think what kind of feedback you'd personally like to receive on a piece of art you made. try to translate that want into comments you leave for other people too

you dont have to be critical or constructive or anything, even if the author asks for that stuff in their notes. they'll get it from someone else, you just do you

i feel like people make leaving comments too hard on themselves, so really just make it simple. if you really dont come up with anything, just say thank you. youre there reading for some reason, tell the author what it is. fic comments dont need to be book analysis essays (tho those are. incredibly appreciated as well if you want to write one!!), writers publishing their works for free online appreciate any kind of feedback regardless if you consider it good or well written. a comment is a comment

bottom line is, leave comments on fics and other written works. its whats keeping this game alive

Fic readers, never feel awkward about commenting! Comment, interact, I beg you!

Whether the fic has multiple comments or none, comment.

Whether the fandom is brand new or decades old, comment. People rewatch old favorites all the time and are constantly discovering new things as they are released or long after the source material ended.

Old fics deserve love as much as shiny new ones, and the more interaction there is for old fics can bring newcomers the confidence to post new fics for that thing you like. And getting some love on old fics can reignite the love for those characters/ships and help that author to revisit an old fave and post more for them. So comment!

The possibilities that commenting can bring are truly so limitless. Even if you can’t think up something more than, “I loved this!” we promise that is enough. It’s appreciated more than you know.

SotWK 3 Fic Recommendations: Multi-Chapter, Canon x OC Picks

Dwalin Has a Bad Day (Dwalin x OC) by @lathalea - I know there are Dwalin lovers out there--this fluffy rom-com is a MUST read for you! Apart from the (always) amazing writing, colorful worldbuilding, loveable OCs, and innovative headcanon concepts ("dwelf"!) abound. When it comes to Dwarves, Latha is one of my go-to experts.

A Shooting Star (Thorin x OC) by @linasofia - This is one of the few fics I had the privilege of following all the way through as it was being written, and that says a lot since that means it utterly captivated my pitiful attention span. Lina writes Thorin sooooo well, in the gorgeous manner Richard Armitage portrayed him, and that is what I love in my Thorin fics. Very lovely OC that you would absolutely cheer for, and you are treated to life in Erebor after its reclamation! (Dude, Thorin is alive, where have you been??)

Burn Like Cold Iron (Boromir x OC) by @scyllas-revenge - I almost feel silly putting this on a rec list because this fic is legend in the Boromir fandom. (Like, hi, hello, have you heard of this movie called "Star Wars"? It's kind of walking up to someone and asking them that.) I love fics that draw me in despite not falling into my usual preferences (Modern Girl OC in this case), and this defines that. Scylla also nails a fluffy, genuinely funny brand of humor that I have yet to see matched by any other writer, so if you like that sort of thing, browse her entire masterlist while you're at it. This fic has its own fandom, so if you don't want to take my word for it, take the word of all those other admirers!

My personal take on the Article™️ is that it stumbled badly enough on (real or imagined) bias that the team managed to fuck themselves with it. Even before I was aware of the discourse around the article I get weird and frankly petty vibes, mostly from the way the information was presented / argued for. Why name-drop the CEO of rusty quill despite only briefly mentioning him? Why use TMA-themed pseudonyms in what was supposed to be a serious reflection of RQ? Why include entirely unnecessary speculation on the guest writers for TMA2/TMP? I don't believe that the authors involvement with f&f is necessarily a red flag, but I would describe the lack of transparency in their employment as confusing. Its not possible for readers to verify claims made by the anonymous sources, and while I believe the team would not purposely misconstrue the information they received, I also believe that their own actions within the piece has undercut whatever message they were trying to make. I believe that this article has managed to harm the reputation of everyone informed and the degree to which people got caught up arguing over the integrity/reliability of the article has distracted from the allegations made *and* functionally required those associated with RQ to make statements based on implications the writer created, regardless of their own personal desire.

The ai discourse in fanfic writing only exists because people view fics as products for consumption and not works of art.

The same curse that plagues visual artists, youtubers, musicians, etc etc is starting to creep into fandom circles, because people don't appreciate the art form that is writing as much as they gobble almost mindlessly work after work without absorbing. It's almost like the high of binging a series and being left numb after is done, realizing you didn't savoured the story as much as just simply rushed to the end.

Fic writers will never work as fast as some stupid ai does. It's a labor of love that will, for the great majority, earn us no money or notoriety. The minimum any writer wants is connection and respect.

Posting this not to say don't support the strike, but more to remind people on Tumblr that saying "strikes are supposed to be disruptive" doesn't just mean fans are going to have to deal with not getting more of their favorite tv show or it being delayed, it also means that the rest of us who work in this industry are out of work right now and have no idea when it will return.

I think this sums my feelings up perfectly: "They should get the money they deserve for their work, but it's not going to affect us [below-the-line crew]. In the end they are going to get their deal. But we are going to be in probably about $20,000 to $30,000 debt," Bunch said. "I would love to feel a little bit like, you know, we care about you, and we know that you guys have gone through hell."

It's not that I don't support the writers 100% and want them to have full support (I do!), it's more that there has been a particular attitude on Tumblr surrounding the strike that forgets to consider below the line crew in the equation at all and has been increasingly getting on my nerves.

But I won't pass on the opportunity to share some love. So I decided to choose three stories that, in my opinion, deserve way more attention than they got until now. It's three series, and I love them so, so much!

@peyton-warren is a master in hitting me with all the feels. Her take on Sy is unique in all the best ways and I am so excited where this story will lead us.

Hostile Territory is another Sy story that means a lot to me. @poledancingdinos characters are always fleshed out so perfectly, making you root for them, like I do for Leah and Sy

Hey, I'm still a Mikey girl. And this one is one of the best takes on him ever. @raccoon-eyed-rebel is my Mikey queen anyway, but this story had me entertained in ways I wouldn't have expected. I had so much fun with it.
