After her near death experience when attempting to flee, Moonflower Cookie found herself in a void where the ground was embedded in little stars. Each little star was a fragment of a forgotten memory, by the convincing of a serpentine creature, Moonflower Cookie traps herself in a time loop she believes to be real.

This is a list of the notable characters within this AU, these are the Cookies you can ask questions as well.

Moonflower Cookie: We follow the story of this AU through her eyes. She’s the daughter of Pure Vanilla Cookie and White Lily Cookie and was baked before the Dark Flour War, yet her constant illness along side stress and anxiety in her childhood would form the present distant and colder self. Yet, could this forefront of her be entirely caused by her childhood experiences or could there be other factors at play?

Sweet Dream Cookie: She’s the spouse of Golden Cheese Cookie and has been for a very long time. She holds many mysteries and unanswered questions about her origins and her long life span that seems to match Golden Cheeses (she might even be older than Golden Cheese). She is still unconditionally loving and caring towards GC and her Kingdom (taking great care to study the kingdom, history and current events).

Snow Leopard Cookie: She is the apprentice to Crunchy Chip Cookie himself, after finding the little Cookie in the snow he took it upon himself to raise and train her like his own. The apprentice is nothing but dedicated towards the Dark Cacao Kingdom, but also finds great joy in cramming herself into tight spaces like crates or empty cabinets when off duty.

Sea Bunny Cookie: Though a later addition to the story, they function as a buddy towards Moonflower Cookie. Taking it upon herself to aid Moony in the health department (mental health specifically), keeping a close eye on her and to ensure her safety when possible. Sea Bunny Cookie is an upbeat and cheerful fella with a bombastic amount of energy and compassion for whatever they may set their gaze upon.

Cloudy Pyrite Cookie: She’s the youngest daughter of Golden Cheese and Sweet Dream, she is very hard to keep up with and is quite impulsive with a dash of brattiness. She is always scurrying about trying to always do something to the dismay of Sweet Dream who can have trouble finding her sometimes if she’s trying to multitask.

Overseer / the Thousand Eyes: The serpentine of the abyss, it is a creature that looms around Moonflower, it’s presence unknown to everyone else in Moonys life. It is a creature of many contradictions yet no clear story on its anything, it’s intentions still unknown.

"Everyone has described to me what kind of joy and warmth one feels when your child is in your arms... Why cannot I feel warm? Its just, cold...She's no stranger, she's supposed to be my child."

You're in Denial: Arthur X Celestine

Lady Celestine is one of the four heroes of Yore and just happens to be the love of Arthur's life. She's a very integral character... kickstarting serval events in the story. I hinted at their dynamic in the past: it's the classic enemies-to-lovers troupe (my favorite- blame Bridgerton: They're Kate & Anthony )

Their relationship is an integral part of the story: hopefully, I can get you all on board this ship (it's okay if you don't, it's part of the prelude). She kicks off several plot points in the story. She's the oracle & blacksmith of the GSA and is responsible for creating Triple Star, Exabliur, and Galaxia (unfinished - completed by another). But her main job was to look after the Fountain of Dreams that was in the temple of the ancients.

Which is where this lovely scene takes place. (And they're lotus flowers, not lilies...)

This happens before Meta and Gala, so this is a young Arthur (the before times).

Sir Uther had three apprentices...

The pecking order was: Arthur, Morgan, and Nonsurat. Which created a wall between Arthur and the other two. It also didn't help that Arthur wasn't the nicest guy either.

Before, Arthur was known as Sir Uther's "golden boy"... Cold and calculating, ready and willing to do Uther's bidding without question. An unfeeling war machine by Uther's design. He was Sir Uther's top soldier: a position Morgan envied & despised Arthur for it...

He was at the top, but it was a lonely spot. As a result, Arthur had closed his heart off from the world: never being his own person. Causing him to wear an apathetic and arrogant personality. He was his master's tool, nothing more. This was his lot in life, and he had accepted all of it.

On Celestine's end, she was a caged bird all her life...

Celestine can't predict the exact future... only show potential paths. But with her powers can guide people to the outcome they want. Which is why she's given the title of Navigator of the Constellations. Nightmare knew of her ability and desperately wanted her power. Only appearing with if alongside the other heroes of Yore when needed (which was only Uther & Icarus at the time).

However, there was a sinister reason behind it... the ancients wanted to monopolize her power. And was confined to the temple most of her life as a result.

Because of her powers, she knew what the ancients really were; a bunch of self-serving hypocrites. So she played the "naive, sweet little priestess": but hid the heart of a dragon. She had a few followers that served under her court; her position kept them within arms reach. In reality, she was alone...

She's the Merlin of the story and Celestine... did not take kindly to Arthur. When she found out that Arthur would be the one to end Uther's reign... "there has to be another Arthur because this one's an arrogant little prick!" She met him a few times: shadowing Uther, and saw him as his dirty henchman.

Arthur did not have a high opinion either of Celestine due to Uther's influence. As the chief blacksmith, Celestine would hire based on talent. She did not care if a person was a high-born or low-born... which Uther did not like. Uther saw her as a foolish little girl who did not know how the world worked. As a result, Arthur saw her as a sheltered, naive, delusional dreamer... however, this would all change.

After the temple was attacked by Nightmare: he was assigned as Celestine's bodyguard. Arthur was not ready for the bucket of sass that was Celestine. Sharp, witty, and vicious (with a few other surprises), she was not one to be messed with.

Arthur was at her mercy since she was technically above him. Though much to his surprise: she insisted on being treated as his equal. Unlike his master: who demanded respect... she was nothing like him. Celestine infuriated & fascinated him all at the same time.

For Celestine, she took this as a chance to reform him... which translated to: "For the sake of the galaxy, I need to take this man down a peg!" But... was pleasantly surprised that her original notions of him were wrong (half of them he was still a little prick ). And teased him every chance she got to reprogram him from his "unfeelingness,"... much to Arthur's annoyance and her delight. But she came to care for the man more than the prophecy.

In time they both realized they suffered the same loneliness. And found comfort in each company... and valued their time together. Arthur, he did not need to be"Sir Uther's golden boy": just Arthur... the feeling was mutual on Celestine's end. She never needed to pretend with Arthur and felt safe being herself with him.

They loved each other but didn't know the words. Both were too inexperienced and young to realize this. And if they did say it... their positions wouldn't allow it... What became of Lady Celestine?

Hmm... oh, I wonder what happened to her?

Morgan herself was also supposed to be one of the heroes of Yore and complete the set (of four)... But it just didn't fit well. I wanted her to have more emotional weight. Making her one of Uther's apprentices and a rivalry with Arthur seemed more fitting.

There was more of a personal connection to them. Giving her more reason to want to take over the GSA. Always desiring Uther's praise and recognition but never receiving it.

If Morgan won the poll, it (the comic) would've been about her and Norsurant. While they may have been the spares; Norsurant & Morgan always had each other (in a sibling sense).

But after Arthur fell from grace by taking in MK: Morgan became obsessed with taking his (Arthur's) spot. And ended up leaving Norsurant behind to pursue the empty spot. However, this incident also changed his relationship with Arthur.

Like Morgan: Nonsurat believed that Arthur was the golden child that could do no wrong. But after this incident: made realize that he had Arthur figured out all wrong.

“I know right, Jacob and Austin apparently had issues during filming which led to Jacob walking off set at some point. which led to the films delay. So I pick you up?” -Lilly

As shy you are you, at least it’s at dark theatre and you can dress comfy

“Ohh wow. hmmm Sure… yes!”

You throw on your favorite shirt with the art work of the nightmare before Christmas on it paired with cute jeans & a tote bag, grab the book ur reading Wuthering Heights and ur off.

When you both arrive to your surprise a smaller yet beautiful theatre, with everyone dress up to the 9s “great” I said looking down at my shirt.

“haha don’t worry. There wasn’t a dress code! the lights will down soon” lily

Lilly gets to chatting with some of her journalists friends.

As i walk around the room full of people in suits, girls dressed up in the most prettiest clothes I’ve seen. Looking around for Austin no sigh of him, so i go to get coffee since snacks aren’t allowed. there was a fancy cafe stand right out the threatre, as ur waiting for ur black coffee a tall man comes close beside you.

“hi ya, can i have a black coffee with extra espresso shot on ice” he says.

Without looking at him i say “oh wow ur gonna be up all night” with a sweet smile.

expecting him to only giggle, he says “I’ve been up all night already I need all the help.”

He laughs softly… “lovely shirt by the way”

You turn and look up at him “oh -thank ..oh your Jacob!”

“Haha hi yes I’m Jacob, nice to meet you. What’s ur name dear?” -jacob In a deep Aussie accent that’s been faded out but still there.

“Oh I’m Sarah, nice to meet you “ I shyly say and look down at his fancy shirt. His eyes heavy on me but from that point I couldn’t look at him, then I say “your dressed so lovely”

I just hear a soft laugh “thank you, I can’t take credit. I was sent this to wear and give back” -Jacob said.

“Oh still that’s better than what I have on” I say ..feeling so shy in front of him.

“Are you kidding me? I have nightmare before Christmas shirts, that’s one of my favorite films. it’s a comfort to me..” - Jacob says looking down at me his eyes so sweet.

“Oh wow *feeling his eyes on u* that’s my favorite ever, I love it so much. I have the toys and everything” thinking I should be more calm and cool like he is.

Both our coffees come at this time we both say thank you at the time. we hear a person saying 5 minutes till the film starts to take our seats.

“Oh omg I have to go” I said as if he didn’t have to go as well.

“Hehe, ya dear likewise, I see ya later in there ?” He says softly.

“Yes, see u later nice meeting you” I say thinking he’s just being nice and of course I won’t see him again.

He takes my right hand into his palm, his hands so big compare to mines yet he was so gentle..

“nice meeting you little Sarah”

As I make way to sit beside lily “where have you gone off to?”

Still thinking about him calling me “little Sarah”

“Oh huh hmm, I met Jacob elordi! Getting coffee, He was really sweet..”

“Shit! Sarah!” Lily loud enough for people to turn to us jacob as well. he was with Austin and others. He looked at us and smiled.

“Sorry” lily says quietly.

“I’ll tell you more later” I said with red cheeks. looking I can see the back of Jacob’s head, I could’ve sworn he turned around to meet eyes right before everything went black. the film starts.

As the credits roll, The lights turn on, as chairs are being brought for the cast and director to sit,

“Omg is a q&a happening you didn’t tell me this!”

I hadn’t expected to feel so shy from Jacob. the whole film I spent looking to the back of his head like an idiot, and when I did pay attention it was boring. Jacob was like a star shining in it though.

“I didn’t think it was important enough because these things are usually 15-30 minutes” lily says as her mouth opens “Sarah . I think. Jacob elordi is looking at you”

My heart dropped. I turn to look up at Jacob sitting there staring at me with his brown eyes shaped so perfectly.

I gave a small wave with a soft “Hi”

He does the same, the journalists around us. Some start to whisper “does she know him?” “Who is she?”

I finished The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House this weekend, and I feel like I’m still laid out flat by what I watched. I’ve been so consumed with QLs lately, that jumping into a wholly different world of filmmaking was a touch of a shock. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, and I have to wholeheartedly RECOMMEND IT as a must-watch for 2023. LONG post!

First off: Koreeda Hirokazu. A MASTER director and screenwriter. His taking on the canon manga, Kiyo in Kyoto, had fans in anticipation for The Makanai to premiere on Netflix. My two favorite films of his are After Life (1998) and Like Father, Like Son (2013). He doesn’t shy away particularly from difficult stories about families and complicated relationships, and tends to cast familiar faces, especially Lily Franky. His latest film, Broker, has been on the awards circuit this season.

A couple of quick definitions and explanations before I move forward. This is a show about what us in the West called “geisha” culture in Kyoto. A maiko is an apprentice geisha, and geiko is the word for geisha in Kyoto’s dialect. A makanai means a person who cooks staff meals, say, at a restaurant or another kind of business where staffers get fed. 

Kiyo in Kyoto is about the teenage protagonist, Kiyo, becoming the makanai of a maiko lodging residence in Kyoto, after she follows her best friend, Sumire (later known as Momohana), to Kyoto to apprentice as maiko. Sumire has a natural talent for this work, while Kiyo is a carefree, unburdened soul who isn’t committed to much in her young life. Kiyo is expelled from her maiko apprenticeship, but asks to become the makanai of the lodging house, and is able to stay in Kyoto, and close to Sumire, as Kiyo had promised to remain by Sumire’s side during their journey into apprenticeships. Both Kiyo and Sumire are from the same town in Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost prefecture on Honshu island, just south of Hokkaido. In Aomori, Kiyo lived with her grandmother, a local doting soul, and her grandmother’s kitchen is where Kiyo first found her passion for food and cooking. Finally, Sumire is in love with their mutual friend, Kenta, who is a high school baseball star in Aomori. It’s not clarified directly, but it’s apparent that Sumire’s love is unrequited, and indeed, it’s indirectly indicated that Kenta might be more inclined towards Kiyo. Kenta is shown sitting with Kiyo’s grandmother for many meals, including holiday meals, without explanation as to his own family.

So that’s already A LOT to manage, and still, Koreeda takes on more -- he takes on the unbelievable setting that is Kyoto and the Gion district, as well as flashbacks to winter-strewn Aomori; he takes on rivalries, regrets, sisterhood, and more among the women of geiko and maiko culture; he takes on the breathtaking theme of unrequited and resistant love, and he takes on the theme of complicated -- very complicated -- friendship, leveraging Kiyo as an unburdened foil and mirror to reflect on the complicated natures of the people around her.

First off, if you are at all inclined to be taken away simply by cinematography, you MUST WATCH THIS SHOW. I haven’t watched anything more beautiful in a VERY long time. This brings up for me the wonderful conversation that took place last month regarding the sense of space in QLs; in regards to the sense of space and how ma (that very intricate concept of place, time, and space) is incorporated into doramas -- I haven’t seen a show that does it better than The Makanai at the moment. 

The way Koreeda captured seasons. The way he incorporated fashion -- what geikos and maikos wear during performances, on their off-time, during celebrations -- my GOD. The way he used COLOR. The way he used quiet, and sound, to lift up conversations outside in spectacular settings. The way he held shots. SUMPTUOUS. I was totally taken away.

Two shots that moved me: Kiyo in a sento bathhouse, humming to herself. (She’s later teased, without her knowing, by some of the maiko, for being like an old man, scrubbing and humming in the sento.) 

Kiyo, Kenta, and Sumire, a flashback to Aomori, Kiyo and Kenta shoveling snow while Sumire built a snowman. And an immediate cut to Sumire watching Kiyo shovel snow in Kyoto. The quietness and the beauty gave me physical chills. 

Kiyo as a free soul, moved by her passion for cooking and not much else, is leveraged so beautifully as a means of a young woman being in a place at a particular time, without carrying the emotional burden of existence that many of us place on our shoulders. She’s not the person who asks why something is happening in her life. She’s the one who’s feeding the people who are doing that asking unto themselves, and suffering either because of that inquiry, or suffering simply because of an inability to transcend what they’re going through. Kiyo is clearly a Zen-like foil -- even though she’s treated often as someone “with a screw loose,” as the geiko Momoko says to Sumire in the last episode. But I think Kiyo is far more in touch with the world than anyone else that surrounds her in the show. She’s the human embodiment of ma.

So, speaking of cooking: the reason why I picked up this show is because friends of mine recommended it to me as a cooking dorama, and certainly, a lot of news coverage in the West focuses much on the food of the show. Many of the Western articles, I think, miss many points about the show, and I think it’s in part for a lack of understanding about how food and cooking are so emotionally interwoven in unspoken aspects of Asian cultures. (A lot of commentary I’m reading just focuses on the dishes -- and the dishes are incredibly important, especially in how Kiyo interprets them from her Aomori taste, adjusting seasonings and techniques for the group of maiko she’s serving who hail from across Japan. But the dishes are not the only, or the most important, aspects to this show.)

Kiyo is often asked if she’s okay with being the makanai. She kept her promise to her friend, Sumire, Sumi-chan, to stay by Sumire’s side. Sumire would ideally like to keep Kiyo by her side -- if Kenta likes Kiyo, it’s better to keep Kiyo in Kyoto. But also: Sumire is primed to be the next best maiko and geiko in Gion, as Momoko predicts (Momoko is the star geiko of Gion), and Sumire will need an ally. Kiyo is Sumire’s ally -- and we’re not sure if Sumire has Kiyo’s best interests at hand.

But Kiyo insists that she’s okay, that she wants to be the makanai. Even at 16, she says, this may be the job I was intended to have. Kiyo radiates simplicity in a fantastic, uplifting way. I think Western critics are missing this. Western food media tends to absolutely glorify, many times in horrific and ignorant ways, dishes without the cultural context of the cooking, preparation, or history of those dishes. In other words, Western media erases the stories behind the cooking.

The Makanai is ALL ABOUT THE STORIES BEHIND THE COOKING. Kiyo is a makanai, and to Kiyo, that’s just fine. She doesn’t find it demeaning because she is not demeaned. She even seems surprised when she’s asked by a lodge okkasan if she’s okay with this job. 

Food brings comfort, memories. It satisfies hunger, needs. Comfort, memories, hunger, needs -- these are HUGE, huge. Kiyo does that? That’s massive emotional work. She knows exactly what she’s doing.

So, what all does this show have? Absolutely EXQUISITE cinematography, and an unwinding, mature story focused on the journeys of two teenagers, with ambition, rivalry, regret, love (requited, unrequited, unresolved), and beyond unbelievable acting. 

It’s an absolute CRIME that I can’t take screenshots (eff you, Netflix), but here’s two. Hashimoto Ai, as Momoko, is on the right of the first shot. Imagine her kimono as brilliant sky blue. The fashion choices and colors in this show were mindblowing. Hashimoto Ai, by the way -- I STAN. What a CONCRETE performance.

The reason why I chose the second shot, of Sumire in her daily lessons, is because the light from the windows reminds me of when I first started to learn how to meditate years and years ago. The Makanai is one of the most meditative shows that I’ve seen in years, and I CANNOT recommend it highly enough. Utterly breathtaking.

okay probably the last bit of Kyana meta for today. putting together a little Character And Romance Development Timeline for her so that I can keep track of it, and also because I changed her character arc a little since the last time I played, so I need to fix The Continuity a little

anyway, the timeline

pre-Origins: Irving's favorite student, a star pupil who gets Special Treatment but is only aware of some of it. Jowan is her only friend, and, while she cares for him, she doesn't pay that much attention to him either. both the blood magic and his relationship with Lily come as a complete surprise. interprets the decision to make Jowan Tranquil immediately after her own successful Harrowing as a deliberate move against her and decides to help him escape out of spite, reasoning that it won't matter that much because, after all, Jowan is harmless

early Grey Warden era: feels betrayed by Jowan, Irving and Duncan. the world has conspired to take her nice cozy Circle life away from her, and she needs to blame someone. she decides to blame blood magic. stubborn and refuses to admit her ignorance in certain topics. processes her feelings through Magical Violence. permanently injures her leg climbing the Tower of Ishal because she refuses to stop and heal up. kills the hermit in the Brecilian Forest in cold blood because someone told her he was a blood mage.

enters Kinloch Hold with Alistair and Zevran (recruited literally earlier that day), only to have her entire worldview shattered. climbs through the bloody mockery that was made of the place she called home. forced to come face to face with people she knew who turned to blood magic, and realize that for every truly evilTM blood mage there are three desperate people who would never do it if they had literally any other choice. accidentally gifts Zevran the Dalish gloves, not knowing their significance.

trapped in the Fade by the Sloth demon, forced to kill and consume minor spirits in order to sustain herself. learns Fade shapeshifting, which begins to slowly eat away at her sense of self. after the final battle against Sloth struggles to revert to her human form and has to be brought back by Wynne's, Alistair's and Zevran's combined efforts

rescues Irving and is shocked to receive a very formal and distant reaction from her ex-mentor, who barely acknowledges the literal hell she had to crawl through and addresses Wynne instead. decides that irving is dead to her

after un-possessing Connor, has a conversation with Irving where he reveals some facts about her past: like Connor, she was possessed as a child, though in her case it was at an even earlier age, and by a Fear demon rather than Desire. her family was wealthy enough to afford a similar ritual to the one performed on Connor, but it was decided that, for her own safety, it will be best to move her to a Circle further away from Kirkwall, where the Veil is notoriously thin. initially Irving's interest in her was brought on by necessity - he wanted to monitor her for any remaining signs of possession - but eventually he grew genuinely attached to her. he saw in her traits that could, with the right set of beliefs, make a good Grand Enchanter, and decided that he would raise her for this purpose. he discouraged her from forming social connections with other apprentices because he felt like it could interfere with his end goal. he apologizes to her for the role he ended up playing in her fate, and promises that he will not make the same mistakes with Connor

shortly after the backstory reveal collapses in Redcliffe Castle, remaining unconscious for several days as the effects of consuming spirit essence finally catch up to her. in her fever dreams she is forced to confront the memories of her possession, repressed until now. she realizes that a part of the Fear demon remained within her all those years, which is how she was able to devour spirits (and even Sloth itself) while she was trapped in the Fade. she manages to bend the fragment of the demon to her will and fully absorb it. she wakes up with strange arcane scars around her eyes (her purple markings), an even greater affinity for Magical Violence and a slightly shakier sense of reality than she had before

during the search for the Urn of Sacred Ashes grows closer with several companions; develops an unlikely friendship with Zevran, whose stories about Antiva and his previous assignments take her mind off everything else that happened to her recently. he seems to be completely non-judgemental of her violent streak, and some of his experiences mirror hers in a strange way, which makes those conversations all the more interesting

in Haven, she's challenged first by Sten (in combat) and then by the Guardian (who questions her); in both cases she stands her ground, defeating Sten and refusing to answer the Guardian. unbeknownst to her, Zevran draws the conclusion that what happened to Sten can easily happen to him, and attempts to flirt with her as a way to protect himself. while previously she wold never consider a relationship, things have been Really Weird, and Kyana decides that she might as well give it a try. unfortunately, Zevran interprets that as a sign that his assumption was correct and that he is being used, which comes as a disappointment to him, since they've been getting along really well (and still are, in a way)

at this point, Kyana has decided that the Circle chapter of her life is over, and the best thing she can do is not dwell on it; the Circle was doomed from the moment Uldred and Loghain made their deal, Jowan is gone, Lily is gone, there's nothing left to it. the person Kyana thought she was is also gone, and she might as well embrace the things that have changed about her. her relationships with her companions are progressing, and, while flirting with Zevran is... strange, she realizes she does, in fact, enjoy it

however, she's forced to confront her past one more time as the party runs into Jowan while traveling. faced with him, Kyana has no choice but to answer the question she refused to answer back at the Gauntlet, and decide how she feels about her former best friend. she admits that both she and the Circle have mistreated Jowan, and tells him that she's sorry about Lily. she says that, had she known what being in love is like, maybe she would have tried to escape from the Circle too. it's at that point that Zevran, who is present for this conversation, realizes that his manipulation of the Warden was more successful than he thought and Kyana is actually in love with him, and becomes terrified (she trusts him) (that makes completing his mission possible again) (he doesn't want it to be possible) (he doesn't want her to die). however, he's in too deep to stop now

My beloved Nina, also known as the very gifted PinaNaponi, and here as @vulnerasanenturmyprince. I cannot tell you how much this lady means to me. She's on a hiatus from fandom right now, but I couldn't not dedicate some love to my sweet friend.

Nina and I met during one of the worst periods of my life. And she had no idea just how much joy she brought into my life then, because I kept so much of what I was dealing with hush hush. Our first time interacting was a literal cry for help on my end where Nina told me "if you're okay talking to a literal stranger, my DMs are open." Which just goes to show how openhearted and generous she is. She gave me so much support that day.

When I was struggling, and feeling alone, and afraid, Nina reminded me that decent people exist. She's walked through rough situations with such grace and class. All before we were properly friends. And she is, somehow, all the more wonderful when she's in your corner.

This lady is intelligent, skilled, creative, and passionate, and kind. I adore her to bits. And even when she slipped out of fandom, we've kept in touch. And I know without a doubt that whatever our distance on this earth, and in fandom, whatever life throws in our way, I've got this lady for good. And she simply must be celebrated!
