way he portrayed Mason in Hannibal, but if he went the Funny Games route, we could have a very good Scarecrow.
Young Christopher Walken
Tumblr media
I can almost hear "call the police" here. If I had a time machine he'd be higher up in the list.
For our angsty playboy Bruce:
Robert Pattinson
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if this is a popular or unpopular opinion at this point, but he might be my favorite Bruce. I like the emo take and I genuinely enjoy his acting. I couldn't understand the backlash when he was announced as the next Batman, but I was introduced to his work by Cronenberg's Cosmopolis (I was never a Twilight girl, no hate to those who like the franchise), and I've also seen how capable he is in other indie movies, so I knew he would deliver.
I also adored Christian Bale's Bruce, and I'm a bigger fan of TDK than The Batman, but Battinson has a special place in my heart.
Now let's think about the movie. I never spent too much time pondering on what my ideal Scarecrow movie would look like because we all know people just want yet another Joker movie and the chances of this happening are close to zero, but there are two things I would like to see:
His background story. We all know that, no matter the universe, he always gets tormented beyond what any human could -or should be able to- stand. I feed on trauma and seeing my favorite characters mentally and physically destroyed, so this is a must. If you ask me, I favor the great-granny option because it's crueler and makes for a more interesting character.
The parallelisms between him and Batman. This may be one of the most interesting points raised by Year One. I want them to be portrayed almost as mirror images. Their actions are fueled by childhood trauma, their motivations are driven by fear, but they end up fulfilling radically opposite yet complementary roles... I want this to explore the nature vs. nurture debate on what makes someone's psyche develop in a specific way, and I want it to be dark and twisted. Give me an even darker Bruce.
As for what other characters I'd like to see here, without a plot in mind, I can't really go deeper, but some options would be:
Great granny Keeny: because in my mind she's the main catalyst of his villain downward spiral. I want her to be somewhat attractive and comic book accurate (let's face it, she's FINE), but I have no one in mind. I picture her as an older version of either Bedelia Du Maurier from Hannibal or Ethel Cripps from The Sandman... Maybe an artificially aged Gillian Anderson would do the trick.
Linda Friitawa (Fright): a very underrated and ignored character that I'd like to see a live action adaptation of. Again, I never fully developed a plot in my mind, so I don't know if there would be a possibility to fit her anywhere and I also wouldn't want to take away from the homoerotic undertones of Scarecrow and Batman's love/hate relationship, because that's essential for me and my very self-indulgent, half-baked idea of a Scarecrow movie. Anya Taylor-Joy would be perfect here.
Tumblr media
...and that's it for now. Although I'll probably regret not mentioning Nygma (not Nashton) and a few others as soon as I hit "post"! ♡ Thanks for your ask @ninja-potato-shelby-solomons ♡

Do you happen to have Covid or just normal ick? What if Little Peter got a tummy ache (likely from the three pudding cup he snuck after dinner) and thinks he has Covid but Daddies have to explain that noo, he doesn’t have a cold, he just ate what he shouldn’t have
im not sick with covid luckily bUt whatever it is is still kicking my ass🤒🤒 im still coughing like 17 days later sksks
Daddies Stephen and Tony, +18 Little Peter, sneaking treats, tummy upsets, emotional fluff and comfort
Tumblr media
Stupid Daddies for making curry with lamb. Peter hates lamb! It tastes bitter and makes Peter cringe after every bite. If only they had made curry with chicken, like they usually do, then this would have never happened.
Peter’s totally not at fault for his tummy ache by sneaking three pudding cups after dinner. Totally not. He doesn’t feel sick to his stomach either. Nope, totally not.
Maybe.
Peter turns restlessly on his bed. Only ten minutes after his third and last cup of pudding, he had started feeling nauseous. Now his tummy is rolling and making yucky noises. It is like there is a party in Peter’s tummy, but it’s a bad party with bad people.
Peter had gotten into bed to try and feel better, but it is not helping. He might just have to admit defeat and go to Daddies for help. The boy debates on it for a while in his mind while his heart races in his chest, but when a particularly yucky wave of nausea hits him, he makes his choice quickly.
“Dad-dyyyyyy!”
Stephen arrives quickly, having picked up on the tone in Peter’s voice. The doctor pushes the door open and heads to Peter who’s still in bed, whimpering and kicking his legs in frustration.
“Hey, you okay?”
“Feel ick, Da…”
“What kind of ick?” Stephen asks, sitting by Peter’s bedside and stroking back his hair to feel his forehead. No fever, at least.
“Tummy ick. Is- is like a bad party. It’s making weird noises.” Peter explains. And it’s quite an accurate description because just then Peter’s tummy rolls and gurgles softly.
“Okay, sit up for me, honey.” Stephen says, helping Peter to recline back in bed with some pillows. “You’ll be okay- but, what’s this?” He asks, suddenly noticing the brown dot on the corner of Peter’s mouth. It looks like chocolate. “Peter, did you take any treats?”
Peter flushes a dark red at that question. At first, his eyes go wide, then he lowers his gaze to his lap where he fidgets with his hands.
“Peter, what did you take?”
“Jus’ some puddin’…”
“Just some? And not- like three cups?” Stephen asks, lifting up Peter’s duvet a little to reveal three empty pudding cups and a spoon. He had heard the plastic when he sat down on the bed.
Peter whimpers and squirms on the bed, his tummy rolling again. Normally, Stephen would put Peter in time out, or have them discuss this situation further. But, it seems that the tummy trouble is punishment enough in itself. Peter looks quite guilty and miserable.
“Okay, I get you’re upset, Petey. I’ll get you some milk and some bread to settle your tummy.” Stephen coos, lifting Peter up into his arms.
“Nooo, tummy doesn’t want food.” Peter whines.
“Do you feel sick? Like you’re gonna throw up?” Stephen asks, but Peter shakes his head no. “Your tummy needs some proper food with fiber to settle, trust me.”
“Am not sick? I could have a popsicle.” Peter says sheepishly, drawing some random pattern on his Daddy’s shoulder with his fingertip.
“You’re not that kind of sick, baby.” Stephen chuckles.
“Not even Covid?” Peter asks.
“Definitely not that.”
With Peter in his arms, Stephen heads to the kitchen to prepare the boy a tummy-settling snack. Then, he brings the boy to the sofa to eat and sits with him to make sure he doesn’t get sick all over the floor.
After just a few sips of cold milk, Peter feels a little better. Tony shows up then, having done some chores around the house and missed Peter’s little episode. But, Stephen fills him in quickly. Just like Stephen, Tony also gives Peter a disappointed look for stealing treats.
“Sorry, Dada…”
“You’re forgiven, baby. I’m just glad you’re feeling bettee now.” Tony says, leaning over to give Peter’s cheek a kiss.
“But, can’t people get Covid from pudding? How can you be sure?” Peter asks, making Stephen chuckle.
“Eat your bread, baby.” Tony says fondly.
Peter does as he is told and nibbles on his slice of rye bread while deep in thought about whether one can catch Covid from a chocolate pudding. Even Daddies can be wrong, although it happens very, very rarely.

What’s everyone’s problem with Alex’s girlfriend?
Well, first of all, I don't think everyone has a problem with his girlfriend, judging by quite a few people (mostly on IG) who seem to like her. Plus, I can't speak for everyone, but at least in my opinion, she's done some things that can be considered problematic, for example:
Constantly "hinting" on IG stories about her and Alex being a couple, even when he was very much trying to keep it private, like when they went to Paris and she had to show that she was with him at the Vikings Con, or when she was at his apartment and also had to show it.
Speaking about the Paris trip, she had a whole (public) Pinterest board called "Paris outfits" (or something like this), showing she'd given this trip a lot of thought, calculating even which clothes she should wear.
And while we're at the Pinterest topic, let's not forget that in one of those boards she had saved a painting from an artist she later copied and tried to pass it as her own creation. And when someone called her out for it, instead of doing the right thing, which would be to admit her mistake and give credits to the artist, she just deleted both the comments and the picture, pretending like nothing ever happened. (As an artist myself, I found this behavior particularly unacceptable.)
She also loves the "post and delete" game, having once shared a video of her and Alex at some sort of party/gathering with friends, in which he was clearly drunk and she kept staring at the camera with a somewhat triumphant expression, as if exhibiting some kind of trophy. Of course this video was quickly deleted, but not before some fan pages saved and reposted it for everyone to see. And although I'm not sure if Alex wanted to be seen at such private moments with friends, she clearly had no problem with it or with the possible damage to his reputation he so carefully curates.
Last but not least, shortly after their trip to Portugal she shared a few (not so flattering) pictures of Alex during said trip, with the description "If you snooze, you lose". Again, these pictures were quickly deleted, but not before some fan pages got hold of them, which was possibly her objective. To some people, it just felt like she was trolling his fans, or maybe trying to gain a few more followers, making them think she'd "reward" them some Alex content if they followed her and were quick enough.
I'm sure there might be a few more things to add to this already long list, but I just wrote the ones I personally witnessed. And before anyone classifies this as "spreading hate", I just listed some facts — things that really happened and can be proved. You do with them what you want, and if you still choose to like and support her, you're free to do so. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

would izaya be the type to leave his friends, or the people he works with, unconscious? like, if they suddenly passed out, would he ignore it and walk away? somebody made a joke abt that and it got me thinking. he does kind of sound like that type LOL
How mean! ..... That said, he might just do so tbh. So here goes answering this way more seriously than is probably neccesairy!
It really depends on who, and under what circumstances. Izaya hates relying on people; even shinra, so I'm very sure he has basic medical knowledge. He'd know how to check a pulse, and what position to lay somebody in and such. So.... When it comes to his friends.... Well there's not many so I'll just go over them.
Shinra- If he's in a save place, like his house or something, he'd check him over and attempt to wake him up. Probably by kicking him or tipping a glass of water. If that doesn't work he'd probably just message celty and leave. - If it's unsafe, like outdoors, he'd do the same, but he'd actually call Celty and explain the situation, and then wait for her to arrive. If he can't reach or for some reason can't count on her, he'd probably call an actual ambulance? He wouldn't stick around for it to arrive in that case though.
Namie - There's no way he'd leave her. He'd carry her home or take a taxi/ car directly to shinra. At least in the later books, in the early ones their bond is still fragile so he really might just walk away to avoid the trouble.
Shizuo - Not exactly a friend but some reason Izaya keeps mentioning him whenever friendships are talked about so I'll just include him. Shizuo doesn't even get a check up. He just gets jumped on and laughed at. If Izaya is in a particularly vicious mood he might even stab him a couple of times and allert the various gangs of an easy target before leaving.
The twins - Family counts right? If that happens Izaya is probably spending half of his brain trying to supress the panic and the other half is busy figuring out wether it's faster to go to shinra or the hospital and if either is worth the risk.
Kine and Mikage he'd probably call an emergency contact for, but wouldn't be overly concerned otherwise. After all, they're tough. The caring role or more theirs than his.
Manami... I honestly don't know. I don't think he'd risk her dying for no reason because he wants to see what more she's going to do next with the life she originally wanted to give up. I don't think he particularly cares for her, but I think he'd still call somebody else to take her to a safe place.
The rest of the poeple he works with I really don't think he gives a shit about. Any dragon zombie members, the russians, Izumii, Haruna- They'd be left behind and the only thought spend would be on how to change his plans. If it happened to an Awakusu member I think Izaya would be preoccupied with proving that it wasn't somehow his fault, so there's no space for caring there.
As you may notice in almost all conceivable cases... He's not likely to stick around even if he does care.

Are you still doing requests for the splatbands ask game? If so, can we get 6 with Omega-3’s DJ? I love them so much 😭
Yep, and I’m always willing to talk about splatoon ^_^
And you have just opened Pandora’s box btw
6: headcanons for ω-3’s DJ
They/them maybe they/he. Like 18-21 in Splat2 and mid twenties at most by 3.
A Goldie. At least, genetically so. They have the intelligence and perhaps the longer life as well, but the looks are… off. Their scales don’t grow in right and they’re not as shiny. More of a dull metallic olive at the very least. They’re a lil self conscious abt it…
Pretty smart with tech and also has some street smarts. Struggled academically though.
Some of their rudeness is just from being too chummy and lax with people way too early on but they’re also just very disagreeable. Contrarian for the sake of it. Likes arguing and annoying people. The respect they hold for others is low- and even those they do respect in their mind sure as hell aren’t treated with it.
Doesn’t totally hate the other two, they do appreciate their presence and talent (+ vice versa) but they’re just… idk this is just how they are. They want things their way they think they can get away with being a total dick. But the other two can also be unbearable so it’s all back and forth and depends on the day and situation
Gets along better with the drummer bc they’re closer in age + the drummer isn’t nearly as stubborn or critical or bitchy as a certain cellist playing fish is… the two might live together too. Cellist lives on his own though maybe.
The cellist is their favorite person to fuck with. They always get on his nerves and they see anything he tells them not to do or whatever as a challenge. They generally dislike his state of authority in the band as they think he’s a bit too restrictive (though he does give them some leeway) and judgy, so they’ll take any chance to knock him down a peg.
And the Cellist gets frustrated that they rarely seem to take things seriously and their general attitude and whatnot.
Party animal. Pretty good and hyping up a crowd and keeping them that way.
Impulsive, makes a lot of bad decisions they end up regretting in both mundane and very serious situations. It’s only when consequences hit them that they start to feel bad but they can’t really stop. Don’t know how, don’t know if they even want to try. But they are more than a little self aware of the fact it’s becoming an issue.
Energetic but carries themself with a sort of unbothered, too-cool-for-school vibe. They try to be chill but they do get excited quite easily. They’re confrontational but try to never seem upset even when words or actions cut deep. If all that even makes sense.
Rough childhood in rough area. Shitty parents and an ok ish older sister. Music got them through the worst of it though their mother was very unsupportive of their goals. Soo they eventually just left, got enough money to start off with some odd jobs here and there and later gained financial stability through the band and perhaps some other things. I assume Goldies get some privileges esp regarding trade and finances bc they’re valuable members of society by default.
Their relationship with their sister is rough. A little distant and they argue a lot.
Familiar with Dedf1sh and her music. Doesn’t know her personally and is unaware of her fate but knows what many others do: that she was a talented musician who disappeared without a trace. They really want to know what happened to her.
The whole Grizzco situation is actually rlly fucking them up. they’re terrified. Worried sick abt the future but trying to appear OK abt it. But their anxiety and despair over it is strong and they can’t hold it together for much longer
But they do like laughing at particularly stupid Grizzco workers and runs that end in disaster for ‘em.
ALSO. My hc nickname for them is L.S./Ellis. Bc. Loyal Servant > L.S. > Ellis. Idk if or how the titles will be localized but until then this is what I’ve been calling em mentally.

speaking of Quinn and religion, one thing that's always baffled me is that I do think S1 wants to set up the black comedy of the "Queen of the Chastity Ball" getting knocked up, and it's supposed to be a whole commentary on celibacy, religious hypocrisy, etc. But I've never fully understood why they didn't truly lean into that? Because what the rest of Quinn's arc through S3 shows us is that honestly she's NOT a hypocrite about this. She believed in waiting. She was sincere in her faith. Her big slip-up was super dubious and a one time thing. For how much we've been told we were meant to hate Quinn in S1, I wonder why RIB didn't have her sleeping with the entire football team except Finn, having her play the nice girl around her parents then being knowingly cynical about using her religion as a disguise. It would still even work to contrast her with Santana, one being unapologetically sexual, the other hanging onto her pristine rep while doing the exact same things privately. It would've been such an easy way to make sure the audience sees her as the villain and tbh, might have better fit the dark humor of S1. That they didn't go that path is more proof to me that RM was ALWAYS writing Quinn as an empathetic character, even if he wasn't aware of it.
Alright alright, not gonna put off answering this because it's an amazing topic I wanna keep discussing or as long as y'all have thoughts.
Completely agree, they never lean into it. Not nearly as much as this ostensibly satire show should have. I often think about that, the deliberate irony of framing Quinn as ultra-religious and having her be the president of a damn Celibacy Club just to have her get knocked up. After having sex once, too. A better show would have a) leaned in and b) examined how society treats those who cross the madonna-whore threshold. Even in terms of the cheerleading stereotypes that the Unholy Trinity all check, it's ultimately Quinn who gets portrayed as a whore because she's the one with "evidence" that she's had sex. Brittana are much, much more promiscuous, yeah, but there's something about teen pregnancy as the ultimate symbol of sexual transgression. But, like you say, Quinn wasn't actually a hypocrite about all this.
I think she was also scarred from the pregnancy emotionally, understandably, but the only times she uses her sexuality after this in high school are when she's clearly unhinged. I.e. trying to make another baby with Puck. She wants to take things slow with Sam, completely understands Joe's perspective, and I for one seriously doubt Fuinn ever actually had sex. All that happened with Beth's conception was Puck taking advantage of her. But Glee season 1 just,,, does not get this. They so badly want Quinn to be this hypocritical bitch who cheats on her boyfriend and gets knocked up and isn't all that virginal after all. But even if we didn't see the actual scene, and oh boy do we, that narrative would still be dubious. Simply put, Quinn isn't the character Glee thinks they're writing.
I've said this so many times in so many ways but the bottom line remains the same. The writers did not know what kind of character they were writing. And there's a lot to be said about how RM reacted to that, goddammit I still haven't talked about that Rolling Stone interview, but at the end of the day we just have these facts within the show itself. And this is how I try to explain my frustrations with season 1 to people. Later seasons Quinn is a whole convo, too, but s1 always feels particularly insidious to me.
In terms of how you would have written it, yeah I think that would have worked better with what they were trying to do. There's still the contrast to Brittana so a chance for Quinn's redemption, but this villanizing would at least make more sense. She really would be a hypocrite and not just... a victim. But no, instead they wrote the story of a clear victim. I don't give a fuck if she happens to be rude to Finn and lie to him, yeah that's messed up but the dude is also actively cheating on her, so. Lest we feel too bad for him. It just sucks so much that RM was so, so unaware of the Quinn he was writing. Makes season 1 in particular incredibly frustrating to me, I can't believe there are people out there who consider this to be her best season. Why do you hate her so much?

So does Trilby have a Supernaturally Menace in it or just... jews
I gave up at 100 pages in and then read the plot summary on Wikipedia, so I can't be completely sure, but there's no sign of a supernatural menace that I came across. The antagonist, Svengali, has hypnotic powers, but there's not much suggestion that he's anything other than a normal man who happens to be very good at hypnosis.
Yes, this is where we get the term "Svengali" from. And "in the altogether". And the reason we call a trilby a trilby is because Trilby wore one in the stage adaptation. This awful book was distressingly influential.
Going to drop the rest of this under a cut for discussion of anti-Semitism and other racism.
I've been trying to figure out why Trilby bothered me so much more than... well, more than pretty much every other Victorian novel stuffed with Victorian prejudices that I've ever read. I don't often give up on books.
I think the absence of the supernatural is part of it. In Dracula and the Beetle, you have an evil foreign menace who's out to do unspeakable things to our good British women, and I'm in no way defending that storyline, but in both cases the monster is legitimately monstrous. Vampires that eat people and giant beetles with mind control powers are genuinely scary. It would be possible to tell these stories without the racism and xenophobia; though the roots go deep, racism isn't inherent to what makes the story function.
Whereas in Trilby, the entire story is that Svengali is evil and does evil things because he is Jewish. There is no version of Svengali where you can subtract his Jewishness and still end up with a coherent character - or not one who would then play the role that Svengali plays in Trilby. As you put it, anon, the menace is Jews. And that's profoundly unpleasant to read in a way that's different from the monsters in Dracula and the Beetle, at least as I experience it.
There is another aspect of the novel that I find repugnant, and have been struggling to figure out how to put into words, so please forgive me if I mess it up.
So, we have a cultural idea that hatred and prejudice come from dehumanisation. It's the Terry Pratchett quote: "sin... is when you treat people like things." And the antidote is generally held to be humanising people. When Shylock asks "If you prick us, do we not bleed?" it's generally understood to be an appeal to a common humanity: if you realise that I'm a human being like you, you will put aside your prejudice.
What I find particularly disturbing about Trilby is how much it humanises Svengali. I know this doesn't seem like it should be a bad thing, which is why I've been struggling to figure out how to put this. I've drafted and deleted two or three posts about it.
He is humanised in such a way that when I read how Svengali is first introduced in the novel, I thought perhaps the criticisms that it's anti-Semitic might be overblown. Which is why I was relatively lighthearted in my first few posts about it.
Yes, Svengali is described as having stereotypically Jewish looks, but he's also an exceptionally talented musician, and in the opening scene, he and the protagonists have a lively party together. They share drinks, they share stories. He's not a Fagin-esque character, who is a cardboard cut-out labelled "evil Jew". Du Maurier fills in Svengali's character more than just about anyone else's; certainly more than the bland group of artists mooning over Trilby. He has depth, he has passions, he has humanity. He is a rounded and plausible person. He has, if you want, a soul.
And then du Maurier makes it clear that Svengali is evil, and the reader should hate him, because he is Jewish.
It feels profoundly hateful in a way that I still can't quite articulate. Most prejudice encourages us to see people as non-people. They don't have feelings, they are lesser, they don't count. By contrast, Trilby encourages us to see Svengali as a full person first and then to hate him anyway. The anti-Semitism in Trilby is the hatred of a neighbour. Du Maurier wants us to look deep into Svengali's eyes, and hate him all the same.
I don't think I've ever read a novel that wants this kind of hatred from me before, and I hope never to again.

The old man and the sea.
Man this book is so weird, or at least the experience that I had reading it.
This whole time I've been trying to get trough this book, everything about it is so bad and so good, this might be the best and worst book I have ever read.
I don't know if this is just me but the worse thing has to be all the boat words it uses, I had to stop reading this book every other two pages to get out my phone and look up what I just read, the first word this happened with was "skiff" what the hell is a skiff, it turns out it's a type of boat, how the hell am I supposed to know that already, how the hell is anyone supposed to know that before going into reading this book.
And maybe it is just me, english is not my first language and maybe |I missed something when I wasn't speaking it, but it really seems like some of these words should have at least an explanation on the back, like gunwale, or the stern, and even weirder is that this book has dates in the back, from when it was borrowed in the past before I took it from my school when they were throwing some old books away, and the oldest it has is from the 80's.
Back in the day, as if I lived in those times, if somebody didn't know a thing they just kinda had to live with it, I still got to experience a little bit of that when I was a kid, and I know how bad it gets from older people I've known who just don't know, or just don't care, that there are so many things that have changed and are not true anymore, and I can only wonder how confused kids back in those days must have been when they saw those words and they asked somebody and they didn't know.
But the book itself was fine, it was incredible, the way that it starts is particularly interesting to me, an old man who hasn't caught anything in over eighty days, his golden years behind him, and the only person willing to still cheer for him and be by his side when he goes fishing is a boy, a boy named Manolin, a name which I just know he gets bullied for, in those eighty days Manolin has insisted in being alongside with the old man and help him catch fish even tough it hasn't happened in so long.
And the meat and bones takes place when the boy isn't with him, when the boys family is so fed up with the old man not being able to catch a thing that even the old man himself wants the boy to go into the big boats with the other fishermen to catch something finally.
Santiago is his name, a name I think is fit for such an old man as him, it has the normality of any other name but I think it is such a good name for a fisherman, he is so obsessed with baseball, and the great DiMaggio, with his bone spur, the old man wants to be like him so much, trying to give himself strength by thinking "what would he dop" when the fish he so desperately wants to catch has been dragging him for so long out at sea.
And that's another thing that I really hated about this book, a way ion which the old man gave himself courage to battle tiredness while lost at sea with his brother the fish, I don't know if this is the case in other printings of this book but in mine it's on page 69, in order to remember the kind of man he is the old man remembers himself of a time when he had to endure an arduous battle and came victorious, at a tavern in a place called Casablanca, he stayed in an arm wrestling competition against a black man for a day and a night.
Oh but the book doesn't use the word black, or technically it does, black but in spanish, I'm not gonna write it, but I know what it is.
And I know that those were other times, and that maybe he didn't mean it or something, but it is such a small part in the story it barely has two pages in the book, and it's just so sudden and out of pocket for the story that I just can't ignore it and be like "oh people back in the day sure were something else", Ernest Hemmingway was at least a little racist.
But like I said yeah the book was pretty good.
The descriptions of the fish are what i like the most, how it turned from a yellow, violet and blue majestic creature, to a gray and lifeless thing after the old man killed it, and it feels so bad to read every page and imagine the fish looking worse with every bite the sharks give it, and the Old man just ignoring the fish at the end, after all that he has gone through, his bleeding hands, his lack of sleep, the tools that he lost while flighting the sharks, and his hurting back, it is a sad book at the end, the boy crying put a knot in my throat, when Santiago finally comes back in the middle of the night and the next morning he sees him lying in his bed face down and arms wide spread looking almost dead.
I finished reading this book almost 36 Years after the oldest date the book had written on it, Feb 12 1988, and today as I write this it's February 11 2024, it seems almost wrong to not save it for tomorrow, but today was the final day of the Superbowl, and it just feels right, if Santiago was a real man living today he would have seen it, and he would have told the boy about it, and compared it to baseball and the great DiMaggio.
He would have seen it and then he would have gone to sleep and dream about lions.
